• You might not recognize the name of Daniel Lawrence Whitney, but you’ve probably heard his work. Better known as “Larry the Cable Guy,” this February 1963 baby got his start as a disc jockey at a Blue Springs, Missouri, radio station before advancing to the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. He’s often heard saying, “Git ‘er done,” and “I don’t care who ya are, that’s funny right there.” You’ll usually see “Larry” in his trademark “redneck” attire — jeans, flannel shirt and camouflage hat. He named his daughter Reagan because in his words, “Ronald Reagan was the greatest president ever.” • Speaking of Ronald Reagan, can you name this February baby’s first screen role? It was the 1937 film “Love Is on the Air.” Reagan had actually started his career “on the air” when the University of Iowa hired him in 1932 to broadcast the Hawkeyes’ football games at the rate of $10 per game. Reagan appeared in over 50 movies, but his most famous is probably 1940’s “Knute Rockne, All American.” He entered active military duty during World War II in 1942, but because of his nearsightedness was prohibited from going overseas. He became California’s 33rd governor in 1967 and held the office for two terms. Although Reagan ranks high in popularity as a U.S. President, he was actually defeated for the nomination in both 1968 and 1976, before finally winning in 1980. His administration is remembered for the end of the Cold War. When Reagan died in 2004 at the age of 93, he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for over ten years. • Although we think of Gloria Vanderbilt as a jeans designer, she was first a painter, studying at the Art Students League of New York, and known for her oil paintings, watercolors and pastels. She also did artwork for Hallmark cards. She was born an heiress of the famous Vanderbilt railroad family, and, at the age of 15 months, inherited a half-share in a $5 million trust fund when her father succumbed to cirrhosis. It wasn’t until she was nearing 50 years old that she stepped into the fashion world, starting with a line of scarves. By the mid-1970s, her famous swan logo could be seen on clothing, perfume, leather goods and liqueurs. Vanderbilt is the mother of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper, who is the great-great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cooper himself was a model for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren from age 10 to 13.
Did you hear about the bingo person who woke her husband while she was yelling BINGO in her sleep? He started yelling at her saying he told her the dog has to stay outside at night! So, with Last Tuesdays Blizzard, I have great sympathy for anyone who had to spend the night with their loved one if they act anything like my little Debbie who had convolutions about bingo being cancelled.

An old county doctor went way out to the boondocks to deliver a baby. It was so far out that there was no electricity. When the doctor arrived, no one was home except for the laboring mother and her 5 year old child. The doctor instructed the child to hold a lantern high so he could see while he helped the woman deliver the baby. The child did so, the mother pushed, and after a little while, the doctor lifted the new born baby by the feet and spanked him on the bottom to get him to take his first breath. “Well, hit him again,” the child said. “He shouldn’t have crawled up there in the first place!”.

FEBRUARY BABIES (continued): Week of February 7th, 2011
December 22– January 19
A friend receives a promotion. This calls for a grand celebration, Capricorn, and you’re just the one to make it happen. A film brings an issue to light.
January 20– February 18 Budget concerns ease with the payoff of an old debt. Keep at it, Aquarius, and you will come out ahead. A gift raises the spirits of someone special.
February 19– March 20 Nonsense, Pisces. A coworker is not out to get you. They are just trying to make their idea known. Scratch their back, and they will scratch yours.
March 21– April 19 Design changes are in order. Do what you must to get them done, Aries. Travel plans come together just in time, and you know whom to thank.
June 22– July 22 Money changes hands wildly this week. Be careful, Cancer, or you may find yourself on the short end of the stick. Pleas at home do not fall on deaf ears.
July 23– August 22 An investment begins to pay off. Proceed with caution, Leo. This is not the time to spend with abandon. Peace prevails at home. Throw a party to celebrate.
August 23– September 22 The to-do list nearly triples overnight. Don’t be alarmed, Virgo. You will make quick work of it with the right help. A family secret remains where it should.
September 23– October 22 A relative is in dire need of advice. Be tactful but true, Libra. The debate on a project begins at work. Make sure you put in your two cents.
• Two Hungarian sisters, both born in February, achieved movie stardom in America. Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor were born the same week two years apart, Zsa Zsa in 1917 and Eva in 1919. Eva was the first sister to come to the United States, along with her husband, Dr. Eric Drimmer, a Swedish physician who later was doctor to film legend Greta Garbo. Although Eva appeared in nearly 30 movies, she’s best known for her portrayal of Lisa Douglas, the ditzy blond wife on the six seasons of the 1960s sitcom “Green Acres.” Zsa Zsa was Miss Hungary, 1936 and emigrated to the States five years later, where she had 40 film roles and scores of television appearances over the years. Neither sister was a stranger to marriage — Zsa Zsa had nine husbands, while Eva was married five times. • Nearly everyone has seen the stunning blackand-white photographs of Yosemite National Park snapped by Ansel Adams. Adams very nearly didn’t become that famous photographer, since his ambition as a child and young adult was to become a concert pianist. With a photographic memory, reading music and playing the piano came easily to the young Adams. At age 14, a family vacation to Yosemite led to the direction of his future. A gift from his father for the trip, a Kodak Brownie captured Adams’ first photos of the Park. By age 20, his Yosemite prints had been published. He went on to shoot pictures of every American National Park. My photographs don't do me justice they just look like me. - Phyllis Diller YOUR Family Portraits in YOUR home

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
• It was beloved British mystery novelist and playwright Agatha Christie who made the following sage observation: “It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them.” • Some toads can live for up to a year without eating a single thing. • Those who study such things say that not all your fingernails grow at the same rate. It seems the nail on your middle finger is a bit of an overachiever -- it grows faster than the nails on your other fingers. • Lawmakers in Corpus Christi, Texas, evidently once found home alligator farming to be enough of a problem that they felt compelled to pass a law making it illegal to raise the crocodilians in a home. • If you buy a postage stamp in Israel, rest assured that the glue you’ll be licking on said stamp is kosher. • If you (like me) are a fan of Krispy Kreme’s donuts, you may be interested to learn that the pastries have been made with dough from the same secret recipe since 1937. • During the first couple of years of life, dolphins gain an average of five pounds every month. • Despite the fact that famed magician Harry Houdini exposed a number of mediums and psychics as frauds, Sherlock Holmes novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle persisted in believing that Houdini himself was a medium.
May 21– June 21 The opportunity for additional training arises. You won’t get far without it, Gemini, so take the plunge. An auto problem persists. Take the steps to correct it once and for all.
November 22– December 21 Mistakes are inevitable. Admit yours and move on, Sagittarius. The need to redecorate becomes clear. Sketch out a plan and tackle it a little at a time.
• The subcontinent of India is steadily moving closer to the continent of Asia -- by about 2 inches every year. *** Thought for the Day: “Give all power to the many, and they will oppress the few. Give all power to the few, and they will oppress the many. Both therefore ought to have power, that each may defend itself against the other.” -Alexander Hamilton (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Guard Your Social Security Number Social Security numbers were first issued to identify those who were getting benefits. Now it’s become a national ID number, and far too many people have access to it. Theft of Social Security numbers is big business. With that little number, plus your name and address, thieves can steal your identity and take your money or run up debt in your name. At the very least, it can mean spending untold hours straightening out the mess when your credit report has errors. With that number, someone can get medical services in your name, and at your expense, or refinance your mortgage and take the profits. For those who’ve put together a nice nest egg, it can mean losing everything you’ve worked for over the years. McAfee, a computer security company, put together a list of the Top 10 places where our Social Security numbers are most likely to be stolen. Starting with the riskiest places, they are: universities and colleges, banks and financial institutions, hospitals, state governments, local governments, federal governments, medical businesses that provide equipment or billing services, nonprofit organizations, technology companies, medical insurance and medical offices. While it’s often necessary to give your Social Security number to get services, cut your risk by being careful. Send for a free copy of your credit report every year to make sure it doesn’t have errors. Invest in a shredder, or share one with friends. Shred any mail (unless you need to file it away) that has your personal information on it. If you’re hunting for a job, don’t automatically put your Social Security number on the application. Those applications often end up in dumpsters behind the business. Instead, wait until they hire you and provide the number to the appropriate person in Human Resources. READ, TUNE-IN & PLAY
Politically correct is a term which denotes ideas and policies seeking to minimize the offense of gender, racial, cultural, religious beliefs, disabilities, age, occupations and possibly many other categories in our society. Given the rule of being PC, it would be rather impossible to promote any form of humor let alone state ones personal feelings towards an issue. Given this fact, the freedom of the press would be abolished and we would not have the ability to hear peoples arguments or beliefs. Jokes or humour as we sometimes refer to little puns towards a certain demographic, occupation, race, age and all of the unmentioned categories that a joke is geared towards could never be told, printed or shared with others if censored. However that is not the case in our free and democratic society. But we as free individuals can chose what we watch, read and share with others. There is a lot of bad humor that should never be shared with anyone as it is very offensive and needs to stop. Bad humor can lead to hatred, anger and violence among the vast effects that will linger. I have always included jokes in this paper and I'm sure most of them could be considered politically incorrect by someone if you ask enough people. I have always tried to keep the jokes "clean" if I can use that as my use for censorship. The way I define clean is that if I would not want my 4 year old to read it, then I will not print it. However, any joke basically offends someone if you really think about it. I often have jokes that will include an occupation such as attorneys. Or how about cops who have glazed eyes? That stereotypes cops as being donut lovers. But is there anything wrong with that, I'm not a cop by I bet my eyes have been glazed a time or two. I recently ran a joke about Oprah, that did generate a few responses. Yes, I even questioned using it, but could not find anything else on Oprah that seemed better other then the one about the what you won't overhear at a sports bar. The joke seemed to have three politically dangerous parts that could cause readers to be offended. 1. Oprah was named, "Some will say never say anything bad about Oprah" 2. Oprah was arrested for drugs, "Never insinuate that Oprah is arrested, and never arrested for Drug smuggling" 3. Overweight, this can offend even people not interested in Oprah's great stature. Now I did ponder this joke for all of the above, and since I did, I probably should not have included it in this paper. I'm very sorry to everyone who found the pun inappropriate and I apologize to you and to Oprah Winfrey. Please keep your comments coming as I greatly appreciate your feedback so that I can deliver a paper which everyone can enjoy. I believe it is the Readers Digest that states, Laughter is the Best Medicine. Sincerely, Russ Swart, Publisher.

at the Helen G. Nassif, YMCA from 6:30 – 9:30 PM you can find crowds cheering, whistles blowing, leather basketballs bouncing and the likes of Mayor Ron Corbett or Super Bowl Champion Dedric Ward as a keynote speaker in attendance. Over 60 middle school students participate in the Cedar Rapids “Midnight Hoops” program. And over 140 local middle & high school students have participated in the three sessions of Midnight Hoops since late June 2010.
Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.
WHY BUY LOCAL?
Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.
Midnight Hoops was designed to be a social inclusion program to help Cedar Rapids, Moundview & Wellington Heights youth identify and embrace positive opportunity, through Basketball games, keynote speakers, role models, and competitive tournaments. The Midnight Hoops program now serves all 12 neighborhoods and provides a safe and motivating environment for middle school and high school students that come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds whom are at-risk of succumbing to the pressures applied by social acceptance. The students whom participate in this program are looking to overcome such adversity by seeking guidance, structure, and discipline among other invaluable life skills. “The YMCA is delighted to partner with the Midnight Hoops program in the Cedar Rapids area. We find the mission of that program to be very similar to that of the YMCA. It is designed to help kids display their god-given talents and to express themselves through basketball in a positive, respectful and responsible way. It brings kids of all backgrounds together to compete with each other and learn and grow alike in a healthy environment. This is the time of day that programs should be happening for kids so that they are surrounded by positive role models and healthy activities.” - Bob Carlson, CEO & President of C.R. Metro YMCA Jason Pershing & Trent Gaines have collaborated on this program since day one, with the vision of using basketball as a tool, in order to provide a safe, healthy, educational environment for the youth of Cedar Rapids. We emphasize “teaching skills in leadership, team work, accountability, and communication with team mates, the YMCA staff & facilities all while following the Midnight Hoops expectations of becoming a good person who makes good decisions,” Pershing explains. The Midnight Hoops program partners with the Cedar Rapids Neighborhoods Association and is also funded through grants written by the CRN.

• A rough neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, known as Pigtown was the birthplace of the “Sultan of Swat,” George Herman Ruth Jr. Of the family’s eight children, only George and one sister survived. His mother battled tuberculosis for many years, and when he was just seven years old, his father brought him to an orphanage/reformatory, St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, operated by the Xaverian Brothers Jesuit missionaries. There, Ruth Sr. signed over custody of his son, and for the next 12 years, Babe saw his family only on special occasions. He learned the trade of tailoring and shirt making at the school, and played in the school band. • Brother Mathias Boutlier was St. Mary’s Head of Discipline and took young Ruth under his wing, teaching him the game of baseball. In 1919, at 19, Ruth signed with the Boston Red Sox, and being the youngest member of the team, was given the nickname “Babe.” He was sold to the Yankees five years later and contributed to the team’s seven pennants and four World Series titles. Prior to his arrival, the Yankees had never won a pennant.

• A spot on a Negro League team, the Mobile Black Bears, came along in his junior year of high school, and Aaron was paid $10 per game. At 17, he was given a minor league contract with the Indianapolis Clowns, part of the Negro American League. Three years later in 1954, he started his major league career, one that would span 23 seasons. By 1955, Aaron had already made his first All-Star team, a feat he would repeat 20 more times. He spent 21 seasons with the Braves (first Milwaukee, then Atlanta). His final two seasons were with the Milwaukee Brewers. • In the final game of the 1973 season, “Hammerin’ Hank” tied Babe Ruth’s home run record of 714. During the ensuing winter, he received death threats and hate mail from those who didn’t want to see the Babe’s record broken by a black man. On April 8, 1974, in a game between the Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Aaron reached that goal on a pitch from Al Downing. In October of that year, he hit his 733rd home, which proved to be his last as a member of the Braves ball club. Within a month, the Braves traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers. • During Aaron’s first season with the Brewers, he broke Babe Ruth’s all-time RBI record of 2,217. Aaron still holds the all-time record with 2,297 runs batted in. His final home run, No. 755, was achieved during his last season in July of 1976, a record that stayed in place until 2007, when Barry Bonds hit his 756th.

• Just a little larger than the size of your fist, your heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces. The average heart beats about 72 times per minute, which is about 100,000 times a day. You do the math —That’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime. • Every day your heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood through your body’s 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during your lifetime. That’s about 1.5 million gallons, which would fill about 200 tanker cars on a train. • About four weeks after conception, a fetus’ heart starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twice as fast as an adult’s. At 12 weeks, its heart is pumping 60 pints of blood every day. • The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria, and the lower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates from the left ventricle, the largest and strongest chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about ½ inch thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only one body part, the cornea, receives no blood. • The word “cardiac” means “related to the heart,” and has its origins in the Greek word for heart, kardia. • There’s a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces heavier, but beats about eight fewer times per minute. • When you have a good belly laugh, up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your entire body. This can contribute to stress reduction, so laugh it up! • The world’s first successful human heart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The recipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Today, heart recipients live an average of 15 years. About 3,500 transplants are performed every year. After two years, about 80 percent of recipients are alive, and after five years, 73 percent of males and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that samegender transplants have better results. • The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009, when ironically, it was cancer that claimed his life. Kelly Perkins received her new heart in 1995 and has since climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn, Mt. Whitney and Argentina’s Cajon de Arenales.
Do you ever wonder if the Tin Man was to receive a Heart if he could have pumped his own oil internally

He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hypochondria most of his adult life. • On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mormons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary refuge at Sugar Grove, Iowa. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek. • On Feb. 7, 1914, the silent film “Kid Auto Races at Venice” premieres in theaters, featuring actor Charlie Chaplin in his first screen appearance as the “Little Tramp.” Movies converted to sound in the late 1920s, but Chaplin held out until his film “Modern Times” (1936). • On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied firebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rubble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender. • On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles are introduced to America on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing “All My Lovin’,” “Til There Was You” and “She Loves You.” It is estimated that 73 million Americans watched the show.
