• One of the first quilting styles brought to America by immigrants was that of the elegant wholecloth quilt. The beauty of these solid white or colored quilts comes from elaborate, closely quilted designs that bring texture and shadows to the quilt. • What’s the truth about quilting bees? As usual, the truth has been romanticized. Old books and stories tell of neighbors all being invited to a “quilting.” The women would quilt all day, perhaps taking turns around the frame while others cooked up the grand meal that would be served to the men folk that evening. Then it was a time for singing, dancing and courting among young people. • Although quilting bees did occur, it is hard to get the facts beyond the idealized image. Fiction written in the mid-19th century puts such parties as early as 1800, but it is more likely they began to occur later in the century. • Many a “quilting” session included only women helping a friend or neighbor finish a quilt. Such a gathering would be a great way for women to get together to socialize. Women could share family news, exchange recipes, give childrearing tips and in general, support each other. It has been said that next to church going, quilting bees were the primary contact for women. • In isolated regions, pioneer women coming together to quilt helped them overcome the loneliness that so many of them experienced. • Many quilters found inspiration from the one book that almost every 19th century family had in its possession, the Bible. There are many block patterns that have their roots in Biblical stories and themes – “Balm of Gilead” and “King Solomon’s Temple” to name a few. But one of the most popular was the “Rose of Sharon,” which used the colors red, green and white, and was frequently used on quilts given as gifts to brides. • The most essential piece of equipment for hand quilting was the quilting frame, which consisted of four pieces of wood. Two strips long enough to hold the shortest width of a quilt would have heavy cloth attached along the length. The ends of the quilt would be basted or pinned to this cloth. The other two pieces of wood would hold the first two apart so that the ends of the quilt could be rolled up, leaving a tight section for the quilters to do their stitching. When one section was completed, the quilt could be rolled again, making a new section available for quilting.

QUILTS (continued): • Some quilts, called sampler quilts, contained many different patterns. But sometimes, women quickly stitched a quilt block together, not for future use in a sampler, but as a way to remember a pattern they’d seen on another quilt. • Some quilt patterns could be found in magazines as early as 1835, but they became more common by the mid-19th century. Magazines like “Godey’s Lady’s Book” tried to influence quilting styles of the day, encouraging women to try the more refined English patchwork and to use silk. It didn’t work. The majority of American women kept using the designs that they were accustomed to. • By 1890, catalogs offered quilt patterns. For instance, in India you’re likely to find toppings like pickled ginger, minced mutton and a kind of cottage cheese. Brazilians like green peas on their pizzas, Costa Ricans like coconut and Pakistanis favor curry. A popular pizza in Japan has potato, bacon and mayonnaise, while eel and squid also are common toppings. ● If you’re in the mood to indulge yourself -- and have the means to do it -- you can vacation in the penthouse suite at Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France. At a rate of more than $35,000 per night, it’s one of the world’s most expensive hotel rooms. ● An electronics shop in Seattle once advertised that it was selling stereos for “299 bananas.” As it turns out, 30some odd customers showed up to take advantage of the special -- in a literal fashion. QUILTS (continued): • In the 19th and early 20th centuries some quilters made use of an interesting material: cigar ribbons. Smoking cigars was a popular activity with many men at this time. To market themselves, many tobacco companies wrapped silk ribbons with their name sewn on them around bundles of their cigars. Women began collecting the colorful silk ribbons, and as a way to show off their collection, often sewed them into quilts. • In the mid-1920s, the colors of fabrics changed, so quilts changed. Many women stuck to the traditional designs, but executed them in the new pastel colors. New floral designs became popular as well. • One quilting method used during the Great Depression was called “string quilting,” a technique where strips of cloth of varying widths were sewn together. This frugal method allowed women to use every scrap of fabric and waste almost nothing. • While the mid-20th century saw a decline in quilt making, in the 1960s, quilt making underwent a renaissance of sorts. Interest grew, and by the 1970s, the number of individual quilters and quilting guilds was on the rise. Today, new tools and methods are keeping quilting popular and making it easier than ever before.

Are You Ready for Winter? There’s definitely a nip in the air at my house. Chances are your weather has turned cooler, too. It’s time to brace ourselves for winter, no matter where we live. If you haven’t had a flu and pneumonia shot, and if your doctors thinks you need one, do it now. Check your winter clothing. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Go for layers instead of one heavy parka. A shirt, sweater, scarf and coat are better at keeping you warm. Don’t forget to wear a hat! Do you have non-slip footwear? Stay warm inside the house, too. A lightweight vest is perfect for that. Stock up on antiseptic wipes and use them frequently, especially on grocerycart handles. Is your area subject to power outages? A selection of flashlights placed around the house will allow you to grab one quickly if the lights go out. Do you have drafty windows? Have someone help you install those clear plastic sheets on the inside of windows. Once they’re stretched with a hair dryer, you can’t even see them. If you have a space heater, be careful with it. They need to be placed well away from curtains and furniture. Add a few canned goods and frozen food items to your shopping list. Don’t forget extra food for your pet, if you have one, as well as bathroom tissue. That way when the weather is extremely cold, you won’t have to go out. Put new batteries in your smoke detector before you turn on the furnace for the year. Plan some regular outings with friends or sign up for a class, especially one involving indoor walking. “The Pretender” was one of Jackson Browne’s most popular hits, but this singer/songwriter is no pretender himself. He is an authentic music icon. • Believe it or not, Jackson Browne’s first name is Clyde (Jackson is his middle name). He was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on October 9, 1948, to American parents. His father worked for an American Army newspaper. The family later returned to Los Angeles, California. • Browne’s first publishing contract was with a small company named Nina Music. His compositions were immediately picked up by other performers, such as Joan Baez, Tom Rush, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, the Byrds and Steve Noonan. After moving to Greenwich Village, New York, Browne was briefly in Tim Buckley’s back-up band. In 1967, Browne was romantically linked to Nico of the classic rock band, Velvet Underground. • In 1971, Browne signed with David Geffin’s Asylum Records. His first self-named album, “Jackson Browne” (1972), included the pianodriven “Doctor My Eyes,” a hit song. “Rock Me on the Water” from the same album also gained considerable radio airplay, while “Jamaica Say You Will” and “Song for Adam” helped establish Browne’s growing reputation. • Browne’s songwriting ability was even more apparent in his album, “The Pretender.” It was released during 1976, after the death of his first wife, Phyllis Major. The album features a mixture of styles, ranging from the Mariachiinspired “Linda Paloma” to the country-driven “Your Bright Baby Blues” to the downbeat “Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate.” • Jackson Browne began recording “Running on Empty” in 1977. It was spectacularly successful and was fated to become his biggest commercial success. Unlike most live albums at the time, this one used all new material and combined live concert performances with recordings made on buses, in hotel rooms and even back stage. • “Running on Empty” contains many of Browne’s most popular songs to this day; songs like the title track, “The Road,” “Rosie” and “The LoadOut/Stay,” Browne’s send-off to his concert audiences and roadies. • In 2003, three of Browne’s albums — “For Everyman,” “Late for the Sky” and “The Pretender” — were selected by Rolling Stone magazine for its list of the 500 best albums of all time. • In 2004, Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Springsteen gave the induction speech, commenting to Browne that although the Eagles were inducted first, “You wrote the songs they wished they had written.” He also received in 2004 an honorary Doctorate of Music from Occidental College in Los Angeles for, “a remarkable musical career that has successfully combined an intensely personal artistry with a broader vision of social justice.” • Browne’s studio album “Time The Conqueror” was released September 23, 2008, on Inside Recordings. It was his first studio album with new songs in six years, all written by Browne, save three song co-written with several of his longtime band members. • “Time The Conqueror” reached the Billboard 200 album chart at No. 20; it was Browne’s first top-20 record since releasing “Lawyers in Love” in 1983. In addition, the album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Independent Album chart. • Since his debut in 1972, Browne has released 13 studio albums and five compilation greatest hits albums.

● On Oct. 24, 1775, a British naval fleet of six ships sails up the James River to destroy the town of Norfolk, Va. • Few people today know about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but during the Great Depression, it helped a lot of people earn money to support their families. It was a public work relief program for unemployed men, providing vocational training through the performance of work related to conservation and development of natural resources in the United States from 1933 to 1942. • As part of the New Deal legislation proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), the CCC was designed to aid relief of the unemployment resulting from the Great Depression while implementing a general natural (For 12 Months, Offer requires Agreement) resource conservation program on federal, state, county and municipal lands in every U.S. state. $500ÊBONUS! The enrollees were organized into work units called “sections” of 25 men each, according to the barracks they lived in. • Enthusiasm for the program reigned supreme. By January 1934, the second year of the CCC program, 300,000 men were enrolled. In July 1934, this cap was increased by 50,000 to include men from drought-affected states of the mid-west. The temporary camps had also transitioned from tents to wooden barracks. An education program was established emphasizing job training. • On June 28, 1937, the CCC was legally established, transferred from its original designation as the Emergency Conservation Work program. Funding was also extended for three more years, effective July 1, 1937. Are some rooms in your house cooler than others during the winter? Do your feet get particularly cold when you’re in a room located over a crawl space? Insulation can help. Experts say all open cavities of walls, floors and ceilings adjacent to living spaces should be insulated. Insulation not only reduces your utility bills by saving energy, but it also makes your house more comfortable by helping maintain an even temperature. It also increases the resale value of your home while reducing external noise by acting as a buffer. Additionally, properly installed insulation can reduce the growth of molds and mildew that can cause serious health problems. Insulation is manufactured from all different types of materials. Most common are fiberglass, polyester and wood, but there is also plastic from recycled milk cartons and straw. Each is regulated and rated by R-values. The higher the R-value, the better the insulating properties. Generally speaking, in the Midwest the roof should be insulated with R-values between R-40 and R-50, walls above grade between R-20 and R-30, and basement walls with R-10. In most homes, the highest heat loss occurs through the attic. Attic insulation should have a minimum value of R-40. Install a vapor barrier between the insulation and ceiling to restrict moisture. Several factors can determine how much insulation your home needs—the climate where you reside, the structure of your home and the type of furnace or air conditioning unit you use. You might consider getting an energy audit of your home to determine where the weak points are located. Some utility companies offer free audits. You can also check with your state energy office for insulation recommendations or go online at www.eren.doe.gov for all kinds of energy-efficient information. Keep your heating equipment serviced and maintained regularly for top performance. If you need new equipment, purchase an energy-efficient model. It may cost more upfront, but you’ll make up for that by paying less to the utility company. Weatherizing your home, sealing air leaks most often caused by shiftng and settling overtime, can also prevent heat loss during winter. Most often, these leaks occur where two different building materials meet. Some of the most common areas include: narrow spaces around roof flashing, vents and pipes where air can travel, cracks in bricks or foundation walls, and gaps where the foundation wall meets the siding and around door frames. Two 1/8" gaps can let in as much cold air as a window left open 6" all winter. Imagine how much money that would cost you. Inspect the exterior of your home carefully from different angles to spot cracks and gaps. Then use caulking or weather-stripping to seal them. Water heaters are the second-largest energy users in the home. Experts recommend insulating an older water heater or purchasing an energy-efficient model. Buying an energy-efficient water heater can be expensive, but in the long run, it will cost less to operate. Additionally, insulating hot water pipes with half-inch foam or pipe tape can save $25 annually.

Properly planned lighting can affect energy use as well. Compact fluorescent light bulbs last three to four times longer and are more efficient than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, yet give off the same light. Avoid the long-life incandescent variety—they are the biggest energy burners. Use task lighting where needed and turn off the general lighting when unnecessary. Above all, don’t leave lights burning when they’re not being used. Do your own energy audit this fall. Locate sources that leak cold air, keep your hot water heater and furnace tuned up, and use lighting wisely to keep those high utility bills at bay.
