MAGNIFICENT WATERFALLS (continued): • Approximately 20% of the world’s fresh water is in the Great Lakes and flows over Niagara Falls, eventually emptying in the Atlantic Ocean. • You’ve probably heard the words, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume.” These were spoken by Henry Stanley, a reporter for the New York Herald in 1871 who was sent to find Dr. David Livingstone. The Doctor was a missionary, physician, explorer, and national hero in England. He had not been heard from in four years when Stanley found him in a small African village. • Dr. Livingstone lived in Africa from 1840-1873 and was the first European to witness the magnificence of Victoria Falls. The natives called the falls on the Zambezi River, “the smoke that thunders.” Dr. Livingstone named the falls after Queen Victoria of England. These falls, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in Central Africa, are listed as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World.” • Victoria Falls occur where a natural chasm in the Zambezi River sends water into a fracture in the earth’s crust. The falls form the largest curtain of falling water in the world, 1.01 miles (1700 m) wide. The roar from the falls can be heard from about 25 miles (40 km) away. • Now that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has been chosen for the 2016 Olympics we’ll probably learn a little more about the America of the South. There are some fabulous waterfalls worth visiting. • A November 2009 power outage at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, on the Parana River upriver from Iguazú Falls, caused a massive power outage, darkening Rio. Hopefully this problem will not recur during the games.

• Don’t be confused by the names Iguazú, Iguacu, Iguassu, and Yguazú Falls. They are all the same! The falls form a border between Brazil and Argentina with Paraguay being only a few miles away so several forms of the word exist. For Tidbits, it will be Iguazú! In the native Guarani or Tupi words, it is translated “Great water,” which is an accurate description. • Iguazú Falls is southwest of Rio de Janeiro and is actually 275 individual cascading falls along a crescent-shaped rim that is about two miles (3.2 km) long. The falls form a border between Brazil and Argentina. The best up-close views are from Argentina and the Brazil side allows the best panoramic view.

• Ironically, the local name for Angel Falls is AuyánTepuí which means “Devils Mountain.” It isn’t named Angel Falls because the water appears to be falling from heaven. Rather, the name comes from American adventurer, Jimmy Angel, of Missouri, who landed his plane on top of the mountain while searching for gold. His plane was stuck in the mud on top from 1937 until its removal in 1970. The plane has been restored and is now at the Aviation Museum in Maracay. Currently, a replica sits on the mountaintop as a tourist attraction. Also, when the plane got stuck, Jimmy, his wife, and two others had to hike 11 miles to safety!

MAGNIFICENT WATERFALLS (continued):

• The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Canaima National Park in Venezuela along the border with Brazil. The water drops 3212 feet (979 m) from a table top (flat) mountain – 80% of the drop is “free fall” – meaning it doesn’t touch the terrain as it falls. The most unusual thing about this waterfall is that its source is a soggy forest!

∫ It was Fran ois VI, duc de La Rochefoucauld and prince de Marcillac, a noted 17th-century French author and memoirist, who made the following sage observation: “Few are agreeable in conversation, because each thinks more of what he intends to say than of what others are saying, and listens no more when he himself has a chance to speak.” ∫ Rutherford B. Hayes, the country’s 19th president, was the first to install a phone in the White House. ∫ It was 1948 when the first vinyl musical recording was made. The piece of music so immortalized was Tchiakovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.” ∫ Although we tend to think of the bikini as a modern fashion innovation, two-piece bathing suits can be seen in murals in the ancient city of Pompeii. ∫ According to Romanian tradition, a sure-fire hangover remedy is tripe soup. In Poland, drinking sour pickle juice is supposed to cure the morning-after agonies. And if you’re in Germany, you should try the local remedy: pickled herring. ∫ The shortest street on record can be found in the small town of Wick, Scotland. Ebenezer Place is a mere 6 feet, 9 inches long. ∫ Do you suffer from pogonophobia? If so, you probably have some issues with Santa. Pogonophobia is a fear of beards. ∫ The Hundred Years’ War actually lasted 116 years. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAGNIFICENT WATERFALLS ® (continued):

• The tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River is Amicalola Falls, in Amicalola State Park near Dawsonville, Georgia. Amicalola is a Cherokee Indian word that means “tumbling waters.” The waters do tumble, 729 feet (222 m). A great hike of 500 steps (two staircases built parallel to the falls) plus a few connecting trails will take you to the top!

B.J. Thomas is the only artist awarded with “Song of the Year” for Pop, Country, and Gospel Music. He continues today singing his past hits to songs on his CD released in September, 2009, “Once I Loved.” • Billy Joe Thomas was born on August 7, 1942 in Hugo, Oklahoma but grew up mostly near Houston, Texas. When his Little League Baseball team had too many Billy Joes, he became B.J. • B.J.’s first hit was the Hank Williams’ song, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” in 1966. It became an immediate success, shooting to #8 on the Billboard pop chart.

• “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” is the song most people associate with B. J. Thomas. It was the #1 single for four consecutive weeks in 1970. Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford. • “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” was also featured in Forrest Gump; made the soundtracks for Clerks II, The In-Laws and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle; and was also featured in SpiderMan 2 in 2004. Dionne Warwick had encouraged Bacharach to get B.J. to sing the song. She and B.J. were both recording for Scepter Records. Apparently Bob Dylan and Ray Stevens had turned down the song. • In the early 70s, B.J. was plagued with drug and alcohol addictions leading to many problems including separation from Gloria, his wife. He made the necessary changes to his life for his own physical and spiritual health as well as for his marriage and family health. Married since 1968, B.J. and Gloria have three daughters and several grandchildren that keep them inspired. • In 1976, B. J.’s Home Where I Belong, became the first gospel album in history to hit platinum status – a million again! • In 1981, B. J. became the 60th member of the Grand Ole Opry. He is no longer an active member but does play there occasionally. If you’re not a country music fan, you should still visit the Opry; lots of history and great performances.

Are Cell Phones a Health Hazard? You can’t open the newspaper or turn on the television nowadays without reading or hearing about cell phones causing brain cancer. One state is even about to require that warnings be placed on the phones. It’s almost enough to make you stop using them. There have been multiple studies around the world with conflicting and contradictory results. Can cell phones cause brain cancer? The jury is still out. On the other side of the coin, there are some very good reasons for seniors to have a cell phone, not the least of which is being able to contact someone if there’s an emergency when you’re out driving. If you’re running late for an appointment, isn’t it easier to pick up your cell phone and call than to drive up and down the street looking for a pay phone? And what if you need directions? Now we find that there might be a plus to cell phone use: The phones might protect against Alzheimer’s disease. A study done with mice by the University of South Florida’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center indicates that exposure to the electromagnetic waves of cell phones might even reverse memory problems. Those waves, it seems, break apart the brain plaque accumulation that is part of Alzheimer’s disease. Not only that, but in the study, the memory levels of normal mice increased. Researchers wonder if exposure to electromagnetic fields could actually be a treatment for Alzheimer’s in humans, and they are currently working on that. Still, there’s nothing that says you have to talk on the cell phone all the time. And now, with this new Alzheimer’s research, maybe there’s a reason to keep the phone. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. • Unionville, Maryland holds the record for the most rainfall in one minute – 1.23 inches (3.12 cm) on Independence Day, July 4, 1956! Hmmm, wonder if it happened during a parade?

• The greatest rainfall recorded in a year was 1,041 inches (2,644 cm) from August 1880-1881 in Assam, India.

DON’T GET WET!

In meteorological terms, precipitation is any form of water, such as rain, sleet, snow, or hail that falls to the earth’s surface. We’re looking mostly at rainfall with these wet Tidbits.

• The record for the most rainfall in a day is held by Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Rainfall on March 15, 1952 was 73.62 inches (187 cm).

It was so cold... healthy people were kissing flu victims - hoping for a fever.

• India has some of the wettest places on earth. Both Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, which are only 6.2 miles (10 km) apart in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, receive more than 433 inches (1,100 cm) annually. Most of their rain comes during monsoon season, May to September. Now that’s a lot of rain! • Ironically, Cherrapunji is in the Khasi hills at an elevation of 4232 feet (1290 m) above sea level, a land so stressed from deforestation that the soil does not absorb water thus crops grow poorly. Most of the rainfall flows to rain-laden Bangladesh where the water is unneeded! • Are you feeling drenched? The range of precipitation in the world is from less than 0.1 inch (.025 cm) in some deserts to more than 900 inches (2286 cm) per year in the tropics. • The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948! • If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL. • While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet). • If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best! • Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!
