Some are small islets, while others are coral islands circling a lagoon. The “Big Is land,” Hawaii, is the largest in square miles of all, with 4,028 square miles, and is the only is land containing active volcanoes. Oahu is the third largest of the major islands, but it’s the most populated, with that number upwards of 950,000.

• It’s a misconception that the number of rattles on a rattlesnake equates to its age in years. It’s actu ally the number of times the snake has shed its skin. During the first year of life, a snake might shed its skin multiple times, with a new rattle added each time. The first molting might be just a few weeks after birth. In addition, as rattlesnakes slither along with their rattles held up, the rattles often break off. The average life span of a rattle snake in the wild is 10 to 20 years.

• If you’ve ever wondered how many dimples are on a golf ball, there’s no pat answer. The number can vary between 330 and 400. Most American golf balls contain 336. The dimples reduce the aerodynamic drag on the ball, resulting in the ball flying a longer distance. The spin of the ball is also affected by the diameter of the dimples as well as their shape. Some golf balls have round dimples, while others are hexagonal.

There are seven symbols in the sys tem: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M, representing 1, 5, 10, 5, 100, 500, and 1000, respectively. A letter placed after another letter of greater value increases it, for example, VI = 6, LXX = 70, and LXXXVIII = 88. A letter placed before another letter of greater value decreases it: IV = 4, XC = 90, CM = 900. The system originated in ancient Rome and con tinued in use until about the 14th century, when they began being replaced by our current Arabic numerals.

• As of 2022, there are 7,151 recognized languages. However, that number is always changing, as new languages are discovered. About 2,000 different languages are spoken in the countries of Africa. Although the country of Papua New Guinea is just 4.71% the size of the United States, more than 840 languages are spoken there, making it the most linguistically diverse country in the world. A mere 23 languages account for more than half the world’s population. English is the largest, if you count both native and non-native, but if only native speakers are counted, Mandarin Chinese has the largest number of speakers. About 40% of the world’s languages are now endangered, many with less than 1,000 speakers remaining.

If you're a veteran, are you in a veterans service organi zation? There are four groups, and while they differ in their origins, they all have the same goal: to help veterans. The largest organization is the American Legion. Across the country are more than 12,000 posts and approximately 2 million members. The Legion is to be thanked for the GI Bill of Rights, which has helped many veterans get a col lege or trade education and a home with a low mortgage rate. But the Legion has done much more: The organization has also donated $1 million to the Vietnam Veterans Memo rial Fund and sponsored a study on the effects of Agent Or ange. If you want to explore the Legion, read more online at www.legion.org.Likethename says, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) steps up to help disabled veterans with nearly any thing they need. Just last year, for example, they provided 163,000 rides for veterans to reach their medical appointments and helped file over 150,000 claims. They have 26 transition service offices, helping veterans make the change to civilian life by providing benefits counseling. For more information on the DAV, start with www.dav

Started in 1899 by a few veterans during the Spanish-American War, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has worked since then to get the rights and benefits that veterans deserve. • In July, 2000, a Concorde flight bound for New York from Paris crashed and burned on take-off from the Paris airport. The crash, which killed all 109 people aboard plus another four on the ground, was caused by a titanium shard on the runway, bursting one of the craft’s tires, which sent fragments into one of the Con corde’s engines, igniting a fuel tank.

SUDOKUWeekly AnswerCROSSWORDKing Answer

• There were 20 original Concorde jets, 18 of which remain, scattered around the world’s aerospace muse ums

• A nine-member crew was on board – two pilots, a flight engineer and six flight attendants. While the usual training time for pilots on a regular jet was 8 weeks, Concorde pilots’ training lasted 28 weeks. Seating ca pacity for the Concorde ranged from 92 to 128, but it wasn’t just people the airliner carrier – it was also used to carry commodities such as diamonds and human or gans destined for transplants.

• Several factors contributed to the end of the Concorde – the Paris crash, rising fuel prices, aging planes, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The supersonic jet’s last com mercial flight was in October, 2003, from New York to London. There had been 50,000 flights and 2.5 million passengers.

OUT OF THIS WORLD

• The oldest person ever to fly on the Concorde was 105-year-old Eva Woodman, a nursing home resident who had never been in a plane. For her birthday in 1998, Eva (who was 11 years old when the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight in 1903) was treated to a 90-minute flight aboard the plane. She arrived back at the nursing home to a party complete with a Concordeshaped cake.

• In 1996, the Concorde shattered all records for com mercial transatlantic crossing, when the flight from New York to London was completed in two hours and 53 minutes.

For 27 years, the Concorde shuttled passengers at a speed up to twice the speed of sound. Tidbits invites you to check out the facts on this supersonic passenger jet.

• The craft was painted with a specially-developed white paint that reflected the intense heat creating during the flight. The extreme speeds caused such heat that the plane would expand 6 to 10 inches during flight. Even the windows were hot during flight, unlike the cold of a normal jet plane.

• The Concorde was designed and built by a team of British and French engineers in the late 1960s. The plane was named as such because the word “Con corde” means “agreement.” It was built with powerful Rolls Royce engines and a nose cone that could move up and down, which reduced drag and enhanced top aerodynamic efficiency, as well as giving pilots a clear view during taxiing, take-off, and landing.

• The aircraft was not for those of moderate income. Pas sengers paid dearly for the speed and luxury, more than 30 times the price of a regular ticket. In 1997, those fly ing from New York to London paid $7,995 for a roundtrip ticket.

THE CONCORDE

• The first flights took off in January, 1976, with a Brit ish Airways jet flying from London to Bahrain, and an Air France plane flying from Paris to Rio de Janeiro. The jets flew at an altitude of 60,000 feet, over 11 miles high! It was high enough that passengers could see the curvature of the Earth.

• The word supersonic merely means that the jet could fly faster than the speed of sound. In fact, the Con corde had a take-off speed of 250 mph and a cruising speed of 1,340 mph. Depending on the temperature of the atmosphere, the speed of sound is about 760 mph, or 1100 feet per second.

The rec center space was nicely decorated with blue painter's tape X spots across the floor, 10 feet apart. Then before we started, we got a little talk.

The senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. Their goal: to deter mine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we're all breathing on one another. Find more room, we'd said, room to spread out.

There was a knowing nod from the coach and the ad monishment: "We'll be taking this nice and easy. Do not push yourselves. If you need to stop and rest, then do that. Nobody will judge you." He cast a fierce look around the room as he said that.

Hands went up, because, yes, we wanted more of this. We each took a handout at the door as we left, instruc tions for doing these exercises at home in case we didn't like the rec center setup. But I have a feeling we're all going to show up next week. It's the first bit of normal in two years. at the Rec Center

The routine the coach put us through was a perfect combination of nearly everything, starting with mild stretching, moving into a few minutes of yoga poses, some cha-cha steps, a few ballet moves, leg lifts, toe touches and more.

Hands went up.

During our cool down (although we hadn't actually worked up a sweat) the coach inquired: "How many want to do this again? Twice a week, same time."

"How many of you haven't taken an exercise class in two years?" asked the too-young male exercise coach we'd never met before.

Hence, the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class).
