BOWLING (continued): • Gobble, gobble! Three strikes in a row in the game of bowling are called a turkey. Don’t confuse a turkey with a triplicate, which is the term for three identical scores in a three-game series. • If three strikes in a row are a turkey, three consecutive open frames (those without a strike or spare) constitute a “buzzard.” Four consecutive strikes are called a four-bagger, five are called a five-bagger, and six in a row are referred to as a six-pack. • It takes 12 strikes in a row to score that perfect 300 game, which includes three in the tenth frame. • Most folks think of Brooklyn as a borough of New York City, but to a bowler, a Brooklyn occurs when a right-handed bowler’s ball strikes the left side of the head pin or when a left-hander’s ball strikes the right side of the head pin. • The “pocket” for a right-handed bowler is that space between the 1 and 3 pins. The lefthander’s pocket is between the 1 and 2. • Bowlers say they’ve been robbed when a “tap” occurs. That’s when a pin stubbornly remains standing following a seemingly perfect hit. • If you keep your eyes on the pins during your entire approach and delivery and aim directly at those pins, you are a “pin bowler.” A “spot bowler” picks a spot on the lane over which his ball must pass, and aims the ball at the spot and not at the pins. • Every bowler’s nightmare, the split, is also called a “railroad.” Bowlers call a narrow split, such as the 2-7 or the 3-10, a “baby split” or a “Murphy.” A wide split, such as the 7-10, is called “bedposts” or “mule ears.” Bowling borrows a term from football to denote a missed split. When the ball rolls between a split without touching a pin, it’s known as a field goal. • In bowling jargon, a “barmaid” isn’t the lady serving drinks, but rather one pin hidden behind another pin. Other terms for the same thing are “double wood,” “one in the dark” and “sleeper.” When a bowler talks about the “maples” or the “wooden bottles,” he’s referring to the pins.

BOWLING (continued): • Have you seen grandma’s teeth at the bowling alley? That’s when a random array of pins remains standing after the first ball of the frame. And if a bowler leaves a “mother-in-law,” the 7 pin wasn’t toppled. • Professional bowlers use the word “logs” to refer to heavy pins used for practice. They can be up to four pounds each. • Reed Townley of Gadsden, Alabama, bowled an unusual three-game series in January of 1989. Townley’s first game had an “in-the-cellar” score of 89. He dipped even lower his second game to 87. For his third game, he changed either his style or his attitude because he bowled a perfect 300 game. • It was rather a profitable vacation for 25-yearold Brett Wolfe. In January of 2002, Wolfe became only the sixth amateur in 52 years to win the American Bowling Congress Masters. He took a few days off from work to compete, snatching the $500,000 prize from hundreds of more seasoned, professional bowlers. • Jeremy Sonnenfeld was a 20-year-old college sophomore when he became the first person in history to roll a perfect 900 series — three “300” games. “Mr. 900,” as he came to be called, accomplished this feat in February of 1997. Although a fellow named Norm Duke had bowled three consecutive 300 games the previous year, they weren’t in the same series, and Sonnenfeld’s 900 score went on the books.

Each of the two competing teams has four 4.5-inch (11.4cm) diameter balls and shares one 1.75-inch (4.45cm) diameter target ball known as the “Jack” or “Pallino.” The target ball is thrown out onto the field, and then the teams alternately toss or roll their Bocce balls, hoping to land closest to the Jack, while displacing their opponent’s ball. The ball closest to the target scores a point, and the first team to reach 12 points wins.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
• It was French poet, journalist and novelist Anatole France who made the following sage observation: “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.” • Those who study such things claim that baby girls smile more than baby boys. • While in space, astronauts can’t use traditional salt and pepper. If they tried to sprinkle the condiment on food, it would just float away, possibly clogging air vents and otherwise wreaking havoc. So some bright person came up with liquid forms of the seasonings. • The English word for the fruit “squash” comes from the language of the Native American Narragansett tribe. It means “something eaten green.” • If you ever decide to participate in a public protest in Greece, remember not to wear sunglasses. Since shades can hide your face, wearing them is illegal during demonstrations there. • The Oldsmobile motor company also made early gasoline-powered lawnmowers. • Wilhelm Rontgen discovered X-rays in 1895, and his work earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics. His work also set off a fad among many women, who refused to undress even behind closed doors. They feared that X-rays could be used to see through walls to spy on intimate moments. • The famed Pony Express didn’t actually use ponies -- just horses. *** Thought for the Day: “Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps, for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are and what they ought to be.” -- William Hazlitt (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
• Don Carter, a bowling great of the 1950s and 1960s, has earned the title “Mr. Bowling.” This six-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) “Bowler of the Year” was the first professional bowler to reach a six-figure annual income. In his younger years, he played on a professional baseball minor league farm team but asked to be released from his contract after a year because he felt he wasn’t major league material. As a teen, he had played legion baseball with Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola. • Bowling legend Earl Anthony was the 1970s “Bowler of the Decade” and “Master of the Millennium” and was the first bowler to break the $1 million mark in earnings. He racked up 41 career PBA titles and 42 second-place finishes and was in the top five finishers 144 times, as well as being named the PBA’s “Player of the Year” six times. • Dick Weber has the distinction of being the first bowler to win a PBA title in five different decades, including two out of the first three PBA tournaments ever held.

Vote November 2nd, not sure why to vote or who to vote for? Hmm... Does it really matter? Everything that politicians say or do is opposite their promises. I guess that is why more people need to vote all the time to keep the politicians on their toes!

ROB’S RHYMES
Brown clouds of dust hang ominously the over bare fields Serious smiles gather what a summer of hard work yields Generations practicing this seasonal ritual, countless times With changes, many would flee the way of life that rhymes Comforts now fill farmers combines with whistles and bells Cars scurry by, their occupants irritated by the rural smells The connection to the land now astray, living ordinary lives Detours reuniting both, and slicing with sharpened knives Devastation or irritation is all that remains of ill timed rains Hunger is again soothed, nature is never without its pains Both oblivious to the world that the other’s reality now sees Even as both are chained to a way of life that progress frees Copyright ® 2009 Robert A. New Books for Winter Many of us spend more time indoors during the winter, and reading fills a lot of the hours. If you’re like me, you tend to stay with the same authors you’ve come to enjoy over the years, and we wait for them to come out with a new book. Meanwhile, we randomly dip into other books, never quite finding what our favorite authors provide. Here’s a hint: Use dark winter days to explore new authors. My goal for the winter is to read novels by writers in my home state. It’s easier than you think to find books you’ll likely enjoy. Ask your reference librarian for a peek at a book called “What Do I Read Next?” This big volume lists authors and books alongside those that are similar in some way, offering hints about others you might enjoy. The reference librarian herself might be a fount of knowledge when it comes to knowing what’s good. You can do this over the phone, if you can’t get out that day. Some libraries have a book bus that will come by and deliver your books. Take a chance on a brand-new author, too. You never know what treasures you might find hidden in the pages. Or, if your library doesn’t have “What Do I Read Next?” perhaps it has an online subscription to NoveList Plus, which is essentially the same type of database and currently contains information on more than 200,000 titles. If you have Internet access, you can do an informal search yourself at www. whatshouldireadnext.com, www.whichbook.net or www.lazylibrary.com (no book listed is more than 200 pages). Maybe with a stack of new authors to explore, this winter won’t seem so long and cold! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

GONE HUNTING... Two bowling friends decide to go hunting for the weekend, whilst out in the woods one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his mobile phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

Born just 23 days apart in 1941, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel began as friends in elementary school. Join Tidbits as we take a closer look at this duo’s long history. • Simon and Garfunkel first appeared together in their school play “Alice in Wonderland” in 1953, in which Simon starred as the White Rabbit and Garfunkel as the Cheshire Cat. They attended middle school together and went on to Forest Hills High School, where in their junior year, they started performing together. • The pair called themselves Tom and Jerry, with Garfunkel using the name Tom Graph, and Simon dubbing himself Jerry Landis. They launched their song writing career in 1955, and in 1957, made their first professional recording, “Hey, Schoolgirl,” which landed them a performance on “American Bandstand” as high school seniors. The duo split up for the first of their many times shortly afterward, and Simon composed a few minor hits using the stage name Tico, writing and singing with Tico & the Triumphs. • Paul Simon received a B.A. in English from Queens College and entered law school, only to drop out to chase his music career. Art Garfunkel received a B.A. in Art, History and a Masters of Science in Mathematics from Columbia, recording several singles as “Artie Garr” while in school. The two met up again in 1962, reuniting as Simon & Garfunkel. “The Sound of Silence” (the lyrics of which took Simon six months to pen) was a megahit for them and was a statement about humans’ lack of communication with each other. It was followed closely by “Homeward Bound” and “I Am a Rock.” • When their music was featured in the 1967 film “The Graduate,” the album quickly rose to No. 1, earning them Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Pop Performance for “Mrs. Robinson.” • Artistic differences and tension in their deteriorating relationship tarnished their 1969 tour and led to a delay in the release of their final album “Bridge over Troubled Water” in 1970. The colossal title track was No. 1 on the charts for six weeks, and the album was at the top for ten weeks. Rolling Stone ranked the song No. 47 on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” It was the Grammy choice for Record of the Year and Song of the Year as well. Their breakup came shortly afterward.

Central Park’s success triggered a world tour in 1982-1983. It wasn’t until 1990 that they sang together again, this time for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 1993, they SALES • SERVICE RENTALS • LEASE paired up again for 21 sold-out concerts. • Simon & Garfunkel were awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and performed “The Sound of Silence” as the opening act of the program. • On Nov. 1, 1512, the ceiling of Rome’s Sistine Chapel, one of Italian artist Michelangelo’s finest works, is exhibited to the public for the first time. In 1926, he had turned down the Pulitzer Prize awarded him for “Arrowsmith.” • On Nov. 2, 1947, the Hughes Flying Boat -- the largest aircraft ever built -is piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its first and only flight. Built with laminated birch and spruce, the massive wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football field and was designed to carry more than 700 men into battle. • On Nov. 7, 1957, The Gaither Report called for by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to review the nation’s defense readiness and urges a vigorous $30 billion campaign to build fallout shelters to protect American citizens. It suggested that American citizens were completely unprotected from nuclear attack. • On Nov. 3, 1964, residents of the District of Columbia cast ballots in a presidential election for the first time. X MARKS THE SPOT! Can you think of ten words that start with the letter “X?” This week, expand your vocabulary as Tidbits x-amines several words you’ve probably never heard of! • Her name was Xanthippe, and she was the wife of Greek philosopher Socrates and bore him three sons. You have to wonder what her temperament was like, since the word xanthippe is now a term for a scolding shrew. Unusual synonyms are termagant and virago, all meaning a nagging woman. • Xanthin and xanthein are very close in spelling and have related meanings. Xanthin is the yellow nonwater-soluble coloring matter present in flowers, while xanthein, the same yellow coloring, is water-soluble. The “xan” root is present in many words related to the color yellow. That beautiful yellow color of autumn leaves comes from the presence of xanthophyll, (For 12 Months, Offer requires Agreement) a pigment found in the leaves. Some butterflies have yellow wings due to the pigment $500ÊBONUS! BONUS! xanthopterin. If your girlfriend has blond hair and a pale complexion, she is scientifically known as a xanthochroid. And if you’re afraid of X's X "Short for my X's second mistake" going to a foreign doctor, you may suffer from XXX "The reason I have an X in the first place" xeniatrophobia. • Xyst is an unusual word that refers to the entryway of an ancient Greek gymnasium where the athletes exercised during the winter months. • Everyone is afraid of something, but those individuals with the rather odd fear of unfamiliar accommodations are called xenodochiophobics. Similarly, the word xenial is a term that refers to anything having to do with hospitality. • Xylo- is a prefix that means wood. The most familiar related word would be xylophone, that musical instrument with two rows of wooden bars that are struck with small wooden hammers. The crystalline sugar you’ll find in woody plants is called xylose, and a person skilled in the art of engraving on wood is a xylographist. A creature that feeds on wood is known as xylophagous, and a vendor who sells wood products is a xylopolist. • If you adhere to a diet of bread and water, you are following the principles of xerophagy. Windows Are The #1 Source Of Heat Loss By Doris A. Black
Windows are one of the most important structural characteristics of a home. They bring in light and beauty but can also be a major source of heat loss in the winter if not maintained properly. To reduce heat loss, inspect and replace any damaged existing windows or use other insulating devices. The most common reason windows leak is because they are old, cracked or missing caulking or weatherstripping. Caulking is made of silicone or latex, an airtight compound used for filling holes and cracks in the 365winCambridge dow frame and joints between the frame and the wall. With age, caulking deteriorates and should be replaced when it crumbles and cracks. To remove old caulking, use a putty knife to pry it clear of the frame, taking care not to damage wooden frames. Clean and dry the surface areas before reapplying caulk. Manufacturers recommend applying caulk when temperatures exceed 50 degrees. Colder temperatures will prevent the caulk from adhering and sealing properly. Weatherstripping is used to form a tight seal between a moving and stationary part of the window, such as the sash and the frame. Narrow weatherstripping can be purchased in vinyl, foam or rubber.

Leaky windows waste energy and ultimately dollars for the homeowner. The holes or cracks in your framing or caulking can be so miniscule that they aren’t visible to the naked eye. But there is one surefire way to locate the air leaks around your windows. After removing draperies and other flammable objects from the window area, light a candle and slowly work your way around each window frame, holding the candle about three inches from the frame. Watch the flame flicker as it passes through air currents. This method is especially effective on a windy day when strong currents of air are forced through the tiny cracks and holes. Once the leaks are located, reducing or eliminating them can greatly improve the energy efficiency of your windows.
319-270-4770
Knowing the style of windows you have may also help you determine where cracks are most likely to be found. Double-hung windows, where the upper sash and lower sash are moveable, are the least energy-efficient style because there are so many surface areas where a tight seal is difficult to achieve. Horizontal sliding windows are similar by design and therefore just as prone to being drafty. Louvered and casement windows are moderately airtight because of their compression seals. They open with a hand crank, are easy to operate and provide good ventilation. Compression seals are twice as air tight as the sliding seals of double-hung or horizontal sliding windows, a fact to keep in mind when purchasing new windows. When installing new windows seems to be the best option, knowing the construction characteristics of different types of windows can help you choose which ones to purchase. Manufacturers rate the energy efficiency of windows by R-values. The R-value represents the window’s ability to resist heat flow. Window R-values can range from a low .09 (very drafty) to over 3.0 (very airtight). The higher the R-value, the less heat loss will occur. For example, single-pane windows have an R-value of 1.0 (not good). Several factors determine a window’s energy efficiency: • Glazing material. Although most windows are designed with clear glass, many homeowners opt for windows with special glazes to enhance the energy efficiency of their homes. For example, heat-absorbing glass uses solar energy to increase energy efficiency by 45% and windows with low-e (low emissivity) glass coatings reflect 40% to 70% of the heat that is normally transmitted through clear glass, keeping the heat inside where it belongs. • Number of layers of glass. Double- or triple-pane windows have layers of space between each pane to resist heat flow. The more layers, the better insulation. • Amount of space between panes of glass. Too much or too little space between panes can allow too much heat transfer. The highest-rated windows have air space between 1/2" and 5/8". If the space is filled with argon or krypton gas, as in high-efficiency models, the insulating value increases further. • Frame construction and installation. Window frames can be constructed of one type of material or a combination of materials. The most common are: wood, vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass. Wood frames have the highest R-value, but also require the most maintenance (painting, staining, etc.). They are likely to rot and swell if not maintained properly. Vinyl frames are virtually maintenance free and have moderate R-value, but are not as strong as wood, although they can be reinforced with steel bars. On the low end of the price scale are aluminum frames. They have the lowest R-value and are prone to condensation, but are strong and ideal for custom sizing. Fiberglass frames have excellent R-values, can be expensive to purchase, but will not rot, warp or corrode. When choosing multiple-paned windows, consider the spacing material used to separate the panes. Metal is most often used but it is not very efficient. Look for a brand that uses foam separators, nylon spacers or other insulating materials between the glass inside their windows to give the highest consistent thermal resistance.
Uses Include: • • • •
Painting Changing Lights Interior Restoration Wall or Ceiling Repair
When window replacement is not an option, consider purchasing the precut plastic sheeting sold in kits at hardware and home improvement stores. This thin, yet effective plastic is inexpensive and easy to install, reducing heat loss and providing additional energy savings. Another option to replacing windows is to install insulated drapes, shades or blinds. Installed on the interior to reduce heat loss in the winter, these window treatments are available in a variety of styles and are a smaller financial investment than total window replacement. Awnings, shades and shutters are valuable investments to keep scorching summer heat outside where it belongs. Make your home more comfortable and affordable this winter by locating drafty windows, repairing broken seals or installing new windows with a high R-value rating. Then sit back and watch the utility bills drop.

How did the dollar sign come to represent U.S. currency? Until 1794, the Spanish dollar a. was the main coin in circulation in Americ Properly known as the peso de 8 reales, it was “p” commonly abbreviated as a lower case and “s”, with the “s” written to the right and d above the “p.” Often the two letters crosse one another, and eventually, they melded into one symbol. It is a small bone of contention among international computer geeks that the standard key boards feature the dollar sign cy. and not the symbol of their native curren of They feel that it’s just another example American domination on popular culture.

The cent sign evolved after the dollar sign, and was simply designed as the letter “c” (for cent) with a vertical line through it to match the dollar sign. Today’s computer users may notice the lack of a cent sign on their keyold boards. (Some of us will remember our typewriters that featured the ¢ above the numeral six on the keyboard.) Multiple research studies show that people remember ads printed in a newspaper 50% more than those who saw an ad on-line. Print advertising has also been shown to increase the response to your other advertising methods by up to 60%. That means your coupons, mailers, radio spots and flyers will become more effective in combination with your Tidbit ad. So if print advertising works so well, why do you always hear that it doesn’t? You probably have wondered if your print ad works; how many times do people really say “I saw your ad in Tidbits!”? The fact is that many people do not know WHERE they saw your ad, they might not even remember they saw your ad; but if you specifically ask them, they just might remember. One Tidbits customer believed they were not getting a good return on their investment since very few of their new customers mentioned the ad in Tidbits. When asked, “How’d you hear about us?” the customer replied “I drove by and saw your sign” or “I heard about you guys from a friend of a friend” or “I got it in a coupon/post card/flyer”. The fact was that a majority of these new customers were Tidbits readers! They may have driven by and seen the sign and stopped in, but they’d been driving by the store twice a day, 5 days a week for years and didn’t stop to shop until the ad had run in Tidbits for several weeks. Another fact – that store did not have any coupons, mailers, flyers or postcards – Tidbits was their only print advertising outlet at the time! Don’t just ask your customer, “How’d you hear about us?” but also ask specifically, “did you see our ad in Tidbits?” and show them a copy so they can visually remember your ad.
