ROB’S RHYMES
The Christmas Soul
Winter brashly barges in, pleasing beasts and Yeti The warnings are posted, with the plows at the ready Christmas looms large, slowly eating away at the time Uncertainty casts its shadow, kettles now beg a dime Memories may ponder, why expectations weren’t met Measured against years past, lumps of coal we’d get With a twinkle in children’s eyes, snow replaces Fall Winter does not remember, nor does it forget its call
Youth will look back at the magic the season brings A white Christmas will fill the spirit, better than things Frugality is not without joy, never let the Grinch win Even Scrooge knew, with a little smile, it lets love win Lights dance in the darkness, spoiling humbug pie Letting glee erupt, as fantasies ignore a parental lie A Tree with presents, helps make Christmas whole But only the meaning and its spirit, will touch a soul

THE MOST EXPENSIVE (continued): • The bulk of the world’s caviar comes from the eggs of the female sturgeons of the Caspian Sea. The Almas species of the beluga sturgeon is the source for the most expensive, and is a pale amber color rather than the usual black. The eggs are taken only from those fish between 60 and 100 years old, resulting in the rather hefty cost of about $12,500 per pound. • A year of tuition, room and board will cost you the most at Sarah Lawrence College. It takes more than $53,000 annually to get your education at this liberal arts institution located in Yonkers, New York. Famous alumni include Barbara Walters, Yoko Ono, and fashion designer Vera Wang. Other high-priced universities include George Washington University, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown University, all at about $50,000 a year. While we may think of Harvard, Princeton, and Yale as some of the highest-priced schools, they aren’t even in the top 25. • A crocus flower grown in the Mediterranean is the source of saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. The spice comes from the filaments, with each thread picked out of the flower by hand. Because there are only three filaments per flower, it takes about 75,000 flowers to deliver one pound of saffron. Price for that one pound can be as much as $2,700. The ancients used saffron for medicinal purposes, and modern medicine has confirmed its cancer-suppressing and antioxidant properties. It may also delay the development of macular degeneration. You may have eaten saffron in paella, bouillabaisse, or risotto dishes. • Even fast food is getting expensive. A hamburger meal in New York City can be purchased for $5.99 at a popular fast food stop, but in Dublin, Ireland, home of the world’s most expensive fast food, the price for the same thing is $9.16.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE (continued): • “Happy birthday, Mr. President,” crooned actress Marilyn Monroe to President John F. Kennedy on May 29, 1962. About 17,000 folks gathered at New York City’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate JFK’s 45th birthday. Marilyn performed in a fleshcolored beaded gown designed by Jean Louis, a dress which sold at a 1999 Christie’s auction for $1,267,000, setting a record for the most expensive dress sold at an auction. • “Life is like a box of chocolates,” Forrest Gump told us, but he may not have known about the box that retails for $2,600 per pound. The confections are created by Danish chef Fritz Knipschildt in Norwalk, Connecticut, whose establishment also offers the 1.9-oz. LaMadeline au Truffe chocolate truffle for $250 each. Be sure to call ahead, since these truffles only have a seven-day shelf life and must be pre-ordered. • If you visit Manhattan’s DB Bistro Moderne, you can dine on one pretty pricey burger. Order up the Double Truffle Hamburger and you’ll receive seven ounces of sirloin steak stuffed with three ounces of beef rib meat mixed with truffles and foie gras (duck or goose liver), served up on a Parmesan poppy seed bun. Add a side salad and some truffle shavings, and there you have your $99 lunch! If you’re watching your waistline, the single size is available for just $59. • Manhattan is also home to Nino’s Bellissima, which offers the 12-inch “Luxury Pizza” for $1,000, or $125 per slice. This thin-crust delicacy has to be ordered 24 hours in advance to give the chef time to obtain the six types of caviar necessary to make it. Lobster, crème fraiche, and fresh chives complete the list of toppings.

The Hearst Mansion shouldn’t be confused with Hearst Castle of Sunset Boulevard, located a little farther north along the coast. The castle contains 165 rooms, while the mansion has only a mere 29 bedrooms. However, the castle is an established museum, not a home. In 1947, Hearst bought the 1920s mansion and its 6-acre estate for $120,000 . In 2007, the estate’s current owner, who bought it in 1976, put the home on the market for $165 million. The home’s buyer will have some notable neighbors, including Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and David and Victoria Beckham

Tidbits heads for the hills this week as we visit Nepal, home of eight out of the top ten highest mountains in the world. • About 28 million people live in this country, which is slightly larger than the state of Arkansas. Contrast this with Arkansas’ population of about 2,855,000! With over 41 percent of its population undernourished and nearly one-third living below the poverty line, and a 45 percent unemployment rate, Nepal ranks as one of the poorest and least-developed countries in the world. About one-fourth live on less than a dollar a day. • Mt. Everest may be the world’s highest mountain at 29,035 feet, but Number Three in the world, Nepal’s Kanchenjunga is not far behind at 28,169 feet, and fourth-ranking Lhoise reaching 27,890 feet. • The peak of Everest was first conquered in May of 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay. Since that time, over 4,100 ascents have been made to the summit by 2,700 climbers. Climbers have included the sons of Hillary and Norgay. • Chomolungma (the Tibetan name for Mt. Everest) has been the site of the deaths of 210 climbers. • It was quite an accomplishment for 71-yearold Katsusuke Yanagisawa to reach Everest’s summit in 2007. However, he only held the record for Everest’s oldest climber until 2008 when 76-year-old Min Bahadur Shercha grabbed the title. • The Sherpa people of Nepal have an uncanny ability to tolerate high altitudes, and are valuable members of a mountaineering team. Edmund Hillary’s companion, Tenzing Norgay, is probably the most famous of all S h e r p a mountain climbers, along with Appa Sherpa, who has reached the summit more than anyone else, a record-breaking fourteen times! • You’d better have a loaded pocketbook if you plan to climb Mt. Everest. Fees for a guided climb are in the $65,000 range. The government of Nepal requires each climber to purchase permitand which about a Featuring Terrya Redlin Gregcarries Bordignon and $25,000 price tag. • Mountaineering apparel has changed a bit over the years. In the early days, the Brits wore their traditional tweed jackets, along with wool underwear and leather boots. • Mt. Everest is actually growing every year! This is due to the shifting of the Earth’s tectonic plates, which make up the planet’s outer shell, or lithosphere. As the plates press against each other, it causes the peak to grow by about four millimeters annually. • If you’d like to vacation at the world’s highest hotel, it will require quite a journey. Guests at the Everest View Hotel at 12,779 feet in the Khumbu region of the Himalayas first fly to Kathmandu, then transfer for a 50-minute flight to a small airstrip high in the mountains. From there, they mount up on a shaggy-haired yak, which transports them up a steep rocky trail to the hotel. Those folks who are not fond of these immense bovines can charter a private helicopter directly to the hotel. Each room has a view of Mt. Everest and features fresh oxygen pumped throughout the hotel to minister to those unaccustomed to the sudden high altitude. • Tragedy struck Nepal’s royal family in 2001 when the Crown Prince Dipendra shot and killed his father, King Birendra, who disapproved of the Prince’s choice of a bride. He went on to assassinate 10 other family members, including his mother, before turning the weapon upon himself.

Medicare: Making Changes in Your Coverage It’s open enrollment time again. Have you reviewed your Medicare plan and made any wanted changes to your insurance or drug plans? You have a few more weeks to get this done before the deadline on Dec. 31, 2009. Even if you’ve been happy with your coverage this past year, it’s still a good idea to review what you have because the costs could change. Did you receive your 2010 Annual Notice of Changes? Providers are required to send it to you once a year. The information includes what you can expect for co-pays and insurance next year, as well as the costs and any changes in coverage. It’s also possible that your specific drug plan might not be offered next year. If that happens you’ll be shunted off to another plan -- one you might not want. Reviewing your Medigap coverage (the policy that covers what the basic Medicare doesn’t) could well be your most important step. By law, all Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies must adhere to state and federal guidelines, but the costs can vary. If you need help (especially in sorting out the 12 Medigap policies A thru L), you can reach the helpline at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Representatives will assist you with questions about Medicare Part A (hospitalization) and Part B (medical insurance), too. They’ll be able to go over your health care choices with you, and answers questions about your rights and patient appeals and complaints. If you have a computer with access to the Internet (or can use the ones at the library), go to www. medicare.gov for links to a great deal of information. Right on the front screen you can find links to compare health and drug plans, find drug-plan coverage in your area, and learn ways to lower your drug costs. For Medigap information, click on Compare Health Plans.

There are three reasons why wedding photography is expensive. The first one is simple: risk. Second, photographing a wedding requires skill, and last, wedding photos are labor-intensive. A wedding is one of the biggest days of a bride’s and groom’s life. There are no second chances for a picture if a photographer misses a critical moment.

Refusing special favors, he was sworn in as an Army private in Memphis, Tenn., on March 24, 1958. Widely praised for not seeking to avoid the draft, Presley was seen as a model for all young Americans. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.
Americans love their snacks! Grab your favorite and read along as Tidbits examines some of our preferred nibbles. • It takes eight million pounds of sugar, seven million pounds of flour, and one million eggs to bake the 500 million Twinkies consumed in America every year. Introduced during the Great Depression, the little golden sponge cakes originally had banana filling. A shortage of bananas during World War II necessitated the switch to the vanilla crème center we know today. A billboard advertising Twinkle Toe Shoes gave creator Jimmy Dewar the idea for the name of his new concoction. Speaking on the success of his treat, Dewar said, “Twinkies was the best darn-tootin’ idea I ever had.” • Although the container looks like it might hold tennis balls, the tall tubular canister on the grocer’s shelf actually contains about 100 neatly stacked potato snacks known as Pringles. Introduced in 1968, these crisps took their name from a listing in a Cincinnati phone book, Pringle Drive in Finneytown, Ohio. Because Pringles are made from potatoes that have been mashed and dehydrated, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that they could not be called “potato chips,” resulting in the label of “crisps.” When the designer of the can, chemist Fredric Baur, passed away in 2008, he was cremated and a portion of his remains were placed in a Pringles cylinder before being placed in his grave. • Comedian Carrie Snow, speaking about her snack preferences, says, “ I prefer Hostess fruit pies to pop-up toaster tarts because they don’t require much cooking.” • Popcorn kernels pop because of the moisture they contain. When a kernel heats up, that moisture turns to steam, which has no way to escape. The resulting pressure builds until the kernel bursts. The temperature inside the kernel reaches nearly 350 degrees before it pops. Why are there unpopped kernels, or “old maids” as they are frequently called? It could be that the outer hull was damaged, enabling the steam to escape, or there wasn’t enough moisture in the kernel to begin with. • Nebraska is the leading popcorn-producing state in America, and is the source of about 250 million pounds every year. The amount of popcorn consumed by Americans each year (about 17 billion quarts) could fill the Empire State Building 18 times. • While serving as ambassador to France, Thomas Jefferson regularly enjoyed thick-cut fried potatoes at dinner and brought the recipe home to serve guests at his Monticello home. By 1853, these “French fries” were a regular item on the menu at a ritzy resort, the Moon Lake Lodge, in Saratoga Springs, New York, where George Crum was employed as a chef. One evening, the fries were not to the liking of one particular guest, who said they were too thick, and they were returned to the kitchen. Crum trimmed the size and fried them up again, but once again, the customer returned them. The irritated chef then cut them very thin and fried them to a crisp, hoping to annoy the picky eater, but the paperthin potatoes were met with great enthusiasm. It wasn’t long before other guests were requesting the new crisp potatoes, and the potato chip was born. The world’s most expensive wedding dress costs 12 million dollars. The reason for such a high price is the fact that the dress itself is embedded with diamonds. Unfortunately though no bride has walked down the aisle wearing it yet.
