TIDBITS® TAKES A RIDE ALONG
ROUTE 66 by Kathy Wolfe
Looking for an interesting vacation idea? Take the ultimate road trip with Tidbits along Route 66, one of the original U.S. Highways. Let’s visit some of the spots on the path, and learn the history of what has been called the Main Street of America. ● In 1926, Route 66 was officially commissioned, a 2,448-mile (3,940-km) road from Chicago to Los Angeles, winding through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. At the end of that year, just 800 miles (1,287 km) were paved. Road signs didn’t go up until the following year. It wasn’t until 1938 that the entire route was paved, the first highway to have this completed. ● Because the route passed through hundreds of small towns, there was a dramatic increase in the number of “mom and pop” businesses, service stations, roadside diners, and motels. America’s first drive-through restaurant, Red’s Giant Hamburg opened along the road in Springfield, Missouri. The Cozy Dog Drive Inn, still in operation today in Springfield, Illinois, offered some of the route’s first fast food and the introduction of the corn dog. The first McDonald’s opened in 1945 in San Bernardino at the end of the road, offering 19_ cheeseburgers and 20_ malts. It’s now a museum and Route 66 historic site. Turn the page for more!

ROUTE 66 (continued) ● During the massive dust bowl storms of the 1930s in the Midwest, when millions of tons of topsoil were blown away, over 200,000 people migrated to California along Route 66 in search of a better life. John Steinbeck wrote of the migration in his 1939 book The Grapes of Wrath, dubbing the highway the “Mother Road” and the road of flight for “refugees from dust and shrinking land.” ● In the 1950s, Route 66 became a vacation destination with a wide variety of roadside attractions. Teepee-shaped motels, trading posts, and tourist traps catered to those visiting caves, canyons, mountains, and deserts. The highway ran through Arizona’s Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, and near the Grand Canyon. During the 1940s, the Wigwam Village chain of motels sprang up along the highway. With individual cabins built in the form of teepees, there were seven original locations. Two of the three remaining motels are located on Route 66, in Holbrook, Arizona and Rialto, California. ● Full-service gas stations popped up along the length of the route. One major company even took its name from the highway. In 1927, the Phillips Company’s newly-developed highoctane gasoline was tested along U.S. Highway 66 in Oklahoma. As the automobile reached its top speed, it was noted that the number was 66 mph (106 km/hr), a fast pace for that era. The new fuel was named Phillips 66, and the company’s shield logo was designed to resemble the road sign. ● Near Amarillo, Texas, travelers can visit Cadillac Ranch, a row of 10 Cadillacs with the tailfins reaching to the sky. The cars, ranging from 1949 to 1963, are half-buried, nose first in the Texas countryside, the brainstorm of a Texas patron of the arts. It’s the only place in Texas where it is legal to spray graffiti on an object.

Outdoor Pet Safety DEAR PAW'S CORNER: You've posted a lot of warnings about keeping pets indoors and out of hot cars during the summertime. However, I have two large dogs that have always been "outside" dogs. They seem to tolerate the heat well, but are there any precautions I should take? -- Carol in Tallahassee, Fla. DEAR CAROL: It's important to monitor pets that are outside, whether they are out there for a few minutes or for most of the day. Even on moderately warm days, bearing the heat can be a struggle. Make sure that your dogs have a well-shaded area with good ventilation where they can rest out of the hot sun. Cool, fresh water should always be nearby -- on hot days, check their water dishes frequently. Check your dogs often to make sure they're not showing signs of heat injury or heat stroke. from seemingly normal to serious distress, particularly in hot temperatures. A dry tongue, excessive panting and appearing to be in a stupor are serious warnings signs; if your dogs show these, or have a high body temperature or go into seizures, contact the veterinarian immediately. Don't put cold water or ice packs on a dog showing signs of heat stroke; bring it to the emergency vet right away. Consider creating a space for your dogs in an airconditioned part of the house for days that are especially hot for your area. Bring them to it during the hottest part of the day, and let them back outside in the evening and morning. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. With the start of school just around the corner we find ourselves in a panic trying to prepare everything our kids will need to be a standout success. A healthy lunch will keep your kids going throughout the day and including a few fun twists on the regular lunch box will ensure no trades in the cafeteria. Thinking outside the lunch-box will give your kids something to look forward to and provide them the much needed nutrients and vitamins for staying sharp in the classroom. About food safety: lightweight, freezable, cold packs or frozen juice boxes enable you to send the kids to school with perishables such as pasta salad, egg salad, meat sandwiches, yogurt, tuna, and more. Whole wheat tortillas, pita bread or crackers will give your standard lunch an extra boost. Also, sending cut fruits with a fun dip will give them a nutritious dessert. You’ve heard this before, but a little note from you tucked into a lunch once in a while is a comfort. Keep notes small enough so kids don’t have to haul out a long, loving letter from home in front of the rest of the lunchroom. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! Hungry for more? Find this, and other great tips on our Facebook page. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our
food doesn’t.

ROUTE 66 (continued) ● Restored to its original grandeur, the world’s largest ketchup bottle stands proudly near Collinsville, Illinois, formerly along Route 66. Built in 1949, this 170-ft.-tall (50-m) structure is actually a water tower painted like a Brooks Rich & Tangy Ketchup bottle, and could actually hold 640,000 14-oz. bottles of ketchup. The Brooks Company left the area in the 1970s. ● In 1946, songwriter Bobby Troup was on a cross-country trip from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and came up with the idea of writing a song about the journey. The result was “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” a song that became a huge hit that year for Nat King Cole. When Troup had trouble coming up with lyrics for the tune, he simply filled it with names of towns along the way, starting with the Missouri cities of St. Louis and Joplin, then on to Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Gallup, New Mexico, the Arizona communities of Winona and Kingman, and California cities Barstow and San Bernardino. Of the eight states that Route 66 passed through, Kansas is the only state not mentioned in the song. ● Interest in Route 66 was revitalized in 2006 when Pixar released the animated film Cars, which chronicled the decline of the fictional community of Radiator Springs when the oncebooming town was bypassed by the interstate. The idea of Cars was hatched after Pixar’s creative director took a cross-country road trip with his family. He based many of the film’s sites on real-life locations he encountered, including the general store in Hackberry, Arizona, and Erick, Oklahoma’s Sand Hills Curiosity Shop. The movie’s bridges resemble several along Route 66 in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. The film calls its teepee-shaped motor court the Cozy Cone Motel.

● On Aug. 30, 30 B.C., Cleopatra, queen of Egypt and lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, takes her life following the defeat of her forces against Octavian, the future first emperor of Rome. She committed suicide possibly by means of an asp, a poisonous Egyptian serpent and symbol of divine royalty. ● On Aug. 29, 1876, Charles F. Kettering, inventor of the electric self-starter, is born in Loundonville, Ohio. Kettering's inventions spread far beyond the automotive industry: He helped develop the refrigerant Freon, and took an active role in the medical industry, inventing a treatment for venereal disease, an incubator for premature infants and artificial fever therapy. ● On Aug. 27, 1908, future president Lyndon Baines Johnson is born on a farm near Stonewall, Texas. As president, Johnson pushed through the creation of Medicare/Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. ● On Aug. 26, 1959, the British Motor Corporation launches its newest car, the small, affordable Mark I Mini. The Mini went on to become one of the bestselling British cars in history. At only 10 feet long, the $800 Mini could sit four adults and had a trunk big enough for a reasonable amount of luggage. ● On Sept. 1, 1964, pitcher Masanori Murakami becomes the first Japanese man to play in U.S. baseball's major leagues. Murakami was a teenage baseball prodigy in Japan, and his left-handed sidearm delivery proved an asset in the United States. ● On Aug. 28, 1972, the U.S. Air Force gets its first ace designation since the Korean War when Captain Richard S. Ritchie and his "backseater" (radar intercept officer), Captain Charles B. DeBellevue, shoot down his fifth MiG near Hanoi. ● On Aug. 31, 1985, Richard Ramirez, the notorious "Night Stalker," is captured and nearly killed by a mob in East Los Angeles, Calif., after being recognized from a photograph shown on television and in newspapers. Ramirez was pulled from the enraged mob by police officers.

● In 2006, an 87-year-old Oregon man, Marty Alvey, lost nearly all his sight, due (unsurprisingly) to agerelated causes. This is not noteworthy. However, three years later, the same man became faint and dizzy, so he called 911. He began to feel better on the ambulance ride to the hospital, but he wanted to be checked out anyway. By the time the doctor made it to his room, Alvey's sight had been restored. Even after thorough examinations by two ophthalmologists, no cause was found. ● If you're pregnant in Switzerland, don't tell anyone the name you plan to give your baby; it's considered to bring bad luck. ● Smugglers will never stop trying to find creative ways to transport illicit goods from one part of the world to another. In 2009, a German man tried to smuggle 44 lizards out of New Zealand in his underwear; it seems that he had sewn special pockets in his undergarments specifically for the creatures. ● If a frog eats too many fireflies, it will begin to glow. ● You've probably heard or seen pictures of bioluminescent lagoons, but the bacteria that cause this phenomenon are not limited to small bays and inlets. In fact, there is a bioluminescent patch of ocean to be found off the horn of Africa. "Patch" may not be quite the right word to describe it, though; the area that glows is the same size as the state of Connecticut. ● You might be surprised to learn that the sweatiest part of the human body is not the armpits; it's the palms of the hands. *** Thought for the day: "I hate women because they always know where things are." -- Voltaire

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 ROUTE 66 (continued) ● The 1939 AAA travel directory lists Cuba, Missouri’s Wagon Wheel Cabins as one of the finest motor courts in the state. Constructed in 1934 of Ozark stone, each cabin had its own private tub or shower bath with rates of $2.50 per day for two persons. It’s still in operation today. Cuba also opened Carr’s Phillips 66 service station in 1932 to accommodate the increase of travelers along the route. ● Route 66 began its slow decline in 1953, when Oklahoma opened the Turner Turnpike between Tulsa and Oklahoma, bypassing 100 miles and each of the towns along the road. In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act, calling for a modern four-lane highway system with no intersections. Service stations and commercial businesses were prohibited at the highway access sites and within a few short years, as small towns were bypassed, businesses began to fail from lack of traffic. In 1965, the Highway Beautification Act restricted the road signs that urged travelers to pull off the exit to reach Route 66. ● Route 66 was officially decommissioned and removed from the U.S. Highway system in 1985, and was taken off road maps. Motorists can no longer drive Route 66 uninterrupted from Chicago to Los Angeles. Parts of it are the “business loop” in many cities, while other sections are state and local roads, and some are completely abandoned. Several stretches have been preserved, with some having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: GRACE KELLY The life of Grace Kelly was a fairy tale come true as she went from model to actress to princess. Follow the life of this woman who left the glitter of Hollywood behind to become Her Serene Highness, the Princess Consort of Monaco. ● Born in Pennsylvania, Grace was the daughter of the owner of the largest construction company on the East Coast. Jack Kelly had been an Olympic athlete, the winner of three gold medals in sculling. Grace’s parents were not happy with her choice to enter the field of acting. To support herself in her studies, Grace worked as a model, as well as doing commercials, her first one featuring her spraying a can of insecticide around a room. ● Before the big screen, Grace acted in several live television programs and appeared in ads for Max Factor, Lustre-Crème shampoo, Lux soap, and Old Gold cigarettes. At 21, she received her first movie role, a two-minute, 14-second appearance in the 1951 film Fourteen Hours. She caught the eye of actor Gary Cooper, and was selected to star with him in his next film High Noon. ● By her third movie Mogambo, she was a confirmed star with Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Three Alfred Hitchcock movies followed and an Academy Award for 1954’s The Country Girl. A visit to 1955’s Cannes Film Festival changed her life. It was here that she met Prince Rainier of Monaco when she was asked to do a photo shoot with him. It so happened that the prince needed a wife, because according to a 1918 treaty with France, if he did not produce an heir, the tiny principality of Monaco would revert to French rule.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 GRACE KELLY (continued) ● Grace returned to America, going right back to work on a new movie in which, coincidentally, she played the part of a princess. She began corresponding with the prince, and at the end of the year, Rainier came to America, met Grace’s family, and after three days, proposed marriage. The Kelly family was required to put up a dowry of $2 million in order for the marriage to take place. ● French law required both a civil and religious ceremony. The 40-minute civil ceremony was broadcast on April 18, 1956 from the Palace Throne Room of Monaco. That evening the couple attended the opera, where Grace was seen in a hand-embroidered silk gown embellished with 800,000 sequins and 1,500 pearls and rhinestones. ● The religious ceremony held the next day was attended by 600 guests and watched by 30 million people on television. Grace’s dress, designed and sewn by MGM Studio’s costume masters, used 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, and 125-year-old lace that had been purchased from a museum. Thirty-six seamstresses worked for six weeks to complete the gown. The couple invited the entire 3,000 adult population of Monaco to the celebration that followed. The principality’s citizens gifted the newlyweds with a cream and black Rolls Royce convertible. ● Following their seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the Prince’s yacht, the couple settled into their 15th-century mansion, where they raised three children, Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie during their 26-year marriage. In 1982, while driving on a mountain road accompanied by Stephanie, Grace suffered a stroke and lost control of the vehicle, which plunged down the mountainside. Grace died the next day from her injuries at age 52.

● Animal crackers were popular long before the familiar red circus wagon box. They were imported from England in the late 1800s, but as demand increased, U.S. factories began production. One of the original companies, Stauffer’s Biscuit Company, began in York, Pennsylvania, and is still in operation today with the same recipe. ● The National Biscuit Company (later Nabisco) began manufacturing animal crackers in 1902, and labeled them “Barnum’s Animals” after circus showman P.T. Barnum. Boxes of crackers released during the holiday season that year were designed with a string attached to hang on a Christmas tree branch. The “wheels” on the box folded out from the bottom of the box so that it could “roll” on them. Price per box was five cents. ● Nabisco has produced Barnum’s Animals continuously since 1902, with 54 different animals over the years. All crackers are produced at their Fair Lawn, New Jersey bakery, with annual sales of more than 40 million packages. They are baked in a 300-ft. (91-m) long oven for about four minutes. About 300,000 crackers are produced during a single shift at the bakery at the rate of 12,000 per minute. Thirty miles (48 km) of string are needed to attach to one day’s worth of packages, about 8,000 miles (3,000 km) a year. ● In 1958, Nabisco added new machinery that improved the appearance of animal crackers. Rotary dies actually engraved intricate details of each animal onto the cracker. Previously, they were simply stamped out of a sheet of dough by a cutter and were animal-shaped only. ● Pick up a box of Barnum’s Animals today and inside you’ll find a bear, camel, crocodile, elephant, giraffe, gorilla, horse, lion, seal, tiger, and zebra, 22 crackers in all. The only four animals that have been around since the beginning are the bear, elephant, lion, and tiger.

ANIMAL CRACKERS (continued) ● In 1930, Paramount Pictures released Animal Crackers, a zany comedy starring the four Marx Brothers, Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo. The plot revolved around a valuable painting going missing during a party honoring a famous African explorer Captain Geoffrey Spaulding, played by Groucho. The film featured one of Groucho’s most quoted lines, “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don’t know.” ● The 1935 film Curly Top featured the charming 7-year-old Shirley Temple as an orphan, who sang, “Animal crackers in my soup, monkeys and rabbits loop the loop.” The song immediately became a hit, landing a spot on the Hit Parade chart. The only glitch about this is that rabbits have never been included in a box of Barnum’s Animals. ● How do you eat an animal cracker? Studies indicate that nearly everyone bites the heads off first!

1. In 1960, three top-10 songs had the name of the same American city in the title. What city was it? Bonus: Name the three songs. 2. What artist wrote and released "Just the Way You Are." 3. Who wrote and recorded "Loves Me Like a Rock"? 4. How did "Badge" get its title? 5. Sixties songs were known for lyrics that strained to rhyme, but one song carried that to the extreme. Identify the song and artist of this lyric: "Once I had a pretty girl, her name it doesn't matter, She went away with another guy, now he won't even look at her."
1. "Walkin to New Orleans," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "New Orleans." 2. Billy Joel, in 1977. Background vocals were done by soul/ gospel group The Dixie Hummingbirds. 4. The 1969 Cream song wasn't titled until the last minute, when the scrawled word "bridge" on the sheet music was misread as "badge." 5. "Hats Off to Larry" (1961) by Del Shannon. Oddly enough, "Larry" ranked higher on the charts than his "Little Town Flirt."

Ice is nice when it's hot outside. Nothing's more refreshing than a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade or iced tea with a sprig of mint on top for a reprieve from the heat. And who doesn't love a slushie or snow cone while strolling in flipflops at an amusement park or on a boardwalk when the temps soar. Here are more icy ideas for a hot summer day to keep kids busy, creative and most of all, cool. COOL "ICE BEAD" NECKLACE This ice necklace is refreshing on a hot day whether indoors or out. Open a standard cotton bandana, fold in half, and set ice cubes in a horizontal row a few inches from the fold. Carefully roll the bandana to contain the cubes in the row, tie around your neck, and head outside to play and pick veggies in the garden. Or, simply soak a cotton bandana in cold water, ring it out so it is moist and not dripping, and pop it in the freezer. Wear it around your neck outdoors for a hike or bike ride. COOL RINK FOR PLAYTIME FUN Fill a rimmed cookie sheet or rectangular cake pan with water and freeze. Unmold and set the large ice sheet outside on a picnic table, porch or kid's activity table. Grab some mini toy penguins, polar bears or Lego characters and let them skate around the "rink" until it melts. COOL GAME TO BEAT THE HEAT Make ice cubes for each player. (For older kids and adults, use larger chunks of ice made in pint-size milk cartons.) The object of the game is to see who can melt his or her ice cube first. The ice must be touching the player's body at all times until it's completely melted. But you can't put it in your mouth! COOL ICE-CUBE PAINTING Mix water and tempera paint in tiny bowls to desired shade. Pour into ice cube trays. Or, mix directly in ice cube tray compartments. Freeze until slushie, and then add icecream sticks, wooden skewers or toothpicks for handles. They can stand at an angle. Freeze solid. Pop "paint cubes" out and use to draw colorful pictures on heavy white drawing paper until the ice melts.
This Artery Disease Is Pain in the Leg DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Since January, when I made a New Year's resolution to be more active, I have been walking daily, seven days a week. In the past month, I have pushed to walk farther and faster. I began to have pain in my right calf, so I had to slow it down again. Does this sound like arthritis to you? It runs in my family. -- B.R. ANSWER: It sounds more like peripheral artery disease, PAD, a condition that 5 percent of adults over 40 and 20 percent of those over 70 have. Peripheral artery disease is the same process that occurs in heart arteries, an obstruction to blood flow due to the buildup of cholesterol and fat on the artery wall. In the heart, it causes the chest pain of angina when a person engages in physical activity. In the legs, it causes pain in the buttocks, thighs, calves or feet when a person walks farther than usual or faster than usual. The leg muscles are not getting the amount of blood they need to support such exertion. An easy test, done in the doctor's office, provides solid evidence for the diagnosis of PAD. That test entails taking blood pressure in the arm and comparing it with blood pressure in the leg. The name of the test is the Ankle-Brachial Index, dividing the ankle pressure by the arm pressure. A number less than 0.9 denotes peripheral artery disease. Taking the ankle blood pressure requires a special instrument, one that's not available to the general public. Most doctors have it.
PAD is treated much like plugged heart arteries are treated. Keep up your walking program, and do try to increase the length and pace of your walk. Stop to rest if pain occurs, then resume walking when it leaves. Your doctor will decide if you need a medicine like Pletal (cilostazol). For large obstructions, procedures similar to ones used to open heart arteries (balloon dilation, grafts, stents) are used for PAD. Also important is an examination of your heart's circulation. People with PAD often also have coronary artery disease (CAD), plugged heart arteries. The booklet on peripheral artery disease provides the details of this common condition. To order a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 109W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My heart's desire is to have long hair. I would like it to grow to my waist or lower. I have seen pictures of singers and movie stars with such hair, but my hair doesn't grow longer than my shoulders. Is there a vitamin or medicine that promotes hair growth? -- V.T. ANSWER: Hair growth is something that is programmed in every individual. The majority of people have a twoyear hair-growth cycle. Such a cycle permits hair to grow to shoulder length. A few people have a six-year cycle. These are the people whose hair grows to the waist and even farther. I wish I had better news for you. I don't. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Q: I have a Big Little Book, "Dick Tracy's Chains of Crime." It is from the 1930s and except for a few scuffs, in good condition. I have a friend wanting to buy it from me, but I have no idea of what it is worth. -- Steve, New Paltz, N.Y. A: I found your Big Little Book referenced in several price guides. It was published in 1936, and current values range from $30 to $130 depending on condition. Q: I recently inherited an oblong dish, a cake plate and a pair of candlesticks in the Canterbury pattern made by Duncan & Miller glassware. I know nothing about this company and hope you can provide me with at least some information. -- Barbara, Tyler, Texas A: George Duncan founded the company in about 1865 in Pittsburgh. The firm became known as Duncan & Miller in 1900, but eventually was absorbed by the United States Glass Company. Many of the older designs continued to be manufactured. The Canterbury pattern was extremely popular. Your cake plate is probably worth about $25; the candlesticks, $30; and oblong relish dish, perhaps $50. Q: I would like to know the value of ... (and what followed was three typewritten pages of books, comics and other items) -- Keith, Billings, Mont. A: To research and value your several hundred items would take a great deal of time, and it is a service I don't provide. Keep in mind that a free "appraisal" is worth what you pay for it. If you truly want to know how the value of your books and collectibles, hire the services of a certified appraiser or contact dealers in the Billings area. Q: I love bells and have collected them for most of my adult life. I am now in the process of downsizing and would like your opinion of how I can begin selling some of the more common ones that I have. -- Kenneth, Sioux Falls, S.D. A: One of the better groups for collectors is the American Bell Association International, 4219 Boone Ave., New Hope, MN 55428. This is a fairly active group and sponsors annual conventions for its members, who are scattered throughout the country.

Survey Results Disheartening The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) recently conducted a survey of its members, with respondents replying to 250 questions on a variety of topics. The results, while not surprising, are disheartening. Here is a sample of the questions and responses: --Rating President Barack Obama's performance on improving lives of veterans: 44 percent said poor. The president listens to veterans: 66 percent disagreed. --Rating Congress's performance on improving lives of veterans: 55 percent said poor. Congress listens to veterans: 80 percent disagreed. --While 42 percent rated the GI Bill as good, 36 percent said there were problems with late payments. Of those, 60 percent said the VA wasn't helpful in getting the matter resolved. --When it comes to work, 16 percent were unemployed, with 45 percent of those unemployed for more than a year. --With disabilities, the stats are: PTSD 65 percent, hearing loss 47 percent and traumatic brain injury 39 percent, with mental health not far behind. --Most disheartening of all are the stats on suicide. Of the respondents, 30 percent have thought of taking their own lives, and 45 percent know a veteran who has attempted suicide. Additionally, 37 percent know a veteran who has committed suicide, and of those, 60 percent know more than one who has. --Asked why they hadn't gotten help for suicidal thoughts, two responses stood out: 43 percent were concerned it would affect their career, and 33 percent were concerned about peer perceptions. To view the rest of the information on the survey, along with the charts and graphs, go online to iava.org. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

Don't Get Tricked on Obamacare
Choosing the Right Moving Company Q: We're moving across the country soon, and for the first time can afford to have a moving company load and carry our furniture for us. However, I've heard horror stories on the news and from acquaintances that I could be cheated or have to pay much more than the original quote. Should I go with a moving company anyway? -- Bill S., Los Angeles A: There have been occasional press reports about movers that charge homeowners much more than the original quote. This isn't always the case, but as with any business transaction, a little caution goes a long way. As with any contractor job, you should get multiple quotes from several different moving companies -- at least three. A flat rate or blind estimate made over the phone should not be accepted; the moving company should send a representative to your home to find out exactly how much furniture, boxes and other items are being moved, what items need special attention and so on. You should get a quote in writing, and don't agree to it before you've gotten estimates from the other companies.
To find out how well a moving company does its job, you have a number of options today. The Better Business Bureau is a fair starting point -- you can read complaints about the company, as well as whether they've been resolved. For national companies, look at websites like Consumerist.com, which posts reader complaints and attempts to resolve or at least get an explanation about an issue from the companies involved. In major metro areas, you can check review sites like Yelp.com. While these don't usually have an area where companies can respond to complaints or disputes, you can get a general feel for the company and how it conducts business by the number and types of reviews. Once you've selected a moving company, be sure to read all the fine print before signing a moving agreement. Ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable, particularly about extra costs that are mentioned in the agreement. HOME TIP: Consider purchasing relocation insurance during a move to cover potential accidents or damage to items while they're in transit. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.
We've all heard about the coming "Obamacare," the new Affordable Care Act that will provide health insurance. The scammers have heard about it too, and are taking advantage of all the confusion -- especially with seniors. Here are some tricks that scammers might try to use on you: --You might get a phone call saying you can be one of the first to get your new health insurance card -- if you'll provide certain information. --You might be told that it's illegal not to sign up for the insurance and that you must give your personal information or you could go to jail. --You could be told that your Medicare information has to be verified and updated, or it will be canceled. They might ask for an "upfront" fee to help you sort it all out. --The scammers might try to sell you a health policy as a way of getting your credit card or bank numbers. These are all lies. The sharpies are trying to trick you into revealing your bank-account information, your Social Security number, your credit-card numbers, your address and your Medicare card number. Even if they say they're from "the government," and even if they do have some of your information, that doesn't mean it's legitimate. The government isn't going to call you to insist you sign up for Obamacare. Here are a few of the facts: --If you're already signed up with Medicare, you don't have to sign up for Obamacare. --Others who have to sign up for the insurance can start signing up in October, with it taking effect next January. Remember: These scammers are very slick and very convincing. Don't be fooled. Just hang up. Then call the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint at 1-877-382-4357.
