Canadian celebrity Michael J. Fox, struck down at the height of his career, has used his adversity to further the search for a cure for his illness. Here are some facts about this optimistic individual who has chosen to overcome his disabilities. • The Edmonton-born Fox moved several times as a child, the result of his father’s military career, finally settling in British Columbia. As a 15-year-old, he made his acting debut in a Canadian sitcom, “Leo and Me.” As he devoted more time to his passion for acting, his schoolwork was neglected and before long, he was ﬂunking nearly every class. He made the decision to drop out of high school to pursue his career, something he now calls a “stupid youthful mistake.” His social studies teacher advised him, “You’re making a big mistake, Fox. You won’t be cute forever.” Fox achieved his GED 15 years after dropping out. • At 18, Fox moved to Los Angeles. It wasn’t an easy road as he struggled to make a name for himself, and he lived on macaroni and cheese for months. He had sold all his furniture to survive shortly before landing his breakout role as Alex P. Keaton on TV’s “Family Ties” at age 21. Over the series’ seven-year run, he collected three Emmy Awards. In the midst of the sitcom, he took on the role of time-traveling teen Marty McFly in “Back to the Future,” a huge boxoffice hit, followed up by two sequels. • It was on to “Spin City” in 1996, where he portrayed New York’s deputy mayor, a role that earned Fox three Golden Globes and an Emmy. • It was during the filming of “Doc Hollywood” in 1991 that Fox first noticed an incontrollable twitching in his finger. Shortly afterward, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a condition he chose to keep secret. On the set of “Spin City” he often kept his left hand in his pocket. This degenerative neurological disorder affects one in 100 people over age 60. Fox was 29. Those with the disease experience tremors, balance problems, slowness, reduced facial expression and an inability to direct their movements. •

Fox went public in 1998 and underwent a thalamotomy, a procedure that surgically destroys a portion of the brain’s thalamus, effective in dramatically reducing tremors. In 2000, as his symptoms became worse, he announced his departure from “Spin City.” He established The Michael J. Fox Foundation, devoted to research for a cure for Parkinson’s. He continues to take limited short-term acting roles, as well as providing voices for a variety of popular children’s films.

• Fox has added best-selling author to his list of accomplishments with the publication of “Lucky Man,” followed by “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist.” He maintains that staying upbeat is the key to fighting his disease and jokes about brushing his teeth, saying it’s “like having an electric toothbrush without the battery.” In his words, “There’s always failure. And there’s always disappointment. And there’s always loss. But the secret is learning from the loss and realizing that none of those holes are vacuums.” Time magazine has placed him on their list of 100 people “whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world.”

Picnic Food Warning The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning us about picnic food, and what it says applies especially to seniors. It seems there’s another potential food-borne illness: Listeria. Picnic foods -- hot dogs, deli meats, prepared salads, meat spreads from the deli case and soft cheeses -- can contain bacteria called Listeria. Smoked seafood and unpasteurized milk also can harbor Listeria. Even if the bacteria has been killed by cooking, it can be recontaminated because the bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperature. In addition to food poisoning, those with health risks can come down with a very serious infection after consuming Listeria-contaminated foods. Even for seniors without medical conditions, healing from an infection can include long hospitalizations -- or even death. Here are some food safety tips from the

♥ Use a digital thermometer to ensure that foods are cooked to the optimum temperature. For ground beef, that’s 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Poultry needs to be heated to 165 F. Cooked hams must be reheated to 140 F. Check the temperature of the food in several places. ♥ Wash hands in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food. ♥ Keep refrigerator temperature at 40 degrees F or less, and freezers at 0 F or less. ♥ Keep your food-prep surface clean, and use paper towels instead of dish cloths to dry the counter. ♥ Rinse produce -- even the kind with rinds that aren’t eaten. ♥ And those hot dogs and deli meats so popular with summer picnics: They must be completely heated to 165 degrees before consuming. A fairly common problem in American homes these days is too many electrical appliances. The more we get, the more power they draw and the more likely they will break a circuit or blow a fuse. Once they've done this, though, how do you fix it? To begin, unplug or turn off the appliances that were running in the area when the circuit or fuse was overloaded. Now, go to your fuse box. This may be difficult if you have never been to your fuse box. In most cases, your fuse box will be in either your garage or basement. You can get a clue as to where to start looking by examining the nearest electrical pole and seeing where the lines run into your home. Should your power be run underground, it's time to start looking. The box should be metal or plastic, roughly a foot or so long, and hanging from the wall. It should have a large pipe or cable running out of one end into either the ceiling or the ground. When the box is opened, you should see one of two things: a set of fuses or a set of circuit breakers.

If you are looking at a box of on-off switches, your house uses circuit breakers. They are the electrical equivalent to the emergency brake in your automobile. It is usually easy to tell which circuit breaker was tripped. When a circuit breaker trips, it doesn't have to be replaced. The circuit breaker is still in good condition in most cases and just needs to be ﬂipped back to the "On" position. Once you have done this, power should be restored to the area. If your appliances are still on or plugged in, the circuit breaker will turn itself back off, as you are still drawing too much power. Now that you have found your box and know how to restore electricity, there is one more thing that you should do while you're there. If your fuse box is not already labelled, you should consider doing so now. Turn off any appliances in the house that would be harmed by losing power in mid-operation. This particularly applies to computers. Then turn lights or some form of electrical device on in each room so you can determine what areas are affected by each switch. With a circuit breaker, this process is relatively easy. You ﬂip a switch to "Off," go search the house until you find the area without power and then label the space next to that breaker in either permanent marker or white out, depending on the color of your box. For fuses, the process works much the same way. Be careful with the fuses, though, as they are glass and can shatter if they fall as you are playing hide-and-go-seek with your electrical system. Once you have finished labeling your box, you should make a paper copy for your records. Use phrases like "north bedroom" rather than "Mary's room" to make the diagram more timeless in the event of different rooming arrangements. If you ever sell the home, be sure to pass on the diagram to the new owners.

Many talented individuals call Canada home. You’re probably not aware of how many familiar faces are natives of “up north.” Let’s take a look at just a few. • Rick Moranis played a nutty scientist who shrunk his kids in the 1989 Disney film, then “blew up” the kids in the 1992 sequel. Born in Toronto, Moranis worked at several local radio stations before branching out into movies. He retired from films in 1997 to devote time to being a single father following the death of his wife from liver cancer. • Montreal was the birthplace of the man we know as Captain James T. Kirk of “Star Trek” fame. William Shatner was trained as a Shakespearean actor, with regular performances at Ontario’s Stratford Festival of Canada. He hit the big screen at age 20 in a Canadian film called “The Butler’s Night Off” and moved into television three years later at age 23 as Ranger Bob on “The Canadian Howdy Doody Show.” He made his debut as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise in 1966 at age 35. • Ontario-born Rachel McAdams, star of “The Notebook” and “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” is the daughter of a truck driver and a nurse. She first excelled in figure skating competitions. As a teenager, she was acting in summer Shakespearean productions and working at McDonald’s. She was a top choice for the “Bond girl” in the 2006 film “Casino Royale” but turned it down. • British Columbia crooner Michael Buble longed to be a professional hockey player for the Vancouver Canucks but didn’t believe he had the ability. Instead, he worked six summers as a youth as a commercial fisherman. Regularly compared to Frank Sinatra, Buble has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. • Television viewers first saw him as a young doctor in his six-year stint on the hospital drama “St. Elsewhere.” Today, Howie Mandel is popular as the host of “Deal or No Deal,” both the U.S. and Canadian versions. Hall is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a degree in chemistry and zoology. • What do Canadian singers Avril Lavigne and Gordon Lightfoot have in common? Both sang in church choirs in their native Ontario before making it big in the music industry. • Nova Scotia native Sarah McLachlan started playing musical instruments at age 5, beginning with the ukulele. Her debut album came at age 20, and she has sold over 40 million recordings in the 22 years since.
