The name “Godzilla” comes from the Japanese amalgamation of the Japanese words for “gorilla” plus “whale” which was originally “Gojira” before being Americanized to “Godzilla.” Toho Studios of Japan dreamed up this mythical mutant monster after seeing the success of movies like “King Kong.” Come along with Tidbits as we battle Godzilla!

GODZILLA (continued)
• At the time the movie was released in 1954, it was the most expensive Japanese film ever made. It would have bankrupted Toho Studios if it didn’t make a profit. Fortunately it had the most profitable opening day in Japanese cinematic history. • A sequel, “Godzilla Raids Again” was released just six months after the original hit the theaters. It was a complete flop and was seen for what it was: a cash grab. Godzilla went into retirement. Seven years later, “King Kong vs. Godzilla” was a smash hit and Godzilla was back on top again. • Depending on how you count, there have been about 36 Godzilla movies. At issue is whether or not to count various cartoon versions. 32 of the 36 films were produced by Japan’s Toho Studios, with the others put out by TriStar Pictures and Legendary Pictures in the U.S. • Haruo Nakajima was the original Godzilla suit performer, who starred in 12 consecutive movies beginning with the original 1954 version. As a martial artist, Haruo Nakajima had the strength and agility to make the suit come alive. The suit, made of melted tires, weighed a whopping 220 lbs. Nakajima said it felt like “dragging a tire and giving a piggy-back ride to a fat man while walking.” He could only walk a maximum of 30 ft. while wearing it. It was difficult for Nakajima to move or see, and torturously hot beneath the studio lights. After filming a scene, a cup of sweat would have to be poured out of the suit. • In one scene where Godzilla is set ablaze, you can see the monster screaming and flailing his arms around. In that scene, Nakajima wasn’t acting. He was desperately trying to put the fire out before he was permanently injured. ...continued

GODZILLA (continued)
• Haruo Nakajima died in 2017. In 2018, an asteroid was named after him. In 2019 “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” was dedicated to him. • No monster breathes fire at any point because the costumes were highly flammable. Godzilla breathes a killer atomic breath. • Godzilla’s iconic roar was produced by rubbing a resin-coated leather glove over a double bass string, then slowed way down. • While we think Godzilla as a single character, there have been dozens of Godzillas over the years, with their size increasing as time goes by. In the original film, he was 165 ft. tall, but in the 2019 film “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” he had grown to 400 ft. • In almost all the films, Godzilla speaks in roars only. But in two films, he’s inexplicably able to communicate. In the 1991 classic “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah” Godzilla and the winged monster Rodan are in the middle of a battle when they pause for a conversation in monster-speak (translated by Mothra fairies) to discuss ganging up together on King Ghidorah. • Incredibly, in the 1972 film “Godzilla vs. Gigan” Godzilla has a conversation in garbled growling English monster-speak with his foe Anguirus, as they are investigating a Godzilla-themed amusement park which was secretly created by aliens, and doing battle with a hook-handed chicken alien. • The conversation goes like this: Godzilla: “Hey, Agira!” Anguirus: “What do you want?” Godzilla: “Something funny is going on. You better check.” Anguirus: “Okay.” Godzilla: “Hurry up! Hey Agira! Come on! There’s a lot of trouble ahead!” The scene has nothing to do with the plot. ...continued

• Roland Emmerich, director of the hit “Independence Day,” was chosen to direct the 1998 American remake of Godzilla. The film was a major flop. The Japanese studio Toho, who had approved the rights for the American movie, hated the film. They refused to recognize the American Godzilla as a “real” Godzilla and called him “Zilla” instead because “he took the God out of Godzilla.” Indeed, the American version of Godzilla looked more like a giant iguana and lacked all of Godzilla’s charms. American Godzilla fans hated the movie so much they called the monster GINO, which stands for “Godzilla in Name Only.” It was probably a good thing that Zilla died in the end. • In Toho’s next film “Godzilla: Final Wars,” they resurrected the dead Zilla and had the “real” Godzilla battle him after he destroyed the Sydney Opera House. It took Godzilla only five seconds to defeat Zilla. • Tokyo has a Godzilla-themed hotel, featuring a 40 ft. tall Godzilla head built into the structure, with six rooms looking out on it, giving guests a sense that the monster is looming outside the window. • Local officials declared Godzilla to be an official citizen of the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, Japan. Godzilla was also named the tourism ambassador for the district. Godzilla has become a mascot of Japan. • To commemorate Godzilla’s 50th anniversary in 2004, he was given his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right in front of the Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Held before the U.S. premiere of “Godzilla: Final Wars” the event featured actor Tsutomu Kitagawa accepting the award dressed up as Godzilla. Godzilla was the first non-American character to receive a star.

EVIDENCE BASED MOSQUITO SPRAYING SURVEILLANCE FIRST Grand Forks Mosquito Control (GFMC) employs an active mosquito surveillance program. Daily activities include collecting and identifying mosquitoes, and conducting West Nile virus tests on mosquitoes and birds. Traps are distributed throughout the community and outlying areas. Information gained from these traps help determine the need for adult mosquito control (fogging).
HOW FAST SHOULD THE VEHICLE BE DRIVING WHEN SPRAYING? The recommended speed for spraying is 5 - 20 mph. GFMC sprayers are equipped with variable flow technology; this system adjusts the application rate based on the speed of the vehicle. Therefore, the application rate stays the same. Speed does not have a major effect on the efficacy of the spray provided we’re within 5 - 20 mph. When we conduct aerial spraying the insecticide is applied at 200 230 mph. Research has indicated an increased mortality rate when increasing travel speed. GFMC monitors the vehicles and sprayers with GPS tracking systems. This GPS system records several data points including location, speed, sprayer output, and more. GFMC sprays alleys at 10 mph and hard-surface roads around 15 mph.
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE SPRAYED? GFMC use ultra-low volume sprayers that deliver very small droplets and about 1-1.2 oz of a diluted, non-residual insecticide per acre. This public health pesticide is designed to kill mosquitoes. Because we use such a small amount of pesticide, proper timing and good weather conditions are essential to having a successful spray. The pesticide must directly impact mosquitoes, generally while in flight to be effective. If the mosquitoes are resting in the bushes or in the grass, they may not receive a lethal dose of spray. Once the droplets reach the ground they are no longer effective for killing mosquitoes.
IS THE SPRAY HARMFUL AND DO I NEED TO STAY INSIDE? No, when applied according to label instructions this spray will not harm people, pets, animals, or the environment. This public health pesticide is designed for use in residential areas. You do not need to leave an area when the sprayer goes by but if you choose you may want to avoid or minimize your contact with the cloud of droplets as it passes by. If you prefer to stay inside and close your windows and doors when spraying takes place that’s fine, but it’s not necessary. GFMC employees are trained and certified in the public health category as commercial pesticide applicators.

Here’s a wallpapering tip from way back: If your wallpaper is applied with adhesive, add a few drops of food coloring to the paste. It will give it a slight tint that will not be visible when dried. • Edmund Fitzgerald was chairman of the insurance company that financed the construction of the largest boat to ply the waters of the Great Lakes. The boat, made in Detroit in 1958, was named after him. • The ship weighed over 13,000 tons. Its length of 729 feet meant the ship was about one-eighth of a mile long. • For 17 years, the Edmund Fitzgerald broke records for the largest loads of freight carried on the lakes. The ship’s usual route was to pick up iron ore near Duluth, Minnesota, and haul it to iron works in Detroit. A round-trip took about five days, and the ship made an average of 47 trips per year. By November of 1975, the ship had made 748 round trips, covering over a million miles on the water. • In 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald was under the capable hands of Captain Earnest McSorley. At 63, McSorley had been piloting ships for 44 years. He directed a crew of 28 men. On November 9, the ship pulled out of Superior, Wisconcin, with a full load of ore, heading for Detroit. The weather was clear and calm. The forecast called for a storm on November 10, but the Edmund Fitzgerald had weathered many storms. • Accompanying the Fitzgerald was a similar ship called the Arthur M. Anderson. • When the storm hit, wind gusts topped 90 mph, and waves reached 30 feet. The tallest part of the ship stood 40 feet above the water. Occasionally waves covered the entire ship. • Then the antenneas attached to the radar system snapped, leaving the ship without naviation. By now the Edmond Fitzgerald was approaching Whitefish Bay on the Michigan shore, where it could have sought shelter from the storm. ...cont'd

EDMUND FITZGERALD (cont):
• Captain McSorley looked for the lighthouse, and tried to tune into the radio beacon from Whitefish Bay which would have guided him in, but the storm had knocked out the power to the area and the back-up generator didn’t work. Now he had only out-of-date paper maps to guide him. At 7:10 he contacted the captain of the Authur M. Anderson and asked him to keep an eye on his ship on his own radar in order to help him find his position.

• McSorley reported at that time that his ship had developed a list and was taking on water. He headed for nearby Caribou Island to find shelter. His maps failed to indicate the location of a shallow shoal just off the island. • Around 7:20 that evening, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared off the radar of the Arthur M. Anderson. No distress calls had been sent. No lifeboats had been launched. The ship sank in 500 feet of water. There were no survivors. • It’s possible that hatches on deck leaked faster than the water could be pumped out. It’s possible that once developing a list, the ship was pushed over by a gigantic wave. It’s possible that the ship ran aground on the shoal and ripped a hole in the hull. Several submersibles sent to examine the wreckage, including one trip by Jacques Cousteau, failed to solve the mystery. • The ship’s anchor and its bell are on display as a memorial to the 29 men who died. A replacement bell sits with the wreckage underwater, engraved with their names. • Most have heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald because of the ballad written by Gordon Lightfoot in 1976. Yet there have been over 6,000 shipwrecks on the Great Lakes over the last 400 years and few people can name any lost ship aside from this one.
