This tradition is not as strong as it once was. Appropriately, this region is called the Easter Lily Capital of the World.

EASTER (continued): • In the Ukraine city of Kolomyia, there is an egg-shaped building, the Pysanka Museum, that showcases Ukrainian Easter eggs known as pysanky (plural; singular is psanka). The eggs are decorated using beeswax in a wax resist method, and this folk art has been around for thousands of years. There are over 10,000 pysanky in the museum that opened in September 2000. • The world’s largest pysanka is located in the small town of Vegreville, Alberta. This artwork was chosen by the many Ukrainian immigrants in the region to honor the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in their centennial year of 1975. It has inscriptions written in English, Ukrainian, French and German: “This Pysanka (Easter Egg) symbolizes the harmony, vitality and culture of the community and is dedicated as a tribute to the One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who brought peace and security to the largest multi-cultural settlement in all of Canada.” Professor Ronald Resch, of the University of Utah, designed the giant egg, the first computer modeling of an egg. It actually achieved nine architectural, mathematical and engineering firsts! The giant pysanka turns in the wind like a weathervane. Now, that’s egg-straordinary! • Eggs come from chickens, but another Easter symbol, the rabbit, is known for its high fertility. German settlers in Pennsylvania brought the Easter bunny to America in the 1700s. Children hoped to find colored eggs hidden in their caps and bonnets. Later, the basket would become the container of choice for Easter egg hunts of all types, both indoors and out.

In 2009, the biggest hit of Charlie Daniels’ career was 30 years old. His tune, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” featured some fantastic electrified fiddling. • Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on October 28, 1936, Charlie Daniels was a skillful musician on fiddle, mandolin and guitar by the time he graduated from high school in 1955. He grew up listening to and participating in Pentecostal gospel, bluegrass, rhythm and blues and country music. • Charlie refuses to label his music as country, rock ‘n’ roll or other style. He prefers it be called “CDB” (Charlie Daniels Band) music. • After high school, he hit the road during the rock ‘n’ roll revolution that was started by Elvis Presley. He wrote “It Hurts Me” with associate Bob Johnston, and Elvis recorded the song as the B side of his hit “Kissin’ Cousins” in 1964.

• Charlie wrote and recorded with many other notable singers through the years, including Bob Dylan, Al Kooper, Ringo Starr and Marty Robbins. His songs “Uneasy Rider,” “Long Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Monday, Haired Do It Again” were big hits in the 1970s. The June 15th 1974 album Fire On the Mountain became a Double Platinum success. &

• In the mid 70s, Charlie and his wife Hazel bought a farm near Nashville, Tennessee. They added more acreage, and now as his website states: “Charlie Daniels’ Twin Pines Ranch has been ranching the Western way for over 20 years!” • Charlie is also deeply patriotic and has done much to encourage support for the U.S. military. He has visited more than 20 military installations around the world. When Charlie visited bases and talked to soldiers who had little access to music while away from home, he started “Operation Heartstrings” to put instruments, CDs, DVDs and more into the hands of U.S. troops. The program was very successful, and now installations all over the globe have music for the soldiers to share. On June 25, 2007, the Pentagon presented Charlie with the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service, the Defense Department’s top civilian award. • One of Charlie’s lifelong desires became a reality on January 19, 2008. He was inducted as a full-fledged member of the Grand Ole Opry. While a complete list of his awards is too long to include in this article, two of his latest were his inductions into the Musicians Hall of Fame on October 12, 2009, and the Music City Walk of Fame on November 8, 2009, which is commemorated with a star on the sidewalk of Nashville’s Music Mile. Hope for an Alzheimer’s Cure New research has shown just how Alzheimer’s disease spreads, and from that could come a cure! A study done at the University of Massachusetts took a close look at a protein in the human brain called Tau. It was always thought that this Tau protein was a by-product of cells that had died due to Alzheimer’s. Not necessarily so, say the researchers. What made them wonder was that Tau cells were found in spinal fluid of Alzheimer’s patients. How did they get there? It turns out there are two ways for Tau cells to migrate. One is that those cells are secreted in a pattern -- and therein lies a potential cure. Follow the pattern, interrupt the movement of those toxic cells and stop the spread of the disease to different parts of the brain. So hopeful are these researchers that they’ve taken out a patent on using this new information to diagnose Alzheimer’s at a much earlier stage, when a cure is more likely. So, do you drink hot chocolate or hot cocoa? Is there a difference? The Spanish started the hot chocolate craze that still exists today. • Although most people refer to their chocolate drink as hot chocolate, the reality is that most chocolate drinks are hot cocoa. Hot chocolate is made by melting chocolate, such as a chocolate bar, and then whipping it with hot milk, water or cream. Hot cocoa is made using cocoa powder, not solid chocolate. Years ago, before hot chocolate or cocoa mixes were available, cocoa powder was mixed with milk. Now, most of us use a mix that contains powdered milk, and it is combined with water heated in a microwave.

• The Olmec Indians of Southeastern Mexico are generally considered to be the people who first discovered cocoa beans in 1500 B.C. The Mayans in 600 B.C. and Aztecs in 400 A.D. were also involved in the cultivation of cocoa. The Mayans established cocoa plantations on the Yucatan Peninsula. • Cocoa beans come from the cacao tree. The fruit on the cacao tree are actually ovalshaped and about 8 to 10 inches long. Each fruit, or pod, contains 20 to 40 beans. The cocoa beans are roasted to make chocolate. • In its early history, chocolate was consumed only as a drink by the upper class. After feasts, the Aztecs would serve chocolate in special cups made from a calabash gourd. The Aztec drink was called xocoatl and was made from cocoa beans ground into a bitter, coarse paste that was mixed with water and chili peppers. They sometimes added wine and drank their chocolate drink cold, not hot. • Possibly the first chocoholic, Aztec Emperor Montezuma II reportedly drank about 50 goblets of chocolate a day!

• The Aztecs valued cocoa beans so highly they used them as currency. Montezuma called chocolate, “the divine drink, which builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this precious drink (cocoa) permits a man to walk for a whole day without food.” • Columbus brought cocoa to Spain but didn’t know what to do with the beans – He thought they were a type of almond. It was Hernan Cortes, in 1521, who introduced the chocolate drink to Spanish royalty. The Spanish kept the cocoa beans a secret for nearly 100 years! • As other European countries learned about and traded for chocolate, new drinks were created by adding sugar, cinnamon or other spices to chocolate and heating it. Chocolate drinks again became a status symbol. • The first chocolate house in London opened in 1657. Chocolate houses became popular places for discussing politics, socializing, gambling and enjoying a hot drink. • Not surprisingly, because of chocolate’s popularity in Europe, chocolate was brought to North America by early settlers. In 1785, Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams: “The superiority of chocolate, both for health and nourishment, will soon give it the same preference over tea and coffee in America which it has in Spain.” • Today, 70 percent of the cocoa supply comes from 10- to15-acre (4- to 6-ha) family farms in West Africa. Cacao trees will only grow in tropical regions within about 15 degrees of the equator. The trees need temperatures of 65° F (18° C) and above, shade, 80 inches (203 cm) of annual rainfall and high humidity and can produce fruit for 75 to 100 years. • Drink up and think of yourself as royalty!
