DISNEY WORLD (cont'd)
• Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, before construction began. His brother Roy Disney took over the project. The Magic Kingdom opened for business in 1971. That was followed by Epcot Center in 1982, Disney's Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Disney's Animal Kingdom in 1998. Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million. • Roy Disney died at age 78 in 1971, less than three months after the property opened.
AMAZING CONSTRUCTION
• There’s a system of tunnels underneath the Magic Kingdom called Utilidors (for “utility corridors”) where all the secret and unsightly stuff happens: supplies brought in, trash taken out, props are stored, costumes are cleaned, etc. Although the Utilidor appears to be underground, that’s an illusion. The land was too swampy to build underground, so it’s actually the first floor of the compound, and the entire resort is built on top. When visitors are standing in front of Cinderella Castle, they may feel like they are standing at ground level, but they are actually on the 3rd floor of a gigantic building. • The daily fireworks display at the Magic Kingdom costs about $33,000 to put on, making Disney the largest consumer of fireworks in the world. • When you take a walk down Main Street and look at Cinderella’s castle, you might notice that the “bricks” get smaller the higher up the castle goes. It’s called “forced perspective.” The castle looks a little taller than it would if all the bricks were the same size. • Main Street in the Magical Kingdom is designed using forced perspective. When guest arrive in the morning, Main Street looks extremely long as it stretches towards Cinderella’s Castle. Once guests reach the castle and turn around to leave the park, Main Street looks very short as it heads towards the exit. ...continued
WEST NILE VIRUS HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN GRAND FORKS West Nile virus (WNV) is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito most common for transmitting this virus is one that is widespread throughout the Grand Forks region. This mosquito does not discriminate. People of all ages are susceptible to WNV infection, but the elderly are at higher risk for developing the more severe form of this disease (neuroinvasive illness). Children infected with WNV generally show no symptoms or may have a mild fever.
WEST NILE VIRUS WARNING
Risk factors for West Nile virus: • Time of year – The majority of WNV cases occur from July – September. • Geographic region – The Dakotas have reported some of the highest cases per capita in the United States. • Time spent outdoors not wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellent – If you work or spend a lot of time outdoors (golfing, gardening, hunting, etc.), you’re at a higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. • Proximity – If you live in an area where WNV has already been identified or near mosquito larval habitat. • If you have a weakened immune system. The best way to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites. • Use mosquito-repellant products containing DEET. • Wear long sleeves and pants. • Eliminate any standing water from your property, such as trash bins, plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, etc. The mosquito most common for transmitting this disease generally stays close to the site it hatched from. Don’t let it be a container or rain gutter from your own property.
If you have any questions or concerns relating to mosquito control visit our website at www.gfmosquito.com PLEASE TELL OUR ADVERTISERS YOU SAW THEIR AD IN TIDBITS!
NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE
Legend has it that Walt sat in Disneyland and counted how far guests would walk before tossing their trash on the ground, and 30 steps seemed to be the limit. In any of the parks, visitors are never more than 30 steps from a trash can.

• The colored concrete walkways in the Magic Kingdom seem to correspond to each section but are actually colored because Kodak and Disney found that light reflecting off colored concrete creates more vivid photographs. • The brownish winding path in Liberty Square is meant to represent raw sewage that flowed down the streets of Colonial America, since indoor plumbing wasn't yet invented. • Throughout the resort there are thousands of “hidden Mickeys” worked into the designs: upholstery, artwork, wallpaper, flowerbeds, tile, and so on have subtle silhouettes of Mickey hidden in them. There's one hidden Mickey you can only see once a year: Inside the Little Mermaid ride at Fantasyland, workers drilled three holes in the ceiling that become the perfect Mickey at noon on November 18, which is Mickey's birthday. If you're at that spot, the sun will shine through those holes and create a three-circle Mickey image on the wall. There is a streetlamp in Tomorrowland with three round hooded lights. At a certain times of the day it will cast a Mickey shadow on the ground. • The Disney Transportation System is the third largest bus system in Florida with over 290 buses.
DETAILS OF DISNEY
• The water on the Jungle Cruise is dyed green in order to make it appear much deeper than it actually is. It also disguises the tracks that the boats travel on, as well as hiding trash. • The telegraph message at the train station is tapping out Walt Disney's speech at Disneyland's opening in Morse code. • When in queue for Pirates of the Caribbean, note that the two skeletons playing chess have died playing because the chess game is at a stalemate that nobody can win. ...continued

• It was French author, philosopher and journalist Albert Camus who made the following sage observation: "Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal." • Famously flamboyant country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton once entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest -- and she lost. • If you're a sailor you're probably familiar with the hazards of being out on the water: high seas, storms, hidden reefs. You probably wouldn't count whales among the dangers, but you'd be wrong. In 2010, on a day sail out of Table Bay Harbor in South Africa, a couple on a 30-foot sailboat were whale-watching when one got too close for comfort. A 40-ton whale they had been viewing breached right next to the boat and landed on the deck, breaking off the mast and then thrashing around before sliding back into the water. The whale lost some skin and blubber, but was otherwise unharmed; the couple were lucky to still have a seaworthy craft and made it safely back to the harbor. • Married women aren't likely to be surprised by the following tidbit of information: Studies show that women with husbands typically do 30 percent more housework than single women do. • If you're heading to the state of Washington with mischief on your mind, you'll need to keep in mind this state law: "A motorist with criminal intentions [must] stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he [or she] is entering the town." I bet that one has been really effective in stopping crime. • It's been reported that singer Sting doesn't use deodorant. In fact, after interviewing him for a concert once, the journalists nicknamed him "Stink." *** Thought for the Day: "It's far better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone." -Marilyn Monroe © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

• “Restore the shine on dull buttons by painting them with a coat of clear nail polish. I’ve renewed the buttons on my cardigan several times this way. I think it also strengthens the threads holding the buttons on.” — R.H. in Maine • “Turn a regular bra into a racerback strap with a simple paperclip. Just tuck both arm straps into the paperclip and adjust the point on your back where they come together. This has saved me when I had a nice tank top under a light jacket but then wanted to remove the jacket without my straps showing.” — A.J. in California • A paintbrush makes it really easy to clean out the crevices in your car. You can tape it to a ruler to get a longer reach and use it between the chairs and the center console, where there are a lot of crumbs but it’s hard to reach. • “I found an all-plastic mattress cover, meant to be a protection against spills or wetting the bed. I use it instead to protect my outside picnic table when the kids are doing messy crafts, like painting or working with glue or dyes. Because it’s a fitted sheet, it grips the table in any amount of wind, so it never flies up. I can hose it off to clean up, and when it’s dry I just store it until next time.” — M.W. in Minnesota • Thrift store pillowcases make an excellent dust cover for stored purses and bags. They can be trimmed to size, if necessary, and tied closed with a bit of string. • “For fun pancake shapes, use a turkey baster. Fill it with pancake batter, then spell or draw on a heated and oiled pan. Just make sure your letters are backward to start with; they look better when flipped!” — E.L. in Washington Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

RUBBER BANDS
• It annoyed William Spencer that every morning when he went to pick up the newspaper from his front porch, he’d find it had blown all over his yard in Alliance, Ohio. The windier it was, the farther the newspaper would fly. It was 1923 and Spencer decided something should be done. • Spencer knew that the shipyard of the Goodyear Rubber Company in Akron had heaps of discarded inner tubes lying around. He brought home a bunch of those inner tubes, and cut them into strips. The wrist-size stretchy strips of rubber were perfect for wrapping around a rolled-up newspaper, making it easier to throw onto a front porch and harder to blow away in the wind. • He took his idea to the Akron Beacon Journal, and the local newspaper bought a bunch of Spencer’s inner tube strips. The rubber band was born. Spencer started selling his rubber bands to office supply, paper goods, and twine stores across the region, building his business up. • He opened the world’s first rubber band factory in Alliance, Ohio, and then opened a second one in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1944. In 1957, he patented the Alliance rubber band, which ultimately set the world rubber band standard. • Today, Alliance Rubber is the number one rubber band manufacturer in the world, churning out more than 14 million pounds of rubber bands per year. Their annual output would stretch to the Moon and back ten times.

• The biggest consumer of rubber bands is the U.S. Postal Service which uses them to sort and group mail. Second place goes to the newspaper industry, followed by the floral industry and the food industry, which uses them to bunch things like asparagus and broccoli.
