• Texas leads the United States in the number of beef cattle, while Wisconsin is the leader in dairy cattle. The country with the most cattle is India, where the cow is considered sacred.

• The average dairy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. That’s an annual output of about 1,600 gallons per cow. • Although we in North America drink mostly cow’s milk, worldwide, more people drink goat’s milk than cow’s. • Do you speak “chicken?” These feathered creatures have been the inspiration for all kinds of idioms in our language, such as “chickenhearted” and “chicken-livered” to denote cowardliness. We “walk on eggshells” when we proceed cautiously. Our “nest egg” is money saved for the future. An “egghead” is overly intellectual, and a person is seen as a “good egg” or a “bad egg.” If you’ve done something that made you look foolish, you have “egg on your face.” We’ve all “run around like a chicken with its head cut off,” “counted our chickens before they’re hatched,” and been advised not to “put all our eggs in one basket.” Many offices have a “pecking order,” and some men claim to have been “hen-pecked” by a “biddy.” • There are more chickens in the world than any other bird. That little red growth that hangs beneath a chicken’s beak is called a wattle. It’s red because it has a rich supply of blood. • A female chicken less than a year old is known as a pullet, while a very young male is a cockerel. When a cockerel is 8 to 12 weeks old and weighs 2 or 3 pounds, he is referred to as a broiler.

If you’re eating your Christmas goose, most likely it’s of the Embden variety. • The delicacy pate de foie gras is made from the livers of geese. In Europe, geese are forced to eat more food than normal to produce a large, fatty liver. But don’t try it in America … This method of feeding is illegal in the States.
What is the definition of a goose? An animal that grows down as it grows up!
• According to folklore, when sheep run back and forth, jump up and down, and fight as they frolic, it means a change of weather is on the way. Legend further maintains that if oxen are licking their forefeet, hens are taking dust baths, or frogs are croaking more than usual, rain is forthcoming. A chicken standing on one leg denotes impending cold weather. • Roquefort cheese is made from the milk of the French Larzac, or Roquefort, sheep. The fat content in sheep’s milk is much higher than that of cow’s milk. • What’s for dinner? If you’re having moussaka, you’re eating a dish of lamb and eggplant. Kibbe on the menu denotes ground lamb.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
● It was Maurice Sendak, the writer and illustrator of such beloved children’s books as “Where the Wild Things Are,” who made the following sage observation: “Childhood is a tricky business. Usually, something goes wrong.”
• Although most folks eat turkey in November, the month of June has been dubbed National Turkey Lovers’ Month. September is National Chicken Month, May is National Egg Month, and October is National Pork Month. For those non-meat lovers, October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month, and November is Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month. • Although we think of turkeys as gobblers, only the male toms actually gobble. The female hens make a clicking noise. A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers. • A horse’s teeth take up more space in its head than its brain. While a male horse will have 40 teeth, the female’s mouth contains only 36. • We generally mount a horse on its left side. This practice has been around since the days of ancient Greeks, when the soldiers carried their weapons on their left side, making it difficult to mount on the horse’s right side. • How fast are farm animals? The maximum speed a pig can run is about 11 miles per hour, while a chicken struts along at 9 miles per hour. A wild turkey can reach a ground speed of 25 miles per hour as well as fly for short distances up to 55 mph. Compare these with the world’s fastest animal, the cheetah, whose speed is about 70 mph.
● You have to wonder what citizens were thinking when they adopted town names like Cranky Corner, Rabbit Hash and Idiotville. Yes, those are, indeed, real town names; you can find them in Louisiana, Kentucky and Oregon, respectively. ● Morbid tidbit of the week: Human bodies suitable for research are valuable commodities; some hospitals and schools will pay $220,000 for a single cadaver. ● You’ve heard of dogs performing heroic acts -- they’ve even been mentioned in this column from time to time. But what about cats? As it turns out, there are feline heroes, too. Take Winnie, for instance: In March of this year, the Indiana cat alerted her family, the Keeslings, when poisonous carbon monoxide entered their house due to a broken water pump. ● Think your kids are spoiled? Consider this: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s new baby, Shiloh, was reported given a diamond-encrusted pacifier valued at $17,000. *** (c) 2007 King Features Synd., Inc.

● In China, you can pick up a pack of cigarettes for as little as 8 cents. ● It probably comes as no surprise to you that singer Mariah Carey worked as a waitress before she became famous -- after all, working in a restaurant is practically a rite of passage for those who want to break into the entertainment industry. She also worked as a coat-check girl, though -- and she was fired for having a bad attitude.

ROB’S RHYMES
Fall’s conveniently misplaced, frost seems to have forgot Average weather, the September that is Goldilocks hot Coats weeping in hibernation, how long will they stay At least the beans know their seasons, down to the day Summer storms two months too late, a record we’ll keep Spring floods turned inside-out, rivers forgetting to sleep Bugs frolic without hesitation, with each day’s reprieve Goose bumps will have to wait, even with a short sleeve Winter waits and watches, taking note of our festive joy Could this all be a trick, is Mother Nature just being coy Almanacs and woolly caterpillars all checking their notes The biggest problem is politicians in shorts seeking votes

Suddenly Raising Grandchildren When grandchildren suddenly come to live at your house and become your responsibility, there’s usually no advanced notice. A sudden turn of events -- a tragedy, substance abuse, a set of military orders to a hostile area -- followed by a knock on the door, and you’re back to raising children. This time it’s your grandchildren you find yourself responsible for. There are sure to be complications: Maybe you’re in an adults-only community. Maybe you’re barely making ends meet. Maybe you’d always planned to retire and travel the world -- alone. Maybe your health isn’t that great lately. Maybe you still work a fulltime job. If you find yourself in this situation, you’re not alone; more than 2 million grandparents are raising grandchildren. Fortunately, there are resources. Here are two: Go to aarp.org and look at the GrandCare Toolkit. There’s more to suddenly being responsible for raising grandchildren than one might imagine, until you’re thrust into the situation. The Toolkit has links to a wealth of information: where to find help, legal issues (you might need legal guardianship before you can even register your grandchild in school or authorize medical procedures), finances and public benefits, health insurance, tax considerations, childproofing a house and even a beginner’s guide to computing with grandchildren. See www.raisingyourgrandchildren.com for links to local and state resources, advice for dealing with stress, information on financial assistance you might qualify for and ways to help children who may be coming out of abuse or neglect situations. While these sites won’t do the hard part -- the actual raising of your grandchildren -- it might help to know you’re not alone and that there is help out there.

• Although John Denver was born in New Mexico, he didn’t stay there for long. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. into a military family, his father’s Air Force flight instructor position took them from place to place. As a youngster in Arizona, he sang in the Tucson Boys Choir for two years, and at age 11, was given a guitar that had belonged to his grandmother. • Denver enrolled in college at the Texas Technological College in the school of architecture, but it didn’t take him long to realize that his future was in music. At age 20, he made the move to Los Angeles, and at 22, joined The Mitchell Trio and started his recording career. After three albums with the trio, he branched out on his own at age 26. His friends urged a name change, suggesting John Sommerville, but John loved Colorado so much, he opted to use its capital city for his stage surname. • John Denver’s first album was “Rhymes and Reasons,” a 1969 production that featured one of his most famous compositions, “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which had been recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary two years earlier. After Denver’s own recording of the song was released, the other version rose to No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
A flying saucer results when a nudist spills his coffee.
• “Annie’s Song” was written for his wife Annie Martell, whom he had met while performing at Minnesota’s Gustavus Adolphus College and married in 1967. He composed the song in ten minutes while riding a ski lift. • Over the years, Denver recorded about 300 songs, with 200 of these being his own compositions. The state of Colorado named him their Poet Laureate in 1977, and he was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1996.

• Denver branched out into acting and was praised for his role opposite George Burns in the 1977 comedy “Oh, God.” He also guest-starred frequently on “The Muppet Show,” which was the start of a long friendship with Muppets creator Jim Henson. During the 1970s and 1980s, he was the host of the Grammy Awards five times, and also was a frequent guest host on “The Tonight Show.”

• “Jet Plane” was closely followed by “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a Billboard No. 2 hit. In 1974 and 1975, Denver was a major player on the charts with four No. 1 hits, “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” and “I’m Sorry.”

Indecision is the key to flexibility. You cannot tell which way the train went by looking at the track. There is absolutely no substitute for a genuine lack of preparation.
• Denver was a long-time advocate of the environment, campaigned consistently for its conservation, and reflected his love of nature in many of his songs. •
Denver’s love of flying eventually led to his death. As a pilot with over 2,700 hours of experience, he had mastered several ratings, both land and sea, single- and multi-engine, and Lear jet proficiency. Yet, in October of 1997, while piloting his recently-purchased Long-EZ plane, he crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Pacific Grove, California. Following cremation (along with his grandmother’s 1910 Gibson guitar), his ashes were scattered in his beloved Rocky Mountains.

Long and Short Term Rental
I Can't Read That By Ronda Addy
The teacher has just informed you that your child is having a bit of trouble writing. The first thing you want to know is what you can do to help. Here are some tips. Until they have developed good motor skills, children aren't able to write very well. Every child's motor skills develop differently, but the more your child uses their fingers in activities, the sooner their motor skills will develop. Activities to help a child develop their motor skills include: • Have them play with clay to strengthen their fingers and hand muscles. • Encourage them to play with action figures, small blocks, miniature cars and any other small toys they can find. • Put puzzles together with them. • Encourage them to do art projects using scissors, crayons and paper tearing. • Play games with them that involve using cards or small game pieces. • Have them stack coins according to denomination. • Help them learn to tie and lace their shoes and button their clothes. Handwriting problems occur in five main areas: letter formation, sizing, spaces between words, letter slant and line alignment. To help with letter formation, there are a number of activities. Try having your child write a letter in shaving cream or sand. Use arrows beside the letter to show them how to form the letter correctly. Take a picture and have your child write a letter by all the things that begin with that letter. Make a word search with lots of words using that letter. Pick a topic and have your child make up a list of words using the letter that are associated with that topic. Play Tic Tac Toe using different letters. To help with letter sizing, experiment with making giant and tiny letters. Take something your child has written and circle letters that are too big or too little. Have them copy a sentence using big letters one time and tiny letters the next. To help with letter spacing, have your child write some sentences on graph paper and leave two or three squares between the words. Have them write down a word, then place the index finger of their non-writing hand after the word and write the next word to the right of the finger. To help with letter slant, draw a diagonal line on a chalkboard and have your child write a word on the board as many times as necessary to get the slant right. Practice with imagery, such as going up the mountain and down the mountain. To help with letter alignment, have your child do dot-todot or maze exercises. Draw a line on paper to represent grass. When writing a word, make sure your child touches every letter to the grass. It may not seem like it, but having legible handwriting is an absolute must. Not everything can be done on a computer and printed out. When having your child practice, make it fun. Let them use a special pencil. Don't have them just copy some words. Use word puzzles, anagrams or have them write a list of words around a certain theme. A child needs to develop the physical requirements for writing, such as holding a pencil the right way, control, dexterity, coordination and posture, so the more practice, the better.

THUNDER & LIGHTNING Over a 30-year period, lightning has caused more deaths than tornadoes or hurricanes and is the second-leading cause of storm-related deaths, second only to floods. This week, Tidbits takes a closer look at stormy weather. • The early Greeks thought that lightning was a weapon of Zeus, the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. Because of this, any spot that had been struck by lightning was considered sacred, and temples were frequently constructed on these sites. Minerva, the Roman goddess of health, learning and wisdom, is said to have thrown the thunderbolts of her father, Jupiter. Scandinavian mythology credits Thor, the Thunderer, as the one in charge of tossing lightning bolts at his enemies. • What causes lightning anyway? It’s a discharge of electrical energy in the atmosphere. It starts within a cloud, with winds causing a collision between precipitation particles. As a result, small ice crystals lose electrons, and larger particles gain electrons. These larger pieces cause a negative charge to build up in the lower part of the cloud, while a positive charge builds up on the ground below. When the cloud’s negative charge connects with the ground’s positive charge, the current follows the path, creating a flash of lightning. The bolt’s path can be five times hotter than the surface of the sun! • The clap of thunder is the product of a shock wave created by rapid heating and cooling of air in the lightning channel. If you can hear thunder, the storm is close enough for a lightning strike, even if the thunderstorm has passed. Lightning can strike ten miles from the center of the storm. • In 2009, lightning killed 34 people in the United States. About 90 percent of lightning victims survive a strike, although they may suffer serious neurological damage as a result. Lightning is also the cause of about $5 billion worth of property loss every year in the United States. The National Weather Service estimates that there are about 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning flashes every year in the United States. • We’ve all heard “lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice.” Not so! It frequently strikes in the same place repeatedly, particularly if that place contains a tall, isolated object. The Empire State Building is struck about 25 times every year. • Areas more likely to incur lightning strikes are tall trees, towers, light poles, flagpoles and open fields. In fact, most victims are in an open area or near a tree. Lying flat on the ground actually increases your chances of being struck by a ground current. Under a tree is the secondleading location for lightning casualties. It’s also important to stay away from any pond, lake or other body of water. • It’s a myth that you can be electrocuted by touching a person who has been struck by lightning. They are not electrified, and it’s absolutely safe to administer first aid. Most fatalities are caused by cardiac arrest, not as the result of burns. • Although the inside of a house is relatively safe during a storm, stay away from anything that conducts electricity, such as corded telephones, appliances, wires, computers, TV cables and metal doors. Likewise, don’t take a bath or shower or use other plumbing during the storm.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
● On Oct. 11, 1793, the death toll from a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia reaches 100. By the time it ended, 5,000 people were dead. Today 20,000 people still die every year from the disease. ● On Oct. 12, 1810, Bavarian Crown Prince Louis marries, with the citizens of Munich invited to attend the festivities. The decision to repeat the festivities in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the annual Oktoberfest. ● On Oct. 14, 1911, Mary Pickford’s contract with Independent Moving Pictures is voided when a court rules that she cannot be held to a contract she signed as a minor. Before Pickford, studios refused to identify their actors by name, correctly fearing that name recognition would drive up actors’ salaries. ● On Oct. 8, 1944, “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” airs its first episode on radio. The show, which moved to TV in the early ‘50s, focused on the comic situations of the real-life family of show founders and stars Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and sons Ricky and David. Ricky became a successful rock musician and died in a plane crash in 1985. ● On Oct. 10, 1951, President Harry Truman signs the Mutual Security Act, announcing to the world that the U.S. was prepared to provide military aid to “free peoples,” with an increase in military assistance to democratic nations. President Dwight Eisenhower abolished the Mutual Security Act in 1953. ● On Oct. 9, 1969, the National Guard is called in as demonstrations continue in Chicago protesting the trial of the “Chicago Eight.” The trial involved charges against Abbie Hoffman and others, and stemmed from the violent antiwar demonstrations in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. ● On Oct. 13, 1974, television talk-show legend Ed Sullivan dies. Sullivan gained national fame as host of “Toast of the Town,” later named simply “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which ran for more than two decades. (c) 2007 King Features Synd., Inc.

Once you decide to sell your home, you’ll need to prepare it for viewing. You may think your home is in top condition, but there are ways to make potential buyers drool over your property. And since you want top dollar, a little sprucing up could go a long way. The best way to determine what your home might need is to consult the experts. Call several real estate agents and ask them to view your home and give you some advice. They look at homes all day long and can tell you exactly where your house excels and where there’s room for improvement. You don’t need to sign a contract in order to get their advice either. Most will advise you freely in hopes that you’ll remember them when you are ready to put your property on the market. The first thing potential buyers see is the outside of your home: the exterior paint, siding, roof, windows, entryway and driveway. By inspecting your home, you may notice areas in need of repair. Walk around the outside of your home and examine it objectively as if you were a buyer—be critical. Is the paint chipping? Do the bricks need tuckpointing? How does the roof look? Are any shingles missing? Are there any broken or cracked windows on the house? What condition are the entryway and driveway in? You may use your back door everyday, but buyers will be looking at the front door. If your storm door is damaged, replace it. The driveway takes up a good portion of the front view of most homes. If it’s in good repair, most buyers won’t notice it, but a cracked and crumbling driveway will stick out like a sore thumb and turn buyers off. A crumbling driveway is an indication of a home that has not been well maintained and could prompt low offers. In order to make a good first impression, fix or replace it. A good rule of thumb to remember for the exterior is: fix what is broken and clean what is not. Home buyers list dirt as the biggest turnoff.

You’ll want to show your home to potential buyers in the best light. The easiest and least expensive way to improve any home is to clean it and paint it inside and out. Inside, nothing spruces up a home quicker than a coat of paint and clean carpets. When painting, use neutral colors, such as white or cream, and don’t overlook ceilings. Although ceilings don’t get scuffed up, they do collect dirt which makes the room look darker. And don’t paint natural wood trim. Just clean it with a good wood cleaner to give it a high-gloss finish. Pay particular attention when painting the kitchen and bathrooms; buyers look very closely at these two areas. Use a high-gloss paint that’s easy to clean. Outside, give the front door two coats of paint. Potential buyers will be seeing it up close. All of these ideas will make your home more marketable, but don’t go overboard and think you have to remodel your home. Experts say you won’t get a dollar for dollar return on your investment. Spending money on hidden areas, such as new wiring or a new furnace, won’t impress buyers. Fix potential hidden area problems, but don’t replace them. Plan wisely and put your dollars where they’ll work the hardest. Small interior renovations can make a big difference. Replace outdated lighting fixtures with modern ones. Install updated plumbing fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen. If the kitchen really needs work, a small investment of say $10,000 will bring a better return than a totally new $50,000 renovation. Replace worn or stained carpets, especially in the major living areas. Pick a neutral color that shows well. It may also show dirt easily, but your main concern is that it will bring a luxurious and elegant feeling that potential buyers will notice. Make sure your improvements stay within the norm for your neighborhood. If you live in a neighborhood where $100/sq. ft. carpeting is in every home, don’t install $35/sq. ft. carpeting.

Once the cosmetics are completed, tackle the clutter. Pack up everything you don’t absolutely need. One half of everything in each closet should be removed to make the closets look bigger. Furniture that is non-essential can be put into storage to make rooms look larger. Clean out the garage, basement and attic, and store off-season items at another location. You want your home to appear large and airy, neat and orderly. Remember, potential buyers will be looking in drawers, cabinets and closets, so put your best foot forward by being prepared. Again, let the experts guide you when making improvements. Since you’ll only get one chance to make a good first impression, take the time and effort to dress up your home before putting it up for sale.
