Playoff Fever

• Tiger Woods makes good money playing golf, but not anywhere near what he receives from Nike, Gillette, and Gatorade for endorsing their products. In 2007, Woods’ golf earnings were about $12 million, while his earnings as a spokesman were closer to $100 million.

With heartbreak I have learned to cry in my beer Still with each new season they’ll get my cheer Every play gives me hope and for some I will die I’ll even accept a cheese head if a winner it’ll buy

• At age four, Jane Withers had her own Saturday morning children’s radio program on an Atlanta station, “Dixie’s Dainty Dewdrop.” By age 12, she was starring opposite fellow child star Shirley Temple in the 1934 film Bright Eyes. Thirty-eight more films followed over the next 12 years. At age 15, she ranked sixth on the list of top ten boxoffice attractions. Yet she is probably best known as Josephine, television’s perky lady plumber dressed in white overalls touting the benefits of stain-fighting Comet cleanser. At age 76, she was still hard at work, doing voices in Disney’s animated films.

ROB’S RHYMES

For years I have lived and died with their score Wondering why they couldn’t win just one more Wanting to proclaim that they were the very best But always a disappointing season ending test

How could I ever hope for anything but the same Flashes of greatness changed their whole game A team that was exciting and had come to play Giving hope so I’ll cheer for them one more day A new bandwagon for our new and old fans to ride Playoff Fever will bring out repressed Purple Pride Disappointment when we see it’s a one horse cart Another season why did they again break my heart

Of Linn County

• Some people might remember Brooke Shields more for her many endorsements than for her work in movies and television. Over the years, this Princeton graduate has been the spokeswoman for Calvin Klein, Ford, Tupperware, Colgate, Volkswagen, Ivory, and a pharmaceutical product that remedies sparse eyelashes. • Although McDonald’s, as we know it, was officially founded in 1948, their spokesman Ronald McDonald didn’t come along until 1963. The first person to portray Ronald was none other than Willard Scott, former weatherman on The Today Show. A study among school-age children indicates that Ronald McDonald is the second most recognized figure in the world. Only Santa Claus is more well-known. • Fantasy Island fans will remember Ricardo Montalban as the suave lord of the manor Mr. Roarke, but Chrysler owners recall him as a pitchman for the Cordoba and its “rich Corinthian leather” upholstery. The Mexico City-born actor made a big switch when he portrayed the wicked title character in The Wrath of Khan, part of the Star Trek movie series.

FAMOUS SPOKESPEOPLE (continued):

• A Halloween prank in 1938 caused radio listeners across the nation to panic upon hearing of a Martian invasion in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. It was the brainstorm of broadcaster Orson Welles, who adapted H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds into a convincing “news bulletin” filled with “eyewitness accounts.” Welles went on to greater fame in the 1941 film, Citizen Kane, considered by many as one of the greatest movies of all time. In the late 1970s, he became the spokesman for Paul Masson wines, and his deep voice is remembered for the slogan “We will sell no wine before its time.” Welles turned down the chance to be the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films, but did opt to narrate many of the trailers for the 1977 Star Trek movies. He was actually ABC’s first choice for Fantasy Island’s Mr. Roarke, but the producer insisted on Ricardo Montalban for the role. • Not winning the Olympic gold medal in skiing didn’t seem to harm Suzy Chaffee’s chances at becoming a spokeswoman. Although favored to win the gold at the 1968 Olympics in France, she came in a distant 28th place. Ten years later, she was hawking lip balm with the famous line, “Hi! I’m Suzy Chapstick!” • During the 1970s, Post hired Euell Gibbons, an authority on wild edible plants, to praise the wholesomeness of Grape Nuts cereal. Gibbons, author of Stalking the Wild Asparagus, told viewers that the crunchy nuggets reminded him of “wild hickory nuts,” and it was his “back-to-nature cereal.” When a celebrity is the center of controversy, many advertisers can't afford to wait the situation out. The damage may be done. Companies may have to distance themselves before their own reputation is tarnished.

STRANGE BUT TRUE O A K L A N D R O A D

By Samantha Weaver

● It was American journalist, author and humorist Don Marquis who made the following sage observation: “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.” ● A giant carnivorous plant has recently been discovered on a remote mountaintop in the Philippines. The second largest pitcher plant on record, nepenthes attenboroughii secretes a nectar that lures insects, frogs and even rats into its trap, where enzymes and acids break down the animal and digest it. ● There has been a lot of debate about whether older drivers should be required to pass driving tests in order to renew their licenses, with failing sight and diminished judgment being cited as reasons for the more stringent requirement. However, statistics tend to indicate that, as a group, teenagers are the more dangerous drivers, with their auto-accident death rate roughly triple that of the elderly. ● If you’re thinking about going back to school during this economic downturn, you might want to consider working toward a master’s degree in business administration. The average salary increase enjoyed by new MBA holders is a whopping 64 percent. ● The men’s formal attire known as the tuxedo takes its name from the Tuxedo Park Club in New York, where the clothing first became popular. The word itself is derived from the Algonquian word for wolf.

Herman’s Hermits were an integral part of the “British Invasion,” which included the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, and the Rolling Stones, among many others. Herman’s Hermits got its start in a Manchester, England youth club. • When the singer for the band The Heartbeats failed to show up for a gig, 17-year-old Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone was invited to step up on stage and sing a number or two. The members of the Manchester group liked what they heard and invited Peter to join the band. A name change to Herman and the Hermits (eventually abbreviated to Herman’s Hermits) was next, followed by hit after hit. • Peter changed his name to Herman when someone mentioned that he strongly resembled a cartoon character on “The Bullwinkle Show,” Mr. Peabody’s assistant, Sherman. However, the name was misunderstood as Herman and the band’s name came into being. • The band included a former hairdresser on drums, a telephone engineer on one guitar, a student on the other guitar, and an engraver on bass. Peter Noone had been a student at the Manchester School of Music and Drama, and already had a role in a British television series, where he debuted at age 11. • The Hermits were quickly signed to a record deal by Mickie Most, who wanted to make Noone the center of the group. Mickie thought Noone looked like a young John F. Kennedy, something to be capitalized on in America. • Fans of Herman’s Hermits will remember their first hit “I’m Into Something Good” (recorded in 1964 when Noone was 17), followed by “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am,” and “There’s a Kind of Hush.” • Back in 1911, British music hall star Harry Champion made a hit out of a catchy little tune written by Fred Murray and R.P. Weston. It was entitled “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am” When it was revived 54 years later, it was the fastest-selling song in history to that point. (Incidentally, R.P. Weston composed another Henry VIII-related tune about the ghost of Anne Boleyn haunting the Tower of London to avenge her beheading called “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm.”) • For part of 1965, only the Beatles were more popular than the Hermits. The Hermits matched the Beatles by having three songs in the Top Ten at the same time. Peter Noone was even on the cover of Time magazine that year at the tender age of 17. As the Rolling Stones began to gain popularity, the Hermits where edged out. • The Hermits sold over 50 million records and achieved seven gold albums, making them one of the most popular rock groups of the mid-1960s. • On his 21st birthday, Peter Noone married Mireille Strasser, a young French woman he had met while vacationing, and they remain married to this day. • The band dissolved in 1971, with Noone going on to a solo career. In recent years, he has had a recurring role in the daytime television soap As the World Turns. He was also invited to appear as a guest mentor on American Idol in 2007, on which he performed “There’s a Kind of Hush.”

Senior for every occasion - allNews “one of aLine kind”! by Matilda Charles For Special Orders or information on consigning write or call YEAR ’ROUND: Scammers Will be Out in Force in 2010 mytymecreations@aol.com 319-540-6243

One of my neighbors recently received a phone call from a well-known charity organization asking for donations. At least she thought it was the same organization calling. It wasn’t. It was a scam, with the thieves using well-known charity names to bilk people out of money. Rule of thumb: If someone is pressuring you to make a purchase or donation by phone, hang up. It’s your phone and you can take charge of whom you’re willing to talk to. Unless you make the call, you can’t be sure who’s at the other end. The Internet continues to be a nightmare of potential scams if you accidentally put in too much information or if you make a purchase online. Rule of thumb: Have two e-mail addresses. Use one for family and friends. Use a second one for everything else and where an e-mail address is required. Not all scams arrive by telephone or mail. Sometimes they come right to your door. The coming 2010 Census is going to be a problem in some respects in that the scammers will take that opportunity to knock on your door and ask for information. Or, they could send fraudulent e-mail that appears to be from the U.S. Census Bureau. Look at the Census site (www.census.gov) and read what you can expect if someone from the Census comes to your door or sends e-mail. Rule of thumb: The Census Bureau won’t send you anyone to your door asking for your Social Security number, credit-card information, debit-card PIN codes or personal information. If you receive email that looks like it might be from the Census Bureau, don’t take any chances. Delete it, without clicking on any links in the e-mail. If you have questions about Census e-mail you receive or someone who has come to your door, call the Census Bureau at 1-800-392-6975 or 1-800523-3205. HOW’S THE WEATHER?

As winter nears the halfway mark, Tidbits looks at storms, groundhogs, and weathermen. • We often refer to a snowstorm as a blizzard, but that’s not always the case. Technically, in order to be called a blizzard, there must be constant winds or gusts of at least 35 miles per hour. These must be accompanied by visibility of less than a quarter of a mile, heavy snow and/or blowing snow. All of these conditions must last for at least three hours.

• Meteorologists use the term derecho for a widespread storm system that carries winds of up to 80 to 100 miles per hour. Frequently, rapidly-moving thunderstorms accompany the intense wind. The line of the storm can stretch for hundreds of miles, taking out trees, power lines, and buildings, and creating high waves on lakes. The conditions can generate multiple tornados as well. The word derecho comes from the Spanish meaning “straight ahead,” while tornado translates from the Spanish, meaning “to turn.” • Hydrologists measure and study precipitation. They frequently use a pluviograph, which is just a fancy name for a self-registering rain gauge. • It is visibility that determines the difference between fog and mist. To be classified as fog, visibility must be less than half a mile. With mist, it’s five-eighths of a mile or more. • February 5th is recognized as National Weatherman’s Day. It commemorates the birth of one of the nation’s first weather watchers, Bostonian John Jeffries. Jeffries began recording weather measurements in 1774. By 1784, he was using a hot-air balloon for his observations. In fact, he is considered by some as the first American to fly. He and Frenchman JeanPierre Blanchard soared across the English Channel in a balloon in 1785. • The familiar face of Al Roker has appeared as The Today Show’s weatherman since 1996. He was no stranger to the world of weather, having signed on as Cleveland, Ohio’s forecaster back in 1978. His current job is a far cry from the career he initially wanted, that of a cartoonist. Fame runs in the family, as Roker is the cousin of rocker Lenny Kravitz. Kravitz’s mother was Roxie Roker, who starred as Helen Willis in the ‘70s sitcom The Jeffersons. • Cheerful Willard Scott brought viewers the weather before Al Roker, beginning in 1980. Unlike Roker, who has a degree in broadcasting, Scott majored in philosophy and religion. Although retired, Scott fills in as Roker’s substitute, as well as honoring centenarians on their birthdays a couple of days a week on Today. He has also found time to author six books, including a cookbook. • Perhaps the world’s most famous “weatherman” is Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog whose domain is a burrow near Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, the members of the groundhog’s “Inner Circle” awaken Phil from his hibernation early on the morning of February 2. Phil speaks to the club’s president in “Groundhogese,” a language understood only by the sitting president. If Phil sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are on the horizon. • The groundhog may be Punxsutawney Phil in America, but in Nova Scotia, the groundhog is named Shubenacadie Sam, whose dwelling is in Nova Scotia’s Provincial Wildlife Park.
