TIDBITS KNOWS ®

SOME LIKE IT HOT by Kathy Wolfe

What’s your definition of hot? This week, Tidbits turns up the temperature to investigate the various meanings of the word. • “Hot” is not all about temperature. A hot car can be either capable of very fast speeds or stolen. Law enforcement might engage in hot pursuit of the hot car. Someone in trouble is said to be in hot water. The newest musician on the scene might be described as one of the hottest young talents in the business. Gamblers at a table in a Las Vegas casino might say, “The dice are hot tonight,” meaning they are bringing unusually good luck. Hot also describes a bold and intense color, such as hot pink.

• Actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon teamed up with Marilyn Monroe in 1959 to star in a romantic comedy called Some Like It Hot. The plot featured Curtis and Lemmon as musicians who disguised themselves as women in order to escape Mafia gangsters whom the pair had witnessed committing a crime. The movie was set in 1929 in Chicago in the midst of Prohibition, around the time of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Although Monroe was a box office star, she was responsible for a multitude of difficulties in filming due to her addition to pills, resulting in a lack of concentration and inability to memorize her lines. One scene required 47 takes for her to get the simple line of “It’s me, Sugar” correct. Curtis and Lemmon made private wagers on how many takes would be needed until Marilyn got it right. The American Film Institute voted Some Like It Hot as the #1 comedy film on their list of “100 Years, 100 Laughs.” ...continued

• In 1912, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville developed a scale for measuring the hotness and spiciness of chile peppers. He called his method the Scoville Organoleptic Test and based the scale on the exact weight of dried pepper dissolved in in alcohol to extract the heat components, known as capsaicinoids. The world’s hottest pepper is the Carolina Reaper, which is a crossbreed between a ghost pepper and a red habanero, first bred in a South Carolina greenhouse. The average rating is 1,569,300 Scoville heat units, but the hottest individual pepper on record was a smokin’ 2.2 million SHU. Compare this with an ordinary jalapeno pepper, which measures about 8,000 SHU. • Gold miners working 2.5 miles below the surface at South Africa’s Mponeng gold mine have a pretty hot work environment. Because rock temperatures in the mine can reach 150 degrees F, the walls are insulated with concrete and ice is pumped into the mine to make for safe working conditions. Mponeng Mine is the world’s deepest mine, and miners must take a one-hour trip from the surface to reach the bottom of the mine.

SOME LIKE IT HOT (continued):

• How hot must water be before it boils? While we usually think of water’s boiling point as 212 degrees F, that number is not a constant. That is the temperature for water at 1 atmosphere of pressure, or sea level, but as you gain altitude, water boils at a lower temperature. For those who live below sea level, atmospheric pressure is increased, and the boiling point is higher. Purity of the water can also affect how hot the water must be to boil. Salted water boils at a higher temperature than pure water.

• Playwright Tennessee Williams won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III, penned the story of a wealthy Southern family living on their Mississippi plantation. The plot chronicled the turbulent relationships of the Pollitts, whose cotton tycoon patriarch is slowly dying of cancer. The play was made into a film in 1958, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. • Those who engage in firewalking walk across a bed of hot coals. The ancient act dates back to 1200 B.C., and was a test of an individual’s strength, courage, or faith. How do they do it? According to physics, the amount of time that the foot is in contact with the coals, combined with the fact that embers are not good conductors of heat enable the deed. The laws of thermodynamics say that when two bodies of different temperatures meet, the hotter body will cool off, and the cooler body will heat up. In other words, the foot’s temperature tends to change less than that of the embers. It sounds strange, but it’s actually better to walk at a slower pace, because a person is more like to be burned by running because the feet are pushed deeper into coals, and the tops of the feet are burned.

Unusual Plants:

VIOLETS

There are nearly 600 species of violets found in dozens of countries across the globe, including North America, home to about 60 species. This week, Tidbits picks a bouquet of facts about these delicate little flowers. • The genus Viola includes the popular dog-tooth violets as well as delicate pansies. While many varieties have a sweet scent used in perfumes, lotions, and oils, others are completely odorless. • Violet flowers are edible and are often candied or crystallized for use in jellies or as decorations. A Sweet Violet blossom is preserved by coating it in egg white and dipping in crystallized sugar. A hot sugar syrup can also be poured over the fresh flower until the sugar dries and recrystallizes. The French manufacture a violet syrup from the flower’s extracts and use it to make marshmallows. • Not only are violets beautiful, they’re also nutritious. Petals and stems of violets are rich in the antioxidant Vitamin C, and in fact, contain more Vitamin C than most other vegetables. • The viola plant’s medicinal qualities have been studied in several human studies, and evidence indicates that it improves cough suppression in children suffering from asthma. Another study showed the extract’s oil to be effective in treating insomnia. The oil also has been proven beneficial as an ingredient in laxatives.

• Violets have been cultivated for centuries, clear back to ancient Greece in 500 BC. The Greeks regarded the violet as a symbol of fertility and love, using them in love potions. Violets were also used in their wines and food, as well as for medicinal purposes. A garland of violets worn on the head was said to help prevent headaches and vertigo. The flower was so popular that it became the symbol of Athens. • French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte loved violets so much that he adopted them as his “signature flower.” When his wife Josephine died in 1814, Napoleon covered her grave with violet blossoms. After he was exiled to Elba in 1814, he told friends that he would return before the violets bloomed, leading his followers to call him Corporal Violet. His supporters used violets to test loyalty. When people were asked if they liked violets and they responded, “Eh, bien,” their loyalty to Napoleon was proven. • The common blue violet is also a favorite of the people in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Illinois, and New Jersey, states that have all declared it their official state flower. • African violets, the world’s most popular houseplant, aren’t really violets at all. They belong to the same family as the primrose, and are native to Tanzania’s tropical rainforests. The scientific name of African violets is Saintpaulia, named after Baron Walter von Saint Paul, the man who discovered the plant in 1892. While real violets prefer shady and cool areas, African violets do best in bright sunlight and should be placed in a sunny window. They also grow best in a humid environment, and should have a humidifier or bowl of water nearby to boost humidity. The leaves are covered with tiny hairs, which help the plant absorb water from the air. African violets are a great houseplant for pet owners, because they are completely non-toxic.

By the time he was 30, his empire stretched from Greece to present-day India. One of the things that made his army different is that he required his soldiers to be clean-shaven. He felt that during battle, beards made a convenient handhold and could be grabbed by their enemies. • You might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Of course, there are venomous snakes. What's the difference, you may ask. Well, something that is poisonous has detrimental effects when you ingest it -- for example, poisonous mushrooms. As a general rule, eating snake meat won't hurt you. Because snakes inject the toxin into your bloodstream, they're venomous. *** Thought for the Day: "A writer -- and I believe, generally all persons -- must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. Carve one letter into each pumpkin. Set them up with candles and line them up in front of your house. Then, you can light them and make a fun message. Also, you could use Halloween-themed words, like ‘Boo’ and ‘Spooky,’ etc.” — V.S. in Wisconsin • Here are two tailgating tips: Designate a cooler just for kids with appropriate beverages and small snacks. Also, use colored chalk to create a “don’t pass” line around the grill area. • To eat a healthier meal, start by filling half your plate with veggies. Limit starches to a quarter of your plate and protein sources to the other quarter. Begin and end with a glass of water. That’s a great start! • If you haven’t already, find out if your routine utility services and banking have electronic statements. You can save yourself the trouble of filing and storing all that paper, which you likely won’t need. Electronic statements can be saved on a portable drive, accessed anytime and printed out only when necessary. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

HEIMLICH MANEUVER

Because it’s National Heimlich Heroes Week, Tidbits is focusing on the life-saving technique, the Heimlich maneuver, along with its creator. • Henry Heimlich, an American thoracic surgeon and medical researcher, graduated from Cornell University, and received his M.D. in 1943. Before he created his famous maneuver designed to save people from choking, he invented the chest drainage flutter valve, now called the Heimlich valve. This device allows and air and blood to drain from the chest cavity, while preventing air from traveling back, used to treat patients with emergency chest wounds or with a collapsed lung that needs to re-expand. Although we hear mostly about the Heimlich maneuver, the chest valve has saved more lives. • Heimlich first described his method of using abdominal thrusts for choking victims in a 1974 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He was compelled to create the maneuver after reading that of all accidental deaths, choking was the sixth leading cause. Up to that point, the accepted method of dislodging an object was to slap a choking victim on the back, although this had been shown to drive the object deeper into the chest. Within days of his publication in the journal, a Seattle restaurant owner was reported to have used the abdominal thrust procedure to rescue a choking victim. After a syndicated columnist associated with the medical industry wrote about the new maneuver in his column, the Journal began receiving a large volume of life-saving stories, and the technique became known as the Heimlich Maneuver. ...continued
