In a scene from the play “Macbeth” three witches stand around a cauldron, brewing a stew from eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog—“double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble.” Here’s the story of the play and the trouble it spawned, for Shakespeare’s pen did indeed brew up, in his own words, “a charm of powerful trouble!”

• King James was overjoyed with Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare and his company were given royal protection in a day and age when actors were considered scoundrels. They were given generous amounts of money. Shakespeare now had the security, popularity, respect, and money that he needed. As a result, he produced six new plays in the next five years. One of them was the accursed “Macbeth.” • In 1606, the King’s brother-in-law was due to visit. King James commissioned Shakespeare to write a play for the occasion. • James was fascinated by witchcraft. He even wrote a book about Demonology. With this in mind, Shakespeare sat down to write a play that took a serious look at the King’s favorite subject. • The play is about a Scottish general who learns from three witches that he will become King of Scotland. He murders several times to achieve his goal, feeling guilty at the same time, before being murdered himself. • The play is loosely based on a real-life Scottish ruler, Mac Bethad mac Findláich, who ruled in the mid-1000s. He took the throne after killing King Duncan in 1040 and five years later killed Duncan’s father. For the next 14 years, he ruled peacefully, but in 1057 Duncan’s son Malcolm killed him in battle and became king himself. In many ways the drama and intrigue of the real Macbeth mirrored the tragedies suffered by the parents of King James. • Some say that Shakespeare’s witchcraft spells were so faithfully reproduced that they created a curse surrounding the play that is renewed every time the words are uttered. Whatever the case, the play has been surrounded by 400 years of death. ...continued

• The curse manifested itself immediately. The young actor scheduled to play Lady Macbeth for King James came down with a fever right before the performance. Some accounts say that he died. Shakespeare himself had to step in at the last minute and play the role, as women were not allowed on stage. King James, who had a secret phobia concerning knives and gore, was horrified by the death scenes which were realistically portrayed. He immediately banned Macbeth for five years. • Shakespeare went on to write many happier plays; King James died of natural causes at an old age; but the curse of Macbeth lives on. • Skeptical? Here is just a sampling of the disasters of Macbeth: • After the ban ended, the play was performed at Shakespeare’s home ground, the Globe Theater. A few days afterwards, the theater burned to the ground and with it all of the company’s scenery, props, costumes, and manuscripts. • In Amsterdam in 1672, Dutch actor Jan de Hoffmeyr substituted a real dagger for the fake knife usually used in the scene where Duncan is murdered, and he died a bloody death in full view of the entire audience. Jan de Hoffmeyr subsequently spent the rest of his life in prison. • In the early 1900s, the Moscow Arts Company was doing a dress rehearsal when actor Stanislavski forgot his lines in the middle of the murder scene. He whispered for a prompt but the prompter was silent. He yelled for a prompt but the prompter was silent. He stamped his foot for the prompter but the prompter was silent. Investigating, he found the prompter slumped over the script, dead. The show never opened.

THE CURSE OF MACBETH (cont.)

• During a 1937 production at Old Vic Theater in England, the theater’s founder suddenly died of a heart attack just before the play opened. Laurence Olivier starring in the lead role missed death by seconds when a sandbag accidentally fell from the ceiling. The curse provided wonderful publicity, ensuring the success of the run. • In 1948 during a production in Connecticut, Diana Wynyard as Lady Macbeth announced she thought the curse was ridiculous, which is the worst possible way to tempt a curse. She decided it was silly to play her sleepwalking scene with her eyes open, and instead tried it with her eyes closed. She walked off the edge of the stage during the next performance and fell 15 feet. Battered and bruised, she continued the performance. • In a 1942 production starring John Gielgud, four people involved in the production died, including two of the Witches and the man playing Duncan. • Two days after the show opened at the Portuguese National Theatre, the theatre burned down and it took six years to rebuild.

*Answer located further back.

• A Russian version of the play scheduled to be filmed in Georgia was cancelled when nine members of the crew died of food poisoning on location. • During a 1971 production at the Mercer O’Casey Theatre, no less than seven burglaries and one fire marred the three-month run. • Abe Lincoln was quoting passages from the play concerning the assassination of Duncan to his friends the evening before he was shot.

• It was American political scientist, economist, psychologist and professor Herbert Simon who made the following sage observation: "What information consumes is rather obvious: It consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention, and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it." • Those who study such things claim that the act of licking a stamp burns one-tenth of a calorie. • The shortest song in the world is "You Suffer," recorded in 1986 by the British band Napalm Death. In addition to coming with the idea for the granola bar, he also created the squeezable ketchup bottle, the disposable diaper, heated pizza boxes and the dental floss dispenser. • There are more Polish people living in Chicago than in any city on Earth except for Warsaw, Poland's capital. • You might be surprised to learn that the most dangerous profession in the country -- in terms of the percentage of people holding that profession who have been killed -- isn't firefighter or police officer, it's president of the United States. A total of 9% of our presidents have been assassinated. • Renee Zellweger was born the same year that Judy Garland died: 1969. Zellweger played Garland in the movie "Judy," which debuted 50 years after her death, in 2019, the same year that Zellweger turned 50. • In the Commonwealth of Virginia, a statute contained within what's known as the Code of 1930 prohibits bribery or corruption by anyone other than a political candidate. *** Thought for the Day: "I think the biggest mistake most people make when they pick their first job is they don't worry enough about whether they'll love the work, and they worry more about whether it's good experience." -- Steve Ballmer

• Even though Warner Bros. executives were happy with John Huston's draft of the screenplay, they put restrictions on the production by allotting him only six weeks to shoot the film with a $300,000 budget. The production finished two days ahead of schedule and $54,000 under budget. • Mary Aster played the role as the femme fatale client, Ruth Wonderly. John Huston had Mary Astor run around the set several times before each of her scenes in order to give her a breathless, nervous appearance on screen.

• The film premiered in New York City on October 3, 1941 and was nominated for three Academy Awards. It quickly became one of the iconic films of the day. • The total cost of designing, casting, and painting all of the prop Maltese Falcon statues for the film was less than $700. Now those props are incredibly valuable and are each worth many times more than the film cost to make. One of the props was accidentally dropped by Bogart during filming, slightly damaging it. This one is on display in the movie museum at Warner Bros. studios, where one can see dents in the tail feathers. • The most expensive one sold for $4.1 million to Las Vegas hotel and casino billionaire Steve Wynn in 2013. It was one of the highest prices ever paid for a piece of movie memorabilia, and two of the others were for cars: the original Batmobile, which had sold for $4.6 million earlier that year, and the Aston Martin Sean Connery drives in “Goldfinger.” Today it sits, along with a pair of Picassos, a Matisse, and a Giacometti sculpture, in a meeting room in Wynn’s Las Vegas villa.

Answer

• It was the directorial debut of John Huston, son of famed actor Walter Huston. John had begun a successful career as a screenwriter for Warner Brothers, earning Oscar nominations for “Sergeant York” and “Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet.” When he asked Warner Brothers for a chance to direct, they agreed to let him do so if his next script was a hit. His next script was “High Sierra” starring Humphrey Bogart, and it was a smash hit when it was released in 1941. Warner Brothers let Huston pick the project he wanted to direct, and he picked “The Maltese Falcon” also starring Bogart. It was the first of five movies Huston and Bogart would make together.

• John Huston’s father, Walter Huston, made a cameo appearance in the film. He deliberately screwed up his part over and over again just to annoy his son.

Weekly SUDOKU

• Dashiell Hammett wrote a very popular story called “The Maltese Falcon” in 1930, which was made into several films. But the Warner Bros. version produced in 1941 starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston was the one that everyone remembers. The plot follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.

• Warner Bros. planned to change the name of the movie to “The Gent from Frisco” because the novel’s title had already been used for the 1931 film version, but Huston insisted the title remain unchanged. Early in the film, Bogart, in his role as Sam Spade, walks past a poster for the non-existent movie “The Girl from Albany” as an inside joke aimed towards Warner Bros. for the attempt to tamper with the title.

You can add a drop of perfume or essential oil for scent.” — R.K. in Indiana • “It feels like we have less and less time with our doctors, and mine feels that way, too. Before I head to my appointment, I make a list of my top three discussion items and copy it out again for the doctor. When he walks in, I hand him the list so we stay on topic.” — C.E. in Massachusetts • Use clean tin cans to make and decorate tiny cakes. They can be used just like a regular cake pan, just grease and dust with flour. Be sure to use only cans that are not lined with anything, because some cans are lined with BPA plastic! • “I have heard the tip to spray a thread end with hairspray to keep it stiff for threading, but I didn’t have any hairspray. I used a touch of hair gel, and it worked too.” — T. in Kentucky • “You can reuse the envelopes that come in junk mail and solicitations. I use them to keep coupons together for when I go to the store, and magazine clippings that I save for my daughter.” — M.W. in Alabama Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

• On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell's patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours. • On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. • On March 2, 1925, the first nationwide highway numbering system is instituted to minimize confusion. Later, interstate highway numbering would be improved by colored signs and the odd-even demarcation that distinguishes between north-south and east-west travel. • On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key had composed the lyrics as he witnessed the overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. • On March 4, 1966, Beatle John Lennon's controversial quote is printed in the London Evening Standard: "We're more popular than Jesus." After a reprint in the U.S., Bible belt radio DJs organized Beatles record burnings and protests, declaring Lennon's remarks blasphemous. Even the Vatican chimed in. Lennon eventually apologized. • On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter, airs for the first time. Carter answered calls from all over the country from his desk in the Oval Office. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the CBS radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. • On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens. • Dashiell Hammett was born in Maryland in 1884. He left school to help support his family but always remained an avid reader. A restless soul, he had trouble holding jobs until he went to work for the Pinkerton Detective Agency at the age of 21. This job appealed to him and he was quite good at it. One of his early cases involved finding a stolen Ferris wheel.

• Hammett left the Pinkerton Agency to become an ambulance driver during World War I. During his service in 1919 he contracted first the flu, then pneumonia, and then tuberculosis. His health was tenuous and he was not expected to live. It was at this time that he turned to writing because he was too weak to do anything else. He wrote anything he could get paid for: advertising copy, poetry, book reviews, short stories. His health slowly improved. However, due to his smoking, drinking, and womanizing, he was never very strong. His career as a writer spanned only a little more than a decade, with his first story appearing in print in 1923 and his final novel being published in 1934. • In his first crack at detective stories, he introduced a detective known only as Continental Op (because he worked for the Continental Detective Agency). In the three dozen stories he starred in – at a penny per word for Hammett - Op was short, fat, middle-aged, ordinary, and utterly believable. It was a far cry from the standard mystery of the day which invariably involved “the gentleman detective, the sinister butler, and the body in the library” according to writer Daniel Stashower in Smithsonian Magazine. Hammett wrote from his own Pinkerton experiences to create a detective that was completely convincing. Hammett’s first novel, “Red Harvest,” published in 1929, starred Continental Op. ...continued

• In 1929 Hammett invented a new detective, who was lean, tough, and shifty, with a chiseled jaw, a smart mouth, a trench coat, and a Dick Tracy hat. This was Sam Spade, Private Eye – a character who has since been lampooned often. Sam Spade, who “lied, cheated, and double-crossed his way to justice” made his first appearance in the novel “The Maltese Falcon.” Published in 1930, the novel was made into a movie three times over, in 1931, 1936, and 1941, propelling Hammett to the top of the Hollywood pile. It was John Huston’s 1941 version, starring Humphrey Bogart, that became a cult classic. • In 1934 Hammett came up with yet another detective: Nick Charles in “The Thin Man” which was his fifth and final novel. This book was adapted for radio, TV, and screen, starring Myrna Loy and William Powell. It spawned a series of popular films. His writing fees approached a million dollars and it poured out of his pocket as fast as it poured in. • In the mid-1930s, Hammett lost interest in writing, for unknown reasons. He turned to politics, and in the 1950s came under McCarthy’s scrutiny for alleged communistic leanings. He spent six months in jail in 1951 for his refusal to testify at a trial of four accused communists. In prison, he was a hero, as the inmates listened to the Sam Spade stories on the radio. • Dashiell was subsequently blacklisted; his income was attached by the IRS; his books were kept out of libraries by the State Department; and his writings fell out of favor. He spent the rest of his life earning his living by teaching creative writing in New York. He died, penniless, of lung cancer in 1961. • After his death, his stories surged in popularity and are now available in over 150 languages.
