Here in North America, autumn is defined as “the period between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice.” Learn more about this beautiful season and its events as Tidbits examines the month of October. ● The first day of Autumn occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving south, either on September 22nd or September 23rd. On that day, the light and dark hours are exactly the same length, hence, the term “equinox.” Autumn ends with the winter solstice, December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. ● rench word autompne. “October” takes its name from the Latin, meaning “eighth month.” Under the old Roman calendar, when March was the first month of the year, October was in fact the eighth month. ● We all love to see the leaves change in the Fall. The bright foliage is a byproduct of chemical changes in a tree as it begins to go dormant for the colder weather. Leaves actually have just as much yellow pigment during July as they do in October. But in July, the darker green pigment, chlorophyll, masks the yellow xanthophyll. As sunlight decreases, a tree stops producing chlorophyll, and the other colors begin to show through. turn the page for more

FALL FACTS (continued) ● When a period of unseasonably warm weather occurs in October, we call it Indian Summer. The nights are cool and may bring frost, but the days are sunny and clear with warm temperatures. The National Weather Service defines it as temps above 70 degrees F. (21 C) following a hard frost. ● The Peanuts comic strip debuted in seven newspapers in October, 1950. It grew in size until it was featured in more than 2,600 papers in 75 countries, translated into 21 languages. Running continuously until February, 2000, with a total of 17,897 strips in all, it’s considered the most popular and influential comic strip in history. ● The month of October marked the premiere of several familiar television series “back in the day.” I Love Lucy aired for the first time in 1951. Captain Kangaroo and The Mickey Mouse Club debuted in 1955, and Leave It to Beaver came along two years later. Longtime favorite The Andy Griffith Show hit our TV screens in 1960. In more recent years, Saturday Night Live, now in its 38th season, premiered in October, 1975, with George Carlin as the first guest host. ● It took 14 years of grueling labor to carve the busts of four U.S. Presidents into the granite hillside in South Dakota’s Black Hills. Begun in 1927 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, 60-ft. (18 m) busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham were painstakingly created. The initial objective was to feature carvings from head to waist, but lack of funding abbreviated the project. The task was completed in October of 1941. Unfortunately, Borglum passed away in March of that year, but his son Lincoln brought the project to completion.

Building a Pet First-Aid Kit DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read in a guide to cutting dogs' toenails that "styptic" will stop bleeding if you cut their paws. What is that, and where do I get it? -Perry in Dallas DEAR PERRY: Styptic powder can be used on small nicks and tiny cuts to stop bleeding and reduce pain. That's helpful when trimming pets' toenails, which can be a traumatic experience for them, especially if you should trim a little too far up the nail and accidentally cut the quick. The powder is applied with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Most owners keep it right next to them as they trim their pets' nails, so it can be applied immediately. In fact, styptic powder should be an essential part of something every pet owner should have: an easy-to-access first-aid kit for their pets. You don't have to buy a complete kit; you can assemble a few key items and store them in a tightly sealed plastic container.
In addition to the powder, a pet first-aid kit should have gauze and tape, a small bar of soap, a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes, Benadryl (plain, with no ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cotton balls and disinfecting hand wash (for you). Its main purpose is to treat small cuts and scrapes, but you can add other items that you think are essential, including the veterinarian's phone number, extra identification tags, copies of your pet's shot records and a spare leash. More ideas can be found at the Humane Society of the United States' website. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Did you know mosquitos can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don't? Find out more in my new book, "Fighting Fleas," available now.

FALL FACTS (continued) ● Americans like to think that North America’s first Thanksgiving was in the 1620s in Plymouth, Massachusetts. But the Canadians had their first Thanksgiving in 1578, 42 years before the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower. English explorer Martin Frobisher landed in Newfoundland in 1578 and held a feast of thanks for his safe arrival in the New World. Canada declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1879, but its date changed several times before 1957, when it was officially declared to be the second Monday in October. ● The Chinese thanksgiving celebration is known as the Moon Festival and frequently lands in October. It’s held on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese calendar, during the full moon, in gratitude for the harvest. This Chinese ritual has been observed since the Shang Dynasty, as early as 1200 B.C., and includes evening offerings to the moon, as the ancient Chinese believed the moon was source of rejuvenation. ● In October of 1908, Henry Ford introduced his Model T to the nation. With a price of $825, over 10,000 were sold that first year. In 1912, the price dropped to $575, and sales skyrocketed. In the first 18 years of projection, sales were upwards of 15 million. ● The final piece of the St. Louis Arch was put into place in October, 1965. It marked the end of two-and-a-half years of construction at a cost of $13 million ($94.7 million in today’s money). The arch was built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States. Situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, at 630 feet (192 m), it’s the tallest manmade monument in America and the world’s tallest arch. If you’re interested in climbing to the top, prepare yourself for 1,076 steps.

● On Oct. 12, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus reaches the New World. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world's size. The expedition probably first landed at Watling Island in the Bahamas. Columbus later sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China. ● On Oct. 10, 1845, The United States Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Md., with 50 midshipmen students and seven professors. Known as the Naval School until 1850, the curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy and French. ● On Oct. 8, 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills hundreds of people, destroys 17,450 buildings and leaves 100,000 homeless. Legend has it that the fire started when a cow kicked over a lantern in the O'Leary barn. ● On Oct. 9, 1936, harnessing the power of the mighty Colorado River, the Hoover Dam begins sending electricity over 266 miles of transmission lines to Los Angeles. The central reason for the dam, however, was the collection, preservation and distribution of water. ● On Oct. 7, 1943, Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 96 Americans POWs, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with U.S. forces. The execution of those POWs remains one of the more brutal episodes of the war in the Pacific. ● On Oct. 13, 1953, the world's first art museum on wheels, the Artmobile, opens in Fredericksburg, Va., carrying 16 paintings by 15th- and 16th-century masters. Today, there are dozens of Artmobile-inspired museums on wheels in cities and towns across the United States and around the world. ● On Oct. 11, 1975, "Saturday Night Live," a topical comedy sketch show featuring Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman, makes its debut on NBC. It would go on to become the longest-running, highest-rated show on late-night television.

● In medieval times in Great Britain, those accused of a crime could prove their innocence (or guilt) in trial by battle. This law was unused and nearly forgotten for centuries. Then, in 1817, a man named Abraham Thornton was charged with murder in the death of a young woman named Mary Ashford. The evidence against Thornton was nearly overwhelming, but he claimed the right to trial by battle against his accuser. Since the law was still on the books, the court decided it had no choice but to grant his request. Thornton's accuser was William Ashford, the victim's brother, but since he declined to appear on the field of battle, Thornton was freed. Shortly thereafter, trail by battle was officially abolished in the country. ● Cats can bark, too. ● With 1.45 million lightning strikes per year, Florida experiences more lightning than any other state in the country. However, if those survey respondents had to have one parent move in with them, two out of three would choose Mom over Dad. He was first elected in 1940 and served through the critical World War II years. He was re-elected at age 77, and served another four years. Despite a severe speech impediment, he triumphed in politics, entering that domain at age 26. He’s the only British Prime Minister in history to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1953), and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. ● In October of 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. became the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. Just 35 years old, his efforts at combating racial inequality earned him the honor. He turned over his prize money of $54,123 for the furtherance of the civil rights movement. ● The Beach Boys released “Good Vibrations” on October 10, 1966, and it quickly became the group’s third number hit. (“I Get Around” and “Help Me, Rhonda” were the first two.) The single sold over 230,000 copies during the first four days after its released. Rolling Stone magazine lists the tune as Number Six on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” ● Rowland Macy opened his “fancy dry goods” store in October, 1858 on New York’s Sixth Avenue. First-day sales totaled $11.08, about $293.47 in 2013 currency. Macy’s became the first department store to have an in-store Santa for the Christmas season in 1862. Mildred Ella Didrikson’s road to professional athlete fame began when she was 17 years old, when she read about the upcoming 1928 Olympics in her father’s newspaper. That day she made it her goal to one day compete in track and field at the Olympics. Let’s follow the journey of this talented and versatile athlete. ● Mildred was a natural-born athlete, playing baseball with the neighborhood boys. Because she hit so many home runs, they gave her the nickname “Babe” after slugger Babe Ruth. There was hardly a sport in which she didn’t excel – baseball, basketball, diving, and track and field. After setting her Olympic goal, Babe practiced hurdles by jumping over hedges in her Texas neighborhood. ● When the 1932 Olympics rolled around, the 21-year-old Babe qualified in five events. Unfortunately, at that time, women were only allowed to compete in three. In her three events, she took the gold medal for javelin and the 80-meter hurdles, both with new world records, and the silver for the high jump. ● Although Babe was a fine Olympic athlete, as well as achieving All-American status in basketball, she’s probably best known for her achievements in the world of golf. She took up golf the year after her Olympic success, practicing eight to ten hours a day, hitting over a thousand balls daily. She entered ladies’ golf tournaments, but was soon judged a pro because she had given advertising endorsements, and was disqualified. At the time, there was no pro golf tour for women. She entered a particular men’s tournament in 1938, and was paired with a professional wrestler named George Zaharias. He became her husband 11 months later. ● With the financial security George offered, Babe was able to give up endorsements and re-establish amateur status. In order to do so, she had to play no other sports for three years. Once she was an amateur again, she dominated golf with victory after victory. She won 17 straight women’s amateur tournaments, a feat yet to be equaled. She became the first American woman to win the British Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament. ● In 1949, Babe became a founding member of the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association. She held the position of president of the organization from its second year through the remainder of her life.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 BABE DIDRIKSON ZAHARIAS (continued) ● By 1950, Babe Zaharias had won every golf title available. Her amateur and professional triumphs totaled 82 championships. Just three years later at age 42, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Three months after colostomy surgery, she was back, bravely wearing a colostomy bag on the course. And she continued to win tournaments! However, unbeknownst to Babe, the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Her final tournament was the 1955 Peach Blossom Open. The following year, cancer claimed her life at age 45. ● Babe remains the only woman to qualify for the Los Angeles Open, a men’s tournament, in 1938. Sports Illustrated named her the Female Athlete of the 20th Century in individual sports. In 1975, a film based on her life was made, with actress Susan Clark in the lead role and former Detroit Lions football great Alex Karras in the role of George. The couple met during the production and were later married.
ALL ABOUT WHEAT More farmland is devoted to wheat than any other food crop. What better time than harvest season to learn something new about it? ● Evidence points to the first cultivation of wheat in the Tigris and Euphrates River valley, near present-day Iraq. In the U.S., it was first planted in the early 1600s in Massachusetts. Scottish settlers brought wheat to Canada in 1812, planting their first winter wheat in August of that year. ● Wheat is the most common cereal grain used in food. About 75% of all U.S. grain products are made from wheat flour. Out of the 42 U.S. states that grow wheat, Kansas produces the most, followed closely by North Dakota. Montana and Oklahoma also rank high in acreage planted.

WHEAT (continued) ● In the U.S. over 60 million acres of land are planted in wheat, producing about 2.5 billion bushels. But that’s far from the world’s largest producer. China and India both outrank the U.S. in wheat cultivation. ● One acre yields an average of 38 bushels. One bushel of wheat weighs about 60 pounds (27.2 kg), and contains about a million individual kernels. Approximately 42 pounds (19 kg) of white flour can be produced from one bushel or 60 pounds of whole wheat flour. A bushel can also be used to make 42 loaves of white bread or 42 pounds of pasta. If you’d rather eat cereal, one bushel will make about 45 24-oz. (680 g.) boxes of wheat flake cereal. ● There are six main classes of wheat, based on hardness, color, and time of planting – hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, durum hard white, and soft white. ● Soft red winter wheat is cultivated primarily in the Midwestern U.S., with Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois as leaders. There is less protein in soft red wheat, making it a softer texture for use in cakes, pastries, and biscuits. The soft white wheat is planted in the Northwest – Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Shredded and puffed breakfast foods are the primary products. ● Durum wheat is the firmest of all wheats and its kernels are larger than those of the others. It has a high protein and gluten strength, and its density makes it perfect for the manufacture of pasta. Most of this exceptionally hard wheat is grown in North Dakota, where 28% of the state’s 30,000 farms grown durum, producing twothirds of the nation’s supply. ● When durum wheat is coarsely ground to a sugar-like texture, it becomes what is known as semolina, the principal raw ingredient in pasta. The National Pasta Association tells us that if you were to eat pasta three times a week, it would take you 70 weeks to eat all the pasta produced from just one bushel of durum. ● Those people suffering from Celiac Disease are those whose digestive systems cannot tolerate the gluten in wheat. When they eat it, their immune system responds by damaging the lining of the small intestine, inhibiting the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. They might experience joint pain, anemia, osteoporosis, seizures, depression, or a severe skin rash from ingesting wheat. Pasta is still an option for these individuals in the form of a gluten-free product made from brown rice, corn, quinoa, potatoes, and soybeans.

Q: I recently acquired a coal chute that is marked "Majestic." I'd like to know the value of it. -M.M.M., Decatur, Ill. A: Most coal chutes sell in the $25 to $50 range depending on condition and design. Q: I have inherited a small cigar case that was handed out as a premium at the St. Louis World's Fair. It is embossed with an image of the Palace of Transportation. It is in fairly good condition. -- Bill, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I found your cigar case referenced in the definitive book about the mementos and memorabilia from the Fair, namely "1904 St. Louis World's Fair" by the late Robert L. Hendershott. According to this guide, your case is valued in the $100 to $200 range. Q: I was fascinated by the California Raisins characters and wonder if the items I have are collectible. I have several key chains, a board game, a plush pillow and a coffee mug. -- Steve, Austin, Texas A: The California Raisins were introduced in a TV commercial campaign in 1986. Originally there were four characters, but soon more than 21 designs had been added. Most of the items are dated. Typical values are Hip Guitarist keychain, $65; plush pillow of Raisin figure, $10; beach towel, $15; and lunch box, $25. Q: At a recent yard sale, I purchased a Roseville bowl in the Rozane pattern. It has a design that features floral and leaf patterns in pale green. When was it made, and how much do you think it is worth? -- Susan, Tyler, Texas A: According to Warman's Roseville Pottery by Mark F. Moran, your bowl is probably worth about $150 and was produced in 1917. There was a later line, also called Rozane, featuring a sleek, modern look in bright colors, including blue, green and terra cotta.

A: Pulling the vines away from the brick surface might cause some of the mortar to be pulled away with them. The tendrils can be pretty tenacious. Instead, cut the vines away from the surface of the brick. Gather up the parts that fall away along with the remainder of the plant. Stems and tendrils that stay attached should be left alone until they're completely dry and shriveled up, then scrub them away with a stiff bristled brush and soapy water. If some mortar crumbles away during this process, note the damaged area. This should be repaired as soon as possible after the brick is cleared of vines, using a process called tuckpointing. Tuckpointing can sound a bit complicated, but it's really worth it to learn the process for small patch jobs. It can save you hundreds of dollars in masonry repairs and potentially thousands of dollars by protecting your house from water entering via the damaged mortar. Head to the home-improvement store. You'll need to buy a concrete-fortified mortar mix (just enough for a smaller patch job), a mortar pigment to match the existing mortar color, a trowel and a jointing tool. If you don't already have them, you also should get a hammer, masonry chisel and a stiff brush. Finally, ask for a grout bag. This is a cheaper alternative to common masonry tools like a joint filler and pointing tool. It works just like an icing bag used for cake decorating, only larger. Clean the damaged area with a stiff brush. If more mortar crumbles, don't worry. You want to remove as much of the loose mortar as possible, to at least 1/4 inch deep. Mix up the mortar and pigment in a sturdy bucket, to the consistency given on the instructions on the bag (or until it just slides off the trowel). Fill the grout bag about half full of the mixture. Wipe the area to be repaired with a wet rag or wet brush. Cut off the pointed end of the grout bag and twist the wide end tightly. Pipe the mortar mix along the damaged area, getting as deep into the groove as you can. Smooth the newly piped-in joint with the jointing tool. Repeat the process, piping in mortar and smoothing down, until the new mortar is flush with the old mortar joint. Finish the job by brushing away excess mortar with a stiff bristle brush. Finally, let the repair area dry for several days. Unlike other types of repairs, you want to slow the drying time -- this allows the mortar to bond more securely to the brick and the older mortar. Either spritz with water a few times a day, or cover the area with damp rags for several days. HOME TIP: Old paint drips or spills on brick can often be scrubbed away; newer paint can be cleaned off with a solution of trisodium phosphate and water. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

What's Good About Good Cholesterol
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a yearly checkup with a number of blood tests. All has been well for a number of years, except for my HDL cholesterol. I am a 62-year-old woman, and my HDL has hovered around 39. I watch my diet carefully, exercise daily and have taken and am still taking niacin, but the HDL refuses to budge. My total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol are fine. What should I do? -- L.Y. ANSWER: HDL cholesterol is the so-called good cholesterol. It's believed to remove cholesterol from the walls of arteries and take it to the liver for disposal. For women, HDL cholesterol ought to be 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) or higher. For men, the target is 40 (1.04) or higher. British researchers have punctured the HDL balloon. They say that HDL cholesterol doesn't protect the heart and that its benefits have been greatly overblown. HDL is a complicated substance, composed of a variety of components, each having different and often opposing effects. The full extent of how it figures into arteryhardening and heart disease hasn't been completely explained. If you were my patient, I'd tell you to forget your HDL cholesterol. You've done everything you can to raise it, but it hasn't budged. More importantly, your total cholesterol and bad cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, are at
favorable levels. The main attention should be directed to these cholesterol components. If your doctor hasn't said you need to be strict about HDL cholesterol, don't pay so much attention to it. The booklet on cholesterol details its effect on the body and the heart. It does not contain this information on HDL cholesterol, however. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had a persistent cough. My primary-care physician thought I was allergic to Old Spice aftershave lotion, so my husband stopped using it, to no avail. Then she thought it might be acid reflux, and put me on medicine that did nothing. She sent me to a specialist, who took chest X-rays and all that good stuff. He gave me a cough medicine with a tiny bit of codeine in it. He said my cough would stop shortly. It didn't. He sent me to an ear, nose and throat doctor. The first question he asked was what the humidity of our house was. It runs around 40 percent to 45 percent. He told me to get it up to 50 percent to 75 percent. We did, and my cough left in four days. It took three years and four doctors before I learned what was really wrong. I hope you can pass this along to the person with a chronic cough. -- R.G. ANSWER: A dry environment is not often thought of as a cause of cough. I'm happy the ENT doctor gave you and me the tip. The three major causes of a persistent cough are asthma, postnasal drip and gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn). R.G has alerted us to think of other possibilities.

Gum-Wrapper Beads on a Shoestring The big kids are off to school and the younger ones are looking for their own fun. Here's the antidote. Look around your home with your kids, and find things that could, with a little imagination, be used for something other than their intended use. Talk about what you can do with the items, then get creating. Here's a fun idea to get the kids started. Save foil liners from sticks of gum, root in the food cupboard for rigatoni noodles, and then grab some household glue, an old magazine and yesterday's newspaper. What do they all have in common? Beads! Here are two bead-making ideas for creative fun and recycled "style." Gum-Wrapper Rigatoni Beads Save eight to 10 standard-size (1 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inch) foil wrappers from sticks of gum, such as Wrigley's Extra gum. Spread them out flat on your work surface. To make each bead, dab or lightly brush a small amount of household glue on the paper side of a foil wrapper. Set a large 1 1/2 inch long uncooked rigatoni noodle on one short end of the wrapper, then roll and wrap the paper around the noodle. Add a bit more glue to the overlapping side and tuck the edges inside. Press around the noodle to reveal its pattern. Continue covering eight to 10 noodles. Let dry. String the beads on a thick shoestring, with wooden beads between the gum-wrapper beads. A bright-red shoestring with red wooden beads looks especially nice with the silver beads. Tie a knot, and it's ready to wear for a necklace. Traditional Paper Beads Tear out illustrated pages from a magazine or save a page from the Sunday comics in your newspaper. Cut the paper into long, narrow triangles approximately 5 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide at the broad end. To form each bead, carefully roll the triangle around a pencil, beginning with the broad end of the triangle and ending with the pointed end. Glue the point to the rolled paper. Remove the pencil. Continue making enough beads for a necklace. String the paper beads on yarn, thin ribbon or string.

What started as a pilot program at the University of South Florida in 2009 to help veterans make the transition from the military to academics now has expanded to VetSuccess centers on 94 campuses across the country. Part of the VetSuccess program includes having Department of Veterans Affairs vocational rehab counselors and a Vet Center coordinator right on the campus. Those counselors keep in touch with both VA Vet Centers and the other medical facilities where they can refer veterans for medical services and give help in applying for veterans benefits. The schools themselves are in favor of the arrangement and even provide space on the campus. The schools are chosen because of their proximity to other VA facilities, such as a regional offices, vocational rehab centers, employment services offices, medical centers or Vet centers. The fact that the pilot program has grown by to more than 90 schools in four years is a testament to its success. If you've considered going back to school but haven't because of your comfort level in a civilian or academic setting, call the counselors at your school of choice. Go in for a talk and see what types of help they can offer you. They'll be able to walk you through the benefits you could get as a student. Ask about peer-to-peer counseling, and let them hook you up with veterans who've been where you are. You'll be able to ask your questions and get advice about what steps you need to take to have the best chance of success. For more info on the program, go online to www. vetsuccess.gov or call 1-800-827-1000. To get a head start on what kind of financial help you can get, go online to www.va.gov and search for education benefits.

High-Tech Relief for Winter Blues Many of us don't want to do too much outdoors during cold weather, but there are plenty of ways to stay busy. High-tech devices can come to the rescue! Here are a few ideas: --Learn a foreign language online. Check OpenCulture. com and look for courses developed by Yale or Carnegie Mellon. Look at www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ if you want to brush up on a language you already know. This one is very well done with videos. Do the lessons with a friend. --Learn how a new electronic gadget works. There are many to choose from. I'm surprised, as are those who know me, but I'm enjoying my Kindle, an e-reader. I'm a diehard book lover, but I'm running out of space for more shelves. The Kindle holds thousands of books, is easy to carry, the text is expandable to huge sizes if necessary, the battery lasts a long time, and on Amazon.com there are lots of free books to get started. To enjoy books on an electronic device, it doesn't need to be a Kindle. Amazon has free apps (little software applications) for a number of e-reader devices, such as iPad and Android tablets. Check your local library, too, for free book lending on your e-reader. It might even have devices you can check out and sample. --If you have a Roku that streams programs to your television, you might have missed the hundreds of free channels available. Look in the channel store for Pub-D-Hub for vintage commercials, movies, cartoons and more. Check the Lecture Kings channel for course seminars from Yale University and Missouri State, as well as audio books of the classics. Sit in on recorded seminars on the MIT Open Courseware channel. Once you get started, you might even decide to try other high-tech toys!

You Are Here For a Reason You were no accident. You’re not the descendent of an ape nor will you one day return to earth as a butterfly, a Billy goat, or a British Lord or Lady. You’re here at a specific time living in a specific place with a specific mission to accomplish. Your life has meaning – you are here for a reason. You already know this is true. Deep inside the depths of your soul you sense an eternal-ness, an awareness of destiny, a feeling that you really are somebody very unique in the 10,000 year history of humankind. You are right, and modern science agrees with you! With the discovery of the complexity of DNA, scientists consistently give testimony in courts declaring that an individual’s DNA is absolute evidence of that person’s unique identity. If you and I really are something special, why do we spend so much of our time slaving away just to eke out a living? Why are most people doing so little to fulfill their destiny? Two reasons: First of all, most people don’t seek meaning in life. They are content to let life happen to them rather than take the effort to make something meaningful out of each day, week or month. Significance comes only to those who seek it.

Second, most people are self-centered and interested only in satisfying their own personal wants and needs. That’s how they miss discovering their own personal usefulness. They want to be served rather than serve so they become takers rather than givers, spectators rather than participants, and end up living their lives as victims rather than victors. But not you! You want more from life. You want to fulfill your destiny. You want to be that someone special you know God has created you to be. So start today by demanding answers to life’s two greatest questions: “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” Your answers to those questions are found deep within your own soul and in quiet, persistent reflection. Discovering your purpose is a very individual task worthy of every thought, prayer and effort you can give. Here are a few questions that will help you find the answers: What do you love? What do you feel passionate about? What makes you cry, or laugh, or frown? What do you do well? What have you done that makes you happy? What problem can you solve, what need can you meet, what hurt can you heal? When you find your answer – you will know why you are so very special.
