TIDBITS® GOES TO THE

MUSEUM by Janet Spencer

Taking a trip but not sure where to go? Tidbits has some suggestions for you. Read on! SCIENCE & INVENTION ● In Baltimore, MD visit the Mount Vernon Museum of Incandescent Lighting. Highlights (pun intended) include the largest bulb ever made, which is 4 ft (1.2 m) high and 3 ft (.9 m) tall throwing out 50,000 watts. It was manufactured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s discovery and could only be lit for 30 seconds at a time before overheating. It sits next to the smallest bulb ever made, which is the size of a pin point. Bulbs this tiny are still used in surgery and to inspect missile parts. The museum also boasts a cockpit bulb from the Enola Gay- the plane that dropped the bomb on Japan; a bulb from the Statue of Liberty’s original torch; and about 8,000 other lightbulbs of historical significance, including some of Edison’s early prototypes. What a bright idea! ● In North Canton, Ohio, visit the Hoover Historical Center and see over 100 different models of vacuums. There’s the 1956 Walk-onAir model which was lifted on its own exhaust and floated behind the user, a selection of early models which weighed over 100 lbs (45 kg), and the computerized French model which understands four languages.

MEDICAL MUSEUMS ● In Minneapolis visit the Museum of Questionable Devices where you can be cured of what ails you. Grow back your amputated body parts using radio waves. Cure skin ailments with electricity. Revitalize your blood using magnetic adhesive bandages. There’s a wealth of baldness cures right next to items designed to increase your height. Read about a man named Eben MacBurney Byers who, in the 1920s, believed the claims made by the Radnithor Corporation which said their product would increase virility. He consumed 1,400 half-ounce bottles of Radnithor, which consisted of distilled water laced with radioactive isotopes. He died of radium poisoning. ● In Columbus, OH, visit the Optometry Museum. A local professor of optometry wrote letters to celebrities asking for the donation of their used glasses. On display here are John Denver’s granny glasses, engraved with the words “Rocky Mountain High;” race car driver Bobby Rahal’s spectacles, broken from a crash into a wall; Elvis’s sunglasses, worth an estimated $7,000; Mary Kay’s glasses which are, of course, pink; Joan Collin’s glasses with matching earrings; and former President Bush’s glasses which became warped while he was reading in the sauna.

Welcome to Goose Tips! This is the busiest time of the year for most of us. We have decorations to put up, presents to wrap, visits to Santa, lights to see , and family to see. Whenever possible, I like to give a homemade gift rather than a store bought, but sometimes I just don’t have the time in the kitchen that I’d like. Ironically, the time of year I’d like to cook the most is also the time of year I have the least amount of time to do it. Everyone knows that candies taste better if you let the kids do it. they’re sweeter than us. Getting the kids in the kitchen is important to me, but especially at Christmas. If I’m make something for them to give, I want them to enjoy the happiness and learn the importance of giving something you personally had a hand in making. In my mind this is one of those activities that helps them to grow up with their heads in the right place.

Holiday Plants, Foods Put Pets at Risk DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've heard over and over that it's dangerous for dogs to eat chocolate. My friend told me they shouldn't eat grapes, either. My dog "Rascal" snapped up two grapes that fell off of a party tray at a recent event I held, and he is just fine. Was my friend wrong? -- Carla in Laredo, Texas DEAR CARLA: Your friend isn't wrong -- a number of foods that are safe for humans shouldn't be consumed by dogs. Cats are at risk from certain foods, too. Rascal didn't suffer any visible effects from eating a couple of grapes, but that might not be the case next time. Eating grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs -- it can affect their nervous system. Sugar-free candies containing xylitol can cause dogs' blood pressure to drop, and in large quantities can cause liver failure. Onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and

avocados can all be toxic, according to the ASPCA. Most of the above foods also affect cats negatively, as do caffeine, tomatoes and mushrooms. Keep cats away from houseplants, especially lilies. Plants popular around Christmastime, such as holly and poinsettia, are toxic and need to be placed out of reach. Because the holidays are a hectic time, include a plan for keeping your pets safe during get-togethers and parties. Don't let dogs and cats roam freely during a party or while gifts are being unwrapped. Place them in a quiet room with food and water until wrapping, food crumbs and other dangers are cleared away and you have more time to pay attention to them. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS ● In the town of Angier, North Carolina, visit the Gourd Museum. Here you will find gourds that have been made into dolls, lamps, musical instruments, toys, and more. There are antique gourds, gourds shaped like animals, gourds that are works of art, and gourds of religious significance. There’s a “gourdian” knot, a gold-embossed gourd dating to 1804, a gourd Ferris wheel, gourd puzzles, and a depiction of the Last Supper made out of gourd seeds. ● In Statesboro, GA visit the U.S. National Tick Collection. Around a million ticks float inside 120,000 vials of alcohol on campus at Georgia Southern University, which is one of four different tick museums around the world. This collection proudly exhibits 760 of the 850 known species of tick. The biggest is about the size of a quarter and the smallest would fit on the head of a pin. ● In Dallas visit the Cockroach Hall of Fame, operated by a local exterminator. Each year the Hall of Fame sponsors a roach contest with two categories: the Largest Roach contest, and the Roach Art contest. Winners are added to the Hall of Fame. To qualify for the largest roach contest, entries must be at least 2.09 inches (5 cm) in length. The winner receives $1,000 and a year’s worth of pest control. To enter the Roach Art contest, dead roaches are costumed and posed in various scenes and settings. Past entrants included such things as Marilyn MonRoach complete with blond hair, white dress, and high heels. There’s also a Liberace look-alike named Liberoache, as well as Roach Perot. About 2,000 entries are received each year.

● On Dec. 26, 1908, Jack Johnson becomes the first black American to win the world heavyweight title when he knocks out Canadian Tommy Burns in the 14th round in a championship bout near Sydney, Australia. Johnson held the heavyweight title until 1915. ● On Dec. 25, 1914, just after midnight on Christmas morning, German troops fighting in World War I cease firing their guns and artillery, and commence to sing Christmas carols. At points along the eastern and western fronts, Russian, French and British soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing. ● On Dec. 28, 1938, silent-film star Florence Lawrence commits suicide in Beverly Hills, Calif. Lawrence also was an inventor: She designed the first "auto signaling arm," a mechanical turn signal, along with the first mechanical brake signal. She did not patent these inventions, however, and as a result she received no credit for -- or profit from -- either one. ● On Dec. 23, 1946, President Harry Truman appoints an amnesty board to review cases of conscientious objectors who were imprisoned after refusing to serve during World War II. Of the 15,000 violators of the World War II Selective Service Act, only 1,500 were considered entitled to full amnesty. ● On Dec. 29, 1956, the New York Times leaks the news that the United States is preparing a major policy statement on the Middle East. The U.S. would oppose any Soviet military intervention in the region, and Middle Eastern powers could count on economic help and military help in opposing any Soviet aggression. ● On Dec. 27, 1968, Apollo 8, the first manned mission to orbit the moon, returns safely to Earth after an historic six-day journey. Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, Jr., and William Anders were the first human beings to see the dark side of the moon. ● On Dec. 24, 1972, comedian Bob Hope gives what he says is his final Christmas show to U.S. forces in Saigon. The show marked Hope's ninth consecutive Christmas appearance in Vietnam.

● It was industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who was born into a poor Scottish family and emigrated to the U.S. as a teen, who made the following sage observation: "There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration." ● There are 10 times more cells from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi in and on our bodies than there are human cells. ● If you're like 66 percent of American adults, you'd bend over to pick up a penny you found in the street. Nearly three-quarters of adults would pick up a nickel. ● You might be surprised to learn that drinking tea increased the life expectancy of the British -- and even more surprised to learn why. It wasn't any beneficial compound found in the tea itself; rather, it was the act of boiling the water, which had the effect of killing pathogens found in the untreated water that was largely in use in England at that time. Also, once the Brits started drinking tea, they became addicted to the caffeine and therefore drank quite a bit more boiled water than had been their wont, decreasing even further their exposure to the pathogens that caused illness.

● The United States Department of Commerce has designated approximately 30 houses across the country as authentic haunted houses. ● Astronauts grew roses in space just to find out if a rose grown in microgravity would smell as sweet. The researchers found that it did, indeed, smell as sweet, but the smell was different from that of the same variety of rose grown the old-fashioned way. FOOD & DRINK MUSUEMS ● In Goodlettsville, TN, visit the Museum of Beverage Containers which displays 8,500 different beer cans and 18,000 soda pop cans. There’s the 1935 Krueger’s Cream Ale can which was the first beer can ever made, and the Cliquot Club soda can which was the first pop can and came out in 1938. There’s Pussy Pop for cats and K-9 cola for dogs, and camouflage beer cans made by the U.S. military. There’s even political pop: during the 1964 presidential campaign, candidate Barry Goldwater produced Goldwater Soda and billed it as “the right drink for the conservative taste” while Lyndon B. Johnson countered with Johnson Juice and hawked it as “a drink for health care.” ● In Columbus, GA, the Lunch Box Museum is now rumored to be closed. When it was open, visitors could view 3,000 boxes and 2,000 thermoses. Regular tin lunch boxes pails used to be the norm until Walt Disney came out with a Mickey Mouse lunch box in the 1930s. In the 1950s lunch box mania swept the nation when Hopalong Cassidy was pictured on the front of a metal box with matching thermos. Over 600,000 sold in the first year and over 120 million lunch boxes of all sorts were purchased across the U.S. over the next two decades. In 1987 steel lunch boxes were replaced with softer plastic models, reportedly after irate parents lobbied the Florida state legislature to ban metal boxes due to injuries sustained in cafeteria disputes when children used them as weapons.

FOOD & DRINK MUSUEMS cont'd ● In Mount Horeb, WI, visit the Mustard Museum. Here they display over 3,800 different kinds of mustard, making it the world’s largest collection. Samples of 150 varieties are available for taste tests. Beware of the habañero mustard, described frankly by its manufacturer as the mustard from hell. Watch the “Mustard-piece Theater” video and read the newsletter The Proper Mustard which is billed as ‘yellow journalism at its best.’ There’s also a recipe book which includes the recipe called ‘Crude Person’s Mustard Delight’ which consists of alternating swigs of cheap beer with spoonfuls of mustard. No ketchup is allowed and in fact visitors must pass through a ketchup detector before entering. No mayo, either. The museum sponsors National Mustard Day every August 5. You can even see a modified Oscar Mayer Wienermobile now called the Lamborg Wienie. ● The Donner Party Museum in Truckee, California, memorializes the doomed pioneers who resorted to cannibalizing their dead while stranded in the mountains over the winter.

WOMEN IN HISTORY EMILY MURPHY & THE FAMOUS FIVE ● It all started back in 1916, when several women in Alberta, Canada, were arrested for prostitution under the flimsiest of pretenses. Several of their friends wanted to attend the trial, including Emily Murphy. However, they were turned away at the door to the courtroom because the judge said the testimony “was not fit for mixed company.” Emily went to the Attorney General of Alberta, arguing that the government needed to set up a court presided over by women in order to try other women. He agreed with her, and to her surprise, appointed her as the magistrate. ● Unfortunately, when she showed up to her first day on the job, a lawyer for her first client dismissed her ruling because, under the law as defined by the British North America Act, only “qualified persons” were allowed to rule in court, and the lawyer said that “qualified persons” referred to men only, and not women, since “persons” elsewhere in the document were referred to as “he” and never “she.” Another portion of the law noted that, “Women are persons in matters of pains and penalties, but are not persons in matters of rights and privileges.”

What was the home city of Mary and Joseph? Capernaum, Nazareth, Aphek, Shechem 6. Of these, which wasn't a gift from the wise men? Silver, Myrrh, Gold, Frankincense

Page 7

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 FAMOUS FIVE “PERSONS” cont’d ● Emily took exception to this, and carried her case to court. In 1917, the Supreme Court of Alberta ruled that women were indeed “persons.” However, this ruling applied only to Alberta and not to the rest of Canada. Emily Murphy decided to press the issue by applying as a candidate for Senator. The Prime Minister of Canada rejected her application, stating that Emily was not recognized as a “person” and only “qualified persons” were allowed to be appointed to political office. ● Half a million Canadians signed a petition asking for Emily to be appointed Senator, but the Prime Minister rejected the request. ● In 1927, Emily teamed up with four women’s rights activists, now known as the Famous Five, in order to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada. They asked, “Does the word ‘persons’ in Section 24, of The British North America Act, 1867, include female persons?” In 1928, the Supreme Court answered, “No.” The decision said that in 1867 when the law was written, women did not vote, run for office, or serve as elected officials, and because the British House of Lords did not have a woman member, Canada should not have women members in their Senate, either. ● Unwilling to accept that decision, the Famous Five appealed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England, which was the highest court of appeal for Canada, in what became known as “The Persons Case.” ● In 1929, the Council announced their decision that, “Yes, women are persons… and may become Members of the Senate of Canada.” The decision also said that “the exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word ‘persons’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?”

Many expected Emily Murphy to be appointed, but the Prime Minister was a Liberal and so was Cairine Wilson. ● Nearly 80 years later, the Senate voted to posthumously name the Famous Five Canada’s first “honorary senators” for their work on women’s rights. ● Today, 38 out of 105 Senate seats are held by women.

TOOTHPASTE ● No bathroom is complete without a tube of toothpaste. Did you ever notice that there’s no ingredients label on toothpaste? Here’s why! ● Toothpaste is about 30% water. Mixed with water is chalk, the crushed remains of ancient ocean creatures. Their exoskeletons retain their sharpness, and they are one of the few things tough enough to clean tooth enamel. ● Titanium dioxide is added to the chalk/ water mix. That’s the stuff that goes into white wall paint to make it bright. On your teeth, it paints over the yellow for at least a few hours till it dissolves and is swallowed. ● To keep this chalk/water/paint mixture from drying out, glycerine glycol is whipped in. You know glycerine glycol as an ingredient in anti-freeze. TOOTHPASTE DISASTERS ● Next they add a concoction from the seaweed known scientifically as Chrondrus Crispus. This oozes and stretches in all directions and holds the mass together. ● A dollop of paraffin (a petroleum derivative) keeps the mixture smooth. ● Next it needs a generous amount of detergent, for what good would toothpaste be if it weren’t for the foam and suds? The answer is, it would be perfectly good without foam and suds, but the public demands foam and suds.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 TOOTHPASTE DISASTERS cont'd ● However, detergent tastes horrible, so into the tube go peppermint oil, menthol crystals, and saccharin. ● Is that all there is to toothpaste? Not quite! To kill the bacteria that creep into the tube from the bathroom counter, we need a dose of formaldehyde— the same variety that’s used in anatomy labs. Does this recipe for toothpaste turn you off? Take heart— studies have shown that brushing with plain water can be just as effective. ● In the 1950s, Pepsodent decided they wanted to sell more toothpaste overseas. They started an advertising campaign in Asia based on their American slogan, “You’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!” However, in that part of the world many natives chew on a treat called the betel nut, just as Americans chew gum. Betel nut is quite expensive, and it also stains the teeth. Blackened teeth are a status symbol and a sign of wealth. No one wanted white teeth and the Pepsodent campaign failed dismally. ● The Colgate company tried to get into the food business when they came out with Colgate Kitchen Entrees but no one wanted to buy food from a toothpaste company. ● John Spencer-Churchill, 10th Duke of Marlborough, lived in Blenheim Palace in splendor. Once he spent the night with his daughter, who lived in modest circumstances. In the morning she was surprised to hear him bellowing down the hallway that his toothbrush was not working properly. When she investigated, she found him upset because his toothbrush was failing to foam. She explained to her wealthy father that a toothbrush did not foam unless a toothpaste or powder was applied to it first— a task which the Duke’s valet did for him every morning. ● Judy Schwartz and Rickey Berkowitz were shipwrecked in the Java Sea in 1985. They lived on nothing but toothpaste for three weeks. After their rescue, Colgate-Palmolive awarded them 400 tubes of toothpaste. ● Americans use half a million pounds of toothpaste in a day. However, women use more toothpaste then men. About 75% of all women brush their teeth twice a day, but only half of men do, according to the American Dental Association.

Is Your VA ID Card a Security Risk?

Over 50 Varieties

Available By the Pound or Wholesale By the Case

If you have an older ID card issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs, your Social Security number could be at risk for theft. If your card is pre-2004, your date of birth and Social Security numbers are right on the front of the card. Since 2011, the VA hasn't issued ID cards with those two numbers, but that hasn't made the information much safer. Here's why: The information on the barcode on your card can be read by apps easily available online. "App" stands for application, a mini-program that gets installed in a cellphone, like software in a computer. With a phone app scanner held near the card, the Social Security number will pop up. The VA has known about this since at least 2011, when it issued an online alert. (Were you notified of the risks of the card?) A message on the VA website says, "Some bar code readers, including those available as applications on cellphones, can scan the bar code on the front of the card and reveal the veteran's Social Security number." When I looked for phone apps that would read an ID card barcode, I didn't have to go far. I found them everywhere, including brand-name phone app sites. One scanner works up to 20 inches away. New VA ID cards will be coming out in 2014. Since it's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil, call your local medical center and inquire about getting one of the new cards as soon as they come out. Your best bet until then: Treat your VA ID card like your Social Security card and leave it at home, not in your wallet, unless you're going for an appointment or need it for some reason.

Holiday Bread

Don't have time to make breakfast on Christmas morning? The day before, bake this simple stollen, a quick version of the traditional sweet bread. 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter or margarine 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1 cup dried tart cherries or other dried fruit, coarsely chopped 1/3 cup pecans, toasted and chopped 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh lemon peel 2 large eggs Confectioners' sugar (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease large cookie sheet. In large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. With pastry blender or using two knives scissors-fashion, cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in ricotta, dried cherries, pecans, vanilla, lemon peel and eggs until wellcombined. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. With floured hands, gently knead dough two or three times to blend. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 10 by 8-inch oval. Fold oval lengthwise, bringing top half over so that bottom of dough extends by about 1 inch. 3. Place stollen on prepared cookie sheet. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer stollen to wire rack; cool completely. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar to coat just before serving if you like. Makes 16 slices. ● Each serving: About 205 calories, 10g total fat (5g saturated), 48mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 27g total carbs, 1g dietary fiber, 5g protein.

Q: This is our first year in a house that has a working fireplace, but we've never used one before. We'd like to have a crackling fire during holiday get-togethers and throughout the winter, but so far I can't get one to light. I just get a lot of smoke in the room and no flame. Any tips? -- Dale C., Madison, Wis. A: It can be a little tricky to get a nice fire going in the fireplace if you've never done it before, and there are some safety tips you need to follow as well. First, be certain the fireplace is safe to use. If it was inspected and cleaned when you moved in, you're good to go; but if it hasn't, or you don't know when it was last inspected, contact a chimney cleaning service. Make sure the area around the fireplace is safe: move furniture, rugs, boxes, paper and other flammable items several feet away. If you don't have a fire extinguisher nearby, get one and place it in an accessible spot. To light a fire, you'll need several pieces of wood in various sizes, along with old newspaper or a firestarter stick. The small bundles of firewood sold in grocery stores and home-improvement stores are expensive, but they'll do for a first-time fire, as they're mediumsize and usually cut to fit most fireboxes. You should also go out for a walk and collect an armful of fallen, dry twigs and small branches. With your fuel ready, it's time to get started. Open the fireplace damper fully -- this flap is located at the top of the firebox (the area in which the fire burns) and when opened allows air to flow up the chimney and outward. It's probably the reason your house was filling with smoke when you tried to light a fire before. Twist a half-sheet of newspaper into a cylinder. Holding it inside the firebox, light one end. Hold the burning end a few inches underneath damper for about 30 seconds or until you see smoke from the burning paper flowing freely upward into the chimney flue. Stack your firewood prior to lighting the fire. Opinions vary on how to build the stack, but it's important to make sure air flows freely between the logs. I prefer stacking four small- to medium-sized logs in a square or triangular pattern. Tuck an assortment of twigs, shredded newspaper and small branches between and underneath the logs. Don't go overboard -- the kindling can flare up too high when lit. Carefully light the kindling, starting near the back of the log stack and working your way forward. Once the initial flame has died down somewhat -- but before it disappears -- carefully feed in more twigs and branches. Properly seasoned logs should catch within a few minutes, but don't be disappointed if you have to repeat the process. Once a good fire is going, make sure the protective screen is in place. Remember to never leave a fire unattended. And once the fire is out, don't remove the cinders until they are completely cold, and dispose of them in a fire-resistant container, away from the house or garage. HOME TIP: Avoid burning pine logs in your fireplace. They can cause creosote, a sticky substance, to build up in the chimney more quickly, creating a fire hazard. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

Scammers Emboldened; Seniors Are Target The U.S. Senate has a Special Committee on Aging, as well as an Aging Fraud Hotline. While it handles any type of complaint about fraud against a senior, it's been especially busy lately because of Obamacare, also known as Affordable Care Act. The scammers are out there, and they're targeting seniors. The committee's new press release lists some tricks scammers might use to cheat you:

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com

● If you have Medicare, you don't need to buy Obamacare, period. If someone tries to sell you a policy knowing you receive Medicare, it's illegal. ● The scammers will try to get you to disclose personal information, such as your Medicare or Social Security number, or your bank account number. With even some of that information, your identity can be compromised and your savings stolen. ● Scammers can show up at your door, or might phone you or send you email. They might pretend to just verify information, hoping you'll correct them with the right information. ● Hang up on anyone who calls and says they're from Social Security or Medicare. They will never call you, unless you've made arrangements with them in advance. ● Medicare open enrollment ended on Dec. 7, but scammers likely will say that "something" went wrong with your enrollment information, and they need to get it again from you.

The Aging Fraud Hotline can help with any number of issues related to fraud against seniors: identity theft, Medicare, retirement savings, phone scams, Social Security and more. If you need to file a complaint, call it toll-free at 1-855-303-9470. There's also a mail form on its website at www.aging.senate.gov. Click on the Contact link and fill in the blanks. To contact Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE. To report identity theft, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-438-4338 or go online to www. ftc.gov/idtheft. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

Weddings As You Wish!!

It’s Never Too Late to Be You The big voice answered, “Cabbage worm, be Little Orley.” And he was. The moral of the story is that only you can be you and being you is the best thing you can do for yourself, for those closest to you and for the rest of the world as well. In case you’ve forgotten, my thesis for is booklet is, that in the 10,000-year history of humanity, there has never been anyone like you. And throughout the unknown millenniums to come, there will never be anyone like you again. What does that mean? It means you are valuable beyond wealth, you are here for a reason, you are full of potential and no matter how old or young you may be it is not too late for you to be you. It’s time to give up on being a cabbage worm or whatever it is that you or other people think you should be. Start today to be just you, the unique, matchless, real YOU. But don’t be content with the least you can be, be the most you can be. After all, you’re the only one who can be fully you because You’re Something Special!

“Little Orley’s Adventures as a Worm” was a 78-rpm children’s record. You’ve probably never seen a 78-rpm record so it’s likely you’ve never heard of Little Orley. But I have and I do and I’ve never forgotten Little Orley. It is the story about a little boy who one day wished he was a cabbage worm because as he worked in the cabbage field he observed that a cabbage worm never had to work; it just sat on a cabbage leaf, enjoyed the sun and ate cabbage. So one day Little Orley said, “Golly, I wish I was a cabbage worm!” Just as Little Orley made his wish he heard a big voice saying, “Little Orley, do you really want to be a cabbage worm!” “I sure do,” said Little Orley. The big voice boomed back, “Then Little Orley BE a cabbage worm.” And he was. The rest of the story is about Little Orley’s incredible and frightening adventures as a cabbage worm, which included the life threatening dodges of a chef’s knife in the kitchen of a fancy hotel. The story ends when Little Orley realizes that being Little Orley was a whole lot better than being a cabbage worm. He speaks, “I sure wish I was Little Orley again.”

Preserve Your Family History! New book shows you how! “Hey Ron, here’s a copy of your family genealogy,” a close friend and distant relative said to me as he handed me a copy of a professionally prepared 200+ page book of our family tree. I thanked him for the surprise gift and promised to cherish it. It took a while but eventually I located my family branches. Once found, I closed the book and never looked at it again. Then it hit me, a genealogy is a wonderful thing to have but it lacks personality. It has boxes, lines, names, and dates, but has no character, soul, or vitality. I thought, “I sure would like to hear the story of the two brothers who came here from England in the1700s to start my family in the New World.” I wondered, “Why did one move to Chicago and the other to Missouri?” None of those answers were available in that book – just names, dates and places. Alas, I could do nothing about those relatives for whom nothing is written nor anything remembered. But I could do something about those who were still living. So here’s what I did: I created a system to take what is called an oral history of my own mom and dad. I spent hours researching and developed a unique question and answer format, then I recorded each of their life’s story on both audio and video tape. My next step was to put that system in a book so others could do the same. The origial 1988 version of the book titled “Your Family Heritage, a Guide to Preserving Family History,” sold for $19.95 and helped thousands of people across the land. I also lectured on the subject for several years at the Colorado Historical Society. Now this updated, expanded, and newly formated version of the book is available on Amazon.com for only $3.99 Everyone can now have the tools to preserve their family history - including YOU! Think about your family tree. Wouldn’t it be exciting if you could experience the personalities, hear the voices and enjoy the life stories of the people on

your family tree? Just imagine what you would do if someone handed you a video recording of your grandmother telling how her family lost everything during the Dust Bowl and what they did to survive and later prosper. Today you can take a few easy-to-follow steps to preserve the memories, insights, opinions, wisdom, faces and voices of those of your family members still living. How to Record Your Family History is designed to help you do just that. With this book you will learn how to capture with audio or video recordings the colorful personality of each living member of your family. Also, this book will help you document photographs and family heirlooms so your descendants will know the answer to the questions so oft heard when sorting through old photographs, “Who is that?”, “When was this photo taken,” and “That’s Grandma, but I wonder where the picture was taken?” Don’t delay! It’s likely in many cases you postponed too long these steps and have lost the faces and voices you wish you could see and hear again. You still have time to capture the stories of your aging relatives. And as long as YOU can hear and speak, YOUR stories too can be preserved for generations to come. Hesitate no longer. For more information about How to Record Your Family History please visit our comprehensive website: RecordYourFamilyHistory.com. Peruse the table of contents, find more information about the book, and find a link to Amazon.com where you can purchase the book and download it to your PC, tablet, SmartPhone or Kindle for only $3.99. Now you can trim YOUR family tree with the oral record and pictorial images that make the written genealogy come to life. Ron Ross, Author Loveland, CO

Q: I have a grandfather clock that I have been told was made in 1820 or maybe 1880. I would like to know how much it is worth. -- Barbara, Albuquerque, N.M. A: Let me see if I have this correct. You have a clock, and apparently don't know the maker and aren't even certain when it was made. Even though I can't help you, you do have several options. You can hire the services of a professional appraiser to document and research your clock. This would not be a free service, but in my opinion it is well worth the fee since it is not a guess but an expert opinion. Your second option is to contact clock dealers in your city for their input. One of the better general references is the "Antique Trader Clocks Price Guide" edited by Kyle Husfloen (Krause Books, $17.95). This book features more than 1,400 entries covering timepieces from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Q: I have two Edison machines and am trying to find cylinders to play on them. I have searched antiques stores throughout my area but have been unable to locate more than two or three. Can you help me? -- Steve, Rochester, N.Y. A: Richard Gesner is the owner of The Music Connection, New Hampshire's largest and oldest record shop. In addition to LPs, 45s, 78s, cassettes, compact discs and 8-tracks, Gesner has an excellent selection of Edison cylinders. He also stocks steel needles, record sleeves and Discwasher record-cleaning kits. His contact information is 1711 South Willow St., Manchester, NH 03103. Q: I found a record in my dad's collection that I think could be valuable. It is Carl Sandburg's "Flat Rock Ballads" on Decca. -- Bob, El Paso, Texas A: I found your recording referenced in "Goldmine Record Album Price Guide" by Dave Thompson (Krause, $27.99). According to Thompson, your record was issued in 1959 and is worth $20. The recently released 7th edition of this excellent guide is a must for collectors, since it has updated prices for more than 100,000 American vinyl LPs issued since 1948. It is easy to use with a well-organized format.

Was Childhood Illness a Type of Hepatitis?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a female in my 70s. When I was 12 years old, I, along with a younger brother and older sister, all had what our doctor called "yellow jaundice." We all were very sick for about two weeks. It was very contagious and a good percentage of the schoolchildren had it, although none of my family members at home caught it from us. I know jaundice in itself is not a disease. Could we have had hepatitis? Are there any long-term effects from it? -- A.P. ANSWER: It does indeed sound like hepatitis. The most common form of contagious hepatitis is called hepatitis A. It comes from contaminated food or water, but it sounds like your family was very careful if nobody else at home caught it. Fortunately, hepatitis A does not have any long-term effects, the way hepatitis B and C do. Acute mononucleosis sometimes causes hepatitis, but if a lot of kids had it at the same time, I suspect it came from food. There is now a vaccine for hepatitis A, which is recommended for all travelers. The booklet on hepatitis explains the three different kinds -- A, B and C. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 503W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash)

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I looked in the mirror this morning and couldn't believe what I saw. My right eye was bright red. It looked like someone had punched me. When my husband saw it, he asked if he had hit me while he was asleep. He didn't. It doesn't hurt. My vision is perfect. My eye looks frightful. Do I need to see a doctor? -- Y.T. ANSWER: Your question is asked repeatedly. My longdistance guess is a subconjunctival hemorrhage. The conjunctiva is a cellophane-like covering of the eye. Beneath it is a network of invisible blood vessels. When one of those delicate vessels breaks, blood covers that part of the eye. Coughing, sneezing or straining causes the breakage. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. The eye looks awful, but no real harm is done. The blood is absorbed in about a week. You can hurry it up by putting warm compresses over the closed eye. You need to see a doctor if the eye begins to pain you, if the blood stays for longer than a week or if it happens time and again. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a question that popped into my mind. What causes cauliflower ears? I don't hear this talked about anymore. It used to be a common thing for boxers. -- J.J.

ANSWER: Cauliflower ears are swollen, bumpy and disfigured. They result when there's bleeding between the ear's skin and the ear's cartilage. If a pool of blood forms in that area, unless it's drained, the blood can eventually become calcified. You don't see them as much anymore because helmets are used in most contact sports now.
