TIDBITS® EATS OUT AT
RESTAURANTS by Janet Spencer
About 95% of all households report that at least one family member had dined out in the last month. Come along with Tidbits as we eat out! THE RESTAURANT IS BORN ● Until the mid-1700s there were no recognizable restaurants as such. There were inns, where lodgers were fed whatever was in the stew pot that night, and there were taverns where limited food played second fi ddle to the drink, and there were places called “ordinaries” where a fi xed menu was available at a fi xed time for a fi xed price. ● In France, development of the restaurant was stymied by licensing laws. Only stewmakers were licensed to sell stew; only bakers were licensed to sell baked goods; only soupmakers were licensed to sell soup. ● In 1765 a soupmaker named Boulanger decided to challenge the licensing system, so he offered his customers lamb’s feet in white sauce. The stewmakers took him to court. ● The judge, however, decided that since lamb’s feet were not stewed meat, Boulanger was not breaking any laws. This was the fi rst inroad into the world of restaurants. Boulanger hung a sign above his shop that read in French “Come to me all whose stomachs cry out and I shall restore you.” The French word for restore is “restaurabo” and gave us the word restaurant. FAST FACTS ● August is the busiest month of the year for America’s restaurants. A typical family of four will spend more than $200 in various eating establishments in August. ● The United States now has over 250,000 restaurants, of which more than a third are franchises. The franchises account for more than 40% of all the income for restaurants. ● Americans are dining out even more often than at any previous time in our history. A survey showed that 99.4% of people who were under 30 years old typically eat out about once a week. Of the over 65 group, 87.9% had eaten out in the previous week. The survey also showed that 39.7% of all meals eaten away from home were served by a fast food outlet while only 6% of the meals were consumed at full service restaurants. ● Another survey concluded that 56% of adults eat out at a sit-down restaurant at least once a week. 7% of people eat out almost daily ● Each American eats almost 30 lbs. (13 kg) of hamburgers each year. McDonalds, the single largest chain of restaurants in the world, serves up 2,250 head of cattle per day. McDonalds has surpassed the Army as the biggest supplier of meals as well as the biggest employer of young people. ● The following dishes are the most frequently ordered by people dining out: chicken; roast beef; spaghetti; turkey; ham; shrimp; stew; meatloaf; fi sh; macaroni & cheese. YOU BE THE JUDGE ● When a food critic reviewed a restaurant, he used phrases like “a ghastly concoction” and “pretentious failures” and “green plague” and “yellow death.” The restaurant owner sued for $2 million in damages claiming that the reviewer ruined his reputation and humiliated him. If you were the judge, how would you rule? (Answer next page)

Pet-Friendly Apartments Q: I'm moving to a new city in two months, and I'm having trouble finding an apartment that will allow pets. Do you have any advice? -- Sara in Worcester, Mass. A: To pet owners looking for a new place to live, it can seem that fewer and fewer rentals allow pets of any kind. According to a recent Rent.com poll, 83 percent of pet owners surveyed said they have had at least some diffi culty fi nding a pet-friendly rental. Here are a few tips to make searching for a pet-friendly apartment easier: --Use online apartment fi nders. You can specify petfriendly rentals in your search query. --Be up front. If you have more than one pet, or an unusual pet like a reptile, tell the manager or landlord when you inquire about or tour the apartment. While some are willing to bend the rules slightly, they're not going to give you a break if they fi nd out you are hiding extra pets from them.

--Be ready to pay pet fees. Almost every rental requires a deposit for each pet, generally nonrefundable. These fees can be several hundred dollars. Be prepared to pay them, or try to negotiate a way to pay them over time. --Be a good neighbor. Pet owners must make the effort to pick up after their dog, not let pets wander unleashed, keep pets' vaccinations up to date and make sure dogs are welltrained to follow basic commands. --Be a good tenant. Pet deposits cover damage to the property done by animals, such as stains, shredded carpet and odor. Minimize this damage by housetraining pets and cleaning up messes immediately. You might even get part of your deposit back. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fl eas don't? School is only days old and already notes have come home announcing “the first bake sale of the year”. I’ll bet that I’m not the only one that has been hit already by bake sale fever and if you haven’t , don’t think you’re getting off easy. You will. For the working mom, there’s never enough time in the day. Try these easy cookies that will knock their socks off at the next bake sale. EASIEST FUDGY NUTELLA COOKIES YIELD 12 INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp All Purpose Flour 1 large egg 1 cup Nutella 1/2 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Combine flour, egg, and Nutella in a large bowl and mix together with a spoon until dough comes together and no flour lumps remain. Stir in chocolate chips until evenly mixed into the dough. 2. Make dough balls, about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. Place on cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart. Press down slightly on dough so the dough balls are more like very, very thick round disks rather than perfectly round balls. Smooth edges that may have cracked from the pressure of pushing down on the balls so that you have thick, round smooth disks. 3. Bake for about 10 minutes. Cookies should be mostly set, but might be slightly still soft in the middle. Let cookies cool on rack until completely set. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t.

YOU BE THE JUDGE The courts said the review was “degrading, malicious, and unprovoked” but that it still expressed the writer’s opinion which was protected by the Constitution. UNUSUAL RESTAURANTS ● A restaurant in Washington, D.C. opened in 1992, specializing in insect dishes. They served mealworm wontons, cricket meatloaf, candied mealworm, and cricket popcorn. Chef Mark Nevin claimed he went through some 20,000 mealworms and 8,000 crickets every two weeks. All of his dishes contained insects that had been ground into fl our or paste and no recognizable bugs or bug parts showed up in the fare. ● George Pappavlahodimitrakopoulous owned a restaurant in Lansing, Michigan in 1961. He said he’d give a free meal to anyone who could pronounce his name correctly. ● When Gordon and Jasmine Geisbrecht decided to open a new restaurant in Winnipeg in 1986, they wanted to make it really different. They decided to make toilets the theme of the restaurant. Called “The Outhouse,” toilet bowls were placed here and there in the decorating scheme, and menus featured a toilet bowl logo. Ironically enough, health inspectors suspended their license when it was found that their restroom facilities were inadequate. ANTICS & ANECDOTES ● A homeless man paying for his meal in Salt Lake City apologized for not tipping, saying, “I’m going to go rob a bank and I’ll be back.” He walked across the street, relieved First Interstate Bank of $1,200, and was arrested at the restaurant after leaving a $2 tip. ● At the New House Hotel in Wales, Chef Albert Grabham decided to hide the restaurant’s New Year’s Eve earnings in the oven. He forgot about it until he lit the oven to prepare New Year’s Day lunch.

● On Sept. 5, 1666, firefighters in London begin blowing up homes in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of a great fire through the city. By the time the fire was finally snuffed out the following day, more than 100,000 people had been left homeless. ● On Sept. 7, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the 8-foot-long American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe's flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare. ● On Sept. 6, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only 2 mph. For secrecy, production workers were told the vehicles would be used to carry water on the battlefield. The new vehicles were shipped in crates labeled "tank," and the name stuck. ● On Sept. 3, 1935, a new land-speed record is set by Britain's Sir Malcolm Campbell. On the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, Campbell and his 2,500-horsepower car Bluebird made two runs over a 1-mile course at speeds averaging 301 mph. ● On Sept. 8, 1945, U.S. troops land in Korea to begin their postwar occupation of the southern part of that nation, almost exactly one month after Soviet troops had entered northern Korea to begin their own occupation. Although the U.S. and Soviet occupations were supposed to be temporary, the division of Korea quickly became permanent. ● On Sept. 2, 1969, America's first automatic teller machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, N.Y. It wasn't until 1971 that an ATM could handle multiple functions, including providing customers' account balances.

● In the original "Star Trek" series, a pair of the false ears worn by Leonard Nimoy in the role of Spock would last only three to five days of shooting before they had to be replaced. ● I'm sure you've heard that President Richard Nixon was sometimes called "Tricky Dick," especially toward the end of his troubled career, but you may not be familiar with other nicknames he had. In college his perceived lack of a sense of humor prompted the name "Gloomy Gus," and his tendency to spend long hours sitting and studying earned him the moniker "Iron Butt." ● Records show that during the last seven months of Elvis Presley's life, he had 5,300 different medications prescribed for him. ● In 1938, Fortune magazine published a prediction that, in hindsight, turns out to have been rather egregiously off the mark: "Few scientists foresee any serious or practical use for atomic energy. They regard the atomsplitting experiments as useful steps in the attempt to describe the atom more accurately, not as the key to the unlocking of any new power." Thought for the Day: "Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it." -- Henry David Thoreau

ANTICS & ANECDOTES ● Timothy George was a busboy at a restaurant in California in 1982. When a customer was robbed in a restroom, Tim chased and captured the mugger, retrieving the stolen items. When he returned work, he was fi red. Why? For leaving work… and for fi ghting. ● In 1964, Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of President Johnson, was traveling from Cleveland to Washington, DC. Her secretary called ahead to a Howard Johnson’s restaurant to make reservations for Mrs. Johnson and her party. After they had eaten and left, a reporter interviewed the waitress. “How did it feel to serve Mrs. Johnson?” “I was pretty nervous,” replied the waitress. “Have you ever met a fi rst lady before?” inquired the reporter. “First Lady?” cried the waitress. “That was Mrs. Lyndon Johnson? I thought it was Mrs. Howard Johnson!” ● Entertainer George Jessel once arrived for dinner at the prestigious Stork Club with the talented black actress Lena Horne as his companion. The Club had a “whites only” policy and the restaurant owner pretended that all the tables were fi lled. “Who made the reservations?” he asked as he looked over the reservation book. George Jessel leaned forward and said, “Abraham Lincoln!” The couple was seated. ● Musician Gerald Berners was listening to a high-toned woman of his acquaintance as she complained about a local restaurant. She was upset because the head waiter had refused to seat her and her husband immediately. “Why,” she exclaimed, “We had to tell him who we were!” Gerald inquired politely, “And who were you?” ● Dining with friends at a fancy restaurant, Dorothy Parker rose and excused herself saying, “Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom.” She paused a moment, then added, “I really have to use the telephon e, but I’m too embarrassed to say so.” will visit gallipolis every 1st & 3rd he PerfectweCombination: uesday oF the month From 12 to 2 pm tate of the tArt residentsTechnology oF gallia county served at new liFe lutheran church --1st tues ned with Custom Craftmanship grace united methodist church--3rd tues

WOMEN IN HISTORY: JUANITA MUSSON ● Juanita Musson was an extraordinary woman who ran restaurants in California from 1954 until she retired in 1984. She was a large woman whose girth was underscored by her favorite garb, a muu-muu, which also served to emphasize her colorful personality. ● She was born Juanita Hudspeth in Texas in 1923. She married a soldier named Richard Musson in 1944, following him to his station at the Presidio in San Francisco. Although they were later divorced, she remained in California for the rest of her life, running one restaurant after another, each one more unique than the rest. ● She started out with a place she called Juanita’s Gallery, a rowdy dive that occupied a former bait shop in Sausalito. Later she moved the restaurant into the decrepit remains of a paddlewheel boat. A columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle discovered her quirky restaurant and wrote about it in the paper, which brought comics, entertainers, and other celebrities fl ocking to the joint following their late night performances in San Francisco. “She was something else,” Tommy Smothers said of her. “She was the most intimidating personality,” Smothers said, while also describing her as charming, fi ery and fearless. ● Over the years she ended up running eleven different restaurants. She often lost them due to tax problems or health department violations, and more than one of them burned down. She always found a way to move on. For many years she ran an eatery in and old gas station in the town of El Verano. Patrons coming to dine might run into her pet fawn Sissy, a pig named Erica, a monkey named Beauregard, as well as various ducks, cats, dogs, goats. MOWING • LANDSCAPING • POWERWASHING

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 JUANITA MUSSON cont’d ● Some people claim she was more into rest-RANT-eering than restauranteering, and she was never shy about letting the language fly when things displeased her. If she got your order wrong and you complained about it, she’d scream at the top of her lungs, “Eat it or wear it!” and she was by no means above dumping a plate full of food into someone’s lap if they irritated her. The house rules were printed on the checks: Pour your own coffee. Write your own order. Bus your own table. There were boxes to check whether you wanted slow service, didn’t care about the speed of the service, or were in a great big rush. Those in the know knew better than to check that last box. A sign was prominently posted: “Our food is guaranteed—but not the disposition of the cook.” There was the occasional riot, which was always taken in stride. ● The decor at Juanita’s was unusual to say the least. One reporter described it as “Grand Rapids Grotesque.” Decorations included Chinese gongs, dentist chairs, fake palm trees, baby scales, and stuffed alligators. A headless mannequin in a seductive gown lounged on a waiting room couch, and after-dinner mints were served from a bedpan. She used anything that resembled a dish for serving food, including a turkey served in an oval enamel baby’s bath pan. When the restaurant was full, she’d feed the overflow crowd in the parking lot on makeshift picnic tables fashioned from old doors and sawhorses. ● She was such an unusual local character that two books were written about her. “Juanita: The Madcap Adventures of a Legendary Restaurateur” and “Juanita’s Eat it and Wear It Cookbook.” When she died at the age of 87 following a stroke, all of southern California mourned her passing.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com WORD ORIGINS ● In Greek, gastro means stomach and nomia means law: gastronomic = the law of the stomach. ● In France, grourmet meant a groom for the horses. Later it came to mean any servant. Some servants were wine-tasters; some were connoisseurs of food. Eventually the word came to mean one who is well studied in fi ne foods— a gourmet. ● The Middle Dutch word snacken meant to snap at a thing, such as a dog snaps at a morsel of food tossed its way. Today the English version of the word is snack. ● The French word bancus meant little bench, such as one would sit on during a banquet. FOODS NAMED AFTER PEOPLE ● Prince Charles Phillipe de Condé, grandnephew of Louis XIII, King of France in the 1600s, had a sweet tooth. He wouldn’t eat anything that wasn’t sweet. A chef made up a glaze made of sugar, egg whites, and nuts. Poured over meats and vegetables, Prince Condé fi nally ate stuff that was good for him. The glaze was named after Condé, and the word came to mean anything sweet: candy. ● Samuel Benedict was a famous playboy. After a night of partying in 1894, he went into the kitchens at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and made himself breakfast. It consisted of two poached eggs on top of bacon on top of buttered toast with Hollandaise sauce poured over all. The chef was so impressed that the Waldorf added it to the menu and named it after the inventor: eggs benedict. ● Ancel Keys worked at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He invented a nutritious food that soldiers in the fi eld could eat. It was named after the man who invented it: K-rations.

EATING YOUR WORDS ● In French, hors means outside and oeuvres means the works: literally ‘apart from the main work.’ The Latin word salsus meaning salted gives us our salad. Cole slaw is a salad which comes from the Dutch terms koolsa meaning cabbage, and sla meaning salad. The French word for head, caboch, gave us our cabbage. Spago is the Italian word for little cord: spaghetti. The cantaloupe was fi rst grown in Cantalupo, Italy, and brussels sprouts come from Brussels, Belgium. Gelatin, Jello, and jelly come from the Latin word gelo meaning to congeal. Desservir is French for clear away, and that’s what you do before dessert is served. If you have some tuttifrutti for dessert, you’re eating an Italian word meaning ‘all fruits.’ If you have some chocolate, you’ll be using a Mexican-Indian work for bitter water, chocolatl. And if your family is giving you heat over the number of calories you’re consuming, well, calorie is Latin for heat. FAST FACTS ● Peanuts are known as goobers because the African word for peanut is nguba. ● The old French word moisseron was mispronounced by the English and became mushroom. ● The German word knappen means ‘to eat’ and a knappensack was a sack holding things to eat: a knapsack. ● The Peruvian word charqui meant meat that had been cut in strips and hung out to dry. Today we call it jerky. ● In Old English, grappe meant a cluster of fruit growing together, and grape was the hook that they were gathered with. Today, grape means the fruit itself, and grapple means struggling with a problem much as a harvester struggles with a hook.

Bubbles Add 'Pop' to Labor Day Picnic Blowing bubbles is high on my list of life's simple pleasures. It's relaxing fun that turns any family gettogether into a party. So why not take a big container of this homemade bubble brew to your Labor Day picnic for a bubble-blowing fest and contest all ages will love. Challenge kids to make the biggest, tiniest and longestlasting bubble. Before you leave for the picnic, scout around the house to fi nd unique bubble makers -- from fl y swatters and plastic six-pack rings to strainers and straws. Gather them up and you'll soon be swimming in custom-made bubbles. To make the solution you'll need: 1 large plastic bowl 2 cups warm water 1-cup dishwashing detergent 2 tablespoons glycerin (from the pharmacy) Here's the fun: Pour water in the bowl. Measure out and add the liquid detergent. (Please make sure it's not detergent for dishwashers.) Stir. Add the glycerin and stir a little more. Pull out your junk box, kitchen utensil drawer and cupboards, and say to your kids, "Everyone fi nd a thing or two that isn't sharp, won't get soggy in water and that has lots of holes in it!" For example, spatulas, biscuit cutters, plastic strawberry cartons and plastic caps with small holes on spice jars (you can clip it on a clothespin or chip clip for a wand handle). You also may make your own bubbler by twisting thin wire into a shape, such as a square, heart or circle. Leave enough wire to twist together a handle. Go outside, choose a bubble maker, dip it in the soapy liquid and gently blow through it, or grandly wave it back and forth above your head while the bubbles fl y! Shingles Rash Gone, Pain Lingers On DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two months ago, I broke out in a shingles rash. I had some pain, but not a whole lot. After the rash left, the pain increased, and it's still there to this day. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might make. I need some relief from this pain. I didn't think shingles lasted this long. Would the shingles vaccine help? -- R.M. ANSWER: Shingles doesn't last that long. What you have now is postherpetic neuralgia, nerve damage caused by the shingles virus. That's the source of your pain. The entire story is complicated. When you were a kid, you had chickenpox. Even if you don't remember, even if there's no record of it, the chickenpox virus infected your body. It remains in a deep sleep inside nerve cells until later in life, when something wakens it and the virus makes its way down the nerve to the skin. There it produces the typical rash and pain of shingles. The rash is gone in about two weeks. Between 10 percent and 15 percent of those who have shingles will face one of its dreadful complications: postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the rash is gone. Pain relievers and time are the only things that treat this shingles aftermath. Sometimes antidepressants given in low doses can ease the pain. Amitriptyline is an example of such a drug. Seizurecontrol medicines are another group of drugs that can control postherpetic neuralgia. Lyrica and Neurontin are two such drugs.
Capsaicin cream, available without a prescription, applied to the area of pain, might soothe it. Qutenza is a patch impregnated with a high concentration of capsaicin. It's the latest treatment of the aftermath pain of shingles. A health-care professional has to apply the patch to the skin. It's left in place for an hour and then removed. It is expensive; make sure your insurance covers it. Often, doctors have to resort to a combination of treatments to control postherpetic neuralgia. The shingles vaccine won't help you now. If given before an outbreak, it prevents shingles in 50 percent of recipients and has a 66 percent record of heading off postherpetic neuralgia. Shingles is a torment to many older people. The booklet on shingles explains it and its treatment in detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I suffer from premature auricular contractions. I have seen a couple of doctors about it, but none seems to consider them worth discussing. I was told I didn't need to do anything. I wasn't given any medicines. Does this deserve more attention? -- L.C. ANSWER: Premature auricular contractions are also called premature atrial contractions. The atria are the upper two heart chambers. These are extra beats sandwiched between two normal beats. If they aren't numerous and if they are not causing any symptoms, they can be safely ignored. They are not an indication of serious heart problems, and they don't indicate future troubles.

VA Gives Ground on Agent Orange The Department of Veterans Affairs pays benefi ts for a number of illnesses caused by Agent Orange, including chronic B-cell leukemias, Hodgkin's disease and Parkinson's disease. For the most part, however, unless you were boots on the ground and wallowing in the stuff in Vietnam, proving exposure has been tough. At CFB Gagetown, the VA only acknowledges a fourday window of possible exposure. Blue Water sailors have had to prove that they actually stepped foot on land or were on ships that operated in the waterways of Vietnam. Those who came in contact with the C123K spray planes post-Vietnam were told they were unlikely to be at risk because the Agent Orange would have dried. Offi cials didn't think it through. In the years before the planes were decommissioned (around 2010), they were used as medical and cargo carriers. They were still contaminated. Those affected could include National Guard, fl ight nurses, ground crews and fl ight crews. Methods of transmission would have been skin, breathing or eating. Consider: A wet wipe-down of the plane can activate the toxin. Now, for the fi rst time, the VA has acknowledged (in the form of disability compensation to one veteran) that those who fl ew in the planes that dropped the Agent Orange also could be affected. If you fl ew on or worked on a C-123K between 1972 and 1982, and if you're sick from Agent Orange exposure and fi ghting for compensation, write this down: Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Bailey had his denied claim overturned and he will receive compensation "as the result of occupational hazards onboard C-123K aircrafts." He fl ew on the C-123K after the Vietnam War. Bailey is ill with multiple cancers. When his plane, sent to a museum, was tested in 1994, it was discovered to still be "heavily contaminated" with Agent Orange.

Meeting Our Own Expectations When we were young adults, we no doubt thought that we'd be less happy as we got older, that we were at our peak. Once we reached age 50 and weren't especially pleased because we hadn't met all of our goals, we likely thought it was all downhill from there. A study of people between the ages of 17 and 85 shows that at two particular points in our lives, we are wrong in our guesses about how our lives will progress and how happy we'll be. When we were young, at age 23 (the fi rst point in life where we were wrong), we expected great futures even though the reality wasn't necessarily wonderful at the time. We faced tough circumstances with student loans, home costs, fi nancial pressures and raising young families, but we thought we could handle it and would accomplish much. By the time 50 came along, many of those goals had been sadly abandoned as the realities sank in. Unmet expectations and disappointments colored our lives. We could see the writing on the wall, we thought, in terms of future retirement, declining health and eventual low income. We didn't see anything good down the road. Wrong again. As seniors, it turns out, we're happier than we thought we'd be. How does this work? Expectations. Through our lives, our expectations are different from our actual well-being, and the two don't merge until much later. We're victims of our own age discrimination, not expecting to be happy based on our own predictions. It takes until around age 69 to fi gure out the benefi ts of getting older, and we no longer care about the goals that once consumed us. The key, researchers say, is letting go of regret. I wouldn't want to be 23 again. Would you?
