BIG BIRDS (continued): • Another big bird, the California condor, is the largest flying bird in North America. In the 1980s, the California Condor Recovery Program started with a small group of 27 captured condors to prevent their extinction. The endangered species now has over 300 birds in the wild. A unique feature of these big birds is that they have nails similar to toenails instead of claws or talons. • California condors are vultures and definitely one of the birds we don’t want to eat! Vulture is a word that most people associate with “yuck!” They eat carrion (dead animal carcasses), so are considered part of “nature’s clean-up crew.” These amazing birds can fly up to 55 miles per hour and can climb to altitudes of 15,000 feet. They have a lifespan of up to 50 years. • Native Americans see the condor as a symbol of power. Calling it the Thunderbird, they believe the beating of a condor’s wings will bring thunder to the skies. • Hungry for an omelet? One ostrich egg equals about two dozen chicken eggs! You’ll sure need friends to share with if you choose an ostrich egg for breakfast, and, because of its high acidity, antacids may be needed as well. • It is a myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand. When threatened, they try to hide by lying flat on the ground or running; they can not fly. They are the fastest birds on land, capable of sprinting at 45 miles per hour. Their powerful, long legs can cover 10-16 feet in a single stride. Their size is also impressive. Ostriches are 7-9 feet tall when fully grown and weigh 220350 pounds. Like turkeys, these birds have tasty meat. Unlike turkeys, however, the meat is red and tastes more like beef. It is very low in cholesterol and fat. Ostriches are natives of Africa.

BIG BIRDS (continued): • The emu is another flightless bird that has healthy red meat. It is 97 percent fat free. Emu oil is said to be the “perfect emollient” and comes from a padding of thick fat on the back of the bird, a natural protection from the extreme heat of its native homeland, Australia. Emus are the national bird of Australia and are farmed in many places for their meat and oil. • A little smaller than ostriches, emus weigh up to 150 pounds and stand 5-6 feet tall. Emu eggs are dark green and weigh an average of 1.5 pounds. • Another big bird from Australia (and also New Guinea) is the cassowary. Its eggs are green-blue and also very large but, because the cassowary is aggressive and dangerous, they have not been domesticated. • Kiwis are not only a tasty fruit but also the national bird of New Zealand. Kiwis are only about the size of chickens but lay large eggs — about ten times the size of chicken eggs. The nostrils on this flightless bird are on the tip of its beak and are used for sniffing out food at night. • In 1906, Kiwi Shoe Polish, sold in small cans with a kiwi symbol on the lid, became a very popular new product. It was marketed by an Australian from Melbourne who had a New Zealand-born wife. All over the world people from New Zealand are referred to affectionately as “kiwis.” • Two species of rheas, which are also flightless birds, are native to South America, and they also have healthy red meat. “Eggers,” crafters who decorate eggs, love rhea eggs. Darwin’s rheas lay pale green eggs, and common rheas lay eggs that are golden in color. 1 Advanced Hair Technologies Massage TherapisT

• It was British playwright Tom Stoppard who made the following observation: “Skill without imagination is craftsmanship and gives us many useful objects such as wickerwork picnic baskets. Imagination without skill gives us modern art.” • You’ve probably had some experience with hail at some point in your life, but probably not with hail like this: The heaviest recorded hailstone in the world fell in Bangladesh in 1986; it weighed a whopping 2.25 pounds. The largest hailstone, which fell earlier this year in South Dakota, measured 8 inches in diameter. Be glad your car -or your head -- wasn’t in the way. • William Henry Harrison, the country’s sixth commander-in-chief, had the shortest tenure of any United States president. He died of pneumonia just 32 days after taking office. • In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed 13,200 homes, 87 parish churches and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and it left some 70,000 people homeless. It also provided the impetus for the beginning of the insurance industry. After the conflagration, Nicholas Barbon, a well-to-do doctor, realized how much of his wealth was flammable. A year after the Great Fire, he began the world’s first insurance company. • The men and women who venture into space have to adapt themselves to changing environments both when they enter space and when they return home. Many astronauts and cosmonauts say that one of the most difficult things to adjust to when returning to earth from space is the fact that when you let go of something, it falls to the ground. • If you’re a longtime football fan, you might not be surprised to learn that between 1983 and 2006, the average weight of NFL players rose by 10 percent. *** Thought for the Day: “Eighty percent of married men cheat in America. The rest cheat in Europe.” -- Jackie Mason (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Not golden, but silver in color, are the state quarters that were minted in the United States from 1999 to 2008. The Idaho quarter released in 2007 has a peregrine falcon on it. The peregrine falcon has the ability to top 200 miles an hour (320 km/hr) when diving for prey while flying. The World Center for Birds of Prey, located in Boise, Idaho, was dedicated in 1984 to help with the conservation and protection of these magnificent big birds. They, like the California condors mentioned earlier, are raptors, and are not for eating. They catch prey with their talons and have excellent vision. • Albatrosses live in the southern seas near Australia and the Antarctic. There are 13 species of these large birds that mate for life and can live to be as old as humans – 80-85 years! When an albatross leaves its nest it might not land again for 7-10 years. The Wandering Albatross is the largest of these big birds, with a wingspan of 11 feet (3.35 m), and it weighs about 18 pounds (8 kg). These birds can cover amazing distances. According to Birds Australia, a national organization working for the conservation and protection of Australia’s native birds and their habitats, one banded bird is on record for traveling 3,728 miles (6000 km) in 12 days! • Whether studying birds or enjoying them as part of a feast, we all should know of their importance in our world. After eating your turkey dinner, consider picking up a book or two on these fascinating creatures.

Stressing the importance of a good vocabulary, the teacher told her young students, "Use a word ten times, and it shall be yours for life." From somewhere in the back of the room, came a small male voice chanting, "Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda."

Once we achieve perfection in life, it would be nice to just say freeze No more troubles, never a change, everything would flow with ease At what point would we choose, when life floats briskly like a breeze But who would find discomfort, if time were to stop, God is our tease God’s children are susceptible to the frailties, humanity inherits at birth Shangri-La exists only in our dreams, never a Heaven, never on Earth Those times when all is lost, are the moments that’ll measure our worth Without loss and despair, life would have no meaning, love without girth

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles
No COLA Increase The news isn’t good. There has been lots of talk about the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for the year 2011. And now we know: We won’t see an increase in our monthly checks. Many of us already live close to the edge. With the cost of everything going up -- food, gas, utilities, clothing, medical (and never mind having any fun by going out to a movie or the occasional dinner) -- we’re going to be squeezed tighter than ever. Many of my friends are getting angry and making plans on how to survive with less. That’s my stance on it, too: Figuring out how to make it work. Here are some of their ideas: • Join a movie club, one that delivers DVDs right to your door in the mail, and split the cost with some friends. Swap the movie around or get together once a week to watch the latest film. • Don’t buy holiday gifts for family this year, or send one check as a family gift. • Pool your resources where possible. Go in with a few friends on bulk groceries and divide them into smaller amounts. Go on errands together in one car, or use the van if you live in a retirement center. • Ask the senior center or even the library to host a meeting to exchange ideas on how to save, signing up with others for car rides and bulk purchases, or bartering and swapping. • Ask your doctor for generics on every prescription you have, and buy them at stores offering $4 prescriptions, if possible. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. The History Channel
• On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most famous speeches in American history at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa. Using just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly articulated the meaning of the conflict for a war-weary public. His address lasted just two minutes. • On Nov. 18, 1883, American and Canadian railroads begin using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. However, it was not until 1918 that Congress officially adopted the railroad time zones and put them under the supervision of the Interstate Commerce Commission. • On Nov. 21, 1927, Time magazine puts the Holland Tunnel on its cover. The tunnel, which runs under the Hudson River between New York City and Jersey City, N.J., had opened to traffic the week before, at the stroke of midnight on Nov. 13. The toll was 50 cents per car in both directions. • On Nov. 16, 1945, the United States ships 88 German scientists to America to assist the nation in its production of rocket technology. Most of these “volunteers” had served under the Nazi regime. The voluntary nature of the scheme was somewhat undercut by the admission that the scientists were in “protective custody.” • On Nov. 20, 1955, Bo Diddley introduced himself and his namesake beat to the world with his television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Sullivan was so furious with Diddley for not opening with Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons” that Sullivan banned him from future appearances on his show. • On Nov. 15, 1965, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, 28-year-old Californian Craig Breedlove sets a new landspeed record -- 600.601 mph. His car, the Spirit of America, cost $250,000 and was powered by a surplus engine from a Navy jet. • On Nov. 17, 1973, in the midst of the Watergate scandal that eventually ended his presidency, President Richard Nixon tells a group of newspaper editors that he is “not a crook.” After a relentless federal investigation, Nixon resigned in August 1974. (At least he was no witch)

A $5 Sears & Roebuck guitar, bought by his father, gave Glen Campbell his musical start. One of 12 children, he grew up in the small town of Billstown, Arkansas, and conquered the instrument by the time he was 10 years old. • Glen Travis Campbell is still performing at age 74. He has proven himself a terrific entertainer through the years, with his musical and acting abilities and his friendly hosting of “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” from 1968-1972. • After he released the single, “Turn Around, Look at Me,” in 1961, the talented singer and guitarist was noticed by Capitol Records. It was also in 1961 that Campbell arrived in Los Angeles and became a studio guitarist with famous artists such as Frank Sinatra and the Beach Boys. He actually toured with the Beach Boys for about 18 months in the mid-60s. • “Gentle on My Mind’ was a great hit for Campbell in 1967, even though initially it only made it to No. 30 on the Billboard chart. When he followed a year later with several other hits, “Gentle on My Mind” made a second climb on the charts. His other hits during this time were “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” “I Wanna Live” and “The Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife.” • A major event that helped propel Campbell’s career was a guest-star appearance on “The Joey Bishop Show” in 1968. Tommy and Dickie Smothers were impressed by his talent and natural ability to entertain and asked him to host “The Summer Brothers Smothers Show,” a summer replacement for their regular show. CBS executives were thrilled with his summer work and signed him for his own variety show. • “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” was a tremendous success. Campbell’s musical talent, along with his quick wit and stage presence, made him a near instant hit. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) simulcast the show from England to Singapore to Australia! He had major global exposure. • While the show was becoming a hit, many of his songs were hitting the charts. In late 1968 “Wichita Lineman” and “Galveston” both garnered Campbell accolades and put him high on the country and pop charts. • In 1969, while recording albums and hosting his television show, he added big screen acting to his list of accomplishments. His debut performance was with John Wayne in “True Grit.” He recorded the hit song for the movie with the same title. • When Campbell’s variety series was canceled in 1972, he was still on a successful upswing with his career. He had two No. 1 singles, “Rhinestone Cowboy” (1975) and “Southern Nights” (1977), which kept his name and music in the public eye (and ear!). • Campbell has had 45-plus years of music/show business success. He has released more than 70 albums, sold 45 million records and has been awarded 12 Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Gold albums, four Platinum albums and one Double-Platinum. He has had 27 Top 10 hits. • Campbell has had some troubles through the years along with his many successes. He struggled with drugs and had several divorces. His hit song, “Rhinestone Cowboy” was also the title for his autobiography released in 1994. In 2005, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He continues to tour and appears often at theaters in Branson, Missouri. His latest album, “Meet Glen Campbell,” was released in 2008.

• Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian. • Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States! www.localshoppingcedarrapids.com Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.
WHY BUY LOCAL?
Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

PIES WE LOVE The term “as American as apple pie” has been around for years and stirs patriotism in all Americans. However, pies, even apple pies, have been around longer than the U.S.A. has been a country. • The first known pie recipe was for a rye-crusted, goat cheese and honey pie and was published by a Roman, Cato the Censor, who lived from 234-149 B.C. Early pies were mostly meat pies (spelled “pyes” in older writings), and the crusts were mainly for holding the filling and were usually not eaten. Pie crusts were called coffins (or “coffyns”) until the American Revolution, when the term pie crust came about. • Many pies are loved and eaten year round, but the pumpkin pie is a favorite for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meals in the United States and Canada. A version of pumpkin pie was first made by colonists who cut off the tops of pumpkins, removed the seeds and filled the shells with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkins were then baked in hot ashes. • The first American cookbook written and published in the United States was “American Cookery” by Amelia Simmons, published in 1796. Her pumpkin (pompkin) puddings were baked in crusts and were similar to the pumpkin pies we enjoy today. • Pecan pies are also favorite holiday treats. They are believed to have originated in New Orleans after Native Americans introduced them to the French in the late 1600s. The word pecan comes from the Indian word “pacane,” which means “nut to be cracked with a rock.” Pecans were first discovered in northern Mexico and Texas, and they are still grown mostly in the South. Southern orchards produce around 250 million pounds annually, mostly sold as shelled nuts. • Our culture is so crazy about pies that we have the American Pie Council (APC) committed to “preserving America’s pie heritage and promoting America’s love affair with the food.” The organization has personal and commercial memberships and has special events that promote pies every year. National Pie Day is on January 23. For the tenth year Celebration, Florida, will host the 2011 Great American Pie Festival from April 8-10. What a delicious place to be! • At pie festivals and in many polls taken, the favorite pie almost always turns out to be apple. According to a survey conducted by Crisco® in 2008, apple pie is No. 1, with pumpkin coming in second. Apple pie has been the most popular pie in England for hundreds of years. The first apple tree (that we know of) planted in the United States was planted in 1629 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Now apples are grown in many states and also in Canada. • Did you know that there are approximately 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States? Of all the places growing apples across the North American continent, Washington state is the place with the most commercial growers. More than half of the apple crop each year comes from Washington. • Many people serve apple pie a la mode, which means with ice cream. There is also an old folk saying: “Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze!” So, how do you like yours? • Whether you prefer pumpkin, apple, pecan, blueberry, strawberry, huckleberry, lemon, chocolate, etc., we at Tidbits® hope you get your fill of pie this holiday season!

How come wrong numbers are never busy? Do people in Australia call the rest of the world "up over"? Does killing time damage eternity? Why is it that night falls but day breaks?
A man left for work one Friday afternoon. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending his entire pay check. When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied, “That would be fine with me.” Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

Winter will soon be here and so will the snow. Are you planning on building a new snow castle or just adding a room? If so, I would suggest you build it in the back yard this year. It appears that our politicians are exploring all options of finding new revenue sources and they may just be ready for your temporary winter retreat. Be especially careful with the extras as you may not have the proper permits for building and easement rights with your neighbors if your not careful!

How would you like to reduce your heating bill up to 15%? As the days grow shorter and the nights get cooler, we begin to turn our thoughts to winterizing our homes. We put up the storm windows, get out the down Cambridge comforters and brace ourselves for365 those enormous heating bills. But with proper furnace maintenance, those bills can be kept in check. When a furnace works properly, heat is distributed efficiently and safely. Faulty furnaces, on the other hand, have to work harder to heat your home, which is where most homeowners lose money. With regular maintenance, you can save 5% to 15% in energy costs. Although most of us think to change our furnace filters occasionally, there is more to properly maintaining a furnace than just that. Several other areas of the furnace also tend to collect soot residue that minimizes furnace efficiency. With a yearly furnace tuneup, home heating experts can identify potential problem areas before they become serious. Here’s what the experts do: • Clean the blower blades. • Set the flow of gas by adjusting the flame size. • Clean soot out of the burner and heat exchanger. • Check bearings for proper seal. • Clean heat pump coils. • Check that the compressor and fans work properly. • Lubricate fan motors and blades, and replace belts if necessary. • Inspect heating ducts for air leaks. • Check for carbon monoxide leakage. • Clear chimney and flue of any hazardous debris. • Check precision of thermostat controls.

If you are prone to sinus infections or asthma, you may benefit from having the ductwork cleaned. A periodic cleaning will prevent dust and other allergens from blowing around the house. Not all heating specialists clean ductwork, so be sure to ask when making an appointment if you desire this service. There is more that you can do to help maintain your heating system. Look inside your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance practices. Generally speaking, professionals say that most of us don’t change our filters often enough. They recommend installing a new filter once every four weeks during the heating season for maximum benefit. You can also keep the area surrounding the furnace free of dust and debris by vacuuming regularly near the burner compartment. Check all air registers throughout the house to make sure they are unobstructed by furniture or rugs and are free of dirt and dust. If you follow all recommendations and still experience unusually high heating bills, it may be time to turn in your old furnace for one of the newer, more energy-efficient models. By sticking to a regular maintenance program, you can get peak performance from your furnace and avoid equipment repairs or replacement. More importantly, you can keep your heating costs in check.

Scammers Swarm Holiday Shoppers What better time than the holidays to relieve you of your cash? That’s how the scammers think. While you’re busily making purchases, they’re looking for opportunities to make some of their own -- on your dime. Here are some tips to help you avoid being a victim: • In the mall, wear slacks (jeans are best) and keep your wallet in a front pocket. Leave purses in the trunk of the car. • Don’t take all your credit cards with you. Only take the ones you’ll use that day. • Keep an eye on clerks when they have your credit card in their hands. It only takes a second for one of them to slide your card through a reader and capture your number. • Be aware of your surroundings. If someone has a cell phone near you, they might be trying to capture an image of your creditcard number. • If you need to pull cash out of an ATM, do it at your own bank before you shop. Even then, look at the machine carefully to make sure there is no card reader attached to the front. • After you’ve been shopping, if you’ve used a credit card, call the automated number the next morning and be sure that there are no charges that you don’t expect. • Use the Internet to track sales and gather comparison information, but unless you absolutely must, don’t order online. If you’re truly Net-savvy and must make online purchases (and your virus protection is updated daily), stick with the big companies. Even then your information isn’t necessarily secure. Be sure that “https” appears in the site’s address or a locked padlock in the corner of the screen, and use a different sign-in name and password for each site where you make purchases. Look for sellers who have a Two contact number and callhow instead, turkeyphone hunters were contemplating to hunt if possible. • Don’t let mail stay overnight in the box outside your house. wild turkeys, which are known for their excellent Some scammers will go for full identity theft at this time of the hearing ability.
