HOLIDAY FACTS (continued): • “Jingle Bells” was used as a part of a practical joke played by Gemini 6 astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford during their December, 1965 spaceflight. They radioed back to Mission Control that they had sighted some type of flying object that looked “like a satellite…a command module and eight smaller modules in front” with a pilot “wearing a red suit.” This was followed up by their rendition of “Jingle Bells,” accompanied by a harmonica and sleigh bells they had smuggled aboard the craft. That Hohner’s harmonica and those bells can be seen at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, displayed as the first musical instruments played in space. • A 34-year-old copyrighter working for the department store chain Montgomery Ward in 1939 was the creator of one of the season’s most beloved characters, Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer. Robert May was given the assignment of coming up with a story for a holiday promotional booklet for distribution to customers to replace the coloring books they had circulated in previous years. May, who had been teased as a child for his shyness and short stature, used the same theme for his rednosed reindeer, who was made fun of for being different. Montgomery Ward sold nearly 2.5 million copies that year. When they reissued it in 1946, sales were 3.5 million copies. Unfortunately, because May was an employee of the store, they owned the copyright, and it was several years before May convinced them to allow him the rights. In 1949, May’s brotherin-law Johnny Marks penned one of the most loved holiday tunes of all time, based on the story. Cowboy singer Gene Autry recorded the song and sold over two million copies the first year.

HOLIDAY FACTS (continued): • There are about 21,000 Christmas tree growers in the U.S. Every year, about 35 million trees are sold. More Christmas trees are harvested in Oregon than in any other state. • The singer’s true love in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” gave her 22 turtledoves over the course of those days. What she received was a member of the pigeon family, native to northern Europe. The bird is about 11 inches long with a reddish-brown body, blue-gray head, and whitetipped tail. It spends its winters in northern Africa. • The word “Hanukkah” comes from the Hebrew, meaning “to dedicate.” This eight-day festival commemorates the Jews’ securing and rededication of their Holy Temple during the second century’s Maccabean Revolt. • Although President Franklin Pierce was responsible for the first decorated Christmas tree in the White House in 1856, it didn’t become a continuing tradition until 1889 under the leadership of Benjamin Harrison. The Pierce Family gathered around the candlelit tree in what is now known as the Blue Room. Electric lights on the White House tree made their debut in 1895, hung by Grover Cleveland’s wife Frances. In 1961, Jacqueline Kennedy selected a theme for the White House tree, a ritual that has continued to this day. Jackie chose The Nut-cracker for her motif, but the themes have been as different as the First Ladies themselves. Nancy Reagan opted for Mother Goose one year, while Rosalind Carter selected eggshell ornaments and painted milkweed pods handcrafted by disabled Americans. Hillary Clinton used decorations related to Santa’s workshop, and Laura Bush decided on a red, white, and blue theme for her final Christmas in the executive mansion.

He later documented the event in a painting titled “Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear.” • On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up the bar at the Carey Hotel in Wichita, Kan., causing several thousand dollars in damage and landing her in jail. TIDBITS AROUND THE WORLD: THE NORTH POLE This week, Tidbits heads north – as north as you can get! – to the home of ice, cold, polar bears, and Santa Claus. • Located at 90 degrees North latitude lies the Earth’s northernmost point, the North Pole. This is the geographic North Pole, as opposed to the magnetic North Pole, which is at about 82.7 degrees North latitude. The magnetic pole, which is always moving, is the place to which compasses point. Geologists have determined that it moves about 25 miles each year and is currently about 600 miles from the geographic Pole. This is due to the effects of underground molten metal and charged particles from the sun. • The North Pole has six months of daylight and six months of darkness. Sunrise takes place around March 21 and the sun rises higher each day until June 21 when the process is reversed, reaching darkness around the beginning of October. • All lines of longitude connect at the geographic pole, about 450 miles north of Greenland in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. These lines that establish time zones are so close at the Pole, it has its own region, using Coordinated Universal Time. • If you’re standing at the equator, with the Earth’s rotation, you are moving at about 1,038 miles per hour. At the North Pole, your rotation speed is almost nil. • There is no land under the North Pole. It is actually a shifting piece of ice up to 10 feet thick, floating on the Arctic Ocean, whose depth at this point is about 13,410 feet. At the coldest time of the year – February, when the average temperature is -31 degrees F – the ice pack is about the size of the United States. During the summer, when temps rise to 32 degrees above zero, it is half that size. • Robert Peary is generally credited as being the first to reach the North Pole, in April of 1909, although his achievement has been questioned by some for many years. At the time of Peary’s triumph, fellow American Frederick Cook announced that he had reached the Pole in April, 1908, although Cook failed to provide sufficient proof that he had done so. Others believe that Peary and the five others in his party missed the Pole by several miles, although Peary did provide sextant readings that seem to indicate otherwise. It took Peary 18 years of expeditions to finally accomplish this monumental feat.

• Drawings in Harper’s Weekly established the North Pole as home to the residence and workshop of Santa Claus. In 1879, artist Thomas Nast sketched a young girl putting a letter in a mailbox, addressed to “St. Claus, North Pole.â€? Three years later, another illustration depicted children at the North Pole, surrounding Santa sitting on a box labeled “Saint Nicholas, North Pole.â€? An 1885 issue of the magazine featured a drawing of children tracing Santa’s journey from the North Pole to America on a world map, while the 1886 issue presented a sketch of Santa’s workshop at the Pole. • Rumor has it that the penguin population at the North Pole is in danger of being eaten by polar bears. There’s not a word of truth to this, since, although polar bears, the world’s largest carnivore, roam the North Pole by the thousands, penguins are found only near the South Pole in Antarctica.

A New Year’s resolution is a promise you make to yourself. Keeping that promise isn’t easy, though. Sometimes we choose resolutions that are impossible to keep because they’re too broad or beyond our capabilities. Or the plan falls apart the first time the going gets tough. Still, there can be benefits to making resolutions, even if we only keep them for a short time. Here are a few to consider. The specifics are up to you. • Volunteer. • Exercise. If it’s not fun, try something else to get the same result. • Make a difference in someone else’s life. • Sign up for a month of gym classes. • Don’t talk about health or weather when the kids or grandkids call. • Cross things off your to-do list. • Read every day. • Take up a sport. Get a few lessons so you get a good start. • Buy a few extra cans of food each week at the grocery store and deliver to the food bank at the end of the month. • Work the newspaper puzzles daily. • Acquire a new skill. • Break an unhealthy habit and acquire a healthy one. • Learn to meditate, and do it every day, or try yoga or Tai Chi. • Listen twice as often as you speak. • Sign up for a class. When it’s over, sign up for another one. • Borrow travel videos from the library. • Subscribe to a new monthly magazine, or read it at the library. It’s OK if you break a resolution. It really is. Just try again and adjust your goals, or pick another one. Perhaps one of your resolutions will become a pleasurable habit. After all, it’s all about creating a new beginning. TOYS AND GAMES Christmas morning has children of all ages running to see what treasures are nestled under the boughs of the tree. Tidbits looks at some of our favorites over the years. • During World War II, Japan was attacking countries who supplied America with rubber, creating a serious shortage. Many scientists were hard at work attempting to develop a synthetic rubber. An engineer at General Electric combined boric acid and silicone oil during one experiment and inadvertently dropped some of the sticky compound on the floor. It bounced! But it didn’t work for their rubber substitute purposes. Five years later, a place was found for this gooey substance – on the toy store shelves. It became known as Silly Putty and was sold in a plastic egg. It was soon a best seller, and in 1968, it even went to the moon with the Apollo 8 astronauts. • More than 4,500 tons of Silly Putty have been sold since 1950. This silly stuff is even part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute with other items from the 1950s considered to have “shaped American culture.” • The popular dice game Yahtzee started out as “The Yacht Game,” simply because it was invented on a yacht. In 1954, a wealthy Canadian couple who enjoyed playing games on their private vessel came up with a game to play, then made a few copies for their friends. Before long, friends of friends wanted a copy, and the couple sold out their rights to a company that promptly changed the name. It’s estimated that 100 million play the game on a regular basis. • Frank Lloyd Wright is considered by many to be the greatest architect of all time. But his son John Lloyd Wright built his own fair share of houses, only on a much smaller scale. After studying his father’s techniques for the foundations of an earthquake-proof structure in Japan, the younger Wright invented a child’s building set with pieces of notched redwood. He introduced them to the public in 1924, marketed under the name of Lincoln Logs. Although in later years, the switch was made to plastic pieces, the logs are back to the original wood once again. • Everyone’s favorite word game, Scrabble, has undergone a few name changes over the years. First developed in 1931, its architect inventor Alfred Butts called his new game Lexico. But when he applied for a patent for his new creation, it was turned down. Butts tried submitting his idea to both Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley, and was refused. A name change to Criss-Crosswords didn’t do much to help his case. It wasn’t until 1948 that the name Scrabble came along and success at last! The game is now available in 29 different languages and more than 100 million sets have been sold over the years. Alfred Butts lived to see the first Scrabble world championship, held in London in 1991. He was 91 years old at the time. • On an outing with friends in 1980, a young video game designer, Tohru Iwatani, helped himself to the first slice of their large pizza. As he looked at the pizza with one slice missing, he was inspired to create a game with a character resembling that pizza, one who gobbled up dots, fruits, and ghosts. Pac-Man was born! During its first year of sales, more than 100,000 coin-operated PacMan machines were sold around the world, and since that time, its revenues have totaled over $100 million. Not bad when you consider that is 25 cents at a time! “I could never understand why my parents wouldn’t buy me Hasbro’s “Red-Light District Play Set.”
