by Janet Spencer January 1st is National “Z” Day, whose purpose is to give recognition on the first day of the year to people and places whose name begins with the letter Z and are always listed or thought of last. Come along with Tidbits as we consider Z! Z FACTS • Z is the most rarely used letter in the English language. However, it’s more common in American English than it is in British English because Americans use word endings such as “-ize” instead of “-ise” (realize vs realise) and “-ization” instead of “-isation” (civilization vs civilisation). The American method of spelling is derived from Greek origins whereas the British spelling comes from the French language. • Why do Americans pronounce the letter as “zee” while Brits, Canadians, and others say “zed”? It harks back to the original Greek letter, “zeta” which came from the Old French “zede.” After Americans split from the British, a lot of language was re-formed as regional dialects gained a foothold. According to the Concise Oxford Companion, “The modification of zed to zee appears to have been by analogy with bee, dee, vee, etc.” Lye’s New Spelling Book (published in 1677) was the first to list “zee” as the “correct” pronunciation, and Webster followed suit in his dictionary of 1827.

Z FACTS cont'd • During the Viet Nam war when young American men were defecting to Canada, they often betrayed their American origins when asked to recite the alphabet by border guards. “Zed” is the only letter of the alphabet that Canadians pronounce differently from Americans. Zink, Ziegler, Zeno, & Zarb etc. • Mr. T. M. Zink of Iowa died in 1930 and left his $100,000 fortune to fund a womanless library. He specified that his daughter should receive $5 and his widow a single penny. The rest of the fortune was to be held in trust for 75 years, until the year 2005 when Zink’s womanless library would be funded. Signs reading “No Women Admitted” were to be posted above the doors, and no books or art by women were to be allowed. Fortunately, Zink’s family successfully contested the will. • In 1974 the Doublespeak Award for outrageous language went to Ron Ziegler, who was Pres. Nixon’s press secretary. When asked whether a certain bunch of Watergate tapes was still intact— a question that could have been answered with ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘I don’t know’— Ziegler used a colossal 99 word sentence that left everybody scratching their heads. During Watergate, Zielger said, “If my answers sound confusing, I think they are confusing because the questions are confusing, and the situation is confusing and I’m not in a position to clarify it.”

Should In-Laws Pets Get Holiday Gifts? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm going to be a guest at my in-laws' house for Christmas. They have two small dogs. Is it appropriate for me to buy gifts for the dogs as well as for them? -- Suzanne C., Sarasota, Fla. DEAR SUZANNE: Most owners these days see their pets as a part of the family, so it's not unusual to see a gift or three for their dog, cat, bird and so on. However, trying to decide whether to purchase a gift for someone else's pet, and what kind of gift to get, can be tricky. It helps if you know your in-laws well and are familiar with their pets. Start by asking your husband if it's appropriate to give a gift to the dogs, and if he knows of anything they can't have. He may have some idea, but don't be disappointed if

he really doesn't know. If you're on good terms with other members of his family, ask them. And it's probably all right to ask his parents if it's OK to get something for the dogs. You'll have to do some feeling out in any case. You may get a firm "no" from your in-laws, but don't be hurt; they usually have their reasons. But if the answer is noncommittal, or hopefully, gracious, be sure to ask if there is any toy or other item that the in-laws would prefer for the dogs. If and when you purchase gifts for the dogs, avoid bigticket items. A chew toy (appropriately sized for the dogs) or a helpful accessory, like a clip-on doggie bag dispenser for the leash, is a thoughtful gesture. Whenever possible, I like to give a homemade gift rather than a store bought, but sometimes I just don’t have the time in the kitchen that I’d like. Ironically, the time of year I’d like to cook the most is also the time of year I have the least amount of time to do it. Everyone knows that candies taste better if you let the kids do it. they’re sweeter than us. Getting the kids in the kitchen is important to me, but especially at Christmas. If I’m make something for them to give, I want them to enjoy the happiness and learn the importance of giving something you personally had a hand in making. In my mind this is one of those activities that helps them to grow up with their heads in the right place. Easily turnout Christmas candies in very little time with a low budget. You’ll need: 1 package of chocolate almond bark 36 mini muffin liners 2 cups Rice Crispies Melt almond bark and stir in cereal. Spoon mixture into muffin liners, allow 1 to 2 hours to set. Z FACTS cont'd • Greek philosopher Zeno in the year 264 B.C. suffered a broken toe and decided this was God’s sign that he had lived long enough. He killed himself, dying at age 98. • Florenz Ziegfeld of the Ziegfeld Follies once offered Gracie Allen $750 a week to appear in a show in London. Gracie asked how much the pay would be if her husband, George Burns, appeared too. “Five hundred,” was the answer. • The story goes that Greek painters Zeuxis and Parrhasius had a feud concerning who could produce the most realistic painting. Finally they agreed to a paint-off. Zeuxis painted a picture of a boy holding a bowl of grapes. It was so realistically done that birds came down to peck at the picture. Then Zeuxis asked Parrhasius to draw back the curtain covering the painting he had drawn. At this point Zeuxis realized that what he thought was a curtain covering a painting was actually a painting of a curtain covering a painting. Zeuxis had been able to fool the birds, but Parrhasius had been able to fool Zeuxis. • In 1975, Frank Zarb spent $25,000 and used 19,000 gallons (7,200 liters) of fuel flying around the U.S. to lecture on the need to conserve energy. He used a plush Air Force jet that burned enough fuel in one hour to supply the average American driver with enough gasoline to drive for an entire year.

¥ On Jan. 2, 1811, Timothy Pickering, a Federalist from Massachusetts, becomes the first U.S. senator to be censured when the Senate approves a motion against him. Pickering was accused of violating congressional law by publicly revealing secret documents. ¥ On Dec. 30, 1862, the U.S.S. Monitor sinks in a storm off Cape Hatteras, N.C. Just nine months earlier, the ship had been part of a revolution in naval warfare when the ironclad dueled to a standstill with the C.S.S. His daring came at a cost, though; he spent six months in a hospital, recovering from injuries due to his feat. The programmer then opened an account for himself under the assumed name of Mr. Zyglit. Things went fine for six months. Then a Polish immigrant legitimately named Mr. Zyzov opened a new account. When he went to the bank to ask them why so much money was being deposited in his account, an investigation was launched and the programmer arrested. • In a Greek myth, Zeus wanted to have an affair, so he convinced the nymph named Echo to divert his wife’s attention by involving her in conversation. When his wife found out about it, she confiscated Echo’s ability to talk and sentenced her to forever repeat the last words of whatever she heard. A New Flower • In the 1700s a botanist was exploring Mexico, looking for new plants. When he found an interesting new flower, he gathered a sack full of the dried-out seed heads. Suddenly he was seized by bandits who thought his sack must be full of gold. When they opened it and found only a bunch of dead flowers, they were convinced he was an idiot, wandering through the desert with a bunch of dried plants. Because it was considered bad luck to murder the feeble minded, they let him go. • The flower seeds he was collecting were sent to Europe where they were cultivated. Later the flower was examined by another botanist named Johann, who was the director of the Botanic Garden of the University of Göttingen in Germany. He named the new flower after his last name, and they rapidly became a popular annual, cultivated in gardens worldwide. Johann died young, at the age of 32, but the flower spread quickly because they are easy to start from seed. A long-stemmed flower with a single head, they come in many colors, re-seed easily, and attract butterflies. Today it is one of the most popular bedding plants. Z Namesakes • Karl von Zois was an Austrian botanist in the 1700s. He is the namesake of the grass now called zoysia. Zoysia makes great lawns because it grows sideways along the ground instead of up, so it needs less mowing. It tolerates drought, so it needs less watering. • An entomologist who had just discovered a new species of moth was determined to have the final word. He invented a name for the insect that guaranteed it the final spot in every dictionary in the world: Zyzzyx. Answer: Johann Zinn named the zinnia.

FAMOUS CANADIANS MORTIMER ZUCKERMAN • Mortimor Zuckerman was born in Montreal, Quebec, on June 4, 1937. His parents, Esther and Abraham Zuckerman, owned a local neighborhood tobacco and candy store. His grandfather was an orthodox Jewish rabbi. Young Mort suffered a good deal of anti-Semitism as a child. From this humble beginning, however, he grew up to become a real estate tycoon, a media mogul, and one of the world’s richest men. • At the age of 16 he entered McGill University in Montreal, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957, followed by Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 1961. However, he never took the bar exam. He later declared, “I decided law was the exact opposite of sex; even when it was good, it was lousy.” He claims that the most important thing he learned in law school was “not to be afraid of lawyers.” • He transferred to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and then went on to Harvard Law School. He remained at Harvard for nine years as an associate professor before transferring to Yale. Next, he spent seven years at the real estate firm of Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, where he eventually became senior vice president as well as chief financial officer. The company specializes in buying and developing trophy properties. • In 1980 he broke into the world of publishing when he bought the magazine The Atlantic Monthly where he served as chairman for nearly twenty years. When he sold the magazine for $20 million, while also selling the magazine Fast Company for $365 million, he quipped, “I averaged out!” • He often airs his political opinions on the Sunday morning talk show The McLaughlin Group.

• Raised in Idaho, Frank headed to California to seek his fortune. A skilled mechanic, he designed refrigerator units to keep milk from local dairies cold. Then he provided railroads with block ice to keep produce fresh during shipping. By the 1930s, refrigeration technology was expanding, block ice was obsolete, and Frank needed a new line of work. He had all this refrigeration equipment on hand, so he decided to build an ice rink next to his ice plant. With 20,000 square feet of ice and room for 800 skaters, it was a hit. • But Frank dreaded resurfacing the ice. To smooth the ice, a tractor pulling a planer would drive across the ice. The planer scraped the ice; the shavings were swept up; water was sprayed, followed by a squeegee. Frank decided to design a machine to perform this tedious task. It took him ten years to come up with a functional model, which was completed in 1949. When renowned skater Sonja Henie saw it while practicing at his ice rink, she insisted on buying one to travel with her ice show. People everywhere were subsequently introduced to Frank’s invention, and ice rinks all over the country ordered their own. Frank wanted to name his firm the Paramount Engineering Company, but that name was taken, so he named it after his last name instead. By the time he died in 1988, his machines were being used all over the world. What’s it called? Answer: Zamboni • In the early days of the Zamboni, the inability of tires to get adequate traction on the ice was problematic. Frank Zamboni solved the problem by having tire casings re-treated with a mixture of rubber and crushed walnut shells. In the mid-1960s, the invention of steel-studded tires solved the problem for good. • Frank Zamboni also invented the “Grasshopper” (a machine to roll up artificial turf); the “Black Widow” (used to fill in dirt on top of cemetery vaults); the “Astro Zamboni” (designed to vacuum water from Astro-turf); and the “Vault Carrier” (built to lift and carry heavy cement burial vaults).

Here's a recipe that's ready, willing and waiting to be the first bread baked in your new bread machine! 1 1/4 cups unsweetened orange juice Sugar substitute to equal 3/4 cup sugar, suitable for baking 1/2 teaspoon table salt 3 cups bread flour 1/4 cup quick oats 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast 1/2 cup chopped fresh or frozen cranberries 1. In a bread-baking pan, combine orange juice, sugar substitute, salt, flour, oats, dry milk powder and yeast. Follow your bread machine's instructions. Add cranberries when "add ingredient" signal beeps. Continue following your machine instructions. 2. Remove bread and place on a wire rack to cool. Cut into 12 slices. Makes a 1 1/2-pound loaf. Zany Zamboni Facts • Before Zambonis were invented, it took several men an hour to resurface an ice rink. • There are currently about 10,000 Zambonis in use around the world. • During the winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City in 2002, there were 20 Zambonis on hand. • A Zamboni travels an average of three miles (4.8 km) during each hockey game, covering about 2,000 miles (3,218 km) per year. • Road & Track magazine determined that the machine’s top speed was 9.7 mph (15.6 km/ hr) and that the machine would go from 0 to _ mile per hour in 93.5 seconds flat. • In 2001, a Zamboni was driven from the east coast of Canada (St. John’s, Newfoundland) across to the West Coast (Victoria, B.C.). Easy Christmas Stollen

Ricotta cheese adds richness and moisture to this sweet bread. 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 8 tablespoons butter or margarine (1 stick) 1 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup candied lemon peel or coarsely chopped red candied cherries 1/2 cup dark seedless raisins 1/3 cup slivered blanched almonds, toasted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 large egg yolk 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease a large cookie sheet. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or two knives used scissorfashion, cut in 6 tablespoons butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. With spoon, stir in ricotta until mixture is moistened. Stir in candied lemon peel, raisins, almonds, vanilla, grated lemon peel, egg and egg yolk until well-mixed. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; gently knead dough 2 or 3 times to mix. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 10-inch-by-8-inch oval. Fold oval lengthwise almost in half, so that edges do not quite meet. 3. Place stollen on prepared cookie sheet. Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 1 hour. Transfer to wire rack. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and brush over warm stollen. Cool completely. Eat Nuts, Live Longer aFor years, my doctor has been trying to steer me away from peanut butter and toward other nut butters, like almond and cashew, saying they were more nutritious. Recently, I discovered that a major manufacturer has come out with a line of cashew and almond butters that don't have all that oil floating on top. I grabbed one of each and compared them to my usual brand of peanut butter Ð and found no appreciable difference between

the types! Calories, proteins and total carbohydrates all were very similar. And now there's even more reason to stick with what I like, which is peanut butter: A 30-year Harvard study of nearly 120,000 professionals that looked at consumption of nuts in the diet. Here's what it learned: "Increased nut consumption is associated with a reduced risk of major chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes." The more times per week the participants had nuts, the lower their mortality rate. "Those who consumed nuts seven or more times per week had a 20 percent lower death rate." It was the same for peanuts and tree nuts, like pistachio, walnut, almond, hazelnut and cashew. And that isn't all. The findings jibed with other studies done in the U.S., U.K. and the Netherlands.

Granted, the researchers couldn't explain exactly why this is so. Do people who eat nuts exercise more? Do they follow a healthier diet? (It was found that nut consumption caused less weight gain and was associated with smaller waists and less risk of obesity.) Therefore they don't specifically say "eat nuts, live longer." But there is a correlation, no matter how it works. Try putting crushed nuts on your salads, yogurt and cereal, or spreading nut butters on crackers or toast. Or just eat them by the handful. If you had any sense of shame at all you would be totally depressed. ● “Channel your imagination into ever-increasing levels of creativity.” There are several good reasons for you to be consumed by suspicion and paranoia. ● “Walk a mile in a man’s shoes before you criticize him.” That way when you do criticize him he’ll be a mile away and barefoot. ● “Receive criticism with grace and dignity.” Unless it comes from a family member, a friend, an associate, or a stranger. ● “Don’t talk about other people.” Let’s see, I guess that means the only person we can talk about is me! ● “Never look back.” The traffic in front of you might suddenly slow down and you’ll rear-end somebody. ● “Be willing to share your experience and advice with those around you.” It’s so much fun being able to say later on, “I told you so.” ● “Do something that will increase your heart rate and improve your muscle tone.” Take your computer out in the garage and beat it to death with a tire iron. ● “Be willing to express yourself more openly.” Check state and local laws first. ● “If someone hurts you, forgive them immediately.” Meaningful and satisfying retaliation takes great thought and careful preparation. ● “Assume full responsibility for your actions.” Except those caused by others. ● “Be more intuitive.” It might make up for your lack of intelligence and sound judgment.

● “Live each day with integrity.” If you do, does that mean you can live each night with corruption? ● “Celebrate each holiday just like you did when you were a child.” Your credit cards are all charged up, your house payment is late, and your car needs brakes. Then you need all the preservatives you can get. ● “Relax more.” Unless you feel more comfortable tense. ● “Become a better communicator.” Otherwise, just shut up. ● “Get out there and try to change the world for the better.” But don’t you dare mess with the status quo. ● “Lose twenty pounds.” Here’s how: Take a two-week trip to Mexico, drink the water and eat the food. ● “Be sincere.” If you can’t, at least try to fake it. ● “Be yourself.” Unless you’re an idiot. ● “Get all of your temporal affairs in order.” After all, you may live another twenty years. Preserve Your Family History! New book shows you how! “Hey Ron, here’s a copy of your family genealogy,” a close friend and distant relative said to me as he handed me a copy of a professionally prepared 200+ page book of our family tree. A: Wayland Bunnell is an expert and appraiser of sheet music, and he stated that unless you have pieces that are extraordinary, they probably would not be worth appraising. Sheet music to be aware of includes early ragtime, personality sheets from the 1920s and '30s promoting stars such as Al Jolson, Shirley Temple and Judy Garland, and pre1925 Irving Berlin compositions. Q: My dad owned a typewriter repair shop and saved about a dozen older machines that he thought were unique. Once you acquire HSV-2, it stays in your body forever, and may (or may not) cause recurrent disease, which most commonly looks like a clear, fluidfilled blister. These are very infectious, but it is possible to transmit the virus even when there are no symptoms. It is possible that you acquired the condition 30 or more years ago. When no oral conditions are found that produce bad breath, then the most likely cause is mouth bacteria that produce odoriferous, sulfur compounds. Let me repeat what your dentists told you for the sake of others. Brush after every meal, and brush your tongue as far back as you can. You might want to get a tongue scraper for the backmost part of the tongue. That's where the sulfur-producing bacteria live. Keep your mouth moist by drinking water or chewing sugar-free gum. Products containing zinc have been sold since the 1970s and have gotten mixed reviews for their effect on halitosis. Listerine with zinc is one product. Another is SmartMouth.
