TIDBITS® WEARS A

NECKTIE

The average American businessman spends four hours a year tying his tie. Come along with Tidbits as we find out facts behind the tradition.

Bright White... Great for Farm Buildings or Garage Linings

THE WHYS OF TIES ● Wearing bits of cloth around the neck dates back to time immemorial. In the days before laundromats were invented, strips of cloth were worn around the neck because it kept the collar of the shirt from getting dirty. It was far easier to wash a narrow strip of cloth than it was to wash the shirt. Bibs tied around the neck were worn at mealtimes to protect the shirt from spills. In the summer, a wet cloth around the neck kept the body cool. In the winter, it kept the body warm. Men sporting full body armor wore neck cloths to pad their neck from the hard metal. Cloths were worn around the neck to prevent sweat from running down the shirt, or to keep vocal cords warm. Later, strips of cloth tied around the neck became a symbol of class, rank, or station, whether by soldiers or students. FAST FACT ● Italian artist Enrico Baj creates works of art out of neckties by dipping them in plastic or gluing them to canvas. He comments, “Ties are a symbol of vanity and ostentation, rather like medals and decorations, although every so often I too am forced to wear one.” turn the page for more!

TIES THROUGH HISTORY ● China’s first emperor, Qin Shih-huangdi, lived in 200 B.C. When he died he was buried in an underground mausoleum surrounded by 7,500 sculptured terra cotta soldiers. The tomb was uncovered in 1974. Archaeologists found that many of the individually carved soldiers sported knotted neck cloths-- the first known instance of the use of neckties. ● In the mid-1600s, a crack regiment of soldiers from Croatia visited Paris to celebrate their recent victory over Turkey. The soldiers held court with King Louis XIV, who was a fashion nut. For the occasion, each of the soldiers had tied a brightly colored scarf around their necks. Louis XIV liked the look and began wearing silk neck cloths himself, and the fashion rapidly spread. The French word for Croatia was ‘cravate,’ giving us today’s cravat. ● In 1715, another kind of neckwear, called “stocks” made its appearance. The term referred to a leather collar, laced at the back, worn by soldiers to help keep their head held high in a military bearing. The leather stock also offered the wearer some protection to the major blood vessels of the neck from the sharp edge of a sword or the tip of a bayonet. ● In England men used to wear a shirt collar which they tied together with string to keep the draft out. Eventually the string became larger and more elaborate, until it was a frill. Then the frill became increasingly more elaborate until it was a ruff instead of a frill until, by the time of Henry VIII, the ruff was so large it covered both of the shoulders. ● Neckties came to the forefront of fashion after World War II ended and soldiers returning home felt like dressing up with festive ties. Right after World War II there were over 600 companies making 200 million neckties per year.

No Time for Training DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a new puppy that I've managed to housebreak, but she needs more obedience training. However, I don't have the time to train her. Can I hire a private trainer? -- Nora L., New Haven, Conn. DEAR NORA: While I think that owners who train their dogs themselves get the best results, I also understand that people can't always commit the necessary amount of time to training. This is due to long commutes, tough workdays and not enough "downtime" at home. Most owners can spare an hour a day to play with, walk and train their dog, but often no more than that. This can be frustrating for the owner and the dog, which spent its day cooped up in a kennel cage. In this case, time spent with a professional trainer can be beneficial, as long as the owner follows up on the training at home.

Research the different training programs available in your area. Some trainers may keep your pet at their facility for one to three weeks; others encourage you to drop it off in the morning and pick it up at night during the training period. Others meet with your dog for only a few hours each day. Decide which method is best for your schedule, and check out the trainer thoroughly, including a reference check and a tour of the facility. Compare his or her fees with those of other trainers, and ask for an explanation of different prices. The trainer should be friendly and should readily answer your questions, but also should be firm about your commitment to continuing the dog's training at home. Don't expect the trainer to create a perfect dog. This will be a team effort. Listen to the trainer's instructions and follow them, and you'll have a well-behaved pet.

Welcome to Goose Tips! This is the busiest time of the year for most of us. We have decorations to put up, presents to wrap, visits to Santa, lights to see , and family to see. Whenever possible, I like to give a homemade gift rather than a store bought, but sometimes I just don’t have the time in the kitchen that I’d like. Ironically, the time of year I’d like to cook the most is also the time of year I have the least amount of time to do it. Everyone knows that candies taste better if you let the kids do it. they’re sweeter than us. Getting the kids in the kitchen is important to me, but especially at Christmas. If I’m make something for them to give, I want them to enjoy the happiness and learn the importance of giving something you personally had a hand in making. In my mind this is one of those activities that helps them to grow up with their heads in the right place. Easily turnout Christmas candies in very little time with a low budget. You’ll need: 1 package of chocolate almond bark 36 mini muffin liners 2 cups Rice Crispies Melt almond bark and stir in cereal. Spoon mixture into muffin liners, allow 1 to 2 hours to set. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different Wild Game!

MACARONI & TIES ● Before macaroni was well known, it was considered a specialty. Wealthy Englishmen who traveled to Italy often experienced their first macaroni, and then went home to Britain and began to serve the dish at their tables. Because the food was rare and unusual, the people who served it became known as ‘macaroni’ which meant fancy, uppity, or overly stylish; the type of people who wore fancy hats, big wigs, and white cravats tied in enormous bows. People living in America where there was less money and less fashion wore simpler clothing, and began to make fun of the Macaronis. Thus, when “Yankee Doodle went to London riding on a pony / Stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni” the unfortunate Doodle (German for ‘fool’) was taking on airs and pretending that a feather in his cap would make people think he was an upper class gent. NECKTIE IMPROVEMENTS ● Although a tie may look like a simple piece of cloth, it is actually a complicated piece of sewing joining four different strips of cloth. It was patented by Jesse “Joss” Langsdorf in 1920. Langsdorf, known as the father of the tie, patented the ‘all-weather wrinkle-free’ tie. His patented pattern incorporated slip stitching running down the length of the back of the tie which ensured that the tie would return to its original shape when it was taken off. It also added resilience to the tie and prevented rips. Langsdorf also added various linings to the inside of the tie to increase bulk. One of the linings he used was rubber, thus inventing the supposedly ‘weather-proof’ tie.

● On Dec. 13, 1642, Dutch navigator Abel Tasman becomes the first European explorer to sight the South Pacific island group now known as New Zealand. In his sole attempt to land, several of Tasman's crew were killed by warriors from a South Island tribe, who interpreted the Europeans' exchange of trumpet signals as a prelude to battle. ● On Dec. 9, 1775, the Virginia and North Carolina militias defeat 800 slaves and 200 redcoats serving John Murray, earl of Dunmore and governor of Virginia, at Great Bridge outside Norfolk, ending British royal control of Virginia. ● On Dec. 11, 1872, already appearing as a wellknown figure of the Wild West in popular dime novels, Buffalo Bill Cody makes his first stage appearance in a Chicago-based production of "The Scouts of the Prairie." ● On Dec. 12, 1901, Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi succeeds in sending the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, disproving detractors who told him that the curvature of the earth would limit transmission to 200 miles or less. ● On Dec. 14, 1946, American tennis champion Stan Smith is born in Pasadena, Calif. A three-time AllAmerican at the University of Southern California, Smith captured the NCAA singles title in 1968 and the doubles title in 1967 and 1968. ● On Dec. 10, 1967, a plane carrying soul-music legend Otis Redding crashes into the frigid waters of a small Wisconsin lake 3 miles short of the runway, killing seven of the eight men aboard, including Redding. It's claimed that the cottonwood got its start as a landmark when a quarreling couple, on their wedding night, threw each other's shoes into the branches. This shoe-tossing (for reasons unclear) became a tradition, and the tree gradually became laden with the odd offerings. Travelers these days, though, miss out on the attraction; in late 2010, vandals cut down the tree. But take heart, seekers of the unusual! Shoe trees can be found in 18 other states, ranging from California to New York. ● During the entire presidency of Bill Clinton, he sent two emails.

Researchers at Cornell University set out to discover if the pressure of a tie that’s too tight might interfere with blood flow to the brain and eyes. ● To do this, they had an ophthalmologist study the retinal veins of a number of men. The pulsing of the retinal veins indicates whether or not the blood supply is circulating efficiently. He found that when the tie was half an inch (1.27 cm) smaller than the circumference of the man’s neck, the pulsing was no longer visible. This suggests that blood flow to the retina is decreased. ● Next they decided to find if most men wear their ties too tight. They picked 94 businessmen at random and found that 66% were wearing ties that averaged .2 inches (.48 cm) smaller than their necks. 12% had ties that were half an inch (1.27 cm) too small. ● Now they wanted to find out if decreased blood flow to the retina can impair eyesight. They had men press a button when a blinking light started blinking so fast that it appeared to be a steady beam; and when it slowed down again to become distinguishable blinks. Each man was tested three times: the first and last times with a loose tie, and the second time with a tight tie. It was found that tight neckware slowed down the response times. Furthermore, their speed did not rebound after the tie was loosened. ● The researchers concluded that a too tight tie can impair visual perception and may harm the performance of computer operators, pilots, and others who need good visual discrimination.

WOMEN IN HISTORY: BETTY ANNE WATERS ● Betty Anne Waters was born in 1955, one of nine children in a chaotic household in Ayers, MA. She was close to her brother Kenny. When a neighbor was murdered in 1980, Kenny was questioned because he had a long history of petty infractions. Kenny had an airtight alibi: He’d worked all night at a local diner, and then had gone straight to the courthouse the next morning to face charges of assaulting a cop. Kenny was released. However, more than two years later, he was arrested and charged with the murder. ● The family couldn’t afford a lawyer, but Kenny was certain he’d be exonerated. Yet things soon took a turn for the worse. ● Betty Anne Waters stopped in at the diner to make sure they still had his time card on hand that would prove his alibi. The secretary assured her that yes, the time card was still on hand, because the police had called in order to pick it up. When the trial started, however, the police said that no time card had ever existed. Then, two people testified against Kenny. ● The jury found Kenny guilty. In 1983 he was sentenced to life without parole. He was 29 years old. ● He soon attempted suicide. He begged his sister for help, asking her to become a lawyer so she could help prove his innocence. She promised to do so, as long as he promised not to attempt suicide again. Betty had no idea at the time how to even begin. ● She began by taking night classes at a community college, and then put herself through law school, all while raising two kids and managing a local pub. “It seemed like as long as I was doing something in school, Kenny was O.K.,” she said. It took her 13 years to get her law degree. ● She searched for DNA evidence which had supposedly been destroyed, and met with witnesses who admitted they had lied on the stand. The turning point arrived in 2000, when she teamed up with the Innocence Project. Together they obtained access to DNA testing on evidence from the crime scene which they doggedly tracked down. The results proved Kenny’s innocence. He was released in 2001, having served 18 years for a crime he did not commit.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 BETTY ANNE WATERS cont’d ● Kenny moved in with his loyal sister, and together they had a blast doing chat shows, media interviews, even appearing on “Oprah.” ● Tragically, just six months after his release in 2001, Kenny took a short cut over a fence, tripped, and fell 15 feet on to concrete. Thirteen days later, with Betty by his side in hospital, he died. ● Even after his death, Betty continued her campaign on his behalf. It took her another seven years to track down the evidence that would prove the police had deliberately sent the wrong man to prison. Fingerprint evidence that proved Kenny’s innocence had been hidden. Two witnesses had been coerced into testifying against him. The town of Ayer settled a lawsuit for $3.4 million. In 2010, a movie called “Conviction” was made, with Hilary Swank playing the role of Betty. ● In the meantime, Betty returned to her regular life: managing a pub, tending her family. She opted out of joining any law firm or starting a practice of her own. However, she does volunteer her time working for the Innocence Project, which works to exonerate the wrongfully accused. But the only time she’s returned to court was when the pub she works for had trouble renewing its liquor license. She won the case.

MIRROR FACTS ● The symbol for a female - a circle with a cross on the bottom - is based on the hand-held mirror. ● Mankind has always had a feeling that there was a physical self (the body) and an “other” self (the spirit). In early days it was thought that the reflection of the body in a shiny surface or mirror was an expression of the spiritual self, and therefore if anything happened to disturb that reflection, injury would follow. This was the origin of the superstition that breaking a mirror would bring seven years of bad luck. ● In ancient China, reflective pieces of polished brass were placed over doorknobs to

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com ensure that evil spirits would scare themselves away. ● When Roman ships began to attack the Greek city of Syracruse, mathematician Archimedes ordered the construction of a series of large concave mirrors which he placed in the sun on the shore. When their light was focused on the ships at sea, it suposedly set them on fire. ● Ben Franklin mounted mirrors outside his second-story window so he could secretly see who was knocking at his door. ● In 1916, patent #1,180,758 was awarded to a fish hook with a mirror mounted behind it to serve as a sinker. Not only would the mirror flash and reflect light, thereby attracting fish, but also, (according to the patent application) “a male fish seeing his image upon looking therein will appear to see another fish approach it from the opposite side with the intent to seize the bait, and this will not only arouse his warlike spirit, but also appeal to his greed, and he will seize the bait quickly in order to defeat the approaching rival.... In the case of a female fish the attractiveness of a mirror is too well known to need discussion.”

In an effort at revenge, he took a four foot mirror outside and tried to blind pilots by reflecting the sun into their eyes. He was arrested. ● A middle school in Oregon was faced with a unique problem. The girls were beginning to use lipstick and would apply it in the bathroom. After they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirrors leaving dozens of little lip prints. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the custodian. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every day. To demonstrate how difficult it was to clean the mirrors, she asked the custodian to clean one of the mirrors. He proceeded to take out a long-handled brush, dip it into the nearest toilet, and scrub the mirror. The lip prints disappeared. ● Managers like to use mirrors in lobbies because people complain less about waiting for slow elevators if they’re busy primping while waiting. ● In 1994, Russian astronauts orbiting in the Mir spacecraft tried to reflect sunlight into northern areas of their country in an attempt to lengthen the short growing season. A VERY LARGE MIRROR One of the world’s largest mirrors was constructed in 1997 by scientists at the University of Arizona for the Large Binocular Telescope on Mount Graham. The mirror is about 28 feet (8.4 meters) in diameter and cost $4 million to make. The mirror was 2,156 degrees F. (1180 c) when it was first cast and it took three full months to cool.

VA Hiring Vets for Mental-Health Jobs The Department of Veterans Affairs set a goal, and has met it. In 2012, an executive order was handed down to improve VA mental-health services for veterans, service personnel and their families by hiring more than 800 peer specialists and peer apprentices. The specialists and apprentices are themselves veterans who have been successful in dealing with their own mental-health issues for at least a year. Specialists are trained and certified, and the apprentices are in the process of getting training on the way to becoming specialists. Part of the executive order was that training for all of them would be finished by the end of the year. The VA says it will meet that goal. Both the specialists and apprentices have been sent to all VA Medical Centers that have more than 10,000 enrollees, as well as the outpatient clinics. And they increased staffing at the veterans crisis hotline by 50 percent. Overall, not a bad effort. If you need to talk to someone, or know a veteran who does, call the veterans crisis hotline at 1-800-2738255. There's a good chance that the person on the other end also will be a veteran. If you want to learn about the VA's mental-health services in general, go online to www.mentalhealth. va.gov. Do you think you'd make a good specialist or apprentice? Go online to www.vacareers.va.gov/peer-topeer/ and click on Search Peer Support Positions. As of this writing, there are positions in Alaska, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and many more. Remember that one of the main requirements is that you be a "veteran who has recovered or is recovering from a mental-health condition." Veterans with physical disabilities also are encouraged to apply. Look closely at the open and closing dates of the position listings. They're not all the same.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 Get Outdoor Plants Ready for Winter Q: What outdoor plants should I protect during the winter? Which can be left alone? -- Seth in New Jersey A: For exact information on which plants to protect and how, you'll want to ask at your local garden center. Each plant is different, but most are classified in the U.S. based on the growing zone in which they do best. If a plant is classed as "hardy" for your zone, it should do all right in the cold weather, with a few precautions. If not, or if it is a potted plant, consider bringing it inside, or wrap the plant or shrub in burlap tied with string to protect it from frosts and freezes. Many perennials need just a fresh layer of mulch, applied before the first hard frost. Again, check with your garden center or research your type of plant on the Internet to determine which mulch is best to use -- bark, hay, straw or leaves -- and how deep to mulch. Other ways to prepare your yard for winter include clearing away any loose debris, such as leaves and fallen branches, to prevent them from blowing around in the winter. If your garden has been harvested, now's the time to turn the soil and remove any stalks and dead vines before the ground freezes. It's also a good time to start a compost heap, if you haven't got one already. By spring, you should have some good compost to start the next garden. HOME TIP: Trouble with squirrels invading a bird feeder? Set the feeder at least 6 feet from tree branches or roof eaves and mount it on a metal pole, which is harder to climb. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

Plantar Fasciitis Causes Heel Pain

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This is the second time I have had plantar fasciitis. The first time was more than five years ago. A doctor outlined a program for me, but I have forgotten the details. Will you give me a refresher course? -- L.O. ANSWER: "Plantar" is the sole of the feet. The plantar fascia is a band of sturdy tissue that runs from the heels to the toes. It supports the feet and the foot arches. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Professional baseball, football and basketball players get it. People with flat feet or very high arches, overweight people, those who stand on hard surfaces for long periods and runners who suddenly increase their mileage or running time are the ones most likely to develop this injury. It happens to nonathletes, too. It causes intense pain when an affected person gets out of bed in the morning and takes a few steps. During the day, the pain lessens, but it returns toward the end of the working day. The pain can be so severe that people are forced to take time off from work. Other causes of heel pain include entrapment of a heel nerve in scar tissue, a loss of the fat pad that cushions the heel (found mostly in older people) and tiny fractures of the heel. Weight loss is the answer to this problem if a person

is overweight. Limit your walking, and don't do any running. You can bike and swim to stay in shape. At night, splint the foot so the toes point to the ceiling when you lie on your back. If the foot falls downward toward the bed, it aggravates heel pain. Ice the heel four times a day for 15 minutes. A silicone heel insert often proves helpful. Make sure your shoes are wellcushioned. Loop a towel around the front of the foot and, while seated, pull the towel so the foot is drawn to the body. This stretches the fascia. If this program fails, then see a doctor. A cortisone shot can bring rapid relief. The booklet on aerobics, fitness and abdominal exercises can give newcomers a start in their exercise program. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My fingernails are an eyesore. Since I turned 83, they've turned ugly. They break easily. What can I use to put some strength back in them? -- R.W. ANSWER: Keep your nails out of water. If you have to put them in water, wear protective gloves. Cut the nails short. You can use nail polish, but go very easy on polish remover. Nail hardeners are helpful. Don't buy ones that contain toluene or formaldehyde. A reader, J.G., wrote to me after the last time I wrote about fragile nails to endorse a product called Hard as Hoof, available at Walmart stores and probably others. The B vitamin biotin is said to harden nails.

Blueberries and Tea for Health? If you like to have a blueberry muffin and a cup of green tea in the morning, you might be halfway to increasing your cognitive functioning. That's only half said in jest. Natura Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company, has created a product that has been proven to increase cognitive function in older adults -- and blueberries and tea are half the ingredients. The whole list of ingredients is proprietary blend of blueberry, L-carnosine, green tea and vitamin D-3, which when combined produce more stem-cell rejuvenation than if used individually. The product is called NutraStem Cardio. In a double-blind test (no one knew who was getting the real thing or a placebo), 105 adults with an average age of 73.6 years were tested in six different areas: verbal ability, working memory, executive functioning, processing speed, episodic memory and complex speed. After doing a baseline test, the participants were retested two months later. The results: processing speed improved significantly, and there were improvements in decision-making, memory and attention. This means that there's hope for having products that actually improve cognitive health. There are some caveats, however: The company did its own research. The number of participants was small, and it was only done once. On the other hand, Natura Therapeutics is aligned with the University of South Florida, and the school's scientists are the ones who developed the product and ran the research. This is big. Grabbing any supplement off the grocery shelves is risky because we don't know what's in the products or where they came from. With the University of South Florida standing behind this one, there's assurance that at least the product won't hurt us and might even help.

You Can Achieve any Goal You’ve had lots of different goals, right? You’ve written them down, posted them on your refrigerator, read them every morning, dreamed about them during the night, and worked on them during the day. Yet if you were honest, you would have to admit that most of your goals have never been met. And if you were REALLY honest you would have to admit that you didn’t achieve your goals because you didn’t really want to – they weren’t that important. But you have been successful in some areas. I’m willing to bet that the important achievements of your life you accomplished without even thinking about them as goals. You did them because you wanted to. You did them because you wanted to. That’s quite a statement, isn’t it? In the final analysis it is not the goals you set but the passions you own that cause you to achieve. Achievement, you see, is about one thing: extra effort. No one goes the extra mile, works overtime, fights one more round, practices another hour, ignores defeat, disregards discouraging reports, learns another skill, alters the way they do business or changes their behavior unless they really, really want to.

External goals may help us, vision boards may challenge us, affirmations may remind us, but only our internal, self-chosen passions will drive us forward and cause us to achieve. Think about this, my friend: When you are in pursuit of your passions nothing can stop you. You may fall down many times, you may face powerful enemies who delay your progress, and you may work long and hard and all alone. But if you are in pursuit of your passions you are doing what you want to do, what you believe in, so you have little need for external goals. The question isn’t so much, “What are you goals?” The question is, “What are your passions?” Goals may excite you and challenge you for a moment, but passions will compel you to begin, sustain you in suffering, nourish you in weakness and smile on you in achievement. We all want a lot of things, but many of them we don’t want badly enough to give them any extra effort. You are more likely to get what you want if it is a burning passion within you, if you’re willing to put in some extra effort. Achievement, you see, is about one thing: extra effort.
