• Globally, more than 10% of marriages are between first or second cousins. Several countries prohibit it, including China, Taiwan, Korea, and the Philippines, as well as 25 U.S. states. • Rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis created quite the uproar when, at age 22, he married his first cousin Myra when she was just 13. The bad publicity resulted in the cancellation of his tour after only three concerts. Myra was already his third wife, and after their divorce, Lewis went on to marry four more times. • And speaking of marrying 13-year-olds, famed poet and author Edgar Allan also married his 13-year-old first cousin, Virginia Clemm when he was 27 years old. Virginia died at age 24, after suffering from tuberculosis for five years. • Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip are cousins not once, but twice. The pair are distant cousins through the line of Queen Victoria, as both are Victoria’s great-greatgrandchildren. In addition, King Christian IX of Denmark was Phillip’s great-grandfather and Elizabeth’s great-great-grandfather. • The Brits aren’t the only leaders who have married their cousins. The maiden name of Eleanor Roosevelt, who married 32nd president Franklin D. Roosevelt, was in fact Roosevelt! First Lady Eleanor was FDR’s cousin once removed. Cousins marrying cousins wasn’t anything new for FDR’s family – his own parents were sixth cousins. More family connections – Eleanor was 26th president Teddy Roosevelt’s niece. • Two other U.S. presidents wed their cousins – second president John Adams who married his third cousin Abigail Smith, and third president Thomas Jefferson, who was married to his third cousin Martha Wayles. Jefferson’s daughter married her first cousin. ...continued

• Brooke Shields started modeling at the tender age of 11 months in an Ivory Soap ad. She because a successful child model working for the Eileen Ford Agency, and at age 12, was given her first starring role in a film. At 14, she became the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of “Vogue.” “The Blue Lagoon” and “Endless Love” further cemented her stardom. Her second cousin once removed has also had a very successful career. As a young college student in the 1960s, actress Glenn Close traveled with the singing group Up with People. She didn’t begin an acting career until age 27, when she had her first Broadway role. Her first film role was 1980’s “The World According to Garp,” alongside Robin Williams. How are Shields and Close related? Shields’ great-grandmother was the sister of Close’s grandfather. • When Sissy Spacek first moved to New York in the early 1970s to become an actress, her cousin graciously invited her to bunk at his place until she got a break. Her cousin, Rip Torn, helped Sissy enroll in Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio, an institute that he had also attended. Torn was already well-known, having made his film debut in 1956. Spacek’s successful career included her breakout role in Stephen King’s “Carrie” in 1976, a 1980 Oscar for her role as Loretta Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and even a Grammy Award for singing Lynn’s songs in the movie. • Singer Whitney Houston is the most-awarded female artist of all times, with 200 million records sold worldwide. 5 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT WEST NILE VIRUS Myth #1: There’s not much I can do about WNV.
Myth #4: Repellents containing DEET are not safe.
Truth: There is a lot that you, personally, can do to reduce your chance of getting West Nile virus infection. • Make it a habit to apply mosquito repellent with DEET when you’re spending time outdoors. This will reduce the number of mosquito bites you get. • Mosquitoes are usually most active from dusk to dawn. Pay close attention to protection during these hours, or avoid being outdoors if possible. • Reduce mosquito breeding habitat around your house. The species of mosquito most common for transmitting WNV generally stays close to the habitat that it hatched from. • Eliminate any standing water that remains longer than 7 days. Inspect your yard once a week: get rid of containers that aren’t being used, empty water from flower pots, change water in bird baths and maintain clean gutters.
Truth: Repellents containing DEET are very safe when used according to directions. • Because DEET is so widely used, a great deal of testing has been done. When manufacturers seek registration with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for products such as DEET, laboratory testing regarding both short-term and long-term health effects must be carried out. • There are products with different strengths (percentage of DEET) available. The longer the protection you need the higher percent of DEET needed. • Repellent with DEET can be used for both adults and children, according to directions.
Myth #5: As long as my area has a mosquito control program, I don’t have to worry about using repellent.
Myth #2: Kids are at the most danger of getting sick from West Nile Virus. Truth: People over 60 are at the highest risk for developing severe West Nile disease. • Relatively few children have been reported with severe West Nile Virus disease. By contrast, most of the deaths due to WNV were among people over 50 years old. • It is always a good idea for children to avoid mosquito bites, but it’s also important for adults - especially older adults - to take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
Myth #3: It’s only people who are already in poor health who have to worry about West Nile virus.
Truth: Healthy, active older adults who spend time working and exercising outdoors have been affected by severe West Nile virus infection. • Being over 50 is a risk factor for developing severe West Nile disease if infected with the virus. There is a risk of getting mosquito bites while leading an active life outdoors. This doesn’t mean you have to stay inside - it does mean that it’s important to use repellent when you go outside.
Truth: Mosquito control activities don’t eliminate every mosquito, so personal protection is still important. • Grand Forks Health Department maintains a proactive mosquito control program designed to reduce mosquito populations and mosquito-borne diseases. However, this program cannot eliminate all mosquitoes. Personal protection, such as using repellent, keeping window screens in good condition, and control of household breeding sites are important steps for the public.
• Grand Forks currently has a very low population of nuisance mosquitoes. This gives a false impression about the risk of WNV. Even though there are very few mosquitoes in our community, the risk of WNV is still elevated. Please take the necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

King CROSSWORD
“Gladiator” was the Best Picture of 2000, and for good reason! Follow along as Tidbits recounts the facts about this massive production. • Maximus Meridius is a Roman army general loyal to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who has chosen Maximus to succeed to him, after declaring his own son Commodus unfit to rule. Commodus then murders his father, assumes the throne, and reduces Maximus to a slave, killing Maximus’ family for refusing to declare allegiance to the new Emperor. Maximus is then sold to a gladiator trainer named Proximo. • Cast members included Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, Richard Harris as Marcus Aurelius, and Oliver Reed as Proximo. Production began in January, 1999, before the script was even completed, with just 32 pages ready to go. • To re-create a replica of the Roman Colosseum, just the first tier was constructed, a 52-foot-high portion, measuring about one-third of the original’s circumference. This segment of the Colosseum took several months to build, with a cost of $1 million. The remainder of the structure was created digitally. CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) was also used to create much of the arena’s crowds. Two-thousand live actors and actresses filled the bottom two rows, along with 400 cardboard cut-outs of spectators. The remainder of the 35,000 spectators were all CGI. • Because most props, sets, and costumes were unavailable or too costly, everything was manufactured specifically for the film. The team of costume designers created upwards of 10,000 costumes for the cast and extras. Twenty-thousand arrows were created for the battle scenes. It took three months to create the 27,500 component pieces of armor to build the 100 suits of steel armor. An additional 550 suits were manufactured out of polyurethane.
• Russell Crowe lost 40 lbs. in preparation for the role. The filming was tough on the actor, resulting in several injuries. After the movie’s opening battle scene, the wounds on his face were real, having been received when his horse was spooked and pulled Crowe into tree branches. In addition, he suffered a broken foot, a cracked hip bone, an Achilles tendon injury, bicep tendons pulled out of their sockets, and the loss of all feeling in his right forefinger after a sword fight, an ailment that continued for two years. • Opening battle scenes set in the Roman Empire region of Germania were filmed in the woods near Surrey, England. Desert scenes and gladiator combat training scenes were shot in Morocco, with the remainder filmed in Malta. • In the midst of filming in Malta, actor Oliver Reed suffered a fatal heart attack, three weeks before filming would be completed. Rewrites of the script had to be made immediately. CGI was used to complete Reed’s unfinished scenes, digitally scanning his face onto that of an extra. These special effects amounted to a cost of $3.2 million for two minutes of footage. Had all of Reed’s scenes been re-shot with another actor, the cost would have exceeded $25 million. • As far as historical accuracy, Marcus Aurelius actually died of the plague, and Commodus succeeded him. The cruel Commodus brought crippled individuals and amputees into the arena and clubbed them to death. Although the movie seems to indicate that every gladiatorial match was a fight to death, this wasn’t actually true in ancient Rome. • “Gladiator” premiered in May, 2000, and grossed $457 million worldwide in its theatrical run, the second highest-grossing film of 2000. Nominated for 12 Academy Awards, the film captured 5, including Best Actor for Crowe, Best Costume Design, and Best Picture.

If you’re curious about killer bees, Tidbits has the buzz on these flying creatures. • Prior to the 1950s, there were no killer bees! During that decade, South American scientists were working to boost honey production by creating a hybrid bee that would flourish in the subtropical climate of Brazil. They crossed European honey bees with the East African lowland honey bee. When 26 swarms of the hybrid bees escaped their quarantine in 1957, they mated with the local Brazilian bees, resulting in an extremely aggressive, volatile sub-species, which became known as “Africanized” bees. • The killer bees began to spread from Brazil south to Argentina and north to Central America, the West Indies, and Mexico, traveling at a rate of 100 to 300 miles per year. They were first discovered in the United States in 1985 in a California oil field. It was determined that the bees had arrived in a load of oil-drilling pipe shipped from South America rather than having swarmed their way to the area. The first actual hives were found in the U.S. in October, 1990 in southern Texas near the community of Hidalgo. • The Africanized bees are similar in appearance to European bees, just a little smaller and darker in color. The venom of Africanized bees is actually less powerful than the European species, so it’s not a potent sting that earned them the nickname “killer bee.” It’s because they aggressively defend their nests and can chase people for more than a quarter of a mile when provoked. These bees might sting as many as ten times more stings during an attack. • The bees don’t search for humans, but will attack very quickly in great numbers when they feel threatened. Noise from a car passing by or the noise and vibration from a lawn mower can prompt an attack. Strong odors can trigger an attack as well as a reflection off shiny jewelry. ...continued

KILLER BEES (continued):
• Killer bees generally attack the face and ankles. If you encounter a swarm, run away in a straight line, protecting your face. Even though they might pursue you for a quarter of a mile, they are slow fliers, and most healthy people can outrun them. Hiding under water won’t help you, as the swarm will just wait for you to surface! • As the killer bees carry on their migration, they continue to interbreed with European honeybees. They invade and take over the European hives by killing the queen and establishing their own queen. DIFFERENCES:: DIFFERENCES 1. Window is gone. 2. Girl's swimsuit is different. 3. • Today in the U.S., killer bees can be found in southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, western Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and Florida. Because they can’t survive long periods without food, they haven’t moved into areas with harsh winters or extremely dry summers.

• Unfortunately, after all of the hybridization efforts and the subsequent feral bee creation, the desired effect of increased honey production did not happen. Previously, Brazil had been 4th in world honey production, and dropped to 27th place by the early 1990s. European bee colonies produce five times more than the Africanized colonies.

• Where can you find the world’s largest killer bee? Stop by Hidalgo, Texas, the site of the first U.S. discovery and you can visit a roadside attraction, a 20-foot-long, 2,000-lb. fiberglass and steel statue of an enormous Africanized honey bee. And if you’re looking for a good killer bee movie, try 1978’s “The Swarm,” a disaster film about killer bees invading Texas. Even an all-star cast, including Michael Caine, Henry Fonda, Patty Duke, Olivia de Havilland, and Richard Chamberlain couldn’t keep this film from box office flop status.
