Back in 1965, Jewel Akens had a Billboard top hit and gold record with “Let Me Tell You about the Birds and the Bees.” This week, Tidbits brings you a variety of facts about these creatures. ● Out of close to 10,000 varieties of birds, the largest is the African ostrich, with an average height of 8 ft. (2.44 m). This flightless bird weighs between 220 and 350 lbs. (100 to 160 kg.). It has the largest eye of any land animal, measuring almost 2 inches (5 cm) across. An ostrich egg measures nearly 7 inches (17.8 cm) across and weighs around 4 lbs. (1.8 kg), enough to make about 11 omelets. ● A cheetah can run at speeds up to 70 mph (113 km/hr), but it’s not the fastest animal on Earth. A spine-tailed swift can fly at speeds of 106 mph (171 km/hr), but one bird is even faster. The peregrine falcon can reach 200 mph (320 km/hr) as it dives down while hunting prey. The fastest bird on land is the ostrich, who can hustle along at 43 mph (69 km/hr). ● The world’s smallest bird is the bee hummingbird, just a bit more than 2 inches (5 cm) in size, and weighing .07 of an ounce (1.8 g), about as much as a lump of sugar. Native to Cuba, this tiny creature can flap its wings between 50 and 80 times per second. turn the page for more!

BIRDS AND THE BEES (continued) ● To safeguard your home from woodpeckers, consider the reasons these creatures peck. The fast drumming by the male is an attempt to attract a mate and announce to other males in the area that this is his territory. He usually chooses a hollow branch for this purpose, but will opt for a house’s gutter or loose siding. They also peck searching for insects. If you see holes in your siding, you could very well have insects living in the boards that the bird found. Your siding is also an attractive place for a nest, and it’s nothing for the woodpecker to drill a hole large enough for entry. It can be beneficial to install a nest box on the side of your house or fence to keep them from pecking into the siding. ● The woodpecker has a very thick skull and a built-in “shock-absorber system” in its neck and rib cage to withstand the constant pounding. ● Filling up your birdbath today? The Audubon Society recommends a depth of about 2 _ inches (6.3 cm). Any less makes it too difficult for the bird, and deeper water frightens them. ● Not every group of birds is called a flock. A group of pelicans is known as a squadron. Other unusual group names include a charm of hummingbirds, a tiding of magpies, a muster of peacocks, a conspiracy of ravens, a bouquet of pheasants, a murmuration of starlings, and a murder of crows. ● It’s a long trip south every year for the North American Black Warbler, a small bird about 6 in. (14 cm) long, weighing only 0.39 oz. (11 g). Every year, it migrates a distance of nearly 2,500 miles (4,023 km) that is covered in a non-stop flight that takes close to 90 hours. They accomplish this by doubling their body mass as migration time nears. The warbler’s average speed on the journey is 27 mph (43 km/hr).

Camping With Pets DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We're planning a multifamily, end-of-summer camping trip and would like to bring our two dogs, Reilly and Quark. Our worry is that there will be several kids of various ages on the trip. Will our dogs be able to coexist with so many strange people? -- Bill and Stacy, Boulder, Colo. DEAR BILL AND STACY: Bringing pets along on a camping trip can be a lot of fun, and the dogs could have a blast, but if it's your first such trip, those are good questions to ask. How well socialized are your dogs? Are they accustomed to interacting with other dogs and with new people? Have they spent much time around children? If you're not sure, it's time to take them to the dog park or on a scheduled play date with other dogs to begin socializing them. You also need to ask questions of your fellow campers.

How do they feel about the dogs coming along? Are any of them, or any of their kids, afraid of dogs? Finally, you need to find out about the campsite. Does it have regulations concerning pets, such as requiring them to be on a leash in certain areas? Does it allow them at all? (Some don't, for various reasons.) If you have doubts about your dogs' ability to handle lots of attention from a group of new humans, it may be best to leave them with a caretaker during this particular camping trip. Plan a camping trip just for yourselves and your dogs in the near future, to get them and you accustomed to the unique experience of camping together. School is only days old and already notes have come home announcing “the first bake sale of the year”. I’ll bet that I’m not the only one that has been hit already by bake sale fever and if you haven’t , don’t think you’re getting off easy. You will. For the working mom, there’s never enough time in the day. Try these easy cookies that will knock their socks off at the next bake sale. EASIEST FUDGY NUTELLA COOKIES YIELD 12 INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp All Purpose Flour 1 large egg 1 cup Nutella 1/2 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Combine flour, egg, and Nutella in a large bowl and mix together with a spoon until dough comes together and no flour lumps remain. Stir in chocolate chips until evenly mixed into the dough. 2. Make dough balls, about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. Place on cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart. Press down slightly on dough so the dough balls are more like very, very thick round disks rather than perfectly round balls. Smooth edges that may have cracked from the pressure of pushing down on the balls so that you have thick, round smooth disks. 3. Bake for about 10 minutes. Cookies should be mostly set, but might be slightly still soft in the middle. Let cookies cool on rack until completely set. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t.

BIRDS AND THE BEES (continued) ● West Baden Springs, Indiana was the birthplace of a very famous Bird who migrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1979. The 6’ 9” tall (2.1 m) Bird, also called a Larry Bird, played his entire basketball career with the Boston Celtics, leading them to three NBA championships. He was also a 12-time NBA All-Star and league MVP three times. After participating on the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team,” the Bird retired as a player and entered into coaching. ● There are about 20,000 different species of bees in the world. Bumblebees pollinate crops and plants, while honeybees produce honey from the pollen and nectar of the plants they pollinate. A honeybee’s wings flap at the rate of 11,000 times per minute, producing that familiar buzzing sound. ● Three types of bees occupy each colony – the queen, the worker bee, and the drone. All drones are male and their only job is to mate with the queen. Female bees are the only ones that work, collecting pollen and nectar and cleaning the hive. The queen’s only job is to lay eggs, and she can lay about 3,000 eggs in one day. Only the queen bee can reproduce and all worker bees are sterile. ● One tablespoon of honey requires the nectar of about 2,000 flowers. One pound of honey is produced by 550 bees collecting nectar from 2.5 million flowers. A typical honeybee can carry the pollen from 500 flowers in one trip. ● If you think poisonous snakes are deadly, consider the fact that bees kill more people annually than snakes. Of all deaths caused by animals, bee stings rank highest, causing 75% of those deaths compared to about 5% for snakes.

● You might be surprised to learn that there is a world record for the tallest recorded hairdo. Even more surprising is the fact that the record-holder's beehive measured a whopping 6 feet, 6 inches tall. ● Food trucks are rapidly gaining popularity all over the country, both at fairs and at stand-alone food-truck bazaars. You might be surprised to learn that the origin of the food truck goes all the way back to 1872. At that time, in Providence, R.I., all the restaurants closed at 8 every night, leaving factory workers who got off late without a place to eat. At the time, a man named Walter Scott (obviously not Sir Walter Scott) was working as a pushcart peddler, selling odds and ends out of a glorified wheelbarrow. Like a true American entrepreneur, Scott saw a need and moved to fill it. He put a small stove in a horse-drawn wagon and began roaming the streets late at night, selling sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs and coffee. His success spurred imitators, and soon the city was teeming with the "after-hours lunchwagons." Only the female bee stings, and uses 21 muscles to accomplish this task. Contrary to popular belief, not every bee dies when it stings. Honeybees, whose stingers have barbs or hooks, die after stinging because as the bee tries to fly away, part of the abdomen gets caught and is ripped away. Bumblebees have smooth stingers that do not get caught in the victim’s skin, enabling them to fly away and sting again. ● Back in 1985, a Virginia man named Jed Shaner set a world record by piling 42 lbs. (19 kg.) of bees on his body. But that wasn’t enough for this third-generation beekeeper. Two months later, he upped the amount to 48 lbs. (21.8 kg.), then followed up six years later with an astounding 80 lbs. (36.3 kg.) – about 640,000 bees – several inches thick covering his body. He missed his goal of 100 lbs. (45.4 kg.), and although he endured several stings, said, “It’s not as bad as you think.” That’s what he thinks!

CLARA BARTON (continued) ● After completion of her further education, Clara opened another school, which rapidly grew to 600 attendees under her leadership. When the school board chose a man over her to head the school, her career took another route. Clara accepted a job in Washington, D.C. as a clerk in the U.S. Patent Office, the first woman to receive a significant clerkship with the federal government. ● It was during her time in Washington that the Civil War broke out. Troops poured into the capital city, and Clara began offering assistance to hungry and wounded servicemen. She campaigned for donations for bedding, clothing, and medical supplies. Having always had an instinctual feel for nursing, having cared for her seriously-ill brother for two years when she was just 11, she began caring for the wounded, traveling to the battlefields. ● As the battles raged, she drove wagons to the sites loaded with supplies, earning her the name “Angel of the Battlefield.” She was a nurse, a cook, and source of comfort, reading to soldiers, writing letters for them, and offering a sympathetic ear. ● As the war drew to a close, Clara began working diligently to identify 13,000 of the prisoners who had died in the legendary Andersonville Confederate prison camp and marking their graves. Following her efforts, thousands of letters began pouring in asking for her help in locating missing loved ones. Over the next four years, Clara operated the Office of Correspondence with Friends of the Missing Men of the U.S. Army, answering over 63,000 letters, and identifying more than 22,000 men. The Red Cross’ tracing service had its roots in Clara’s activity, helping million locate missing loved ones over the decades.

She led the group for the next 23 years, expanding the function to disaster relief, assisting victims of a destructive Michigan forest fire as the first official project. She and 50 volunteers were the first relief workers at the site of the devastating 1889 Johnstown, Pennsylvania flood, which claimed over 2,000 lives. Her final project was providing relief to survivors of a hurricane and tidal wave that struck Galveston, Texas in 1900, causing more than 6,000 deaths. Clara was 79 years old. She retired from the Red Cross in 1904, and passed away eight years later. Born on Christmas Day, 1821, she died on Good Friday, 1912.

About 10% of flowering plants in the United States are considered endangered, including the state flower of Minnesota, the pink and white lady slipper. This rare wildflower can take up to 16 years to produce its first flower, and it’s illegal to pick them. ● The world’s largest flower, the titan arums, has blossoms 10 feet high (3.0 m) and 3 feet (0.9 m) across that weigh nearly 36 lbs. (16.3 kg). What a shame its nickname is the “stinking corpse lily,” because its flowers smell of rotten meat and decaying flesh! This is to attract flies, which are the flower’s pollinators.

Its thick leaves are covered with small hairs that snap together less than one second after an insect lands on the hairs. Likewise, the beautiful foxglove produces a toxin that can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and even death. Yet it is also used for medicinal purposes in the drug Digitalis for the treatment of certain heart diseases. ● If you want something done, do it yourself! According to a survey conducted among florists, 15% of American women send flowers to themselves for Valentine’s Day. It’s no surprise that Valentine’s Day is the number one holiday for florists, representing one-third of all fresh flower purchases and 40% of dollar volume for the entire year. ● The Redwood National Park is home to some real giants, including the world’s largest living tree, nicknamed Hyperion, which stands 378.1 feet (115 m) tall. Just a bit shorter is Helios at 376.3 feet (114.7 m), and third tallest, Icarus, at 371.2 feet (113 m). The General Sherman, another giant redwood sequoia, reaches a height of 275 feet (84 m), but its girth is the amazing figure. It measures 25 ft. (8 m) and has an estimated weight of 4 million lbs. (1,814,369 kg.) ● A Bristlecone pine tree named Methuselah located in California’s White Mountains is thought to be the world’s oldest tree, estimated to be 4,650 years old. ● A tree’s age can be accurately determined to the exact calendar year by its number of growth rings. The size of the ring can be affected by environmental events, such as temperature, water availability, nutrition in the soil, and even volcanic eruptions. ● Did you know that you can increase your property value just by planting trees? Realtors tell us that houses surrounded by trees typically sell for 18-25% higher than those houses with no trees. Shade trees can make a building up to 20 degrees cooler in the summer, and heating and air conditioning costs can be reduced by 30% by having trees around a building. Trees are also beneficial by acting as sound barriers to cut down on noise pollution. ● Studies indicate that hospital patients whose window faces trees heal faster, use fewer painkillers, and leave the hospital sooner than those whose window faces a brick wall. Crumb-Topped Tomatoes You can't get the crumbs crusty on the grill, so brown them ahead of time in a skillet. When ready to cook the tomatoes, place them on the grill alongside your meat for a quick heat-through. 2 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 cup (about 2 slices firm white bread) fresh bread crumbs 1 clove garlic, crushed with garlic press 2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 8 plum tomatoes
1. In 10-inch skillet, melt margarine or butter over low heat. Add bread crumbs and cook, stirring, until lightly browned. Stir in garlic; cook 30 seconds. Remove skillet from heat; stir in parsley, salt and pepper. 2. Cut each tomato horizontally in half. Top each tomato half with some crumb mixture. Place tomatoes on grill over medium heat and cook until hot but not mushy, 8 to 10 minutes. Nobody Loves a Wart DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 13-year-old son has a wart on his hand. In fact, he has two of them. They don't bother him, but they bother me. If you neglect them, will they go away on their own? I'm not sure we can handle a doctor's bill right now. How else can we get rid of them on the cheap? I'd like to find and grab by the neck whoever gave him these warts. -R.R. ANSWER: Don't bother looking for the person who passed the wart virus to your son. You'll never find him or her. For one, some infected people show no signs of a wart, yet they can pass the virus to others. For two, the incubation period for a wart is two to six months. Do you think your son remembers who touched him six months ago? The human papillomavirus is the cause of warts. More than 150 different varieties exist. Some warts are dangers to health. The ones that cause cervical cancer are examples, but that's a topic for another day. The ordinary wart is passed by skin-to-skin contact. Your son ought to make an effort not to touch the wart to other parts of his body. He can transfer the virus in that way. It's OK to leave the warts alone. They disappear two out of three times, but their disappearance can take as long as two years. For home wart treatment, you'll find many wart removers on the counters of your local drugstores. DuoPlant, Compound W and Wart-Off are but a few names. Follow
bottle directions carefully. Duct tape -- the duct tape found in hardware stores -has a mixed record as a wart remover. Apply tape to the warts and leave it in place for six days. You don't need a huge amount of tape, just enough to cover the wart. On day six, remove the tape and have your son soak his hand in warm water. Then, with an emery board or pumice stone -- both drugstore items -- lightly rub the warts to remove as much of them as you can. Reserve these devices for wart treatment only. On day seven, reapply the duct tape. Continue the ritual, if need be, for eight weeks. If it hasn't worked by then, it's not going to. "Upside down and right side up" sounds like an impossible combination unless you've just read a chapter from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," where things aren't always what they seem. Or, imagine mismatched household objects upside down and right side up, and anyone's junk drawer comes to mind. Yet with this DIY craft, the upside-down-ness isn't part of a jumbled mess. And its quirkiness engages kids' imaginations, big time. That's why they like it. By turning a cup or mug on its head and attaching an unsuspecting plate or bowl on top with dabs of glue, two ordinary objects are transformed into humorous, eyecatching pedestals. The conversation piece is perfect for serving food or for displaying collections in your child's room. Here's how: 1. Collect interesting objects for useful and comical pedestals. Start in your own cupboards, and pull out sports cups, a chipped serving dish or a coffee mug. For fun, suggest that your kids stand on their heads to see how an object will eventually look! If that's not enough, hit secondhand stores and neighborhood garage sales. Challenge your kids to find unusual combinations that capture their imaginations. 2. Wash and dry collected items. An adult should glue glass and plastic objects together at the midpoint with a strong adhesive, such as Gorilla Glue brand. Let dry completely. Here are some ideas to get you started: --A margarita-style glass and a colorful bowl. Fill the bowl with salsa and set next to a basket of chips. --A drinking glass and a vintage flowerpot. Fill the flowerpot with fresh mint sprigs for adding to a pitcher of lemonade. --A mug and a narrow tray. Line up crackers, cheese and fresh fruit for an elevated afternoon snack. --A teacup and a relish tray. Arrange pickles, olives and radishes for crudites at dinnertime. --A goblet and a china plate. Set a cupcake inside, or stack brownies and cookies for dessert. --A plastic sports cup and a dish. Store coins or display shells, rocks or a stack of baseball cards.

A: Your flatware was crafted by Georg Jensen, who opened his first silver shop in Copenhagen, Denmark, in about 1904. A later company opened in the United States in 1941 and ceased operations about a decade later. Your particular pattern was introduced in 1915. Typical prices per piece include a table fork, $180; a fruit spoon, $130; a teaspoon, $80; and a luncheon knife, $140. Q: I recently purchased a 2-gallon crock marked "Union Stoneware Co." and "Minnesota Stoneware Co." Deceptive Loans Investigated If you've heard of Sallie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, you've likely had a loan through one of them, perhaps a mortgage or student loan. Did you have any problems? The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has plans to accuse Sallie Mae of discriminatory lending and violating deceptive practices laws in the area of student loans to veterans and active military. Not only that, but part of the complaints concern Sallie Mae violating the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Even better, the Department of Justice is doing a probe. Among the problems detailed in congressional testimony by a member of the Office of Servicemember Affairs: Debt collectors weren't monitored, complaints weren't tracked, interest rates weren't lowered to the required 6 percent when a member of the family went on active duty, servicemembers were told they must get a letter from their commanding officer when they go on active duty, officers who wrote those letters were told to provide an "end date" to the active duty service, and lenders automatically canceled the 6 percent interest at the end of one year. Sallie Mae had to fess up in its recent quarterly earnings report that the FDIC was about to take formal action. Sallie Mae must have known the August reprimand was coming, because on June 27, it reported the launch of online resources for active duty and veterans families with student loans. The site, SallieMae. com/military, has information on special repayment options, options to defer, forms and FAQs. The last days of summer are upon us. Maybe you'll choose one last visit to the beach or maybe a trip to a state park or maybe even your own backyard. Wherever you choose to "party," be sure to take this easy pasta dish along. It's sure to please. 1/2 cup fat-free French dressing 2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise 3 cups cold cooked rotini pasta, rinsed and drained 1 cup finely chopped celery 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley 1. In a large bowl, combine French dressing and mayonnaise. Add pasta, celery, onion and parsley. Mix well to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Gently stir again just before serving. Chasing Away Deer Q: I'm having trouble with deer sneaking into my yard overnight and chewing up the lower branches of my trees and eating other plants in my garden. How can I get rid of them, other than sitting up all night so I can scare them off? -- Renee in Columbus, Ga. A: Here are a few ways to discourage deer from making your yard their salad bar: --Move gardens away from shady or wooded areas. Deer tend to stay out of sight using shaded, tree-laden areas for cover. They'll lurk near vegetable gardens that are close to such areas. --Reduce or move plants that deer love to eat, like leafy shrubs and tender green plants. Try mixing in plants they don't like, such as snapdragons, begonia or holly with your vegetables or flowers to make the area less palatable.
--Consider fencing. If all else fails, barrier fencing can keep most deer off of your property. The drawbacks are the cost of installing and maintaining the fence, and no longer having an unrestricted view beyond your property. Deer can leap as high as 9 feet, meaning fencing needs to be at least as high. --Try a homemade solution. Many homeowners hang bars of soap from tree branches or fenceposts around the property, betting that the perfume or the soap itself will repel deer. --Use a commercial repellent. Deer repellent sprays are available that can be applied to the edges of your property throughout the gardening season. Medicare Heads-Up Medicare's annual open enrollment period begins in a month: Circle Oct. 15 on your calendar. This is one year you'll want to start your research early.
