It’s time to get your country on, as Tidbits rounds up the facts on the Grand Ole Opry. • Folks have been listening to the Grand Ole Opry for close to 95 years! The live radio show, America’s longest-running radio broadcast, aired for the first time in November of 1925. • The broadcast was originally called “The WSM Barn Dance,” and aired from a studio built by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company. The company chose the station’s call letters WSM as an acronym for their motto, “We Shield Millions.” The first artist to perform on the program was a fiddle player named Uncle Jimmy Thompson. • It wasn’t until December, 1927 that the name “Grand Ole Opry” was first used. The show was preceded each week by an hour of classical music and opera selections. On December 10, the program’s announcer, George D. Hay, declared, “For the past hour, we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on, we will present the ‘Grand Ole Opry’.” And the name was born!

• The showcase was an immediate success and before long, the hallways of the National Life building were jammed with more fans than the space could accommodate. The company built a new auditorium with a capacity of 500, which remained the broadcast’s home until 1934. • Once the fan base outgrew the seating capacity of the National Life building, the broadcast relocated to the Hillsboro Theater, a former silent movie venue, with another move in 1936 to the Dixie Tabernacle. The Dixie may have been able to seat 3,500, but its wooden benches, sawdust floor, and lack of dressing rooms made it lessthan-desirable. The Opry’s next home was the 2,200-seat War Memorial Auditorium, where it remained from 1939 to 1943. • In 1943, the Opry moved to the famous Ryman Auditorium, its home for the next 31 years. Built and financed in 1892 by Nashville businessman and riverboat magnate Thomas Ryman, the auditorium started out as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, designed as a house of worship. But when the construction costs greatly exceeded the budget, the tabernacle was already $20,000 in debt ($557,704 in today’s dollars) when it opened. As a result, events such as speakers, concerts, boxing matches, and entertainers were scheduled to help it remain solvent. The first sold-out event at the Ryman was a lecture by Helen Keller in 1913. Other early performers included John Philip Sousa, Enrico Caruso, Will Rogers, and W.C. Fields, along with lectures by two U.S. Presidents. • The Ryman soon became known as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” as more and more artists made their debut there. Earl Scruggs had his first performance there in 1945, and in 1949, 25-year-old Hank Williams performed “Lovesick Blues” at the Ryman in his first stage appearance. Hank set a record that night, when he was called back for six encores. ...continued

Two music lovers were being held hostage and both were going to be shot. One of them was a country music lover and the other enjoyed all types of music. Before they were shot, they were asked for one last request before they died. The country music lover said, "I would like to listen to 'Achy Breaky Heart' 50 times in a row." The other music lover said, "Please, shoot me first."

• In 1954, 19-year-old Elvis Presley took to the Ryman stage for his first live performance on a national radio broadcast, singing “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” The Opry manager and most of the patrons were not impressed with his rockabilly rhythm and blues, and he was told that he should concentrate on his truck-driving career. That was the King’s one and only performance at the Opry, as he vowed to himself never to return. • Patsy Cline debuted at the Ryman in 1955 and continued performing until her tragic death in 1963 at age 30. Several scenes from the 1985 movie based on her life, “Sweet Dreams,” were filmed at the Ryman. • Johnny Cash’s debut at the Ryman occurred in 1956. That night wasn’t just a great night for his career, it was also the night he met his future wife June Carter backstage at the Ryman. Cash went on to host his own variety show taped at the Ryman, which aired from June, 1969 to March, 1971. • As Nashville’s downtown began to decay in the late 1960s, the Ryman began to deteriorate as well, and National Life & Accident sought a space for a larger, modern home for the broadcast. They considered the Ryman too small, and the lack of air conditioning and dressing rooms called for a change. The company bought farmland nine miles east of the downtown, and a new complex, including a theme park and hotel was constructed. A six-foot circle was cut from the corner of the Ryman’s stage to be inlaid on the stage of the new Opry House, enabling all artists to perform on the same spot where early country legends stood. The new home featured air conditioning, lots of parking, and a seating capacity of 4,000, and opened in March, 1974.

• Opening night at the new Opry included a performance by then-President Richard Nixon who played the piano for the audience. • Meanwhile, the Ryman sat mostly vacant for the next 20 years, further deteriorating. Several advocated for its destruction, using its bricks to build a chapel at the Opry’s new location, which was met with resounding opposition. In 1994, an $8.5 million restoration began that returned the landmark to its original glory. Since 1999, The Ryman has hosted the Grand Ole Opry every year during the slower winter months, from November to January. • In May, 2010, the Cumberland River flooded Nashville, and the Opry House was severely damaged. The stage was under water, including that circle of wood from the Ryman. The building received a major renovation, the stage was replaced, and the Ryman circle restored and returned to its place of honor at center stage. During the restoration, the Opry was broadcast from two of its former homes, the War Memorial and the Ryman.

• During the unforgettable scene when Mrs. Doubtfire, without the mask, must quickly disguise herself in the presence of social worker Mrs. Sellner, Williams smashed his face into a creamy frosted cake in the refrigerator. He then pretended that the frosting was Mrs. Doubtfire’s favorite skin treatment. However, the icing dripping into Mrs. Sellner’s tea was not in the script. It was hot on the movie set and the icing dripped off Williams’ chin. Williams made up the line, “There you go, you’ve got your cream and your sugar now,” while the cameras were rolling. • Williams also improvised the line “It was a run-by fruiting!” after he pelted Pierce Brosnan in the head with a lime as the group gathered around the country club swimming pool. The bartender in that scene was played by Robert Williams, Robin’s half-brother. • The scene in which Mrs. Doubtfire’s mask is knocked out the window and run over by the garbage truck required 50 takes to get it right. • Mrs. Doubtfire’s favorite term of endearment is “dear,” one that she says a total of 101 times throughout the movie. • Mrs. Doubtfire was 1993’s second-highest grossing film, with Jurassic Park earning the top honors. Robin Williams received the Golden Globe for Best Actor. • The movie was filmed entirely in San Francisco over the course of five months. Five large sets were constructed in a 100,000-square-foot former candy warehouse. The beautiful Victorian home was located at 2640 Steiner Street. After the death of Robin Williams, hundreds of fans left flowers and mementos at the home, then occupied by a local plastic surgeon.
Answer
• British author Anne Fine named her 1984 novel Madame Doubtfire after the proprietor of an antique and curio shop she had happened by in the mid-1970s. It was the story of a divorced father who lost custody of his three children, and opted to dress up like a frumpy English matron in order to get hired as their nanny. • The film’s director, Chris Columbus, has stated that he and his crew studied literally hundreds of photographs in search of just exactly the woman desired for Mrs. Doubtfire’s appearance. • It’s hard to imagine anyone but Robin Williams as Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, but the studio’s first choice was Tim Allen, who was also offered the role of Stu Dunmeyer, one later awarded to Pierce Brosnan. Allen declined both roles. Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Michael Keaton were also considered for the nanny’s role, and author Anne Fine has said she had Warren Beatty in mind. • It should be no surprise that the film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. It was an arduous 4 ½-hour process every day to apply Robin Williams’ makeup. Although the mask appears to be one piece, it was actually designed in several pieces to allow more facial expression. The result was so effective, that Williams’ own son did not recognize him the first time he saw Williams in the get-up, not until Robin started speaking. • Robin Williams modeled the nanny’s voice after Margaret Thatcher and Julia Child.

• “If there is only a light snow on the ground, you can use your leaf blower to clear walkways or a deck.” — D.E. in Minnesota • You might think your dishwasher cleans itself every time you use it, but it could use a hand. Run this cleaning cycle monthly: Fill a two small bowls with white vinegar, and put one each on the upper and lower racks. When the clean cycle is done, sprinkle a cup of baking soda on the bottom and run again. • Cooking Tip: After you have rotisserie chicken for dinner, throw the carcass in a pot and make a quick stock. All you need are: a quartered onion; two carrots and two celery stalks, roughly chopped; a bay leaf and other spices you enjoy; a bit of salt; your rotisserie chicken carcass; and enough water to cover. Boil and let simmer for up to two hours. Strain and store. • If you need to chop bacon for a garnish or slice chicken or beef for fajitas, freeze the meat before you chop. It will make it much easier to get the slices uniform because it doesn’t slide around. • “Look closely at extra-large size boxes of cereal. I was surprised to find that the bulk size of my favorite was actually costing me more per ounce. Now I always check the per-unit price, which is often found on the price tag.” — J.C. in Oklahoma • “If you get gum stuck in your hair, try massaging it with a little dab of butter. BAKING SODA
Its official name is sodium hydrogen carbonate, but we know it as baking soda. Check out the facts on this common kitchen item with a host of uses. • Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is a white crystalline substance with a salty, alkaline taste. It’s found naturally in many mineral springs. In 1791, a French chemist first produced sodium carbonate, which was also known as soda ash. In 1846, two New York bakers, brothers-in-law Dr. Austin Church and John Dwight started producing baking soda commercially in Mr. Dwight’s kitchen, hand-packaging it in paper bags. The popular Arm & Hammer brand was born! • By 1867, production of Church & Dwight’s baking soda had moved to the Vulcan Spice Mills, owned by Dr. Church’s son. Because Vulcan, the Roman god of forge and fire, is symbolized with an arm and hammer, the new company used the image as their logo. • In baking, baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda as the Brits call it, is primarily a leavening agent used in doughs and batters, producing a foaming action that, when exposed to heat, releases carbon dioxide gas which raises the mixture.

Try soaking dentures, retainers, and mouth guards in baking soda and water for a good cleaning and fresh smell! • Did you know that baking soda can relieve the pain and itch of a mosquito bite or poison ivy? Mix up a paste of 3 parts soda and 1 part water, coat the area, and leave on for 20 minutes. You can also soak in a bath with half a cup of baking soda added to the water. ...continued

• In 1972, Arm & Hammer launched a new ad campaign touting baking soda as the remedy for bad smells in your refrigerator. It’s recommended that you switch it out every 30 days. And baking soda is good not only for stinky refrigerators … sprinkle it in your smelly sneakers and gym bags to deodorize them, too! Sellers of used books also use baking soda to absorb the musty smell of old pages. Carpet odors benefit from a liberal sprinkling of baking soda when left on overnight. • Upset stomach? Baking soda has antacid properties and helps fight that extra acid that rises from your stomach to your throat. To treat your indigestion and heartburn, just mix a half-teaspoon of soda in ½ cup of water. Sodium bicarbonate can bring down acid levels in your kidneys, too, and help improve their function. • All those sprays, gels, and conditioners you use on your hair build up after prolonged use. Mixing a teaspoon of soda in your shampoo when you wash your hair eliminates the accumulation of those other products. Baking soda also works to clean your combs and brushes, when soaked in a basin filled with water and a teaspoon of soda. • You know those weird black snake fireworks that produce a long slithering snake when lit? Baking soda is one of the main ingredients. When combined with alcohol and sugar, and lit on fire, the burning alcohol creates heat that caramelizes the sugar. The decomposition produces carbon dioxide gas that makes the snakelike ash, which is the carbonate and black carbon particles. • As the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary approached in 1986, 100 tons of Arm & Hammer baking soda were brought in to safely clean away a century’s worth of coal tar with no damage to the Lady’s copper.
