TIDBITS CHATS YOU UP ON
CELL PHONES July is Cell Phone Courtesy Month, and time for Tidbits to delve into the history of this device, one that’s in the hands of 95% of Americans. • While standing on Sixth Avenue in New York City in April of 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper made the world’s first mobile phone call. The recipient of the call was his counterpart at AT&T, Motorola’s competitor and biggest company in the world. Cooper, who has become known as “the father of the cellphone,” was an inventor and general manager of Motorola’s Communications Systems Division. Cooper’s phone weighed 2 lbs. and required 10 hours to charge for a talk time of 30 minutes. • It took 10 years to bring the portable cell phone to market. In 1983, Motorola introduced its 1.1-lb. DynaTAC 8000X phone for consumer use with a hefty price tag of $3,995 (about $9,300 in today’s dollars). It took seven years to reach one million cell phone subscribers. • You may not recognize the name Scott Jones, but thanks to him, voicemail became available on mobile phones in 1986. Jones was a 26-year-old research scientist at MIT when he came up with the idea while enjoying a pizza with friends. Turn the page for more!

• The first text message was transmitted in December of 1992. A 22-year-old software programmer named Neil Papworth sent the message “Merry Christmas” to his friend. Because mobile phones did not yet have keyboards, Papworth sent the message from his personal computer. It would be another year before texts could be sent phone to phone. It’s estimated that about 350 billion text messages are sent each month.

• About 95% of Americans own some kind of cell phone, and 77% have smartphones. About half of American smartphone owners have had to cancel or shut off their service for a time due to the high cost of maintaining it. • The Nokia 1100 was launched in 2003 and was discontinued in 2009. During that time, more than 250 million devices were sold, making it the world’s best-selling electronics gadget in history. • Apple introduced its first iPhone to the public in 2007, with its touch screen interface and virtual keyboard, with sales of 1.4 million units that first year. By the end of 2014, more than 590 million iPhones had been sold. The iPhone accounts for more than 60% of Apple’s total revenue, more sales than everything else Microsoft offers combined. • When the iPhone 4 was introduced in 2012, Apple was experiencing sales of 340,000 phones per day. Within 14 weeks, more than 37 million phones had been sold. That’s 262 phones every minute, 4 phones per second. • Although the sales of iPhones have been astronomical, 88% of all mobile phones are not iPhones. Androids actually have a larger market share.

• The average person unlocks his or her smartphone about 110 times each day. What do we do with our mobile phones? While you might think the most common use is calling or texting, it’s actually checking the time! About 87 hours are spent each month by the average American browsing on a smartphone. A recent survey shows that users in the age group 18 to 29 report they do about 5 surveys a week on their phone. Nearly half of that study group admitted to using their phone to avoid interacting with people around them.

• The American Academy of Pediatrics says products containing DEET are “the most effective” repellents available and should be used when necessary to protect against insect and tick-borne disease. The AAP says use DEETbased repellents containing up to 30% DEET on children older than 2 months of age. • As reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, insect repellents containing DEET provide complete protection from bites for longer periods than other repellent products. According to the study, “Only products containing DEET are dependable for long-lasting protection after a single application. • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evaluates and registers all DEET-based products before they can be marketed in this county. The EPA has determined that the use of products containing DEET according to label direction, does not pose unreasonable risks of adverse effects to humans, regardless of the concentration (amount) of DEET. • A whole new group of phobias has developed since mobile phones have been introduced. Telephonobia is the fear of making or receiving phone calls, while nomophobia is the fear of being out of contact with others because of a lost phone, dead battery, or lack of signal. Frigensophobics fear that their cell phone will damage their brain. There’s even a name for that feeling you get when hear or feel your cell ringing when it really isn’t – ringxity or fauxcellarm.

• Cell phones are an expensive commodity, but what claims fame as the world’s most expensive? A British jeweler named Stuart Hughes has created the iPhone 4 Diamond Rose with a price tag of nearly $8.2 million. The cell features 500 individual diamonds adding up to 100 carats, a single 7.4-carat pink diamond on the home button, and the Apple logo is rose gold with 53 diamonds. • Cell phones certainly aren’t without their dangers. More than 60% of Americans admit they text while driving, an action that renders their reactions one-third slower than being under the influence of alcohol. Some users report insomnia, headaches, and confusion, supposedly from mobile phone radiation. In 2015, more people died while taking selfies than by shark attacks. Most deaths are the result of falls, although many have been killed by moving vehicles while snapping photos. In Yellowstone Park, at least five tourists were gored by bison while attempting to take pictures with the animals. Cell users have reported nearly losing a hand while posing with a rattlesnake, and others have died while snapping a selfie holding a loaded gun. • How convenient! Residents of Malaysia can legally divorce a spouse via text message!

Unusual Plants:
SUNDEWS
This week, Tidbits turns its attention to one of the largest varieties of carnivorous plants, the sundew. • There are nearly 200 species of sundews, commonly known as Drosera, with the highest concentration found in Australia, home to almost half of the varieties. South America and Africa each have 20+ species, with Europe, Asia, and North America accounting for a few. The plant especially likes bogs, swamps, and marshes. North America’s four species are mainly found along the east coast, the Gulf Coast, and the Florida panhandle. • The flowers of the sundew are lovely rosettes that attract pollinators. The size varies between a tiny 0.4 inch and 39 inches. The climbing species can reach a height of nearly 10 feet. • The leaves of the sundew plant are covered with spiky tentacles, with the tip of each containing a nectar gland that secretes a sticky, sugary digestive enzyme. The name of the plant comes from the shiny drops of the gummy substance that resembles a drop of morning dew. Insects landing on the leaf get stuck in the “dew,” and as they struggle to free themselves, the tentacles wrap around the bugs, eventually suffocating them, about a 15-minute process. Each gland performs three functions – it attracts the insect, ensnares it, and then provides the enzymes necessary for the digestion process, absorbing the nutrients necessary for survival. • Even the miniscule legs of a small gnat are enough to set the trigger hairs of the tentacle into motion.
• Because sundews can obtain extra nutrients from insects, they can survive in poor soil where other plants can’t. If adequate insects aren’t available, the sundew can obtain some nutrition from the soil, enough to survive for long periods of time. Certain varieties are able to live 50 years. • Although the insect-catching process is similar to that of the Venus Flytrap, the sundew’s mechanism is more complex, because its leaf can bend in nearly any direction depending on the size and shape of the bug. After it is finished with its meal, the leaf returns to its original size and shape. • Since sundews are a beautiful plant, some folks like to cultivate them as ornamental plants. This can prove difficult in many ways, first and foremost, in the problem of even obtaining them. Many gardeners feed them with fish food pellets, live insects when possible, and bloodworms. If the plant doesn’t have sufficient light, it will fail to produce its characteristic dew. Most species require absolutely pure water, free of nutrients, salts, or minerals, as these substances can stunt their growth or kill them. It’s recommended that growers use only distilled water or rain water. • Since the 12th century, some European sundews have been used as a medicinal plant, said to cure coughs and respiratory ailments. Many modern-day naturopaths and herbalists advocate sundew tea for bronchitis, whopping cough, lung infections, stomach ulcers, and asthma, and have shown effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory. Sundews are an ingredient in more than 200 registered medications today.

• It was American journalist and political satirist P.J. O'Rourke who made the following sage observation: "No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power." • If you're like many Americans, you celebrate the Fourth of July by cooking out. In fact, it's estimated that in the United States, 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on that single day. • Those who study such things say that the milk from a mother hippopotamus is pink. • The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men from 13 colonies, but only one of them -- John Hancock -- actually signed it on July 4, 1776. Only two signers went on to become president of the United States: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. In a striking coincidence, both men died on the same day, July 4, 1826 Ð exactly 50 years after the adoption of the Declaration. Jefferson died first, at 12:50 p.m., at Monticello, his home in Virginia. At 6:20 that evening, at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, John Adams died. Unaware of Jefferson's death earlier that day, Adams acknowledged his longtime friend and rival with his final words: "Thomas Jefferson survives." • It was once believed that people with the bacterial infection cholera were suffering the wrath of God for their sins. In fact, the disease's name comes from the Spanish word for anger. • The typical horse walks at a speed of 3½ miles per hour. *** Thought for the Day: "We all have our time machines. TIDBITS® BEATING by Janet Spencer
HEART ATTACK FACTS • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. TIDBITS® BEATING by Janet Spencer
On September 11, 1952, the first artificial aortic valve was installed in a patient in Washington, D.C. Come along with Tidbits as we take a look at the human heart!
• On July 18, 64 A.D., the great fire of Rome breaks out and destroys much of the city. Despite the well-known stories, there is no evidence that the Roman emperor, Nero, played the fiddle while Rome burned. The fiddle did not even exist at the time, and Nero was 35 miles away when the fire broke out. • On July 21, 365 A.D., a powerful earthquake causes a tsunami that devastates the city of Alexandria, Egypt. The tsunami wave carried ships over the sea walls, landing many on top of buildings. Some 5,000 people lost their lives. • On July 23, 1918, Della Sorenson kills the first of her seven victims in rural Nebraska. Over the next seven years, friends, relatives and acquaintances died under mysterious circumstances. Sorenson was arrested and confessed, saying, "I like to attend funerals. I'm happy when someone is dying." • On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opens on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 14 million visitors a year. • On July 20, 1973, actor and martial-arts expert Bruce Lee dies in Los Angeles at age 32 from a brain edema, possibly caused by a reaction to a prescription painkiller. Growing up, Lee was a child actor who appeared in 20 Chinese films. • On July 19, 1989, 21-year-old actress Rebecca Shaeffer is murdered at her Los Angeles home by Robert John Bardo, a mentally unstable man who had been stalking her. Schaeffer's death helped lead to the passage in California of legislation aimed at preventing stalking. • On July 22, 2003, Army Pvt. Jessica Lynch, a prisoner of war who was rescued from an Iraqi hospital, receives a hero's welcome when she returns to the U.S. Critics -- and Lynch herself -- later charged the U.S. government with embellishing her story to promote the Iraq war.

You Be the Judge When Patrick Ewing was traded by the Knicks in a four-team, 12-player deal in the year 2000, Michael Jordan shook his head in disdain. "You shouldn't treat your legends like that," Jordan said, referring to Ewing's Hall of Fame run in New York. Jordan surmised that the franchise would suffer from the trade in both the short and long run. (He was right -- the Knicks haven't done a thing since.) Things work a little differently in the Bronx. Alex Rodriguez, a 14-time All-Star and three-time MVP, the fourth greatest home-run hitter in history (just four homers shy of 700), was unceremoniously dumped by the Yankees last August after 12 years in pinstripes. There were no fireworks, no Yankee greats lining up on the infield in blazers handing him gifts and wreaths ... no, the Yankees said he would be hired as an advisor and they'd pay him $27,103,825 to that end. The Yankees didn't waste any time filling the gap. After trading away Aroldis Chapman and Carlos Beltran, and with Mark Texeira announcing his retirement, the Bombers called up first baseman Tyler Austin and right fielder Aaron Judge from Triple-A Scranton/ Wilkes Barre. They were told that they were not there to sit -- they were there to play. They didn't disappoint. Batting 7th and 8th in the lineup, both Austin and Judge homered in their first major-league at-bats, the first time that has ever happened. And while Austin slipped back down to the minors, Judge won the starting job in right field and won over New York with his bat and demeanor. At 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds, he is the largest baseball player in terms of body mass ever to play the
game. He wears a size 17 shoe. It would seem that his size would be a liability; after all, big body equals big strike zone. While strikeouts were a problem for Judge in the minors, he has buckled down in the majors and has put up historic numbers. He is the first rookie to hit 13 homers in the first 26 games of a season. The only other player to match that number was Willie Mays in his non-rookie year of 1964. He holds the record for exit velocity -- the speed at which a baseball leaves a bat -and has hit Ruthian blasts to all fields in every field he's played; his homers average 406 feet, including a 497-foot MOAB he hit in Pittsburgh. As of this writing, Judge is hitting .330 with an on-base percentage of .440 and slugging percentage of .693, with 26 home runs. Only three other rookies finished a season with slash lines better than .300/.400/.600: George Watkins, Ted Williams and Albert Pujols. Judge is on pace to hit 57 home runs, which would eclipse Mark McGwire's record of 49, set in 1986. And much to the chagrin of Yankee haters the world over, Judge's approach to the game and his overall humble demeanor has drawn comparisons to St. Derek Jeter himself. Even if Judge were to suffer a massive slump in the second half, his stats still eclipse the rookie efforts of guys like Bonds, Mantle and even Ruth. Is he the next great Yankee legend? Aaron's bat will be the final arbiter and judge, and we have been called to witness. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

• If the clinking and clacking your dog’s tags are driving you crazy, wrap one of them in clear packing tape. Cut off excess and the tags can hit each other all night without making a sound. • “You can keep salad dressing from coming out so fast if you use a knife tip to poke several holes along one side of the foil safety covering on a bottle of dressing. This works for oil and vinegar based ones, but not as well for creamy ones. For those, just remove half of the foil by cutting it with the knife tip. It’s much better to control the flow!” — M.R. in Idaho • “I use baking soda to scour my kitchen sink. Then I rinse it down with a little vinegar. This allows the air to circulate all around the potato, therefore ensuring even cooking! Plus, it looks cute. • Using an online recipe? Visit the community of Sherwood, Oregon on July 14 and 15, and you can take part in Robin Hood Days, a tribute to the legendary English outlaw, featuring archery and sword fighting tournaments, along with concerts by a medieval orchestra. Is this folk hero fact or fiction? Tidbits lets you decide! • Robin Hood is renowned for his practice of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. According to legend, he was a supporter of the late12th-century king Richard the Lionheart (King Richard I), who left England to fight in the Crusades. During Richard’s absence, his unpopular brother John set himself up as ruler, creating political turmoil, an action that drove Robin Hood to rebel against the oppressive establishment. • The first reference to Robin is in a 1377 poem. Ballads of the 1400s tell of his exceptional archery skills and his bitter hostility toward the Sheriff of Nottingham. These narratives included his associates Little John, Much the Miller’s Son, and Will Scarlet, but not Friar Tuck or his love interest Maid Marian. A 1427 play included the role of Robin Hood. Poet Alexander Barclay was the first to mention Robin and Marian together, around 1514. • During the 1400s, the English began celebrating May Day with plays and games centered around a Robin Hood character and members of his band. May Day festivities of the 16th century introduced Maid Marian as the Queen of May. • What was Robin Hood’s social status? Some tales depict him as a yeoman, a term that meant “neither a knight nor a peasant…but something in between.” Writings in the late 1500s presented him as a wealthy aristocrat, the Earl of Huntingdon, Robert Fitzooth, who had a grave disagreement with King John and was forced to flee to the safe haven of Sherwood Forest. ...continued
