TIDBITS® DRIFTS THROUGH
SPACE
by Janet Spencer Neil Armstrong, while describing the first steps man took on the moon, admitted that he was also the first man to wet his pants on the moon. Come along with Tidbits as we explore space!
HEATING • COOLING • PLUMBING
FIRST FACTS ● The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, launched by the USSR in 1957, weighed only 184 lbs. (83 kg) and was a mere 22.8 inches (58 cm) in diameter. In 1958, the U.S. launched its first satellite, the Explorer. It weighed only 18 lbs. (8 kg). ● In 1959, the Soviet craft Lunik 2 was the first man-made object to reach the moon. It landed so hard that the instruments were destroyed and no data was collected. ● Aladimir Komarov was the first cosmonaut to be killed in space. He launched on April 23, 1967, from the USSR aboard the spacecraft Soyuz 1. He was to orbit the earth 18 times in 25 hours, then come down to earth as a parachute slowed his descent. But the straps to the parachute broke and Komarov died. ● The spaceship Columbia, which took the Eagle and three astronauts to the moon in 1969, had a control panel which had 566 switches, 71 lights, 40 event indicators, and 24 instruments. ● The first re-usable space shuttle was named “Enterprise” in honor of the success of the “Star Trek” series. ASTRONAUT ANECDOTES cont'd ● Astronaut John Young was with Gus Grissom on the first manned space flight in 1965. Young smuggled a sandwich on board the capsule to supplement the boring fare offered by NASA. However, the crumbs from the sandwich threatened to ruin some of the equipment on board. Young was reprimanded by officials for his unauthorized snack. ● The first meal eaten on the moon, consumed by Armstrong and Aldrin, consisted of four bacon squares, three sugar cookies, peaches, pineapple-grapefruit drink, and coffee. ● President Nixon placed the first phone call to the moon on July 21, 1969. He spoke to Aldrin and Armstrong in the lunar module. ● Alan Shepard knocked a few golf balls around on the moon. But he missed the first shot, taking a mulligan. This earned him a lifetime membership in the U.S. Duffers Association of Newport, KY. They also awarded him the presidency of their first moon chapter. ● When Navy Commander Pete Conrad set foot on the moon during the second lunar landing on November 19, 1969, he said, “Man, that may have been a small one for Neil Armstrong, but that’s a long one for me!” Conrad was only 5 foot 6 inches tall. ● When Alan Bean walked on the moon, he tried to fix a TV camera that was not working by hitting it with a hammer. He failed. DANGER ZONE ● A study done on a Spacelab mission showed that some microorganisms reproduce better in the weightlessness of space. This fact, coupled with the fact that human immune systems don’t tend to work as well in space, could spell trouble for future long-term astronauts. It is feared that unless great precautions are taken, certain bacteria may be able to invade a spacecraft and present grave danger to its inhabitants.

Boarding Cats DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We're headed off on vacation, and I would like my cat to be cared for during the two weeks we're gone. I don't know a reliable pet sitter whom I can trust to come into my house. Is there such a thing as kennels for cats? -- June in New Orleans DEAR JUNE: There are boarding facilities that will take cats as well as other pets. I prefer to use facilities that are exclusively for cats, but not everyone has that option available in their area. Still, call around to several facilities. Even if none cater just to cats, look for one that has a living and play area completely segregated from other types of pets. One of my favorite places offered each cat a private "cubby" with scratching post and shelf. There were no bars or fence grates. Instead, each cubby had a clear plastic door so caretakers could see each cat, and a one-way-glass wall with a view of a park. During the day, they were taken to a

common area to socialize with other cats, and the facility was attached to a veterinarian's office. Contrast that with a boarding facility I found in another region when trying to board my cat. It was mainly for dogs, with a small room full of metal cages for "other" pets, including cats, rabbits and so on. The pets all looked stressed out, especially as the constant barking from the dogs' play area reverberated into their living area. That's why it's important to personally visit each facility you're considering, so you get a feel of the place. It'll help make the experience better for your cat. If you can't find one that works, please reconsider the pet sitter. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don't? Find out more in my new book "Fighting Fleas," available now on Amazon.
Welcome to Goose Tips! Did you take your family to the County Fair this past week? Every year the county fair is a great way to have some family fun. But the week after, we find ourselves craving those yummy fair foods. Funnel cake doesn’t have to be a once a year treat...make it at home with your little ones using this easy recipe: You’ll Need: 1 Egg 2/3 cup Milk 2 Tablespoons Sugar 1 1/4 cup Flour 1/4 teaspoon Salt 1 teaspoon Baking Powder Preheat your fry daddy to 350. Beat egg and milk. Mix all other ingredients in a separate bowl and slowly add to the egg mixture, beating until smooth. Using a funnel, drop into hot oil working from center outwards in a web pattern. (You can use a gallon sized freezer bag instead of a funnel by pouring the batter into the bag, snipping off a small corner of it, and squeezing the batter into the oil.) Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes, remove from the oil when golden brown and crispy. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! Hungry for more? Find this, and other great tips on our Facebook page. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t. ---Kat Brabham, owner

ASTRONAUT ANECDOTES cont'd FAST FACTS ● Michael Collins walked in space twice during the Gemini 10 mission in 1966. When he returned, he filled out his travel voucher: $8 a day for 3 days, and he was reimbursed $24. He said later that he should have charged 7¢ a mile equaling $80,000, but acknowledged that one of the Mercury astronauts had already tried it, and had received in return a bill from NASA for a couple million dollars for the non-reusable rocket. ● When Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin returned from the moon, they dutifully declared their lunar rocks and dust on customs form. FAR-OUT FACTS ● Researchers at the University of Chicago found multitudes of dust-sized diamond particles embedded in meteorites that may predate the sun and the Earth. These diamonds may have been formed in the atmosphere of an exploding star and then spewed across space up to 4.5 billion years ago. This suggests that the universe is full of these minuscule diamonds. ● Scientists at the University of Hawaii have found two asteroids which they believe are composed almost entirely of metal. According to their spectrograph measurements (light bounced off the asteroids to tell their content) the asteroids are almost pure iron and nickel. These two objects come relatively close to Earth’s orbit. It is thought that since they are both more than two miles wide, their worth (at today’s market value), could top several trillion dollars each if they could ever be brought back to Earth. ● The dust from Halley’s Comet (collected by the Vega 1 space probe), contain a rich assortment of organic compounds. The dust also held silicate materials and ices. The organic materials were mostly hydrocarbons and do not indicate the presence of actual life forms.

● On Aug. 11, 1856, a hurricane hits Isle Derniere, a resort community on the Louisiana coast, killing more than 400 people. The storm first brought blinding and torrential rain, then storm surges and finally a tidal wave. Upward of 150 people were carried off with the wave, with some bodies ending up 6 miles away. ● On Aug. 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution in history by electrocution is carried out against William Kemmler. It didn't go as planned. With the first charge, the current failed. A second charge was required for two minutes before Kemmler was declared deceased. ● On Aug. 7, 1944, under the threat of Allied bombing during World War II, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen halts production of the "Beetle." Volkswagen, under the control of the British military, began turning out Beetles again in December 1945. ● On Aug. 5, 1957, rock 'n' roll television show "American Bandstand" goes national with teens dancing and rating records on a scale from 35 to 98. The show was broadcast from Philadelphia to 67 ABC affiliates across the country. Dick Clark was host, a slot he held for 27 years. ● On Aug. 9, 1969, members of Charles Manson's cult kill five people in movie director Roman Polanski's Beverly Hills, Calif., home, including Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate. Polanski was not the cult leader's intended target. Manson, an aspiring musician, chose the Polanski house because he had once unsuccessfully tried to get a recording deal from a producer who used to live there. ● On Aug. 10, 1978, three teenage girls die after their 1973 Ford Pinto is rammed from behind by a van and bursts into flames. It was known as far back as 1972 that the Pinto's gas tank, which sat behind the rear axle, was particularly vulnerable to damage by rear-end collisions. ● On Aug. 8, 1986, actor, writer and director Spike Lee's first feature-length movie, "She's Gotta Have It," opens in theaters around the United States. The movie launched Lee's career and established his reputation as an outspoken filmmaker who often tackled controversial subjects.

● While in the Capitol rotunda attending the funeral for Congressman Warren B. Davis in January 1835, President Andrew Jackson was the victim of an assassination attempt. Richard Lawrence, a 35-year-old house painter, pointed two revolvers at the president and fired. In an incredible stroke of luck, both weapons misfired, at which point President Jackson began to beat the man with his cane. ● The Dead Sea isn't actually a sea; it's a lake. ● It's been reported that the Paul Simon found the inspiration for his hit song "Mother and Child Reunion" in a chicken-and-egg dish he was eating in a Chinese restaurant. ● More than 60 percent of the 50 most common words in the English language contain three or fewer letters. ● Natives of Finland drink more coffee per capita than citizens of any other country in the world. ● The Hula Hoop fad swept the globe in the 1950s, but the toy did not find a warm welcome everywhere. In Indonesia, Hula Hoops were banned because they "might stimulate passion." China's official news agency called it "a nauseating craze," and the Soviets declared the toy to be "a symbol of the emptiness of American culture" (despite the fact that the Hula Hoop originated in Australia). ● Adult tuna have been known to swim up to 100 miles in a single day. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 ASTRONAUT ANECDOTES cont'd SPACE TRASH Scientists, engineers, and space planners in general are becoming increasingly concerned with the growing number of small pieces of space junk. The North American Aerospace Defense Command currently tracks more than 7,000 objects the size of a baseball or larger orbiting the Earth. Recent research appears to show there are many more large objects we aren’t tracking. One half of these small objects come from the 80 satellites that have broken up while in orbit, and there are probably millions of smaller particles stuck in Earth orbit. These particles are no small matter when it comes to space travel. A particle no more than 0.6 millimeters wide can penetrate one of the space suits currently used by NASA. When the shuttle Challenger was orbiting in 1983, a small chip of paint hit the windshield and gouged a quarter-inch crater. The space debris can also wreak havoc on Earth-bound astronomers and delicate equipment in orbit. ASTONISHING ASTRONOMY ● On a clear night, the average person can see only 3,000 stars. If the sum of all starlight that falls on the Earth could be concentrated on one point, it would only equal a 100-watt bulb seen from a distance of 613 feet (187 m). ● Just one square inch of the sun’s surface shines with the intensity of 300,000 candles. ● The sun contains 99.9% of the solar system’s entire mass. ● The full moon is nine times as bright as the half moon, since the surface of the visible half moon is extremely rough and mountainous, which makes for more shadows and less reflected sunlight. QUICK BIT ● 12 men have walked on the surface of the moon. Their footprints will be visible for an estimated ten million years. Those dozen men have spent a total of 300 hours there, and they brought back 842 lbs. (381 kg) of lunar rock.

® of®Gallia, Tidbits Jackson, Vinton, & Mason Counties Tidbits of Gallia, Jackson, MeigsMeigs & Mason Counties WOMEN IN HISTORY VALENTINA TERESHKOVA ● Valentina Tereshkova, born in central Russia in 1937, grew up to become not only the first woman to have flown in space, but also the first civilian to have flown in space. When the Russian space program announced they were taking applications for the first female cosmonaut, there were over 400 applicants. The list of qualifications stipulated that applicants must be under 5 ft 7 in tall (170 cm), must weigh less than 154 lbs (70kg), and must be expert skydivers. Valentina met all of the qualifications. ● Of the 400 applicants, five finalists were chosen. All five women then commenced a grueling months-long training program which included weightless flights, isolation tests, centrifuge tests, rocket theory, spacecraft engineering, 120 parachute jumps, and pilot training in jet fighters. After examinations in November of 1962, four were chosen to continue the training. Within a few months, Valentina was picked to be the first woman in space, being the solo pilot of Vostok 6. Nikita Khrushchev confirmed the appointment. ● On June 14, 1965, Vostok 5 was launched with a male cosmonaut piloting. Two days later, Valentina prepared to follow him into orbit aboard the Vostok 6. They would orbit the planet simultaneously. On the morning of June 16, she was dressed in her flight suit and taken to the launch pad. She went through the communication and life support checks, and then was sealed inside the craft. Following a two-hour countdown, the Vostok 6 launched flawlessly, and Valentina became the first woman in space. Her call sign was ‘Chaika’ meaning ‘Seagull.’ ● She was 26 years old at the time, which was ten years younger than Gordon Cooper, the youngest Mercury 7 astronaut. Prior to this, only military personal had been launched by any country.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 VALENTINA TERESHKOVA cont’d ● She spent 71 hours in space, orbiting the planet 48 times at a maximum distance from Earth of 143 miles (231 km). With a single flight, she logged more flight time than the combined times of all American astronauts who had flown before that date. ● Her craft, the Vostok 6, came within 3 miles (5 km) of the Vostok 5, and they communicated by radio. When the two craft reentered, they landed within three hours of each other. ● Although she reported suffering from nausea (which she claimed was because of the poor food), she kept up a schedule of taking photographs, making observations, and recording changes in her body. ● Because the craft was not able to land, Valentina had to bail out with her parachute at just the right moment. Buffeted by strong winds, she nearly missed the landing site and almost landed in a lake. Once on the ground, the wind caught her parachute and dragged her a short distance before she was able to disconnect herself. She received a badly bruised nose but was otherwise unhurt. ● After returning home, she was acclaimed as a national hero. She went on to become a cosmonaut engineer and has spent much of her life in key political positions. She married fellow cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev, who was the only bachelor astronaut to go into space. Their wedding was presided over by Khrushchev. ● In 1964 she gave birth to a daughter, who became the only person to have two parents who had both been in space.

WEIRD WONDERFUL WORDS ● Eighty percent of English words are not spelled phonetically. That is, they are not written as they sound. ● ‘Manslaughter’ and ‘man’s laughter’ are spelled exactly the same. So are ‘fatherless’ and ‘fat her less.’ ● The letter combination of ‘ough’ has more pronunciations than any other combinations: bough, bought, cough, dough, hiccough, rough, thoroughbred, through, and trough. ● The word ‘queue’ is the only word which retains its original pronunciation even when the last four letters are dropped. ● ‘Strengths’ is the longest word with only one vowel. ‘Latchstring’ has six consonants in a row. Beijing, Fiji, and hijinks have the most dots in a row. ‘Set’ has the most different meanings, with ‘run’ running a close second. ● George Bernard Shaw, who tried unsuccessfully to will his fortune to anyone who could invent a better alphabet, declared it was possible to spell fish ‘ghoti’ by using gh as in enough; o as in women; and ti as in nation. But there are many ways to spell fish. For instance: Phusi- physics / busy / pension. FFess- off / pretty / issue. Ughyce- laugh / hymn / ocean. The list is endless. ● ‘Floccinaucinihilipilification’ is the longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary. The word is unusual not only because it dates back to 1741; not only because it has 29 letters with 9 i’s and no e’s, but also because it means to classify something as worthless or trivial. ● Amaze your friends by dropping these words into the conversation: Foozle: a bungling golf stroke. Groak: to stare hopefully at other’s food. Schizocarps: the pinwheels that grow on maple trees. Vomer: the slender bone separating the nostrils.

Diabetic Diet Can be Daunting
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What should I eat with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol? All the advice I get tells me what I cannot eat -- no potatoes, no bread, no crackers, no cereal, no fruit. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I don't know what to eat. -- C.L. ANSWER: The diet for type 1 and type 2 diabetes is not as restrictive as it once was. You can eat all the foods you mentioned. Sugar also can be eaten, something that was strictly prohibited in the past. You have to use it in moderation, and it's best to save sugar calories for other carbohydrates by using artificial sweeteners. Weight reduction, if applicable to you, is the best way for you to control blood sugar. A 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss is a sure way to keep blood sugar where it should be. For high blood pressure, limit salt. You ought not to eat more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium. Read the sodium content of foods on their nutrition labels. For cholesterol control, cut back on fatty meats and wholefat dairy products. You can use low-fat dairy. Carbohydrates are an issue with diabetes. Carbohydrates are sugars and starches. They should constitute 50 percent to 55 percent of your total daily calories. Fruits (yes, you can eat them), vegetables, cereals, breads, crackers, pastas and similar foods are carbohydrates. You have to get a book that lists the calorie content of foods and their protein, fat and carbohydrate makeup. These guides are in all bookstores, and they're cheap.
Breakfast shouldn't be a problem. You can drink orange juice if you like it, have cereal, have toast and drink coffee or whatever. You need a coach in the form of a dietitian. The dietitian can help you navigate through the difficulties of understanding a diabetic diet. Your doctor or the local hospital can put you in touch with one. You also need to contact the American Diabetes Association, whose website is www.diabetes.org. Or call 1-800-342-2383. The association will provide you with tons of information on diet and on diabetes in general. The booklet on diabetes presents this illness and its treatments in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 59-year-old man. About five years ago, I had my spleen removed due to a traumatic injury. I was vaccinated with the pneumococcus vaccine. I was told that it would last a lifetime. Does that apply to a person without a spleen? -- J.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an integral part of the immune system. People who don't have one are more susceptible to infections and, in particular, to pneumococcal infections. The pneumococcus (NEWmoe-KOK-us) causes pneumonia and potentially lethal blood infections. People without a spleen need a second dose of the vaccine five years after the first dose. The pneumococcal vaccine is popularly called the pneumonia vaccine.

WORD ORIGINS ● Makrama is the Turkish word meaning a fringed napkin and gives us macrame. ● In the South Seas the word tattaw means to knock or to strike and gave us the word tattoo. ● The chess term checkmate comes from the Persian shah mat meaning “the king is dead.” ● When Bradley, Voorhees, and Day formed an underwear company in 1876, they called their product BVDs. ● The Hollywood stereotype of an Indian saying “How!” is based on the traditional Indian A-Hau meaning “Peace with you” or “All is well.” ● The ancient Greeks used a resin called ‘mumia’ or ‘momie’ to preserve bodies, giving us mummies. ● The word tip is an abbreviation for “to insure promptness.” ● The German word frau means wife. It is a contraction of two German words, froh meaning joy, and weh meaning woe. ● The word potpourri originally meant a stew. In French it literally means “putrid pot.”

WORD TRIVIA (cont’d) ● In the Shan language of Burma, inflection and tone means a great deal. With the proper inflection, the sentence, “Ma ma ma ma ma” means “Help the horse, a mad dog is coming.” ● In America, Rice Krispies say “snap crackle and pop” but in Sweden they say “piff paff puff” and in South Africa they say “knap knaetter knak” and in Germany “knisper knasper knusper.” ● The Russian word for hurry is bystro. When Russian soldiers occupying Paris in 1814 sat down in French bars, they’d shout out “Bystro! Bystro!” Eventually bistro came to mean a small tavern or bar.

9106 SR 160 • Bidwell, OH ● "My father taught me all I know about working the grill -- even though it was his job! The tip that's served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it lifts away from the grill. If it's sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling." -- JoAnn ● "Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a good-quality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I find it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!" -- B.F. in Illinois ● Grilled meats will be moister and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes after you take them off the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil. ● "It's best to clean a grill just after cooking, but if you weren't able to, that's OK. When faced with a messy grill surface, just preheat, then clean. The heat will burn off drippings and make it easier to scrub." -- R.T. in Florida ● You should never use a cooking spray on your grill. Instead, soak a paper towel in oil and use your tongs to oil the grill surface. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475 or e-mail JoAnn at heresatip@yahoo.com.
Q: Due to a recent death, I have inherited a house filled with antiques and collectibles. Although I need to liquidate the estate, I have no idea of values. What do you suggest? -- Cynthia, Soulard, Mo. A: I went through this same situation when my mother died several years ago. She had lived in the same house for a number of decades and had filled it with almost everything imaginable. My sister and I were overwhelmed. We began by contacting and hiring a good certified appraiser so we had a better idea of what to keep, what to sell and what to discard. That is, perhaps, what you should do first. Don't rely on a neighbor or someone who claims they know about antiques and collectibles, but a certified appraiser. The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is one of the leading groups in this country and can help you find certified professionals near you. Contact is 11109 Sunset Hills Rd., Suite 310, Reston, VA 20190, 800-2728358. To underscore the importance of hiring an appraiser, let me share a story. Several weeks ago, a reader contacted me with four older rugs. She had been offered $1,500 for the four rugs but suspected they might be worth more. She hired an appraiser, who discovered the rugs were Navajo and from the 1920s. To cut to the chase, her rugs were valued at $35,000, not the $1,500 she had been offered. Although an appraisal is not free, it can be an extremely valuable investment in the long run. Q: I recently purchased a piece of Hull pottery at a yard sale. It is a 9-inch vase in the Mardi Gras pattern. What can you tell me about this pattern, and is it worth more than the $35 I paid for it. -- Betty, Tyler, Texas A: The vases were originally created for chain stores and florists, according to "Warman's Hull Pottery: Identification and Price Guide" by David Doyle. Most of the pieces I've seen are identified with a sticker, not the usual impression in the mold. Doyle believes your vase is valued in the $75 to $100 range, so if your piece is in good condition, you made a good buy.

MINI ABC REFRIGERATOR MAGNETS Cut poster board in 2-1/2-inch-by-2-1/2-inch squares. Write an alphabet letter freehand on each square with a marker. Or, go to your word-processing program on your computer, find your favorite font and print out letters the size of the squares. Look for creative fonts on programs specifically designed for scrapbooking or making stationery and greeting cards. Cut out and glue the printed letters to the squares. Decorate the handwritten or printed letters with craft supplies, small beads, buttons, ribbon, glitter, paints in squeeze bottles, or simply color them with crayons and markers. Attach a piece of self-sticking magnetic strip (available at hardware and craft stores) on the back of each letter. Make duplicates of common letters so that you'll have plenty on hand for displaying a word or even a complete sentence on your refrigerator door. Store extras in a small box. Herbed Chicken Cutlets with Mustard Sauce
GIANT ABC's Draw and cut out large block alphabet letters on 12-inchby-12-inch pieces of poster board, one for each letter. If you wish, you may start with just a few letters, such as the letters of your child's name. Take the first letter you have cut out and tell your child that you are going to look for things that begin with the sound of that letter. Decorate the top of each letter by clipping pictures from magazines or collecting small items and gluing them to the corresponding letter. For example, glue leaves you collect on a fall walk to an "L," buttons to a "B" and a real zipper on a "Z." Apply a coat of lipstick to your child's lips and let her smother the letter "K" with kisses. For the letter "J," cut the letter into several pieces. Reattach the pieces with brass paper fasteners to make flexible joints. We covered our "J" with junk from the kitchen junk drawer! Save your collection of these creative letters and practice the sounds again and again.

Adjusting a Pilot Light Q: I have an older gas furnace in my home upstairs that works very well, but I haven't had it maintained it in a few years. I think the pilot light looks weak, but there's no setting for a higher flame. How can I improve the pilot light flame? -- Nancy in Buffalo, N.Y. A: There is a way to control the height of the pilot light flame. Next to the "Pilot" indicator on the furnace's control switch, there is a small screw located near the pilot light-thermocouple assembly. I'll typically shine a small flashlight and use a magnifying glass to read the imprinted type on the control housing to make sure that's the right screw. With the pilot light burning, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to carefully turn the screw one way and then the other, watching the pilot light to see if it gets stronger or weaker. The flame should be angling toward a nearby object that looks like a small vertical pipe: This is called the thermocouple, an important safety device. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple detects it and shuts the valve supplying gas to the pilot. The pilot flame should touch the thermocouple at a specific level. If the flame is blue and weak, and barely
reaches the thermocouple, it needs to be stronger. If it extends well above the thermocouple, it's too strong. If the flame covers the top of the thermocouple and burns steadily with a yellow tip, that's just about right. What if the pilot light won't stay lighted? If the assembly looks OK, turn off the gas supply at the nearest valve and try heating the thermocouple using a match for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then relight the pilot. If that doesn't work, replace the thermocouple by carefully unscrewing it from the control housing using an open-ended wrench, being careful not to ding or bend the supply pipe or the pilot-light assembly. Install a new thermocouple by screwing it in, heating it up a bit, and then lighting the pilot. Keep in mind that this task can be a little frustrating, because you're almost always working in a cramped, hard-to-access spot. Be patient and take frequent breaks if necessary, rather than compromise safety or damage the unit. HOME TIP: Make sure you know exactly where the main shutoffs for your home's gas, water and electrical supply are located, and that you know how to turn them off in an emergency. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

How Are Your Computer Skills? To help with the claims backlog, the Department of Veterans Affairs wants you to file your claims online. So says a new release. The claims will be decided faster, officials say. The VA's eBenefits portal online has been merged with the Veterans Benefits Management System (VBMS) at all the regional offices. On a computer you'll be able to walk through the "interview-style application" with drop-down menus and pre-populated data fields. You can, they say, file your claims online just like you do your taxes. You'll be able to upload digital images of records and evidence. And if you're like many older veterans, you have no idea what all that means. Hint: If you're going to file a claim and want help with the computer end of things, get a local Veterans Service Organization to go online and open your file. (You file an electronic power of attorney.) Since the benefits will date from whenever your file was started, that should be your first step. Once you open your online file and start plugging in information, you have one year to finish it up. Your original date of claim will be kept in your file. Study up on the Fully Developed Claim (where you state that you have no other information to add), because those receive priority in processing, and get all your information in hand. In my opinion, if the VA wants to help the backlog of claims, it needs to hire more people to scan the documents into VBMS that come in the traditional way. Still, if you're up for online filing, you'll need an eBenefits account, which means you need to complete a remote verification process or visit a VA regional office. Call 1-800-827-1000, option 7, if you already receive benefits by direct deposit. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

GOD BLESS EVERYONE!
Exercise Study Is Game Changer Studies have shown that seniors need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week to help guard against heart disease and stroke, even diabetes. Previous guidelines said that we needed to have that moderate-intensity activity spread out over most days of the week. Researchers of a new study wanted to know whether it mattered how often we exercised, or it if was even important to get that exercise every day. What they learned might be a game changer for many of us who don't want to make exercise a daily event or even work out for long blocks of time: It doesn't matter whether we do it all at once, or in small blocks of 10 minutes, or somewhere in between, as long as we get in our 150 minutes each week. They used more than 2,000 participants who agreed to wear accelerometers on their wrist to monitor their every move for a week. While the participants represented a wide range of ages, it was thought that the results applied to seniors, as the oldest participants were up to 79 years of age. That's not to say we should forget about muscle building. Cardio for the heart is one thing, but muscles keep us upright, strong and balanced. We can get our cardio in pushing a lawn mower or riding a bike, anything that accelerates the heart rate, according to the information for older adults on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. For muscle-strengthening activities for the major muscle groups on two or more days a week, the CDC recommends lifting weights, working with resistance bands, heavy gardening and yoga -- whatever works the back, chest, shoulders, arms, legs and hips. This should make it much easier to stay in shape!
