• The entertainment industry’s Blue Man Group has been performing together since 1987. These anonymous “mute” artists dress in black clothing and wear blue grease paint over latex caps. Their percussive instruments include the electric zither, hammered dulcimer, the “drum wall” (a two-story structure with seven percussion stations) and a mixture of varied PVC pipes. It is their habit not to speak with members of the audience, and if you ask for an autograph, expect a smear of blue paint.

• There are about 700 different species of flowering plants in the Indigofera genus, which are plants that produce indigo dye. The ancients in Tibet and India used this color to make their prayer shawls, as they believed the color strengthened their concentration and spirituality. Most indigo dye used today in the coloring of denim is synthetic.

• The word “blue” has found its way into many terms in the English language. Of course, if you’re feeling blue, you’re unhappy or downcast. Yet, conversely, if blue skies are coming your way, it means that happy times are imminent. If you use blue language, it is characterized by profanity or cursing. Were you born into the nobility or aristocracy? You might be described as a blueblood. Has something hit you out of the blue? It seemingly came from nowhere at an unexpected time. Someone who’s done a blue-ribbon job has put in a top-notch, first-place performance. If an event is considered rare, it comes along “once in a blue moon.” A true-blue friend has proven himself to be loyal and faithful. Sunset Dr

• If you’re eating a Lactarius indigo, you’re munching on an unusual blue-colored mushroom, commonly known as the indigo milk cap. Grown along the U.S. Gulf Coast and in Mexico, it’s an edible mushroom (although there are a very few poisonous varieties) with a cap between 2 and 6 inches across. Its blue hue disappears as soon as it is cooked, and the mushroom turns a gray color.

PUZZLE ANSWER

Two friends rented a boat and fished in a lake every day. One day they caught 30 fish. One guy said to his friend, "Mark this spot so that we can come back here again tomorrow." The next day, when they were driving to rent the boat, the same guy asked his friend, "Did you mark that spot?" His friend replied, "Yeah, I put a big 'X' on the bottom of the boat." The first one said, "We better hurry up and get there! What if we don't get that same boat today?"

The United Nations uses a light shade of blue to symbolize peace. The Cherokee Indians of old considered blue the color of failure or disappointment. Their prayers were for the enemy to become blue and “walk in a blue path.” While blue is connected to baby boys in the Western Hemisphere, in China, blue is for baby girls. • National Public Radio has included the 1956 hit “Blue Suede Shoes” in its list of the 100 most important American musical works. Composed by Carl Perkins, it’s been called the first true rock and roll hit. While playing a gig in December 1955, Perkins overheard one of the dancers beg his girlfriend, “Don’t step on my suedes!” Perkins noticed the shoes were blue, and one already had a scuff mark. He ran home and jotted down lyrics on an empty potato bag. Two months later it was No. 1 on the charts. • The very dark shade of navy blue took its name from the uniform worn by British Royal Navy officers beginning in 1748. Prior to 1840, the color was referred to as “marine blue,” and the first recorded use of “navy blue” was that year.

• In the world of politics, U.S. states that favor Democratic candidates are called “blue states,” with red as the color for Republican states. A group of conservative Democrats in the U.S. Congress is known as the Blue Dog Coalition. • Mosquitoes are attracted to the color blue twice as much as any other. Similarly, honeybees like blue flowers the best.

• If you were in or near Springfield, Mo., at the end of April, I hope you took the opportunity to attend a popular local festival: the Typewriter Toss. Every year on April 22 -- Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day), appropriately -- a local radio station sponsors the event, in which contestants are raised in a lift truck to a height of 50 feet, then compete to see who can land a typewriter closest to the bull’s-eye painted on the ground below.

• In the early 20th century, a wealthy Russian living in Odessa died but had no children to inherit his estate. Instead, he left his 4-million ruble fortune to his four nieces. This may not seem unusual, but he did include an odd provision in his will: Each of the girls had to serve for one year as a farm girl, a washerwoman or a chambermaid before she saw any of the money. They did as the will instructed, and during that year of service each received hundreds of proposals of marriage. • The Sahara Desert is spreading southward at a rate of slightly less than one-third of a mile each year. • Showman Buffalo Bill Cody, one of the most flamboyant figures of the Old West, portrayed himself in five films. *** Thought for the Day: “All the world’s a stage, and most of us are desperately unrehearsed.” -- Sean O’Casey (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

All-Electronic Payments Coming If you receive a monthly check for Social Security, Social Security Disability Insurance, veterans benefits or any other kind of federal government benefit, you’ll soon need to change the way you handle your money. The paper check is going away. By March 1, 2013, you’ll need to decide on an electronic method of receiving your money. Your choices will be: • Electronic direct deposit -- the money will magically appear in your bank account. • Direct deposit debit card -- the money will magically appear in your card account. Signing up for the card is free. You can get ATM cash, make purchases, call for your balance and pay bills, although there might be fees for certain ATM machines. According to a news release, moving to an all-electronic system will save $1 billion over the next 10 years. It currently costs $120 million per year to send out paper checks. The government says that 80 percent of us are already signed up to receive our money electronically. And of those who do, 96 percent are happy with it. If you haven’t yet applied for Social Security, you’ll have no choice. As of May 1, 2011, anyone who signs up has to choose electronic payments. If you’re about to sign up and want direct deposit, you’ll need your bank’s routing transit number, type of account and account number. If you don’t have a bank account, you can receive a direct deposit MasterCard. To make the switch, call the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-333-1795, or inquire at your bank. If you’re already signed up electronically, you don’t need to change anything. 4th annual pet’s playhouse k-9 fundraiser:

T

hank You to everyone involved with the Cedar Rapids Police Department & Linn County Sheriff’s Canine Divisions fundraising event that was held on May 21st. With strong support from many varied businesses who donated their services and products made this third annual event a big success. There are many great causes that need similar help to fund the needs of their missions. Because the city and county canine are funded by private donations, our mission here is to help protect the citizens of Linn County by providing the K-9 services with the Police and Sheriff departments. An individual canine trained by 2-4 years of age serves 6-8 years. The successful candidate, typically coming from Czech Republic, Holland or Germany, is a Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) shepherd. The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) active canine division in its 14th year, began with one, initiated by John McDaniel. The Linn County Sheriff Department (LCSD) today has 3 canines, specializing in explosive detection and narcotics, as well as protecting their handler if endangered. Two reasons canine are so important to deputies is immediate backup and absolute detainment. Often two man-patrol CRPD backup response may be 3-4 minutes, whereas the single patrolling Sheriff’s deputy backup response may

be as much as 15 minutes. With a canine, the single riding deputy has immediate on-site backup. Working canine actually detain the wrong-doer more effectively than a human officer with gun drawn. That wrong-doer has greater immediate response and respect of the canine threat than the officer. We as individuals, our communities, need to step up, supporting our own protection. The individuals of the canine division are a tremendous resource for our law enforcers. The well-serving canines, a lower department cost overall than full time human officers, excel in: • traffic stops • defense against terrorism • drug detection • detaining/holding people • burglaries • officer protection Basic veterinary care is donated by an unnamed local vet. Special needs arising have to be paid. Beyond initial costs, the greatest expense is food. A bag of food lasts about 1 month. All the dog food is donated by Nutro® Natural Choice®, and Pet’s Playhouse. Thefor eventa onBenefit May 21st generated over Join us for the $10,000.00. This was made possible by 60 plus business’s who donated, the 50 plus volunteers that participated before, during and after the event, and the thousands of people who attended the event and donated graciously to help the officers continue this K-9 program.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: Downtown Young boys dream of playing pro football in the NFL, but the odds are pretty slim for most. If you’ve seen the 2006 film “Invincible,” starring Mark Wahlberg, you’re familiar with the story of Vince Papale and how he achieved an amazing dream. Let’s see how this young man rose to football fame after overcoming odds that have been described as “one in a gazillion.” • When Vince Papale earned an athletic scholarship to Philadelphia’s St. Joseph’s College, it was for track and field, not football. The college didn’t even have a football team! Papale, at 6’ 2”, and 195 pounds, was a champion pole vaulter. • Papale had always wanted to play competitive football and after college, landed a spot playing on a semi-pro football team, the Aston Green Knights, in the Seaboard Football League. He went on to spend two seasons as a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Bell of the world Football League, a league that folded in 1975. In 1976, Papale was teaching accounting, business and economics at his old high school, coaching the school’s junior varsity football team, and working a second part-time job as a bartender, all the while attending classes to earn his master’s degree.

WHERE THE PITA IS KING! Pita’z Lindale Mall-Food Court 4444 1st Ave. NE Cedar Rapids 366-PITA (7482)

• At a 1976 press conference, the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Dick Vermeil invited locals to open workouts and tryouts for the team. The memory of a quote from his high school coach and mentor, “Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make those dreams come true,” along with the urging of friends, convinced Papale, a long-time Eagles fan, to give it a shot. It was a decision that would change his life. • At the workout, Papale ran the 40-yard dash in world-class time, which earned the attention of the head coach. He was offered a tryout and a chance to work out with the team. Hours of hard work paid off when Papale was awarded a place on the Eagles and, at age 30, became the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL (excluding kickers) to play without ever having played a minute of college football. • Papale became a team captain of the Eagles, a position he held for all four years of his professional career. In 1978, as the result of his many charitable activities, he was voted “Man of the Year” by his teammates. • Unfortunately, a shoulder injury brought a premature end to Papale’s pro career in 1979. Not letting it get him down, he became a TV and radio broadcaster for eight years, then did a complete turnaround to become a commercial mortgage banker. • Papale’s challenges were far from over, as he discovered in 2001 when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Papale credits much of his current clean bill of health to remaining positive after surgery. He is now a spokesman for the cancer society and also goes on the road as a motivational speaker, encouraging those also affected by the disease. He was the recipient of the Vince Lombardi Award for Courage for his victorious battle against illness.

I had some words with my wife, and she had some paragraphs with me.

Locks, tresses, curls, mane —— no matter what you call it, it’s all about hair! How much do you really know about that mass of protein that adorns your head? Follow along as Tidbits “combs” through a few details about your crowning glory. • Hair is made up almost entirely of the protein keratin, the same ingredient that composes your fingernails. Hair color has its source in the cortex of each hair, which contains the pigment melanin. If your hair is dark blond, brown or black, eumelanin is the dominant pigment, while pheomelanin is the dominant pigment in red hair. Light blond hair results from having very little pigment in hair strands. As we age, melanocyte cells decay, the hair receives less pigment, and we turn gray or white. • Hair is the second-fastest growing tissue in the human body. Only bone marrow grows at a faster rate. We have hair on every surface of our bodies except the soles of our feet, the inside of our hands, and our lips. It also doesn’t grow on mucus membranes. • Folks with black or brown hair have about 110,000 hairs on their head. Blonds average about 140,000, and redheads are in the 90,000 range. • The part of the hair below the skin is called the follicle, while the part you see is the shaft. One follicle grows many hairs over a lifetime, typically about 20 times. You are born with about 1,000 follicles per 0.16 square inch. By the time you’re 25, that figure has dropped to around 600. By 40, it’s about 300 or less.

• Don’t panic immediately if you think your hair is falling out. It’s perfectly normal to lose about 100 hairs per day. However, a thyroid imbalance or iron deficiency can cause extreme hair loss, but the good news is that these two conditions are reversible. You’ll have to lose about 50 percent of your hair before it’s noticeable to others. • If you think that you can make your hair grow faster by cutting it, you’re mistaken. Cutting your hair has no effect on the rate of its growth. It does, however, grow faster in warm weather. And no matter what your expensive shampoo advertises, split ends cannot be repaired, but must be cut off. • Your hair will be healthier if your diet includes an abundance of eggs, liver, kidneys, herring, salmon, carrots, green vegetables and all foods rich in vitamins C and D. • We use the word “hair” in a multitude of ways in the English language. If we “let our hair down,” we behave in a more relaxed manner than normal. Giving excessive attention to or arguing about the finest details is known as “splitting hairs.” When we’re very irritated or frustrated, we might want to “tear our hair out,” and if we can remain perfectly calm in a stressful situation, we’re able to “not turn a hair.” Folks who over-imbibed and are suffering from a hangover might consume a little “hair of the dog” that bit them as a remedy.

• It’s the shape of the follicle that determines how straight or curly your hair is. Straight hair has a round fiber. Oval and irregularly shaped follicles create wavier or curlier hair. • It takes between 20 and 50 strands of hair for 0.04 inch of thickness. The average person’s hair grows about 4.7 inches a year.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Invasive Plant Can Overrun Garden Q: Help! I planted just one mint plant last summer in my flower and herb patch. It died off during the winter, but now several small mint plants are springing up around the dead plant and spreading out around the patch and into my grass. How can I limit this plant’s growth? -- Sandra H., via email A: Mint, like several other types of plants (including bamboo, jasmine and wisteria among others), will take over your garden if it’s not watched carefully. As a weed, it’s opportunistic and hardy. Of course, it’s also a great herb to have on hand, especially in the heat of summer when it’s a great addition to a frosty porch drink. As the plant is spreading right in the midst of the other plants in the flower and herb patch during the growth season, ripping all the offending roots out is not yet possible. Through the summer and early fall, hand-weed the mint back as close to its original spot as possible. Because the mint roots spread underground, be careful not to pull up the roots of surrounding herbs and flowers as you weed. Since you’re using it as part of the herb patch, don’t try using a weed-killing chemical on it. To keep mint from spreading beyond its roots, don’t allow it to flower - snap off flowering extensions if and as they appear. Once the growing season is over and all your herbs have been harvested, you can take more drastic measures. Dig up the garden patch, turning over the soil, so that you can locate and remove all of the plant’s root extensions. You may need to remove part of the lawn sod on which the mint spread as well, in order to locate and remove mint roots from it. Reseed or resod before the first hard frost -- otherwise cover with straw and reseed in early spring. If you plan to keep the mint plant, It's recommended to carefully dig it up and transplant it to a solid-sided pot. It can be then kept and tended above ground.

You just steam-cleaned the carpet in your children's bedroom, but this time, it didn't seem to help much. Few, if any, of the stains came out and the pile is still crushed. Face it. It's time for new carpet. With your children still in elementary school, you're not sure you want to break the bank and spend a fortune on new carpet. A less expensive option might be to recover the bedroom floor with carpet tiles. Coming in a wide range of styles and sizes, carpet tiles are easy to install yourself and can be replaced as needed. Should your child accidentally spill juice on a few tiles and stain them, all you'll need to do is pull up the tiles and replace them. The cost and convenience make carpet tiles a worthwhile option to pursue for many families. Before you run out and purchase several boxes of carpet tiles, do your homework. Find out exactly what is involved in installing carpet tiles and make sure you can handle the installation. Don't forget to ask about the pros and cons. Should you have to replace a carpet tile a year later, how well will the new one match up with the old ones? Will you actually be able to see that the replaced tile is new? For some people, there is nothing better than plush carpet installed by a professional over firm padding, while for others, the ease and convenience of replacing carpet tiles themselves overrides that. Once you are certain that carpet tiles are the way to go, calculate the square footage of the room where you plan to use the tiles. This will tell you approximately how many tiles you will need. Make sure you purchase extra for any mistakes you may make in cutting or require later for replacements. After you have purchased the carpet tiles, start prepping the room. First, carefully remove all of the baseboards and store them in a nearby room. Then remove the old carpet and padding, pull up any old tack strips and throw them away. Sweep, vacuum and mop the floor if needed so the carpet tiles will stick, and prepare to lay the carpet tiles.

What is Celibacy? Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances. While attending a Marriage Weekend, Frank and his wife Ann listened to the instructor declare, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.” He then addressed the men. “Can you name and describe your wife's favorite flower?” Frank leaned over, touched Ann’s arm gently, and whispered, “Gold Medal-All-Purpose, isn’t it?” And thus began Frank's life of celibacy...

To lay the carpet tiles, locate the center of the floor and work outward. Remove the backing from the carpet tile and press it onto the floor. Lay another carpet tile next to the center one, making sure the nap or pattern is going in the same direction and being careful not to create a crown or a bump at the seam line. Continue laying the carpet tiles in a square until you reach the outer portion of the room. Depending upon the dimensions of the room, you may need to cut the tiles to fit the perimeter of the room. Measure carefully and cut the tiles as needed with a utility knife. Then press them into place until the floor is completely covered. In just a few hours, you can remove the old carpet and recover the floor yourself with new carpet tiles. Then, the next time a nasty stain occurs, all you'll need to do is pull up the tile and replace it. No more dragging out the steam cleaner and hoping that you can get rid of an ugly stain.

THE

OOLONY IN N Serving fine food family style “NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): for over 75 years!

• French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner.

747 47th Ave. Amana (319) 622-3030 Open seven days a week, 7:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m.

• Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Banquets • Meetings • Special Occasions Dogs” like Pugs and 20 Yorkshire Minutes From Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term 6 Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat. • Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian.

• Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States! Information in the Tidbits® Paper is gathered from sources considered to be reliable, but the accuracy of all information cannot be guaranteed.
