RAISING A STINK

• The white plume grevillea plant of Australia has beautiful blooms, but they smell like dirty socks in order to attract flies which pollinate it. • The stinkhorn mushroom emits the odor of poop in order to attract flies. The flies land on the fungus and devour the nutrient-rich slime on the mushroom. Embedded in the slime are the spores of the mushroom, which enter the digestive tract and stick to the feet of the flies in order to be dispersed. • The durian is a fruit common in Indonesia. The odor of the fruit has been described as a cross between a sewer, rotten onions, and decaying fish. In spite of the smell, the fruit has a very delectable taste. The stench alerts pigs, primates, elephants, and tigers to its location. Once devoured, durian seeds are spread in the animal’s scat. • Bears eat the aptly named skunk cabbage after hibernating because it’s a laxative.

GENERATING HEAT

• Some plants are capable of generating their own heat, in a process called thermogenesis. The skunk cabbage generates heat in the soil around its roots in the spring, warming the earth so that its seeds dropped the previous year can germinate before all the other plants around it start growing. The temperature of the ground near a skunk cabbage can be up to 36 F warmer than surrounding areas. • The dwarf mistletoe is a parasitic plant that lives on the bark of pine trees. It has seed pods that heat up, causing the pod to burst open, shooting the seeds out at nearly 60 mph. The seeds are covered with a sticky substance to help them adhere to pine needles. When it rains, the adhesive dissolves, allowing the seed to slide onto a twig or branch of the tree, where it takes root. ...continued

NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE

• The yellow archangel is a common plant found in Europe. It looks exactly like the stinging nettle. Even though it’s harmless, animals avoid eating it. • A type of vine found in rain forests of Chile and Argentina starts clinging to whatever tree it’s closest to. Then its leaves morph to match the leaves of the host tree, perfectly imitating the leaf pattern, size, color, and vein structure.

• The resurrection fern shrivels up when rainfall ceases. In this dormant state, it can survive on just 3% of the normal amount of precipitation. It looks dead and unappetizing so it doesn’t get eaten, and little of the leaf surface is exposed to sunlight. When the rain returns, it springs back into life. FASTEST BLADDER IN THE WEST • The bladderworts have the fastest moving plant parts in the world. Living in bogs, ponds, and lakes, the plant creates little bladders like underwater sacks, with one end opening into the water, and a sweet nectar inside the bag. When an insect swims inside to get the nectar, it tickles tiny hairs on the plant which trigger the bladder to snap closed in a split second, trapping the bug inside. The plant digests the insect over the next few days, obtaining nutrients such as nitrogen and phosporus that are not otherwise available.

COMMUNICATION

• When an animal starts eating the leaves of the acacia tree, the plant emits toxic chemicals called tannins which cause the leaves of the plant to droop, looking unappetizing, while also making them taste bitter. The tree also gives off the gas ethylene which alerts other acacia trees in the area, and those trees immediately start producing the tannins and giving off ethylene gas of their own, spreading the message. ...continued

FACTOIDS

• The word “banana” comes from the Arabic word for fingers. • Herbs come from leaves. Spices come from the seed, berry, stem, bark, root, or bulb. • Cabbage, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, and savoy are all the same species but are so selectively bred that they no longer resemble one another. • Mustard and wasabi aren’t spicy until they are crushed. When the plant’s cells are damaged, two otherwise harmless components mix and produce the compound responsible for the familiar pungent taste. • In 1973, the world’s most isolated tree, Arbre du Ténéré, was hit and destroyed by a drunk driver, despite being 250 miles from any other living tree. • Grass plants make up 26% of all plant life. • Earth has more than 60,000 known tree species. Trees are the longest-living organisms on earth. • Because of the Amazon rain forest, Brazil has the greatest biodiversity of any country on the planet with more than 55,000 known species of plants, many of which are not found anywhere else. • Many plants have leaves with pointy ends, called drip tips. This helps shunt rainwater off the end of the leaves, keeping them dry in order to prevent mold and to allow the leaves to continue respiring. • There are about 700 species of carnivorous plants.

TeleHealth Visits Avoid COVID Delays at VA

*Answer located further back in this issue.

The deployment of the new electronic health record at one of the Department Veterans Affairs health systems has been delayed. As of now, so many employees are sick with COVID-19 and unable to work that the rollout has been moved from March 5 to April 30. That particular system, with multiple VA locations in 15 counties, currently has a COVID positivity rate of over 30% with one county seeing an increase of 150% in the past two weeks. Think about that, and ask yourself: Can your next appointment at the VA be accomplished via TeleHealth? While the VA was one of the first agencies to mandate that all their employees be vaccinated against COVID, facts and figures show that it's not complete protection. TeleHealth uses computers, phones and tablets to connect you with your medical team in real-time video or a phone call. Accessing care this way means you don't have physically go in. This can be especially helpful if you are in a rural area far from a VA facility or are disabled, older or very ill. You can even talk to specialists via TeleHealth.

Dealing With Empty Store Shelves

There's been a shift in food availability across the country. If your area is just now getting hit with empty store shelves, this concept is shocking and new to you. For those of us who have lived with this for a long time (for over a year in my area), it's more of the same, but worse now. Here are a few thoughts to help you get through this.

Ask your store manager about any missing item. If he says that he's no longer able to order it, that likely means the item isn't on the store's list anymore. In that case, call the manufacturer. You might well discover that they're no longer making that particular item.

Team up with a few friends and equip each one with a list of a few must-have items for each person. For one it might be distilled water for a C-pap machine. For another it might be one certain brand of low-sugar canned fruit. Then, when you shop, keep an eye out for those items. If you spot something, make a call and ask if you should pick it up while it's right there in front of you. If you're desperate for a particular item you know is in stock, call the store manager and ask for it to be put it at the customer-service counter. If you don't do this too often, chances are you'll be accommodated. If your store finally gets a missing item back in stock, don't hoard. At most, take just one extra if you'll use it within several weeks. That will buy you a little time if it goes missing again. ©2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Set it at a low 55 degrees F and open up the cabinets that have pipes exposed. This way, air will circulate, and it won’t get too cold to allow the pipes to burst. Have a neighbor turn your faucets to a trickle if below-freezing weather is expected. • Wrap the metal collar of your paintbrush with masking tape before painting. This marked Congress' first use of the Constitutional provision allowing veto overrides. • On March 1, 1932, Charles Lindbergh, Jr., the 20-monthold son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, is kidnapped from the family's new mansion in New Jersey. The baby's body was found a mile from the home. One of the $70,000 ransom bills was discovered and tracked to a German immigrant. He was tried, convicted and electrocuted in 1936.

• On March 4, 1944, Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, the head of Murder, Inc., is executed at Sing Sing Prison in New York. Lepke's downfall came when several members of his notorious killing squad turned into witnesses for the government. • On Feb. 28, 1953, Cambridge University scientists James Watson and Francis Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes. The molecular biologists were aided significantly by the work of another researcher, Rosalind Franklin, although she did not share the subsequent Nobel Prize. • On March 5, 1963, the Hula Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented. An estimated 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in its first four months of production. • On March 2, 1978, two men steal the corpse of the film actor Charles Chaplin from a cemetery in Switzerland. Chaplin's wife refused to pay the $600,000 ransom and police later arrested two auto mechanics who were convicted of grave robbing and attempted extortion.

STRANGE DIETS

• Gerard’s water snake of South Asia is the only species of snake that does not swallow its prey whole. It eats freshly molted crabs which are much larger than the snake is. The snake coils around the crab and takes one bite at a time. • In an evolutionary arms race, tadpoles that were frequently eaten by salamanders grew into different body shapes so they were too wide to fit into the salamander’s mouth. The salamanders then morphed into a different shape with broad enough mouth to gulp down the tadpoles. • When a minnow is attacked and eaten by a predator, special cells in the skin release a chemical that warns the rest of the minnows in the school, which then go into hiding. • One particular species of crab lives off the coast of Taiwan near underwater hydrothermal vents. Occasionally these volcanic vents spew plumes of extremely hot water, killing everything in their path as they rise to the surface of the sea. The crabs quickly move in to feast. • Cleaner fish dart in and out of the mouths of larger fish in order to remove parasites and other pests. But some cleaner fish actually prefer to eat the mucus secreted inside the mouths of their host rather than the pests. • The archer fish uses a jet of water to knock insects off foliage, where they land in the water. The archer fish not only has deadly accurate aim, but it also knows exactly where that insect will fall into the water, arriving at the point of splashdown milliseconds after the bug hits the water, so that no one else can steal the meal. • A female hippopotamus is able to eat so much that the content of her stomach accounts for one quarter of her entire body weight. ...continued

• Piglets always suckle from the same nipple. • About one out of every 20 vervet monkeys, when offered an alcoholic drink, will become a binge drinker and drink to the point of passing out. About one out of every seven monkeys will not drink at all. • When a mosquito bites a mammal, she gorges on so much blood that she swells up to twice her normal size. The extra weight makes flying difficult. To solve this, the mosquito excretes excess water and salts from the blood it has just ingested, urinating on the victim who has just donated blood. • A typical bee has to visit 75 flowers to collect enough food to raise a single baby bee to adulthood. • The female golden orb weaving spider tends to eat the male right after mating, which gives her a protein-filled meal. Some male orb weaving spiders wait until the female is busy eating another bug before they mate, giving them a better chance of surviving. • Ants seek out seeds that have fallen on the ground, eating the pulpy coating of the seed. Then they cover the hard kernel of the seed with an anti-fungal chemical they manufacture in their bodies. This coating gives the seed a better chance at germinating. • There are about 14,000 species of bugs that feed on the blood of animals, and around 300 to 400 of those regularly feed on humans, their livestock, and their pets. • Many species of mammals play host to a variety of species of moth that feed from their tears. Elephants, buffalo, horses, deer, and pigs each have a particular type of moth that generally land on the creature’s eyes while they sleep and absorb tears. Carnivores, birds, and marsupials never host any kind of tear-drinking moth. Locally Owned
