• The Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, were nineteenth-century English authors who penned what are viewed today as masterpieces. Charlotte was the author of “Jane Eyre” and three other novels, Emily wrote “Wuthering Heights,” her only novel, and Anne authored “Agnes Grey” and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.” Since writing was considered a “man’s business, and not an appropriate vocation for ladies,” all three sisters originally published their work under male pseudonyms – Currer Bell for Charlotte, Ellis Bell for Emily, and Acton Bell for Anne. There were six children in the Bronte family, which seemed cursed with ill health. Two sisters perished from tuberculosis at age 10 and 11. Charlotte passed away at age 38, Emily at 30, and Anne at 29 years of age. The only son, Patrick, died at age 31. • The twin daughters of 43rd President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Jenna and Barbara, both lead very busy lives. At age 26, Jenna wrote “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,” describing the life of a 17-year-old Latin American mother who was born with HIV. Between the two of them, they have captured 12 Wimbledon singles titles. Both women have won four gold medals at the Summer Olympics, the most of any tennis players. Both turned professional at age 14. • The way was paved for African-American women in the world of tennis by two other sisters, Margaret and Matilda Peters, affectionately called Pete and Repeat. These Washington D.C. sisters were recruited to play tennis at Tuskegee University, where they graduated in 1941. The pair played in the American Tennis Association, a league that was formed to give AfricanAmericans a chance to play competitive tennis at a national level. • Two Polish sisters Stefania and Helena Podgorska were true heroes. Stefania, age 17, and her 7-year-old sister were living alone after their mother and brother, although Catholic, had been taken to Germany to a labor camp, and their father had died. Stefania worked at a local grocery store owned by the Diamants, a Jewish family. When the two Diamant brothers, having escaped from the train on their way to an extermination camp, arrived on the Podgorska doorstep, Stefania took them in, along with 11 others, including a local dentist and his family members. She worked at a factory, using her wages to keep them all fed, as well as knitting sweaters to sell. The situation grew tense when an SS officer moved next door. The 13 Jews lived undetected in the attic of a two-room cottage for 2 ½ years until liberated by the Soviet Army in 1944. All 13 survived the Holocaust. The elder Diamant brother proposed marriage to Stefania, and the couple moved to America, where he became a dentist. Helena remained in Poland and became a physician. • Thousands of U.S. troops were entertained during World War II by the Andrews Sisters, Laverne, Maxene, and Patti. Their distinctive Dixieland swing style of music included such hits as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” They got their start in 1930 when the youngest sister was 12 and the oldest was 19 by winning a local talent contest at Minneapolis’ Orpheum Theater. The oldest sister, LaVerne, played the piano accompaniment there for silent film showings, trading this service for free dancing lessons for herself and her sisters. These “Wartime Sweethearts” had more than 1,800 recorded songs to their credit as well as appearances in 16 movies.

WEST NILE VIRUS RISK FACTORS West Nile virus (WNV) is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito most common for transmitting this virus is one that is widespread throughout the Grand Forks region. This mosquito does not discriminate. People of all ages are susceptible to WNV infection, but the elderly are at higher risk for developing the more severe form of this disease (neuroinvasive illness). Children infected with WNV generally show no symptoms or may have a mild fever.

Risk factors for West Nile virus: • Time of year – The majority of WNV cases occur from July – September. • Geographic region – The Dakotas have reported some of the highest cases per capita in the United States. • Time spent outdoors not wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellent – If you work or spend a lot of time outdoors (golfing, gardening, hunting, etc.), you’re at a higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. • Proximity – If you live in an area where WNV has already been identified or near mosquito larval habitat. • If you have a weakened immune system. The best way to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites. • Use mosquito-repellent products containing DEET. • Wear long sleeves and pants. • Eliminate any standing water from your property, such as trash bins, plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, etc.

Repellents: Still One of the Best Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites Unfortunately, there’s no easy solution to controlling mosquitoes. The more rain and standing water we have, the more mosquito habitat available for those pesky critters. The start of the 2014 mosquito season has been hot and wet thereby producing a healthy hatch of skeeters. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites is essential to keeping the mosquito population in check. When the adult mosquito population seems unbearable, turn to one of the best prevention methods available…a can of OFF! Mosquito repellents with DEET are safe and very effective when applied according to the label. They’ve even improved many of these products so they go on dry, not oily. • Filming took three months, from September to December, 1991, on a budget of around $31 million. “Sister Act” was a huge box office success, with its opening weekend in May, 1992 grossing nearly $12 million in the U.S. Overall, domestic gross was nearly $140 million, with a worldwide figure of almost $232 million, the eighth-highest-grossing film in 1992. It held the Number Two spot at the box office for four weeks. • Not one, but two lawsuits were filed against the production company, claiming plagiarism. The first was by actress Donna Douglas of “Beverly Hillbillies” fame, who claimed that she and a partner had developed a screenplay from the book “A Nun in the Closet” seven years before “Sister Act” was released, citing more than 100 similarities and plagiarisms between the movie and her screenplay. The second suit was filed by a nun named Delois Blakely, declaring that her 1987 autobiography “The Harlem Street Nun” was really the basis for the movie, and that a movie executive had approached her for the rights. The ruling judges awarded no damages to either party. • “Sister Act” was nominated for two Golden Globes -Best Motion Picture and a Best Actress nomination for Whoopi Goldberg. A sequel “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” was released the following year, when Sister Mary Clarence returned to teach music at a run-down Catholic school slated for closure. It was nowhere nearly as successful as the original. On a $38 million budget, its worldwide gross was just over $57 million. • The movie was turned into a stage musical, premiering in 2006 in Pasadena, California. It opened in London in 2009, and Whoopi Goldberg appeared for several appearances there as Mother Superior. The musical opened on Broadway in 2011, and had a run of 561 performances over a period of 16 months, nominated for five Tony Awards.

• Five identical girls entered the world on May 28, 1934, in a log cabin in Callander, Ontario. The world’s first living quintuplets were the offspring of the Dionne family, who already had six children when the girls were born. Emilie, Cecile, Yvonne, Annette, and Marie had a combined weight of 14 lbs. When the quints were four months old, they were moved into a special hospital and nursery across the road from their home, where they lived until they were nine years old. The compound included a glassed-in play space where tourists could view the sisters. About 3,000 people visited the observation area every day, about 3,000,000 people between 1936 and 1943, bringing in $50 million in tourist revenue. They were Ontario’s biggest tourist attraction, even surpassing Niagara Falls. The quints were featured in advertisements for everything from dolls to oatmeal to dishwashing liquid to war bonds, creating millions of dollars in revenue for the province of Ontario. Their earnings were placed in a trust fund controlled by the government, which was misappropriated, leaving them in financial straits in their later years. During the 1990s, the three remaining quints were living together on $750 a month, and approached the Canadian government for a settlement. In 1998, they were awarded a $4 million tax-free remuneration by Canadian officials as compensation for their exploitation. Emilie, who became a nun, died of an epileptic seizure at age 20, while Marie perished in 1970, and Yvonne in 2001. Three went on to marry and have children. • The name of Elizabeth Blackwell isn’t wellknown by most, but Elizabeth is famous for being the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. Having a female friend suffering from a terminal disease and longing for a female doctor prompted Elizabeth to pursue a medical career. She was rejected by several medical schools before finally being accepted by the Geneva Medical College (now called Hobart College) in upstate New York. The school’s administration called for a vote by their 150 male students, requiring a unanimous vote from all for her acceptance. All the young men voted to accept her, and she began her studies in October, 1847. After her graduation at the top of her class in 1849, while working with infants, she contracted a disease that left her blind in one eye, the end of her hopes of becoming a surgeon. In 1857, Elizabeth and her sister, doctor and surgeon Emily Blackwell, established the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, the nation’s first hospital run by women and for women. The institution still exists today, part of the New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. In the late 1860s, the sisters also established a medical school for women. There were actually five Blackwell sisters, none of whom ever married. • Who were Jayne and Joan Boyd? These twin sisters were known as the Wrigley’s gum Doublemint Twins from 1959 until 1963. They first sang the “Double your pleasure, double your fun” jingle in Wrigley’s ads at age 21.
