Volunteers please call.
We are in need of a some people who can help with our annual programs and in getting our new location operational. The Youth Center was founded back in 1997 when a need arose for a safe and supervised center where area youth can go. It has evolved since then and became a great organization that helps many in need. The Youth Center not only gives back to our Cedar Rapids community but also survives on the volunteers within our community. It is really amazing what happens when people come together to help others. With the countless volunteers the youth center feeds the homeless 5 times a week and puts on 5 free programs a year to help children and families with NO paid staff. These services are vital to our Cedar Rapids community and there is need for the Youth Center to do more. We previously had our Youth Center location in a leased building at 1006 3rd St. SE. This location was completely flooded during the 2008 historical flood. We had purchased land across from this location on contract with plans to build a new ultra modern recreation center for our organization. We still have plans to build this new location, however in the short term we are working to open a youth center at 1445 Mt. Vernon Road SE in Cedar Rapids. We have purchased this property on contract and have a general contractor who with the help of many local volunteers are in the process of getting this facility ready for occupancy. If you are interested to learn more about the H.D. Youth Center and possibly help participate with the needs of our organization, you are welcome to attend our next board meeting. We meet on the third Monday of every month. Next meeting is January 17th, 2011. We will be meeting in the club room at the Hy-Vee located at 20 Wilson Ave. S.W..

• Nearly everyone has, at one time or another, watched Bob Eubanks host a game show. He’s the only person to have hosted the same game show, “The Newlywed Game” in six different decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s. Eubanks was only 28 years old when the popular program premiered in July of 1966. He had begun his career as a disk jockey and concert promoter in the Los Angeles area. In fact, he produced the Beatles’ live performances, including their Hollywood Bowl concerts for three years, as well as the Rolling Stones, Barry Manilow, Elton John, The Supremes and Merle Haggard. These days, Bob travels the country as a motivational speaker. • Although author Jack London penned 22 novels and scores of short stories, he is best known for “Call of the Wild,” “White Fang” and “Sea Wolf.” He was basically self-educated with the help of a librarian at the Oakland Public Library whom he met at age 11. Prior to his literary success, he worked 18-hour days at a cannery at age 13, then signed on to a seal-hunting schooner to Japan when he was 17. At 21, he headed for the Klondike where the Gold Rush was in full force in 1897. Years later, he used the Yukon as the setting for “Call of the Wild.” At 24, he began writing in earnest, and earned the equivalent of $65,000 in today’s money in the first year. It’s long been debated whether London committed suicide at age 40, or whether he perished from the long-term effects of the scurvy he developed while in the Klondike. • How many people can name one thing that happened during the administration of the 13th U.S. President Millard Fillmore? Fillmore assumed the office following the sudden death of Zachary Taylor from acute gastroenteritis and was never actually elected president. During his tenure, California became a state, and the Compromise of 1850 was signed, limiting the spread of slavery. An avid reader, Fillmore started the White House library and was one of the founders of the University of Buffalo, New York.

• You may not recognize the name of A. A. Milne, born in January of 1882, but you most certainly have read his work. In 1920, his son Christopher Robin Milne was born, and Alan Milne spun a series of stories around the boy and his stuffed bear, Winnie the Pooh. The name of Winnie came from an American black bear at the London Zoo that Christopher especially enjoyed. “Winnie the Pooh” can be found in 34 different languages, including Chinese, Afrikaans, Norwegian, Hebrew, Macedonian and Latin. Christopher Milne was actually called Billy Moon by his family and friends and spent much of his life resenting his father and the books that immortalized his name. • There are few people who haven’t heard the satirical, humorous and often controversial essays delivered by Andy Rooney on the CBS News Program “60 Minutes,” a regular feature since 1978. Each week, this 92-year-old sits behind a walnut table, which he built himself, and entertains viewers with his thoughts on such commonplace topics as car gadgets, recycling, grammatical errors and “things I love to hate.” “I don’t pick subjects as much as they pick me,” says this CBS employee of 61 years and author of 15 books. Rooney was married for 62 years, losing his wife in 2004.

December 22– January 19
Drat, Capricorn. That thing you were hoping was fixed is on the fritz again. Replacing it might be more economical than repairing it. A special occasion draws near.
June 22– July 22 Business takes a back seat to pleasure this week, Cancer. Dine and wine, and watch your love life heat up. The crunching of numbers reveals a surplus.
January 20– February 18 For goodness sake, Aquarius. You open mouth and insert foot yet again. Lucky for you, no harm is done. That may not be the case next time, so think before you speak.
July 23– August 22 Lucky Leo. Financial concerns ease with a new source of income, and romance sizzles with the arrival of a gift. A colleague could use some advice.
February 19– March 20 Picky, picky Pisces. While your choosiness usually pays off, this time it gets you into trouble. Make amends and find a way to express your gratitude.
March 21– April 19 The love of your life makes an interesting proposal. Cast aside your reservations and get ready to have some fun, Aries. An art project begs for your attention.
August 23– September 22 Special times call for special measures. Do your best to fulfill expectations, Virgo. Health issues persist for a friend. Be there for them.
September 23– October 22 Lean times don’t have to spell the end to fun. Think outside the box, Libra, and you will find a lot of fun stuff to do for free. A favor is repaid in full.
• Born in January of 1961, Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky learned to skate at the Wally Coliseum. That’s the nickname Gretzky’s father Walter gave to the rink he made in the family back yard. Walter regularly told his sons, “Skate where the puck’s going, not where it’s been.” That must have been good advice, since Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player in the history of the NHL. He is the holder of 61 various records, including the only player to score over 200 points in one season, something he did four times. Over the course of his career, from 1979 to 1999, Gretzky played for four NHL teams — the Edmonton Oilers, L.A. Kings, St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. His No. 99 jersey has been retired league-wide and is only the second number in all sports to earn that privilege. Following his retirement, Gretzky coached and co-owned NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes for four years, ending in 2009, and he currently owns “Wayne Gretzky’s,” a Toronto restaurant. • The first sports hero to have his uniform number retired across all league teams was Major League Baseball’s No. 42, Jackie Robinson, born in January of 1919. When Robinson started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he became the first black major league player of the modern era. His career included the Rookie of the Year Award, National League MVP, six World Series and six All-Star games. He went on to be baseball’s first black television commentator.
May 21– June 21 Opulence is the theme of this week, and you will be pampered beyond measure. Enjoy it, Gemini. It may be some time before you feel this way again.
November 22– December 21 Wise up, Sagittarius. A young friend is attempting to pull the wool over your eyes and is close to succeeding. Fitness goals need to be reviewed.

• On Jan. 23, 1775, London merchants petition Parliament for relief from the financial hardship put upon them by the curtailment of trade with the North American colonies. Most critical to the merchants’ concerns were the 2 million pounds sterling in outstanding debts owed to them by their North American counterparts. • On Jan. 19, 1915, during World War I, Britain suffers its first casualties from an air attack when two German zeppelins drop bombs on Great Yarmouth and King’s Lynn on the eastern coast of England. The zeppelin, a motor-driven rigid airship, was developed by German inventor Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin in 1900. • On Jan. 17, 1953, a prototype Chevrolet Corvette sports car makes its debut at General Motors’ Motorama auto show in New York City. The car featured an all-fiberglass body, a white exterior and red interior, a 150-horsepower engine and a starting price tag of around $3,500. An AM radio and heater were extra. • On Jan. 20, 1961, 87-year-old Robert Frost recited his poem “The Gift Outright” at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. Although Frost had written a new poem for the occasion, titled “Dedication,” faint ink in his typewriter made the words difficult to read, so he recited “The Gift Outright” from memory. ¥ On Jan. 22, 1981, Rolling Stone magazine’s John Lennon tribute issue hits newsstands, featuring a cover photograph of a naked John Lennon curled up in a fetal embrace of a fully clothed Yoko Ono. The photograph had been taken just 12 hours before Lennon’s death. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

(888)219-3895 www.localshoppingcedarrapids.com Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.
WHY BUY LOCAL?
Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

One benefit of studies is that researchers can go back later to the data and look at it in a different way. In one recent case, the Wilmer Eye Institute arm of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine reviewed a study done in the 1990s and put together new information. Scientists took a study about the correlation between Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and diet, and considered how Omega-3 in fish and shellfish might play a part. Omega-3, a certain kind of fatty acid, wasn’t associated with health back when the original study was done. Now, knowing that Omega-3 is helpful in a number of ways in the body, they turned their sights to how that oil works in the retina of the eye. More than 2,000 seniors between the ages of 65 and 84 participated in a survey about what they ate for one year. The new analysis of that data asked whether those who routinely ate fish and shellfish were offered any protection from the onset of AMD. Answer: Yes, they were. Those who had advanced cases of AMD were much less likely to eat seafood with Omega-3. At the same time, researchers asked whether participants were protected from AMD by the zinc in crabs and oysters. The answer: No, they weren’t. However, we shouldn’t jump the gun. The researchers were quoted as saying that this is a “potential” way to avoid AMD. After all, it was a small study, and the participants self-reported what they ate. They’re calling this a good first step and saying that a randomized study should be done. If you’re concerned about your eyes, ask you doctor if you could benefit from eating fish or shellfish once a week.

MARTIN LUTHER KING This week, Tidbits honors Nobel Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., jailed more than 20 times and assaulted numerous others for his civil rights activities. • Born in January of 1929, Martin Luther King’s birth name was Michael Luther King Jr. He was named for his father, who was also Michael. When the family traveled to Europe in 1934, they visited Germany, and in honor of the German Protestant leader Martin Luther, both names were changed. • The highly intelligent King skipped the ninth and twelfth grades and enrolled at Atlanta’s Morehouse College at age 15. At 19, he already had his Bachelor of Arts in sociology and transferred to a Pennsylvania theological seminary, where he was elected president of his predominantly white class. • At age 25, King became pastor of Montgomery, Alabama’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. The following year was the first of his many civil rights activities, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The 385-day boycott protested segregation on the city’s bus lines, and was the result of the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a white man. During the boycott, King was arrested and his home was bombed, but he came out of the ordeal a hero, when the U.S. Supreme Court declared the laws requiring segregation on buses to be unconstitutional. • Most people have heard of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, but what exactly was his dream? One of his dreams was “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” King delivered his speech during 1963’s March on Washington, where 250,000 gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in the capital city’s largest gathering of protesters to that date. • Also in 1963, King wrote his “letter from a Birmingham jail” from an Alabama cell, after being arrested for leading a huge non-violent protest against racial segregation. He reminded his readers, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” As a result of the year’s activities, King was named “Man of the Year” by Time magazine. • In 1964, at age 35, King became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. His prize money was $54,123, which he turned over to further the civil rights movement. • In April of 1968, King was in Memphis, Tennessee, with plans to lead a protest march in support of striking city sanitation workers there. His flight had already been delayed by a bomb threat against his plane. He delivered his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech on April 3. The next evening, as he stood on the balcony of his hotel, a bullet fired by James Earl Ray struck King and within an hour, the civil rights leader was dead. That establishment, the Lorraine Motel, is now the location of the National Civil Rights Museum.

Do you have some artwork stored away that you would like to frame and hang up but not sure how to go about it? Well, according to experts, the eyes have it when it comes to framed artwork, and less is more. A large, gaudy frame will do nothing but detract from an elegant piece of artwork, especially when hung out of eye-level view. It's the piece of artwork, not the frame or where it is placed, that deserves to be highlighted. When choosing frames and deciding where to hang them, it's best to keep this in mind.

Once your artwork is framed, you will have to decide where to hang it. To protect your investment, choose a place at least 10 feet out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat and moisture. Ideally, valuable pieces of framed artwork should not be hung in the kitchen or bathrooms or above a fireplace. If you must hang a framed piece of artwork above a fireplace, back it with an insulating sheet of plywood. Hang the framed artwork at eye level. To protect your walls, have a friend hold up the framed piece of artwork while you stand back and eye it. Once you are satisfied with the placement, mark the position on the wall with a pencil and then hang the piece. If the framed artwork is larger than 16x20, hang it by hooks rather than picture wire, which will damage the frame. If hanging several pieces of framed artwork, lay them out on the floor first, starting with the largest picture and working your way out, and once satisfied, mark and transfer the grouping to the wall. Don't attach a light to the frame of the artwork. It will damage the artwork and the frame. When framed and hung appropriately, artwork can shine. Do the artwork you have stored away a favor. Frame and hang it right!
