SUMMER OLYMPICS (cont'd):

• Although Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece, the first modern Olympic Games were the Summer Olympics held in 1896, appropriately held in Athens, Greece. The modern games have only been cancelled three times – the 1916 games because of World War I -- and the 1940 and 1944 games because of World War II. • One city, London, has hosted the Summer Games three times – in 1908, 1948, and 2012. The Games have been held in the United States four times in three different cities – St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and Atlanta in 1996.

www.egfgunclub.org

• Only five countries have been represented at every modern Summer Olympics – Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and Australia. • For decades, the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year. That changed after 1992, the last time they were scheduled as such. Since that time, the two Olympiads are staggered two years apart. equestrian Ian Millar has appeared in Let’s play dirty.• Canadian more Olympic Games than any other athlete.

• Swimmer Michael Phelps has won more Olympic medals than any other athlete, with a total of 22 won in three Olympiads. He is also the record-holder for most golds at 18. Up until 2008, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz held the record for the most golds at any single Olympic Games, with seven first-place finishes at the 1972 Games in Munich. Phelps broke that record at the 2008 Games in Beijing. ...continued

SUMMER OLYMPICS (cont'd): • The only athlete in any sport to win the same Olympic event six times was Hungarian Aladar Gerevich, who competed in fencing. His first trip to the Olympics was to the 1932 Los Angeles Games at age 22, where he captured his first gold medal. He repeated his feat in 1936. After World War II, Gerevich won two golds in London in 1948, and in Helsinki’s 1952 Games, he won one of each, gold, silver, and bronze. Another gold followed in 1956. His final Olympic appearance was at the 1960 Games in Rome, when he was 50 years old, achieving his final gold. Oddly enough, Gerevich’s wife, son, and father-in-law were also Olympic medalists. • Only one person has won gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. In 1920, American Eddie Eagan was the light heavyweight boxing champ in Antwerp, Belgium. Although he entered the ring again in 1924 at the Paris Summer Games, he failed to get a medal. In 1932, at age 35, Eagan was a member of the fourman bobsled team at the Lake Placid Games. He had just taken up the sport three weeks before the Olympics, but achieved a gold medal. Eagan went on to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II, after which he became an attorney, serving as southern New York’s assistant district attorney.

He took silver in 1920. • The 1900 and 1904 Games included the game of golf, which, after an absence of 112 years, returns to the Rio Games this year, featuring an 18-hole course. ...continued

SUMMER OLYMPICS (cont'd):

• British equestrian Lorna Johnstone competed at the 1972 Olympics at age 70, the oldest woman to date. Danish swimmer Inge Sorenson took home a bronze medal from the 1936 Berlin Games at age 12, the youngest medalist ever in an individual event. To compete in the Rio Games, competitors must have been born before January 1, 2003. • The 1900 Summer Games in Paris featured a rather bizarre event, that of pigeon shooting, the only time that animals were killed on purpose in an Olympic event. The winner, a Belgian marksman, bagged 21 out of the 300 birds released. It was the first, last, and only time the event was on the roster. The 1900 Games also marked the first time women were allowed to compete. Another one-time-only event, croquet, was held for women, but proved quite unpopular, with only one spectator purchasing a ticket. It was also the year that the ancient tug-of-war was brought back, a contest that required two teams of eight men, each attempting to drag the other for a distance of 6 feet within five minutes. The tug-of-war remained an event through 1920. • At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, the referee docked Korean boxer Byun Jong-Li two points for head-butting his opponent. When a brawl ensued after the final results favored his opponent, the Korean head coach punched the ref. Byun Jong-Li then staged a sit-down strike protesting his loss, sitting on the floor of the boxing ring for 67 minutes. Officials turned out the lights, leaving the boxer in the dark. • When an athlete wins a gold medal, he or she doesn’t really win a “gold” medal. Olympic medals haven’t been made of solid gold since Stockholm, Sweden’s 1912 Olympics. Today, they’re really silver with gold plating.

• Although most of the many types of skunks are black and white, their white fur varies in pattern from striped to spotted to swirled. The striped variety is the most common and lives everywhere on the continent from the southern half of Canada to northern Mexico. The least common are the hooded and hog-nosed species, native to parts of the midwestern and southeastern parts of the United States, and Mexico. • Skunks are omnivorous, consuming both plants and animals, depending on what’s available. They’ll eat insects, earthworms, grubs, rodents, lizards, frogs, snakes, birds, moles, but also berries, roots, leaves, grasses, and nuts. They are true scavengers, though, and are very willing to dine on whatever you’ve left in your trash can. Unfortunately, their strong forefeet and long nails, which assist them in digging for food, also wreak havoc in lawns, gardens, and golf courses. • Typically, skunks don’t make their own homes, rather, they nest in burrows created by other animals. They also don’t mind hollow logs or abandoned buildings.

• Although a skunk can live up to seven years in the wild, most only live about a year. Their predators include coyotes, bobcats, and owls. Females birth between 2 and 10 babies a year. Those babies will stay with their mother in the nest for about two months before they head out to scavenge on their own. They don’t travel far during their lifetime, generally staying within an area of 200 acres. • A full-grown skunk will weigh between 7 and 14 lbs. • You may have heard that if your pet has been sprayed by a skunk, you should bathe it in tomato juice. The Humane Society says that this method not only requires massive amounts of juice, it’s only marginally effective. They recommend a paste of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid.

• Baby skunks, called kits, are born blind and their sight doesn’t improve by much as they grow. Their eyesight is very poor – they can only see objects about 10 feet away, which explains why so many of them end up as roadkill. Although their vision is bad, their senses of smell and hearing are excellent.

• The skunk can blast an offender as far as 10 feet away, with two glands that can shoot in different directions. The odor can be smelled by the human nose a mile downwind.

Answer

Everybody knows the main characteristic of skunks – their smell! But what are the other facts about this smelly polecat? Follow along and learn!

• The skunk’s smelly spray is a yellow oil liquid containing sulfuric acid that is produced by the glands under its tail. While the spray is a wellknown method of defense, it’s not what the animal uses first. Initially, it will growl, spit, fluff its fur, shake its tail, and stamp on the ground in an effort to defend itself or its young, and will only use the spray as a last resort. The animal actually hesitates to use its spray, as it only has enough for five or six uses, and it takes 10 days to produce another supply.

West Nile virus has been identified in Grand Forks

WEST NILE VIRUS RISK FACTORS West Nile virus (WNV) is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito most common for transmitting this virus is one that is widespread throughout the Grand Forks region. This mosquito does not discriminate. People of all ages are susceptible to WNV infection, but the elderly are at higher risk for developing the more severe form of this disease (neuroinvasive illness). Children infected with WNV generally show no symptoms or may have a mild fever.

Risk factors for West Nile virus: • Time of year – The majority of WNV cases occur from July – September. • Geographic region – The Dakotas have reported some of the highest cases per capita in the United States. • Time spent outdoors not wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellent – If you work or spend a lot of time outdoors (golfing, gardening, hunting, etc.), you’re at a higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. • Proximity – If you live in an area where WNV has already been identified or near mosquito larval habitat. • If you have a weakened immune system. The best way to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites. • Use mosquito-repellent products containing DEET. • Wear long sleeves and pants. • Eliminate any standing water from your property, such as trash bins, plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, etc.

Repellents: Still One of the Best Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites Unfortunately, there’s no easy solution to controlling mosquitoes. The more rain and standing water we have, the more mosquito habitat available for those pesky critters. The start of the 2014 mosquito season has been hot and wet thereby producing a healthy hatch of skeeters. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites is essential to keeping the mosquito population in check. When the adult mosquito population seems unbearable, turn to one of the best prevention methods available…a can of OFF! Mosquito repellents with DEET are safe and very effective when applied according to the label. They’ve even improved many of these products so they go on dry, not oily. Don’t let these pesky critters win the outdoor battle this summer. Eliminate any standing water on your property and apply repellents with DEET when outdoors.

• “When making a grilled cheese sandwich, use room-temperature cheese. Because it’s not cold, it will melt evenly and more quickly, so you won’t burn the bread. For an extra little something, try sprinkling the grilled outsides with a tiny dash of sugar. Yum!” — A.J. in Florida • When cooking quinoa, brown rice or other grains, use broth — not water. It makes a world of difference in the flavor. • “Serving warm foods that cool quickly? Try warming your dishes in the oven at 200 F for five minutes or so before serving. We do this at our house when we make pancakes, but you can do it anytime the meal warrants it, or to be fancy if you have company. If your dishes are microwavable, they should be fine.” — L.C. in Texas • The ranger at the campsite we just stayed at told us that adding a sage bundle to the campfire will help keep bugs away. — T.W. in Missouri • Look for outdoor hanging planters — particularly the wall-mounted ones — for use inside the house. They can be used to store stuffed animals in a child’s bedroom up off the floor. • Toothpaste makes an excellent cleaning abrasive. It’s gentle enough for some delicate materials; just rub a little on the stained area and wipe away. Repeat if necessary. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

NUGGETS OF KNOWLEDGE

During the Olympics' Opening Ceremony Parade of Nations, Greece is always first in the marching order, and the hosting nation is always last.

The official mascot of the 2016 Summer Olympics is Vinicius, named after Brazilian poet and musician Vinicius de Moraes. The mascot symbolizes a blend of "Brazilian wildlife with the intelligence of cats, the agility of monkeys, and the grace of birds."

X marks the spot! This week, Tidbits “x-amines” words beginning with the letter X. • The prefix xeno-, taken from the Greek language, refers to something that is strange, foreign, or different. It makes sense that a xenophobe is a person who is fearful of strangers or foreigners. • In 1937, an American law student named Chester Carlson invented a copying process based on electrostatic energy. Because the process was called xerography, which translates from the Greek for “dry writing,” Carlson’s patent application used the word “Xerox” as the name of his new creation. Carlson licensed his invention to the Haloid Photographic Company, founded in 1906, a firm that manufactured photographic paper and equipment. In 1958, the company name was changed to Haloid Xerox, and by 1961, was known simply as the Xerox Corporation. By the time Carlson died in 1968, he had donated over $150 million to various charities. • An engraving on wood or a print made from this engraving is known as a xylograph. The same root translates to the word xylophagous, which indicates a species that feeds on wood. • Wooden bars that are struck by mallets make up the musical instrument known as the xylophone. Each bar, often made of rosewood, is tuned to a pitch of the musical scale. Several cultures claim to be the originator of the instrument, with one explanation that it came to Africa around 500 A.D., brought by Polynesians. Other evidence indicates a type of xylophone from 2000 B.C. in ancient China. The word is a combination of Greek words, xylon, meaning “wood,” and phone, meaning “sound.”
