You may be familiar with the DeLorean from seeing the time-traveling version in the 1985 blockbuster “Back to the Future.” But how much do you know about this stainless steel vehicle? This week, Tidbits takes you for a drive through the facts. • John DeLorean was an outstanding student, both at a specialty honors technical high school and at the Lawrence Institute of Technology. After a three-year interruption in his studies to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to finish his industrial engineering engineeri degree. A master’s degree from the Chrysler Institute in Automotive Engineering was next, after which he joined the Chrysler engineering team. But after less than a year, he moved on to the Packard Motor Company in 1953. In 1956, DeLorean’s career took a dramatic upturn when he joined General Motors’ Pontiac division, where he was responsible for bringing us the GTO, Firebird, and Grand Prix. At age 40, he became the head of Pontiac, the youngest GM division head in history. Another promotion followed in 1969 to head up the entire Chevrolet division, with an annual salary and bonuses of $600,000 (about $4.25 million in today’s dollars).

THE DELOREAN (cont):

• DeLorean seemed to have the Midas touch, and his success soared. He became part owner of the San Diego Chargers and the New York Yankees. With Chevrolet experiencing record sales, DeLorean was on track to become president of General Motors. However, in 1973, he left GM to pursue his dream of his own company. • DeLorean began seeking investors for the business, and celebrities like Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis, Jr., and country singer Roy Clark. Then came the breakthrough in funding from the British government, who pledged about $120 million if DeLorean would build the factory in Northern Ireland. • Dunmurray, a suburb of Belfast, was chosen as the site of the plant, to revive the war-torn area, where about 50% of men were out of work. Ground was broken in a peat bog in October, 1978. Critics claimed it wouldn’t be completed and operating for at least five years, yet in 16 months, it was ready, and was producing cars within two years of the start of construction, with the first DeLorean rolling off the assembly line in January, 1981. The company’s goal was to produce 20,000 cars annually. • Although it was John DeLorean’s brainchild, the car’s shape was devised by auto designer Giorgetto Gingiano, the same genius behind some models of BMW, Lorus, Maserati, Lexus, and Ferrari. The futuristic gullwing doors were John DeLorean’s idea, but it was Guigiaro who put the vision into reality. It was DeLorean’s intention for his rearengined vehicle to compete with the Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Porsche. • There was no paint or clear coat on the original DMC-12 because it was made from stainless steel. To be precise, it was SS304, the most widely-used stainless available, the same material used to manufactured beer kegs, restaurant kitchen counters, sinks, hollowware and saucepans. This grade of stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and formability. ...continued

THE DELOREAN (cont):

• The door’s torsion bars, which facilitated the lifting and lowering of the doors, were developed by Grumman Aerospace, the same company that made the Apollo Lunar Module and the F-14. • The car’s engine was a 2.7-liter V6, developed by a group consisting of Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. The DeLorean was officially known as the DMC12, for the DeLorean Motor Company. The “12” represented what was supposed to be the price -$12,000 – but by the time it hit the dealers, its suggested retail price had been upped to $25,000.

• Right from the start, there were problems with the vehicle. With a heavy stainless steel body and a small engine, it was just plain slow! The speedometer topped out at just 85 mph.The engine ventilation system experienced failure, which produced overheating. The electrical system frequently failed, and batteries died prematurely. The celebrated gullwing doors presented a major safety issue, since if the car were to roll onto the roof in an accident, the occupants had no way to get out. The doors also were known to leak. Reviews were lukewarm at best. • Within a year, DeLorean was clearly in financial trouble. The company had failed to recover the $175 million investment costs. The final DMC-12 was produced on Christmas Eve, 1982, the last of about 9,000 produced. Nearly half of the cars produced were still unsold. A restructuring deal was put in place, requiring John DeLorean to come up with $27 million cash to keep the company alive. In a desperate attempt to save DMC, he agreed to smuggle 59 lbs. of cocaine, worth about $24 million. DeLorean was approached by an FBI informant and the sting operation was captured on video. ...cont'd

• In October, 1982, the U.S. government charged DeLorean with cocaine trafficking. He successfully evaded the charges by arguing that the FBI had “unfairly targeted and illegally entrapped” him by allowing the FBI informant to solicit DeLorean because he was known to be in financial ruins. Although he was acquitted, by then it was too late for the factory to re-open.

• So what happened to all of the unsold cars at the factory? When the company went under, one of the investors, Consolidated Stores Corporation, bought the cars and sold them itself. Today, that company is better known as Big Lots. • By the time “Back to the Future” was in production in 1985, the DeLorean was already a collector’s item. Six cars were used in the filming, plus an additional replica made of fiberglass for the flying car scenes. Three out of the six are still in existence, two at Universal Theme parks, and one privately-owned. • “Back to the Future” almost didn’t have a flying DeLorean. The original concept called for a timetraveling refrigerator! • In 2000, John DeLorean was in the midst of personal bankruptcy proceedings and was selling off his assets, including his 434-acre New Jersey estate, Lamington Farms. It was purchased by none other than Donald Trump, who paid $35 million and converted the property into a world-class U.S.-Open quality golf course. Trump did keep some of the property’s structures as summer cottages for his family.

• Brand-new DeLoreans are still available! When DMC folded, a Texas company snapped up all the excess parts and drawings. The DeLorean Motor Company of Texas offers a DMC-12 made in Texas from original parts for about $65,000.

Here's How to Find Where a Vet Is Buried

*Answer located further back in this issue.

The Veterans Legacy Memorial website has been expanded by 500,000 names at 93 veterans cemeteries across the country. This is in addition to the 4 million names already there at 155 cemeteries. The VLM is a digital platform and repository for information on veterans buried in those cemeteries. Friends and family can add biographies, photos, documents and other information to the listing for each veteran as a way of paying tribute. So far, 22,000 friends and families have added information to their veteran's profile page. For those of us who live far from the cemeteries where our veterans are buried, being able to add to a legacy page helps. For me, my family is only partially covered at this point. My grandfather at Fort Sam is in the database. Another relative at Riverside is in the database. Three others aren't, including my parents at Arlington National. They are, however, in ANC's website, although there is no way to add photos (except for the photo of the marker that is already there) or stories or biographies. Perhaps Arlington will be among those added in the halfmillion new names. Eventually the project intends to cover veterans buried in state and local cemeteries, as well as private cemeteries. To look for your veteran, go to www.vlm.cem.va.gov and put in the name -- first name last name, no comma. Click on the FAQ for more information. To find a veteran at Arlington National, go to www.arlingtoncemetery.mil. If your veteran is listed in the Veterans Legacy Memorial, contribute to the profile. Pictures are a great addition, as is bio information and personal stories. As a side note, Wreaths Across America will be on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. See their website (www.wreathsacrossamerica.org) for ways you can help with wreath-laying at the 2,500 locations.

WONDERFUL WORDS

MONTHS OF THE YEAR

The ancient Romans are responsible for the names of the months of the year. This week, Tidbits does a quick run through the year to discover their origins. • Even though the early Roman calendar had 12 months, just 10 of them had names. This was due to winter being considering a “dead time” when the government and military weren’t active, a sabbatical of sorts for reflection and purification. • The Romans considered March the first month of the year, and named it for Mars, their god of war, since the military resumed their crusades at that time after their two-month hiatus, months that later were named January and February. • The Latin term meaning “to open” -- “aperio” -- was given to the month of April, symbolic of springtime when flowering buds begin to open. • The Roman goddess Maia was their earth goddess who watched over the growth of plants, giving us the name for May. In addition, this was the time the nation honored their elders, called “maiores” in Latin. • Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and welfare of women, was the inspiration for the name of June. • July was the fifth month in the lunar calendar, named as such to honor the Roman dictator, Julius Caesar. Prior to Caesar’s death, the month was known as Quintilis, from the Latin for “fifth.” • Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, and grandnephew of Julius Caesar, was the source of the name of August. The Latin word “augustus” translates “noble and majestic.” The month was previously called Sextilis, translated from Latin for “sixth.”

• With March as the first month of their lunar calendar, the Romans named the seventh month after their word for seven – “septem” – giving us the name of what is now our ninth month. The same principal applied to their eighth month, October. The Latin word for eight, “octo,” gave us not only the name of the month, but other words connected to the number, such as octopus, octagon, and octet. • Latin’s root word “novem” translates “nine,” giving us the name of what was then the ninth month. • The Latin word “decem” lends its name to the Roman’s tenth month, as well as other words, such as decathlon, (an athletic event with 10 track and field events), decade (a period of 10 years), and decimal (any number using a base of 10). • When the lunar calendar (which only named 10 months) was changed to the solar calendar, the method of measuring the months was based on the time it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun. January and February then became the first two months of the year. January was named for the Roman god Janus, who was the protector of gates and doorways. This god was also the god of new beginnings, and is symbolized with two faces, one looking into the past, the other looking into the first steps of the journey of a new year. • The Romans gave the second month the name Februarius, after their festival of purification and atonement, Februalia. Citizens made offerings and sacrifices to the gods of the dead for an entire month. We've Got Room for Your Advertisement! Call Chad Today at 701-740-0968 to Promote Your Business in Tidbits!

It's Time to Review, Renew Medicare

Come start your holiday shopping with primitives, recycled treasures, & homespun gifts.

by Matilda Charles

This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you'd like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it's said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you're used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other things, check to be sure you'll still have those. Compare all of the plans to get what you need. If you have a Part D drug plan and need insulin, be especially careful in selecting your plan. An additional 500 plans will include insulin this year, but again, read the fine print to be sure it's what you need. A warning: Be sure your drugs are covered. If you have questions you can call 1-800-MEDICARE, 24/7, to get help. You can also seek assistance at the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for your state (www.shiphelp.org). If you are low income or have a disability, you might be eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay for premiums and deductibles, as well as co-payments. Go online to cms.gov and search for Medicare Savings Programs. Click on one of the four categories for more information and income limits.

VETERANS DAY

O HONORING ALL WHO SERVED O

THE BERLIN WALL

November 9 is Berlin Wall Day, a time set aside to commemorate the fall of this historic structure, triggering the fall of communism in eastern and central Europe. • At the end of World War II, the Potsdam Agreement divided Germany among the Allied Forces – the United Kingdom, the U.S., and the Soviet Union. The eastern part of the country went to the Soviet Union, becoming the German Democratic Republic, a dictatorship, while the western part went to the U.K. and the U.S., becoming the Federal Republic of Germany, a democracy. • With the reallocation, the city of Berlin was located completely with the Soviet zone, and West Berlin became an island of freedom in the midst of communist East Germany. Prior to the wall’s construction, residents could cross back and forth between East and West without restriction, whether to work or shop or attend functions, walking, driving, or riding the trains and subway. • Between 1949 and 1961, more than 2 million East Germans escaped to the West. In the summer of 1961, nearly 1,000 people were defecting every day. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave the order to build the wall. • On the night of August 12, 1961, with no warning, the Berlin Wall was abruptly constructed of barbed wire and concrete blocks. Berliners awoke to a 27-mile barrier separating the city into east and west. Before long, the Wall expanded to 96.3 miles, 11 to 15 feet in the air. • Within the city, there were actually two walls, each bordering its section of the city. Between the walls was a 160-foot “death strip,” a no man’s land where guards were allowed to shoot anyone trying to escape. Guard dogs, floodlights, and trip-wire machine guns lined the strip. Along the entire length of the wall, there were 302 watchtowers, 55,000 land mines, and more than 3,000 guard dogs. ...cont'd

• The Communists called it the “Antifascistischer Schutzwall,” or “antifascist bulwark,” and claimed its purpose was to keep what they deemed Western fascists from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state. But in reality, its primary purpose was to keep East Germans from defecting to the West. • In 1987, President Ronald Reagan gave his famous speech at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, urging Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” • During the Wall’s 28-year existence, more than 5,000 East Germans were able to cross the border to freedom. Some jumped out of windows that bordered the Wall, while others flew out in hot air balloons or crawled through the sewers or tunnels. More than 170 were killed during an escape attempt, and another 5,000 captured. • East German officials didn’t plan for the wall to come down beginning the night of November 9, 1989. They were announcing that restrictions on travel visas would be lifted, but a local politician misread his notes, instead announcing that “immediately, without delay,” East Germans would be allowed to cross into West Berlin rather than merely applying for the lengthy process of obtaining a travel visa. With crowds numbering in the hundreds of thousands surging to the border, the overwhelmed guards opened the barrier. Within days, cranes and bulldozers were at work pulling down section after section. • Many people chipped off pieces of the Wall as souvenirs in the followings weeks. They became known as “Mauerspechte,” or “wallpeckers.” • Upwards of 40,000 sections of the wall were recycled into building materials for reconstruction projects. Several hundred sections were put on the auction block and can be found around the world in various locations, including the gardens at the Vatican. An unusual home for one section is in the men’s room of a Las Vegas casino. Locally Owned
