Although you rarely think about your liver, this vital organ is constantly working to keep your body in good working order. Because October is National Liver Awareness Month, Tidbits is bringing you up to date on your liver’s functions and how to keep it healthy.
• The liver is a wedge-shaped organ, reddishbrown in color. It’s the largest glandular organ of the body, weighing around 3.3 lbs., the heaviest internal organ. The liver is about 6 inches wide. You can find your liver in the right upper quadrant of your abdominal cavity, to the right of your stomach, overlying your gall bladder. • It’s estimated that the liver performs around 500 functions in your body, with about 200 of those performing simultaneously. If it were to stop functioning for a single day, you would die!

• The liver is a storehouse for sugar, delivering it when the body needs it. The sugar is stored as glycogen, and the liver breaks this compound down to form glucose, which is used as fuel for the body’s energy. • One of the liver’s tasks is to convert sugar into fat. It’s the only organ that can actually break down sugar. Too much sugar makes too much fat, which can result in fatty liver disease. Sugarfilled soda in particular has been linked to this condition. • A healthy liver is always protecting the body, detecting and destroying harmful bacteria, germs, and viruses. The liver contains the body’s largest group of immune cells known as phagocytes that devour toxic particles. • If the liver’s ability to rid the body of toxins is damaged, those toxins build up and can affect sleep, mood, and behavior. Anxiety, muscle spasms, sluggish speech, lack of focus, and shakiness may result. • At any given time, there is about 1 pint of blood in your liver, about 13% of the body’s supply. • Bile is produced by the liver to aid in digestion, particularly fat. It’s a thick, greenish-yellow fluid made in the liver, but stored in the gall bladder. If you’ve eaten an especially fatty meal, the store of bile is used to break down the fats for digestion. • All kinds of toxins are prepared for removal by the liver, including drugs, such as penicillin, Tylenol, or Advil, but also alcohol, damaged cells, and old hormones. ...continued

THE HUMAN LIVER (continued):
Fall Leaf Disposal
• As red blood cells break down in the body, the liver helps get rid of the resulting waste product called bilirubin. A normal liver filters out the bilirubin, but when the liver isn’t functioning properly, bilirubin builds up in the body, creating jaundice, which turns the skin and the whites of the eyes yellow. Newborns frequently have jaundice because their livers aren’t quite developed, and sometimes have difficulties filtering out the bilirubin.
LEAF PICK-UP BEGINS OCTOBER 21st!
Disposal Options:
For immediate disposal haul your leaves to your nearest compost site through November 15th or Rake them loosely to your berm -NO BAGS. We will attempt to make 2 complete passes through town, weather permitting. DO NOT mix grass clippings, branches, brush & garden waste. Keep piles away from parked cars, fences & trees, & out of gutters.

• The liver also plays a role in helping your blood clot normally by secreting enzymes and chemicals necessary to form clots and stop bleeding. For those with mild liver disease, it takes a long time for bleeding to stop, but those with severe damage bleed easily and often, as tthe blood is unable to clot. In people with advanced cirrhosis, serious bleeding is the most common cause of death. • The liver is the only organ with the amazing ability to regenerate itself when part of it is damaged or removed. Donors can donate part of their liver and the remaining portion will grow back, and the donated part grows to fit the recipient’s body. As much as 75% of the liver can be removed without destroying it. Unlike other transplant procedures, a donor doesn’t even need to be related to someone to give up part of the liver. • What foods does your liver like? Foods that are high in fiber help your liver work at optimal levels. Vegetables also keep it healthy. Foods that are high in saturated fat can be detrimental to liver function, and continued consumption can lead to inflammation.

THE HUMAN LIVER (continued):
GAME TIME
• You can seriously damage your liver by taking too much medicine. Acetaminophen can be found in upwards of 600 medications, including Tylenol and cold and cough remedies. It’s alarming to think that an overdose of Tylenol can destroy half of a person’s liver cells in less than a week! Adults shouldn’t exceed a 4,000-milligram limit per day. • Cirrhosis of the liver is primarily is the result of excess alcohol intake, and is one of the Top Ten causes of death in the world. One in 5 heavy drinkers will get cirrhosis, a scarring of the liver that is irreversible. As the prolonged use of alcohol reduces the liver’s ability to regenerate new cells, the liver loses its ability to break down toxins. • Ten percent of the liver is made up of fat. If the fact content exceeds that 10%, the condition is known as fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, which contributes to Type 2 diabetes. Although heavy use of alcohol makes a person more likely to get it, you can get it if you don’t drink a lot. Contributors are obesity, high blood pressure, malnourishment, high levels of bad cholesterol, and excess belly fat.

• There are several different varieties of the liver infection hepatitis. Hepatitis A and E are the result of eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with the virus. Poor cleanliness during food preparation is a major cause. It usually takes about two months to recover. Hepatitis B, C, and D are spread through blood and bodily fluids. The B variety usually goes away after several months, but in some cases, it can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis C is one of the most common bloodborne viral infections in the U.S., with treatment usually lasting up to 16 weeks. More than 3 million Americans are living with HCV.

So much for early reviews. Since then, more than a billion Barbies have been sold in more than 150 countries. Mattel, the doll's maker, claims that more than 100 dolls are sold every minute of every day. • William Howard Taft, the 18th president of the United States, was quite a large man. • Geometric patterns painted on walls are hot right now, and they can add interest to a room for a small price tag. One place where you don’t want to skimp, though, is on your low-tack masking tape. Buy a good-quality painter’s tape that will give a really clean line. Take the time to press it down so that no paint bleeds underneath. Then, after painting, wait until paint is dry to the touch before removing. • One quick way to reduce a single-use plastic at the coffee shop: Skip the coffee stirrer. • Evidence of neckties dates back to 210 B.C. to Chinese emperor Shih Huang Ti. When his massive mausoleum was discovered in 1974, his tomb was filled with 7,500 life-size terracotta carvings of his army. The emperor, who had an extreme fear of death, ordered the figures placed in his tomb in order to have his officers, soldiers, archers, and horsemen close by in the next world. The details on each figure were intricate, right down to their armor, uniforms, hair, and facial expressions. Every single one of the figures had a carving of a silk cloth wrapped around their neck. • A marble sculpture from ancient Rome depicts 2,500 Roman soldiers wearing neckwear, shorter than modern-day ties, wound around the neck and tucked into their armor. • During the Thirty-Year war in central Europe during the 17th century, French King Louis XIII hired mercenary Croatian soldiers to add to his army. The soldiers all wore a piece of cloth tied around their neck as part of their uniforms. The King was impressed with the look, and soon all of his troops were wearing what he called La Cravate, or cravat. In fact, he made it a mandatory item for all those gathered in his court. Some were muslin, some silk, others lace, and were often embellished with embroidery.

NECKTIES (continued):
• Around 1900, cravats were worn by all men. Today, a cravat refers to a silk handkerchief worn around the neck. An ascot is a variation of the cravat that is pinned rather than tied. Bow ties were also a popular accessory. In the 1930s, neckties became wider with bolder patterns, and were shorter than the ties of today. During the 1950s, skinny ties were all the rage.
DIFFERENCES: 1. Tree is added. 2. Saw blade is shorter. 3. Bricks are missing. 4. Dress's neckline is different. 5. House is wider. 6. Man's hair is different. © 2019 King Features Synd., All rights reserved.

• During the 1960s and 1970s, ties were wide once again, about 4 to 5 in. wide, and known as the Kipper Tie. It was also the time of the introduction of the bolo tie, a cord or braided leather with decorative tips known as aiguillettes, and secured with an ornamental slide. The tie takes its name from the word “boleadora,” an Argentine lariat. The Brits call them bootlace ties. The governor of Arizona declared the bolo as the official necktie of that state in 1971, an action followed up by Texas and New Mexico. • Although once considered a mandatory item of men’s clothing, today, just 6% of men wear a tie to work every day. Casual Friday instituted by many industries resulted in a 10% slump in sales in 2002. The average man has 7 ties in his wardrobe, and less than 1% of American men know how to tie a bow tie. Yet about 80 million ties are sold a year in the U.S., with about $1 billion spent. • Today’s neckties are 3.5 to 3.75 in. wide and 52 to 58 in. long. A high-quality silk tie requires more than 100 silkworm cocoons, with 245,500 feet of silk thread needed for one tie. Shengzhou, China is the largest manufacturer of neckties in the world, with close to 500 companies in operation. • If you’re looking for an especially nice tie, try the Satya Paul Design Studio. They have designed a tie containing 150 grams of gold and 271 diamonds. Cost is right around $220,000.
