THE BASIC FACTS ● The skin is the largest organ in the body and accounts for 15 to 20 percent of body weight. The skin serves four purposes: to protect the body from injury and invasion; to sense the surrounding environment; to regulate metabolism by storing fat and controlling salt and water content through perspiration; and to control temperature. ● The skin is a very efficient temperature control device. When you are hot, blood flow to your skin increases and you start sweating. As your sweat evaporates, it cools the blood in your skin. When you’re too cold, the opposite happens: blood flow to the skin is reduced so that it won’t contact the cold air and lose heat. Sometimes the skin sacrifices itself through frostbite in order to keep your blood warm. ● The skin of an average adult human if peeled off and laid flat would measure about 10 square feet. The epidermis, which is the top layer of skin, is about twice as thick as a piece of paper. The cells of the skin are some of the most active in the entire body.

FAST FACT Cells in muscles and nerves never die. On the other hand, cells in the skin and the gut live only 18 hours before dying. White blood cells live for two weeks; red blood cells for one month; and liver cells two months. THE WHYS AND WHEREFORES ● Researchers theorize that one of the reasons humans walk upright instead of on all fours is because it is cooler. Walking upright reduces contact with the hot desert floor, exposes less skin to direct sunlight, and allows air to circulate more freely around the body. Humans don’t have hairy fur because on the African savanna, heat retention was not necessary. The loss of heavy fur reduced the need for water in a desert climate. ● Vitamin D acts as a catalyst, producing proteins that allow minerals such as calcium to move through the intestinal membrane and into the cells. Vitamin D cannot be formed unless it is activated by ultraviolet light. Sunlight does not contain vitamin D; it only activates it. Cats and dogs, when they lick their fur, ingest body fat that has been irradiated on their fur. This serves as a source of vitamin D. Black skin acts as protection against sunburn and skin cancer, while white skin allows enough ultraviolet light to pass through the skin in cold climates where people wear heavy clothing most of the year and their exposure to sunlight is limited. ● Oriental people have an extra flap of skin on their eyelids which gives them a slant-eyed appearance. Why? Anthropologists theorize that it protects against cold and glare, helping them cope with bitter, cold winters. Their noses are flat to minimize exposure and reduce risk of frostbite. Their nostrils are narrow, which helps warm up cold air. Their faces have an extra layer of fat to act as insulation, and a layer of fat on the eyelids also acts as a barrier to the cold.

Tethering Your Dog DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My boxer and I just moved downtown. I love the convenience of walking to the stores, but I can't bring Jackson in with me. Is it safe to tie him up outside, or should I leave him behind when shopping? -- Tom L., Tampa, Fla. DEAR TOM: Bringing Jackson along is a judgment call on your part. First and foremost, is he comfortable in an urban environment yet? The noise and crowds can cause even the best-trained dog to become nervous and antsy. Second, how does your dog interact with other canines? If Jackson is well-socialized and amiable, "turf wars" are less likely to occur. Third -- and this is a daily consideration -- are the destinations you want to take him to safe enough to tie him outside?

There are two preparatory steps to take here. First, get Jackson used to the city and his place in it. Take him for walks and incorporate training sessions into them, especially sit-stay sessions. Make sure that he will stay quietly, without getting restless, for several minutes. Next, before taking Jackson on your daily errands, go on a scouting expedition of your own. At each stop, ask yourself the following questions: ● Is there a safe, sturdy place to tether him, so that he doesn't trip pedestrians or go into the street? ● Can you see him at all times when you're in the store? ● How do pedestrians and customers react to other dogs that are passing or are tethered nearby? Note all these factors, and any others that you think will be a concern, and design a "Jackson shopping trip" that will let him come along with you on at least a few errands of short duration.

Welcome to Goose Tips! With the start of school just around the corner we find ourselves in a panic trying to prepare everything our kids will need to be a standout success. A healthy lunch will keep your kids going throughout the day and including a few fun twists on the regular lunch box will ensure no trades in the cafeteria. Thinking outside the lunch-box will give your kids something to look forward to and provide them the much needed nutrients and vitamins for staying sharp in the classroom. About food safety: lightweight, freezable, cold packs or frozen juice boxes enable you to send the kids to school with perishables such as pasta salad, egg salad, meat sandwiches, yogurt, tuna, and more. Whole wheat tortillas, pita bread or crackers will give your standard lunch an extra boost. Also, sending cut fruits with a fun dip will give them a nutritious dessert. You’ve heard this before, but a little note from you tucked into a lunch once in a while is a comfort. Keep notes small enough so kids don’t have to haul out a long, loving letter from home in front of the rest of the lunchroom. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! Hungry for more? Find this, and other great tips on our Facebook page. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our
food doesn’t.

SUNBURNS Sun is bad for your skin. The redness of a sunburn means that your skin has actually been injured and the damage doesn’t disappear when the redness does. It accumulates. Even if you’re well tanned, sunlight will still cause your skin to eventually become tough, dry, and leathery. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight also promote skin cancer because they impair the immune cells the same cells that usually attack cancer cells. Many people, when they get a sunburn, say, “Oh, it’ll turn into a tan in a few days.” But exposure to sunlight activates the pigment which takes about three days to reach the surface of the skin, resulting in a tan. So it’s not the burn turning tan, it’s just the pigment finally showing up. Unlike a tan, a sunburn shows up immediately. Some light-skinned people can burn in 10 to 20 minutes. MADE IN THE SHADE When a friend of Harvey Schakowsky developed skin cancer, Schakowsky was alarmed. He learned that one way to prevent skin cancer is by wearing protective clothing. “What IS protective clothing?” he asked. Nobody knew. So he decided to look into it. Testing different fibers, he found that a typical cotton T-shirt will block only 50 percent of harmful rays from the sun. After some experimenting, he developed a fabric that blocks 99 percent of ultraviolet B radiation and 93 percent of ultraviolet A rays. It’s made of a synthetically woven nylon which is treated with a patented chemical substance. Schakowsky is marketing the line as Solarweave, selling hats, jackets, and shirts. He would like to see all sports players wearing his weave. He’s also pushing for all clothing to be labeled telling consumers what protection, if any, it offers. ~QUOTE~ “I never expected to see the day when girls would get sunburned in the places they do today.” -Will Rogers

● On Aug. 22, 1776, the British arrive at Long Island -- between Gravesend and New Utrecht -- with 24,000 men, and on Sept. 15 captured New York City. It would remain in British hands until the end of the war. ● On Aug. 20, 1862, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley publishes a blistering editorial, "The Prayer of Twenty Millions," calling on President Abraham Lincoln to declare emancipation for all slaves. Unbeknownst to Greeley, Lincoln was already moving in the direction of emancipation. ● On Aug. 24, 1873, William Henry Jackson becomes the first person to photograph Colorado's elusive Mount of the Holy Cross, providing reliable proof of its existence. Two deep snow-filled ravines at 90-angles form a large cross on the steep northeast face of a 14,000-foot mountain peak. ● On Aug. 19, 1909, the first race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana, now the home of the Indianapolis 500. The track's surface of crushed rock and tar proved a disaster, breaking up and causing the deaths of two drivers, two mechanics and two spectators. ● On Aug. 21, 1935, the Swing Era begins with Benny Goodman's triumphant Palomar Ballroom performance in Los Angeles. When his relatively staid arrangements began to lose the young crowd, Goodman pulled out upbeat, syncopated rhythm arrangements -- to the crowd's immense delight -- and swing was born. ● On Aug. 25, 1950, in anticipation of a crippling strike by railroad workers, President Harry Truman issues an executive order putting America's railroads under the control of the U.S. Army. The railroad strike lasted for 21 months. He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants when the United Steel Workers union struck later in the year. ● On Aug. 23, 1989, as punishment for betting on baseball, Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose accepts a settlement that includes a lifetime ban from the game. Rose continued to proclaim his innocence, but in 2004, Rose published "My Prison Without Bars," in which he finally confessed to gambling on the Reds.

● If you're an average person having an average dream, it will last about 20 minutes. ● It was Irishman Cedric Gibbons who designed the Oscar statuette given to the recipients of the annual Academy Awards. Interestingly, Gibbons moved to Hollywood and worked for MGM as an art director and set designer, and his work earned him 11 of the Oscars that he himself designed. ● Those who study such things say that bats always turn to the left when exiting a cave. ● You probably think you know that bears love honey -after all, popular culture is full of images of bears going after a hive. The bears do, in fact, eat the honey, but they're really after the bees, their pupae and their larvae. ● There are more than 2,000 species of plants that contain some form of cyanide. ● If you are a logophile, you might know that the word "obstreperous" means "noisy and difficult to control." You probably don't realize, though, that the noun most likely to follow the word "obstreperous" is "teenager." But I doubt you'll be surprised. However, researchers have noted that when the nerves that supply feeling to a patch of skin is cut, that patch of skin becomes permanently numb-- and it also ceases to become wrinkled when it is wet. It also loses its ability to sweat. Scientists now theorize that wrinkled skin allows for a better grip in wet situations. Huntergatherers operating in wet environments would find this advantageous. ● There are no muscles in your fingers. Your fingers are controlled by muscles and tendons in your palm, wrist, and forearm. ● The wrinkles on the backs of the knuckles of your fingers are the places where the skin is attached to the tendons that move the fingers. (This prevents the skin from moving around like a rubber glove when hands are used for gripping and twisting.) If for some reason the finger joints cease moving, the wrinkles disappear. ● The skin on the palm of your hand is unable to tan. THE DIMPLE DEVICE Patent #560,351 was issued in 1896. It was a device for producing dimples. The rig resembled a hand drill and it was used to “massage the cellular tissues surrounding the spot where the dimple is to be produced.” All one needed to do was merely to put the “knob C of the arm A on the selected spot on the body, the extension D, together with the cylinder F, put in position, then while holding the knob N with one hand the brace ‘I’ must be made to revolve on the axis X. The cylinder F serves to make the skin surrounding the spot malleable.” This contraption was also handy for “nurturing and maintaining dimples already existing” in case you were worried about them disappearing.

WOMEN IN HISTORY: EMMA EDMONDS ● Sarah Emma Edmondson was born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1841. As a young woman, she fled an abusive home situation and changed her name to Emma Edmonds. She wanted to cross the border into the U.S so she dressed as a man and changed her name to Franklin Thompson. The disguise was so successful that she ended up enlisting in the Union army at the start of the Civil War, retaining the alias Franklin Thompson. ● She was an excellent soldier and served in many capacities. She worked as a mail carrier, nursing attendant, orderly, and stretcher bearer. She stood with her regiment at Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Manassas. But her greatest contribution was as a spy. ● She had many disguises. Once she disguised herself as an Irish peddler woman, claiming she was selling apples and soap to the soldiers. This afforded her access to the Confederate camps, where she chatted with her customers and gathered intelligence about upcoming campaigns. Another time she dyed her hair and skin black using berries, soot, and silver nitrate and got a job as a black laundress in a Confederate camp. She just happened to be standing next to a Confederate officer when a packet of important papers fell out of his pocket unnoticed, and she safely delivered the valuable information to her Union superiors. ● One of her most successful episodes of espionage came when she again disguised herself as a male slave by dying her skin. The Confederates put her to work on the fortifications at Yorktown, Virginia. She worked hard and made many sketches of the fortifications which were then smuggled to Union headquarters. The information she gave greatly assisted General McClellan in capturing the town. Not wanting to seek medical attention from the army for fear of discovery, she left her comrades in mid-April, never to return. “Franklin Thompson” was subsequently charged with desertion. ● When she recovered from the malaria, she wanted to return to the army, but was afraid to do so after seeing “WANTED” posters listing Franklin Thompson as a deserter. Instead, she dropped her male disguise and went to work as a nurse. ● She wrote and published her memoirs, Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, the first edition being released in 1864. It sold well, to the tune of 175,000 copies. Edmonds donated the profits from her book to various soldiers’ aid groups. She subsequently married and had three children. ● In 1876, she attended a reunion of the 2nd Michigan and was warmly received by her surprised comrades. They joined with her in petitioning the government to have the charge of desertion removed from her military records, and supported her application for a military pension. After an eight year battle and an Act of Congress, “Franklin Thompson” was cleared of desertion charges and awarded a pension of $12 per month in 1884. ● In 1897, Edmonds was admitted into the Grand Army of the Republic, the only woman member of this organization of Union Civil War vets. One year later, on September 5, 1898, Emma Edmonds died at her home in La Porte, Texas. In 1901, she was re-buried with military honors at Washington Cemetery in Houston.

In the wee hours of early morning, the sleepy clerk put the carbon papers in backwards. ● Summertime to schooltime can be quite a transition for some kids. Begin setting a regular routine well before the first day of school. At least a week before (two if you can), have your kids go to bed at a regular time and wake as if they were going to school. Challenge them to complete their morning routine in time to "catch the bus" to a playground breakfast date. -- JoAnn

It's said that Cline originally hated the song as done by writer Willie Nelson until her producer turned it into a ballad. 3. "Stoned Love," in 1970. Some radio stations wouldn't play the song, fearing it was about drug use. 4. "Everyday People," in 1968. 5. "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," a 1980 hit by Billy Joel. The song takes a cynical look at the music industry that demands that musicians stay young and hip. The singer refuses to change.

Q: I have a creamer in the shape of a cow. I bought it at a church sale and paid $35 for it. -- Mark, Hammond, La. A: I'm not sure what your question is, but I must tell you that many of the "cow creamers" have been reproduced, and most generally sell for less than $20. To determine if your creamer is authentic and older, show it to an established antiques dealer in your area for his or her opinion. For current values, I recommend "The Antique Trader Kitchen Collectibles Price" edited by Kyle Husfloen. There are several pages featuring creamers with current values. Q: I have a collection of cigarette silks that were given away as premiums, probably during the 1920s. Is there someone I can contact about them? The ones I have represent international flags. -- Bill, Flagstaff, Ariz. A: Robert Forbes is a serious collector of tobacco memorabilia and has written several books on the subject. He might be able to advise you. His address is P.O. Box 62, DuPont, WA 98373. Check out his excellent reference "American Tobacco Silks, Flannels, and Leathers," which can ordered from him. Q: My parents were married in 1953 and received a set of sterling flatware in the "Bridal Veil" pattern. What can you tell me about it? -- Susan, Westminster, Colo. A: Your pattern was crafted by the International Silver Company and introduced in 1950. The company was formed in 1898 in Meriden, Conn., by a group of independent silversmiths. The association eventually included several additional companies including Rogers Brothers, Derby Silver, Meriden Britannia, Webstar and Wilcox, and others. Although this isn't one of the more expensive patterns, it is certainly a handsome one. Q: I have a set of six volumes of "Nation's Heritage" published by B.C. Forbes & Sons in 1949, all in fine condition. Do these books have any value, and where can I offer them for sale? -- R.C.R., Albuquerque, N.M. A: These appear to sell in the $15 to $25 range per volume in my area of the country, Phoenix. You live in a fairly large city with several excellent used bookstores. Begin there.

BACKWARDS MOVIES ● The Tarzan yell is based on a yodel Johnny Weissmuller learned from his father as a child. The yodel is played backwards and speeded up to three times its normal rate. ● Gary Cooper portrayed baseball player Lou Gehrig in the movie “The Pride of the Yankees.” The problem was that Gehrig was left-handed and Cooper was right-handed. To get around this, Cooper played his scenes wearing a baseball uniform that had the insignia sewn on backwards. He played right-handed, but then the film was flipped over as it ran through the cameras. Cooper appeared to be a natural left hander. ● Jack Palance played the gunslinger in the movie “Shane.” But Palance knew nothing about horses and a lot of horse scenes were required. Palance was nervous when mounting and dismounting, so when the director filmed him doing a perfect dismount, he used that same scene over and over in the movie and even ran it backwards whenever the script called for Palance to mount his horse. One scene called for Palance to gallop into town on his horse, but he couldn’t manage it. So the director asked him to just canter into town, but still Palance had trouble. Finally the director told Palance to just get off the horse and walk into town leading the animal. This Palance did, and it became one of the most dramatic scenes in the movie.

Herpes Is Not the End of Life
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have herpes. I am a 28-year-old woman who never previously had a venereal disease. I am shocked to have one now. I have always been careful about choosing my male partners. I can't believe this has happened to me. Will this affect my chances of having children? What do I do about having sexual relations? -- M.N. ANSWER: You have to put herpes infection in perspective. Many people are infected. It's estimated that 50 million Americans have the virus. All of them are free to marry and have children. As for sexual relations, be honest with your partners about having been infected. You should not have relations when you have a recurrent outbreak. Recurrences lessen in frequency with the passage of time. It still is possible to transmit the virus without a visible outbreak, but condom use then lessens the probability of passing the virus to others. The herpes virus comes in two varieties: herpes simplex virus type 1, HSV-1; and herpes simplex virus type 2, HSV-2. HSV-1 is responsible for cold sores (fever blisters). HSV-2 is the cause of genital infections. However, either virus can lead to genital infections (and cold sores). HSV-1 is becoming a more frequent cause of genital infections. Skin-to-skin contact is the method of transmission. A first outbreak of genital herpes may cause fever, headache, muscle pain, pain on urination and enlargement of groin lymph nodes. In men, an outbreak of small blisters
appears on the penis. In women, the same happens in the vagina and on the external genitals. The blisters turn into sores. The sores heal in one to two weeks. Some infected people never have any visible manifestations of infection, but they are able to transmit the virus. About one-third of people never experience a recurrence. Another third have less than three outbreaks a year. The final third have more than three yearly outbreaks. People can spread the virus even when there are no obvious signs of infection. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex) shorten an outbreak. If recurrences are frequent, these medicines can be used on a daily basis to suppress them. The booklet on herpes clarifies its mysteries. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am celebrating my 75th birthday in two months. Up to now, I have had mammograms every year, sometimes every two years. Can I stop? -- W.B. ANSWER: The benefits of mammograms for women between the ages of 50 and 69 are not disputed. When to start them and when to stop them are matters that stir up debates. Many would like to see a directive for beginning mammograms at age 40. A sensible approach to your question about stopping is this: a woman older than 70 should continue to have mammograms if that woman has 10 more years of expected life. Your doctor can give you an idea of what your life expectancy is.
It all started with putting lawn chairs in the front yard. Maren and Mike Levad wanted to get to know their neighbors who, like them, hibernate during long Minnesota winters. So when spring came last year, they moved lawn chairs from the backyard to the front, hoping to stir up casual conversations when people pushing strollers and walking dogs passed by. "Within days, neighbors on both sides of us did the same, and the simple idea rippled down the block," said 32-yearold Maren. "This summer, we were inspired to celebrate our growing friendships and host monthly Thursday frontyard get-togethers." Keeping it simple is key. "In June, we gathered for food and fun after work from 5-7," said Maren. "I put out easy appetizers and beverages on a picnic table, and our 3-yearold Eliza helped bring out fun stuff for all ages -- from bubbles, sidewalk paint and dress-up clothes to croquet. Eliza reminded me that no party is complete without music," she added. Are you inspired to celebrate community and hang with the locals? Start now and plan a non-fussy gathering before summer is out. Here are more tips: SPREAD THE WORD: Make fliers on colored paper with date, time and location. A theme is extra-special, such as "Front Yard Olympics" or "Corn Feed." Let kids decorate the invitations with drawings or stamps. SET THE SCENE: Place a blooming flowerpot from your porch on the middle of a picnic table for an instant centerpiece. Tie a rope between trees or posts near the entry to your yard and use clothespins to hang a welcome sign and kid artwork. Use "outside" toys, games and sports equipment for active fun on the lawn. PREP SIMPLE SNACKS: Serve food and drinks on large trays for no-fuss transport out of your kitchen and into the yard. Choose easy, fresh eats to serve, such as chilled watermelon slices, ripe and tasty peaches, apricots and plums. Fill large bowls with fresh popcorn. Sip easy-to-prepare beverages and lots of ice water. For a refreshing punch that sparkles, mix pink lemonade with club soda in seconds. Add ice and float lemon slices. Stack paper cups next to the beverages, and let kids decorate them with stickers to identify their own cups. When the idea takes root, make it a potluck at the end of the summer and ask neighbors to bring food, drinks and activities to share.

Scanned Claims Not Up to Speed The Department of Veterans Affairs has converted more than 30 percent of disability claims into digital files, according to a recent VA report. So far, 165 million pages have been scanned and uploaded by contractor Systems Made Simple from paper, photos, faxes, DVDs and flash drives. Those files now are at the fingertips of claims raters, and finishing up claims should move along faster. But results so far are mixed, and success in speeding up the process depends on the region of the country. Here are a few locations compared with a few months ago: --White River Junction, Vt., had 834 veterans waiting an average of 239 days. Wait time for first claims was at 559 days. Now there are 869 veterans waiting an average of 193 days, with 525 of them over the 125-day mark and 183 waiting over one year. First-time claim average wait is still 559 days. --Lincoln, Neb., had 2,560 veterans, with 695 over 125 days. Average wait time was 143 days. Now there are 3,002 veterans waiting, 841 of them over 125 days, with an average wait time of 106 days. --Fargo, N.D., had 1,122 veterans with 375 waiting more than the 125 days. Average wait time was 131 days. Now Fargo is up to 1,357 veterans with 395 of them waiting over 125 days, but the average wait time is down to 105 days. --St. Petersburg, Fla., had 50,492 veterans waiting an average of 319 days. Of those, 34,860 were over the 125 days. Now there are 49,928 veterans waiting an average 233 days. Of those, 35,734 are over 125 days and 11,091 veterans have waited over one year. To reach its goal of claims being processed in 125 days, the VA has a very long way to go. An Exhausting Proposition Q: When I get out of the shower, the bathroom is completely fogged up, even when the exhaust fan is running. What's the point of having a bathroom exhaust fan if it doesn't clear the air? -- Kurt C., Huntsville, Ala. A: Good question. If a bathroom exhaust fan doesn't do the job it's advertised to do, what's the point of having one? The exhaust fan serves a good purpose. It draws moist air out of the bathroom, minimizing damage to wallpaper, baseboards, the ceiling and anything else that isn't sealed against water. However, if a "fog" lingers for more than five minutes after a shower, the fan isn't doing its job. The problem could be a blocked exhaust duct, an ailing fan motor or a unit that's not large enough to clear the entire room. In every case, the unit is not pulling enough air out of the bathroom. An exhaust fan should remove as many cubic feet of air each minute as the number of square feet of the bathroom's floor space. Clean dust and debris from the unit and air ducts. If cleaning the unit doesn't help, consider replacing it. Switch off the unit at the circuit box, then remove the front grille. Use a circuit tester to make sure no power is coming through the wires attached to the fan motor. Do this by placing one probe of the tester against each
connector, then placing the second probe against the grounding screw on the fan housing. Don't touch the bare wires with your fingers. If the tester glows at any point, go back to the circuit box and turn off the correct switch. Remove the mounting screws and pull the fan out of the wall or ceiling cavity. Disconnect the vent hose and household wiring to free the unit, then set it aside. Next, measure the fan's wall or ceiling cavity and record it. Measure the square footage of the bathroom, as well. Take those figures and the fan assembly to the homeimprovement store and purchase a fan that works best for the room's square footage. Make sure the new fan's exhaust port matches the size of the old exhaust port. Install the new fan in the old cavity, if possible (a larger unit may require you to increase the size of the cavity). Attach the fan housing to the stud or joist, avoiding the nail holes of the old unit. Test the household wiring to make sure the power is off before attempting to connect them to the new unit. Then, follow the manufacturer's instructions to hook up the wires. Connect the vent hose to the new unit's exhaust port, replace the grille cover and switch on the power at the circuit box. HOME TIP Use caution when working with electrical products. Use a circuit tester to make sure the power is completely off, and don't touch bare wiring with your fingers! Three-hundred million dollars a year. That's how much money seniors lose in one scam alone, the Jamaican lottery scam. The average loss is between $60,000 and $70,000 per victim. Even worse is that when scams are reported, nothing much is done, at least on the federal level. Any efforts have been scattered and ineffective. Now two U.S. senators have put forth legislation designed to help. Susan Collins of Maine and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota have introduced The Seniors Fraud Protection Act. Its purpose is threefold: educating seniors and their families about fraud schemes, improving the complaint system for victims of scams, and enhancing the monitoring of such schemes. The Federal Trade Commission would be directed to monitor and investigate possible scams and to create a special seniors website for information and complaints. Best of all, those complaints would no longer be ignored. The information would be made available to law enforcement. While there are too many scams targeting the elderly, the Jamaica lottery scam is particularly nasty. If the scammers don't get immediate cooperation from the victim, they employ high-tech threat tools such as Internet satellite street-view pictures of the victim's home. Even if the victim does pay (the worst possible thing to do), they come after more money, threatening to burn down the house. They can look up the victim in online databases and learn the name of relatives. Your best bet to fight these scammers is to protect yourself: --Use your caller ID and don't answer calls from the 876 area code. --If the "prize" sounds too good to be true, it is. --Never wire funds to anyone you don't know. --If someone wants you to pay fees or "taxes" in advance to collect a prize, don't. --Allow yourself to BE RUDE. Hang up on anyone suspicious. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible.
