Z-Z-Z’s
by Kathy Wolfe It’s something that you do every single day of your existence, but how much do you really know about sleep? Tidbits has some lesser-known facts about one of life’s necessities – shut-eye! ● When you’re asleep, your body may be resting but your brain certainly isn’t! It remains hard at work constantly giving orders to the body’s various systems to keep it breathing, pumping blood, and digesting. Short-term memories are recorded in the brain during sleep. Did you know that sleeping shortly after learning something new will actually improve your ability to remember it? ● Rapid eye movement, or REM sleep, is characterized by rapid and random movement of the eyes and accounts for about 25% of a total night’s sleep, 90 to 120 minutes. Prior to that are stages of light sleep, when our eye movements stop and brain waves are extremely slow. The first period of REM occurs about 90 minutes after a person falls asleep and lasts about 10 minutes. A sleeper will experience about four or five periods of REM, with each lengthening toward morning. Brain activity is heightened and this is the time of intense dreaming.

Z-Z-Z’S (continued) ● Sleep deprivation has numerous negative effects on the body’s functions and well-being. A recent Harvard study has tied insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept less than six hours a night. A shortage of sleep can put the body into a state of “high alert,” which can drive up blood pressure, putting a person at risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one extra hour a night can decrease your heart attack risk by 33%. And consider what that extra sleep will do for your family, social, and work relationships when you are less irritable, impatient, anxious, and depressed! ● Lack of sufficient sleep can even lead to obesity! The hormones leptin and ghrelin are instrumental in controlling feelings of hunger and fullness. Inadequate sleep can increase production of ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite, raising the sensation of hunger by as much as 25%. Leptin signals the brain when the body is full, but not enough shut-eye drives leptin levels down. Combine these two and it’s a recipe for obesity. ● Even an increase in wrinkles can occur when you don’t get enough rest. Your body releases extra cortisol, the “stress hormone” when you don’t get enough rest. Cortisol breaks down the skin’s collagen, that substance that maintains skin’s elasticity. ● It’s a little alarming to know that 23% of commercial airline pilots admit that sleep deprivation affects their performance at least once a week. One-fifth of those surveyed disclosed that they have made serious mistakes as a result. Fourteen percent of truck drivers confess a “near miss” due to lack of sleep, while 44% of them say they never or rarely get enough sleep on work nights. ● Staying awake for just 17 hours leads to decreased performance equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. No sleep for 21 hours is comparable to 0.08% blood alcohol content. MOWING • LANDSCAPING • POWERWASHING

Leash Laws Are Sometimes Vague DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm writing in reference to your recent column about training a Òcool city pooch.Ó You're forgetting that many cities have laws about tying up your dog to lampposts. Unless that Òcool pooch'sÓ owner wants to pay a fine, he'd better forget about doing that. -- S.Y., via e-mail DEAR S.Y.: That's a good point: Pet owners should check city ordinances ahead of time before taking their pets out on a stroll. Are pets completely not allowed inside businesses by city law, rather than at the business owner's discretion? Can you tie their leash to a lamppost, bike stand or outdoor table? Can a dog be unaccompanied or off leash at any time? As a counterpoint, many cities' leash laws are sometimes a bit vague on this point. Almost all require that owners keep their dogs under control at all times, and on a leash everywhere except in designated off-leash areas. Municipal
buildings and schools are usually off-limits to non-service dogs, period. Some cities, and an increasing number of businesses, are making more allowances for dogs. For example, some grocery stores and a few department stores in my area, like Home Depot, allow small dogs inside as long as they stay on a leash beside their owner and are well-behaved. However, it is up to the pet owner to learn what the rules are in the businesses he or she wants to frequent. The most important point, beyond what's written in leash laws or by businesses, is that pet owners be good citizens, and make sure their dog is safe and under their control when out and about. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Did you know mosquitos can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don't? Find out more in my new book, ÒFighting Fleas,Ó available now.

Welcome to Goose Tips! With school underway, we find ourselves in a panic trying to prepare everything our kids will need to be a standout success. A healthy lunch will keep your kids going throughout the day and including a few fun twists on the regular lunch box will ensure no trades in the cafeteria. Thinking outside the lunch-box will give your kids something to look forward to and provide them the much needed nutrients and vitamins for staying sharp in the classroom. About food safety: lightweight, freezable, cold packs or frozen juice boxes enable you to send the kids to school with perishables such as pasta salad, egg salad, meat sandwiches, yogurt, tuna, and more. Whole wheat tortillas, pita bread or crackers will give your standard lunch an extra boost. Also, sending cut fruits with a fun dip will give them a nutritious dessert. You’ve heard this before, but a little note from you tucked into a lunch once in a while is a comfort. Keep notes small enough so kids don’t have to haul out a long, loving letter from home in front of the rest of the lunchroom. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! Hungry for more? Find this, and other great tips on our Facebook page. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our
food doesn’t.

Z-Z-Z’S (continued) ● How do you know if you’re sleep deprived? A sure sign is if it takes you less than five minutes to fall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. You might also notice blurred vision, hand tremors, or a change in appetite. ● We each have an internal “master clock” in our brains that coordinates the rhythm of our body’s functions. Known as the “circadian clock,” it is affected by external environmental factors, with light as the main factor influencing our 24hour circadian cycle. These rhythms influence our sleep cycles, hormone release, and body temperature, and function best with a normal light-dark cycle. This master clock controls the productions of the hormone melatonin, the one that makes us sleepy. When there is less light, the clock tells the brain to produce more melatonin, resulting in drowsiness. When a person’s work hours are scheduled during the normal sleep period, it’s difficult to stay awake, but it can also be a health risk. It’s believed that melatonin protects the body against cancer. For those who are exposed to light at night, melatonin levels are reduced, and researchers believe those people are more prone to colon and breast cancer. ● Studies indicate that the risk of cardiovascular disease declines significantly when a person regularly sleeps seven hours a night. ● It’s estimated that sleeplessness contributes to one in six fatal highway accidents. It seems that men are more likely than women to drive while drowsy and twice as likely as women to fall asleep while driving. Also related to gender, women need about an hour more sleep per night, yet are twice as likely to have insomnia. Unfortunately, the loss of that hour, coupled with stress level, biological stages, and responsibilities makes them more prone to depression.

● On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Society of Jesus -a Roman Catholic missionary organization -- receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The first Jesuits took vows of poverty and chastity, and made plans for the conversion of millions to Catholicism. ● On Sept. 23, 1875, Billy the Kid, born William Henry McCarty, is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He broke out of jail and roamed the American West, eventually earning a reputation as an outlaw and murderer, with a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders. ● On Sept. 29, 1907, Gene Autry, perhaps the greatest "singing cowboy" of all time, is born in Tioga, Texas. While Autry was no cowboy, he was a genuine Westerner who had lived on a ranch. His lasting fame came from films and his first movie, "In Old Santa Fe," eventually was followed by nearly 100 other films. ● On Sept. 28, 1918, a Liberty Loan parade in Philadelphia prompts a huge outbreak of the flu epidemic in the city. By the time the epidemic ended, an estimated 30 million people were dead worldwide. The most likely origin of the 1918 flu pandemic was a bird or farm animal in the American Midwest. ● On Sept. 26, 1928, work begins at Chicago's new Galvin Manufacturing Corp. In 1930, Galvin would introduce the Motorola radio, the first mass-produced commercial car radio. (The name had two parts: "motor" evoked cars and motion, while "ola" derived from "Victrola" record players.) ● On Sept. 25, 1965, the Kansas City Athletics ageless wonder Satchel Paige started a game against the Boston Red Sox. The 59-year-old Paige, a Negro League legend, proved his greatness by giving up only one hit in his three innings of play. He was the oldest pitcher ever to play a game in the major leagues.

● It was noted wit Ambrose Bierce who made the following sage observation: "All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher." ● When the famous "Hollywood" sign was constructed in 1923, it read "Hollywoodland." It was an advertisement for a new housing development and was expected to be in place only about a year and a half. The sign became such a recognizable symbol of the new film industry in Los Angeles that it has been refurbished and rebuilt as necessary for 90 years. ● In January of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of maggots as a medical device for cleaning wounds. ● If you're planning a trip to Laramie, Wyo., you might want to make a pilgrimage to the Ames Pyramid. At the end of a 2-mile dirt road, in the middle of featureless pastureland, you'll find this 60-foot-tall monument seemingly plunked down at random. The pyramid was built in 1882 near a line of the Union Pacific railroad and in honor of the railroad's financiers. It was thought that the monument would be a welcome distraction to railroad passengers traveling through the plains of Wyoming. The decline of railroad travel, however, caused many tracks to be removed, including the line that ran by the pyramid. Now only cows are left to admire this relic of the industrial age. ● The 1979 horror movie "Alien" has become a cult classic, but not many people realize that it was originally titled "Star Beast." Thought for the Day: "Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. I know, because I turned down the first offer often enough and held out for the 50 cents." -Marilyn Monroe

A scientific study has determined that a 60 to 90 minute nap can be as beneficial as a full night’s sleep for learning a new skill. A “power nap” can improve alertness, creativity, productivity, motor skills, and accuracy, as well as reduce stress and risk of heart attack, and aid in weight loss. ● What about those folks who never seem to need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning? These individuals are awakened by the release of a stress hormone called adrencorticotrophin as they unconsciously anticipate the stress of waking up. ● If you’re one of those who kicks and punches while asleep, you are more susceptible to neurological disease. Experts say that “violent sleepers” have a 50% chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease or dementia and should consult a neurologist to diagnose the problem. ● If you think that drinking coffee will help you stay awake, consider that those folks who drink four or more caffeinated beverages on a daily basis have a higher risk for sleep apnea.

JACKIE KENNEDY (continued) ● Jackie’s choice of college was Vassar with studies in history, literature, art, and French, spending her junior year studying in Paris. Following a transfer to George Washington University and subsequent graduation, she took a job at the Washington Times-Herald photographing and interviewing local citizens. One of her final assignments with the paper was covering the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. ● Jackie met Massachusetts senator-elect John F. Kennedy at a 1952 dinner party after he “leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a date.” They were married the following year. ● Although she always wished to write a novel, instead she encouraged her husband to write Profiles in Courage, which she helped him edit, a book that won the Pulitzer Prize. ● Jackie suffered a miscarriage in 1955, and delivered a stillborn daughter, Arabella in 1956. Daughter Caroline was born the following year. In 1960, John Kennedy was elected the 35th president of the United States, and three weeks later their son John, Jr. was born. ● Shortly after the inauguration, Jackie began her famous project of redecorating the White House and historically restoring the public rooms, hunting down furnishings that had been removed from the White House. She was awarded an Emmy for her TV special highlighting the tour of the White House following the restoration. Jackie hosted many fine cultural events at the Executive Mansion – performances of opera, ballet, Shakespeare, and jazz. She had an elegant sense of style, and her fashions set trends around the world. ● Jackie was 34 years old in 1963 when her husband was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. She had experienced the death of her three-day-old son just three months before. After spending several months in Washington following his death, she moved to New York City to establish the John F. Kennedy Library.

Seven years later, she was a widow once again. ● As a widow in her mid-40s, Jackie returned to the literary world, taking a job as an editor with Viking Press, later moving over to Doubleday Books. At age 64, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She gave up her three-pack-a-day smoking habit and cut back on her work schedule at Doubleday, but the cancer continued spread. Just four months after her diagnosis, she passed away. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery next to JFK, their son Patrick and daughter Arabella.
VEGETARIANS It’s estimated that about 3.2% of the U.S. population are vegetarians. There are many reasons that folks choose to abstain from meat – let’s examine some of the information about those who like to veg out! ● While some people opt for vegetarianism out of respect for animals’ rights, others have health-related or religious reasons. Motivation might also be cultural, environmental, or economic. The practice has its roots in ancient India, where they based the tradition on nonviolence toward animals. There are more vegetarians in India than in any other country, claiming 70% of the world’s vegetarians. The ancient Hellenes and Egyptians cited medical purposes and purification rituals for the practice. A Buddhist vegetarian abstains from not only animal products but all vegetables in the Allium family, including onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots. They find the odor of these offensive and believe the “anger up the blood.”

VEGETARIANS (continued) ● The 6th-century Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras was one of the first famous vegetarians, and those of his era were actually called Pythagoreans. He believed that nonviolence toward animals was the first step toward the same among humans. In his words, “For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.” ● The word “vegetarian” was coined in the 19th century, and England was home to the world’s first Vegetarian Society, formed in 1847 to demonstrate that it was possible to live a healthy life without eating meat. ● Some cultures are primarily vegetarian due to poverty. A large percentage of those populations are poor farmers who cannot afford meat and subsist on beans, peppers, legumes, and grains. ● Founding father Benjamin Franklin followed a vegetarian diet for much of his life. Franklin believed that the diet was not only healthier, the money he saved on expensive meat could be spent on books. He is credited with introducing tofu to America around 1770. ● Vegetarians can’t all be lumped together in one group, since their preferences differ so widely. A strict vegan diet is completely plantbased and excludes animal products of any kind, including eggs and dairy, and even beeswax and honey. An ovo-vegetarian eats eggs, but not dairy products. A lacto-vegetarian includes dairy products in their diet, but not eggs. An ovo-lacto vegetarian eats both eggs and dairy. If you’re a pescetarian, you are a vegetarian who eats all plant-based foods, dairy, eggs, and fish. ● There seem to be many health benefits associated with vegetarianism. The American Dietetic Association reports that vegetarians have a lower Body Mass Index, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, less Type 2 diabetes, lower rates of hypertension, and less incidences of prostrate and colon cancer. Studies indicate that a low-fat, high-fiber plant-based diet also decreases the risk of developing gallstones. Some research shows that a vegetarian diet increases the body’s metabolism, enabling the body to burn calories at a faster rate than a meatbased diet. ● More people can be fed on a vegetarian diet than a meat-based one. One acre of land can yield about 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg) of potatoes whereas only about 165 lbs. (75 kg) of beef can be produced on that same acre. Only 20% of America’s corn is eaten by humans, with the remainder consumed by livestock. Livestock eat 95% of the oats grown in the U.S.

Q: I have a clock that is designed to look like a fireplace. When it's plugged in, an element looks like a real burning fire. This is an old clock, and I wonder where I can sell it. -- Bernie, Albuquerque, N.M. A: Although I am not certain what company made your clock, I found two listed on eBay, one for $35, one for $45. Ones that I have spotted in shops generally are priced for less than $50. This is for clocks in fairly good shape and in working condition. To find a buyer for your clock, I suggest you show it to antiques and clock dealers in your area. Q: I have a collection of 54 Lenox carousel horses, and an additional 16 by Thomas Kinkade. Where can I sell them? -- Tom, Tiro, Ohio A: I suggest you post them on eBay. This will showcase them to buyers throughout the country. Incidentally, Walter Scott Lenox and Jonathan Coxon founded a ceramic company in Trenton, N.J., in 1889. When Coxon left The Ceramic Art Company in 1906, the name was changed to Lenox. In 1917, its line was chosen to be the official china of the White House. Its superior dinnerware made the name Lenox famous throughout the country.

Q: I have a Denver ceramic bowl that was made in about 1915. What can you tell me about this company? -- Jacob, Omaha, Neb. A: Frederick J. White and his son, Francis, started a small pottery company in Denver in about 1893. They used local clay to produce earthenware, and within a few short years had expanded their operations to include more artistic pieces, some marked "Denver Art Pottery," while others were simply "Denver." Production of this company is extremely collectible. For example, a bowl with a tree design recently sold at auction for $650. Q: I have a Vargas calendar from 1949 that is complete and in fairly good condition. I have been offered $150 for it, but wanted to check with you first. -- Steve, Grand Junction, Colo. A: Take the money and run. According to the sources I checked, your 1949 Vargas calendar is worth about $75.

Storing a Window Air Conditioner Q: This is our first year renting an apartment. I'm from the South, where air conditioning is used almost year-round. But my mother recommended that we put away our window air conditioner for the winter to save on bills. Do you have any tips for doing this? -- Janice in Mystic, Conn. A: Storing the air conditioner is one of the less-celebrated fall rituals in the Northeast. Sometime in between leaf-peeping, apple-picking, autumn fairs and trick-or-treating, people must face up to the fact that they need to come home and drag the A/C unit out of the window. Here's how to make it less painful. --Recruit a friend or three. Even a small 5,000 BTU unit should be tandem lifted. And if you're hoisting a larger unit, you'll need two lifters and a puller to make sure the unit is safely lifted into the apartment. (I'll spare you the heart-stopping tale of the time I tried to do this by myself and was discovered by my boyfriend struggling to stop the unit from flipping out of the window to the car roof three stories below.) --Prepare a storage box ahead of time. If you don't have the original unit's box, get a sturdy box that will fit the dimensions of the unit, with a little room to store its expander panels. --Turn off the unit a few days ahead of time. This allows for the condensed water in the unit to evaporate. --At the same time, remove and clean the air filter. Use a vacuum to get rid of dirt and debris. Soak a really dirty filter in warm water and dish soap, rinse and dry completely, and put back into the unit. --Clear a space to set down the unit after you've lifted it inside, and line the space with old towels. Place the air conditioner upright on the towels in case water from condensation is still in the unit. --Remove the expander panels and brackets from both sides of the unit. Put the screws into a small plastic bag and tape to the side of the air conditioner. --Wipe down the exterior of the unit with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. --With your friends, tandem lift the unit into the prepared storage box. Place the panels and brackets into the box and pad the sides with dry towels or bubble wrap. --Tandem lift the unit to a storage area that's protected from the weather. --Buy your friends dinner, and be available to help lift their air conditioner out. HOME TIP: Clean a window unit's air filter every two weeks during the cooling season to keep the air conditioner working efficiently.

Replacing Heart Valve Without Surgery DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 88-year-old father has congestive heart failure and aortic stenosis. His cardiologist suggested transcatheter aortic valve replacement as an alternative to open-heart surgery. I've read overwhelmingly positive reports about this minimally invasive technique. I feel very strongly that doing this not only would prolong my father's life but also would greatly improve its quality. I would appreciate any help you could give me to alleviate my father's apprehensions. He is very leery about having any surgical procedure. -- J.W. ANSWER: At 88, your dad probably has health considerations other than his narrowed aortic valve and congestive heart failure. Even if he does, the procedure of replacing his aortic valve without the standard surgical operation places little stress on him and gives him the chance to lead a more active and longer life. A narrowed aortic valve, aortic stenosis, makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood out into the body. The surgical procedure for replacing that valve involves cutting the breastbone (sternum) so the surgeon can view the heart directly. The transcatheter intervention is done without any incision. A pliable tube, the catheter, is advanced from a surface artery and threaded into the heart. The valve replacement is attached to the catheter. When the surgeon has arrived at the site for installation, it's accomplished directly with the catheter. This procedure is a godsend for elderly people who might not
be able to withstand the rigors of the standard operation. When people with aortic stenosis develop symptoms, their life span is greatly reduced. If congestive heart failure results from this valve problem, a patient, on average, has only one and a half to two years of life left. And those years are not pleasant. The affected person becomes extremely short of breath even on slight exertion. Valve replacement eliminates the death threat and the breathlessness. Your dad should reconsider his position. This procedure isn't surgery. The booklet on congestive heart failure explains this common condition and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 71 years old and have been told I have DISH, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. I am told there is no cure. Will you give me your opinion and advice? -- R.B. ANSWER: DISH is something that happens in middle and older ages. It's calcification and bone formation in the ligaments of the back. Bone spurs are part of the picture. Any part of the spine can be affected, from neck to lower back. For many, it causes no symptoms but accidentally is discovered on an X-ray. For others, it's a source of pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis, the most common kind of arthritis, has no cure either. Many therapies exist to dull its pain and preserve joint motion. The same goes for DISH. Heat, stretching exercises, Tylenol and the many nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) can make life livable for those with DISH.
If your house and car are full of broken and worn-down crayons after a summer of coloring and doing art projects, don't throw them out! Instead, collect them all in a box or basket and try this easy recycling activity. You and your kids can make new "designer" crayons -- perfect for fall art projects or for party favors at your child's next birthday party. Here's how: First remove the paper wrapper from each crayon. Then, help the kids break the crayons into pieces and put them into piles according to basic colors. Put the pieces according to color, in small, heat-resistant glass jars, such as empty baby-food jars. With an adult's help, fit a small rack inside a saucepan, and place the jars on the rack. Fill the saucepan with enough water to cover 1/2 inch of the jars. Heat the water until the crayons melt. Keep an eye on them at all times. An adult should carefully pour the melted wax into a plastic candy mold tray (available at kitchen-supply stores and craft stores in a variety of fun shapes children like, such as stars, flowers, animals, skates, etc.). Or use icecube trays that come in fun shapes. The wax will harden quickly and pop out of the mold easily. You could put the tray in the freezer for a few minutes to speed up the process. For added effect, pour a contrasting color into the mold after the first layer of wax has hardened. This will produce a two-tone crayon. Try out your new crayon shapes on a piece of paper. And for more fun, you can use them as a puzzle. Just let 4- and 5-year olds put the different shapes back into the candy molds. Extra idea: Keep a crayon handy on the refrigerator for quick note-taking. Simply add a piece of magnet from a magnet strip and set it on the final layer of wax before it completely hardens. VA Gobbledygook The title of the report by the Office of the Inspector General sounded interesting: Audit of Non-Purchase Card Micro-Purchases. The first thing I learned was that "micro" doesn't necessarily mean small. A micro-purchase in the Department of Veterans Affairs is one that is less than $3,000. Last year, the Veterans Health Administration spent $3 billion on micro-purchases. Non-purchase cards were used, and those cards earn rebates. The audit was to learn if the Veterans Health Administration could increase efficiency and cost effectiveness with the non-purchase cards. What the OIG concluded was that medical facilities could have saved $20 million by using non-purchase cards. Out of 729,000 non-purchase card purchases, they missed 279,000 chances (38 percent) to get a rebate. That would have come to $4 million and could zoom to $133 million over the next five years. The OIG's recommendation is that the VA Office of Management "establish policies and procedures" to increase the use of non-purchase card micro-purchases. There were reasons for the non-use of the cards, the OIG says: use of vendors who didn't take purchase cards, payments to veterans for tort claims and pharmacy co-payments. It's possible, however, that the reason the non-purchase cards weren't used can be found in the manual on the use of those cards. It says the spending limit is $3,000 -- except for "acquisitions of construction," which has a $2,000 limit. Or how about "acquisitions of services subject to the Service Contract Act," which has a $2,500 limit. Or how about those purchases "established by FAR 2.101," which has a $150,000 limit. What follows in the manual are many, many pages of details about the specifics of card use and the penalties for abuse. Given all that, I don't know if I'd want to take a chance on using a non-purchase card either.

Tomato and Basil Onion Soup ● When preparing outdoor furniture for winter storage, it's important to give it a good cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and take it to the local selfserve car wash? The specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies. -- JoAnn ● "While at a backyard barbecue now that the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don't add water or anything. They taste really good without taking up space on the grill." -- J.V. in Alabama ● To keep algae from growing in your backyard birdbath, add a few copper pennies. Or you can get a small piece of copper pipe from the home-improvement store. It keeps the algae from getting out of control. ● When you need an extra garbage bag, like during a party or while doing lawn chores, try this cool trick: Use a large pop-up laundry bin, and line it with a lawnand-leaf garbage bag. Use chip clips to secure it at the top if you need to. ● "We keep a regular-size galvanized steel trash can with lid out on our deck for the kids' toys. It's big enough to hold everything, convenient enough to drag around the yard to clean up, and the lid protects the toys from the weather and bugs!" -- W.K. in Illinois ● "I had a plastic storage bin that cracked, and I was about to throw it out when my son stopped me. He cut holes in either side and used it to cover the outdoor pipes that stick up out of the ground. Now they will be protected from cold temperatures, and from the weed eater through the rest of fall. My boy!" --T.R. in South Carolina
Homegrown tomatoes soon will be nothing but a pleasant memory. But before they are, why not stir up a pot of this wonderful soup. It's perfect for all of us tomato and basil fans!

Just Say 'No' Nearly every senior I know has less free time in retirement than he or she thought they would. A big reason is that others assumed the new retiree would have loads of free time and would therefore be willing and able to ... (fill in the blank). In other words, the so-called free time quickly vanished under the requests of others. A recent study compared quality of life with the amount of free time available to a retiree. It was originally assumed that more free time meant a better quality of life. Not so, researchers said. Instead, the management of the time we do have leads to a better quality of life. The researchers went so far as to suggest that seniors be taught time-management techniques. I don't know if that's really necessary, do you? We spent the first part of our lives managing our time, either for work or family obligations, or both. What we need to learn upon first retiring is the word "no." "Oh, you're retiring? Would you please watch the kids during the day to save me the babysitting costs?" Answer: No. "Can we count on you to join the board at the senior center?" Answer: No. "Will you sign up to deliver meals to shut-ins?" Answer: No. No, no, no ... at least until you get a handle on your free time once you've retired. Give it at least a couple of months. During that time, explore some of your options: a hobby you never had time for, uninterrupted hours in the library, sewing the new drapes that have sat untouched for years ... you get the idea. Then, once you learn what "free time" you really have, maybe you can say "yes" now and then. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.
