Come along with Tidbits as we visit the hospital. Antics & Anecdotes ● On Nov. 9, 1965, a backup relay on one of the five main transmission lines failed at a station near Toronto. The electrical load shifted to the other four lines, which then became overloaded and shut down. Within minutes, power plants in Canada, New York, and most of New England were out of service, putting 30 million people in the dark. In some areas, power was not restored for more than 12 hours. Nine months later, hospitals in the area noted a distinct increase in the number of babies born. ● Janos Pek of Hungary had been confined to a hospital bed for 11 years after an accident left him paralyzed and mute. In 1975, he was listening to the opening game of the soccer season on the radio. When the announcer described the tripping of a player of Pek’s favorite team, Pek shouted, “Penalty!” It was the first word he had spoken in over a decade. WEIRD REASONS FOR HOSPITAL TRIPS ● Owen Rutherford was an attendant at the Lincoln Park Zoo. One day he drove to the airport to pick up some snakes being shipped in. It seemed to him that the deadly black mamba snake was dead. So he poked it with his finger. The snake was not dead. Rutherford recovered in a nearby hospital. ● Abie Goldberry was goalie on a Canadian junior ice hockey team in 1930. In the back pocket of his hockey shorts he kept a book of matches and a plastic comb. When a puck from a hard shot struck his back pocket, the friction caused the matches to ignite, melting the comb and setting his pants on fire. He was rushed to the hospital, and his team lost 2 - 0. ● A 1961 game between the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies did not go well for the Giants, who lost 1-0. The Giant’s manager, Alvin Dark, was so angry at the team’s poor performance that he stormed into the clubhouse, grabbed a metal stool, and threw it across the room. Unfortunately, his pinky finger got caught on a rough edge of the metal and the tip of it tore off. He was rushed to the hospital and stitched up, minus the missing tip. His players felt bad, so to make their peace with him they found the tip of his finger, pickled it in alcohol, and presented the jar to him as a gift. ● George Watts of England liked being in the hospital. He liked the free room and board, and he especially liked being cared for by sympathetic nurses. So he made a habit of swallowing coins, then admitting himself to various hospitals across the country. He would complain of chest pains, doctors would remove the coins, nurses would care for him, and the government would pick up the tab. When the government figured out his scheme, he was sentenced to a year in jail for obtaining hospital care by deception.

Hot Cars: The Sequel DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read in a column of yours that the inside of a car can heat up to more than 100 degrees even on a day that's not too hot. I just don't believe that, especially when the windows are cracked. The airflow from that can keep temperatures low. And can't a dog just pant to cool off? -- Greg in Pittsburgh DEAR GREG: It's true. On an 80 degree Fahrenheit day, the interior of a car can heat up to 109 F within 20 minutes, according to nonprofit RedRover. But you don't have to take my word for it. Veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward recently posted a video where he sat in a car with a thermometer and a timer for 30 minutes on a hot summer day -- with the windows cracked. Dogs pant to cool off because they don't have sweat glands. Panting alone won't displace the heat they have to deal with in an enclosed car. But as we enter the hottest period of the season, I can't repeat it enough. Don't leave your pet in a parked car, not even for a few minutes. Not even with the windows cracked. ● On July 24, 1567, during her imprisonment at Lochleven Castle in Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots is forced to abdicate in favor of her 1-year-old son, later crowned King James VI of Scotland. In 1542, while just 6 days old, Mary had ascended to the Scottish throne upon the death of her father, King James V. ● On July 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln informs his chief advisers and cabinet that he will issue a proclamation to free slaves, but that he will wait until the Union Army has achieved a substantial military victory. The Emancipation Proclamation had less to do with ending slavery than saving the crumbling union. ● On July 23, 1918, Della Sorenson kills the first of her seven victims in Nebraska. Over the next seven years, friends, relatives and acquaintances of Sorenson died under mysterious circumstances. In 1925, Sorenson was arrested when she made an unsuccessful attempt at killing two children with poisoned cookies. ● On July 28, 1929, President John F. Kennedy's wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, is born into a prominent New York family. In 1951, she began her first job as the Washington Times-Herald's "Inquiring Camera Girl," roaming the streets of Washington, D.C., and asking "man on the street" questions. ● On July 26, 1943, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is born in Dartford, Kent, England. Michael Philip Jagger attended the London School of Economics, but left without graduating in order to pursue a career in music. ● On July 25, 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the world's first baby to be conceived via in vitro fertilization, is born in Manchester, England. In December 2006, Louise gave birth to a boy, Cameron John Mullinder, who was conceived naturally. ● On July 27, 1996, in Atlanta, the XXVI Summer Olympiad is disrupted by the explosion of a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park. The bombing killed one and injured more than 100 others. Police were warned of the bombing in advance, but the bomb exploded before the anonymous caller said it would.
Welcome to Goose Tips! The local gardens are abundant with fresh tomatoes right now. If you don’t have a garden of your own, hit the farmer’s market for some ripe, summer deliciousness. If you’re like me and have too many tomatoes, now’s the time to take an evening and stock up on pasta sauce for the winter. Here’s my faorite easy tomato suace: SIMPLE HOMEMADE PASTA SAUCE Ingredients: 1 pound Sausage 1 large Onion, diced 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil 5 cups Crushed Tomatoes 5 cups Diced Tomatotes 2 Tablespoons Oregano 1 Tablespoon Thyme 2 Tablespoons Sugar 2 teaspoons Salt 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon Brown onion and sausage in oil until sausage is cooked and onions are soft. Add crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, oregano, thyme, sugar, salt, pepper, and cinnamon. Simmer over medium-low heat for at least 20 minutes to 2 hours. I store my exta sauce in plastic freezer bags that are labeled and dated. This will help with easy weeknight dinners in the coming months. WEIRD REASONS FOR HOSPITAL TRIPS ● Donald Wright was installing a door in Toronto when he fell off the ladder, knocking himself out. When he came to, he found that he had fallen on his electric drill— which was on at the time. The drill was imbedded three inches deep in his skull. He pulled on it but it wouldn’t come out. So he restarted it, reversed the direction, and pulled it out. At the hospital they removed a bone fragment from his brain. Afterwards he was fine. ● Police officer Timothy Day of Indianapolis made a trip to the hospital after picking up a bag of cocaine to seize it as evidence, and a gust of wind blew the contents into his face. MALPRACTICE ● In 1970 in Indiana the parents of 15-month-old Rodney Brown were informed the child suffered from cystic fibrosis and would not live past his mid-teens. For the next decade, Rodney was subjected to all manner of medical procedures. In 1975 Rodney was chosen as Indiana’s cystic fibrosis poster child, and in 1976 he became the national poster child. He even met Pres. Ford. In 1980 the family moved to Maryland and took Rodney to see a new doctor. The new doctor found that Rodney did not have cystic fibrosis after all. He merely suffered from asthma. ● A psychic suffering from persistent headaches had a CT-scan. The dye they used, she said, made her feel like her head was going to explode. Afterwards she found her psychic powers had evaporated. She sued the hospital. Although the jury awarded her nearly $1 million, the judge threw out the verdict. ● In 1984 a 305-pound man in Virginia underwent a stomach-stapling operation to lose weight. He was still in the hospital two days later when he spied a refrigerator. He ate so much he popped the staples and required emergency surgery. He later tried to sue the hospital, saying they were negligent in allowing him near the fridge.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 MENTAL PATIENTS ● Nathaniel Lee was an author who suffered from bouts of insanity and was confined to Bedlam Hospital. A friend once visited him there. Lee showed him around, giving him a tour of the hospital. His conversation was so rational that the friend hoped that Lee might have recovered his sanity. His hopes were dashed, however, when they reached the roof of the building. “Let us achieve immortality by leaping down off this roof!” exclaimed Lee. Coolly, the friend replied, “Any man can leap DOWN off a building and there is no immortality in that. True immortality would be achieved by going to the pavement below and leaping UP!” Lee rushed quickly down the stairs to see if he could indeed achieve immortality this way. ● Catherine Yasinchuk came to the U.S. before World War I at the age of 15. She spoke only her native Ukrainian. She married, had a child— and was devastated when they both died. She wandered the streets weeping. The police found her, but she only babbled incoherently. The police sent her to a mental hospital. She was 23 at the time. She lived there for the next 48 years, where everyone assumed she was insane because she was unable to communicate. In 1968 a new director reviewed her case. An employee who spoke Ukrainian discovered she could communicate after all. She was released from the institute and went to live with the daughter of the woman in the personnel department. She died in 1983, having spent half her life in an institute because she spoke a different language. THE FINAL FACT At the prison in McAlester, Oklahoma, death row inmate Robert Brecheen overdosed the day before he was to be executed. He was rushed to the hospital where his stomach was pumped. Then he was taken back to the prison and promptly executed.

WOMEN IN HISTORY DOROTHEA DIX ● Dorothea Dix was born in Maine in 1802 and moved to Boston as a child. As a young woman, she opened a school for girls and found that she loved teaching. ● Her appetite for knowledge was insatiable. She attended lectures and read widely. She studied literature, history and the natural sciences with a special emphasis on botany and astronomy. She had an aptitude for writing and produced a number of successful books. ● In 1841 she began teaching Sunday school at a women’s prison in Massachusetts, where she was horrified by the appalling treatment the prisoners were subjected to – especially the inmates who suffered from mental illnesses. It upset her that the mentally ill were housed alongside felons, which she felt was unfair. The prison had no heat and she immediately went to court in order to secure heat for the prison. This kicked off a life-long devotion to social reform. ● Following this experience, she set about to conduct a statewide examination of how the state of Massachusetts cared for poor people who were also insane. Most towns simply hired local individuals to care for people with mental disorders. Because the system was unregulated and underfunded, there was widespread abuse. Dorothea presented a scathing report to the state legislature, pointing to numerous instances where people had been chained, beaten, and starved. As a result of her lobbying, the mental hospital in Worcester, MA was expanded. ● Next Dorothea traveled to other states, working tirelessly to instigate social reform for the mentally ill. She documented conditions, published papers, met with politicians, and worked with committees to draft new laws. ● Illinois opened their first mental asylum as a direct result of her efforts. The institute that was built in Raleigh, North Carolina was named in her honor. Pennsylvania followed suit shortly afterwards and opened an asylum in Harrisburg.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 DOROTHEA DIX (cont’d) ● In 1854 she guided the Bill for the Benefit of the Indigent Insane through the United States Congress, which provided funds to build more asylums across the country. Although it was passed with broad support from both houses of Congress, the bill was vetoed by President Franklin Pierce, who felt that the federal government should not be involved in social welfare, which was the responsibility of the states. ● Angry over the rejection of the bill, Dorothea traveled to Scotland and then to Nova Scotia where she continued her work. She mercilessly exposed the enormous disparity between public and private hospitals. After visiting with Pope Pius IX, he was moved to order the construction of a new hospital for the mentally ill. ● Dix returned to the United States in 1856. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, she volunteered her services and was named superintendent of nurses. She was responsible for setting up field hospitals and first-aid stations, recruiting nurses, managing supplies, and setting up training programs. ● In 1881, Dix moved into the New Jersey State Hospital, which she had founded 40 years earlier. The state legislature designated a suite for her private use as long as she lived. She died on July 17, 1887. ● All in all, her tireless efforts over the course of 40 years directly led to the construction of 32 institutions for the care of the mentally ill in the U.S. and resulted in a major change in the way the mentally ill are treated.

Hormones Can Cause Female Facial Hair
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I'm a 26-year-old woman with an embarrassing problem. I'm growing a mustache. What causes this? I have started to shave, but I worry that shaving is going to make the hair grow faster and coarser. I see some hair on my breasts, too. What can I do about this? -- V.K. ANSWER: Hair growth in females in places where it should be found only in males is hirsutism (HERE-suitizm). Such areas include the skin above the upper lip, the chin, the chest, the thighs, the upper back and the abdomen. Hair in those places is sensitive to the action of male hormones. Common causes for such hair growth are idiopathic (a definite cause not found), menopause (when female hormone production dips) and polycystic ovary syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome is fairly common. Signs of it are a diminution or complete stoppage of menstrual periods, hirsutism, obesity and large ovaries with many cysts. One of the mechanisms responsible for some polycystic ovary symptoms is an overproduction of androgen -- male hormones. The unwanted pattern of hair growth stems from androgen excess. Idiopathic hirsutism -- hair growth without a cause found -- might be a mild form of polycystic ovary syndrome. That's a popular theory expounded by many experts. Rarer causes of hirsutism include adrenal gland overactivity, tumors of the adrenal gland or ovary,
pituitary gland tumors and some prescription medicines. You're not going to solve this on your own. You need a doctor to evaluate your hormone status. The appropriate treatment hinges on finding a specific cause. When a cause cannot be found, shaving, electrolysis, depilatories (chemical hair removers) and laser treatments are options. Shaving doesn't make hair grow faster or coarser. Vaniqa cream, a prescription item, gets rid of unwanted hair quite well. Birth-control pills work when a woman needs estrogen. Spironolactone, a water pill, can counter the influence of male hormones and is often useful. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the appropriate time interval for a repeat colonoscopy? I have different information from doctors. I had my first colonoscopy when I was 51. The doctor who performed it said I didn't need another until I was 61. A different doctor says I need a repeat at 56. Which is it? -- E.P. ANSWER: If no polyps were found on your first exam and if you have no close relatives who have had colon cancer, then the usual time for the next exam is 10 years. Otherwise, it is five years. CEREAL (cont’d) ● The Trix rabbit is always trying to sneak a bowl of Trix cereal, but the kids constantly take it away from him, saying “Trix is for kids!” During the 1976 presidential elections, General Mills worried that this might be teaching kids a bad thing: try as you might, you’ll never reach your goal. Homebuyers Should Lock In Rates With mortgage interest rates rising, it's more important than ever for homebuyers to make sure they know how to get the best deal. Send for your credit reports from the big three reporting agencies. Scrutinize them and make sure there are no errors that would keep you from getting a mortgage or being saddled with one that has a higher interest rate. Apply for a mortgage before you start your hunt for property. Get your loan commitment letter so you know exactly what you can afford -- and then reduce that amount. Don't spend up to the limit that a bank says you can afford. Use a real-estate agent to help you find a home. Don't try to do it on your own, even if you fall in love with a "For sale by owner" property. The agent will have all the proper documents that will protect you and will know which questions to ask. For example, a seller will need to provide a disclosure of the property's condition. The agent will also know your state laws regarding title hunts and will be able to negotiate contract items on your behalf. One very tricky area, however, is all up to you: the mortgage rate lock-in. Get the best advice possible about when to lock in your mortgage rate. A rate quote is only an estimate and can change. A rate lock-in is a written promise from the lender to give you a mortgage at a certain interest rate, even if the rates go up. It's a risk for the bank, and it will charge you for it. Watch out for a "rate cap" in your lock-in document; this allows the lender to increase your rate anyway. Rate lock-ins are good only for a set period of time, typically less than 60 days. If the rates go down, however, you can be locked into the higher rate. You can ask for a "float" to allow you to get the lower rate, but that costs money. Ask your lender for its average processing time. It's a guessing game in the end, because it's likely that your mortgage won't be processed in the length of time covered by the lock-in. The cheapest lock-in option is to take the shortest period you dare, making sure you quickly do all that is required of you when it comes to paperwork. "We can leave an ongoing craft activity out for days," she said as she pulled a glue stick from the 24-drawer antique apothecary chest that is perfect for organizing and storing craft supplies the family uses when an idea strikes. Like decorating Chinese take-out boxes. "Close family and friends are soon coming from both coasts for the B'nei mitzvah of our sons," she said. "We want to have a personalized welcome gift in their hotel rooms when they arrive. That's when we came up with embellishing simple white Chinese take-out boxes with origami paper cut into different shapes We'll fill each box with bags of 'Rebecca's special homemade granola.' If you have a family reunion, anniversary or birthday celebration coming up this summer, get your kids involved in the preparations, and decorate Chinese take-out boxes for a unique homemade memento. Fill them with a gift such as jam, mixed nuts, candies or something special from your area. (For unwrapped food items, use cellophane bags with twist ties to keep them fresh.) Here's the stuff: --Pint-size white Chinese take-out containers available in some party-supply stores, craft stores or check your local Asian restaurant. They might sell you some for a small price. --Construction paper, and a selection of patterned origami and/or scrapbook papers --Scissors --Glue stick and/or double stick tape Here's the fun: Set out all of the supplies on a table. You may wish to fan out the craft papers to see the colors and designs to stimulate ideas. Cut out shapes one by one and either glue or tape them to the four sides of the box and the outer top flaps. When the boxes are decorated, place the gift or party favors inside, close the lids and add a label or tie a tag to the metal handle for a final flourish. Extra decorating ideas: --Paint eye-catching stripes, patterns and swirls using acrylic paints in squeeze bottles. --Glue on buttons, pieces of ribbon or other craft supplies for a themed or holiday look. --Stamp or stencil team and school logos and mascots for a sports event. --Affix stickers, labels and photos backed with doublestick tape -- a fun activity for preschoolers.

Apricot Upside-Down Cake
The Apricot Upside-Down Cake is a great dessert for any summertime get-together! 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 8 ripe apricots, each cut in half and pitted 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup cornmeal 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cup low-fat buttermilk 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons margarine or butter, melted 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray 10-inch cast iron or
ovenproof skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over bottom of skillet. Arrange apricot halves, cut side down, over brown sugar. 2. In large bowl, whisk flour, granulated sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, salt and baking soda until blended. In small bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, margarine, oil, lemon peel and vanilla extract until blended. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients and fold with a spatula until just blended. Pour batter over apricots and spread to cover evenly. 3. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Let cool in skillet on wire rack 10 minutes. Run knife around side of skillet. Place platter on top of skillet and carefully invert cake onto platter. Remove skillet. Cool cake slightly to serve warm, about 30 minutes. Serves 8. ● Each serving: About 290 calories, 8g total fat (1g saturated), 62mg cholesterol, 365mg sodium, 49g total carbs, 2g dietary fiber, 5g protein. Reviewing PTSD Claims for Sexual Assault Congresswoman Chellie Pingree asked the Department of Veterans Affairs to review PTSD claims that had been turned down, claims submitted by survivors of sexual assault while in the military. The VA agreed, but dragged its feet about notifying victims of a change in policy. If you're a survivor of military sexual assault, here are some things you need to know: Many of the responses to sexual assault can lead to PTSD if untreated: trouble sleeping, trouble with attention and memory, abusing alcohol and drugs, feeling numb and more. If you have PTSD due to sexual assault and filed a claim for benefits, your initial claim was no doubt turned down. You should have received a letter by now from the VA saying it will re-evaluate your claim. However, many veterans were not sent this letter. It's up to you to ask for a re-evaluation. Review the information on Pingree's site (pingree.house.gov/mstclaims) first. In many cases, the VA ignored "secondary markers," which are evidence an assault occurred. These include records from law enforcement or rape crisis centers, tests for sexually transmitted diseases, episodes of depression or anxiety, and substance abuse. You can ask for a re-evaluation of your denied claim by calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000. Also on Pingree's site are links to VA Form 21-4138 and VA Form 21-0187A, statements in support of your claim. Meanwhile, you don't have to wait on the VA's decision to get counseling for PTSD. Choosing the Right Medicare Drug Plan Choosing a drug plan through Medicare (called Part D) can be something of a guessing game. If you want to change plans or are just about to sign up, the choices can be confusing. Here are a few things to know: Your regular pharmacy might not be in a "network" that your plan covers. You'll have to go to another pharmacy for your drugs to be covered, a "preferred" pharmacy that has agreed to charge less, per your plan. Even if your drug is on your plan's list, it might not be in the future. Plan providers have 60 days to notify you that it won't be available. You'll need to have your doctor ask for an exception, or you'll need to change drugs, or you'll need to pay more to keep taking them. The drug plans are broken into four categories, or tiers: Lowest co-pay: generic drugs Medium co-pay: preferred brand-name prescription drugs (Preferred means that it's what Medicare prefers you take.) Higher co-pay: non-preferred, brand-name drugs Specialty tier: highest co-pay, unique, high-cost drugs Before you sign up for any drug plan, get all your information. Go online to medicare.gov, click on Forms, then Publications, then type 11136 in the search box for the drug plan fact sheet. Then do another search for "Part D" for a long list of publications. Best bet: If you can afford a plan that lets you use your regular neighborhood pharmacy, do so. If it has a pharmacist that you trust, he or she can keep an eye on all the drugs you are taking, to make sure there are no interactions. Q: My cousin often asks me to come over and help with various home-repair projects. The thing is, he isn't particularly good at these various tasks, particularly plumbing, yet he won't take advice. He just sticks to the instructions he downloads from the Web, without varying. How can I help him be a little more flexible in how he accomplishes jobs? I'm ready to just stop helping him. -- Barry in Oklahoma City A: It can be pretty difficult to convince a new DIY'er that the instructions for a project aren't always exactly right. That might seem odd coming from a home-improvement column that offers advice on various projects, but reallife experience offers variables that written instructions can't always predict. There's a lot of ego wrapped up in fixing things yourself, especially when it's on your own property. So being told you're wrong about a repair step can be tough to process. What do I mean by instructions that aren't always right? Well, instructions for many repairs are given as general instruction -- they don't address specific brands or models, or the exact problem you're facing. Take, for example, repairing a dripping faucet. There are plenty of instructions available to fix this problem on the most common types of faucets -- there is the basic compression faucet, but there are also ball, disc and cartridge

types. And each manufacturer and model has slight differences -- sometimes it's just chrome finish versus brushed steel, but others have unique peculiarities. What if, for example, there's a problem with a cartridgetype faucet, but when your cousin follows repair directions exactly, the faucet doesn't work? He's got to look at other sources or listen to other advice. I'll give you an example. My mother called a plumber to install a new cartridgetype faucet recently. She used to do this kind of improvement herself, but in the past few years has decided against complex DIY projects. The plumber installed the faucet, but was stumped as it was non-operational. What to do? My mother had already called the manufacturer and learned that the cartridge had to be installed in a specific sequence. Once she convinced the plumber to follow her initial instructions, the faucet worked perfectly. For my mother, tact wasn't a big of a problem because the plumber was getting paid to do the job. For you, since your cousin is family, convincing him to do a job a bit differently from the instructions may take some work. Be patient, make recommendations calmly (like, "hey, why not try this?") and don't threaten to leave if he doesn't follow your advice. If it's too stressful to work with your cousin, and giving it one more try didn't work, then perhaps it's wiser to just make yourself unavailable for DIY jobs at his place. HOME TIP: Appliance and part manufacturers often include customer-service numbers on product packaging. Before returning an item to the store because of a problem, contact the manufacturer to see if another solution is available.
