RIDES, ROADS & MORE (continued): • Driving the long haul to a specific destination requires choosing a route. It’s easy now, but, following World War II, the U.S. government was faced with a problem: many Americans buying cars and not enough roads on which to drive them. The solution was the Federal Highway System. The major routes are denoted by one or two numbers, and spurs off of them are three-numbered routes. North-south routes bear odd numbers, and east-west routes bear even numbers. Route numbers become larger as one moves from east to west or north to south. • As more and more cars started to overwhelm the Federal Highway System, a need grew for a bigger route system. The government embarked on the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s. A second factor bearing on the design for this system was national defense. If the country was threatened by an invasion, a way was needed to quickly transport resources to the region under threat. The Interstate System provided for multi-lane highways with limited access and no traffic lights. The numbering system for these roads is the opposite of the Federal Highway System routes; the route numbers increase for the odd-numbered, north-south routes going from west to east. (For example, I-5 runs from California to Washington, and I-95 runs from Maine to Florida.) They increase for the evennumbered, east-west routes going from south to north. (For example, I-10 runs from California to Florida, and I-90 runs from Washington to Massachusetts.)

• With the roads in place, now it is possible to travel fast on the interstates or take the scenic slower routes to see more of the country. • A Federal Highway Administration program that was started in 1991 designates some roads as “America’s Byways.” There are 150 designated Byways in 46 states that are worth a drive. For some near you, visit www.byways.org. Within the “Byways” designation there are “National Scenic Byways” and “All-American Roads” based on cultural, archaeological, historic, scenic, natural and recreational qualities.

This Policeman pulled a car over and told the man driving that he was going 50 mph in a 40 mph zone. "I was only going 40!" the driver protested. "Not according to my radar," the officer replied. "Yes, I was!" the man shouted back. "No you weren't!" the policeman said, starting to get annoyed. With that, the man's wife leaned toward the window and said, "Officer, I should warn you not to argue with my husband when he's been drinking."

It can’t be driven in the winter, but the Beartooth Highway (U.S. 212) is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies and is designated as a “National Scenic Byway.” The road provides access to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park in northern Wyoming and southern Montana in a rugged area with 20 peaks reaching 12,000 feet in elevation. Because of its high elevation and also because the northeast Yellowstone entrance closes to auto traffic in the winter, this road is only opened about four and one-half months each year. Beartooth Pass (the highest point) is 10,947 feet in elevation and offers stunning views.

• Just so you know: “The Long and Winding Road” was the last No. 1 song by the Beatles in the United States, beginning a 10-week run at the top of the Billboard chart on May 23, 1970. It was the last single released by the band before their breakup. Paul McCartney wrote the song from his home in Scotland. Possible inspiration for the song was B842, a 31-mile winding road.

A cop pulls over a carload of nuns. Cop: "Sister, this is a 65 MPH highway - why are you going so slow?" Sister: "Sir, I saw a lot of signs that said 22, not 65." Cop: "Oh sister, that's not the speed limit, that's the name of the highway you're on! Sister: Oh! Silly me! Thanks for letting me know. I'll be more careful. At this point the cop looks in the backseat where the other nuns are shaking and trembling. Cop: Excuse me, Sister, what's wrong with your friends back there? They're shaking something terrible. Sister: Oh, we just got off of highway 119.

The scenic drive is between Natchez, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee. There are many markers along the route pointing out historical events or places. One is a monument at Grinder’s Stand in Tennessee where Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, died mysteriously on the Trace in 1809. Also, the Natchez Trace Parkway was named one of the country’s top ten road biking destinations by ESPN (Entertainment Sports Programming Network).

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver

• It was comedian-turned-U.S. Senator Al Franken who made the following sage observation: “Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.” • Those who study such things say that 1 percent of the world’s lizard species have no males. The females reproduce by parthenogenesis, which produces offspring that are clones of their mothers. • Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Sony’s eReader -- it seems that everywhere you look these days people are reading onscreen. You may not realize, however, just how long digital books have been around. The first ebook was manually typed into a computer way back in 1971, when Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, chose the Declaration of Independence to be the first literature so digitized. • A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time. • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you drink 22.7 gallons of coffee every year. The surprising thing about that statistic isn’t how much it is, though -- it’s how little. It seems that in the 1940s, Americans were drinking twice that amount of java. • If you look at the innards of a Boeing 747 airplane, you’ll find a whopping 171 miles of wiring. • If you consider surface area covered rather than population, the world’s largest city is in Inner Mongolia, where Hulunbuir covers more than 160,000 square miles. ***

Thought for the Day: “Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt that they are right.” -- Laurens Van der Post (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Bicycling is becoming more popular in the United States, whether mountain biking or road biking. One organization, the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA), is dedicated to: “Inspiring people of all ages to travel by bicycle.” ACA publishes maps for a route system over 40,000 miles long, keeping cyclists in mind by noting available services along the way and often steering riders toward low-traffic or scenic roads. Bicycle travel is good for the environment because it is pollution-free, healthy because of the exercise, and makes the journey (not just the destination) something to remember. Check Adventure Cycling’s website for great cycling information: www.adventurecycling.org • So, whether you’re going by bike, car, truck, motorcycle or recreational vehicle, or you’re buying a ticket and taking a trip by bus, train or airplane, long roads, short flights, mountains and flat lands are ready to be explored. Enjoy!

Sound Financial Moves Have Downside, Too For every positive financial decision you make, there can be a negative flip side. A news release from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling outlines just how to look at some of those decisions. Using automatic bill paying: Having payments automatically dealt with makes bill paying something you don’t have to worry about ... until you do have to worry about it because you neglect to delete those transactions from your check register and you overdraw your account. Bundling your services: You can often get a cheaper rate if you combine cable television, fast Internet and your cell phone into one plan. The savings disappear if you opt for a more expensive plan based on what you perceive you’re saving. Giving up the use of credit: The biggest benefit is that you no longer pay interest. That interest can be expensive, especially if the credit is used for items like groceries. You’ll be paying for that dinner for a long time. On the other hand, someday you’ll need credit, perhaps for a big item like a home or vehicle. Without a good credit history, you’re likely to be stuck paying atrocious rates or not be granted credit at all. Closing credit-card accounts: It can be so satisfying to pay off a credit card, and your reaction might be to close the account. Don’t. That credit is part of your overall credit profile because that available amount figures into the calculation of all your credit. When you delete a source of available credit, you change your debt ratio. Before you make any financial decisions, consider any possible consequences. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Possible Heart Attack? Every Minute Counts There’s one thing that seniors haven’t gotten better at over the decades, and it can be deadly: We delay too long in getting help if we suspect we or someone we love is having a heart attack. In a study of more than 104,000 heartattack patients reported in Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers compared the time it look to receive care with the rate of mortality from heart attack. The average time of delay in going to the hospital was 2.6 hours. There are two types of heart attack: STEMI and non-STEMI. The STEMI portion means “ST segment elevation myocardial infarction,” which is when a coronary artery becomes blocked by a clot and the heart sustains damage. Minutes count when it comes to getting care. The difficulty, researchers said, is that the patient can’t tell if he or she is having one type or the other. Only by getting to the hospital quickly and being hooked up to an electrocardiogram machine can it be determined. Quite often the symptoms of heart attack are initially mild. Rule of thumb if you experience any symptoms -- such as shortness of breath or discomfort in the chest or any other upper-body area -- is to call for help within five minutes. That’s right: five minutes. When you call 911, not only will you get initial care fast when paramedics arrive (faster than having someone drive you to the hospital), but once you get to the emergency room, if you’re brought in by ambulance you’ll be seen immediately. For more information, go to www.mayoclinic.com and put “heart attack symptoms” in the search box. The man sympathized and said "Why, he's a public servant and shouldn't say things to insult passengers." "You're right," she said. "I think I'll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind." "That's a good idea," the man said. "Here, let me hold your monkey."

• George Handel wrote the “Messiah” in 1741 in London at his house at 25 Brook Street. He wrote the enduring masterpiece at a very fast pace over a short span of about three weeks. He selected texts from Charles Jennens that encapsulate central Christian beliefs. The first part of “Messiah” prophesies the birth of Jesus Christ; the second exalts His sacrifice for humanity; and the final section proclaims His resurrection. • By the way, “Messiah” is an oratorio, which is a large (long) musical composition that is for an orchestra, choir and soloists. Oratorios are like operas but deal with sacred topics. • Handel’s “Messiah” was originally an Easter musical. It was first performed in Dublin’s Musick Hall on April 13, 1742, to a large crowd of about 700. Ladies were asked to wear dresses “without hoops” to allow more room for a large audience! • The first performance of “Messiah” in England was almost a year later on March 23, 1743, in London. King George II was in the audience and with the opening words of the chorus, “For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth,” the King and the entire audience sprang to their feet and stood through the entire chorus. From that beginning, where all were expected to rise when the King rose, the custom of rising for the chorus has continued. • London was the center for commemorating the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death in 2009. Handel had lived there until his death in 1759 at age 74. The British Broadcasting Corporation broadcast all of his operas, more than 40, and all of his keyboard suites and cantatas were performed during the annual London Handel Festival. Some of the concerts were performed at St. George’s Hanover Square Church, where Handel worshiped, and at the Handel House Museum, which was his residence. • The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic in Melbourne, Australia, has performed “Messiah” at least once annually for 157 years, starting in its founding year of 1853. They hold the world record for an unbroken sequence of annual performances of the oratorio.

George Frederic Handel was born on February 23, 1685, in Halle, Germany, to an affluent religious family. Handel is most widely known for the holiday oratorio, “Messiah.” You can probably find it being performed in a holiday concert near you. • George Handel’s father expected his son to grow up to study law and objected to musical education. When his musical abilities on an organ were overheard by a Duke, the Duke insisted that his father arrange for him to study music. At a young age, after his studies of law and music, he went to Italy for a few years and was greatly influenced by Italian music. He moved to England in 1712 and remained there for the rest of his life.

• George Handel suffered opposition to his music and had financial problems for years. He always remained faithful to his Lutheran upbringing and devoted to God. A close friend, James Smyth, wrote of his death, “He died as he lived — a good Christian, with a true sense of duty to God and to man, and in perfect charity with all the world.” Over 3,000 attended his funeral. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, and a statue was erected there of him holding the manuscript for the solo for part three of “Messiah,” “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”

• Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian. • Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States! www.localshoppingcedarrapids.com Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.

WHY BUY LOCAL?

Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

WARM UP IN HAWAII When you think of pineapples, macadamia nuts and orchids, what state comes to mind? It would have to be Hawaii. The 50th state of the United States was added to the union 51 years ago on August 20, 1959. • The “Aloha State” is mostly warm and sunny yearround. The average daily temperature is highest in July at 82ºF and lowest in January at 72ºF. The islands are the projecting tops of mountains with their bases reaching down to the ocean floor. As with mountains on the mainland, as one rises in elevation, the temperature decreases. The state’s lowest recorded temperature is 12ºF on Mauna Kea, recorded on May 17, 1979. • Hawaii and Alaska share a surprising U.S. temperature record. Both states hold the record for the lowest recorded maximum temperature, 100ºF. Temperatures rarely get extremely hot or cold in Hawaii. Mostly it feels very comfortable. • Hawaii consists of eight main islands and 124 smaller, mostly uninhabited islands, reefs and atolls. Whether you are surfing, just walking on one of the many beaches or seeking out the historical and natural tourist attractions, it can all be done in warm-weather clothing and flip flops. The mild weather and casual atmosphere are very inviting to visitors this time of year when snow is flying and temperatures dropping in many other places. • Hawaii is an archipelago, (cluster of islands) that spans a distance of 1,524 miles. It is the longest island chain and the most isolated population center on earth.

Two young men who had just graduated from Harvard were all excited and talking effusively as they got into a taxi in downtown Boston. After hearing them for a couple of minutes the cab driver asked, "You men Harvard graduates?" "Yes Sir! Class of '2010!" they answered proudly. The cab driver extended his hand back to shake their hand, saying, "Class of '78."

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me.

• Hawaii is known for its pineapple plantations. More than one-third of the world’s commercial supply is grown in the state.

I was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident.

• The Big Island of Hawaii is the world leader for harvesting orchids and macadamia nuts.

Someone had given me a little ‘tea set’ as a getwell gift and it was one of my favorite toys.

• Hawaii Highway 360, the “Road to Hana,” is one of the most famous highways in the world. Covering 52 miles, it runs along the eastern coastline of Maui from Kahului to the small town of Hana. If you want to see exquisite views of the ocean, lush rainforests and tumbling waterfalls, this is the road to follow. With 600 curves, including many hairpin turns, and more than 50 bridges, the highway takes two to four hours to drive and has been referred to as the “Divorce Highway.” Many husbands and wives have had major “discussions” while enjoying this drive!

Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of ‘tea’, which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was ‘just the cutest thing!’ My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up. Then she says, (as only a mother would know..) “Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?”

• You are probably aware of the large ranches in the western United States, but did you know that the largest ranch in the country is on the island of Hawaii? Parker Ranch near Kamuela has 480,000 acres. • There are many spectacular things to see in the warm state of Hawaii. Here are three to put on your “must do” list: Haleakala Crater, on Maui, is the world’s largest dormant volcano; Waialeale Mountain, on the Garden isle of Kauai, averages 488 inches of rain per year and is considered the wettest spot on earth; and Molokai has Hawaii’s longest waterfall, the world’s highest sea cliffs and the largest white sand beach in the state. • Aloha! (This word means hello and goodbye in Hawaii.)

WHEN A real-estate agency hadn't sold our house, we decided to do it ourselves. I placed ads in the local papers, spray painted a "For Sale" message on a sign board and posted it outside. When my husband came home that evening, he told me, laughing, that my sign was the most truthful one he had ever seen. Confused, I rushed outside to take a look. In my haste I had printed - "For Sale by Ower."

A man meets a genie. The genie tells him he can have whatever he wants, provided that his mother-in-law gets double. The man thinks for a moment and then says, "OK, give me a million dollars and beat me half to death."

Every year, more than 100,000 ladder related injuries occur, so when deciding which ladder to use, consider not only your own weight but the weight of any equipment you may be carrying. Using the wrong ladder for a job can lead to injury, so choose wisely.

An articulating ladder has the ability to bend and fold to adapt to your environment and is multi-functional in use. Some weigh as little as 20 pounds, which is a big benefit when hauling it from your garage to the opposite side of your house. An articulating ladder can do the work of both a stepladder and an extension ladder. If you want to purchase just one type of ladder, this would be the type for almost every use. It is, however, the most expensive type of ladder you can purchase and can cost hundreds of dollars. But it willbeaninvestmentthatwillmostlikelylastyoualifetime.

Most homeowners have at least one ladder for general use, and some have two or three ladders in various styles for more specific purposes. Generally speaking, there are two types of ladders commonly found in most homes: stepladders and straight or extension ladders. Both types are rated for load capacity by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). When choosing a ladder, keep these safety guidelines in mind: Type IA is the highest rated with a 300 pound capacity; Type I has a slightly lower capacity of 250 pounds; Type II is considered medium grade and has a capacity of 225 pounds; and Type III is for the lightest loads not exceeding 200 pounds.

Most extension ladders and step ladders are manufactured in 2' increments. Experts recommend purchasing a ladder that is longer than you think necessary. For example, the height of the gutter on a typical single-story home is 16', but it’s wise to use an extension ladder 20–24' in length for better support and stability. For a two-story home, a 24–30' extension ladder may be necessary. Go the extra mile with stepladders as well. The few extra steps you get by purchasing a longer stepladder will give you room to lean or to place tools while working.

Before using any ladder, it’s wise to inspect all nuts, bolts and hinges. It may have been a year or longer since you last used it and on wooden ladders, paint can hide defects. Here are further safety tips for using ladders: • No matter what type of ladder you use, always make sure the feet are planted securely on level ground before climbing. • When working above your head or when carrying materials up a ladder, experts advise fastening the top of the ladder to the structure for added stability. • Fiberglass ladders are the most expensive, but when working around electrical wires of any kind, they are the safest because they are non-conductive. • Never use aluminium ladders near wires. • Never work in windy conditions with an aluminium ladder. Its lightweight construction makes it a safety hazard. • When using a stepladder, make sure it is fully open and the spreader is locked in place. • Never use a stepladder in a leaning position as you would an extension ladder. It is designed to open and could easily do so when you are on it. • Don’t use the two top steps of a stepladder. The ladder can become unstable and top heavy in such a situation. It is designed to carry the bulk of weight in the lower half of the structure. • Above all, use common sense when working on a ladder. Don’t carry more than you safely should and don’t overreach. Be careful when selecting a ladder. No matter what type of ladder you use, safety should always come first.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On Dec. 11, 1872, dime-novel hero Buffalo Bill Cody makes his first stage appearance in a Chicago-based production of The Scouts of the Prairie. Cody remained on the Chicago stage for the next 11 years. Buffalo Bill Cody was the hero of more than 1,700 variant issues of dime novels. • On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop an obelisk of white marble, completing the construction of the Washington Monument. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that at 555 feet, the monument would remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. • On Dec. 12, 1914, the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its worst percentage drop (24.39 percent) since it was first published in 1896. It was the first day of trading since the New York Stock Exchange reopened in November 1914 after being shut down due to the start of World War I earlier that year. • On Dec. 9, 1921, an engineer at General Motors discovers that when he adds a compound called tetraethyl lead to gasoline, he eliminates the knocking that internal-combustion engines make when they run. In the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency required that carmakers phase out lead-compatible engines. • On Dec. 7, 1941, in an early-morning sneak attack, Japanese warplanes bomb the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the United States enters World War II. Two hundred Japanese aircraft destroyed or damaged 18 U.S. ships and killed 2,400 Americans. • On Dec. 10, 1967, soul legend Otis Redding dies in a plane crash near Madison, Wisc. He was 26. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” would be released in its “unfinished” form several weeks later. The whistled verse was a placeholder for additional lyrics that Redding had yet to write. • On Dec. 8, 1980, John Lennon is shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside his apartment building in New York City. Later that evening, police took Chapman into custody peaceably after finding him reading a copy of “The Catcher in the Rye” at the site of the shooting. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
