“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” These were the opening words to each episode of the original Star Trek series. This week, Tidbits heads into space to explore the particulars of this television program, which premiered in 1966. • Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, had been a writer for a 1960s series about the Old West, and visualized a Western in outer space, what he called “Wagon Train to the stars.” He was inspired by Horatio Hornblower novels about a skilled naval seaman, as well as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. The setting of the sci-fi adventure was the 23rd century, from 2266 to 2269.

• NBC executives rejected the first Star Trek pilot, but because they still liked the show’s concept, paid for a second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Captain Kirk was introduced, played by a 35-year-old Canadian actor named William Shatner, whose name would become synonymous with Star Trek. The second pilot also introduced Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and helmsman Sulu. • The name Sulu does not have Japanese origins, but was conceived from Roddenberry’s observation of the Sulu Sea on a map. This body of water touches the shores of all Asian countries. Sulu’s character, played by George Takei, (who appeared in 52 episodes) has no first name in the original series, but a 1981 Star Trek novel bestows the first name of Hikaru. • Leonard Nimoy appeared in more episodes than any other character. Playing the Vulcan Mr. Spock, he was cast in all 79 episodes and the original first pilot. Shatner only starred in the 79 regular episodes. • The character of Russian-born navigator Pavel Chekov was introduced in the series’ second season. Walter Koenig appeared in 36 episodes from 1967 to 1969. • Roddenberry used the series to convey statements about morality, sexism, racism, nationalism, violence, and global war. He began by hiring a racially diverse crew, and went on to give the show a strong anti-war message, implications about nuclear war, and other political and social issues. Star Trek gained notoriety as the first American TV show to feature an interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols. ...continued

(continued): • Due to Mr. Spock’s green Vulcan blood, Nimoy’s make-up had a faint greenish tinge to it, but because the formula was hand-mixed, the amount of green occasionally varied. Rodenberry’s original idea was for Spock’s skin to be red, which would have created many additional hours of make-up time for Nimoy. When an early screen test showed that red appeared as black on 1960s black-and-white TV’s, the notion was scrapped. • The first regular episode aired on September 8, 1966, (two days earlier in Canada), and the last aired on June 3, 1969. In the beginning, ratings were high, but had dropped to 52nd out of 94 by the end of the first season. NBC was ready to cancel the show partway through the second season, but an extraordinary letter-writing campaign was begun, petitioning NBC to keep it. Hundreds of thousands of letters were written to the network (including one from then-New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller) in an attempt to save the beloved sci-fi series. Picketers marched in front of NBC’s Burbank studios in support. But despite the valiant efforts, NBC cancelled Star Trek after the third season. • StarTrek’s original time slot was Thursday evening, but with the flagging ratings, NBC moved it from its primetime position to 10 PM on Friday night, known as “the Friday night death slot,” an hour undesirable for its younger audience, contributing to an even greater dip in ratings and its cancellation.

• On March 17, 1762, in New York City, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is held by Irish soldiers serving in the British army. • On March 16, 1802, the United States Military Academy -- the first military school in the United States, also known as West Point -- is founded by Congress. West Point was the site of a Revolutionary-era fort that Patriot General Benedict Arnold agreed to surrender to the British in exchange for 6,000 pounds. However, the plot was uncovered and Arnold fled to the British for protection. • On March 12, 1903, the New York Highlanders join baseball's American League, changing its name to the New York Yankees in 1913. • On March 18, 1942, the War Relocation Authority is created to "Take all people of Japanese descent into custody," as well as some Germans and Italians, and put them in internment camps. One Japanese American, Gordon Hirabayashi, fought internment all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled against him. • On March 14, 1950, the FBI institutes the "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives. Only eight women have appeared on the Most Wanted list. • On March 13, 1965, Eric Clapton leaves the Yardbirds. The English guitarist, singer and songwriter was enough of a purist to quit when the band drifted from the blues toward experimental pop with its 1965 hit "For Your Love." • On March 15, 1970, Boston Bruin Bobby Orr becomes the first defenseman in NHL history to score 100 points in a season. Orr was a young phenomenon, signed by the Boston Bruins to a "C" form at the age of 12. His contract included $900 worth of stucco for his family's home and a secondhand car.

(continued): • The first Star Trek convention was held in January of 1972 in New York City. A few hundred fans were anticipated, but several thousand enthusiasts showed up. Four years later there were upwards of 250 Star Trek clubs with 25 organized conventions that hosted thousands of Trekkies. A 1975 Chicago convention marked the first time that the entire cast reunited, an event attended by more than 16,000 fans. • Having achieved fame as Captain Kirk, after the cancellation of the series in 1969, William Shatner went through tough times finding work during the early 1970s. With no new roles coming his way and very little money, the actor lost his home and lived in a camper on the back of a truck until a few minor roles came his way, which blossomed into higher-paying ones.

• Although a popular catchphrase of the series is “Beam me up, Scotty,” in actuality, Captain Kirk never said that phrase to his Lieutenant Commander in any episode. However, other quotes are close – “Scotty, beam us up, “ “Beam me up,” “Scotty, beam me up,” and “Beam them out of there, Scotty.” • Although a specific city was never mentioned during the series, it was established that Captain Kirk was born in the state of Iowa. A member of the Riverside, Iowa, City Council brought forth a motion that the community should proclaim itself the future birthplace of James T. Kirk. The council wrote to Gene Roddenberry in 1985 seeking permission for the honor, and Roddenberry agreed. Many Star Trek-related attractions and events can be found there and the community hosts an annual Trek Festival every June. Trekkies can view a replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise there, although the ship has been dubbed the U.S.S. Riverside.

This week, Tidbits directs its attention to this fishy delicacy! • The word “caviar” has its origins in the Persian word khavyar, meaning “egg.” And indeed, caviar is eggs, those of one of 26 species of the sturgeon. Russian fishermen were already in the business of catching sturgeon in the 12th century, having recognized them as the most valuable. In the 15th century, caviar was served in the royal courts of Europe and the imperial court of Russia. During the Middle Ages, many countries had laws requiring the best caviar to be reserved only for royalty. • The finest caviar comes from the Caspian Sea, a body of water bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Three varieties of sturgeon are the source of the best caviar, the Beluga, the Sevruga, and the Osetra. Beluga has the largest eggs, from a fish that may weigh up to 2,000 lbs., although the typical Beluga is around 400 lbs. The female doesn’t bear eggs until she is about 25 years old, and her lifespan can be up to 150 years. The smaller Sevruga sturgeon usually weigh in at less than 50 lbs. Not all caviar resembles shiny black pearls. The Osetra produces a rare golden caviar. Premium caviar is from older, larger eggs, and lighter in color. Lower quality is darker and has a milder, less fishy flavor. Caviar can only be called that if it comes from a sturgeon. All other salted fish eggs, such as those from salmon, trout, or paddlefish, are referred to as roe. • Caviar’s taste is affected by its environment, including the salinity of the water where the sturgeon swims to the type of algae eaten by the fish.

• The first American caviar business was founded by 1873 by Henry Schacht, who used sturgeon from the Delaware River. The delicacy became so popular that U.S. saloons served it free, since its saltiness promoted more drinking. But by 1910, American waters had been nearly depleted of sturgeon due to over-fishing, and production ceased, with caviar becoming a luxury. • Because all wild sturgeon is on the endangered list, it is illegal to catch them in the wild. Nearly all of caviar available in the U.S. today is farm-raised. • In centuries past, the fish had to be killed to harvest the eggs, but a leading marine biologist has developed a system whereby the eggs are gently massaged from the female sturgeon, causing no harm to the fish. The eggs are then passed through a fine mesh to remove membranes and fatty tissue. • Caviar is never to be served with silver utensils, as metal spoons give the eggs a nasty metallic flavor. Serving spoons should always be made of mother of pearl, glass, or bone. • Those folks who make caviar are known as Ikrjanschik. The process is so specialized that a 10 to 15 year apprenticeship is required. Another unusual word, malossol, applies to caviar that has very little salt. • TThe world’s most expensive caviar comes from the eggs of a rare albino Iranian beluga, 60 to 100 years old. The Russians gave it the name Almas, which means “diamond” in Russian. While most caviar is black, Almas is a rare white type, and is packaged in a round, 24-karat gold box at a price of more than $25,000 for a 2.2-lb. box. • Caviar isn’t just a flavorful appetizer. It has more minerals and nutrients than any other protein. Just one spoonful supplies the daily requirement of Vitamin B12. It’s also rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, Omega-3’s, Vitamins B2 and D, and selenium.

Who Really Controls Your Smart Devices? Nowadays there are smart devices for the home that can be operated by your phone or even your voice. As convenient as they sound, there's a big problem: These devices can be controlled by others. And at this stage in our lives, this is the last thing we need. Smart devices can control things like your frontdoor lock, central air conditioning and refrigerator/ freezer, all hooked up to your Wi-Fi. But imagine what would happen in the middle of summer if a hacker turned off your A/C. Or a hacker instructed your front door to unlock -- no breaking in required. Some smart speakers that respond to questions have been found to record every word spoken in your house and store it away. Smart TVs are everywhere now, and they are huge data collectors. The information on the package makes it sound so convenient to stream movies, but think about what they learn, sitting in our living rooms listening, hooked up to other devices.

The problems start when you try to set up your new television. You need to be an attorney to understand all the fine-print legalese you must agree to -- which allows them to collect data on you. If you decline, there's one TV brand that punishes you by turning off all the set's smart features. What if you already have a smart TV and find all of this snooping annoying? Put it all back to factory settings. Then, when you set it up again, say no to all of it. If you're buying a new TV and want to avoid the high-tech data collection, consider a non-smart set. Read up on smart devices and appliances security. If you decide to reject smart devices, you won't be the only one. Š 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was Danish scholar and critic Georg Brandes who made the following sage observation: "Poor is the power of the lead that becomes bullets compared to the power of the hot metal that becomes types." • You doubtless know who Thomas Edison was -- the American inventor of such things as the light bulb, the phonograph and the motion-picture camera. You never learned that he was blind, though, did you? Of course you didn't -- he wasn't blind. However, even though he could see, historians say that when he was reading, he preferred Braille to printed text. • Have you ever heard of a lipogram? It's a work of writing that deliberately leaves out one or more letters of the alphabet. For instance, in 1939 a man named Ernest Vincent Wright published a 50,000-word novel titled "Gadsby," in which the letter e was not used once -- the longest lipogram in English. • Those who study such things say that the trunk of an African elephant has more than 60,000 muscles. • You might be surprised to learn that the White House had a telephone installed before indoor plumbing was. • I have some bad news for lovers of the snooze button: Experts say that you're better off not using it. Researchers have found that the last few minutes of sleep are more beneficial if they're uninterrupted, so it's better to go ahead and set your alarm for 10 minutes later to begin with. • A study of prison inmates' medical files revealed this interesting tidbit: The higher the levels of testosterone in a male inmate, the younger that inmate was when he was first arrested. *** Thought for the Day: "I learned compassion from being discriminated against. Check the bottom of the dishwasher for stuck food pieces and remove them if present, then add two cups of white vinegar to unit and run. When that cycle’s done, quick-scrub any gunky spots on the inside with baking soda, and then add a cup to the bottom; re-run dishwasher once more. • Is your place a mess? (Just make sure it’s clean, or you’ll end up with MORE dirt!) And while we’re on the subject of brooms, clean yours regularly with soap and water, and trim off stray or fraying bristles to ensure a clean sweep. • Too-tight flats? Put on a thick pair of socks and grab your hair dryer. Run the hot air over the tight spots while wearing the socks and shoes. Keep them on until they’re cool and remove the socks. HEART ATTACK FACTS • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. • Prior to his career in the entertainment industry, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was an employee of the LAPD’s Public Relations Department. It was here that he met a police officer named Wilbur Clingan. Years later, in a 1967 episode of Star Trek, the extraterrestrial warriors named the Klingons were introduced, named after Roddenberry’s former co-worker. • The character of Mr. Spock as we know him was nearly ditched early on. Network executives were nervous that his pointed ears and eyebrows were somewhat Satanic-looking, which could be offensive to some viewers. Roddenberry was frequently told to “drop the Martian,” and Spock’s ears and eyebrows were airbrushed out by the art department in publicity photos sent to network affiliates. But Roddenberry prevailed and Spock became the show’s most popular character. • The set designers for Star Trek drew inspiration from many of the futuristic designs of buildings and pavilions at the 1964 New York City World’s Fair. • The hand gesture known as the Vulcan salute features the palm forward, thumb extended, and a space between the middle and ring fingers. In 1968, the New York Times described the greeting as a “double-fingered version of Churchill’s victory sign. The salute was created by Leonard Nimoy based on the Priestly Blessing performed by Jewish orthodox priests, using both hands to represent the Hebrew letter Shin, which stands for El Shaddai, or “Almighty God.” The salute was first used in 1967 in the opening episode of season two. ...continued
