TIDBITS® CREEPS SLOWLY ALONG WITH
GLACIERS
by Patricia L. Cook Glaciers form when fallen snow doesn’t melt but compresses over years of buildup into large, sometimes gigantic, thick snow masses. As the snow sits in one place it transforms into ice. ● Ice masses that form glaciers are able to move like very slow rivers. There are smaller ones about the size of football fields but many grow to be over 62 miles long (100 km). Glaciers are found on most continents of the world, even Africa. The majority are found in Antarctica and Greenland. ● The formation of glaciers depends on climatic and geographic conditions. Most occur above the “snow line,” in mountainous areas or at the polar regions. The snow line is an altitude at which more snow accumulates in the winter than will melt in the summer. While the snow line in Antarctica is at sea level, in Africa it is above 16,732 feet (5100 m), Washington State’s snow line occurs at around 5500 feet (1600 m). Because of a lack of snowfall, Siberia is an extremely cold area that has no glaciers. ● Canada has the most glaciers in North America, covering over 77 square miles (200,000 km_). Glaciers cover 29 square miles (75000 km_) in the United States, including Alaska; and only 4.25 square miles (11 km_) in Mexico. turn the page for more!

GLACIERS continued ● Approximately 10% of the land area on earth is covered in glacial ice. That is over 5.8 million square miles (15 million km_)! ● About 75% of the world’s freshwater is stored in glaciers. The ice of Antarctica is over 2.6 miles (4.2 km) thick in some places. ● According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) based in Boulder, Colorado, there are eleven types of glaciers: ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps, ice streams/outlet glaciers, icefields, mountain glaciers, valley glaciers, piedmont glaciers, cirque glaciers, hanging glaciers and tidewater glaciers. ● Ice sheets are masses of glacial land ice that extend more than 20,000 square miles (50,000 km_). There are two ice sheets on the earth today, covering most of Antarctica and Greenland. ● More than 99% of the freshwater ice on earth is contained in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers an area about the size of the United States and Mexico combined. The Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers most of Greenland, is three times the size of Texas. ● When ice from the gigantic ice sheets oozes into the sea or ocean which is cold enough for the ice to remain frozen, ice shelves can form. Ice shelves float over water but are still connected to land. The ice shelves can grow as they gain ice from the ice sheets or shrink if icebergs “calve” off at the edges. (Calving is the term used when icebergs break off.) ● There are some large ice shelves on the northern coast of Canada’s Ellesmere Island. However, most of the ice shelves on earth hug the coast of Antarctica.

Give Nervous Nelly Some Time, Space DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My friend adopted a little mixed terrier that he named "Jessie." She must have come from an abusive situation because she trembles terribly, barks and sometimes pees whenever anyone but my friend tries to interact with her. I always thought I could get along with any dog, but Jessie is terrified of me. What can I do to make friends? -- Casey in Sioux City, Iowa DEAR CASEY: Sometimes it can be extremely difficult to make friends with other people's pets. Temperament and the dog or cat's early environment can play big roles in how they interact with others outside their perceived family unit. Jessie might not have come from an abusive situation; it could be that she wasn't socialized correctly. And if she was just dumped at the shelter (or who knows where else),
she could have been traumatized by being abandoned. It's a sad and tough situation, but it sounds like your friend is giving her great care, and they have bonded. Don't get frustrated if Jessie doesn't take to you immediately. Always give her a friendly "hello" when you come in. If she backs away or gets nervous when you reach out to pat her, pull back calmly. She eventually may come to you to sniff your hand or your ankle -- stay calm and say nice, soothing words. If she sniffs your hand without backing away, try gently running your hand along her jawline to her ear, and scratch her ear gently. Don't try to pat the top of her head, and don't press your face into hers -- many dogs react negatively to these motions. It could be weeks or months before Jessie allows you to pet her, or maybe never. But give her time and space to feel confident and safe enough to let you in as well.

GLACIERS continued ● Ice caps are miniature ice sheets. They cover fewer than 20,000 square miles (50,000 km_). They are found in polar and sub-polar regions that are high in elevation and mostly flat. Iceland has an ice cap, as compared to the much larger ice sheet on Greenland. Ice fields are also similar with flow influenced by underlying ground that is not as flat. They are usually smaller than ice caps. ● Ice streams are like little rivers that flow more rapidly than the glaciers they are surrounded by. The Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets have many ice streams that flow outwardly. ● Mountain and valley glaciers are, as you may expect, named because of their locations. Mountain glaciers develop in high mountain areas and valley glaciers form from ice fields or mountain glaciers that spill into the valleys below them. ● Valley glaciers tend to look like giant tongues when seen from above. They can sometimes reach sea level. ● The largest mountain glaciers are found in the highest mountains of the world: the Himalayas in Asia, the Andes of South America, and the mountains of northern Canada, Alaska and on Antarctica. ● When valley glaciers spill out onto flat plains they spread out into large lobes, forming piedmont glaciers. The Malaspina Glacier in Alaska is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Formed by the spill-out from the Seward Ice Field and the Agassiz Glacier, the Malaspina fills the plain in southeastern Alaska. Since it does not connect to the Gulf of Alaska or any of its bays, it does not qualify as a tidewater glacier. The Malaspina Glacier spreads out over 1931 square miles (5,000 km_) of the coastal plain below the Saint Elias Mountains.

● On Jan. 29, 1845, Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven," which begins "Once upon a midnight dreary," is published in the New York Evening Mirror. Poe's macabre work often portrayed motiveless crimes and intolerable guilt in his characters. ● On Feb. 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. ● On Jan. 30, 1943, the British Royal Air Force begins a bombing campaign in Berlin that coincides with the 10th anniversary of Hitler's accession to power. To make matters worse for the Germans, the following day a massive surrender of German troops occurred at Stalingrad. ● On Jan. 27, 1967, a launch-pad fire during Apollo program tests at Cape Canaveral, Fla., kills astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chafee. An investigation indicated that a faulty electrical wire inside the Apollo 1 command module was the probable cause of the fire. ● On Feb. 1, 1974, University of Washington student Lynda Ann Healy disappears from her apartment and is murdered by serial killer Ted Bundy. In the summer of 1974, Bundy attacked at least seven young women in Washington. By the time he was captured in 1979, Bundy had become America's most infamous serial killer. ● On Jan. 28, 1985, 45 American music artists gather to record "We Are the World," a record that would eventually sell more than 7 million copies and raise some $60 million for African famine relief. The instruction producer Quincy Jones sent to pop stars doing the recording: "Check your egos at the door." ● On Jan. 31, 1990, the Soviet Union's first McDonald's fast-food restaurant opens in Moscow. Throngs of people line up to pay the equivalent of several days' wages for Big Macs, shakes and french fries. Customers were most amazed at the politeness of the workers.

● It was Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran who made the following sage observation: "I have learnt silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers." ● In Japan, black cats are considered to be good luck. ● If you're ever longing for the "good old days," you might want to keep this tidbit in mind: In 19th-century America, one of the most popular cure-all remedies was "snail water," which was made by pounding earthworms and snails together, adding the paste to beer and boiling the whole thing. Those in need of a tonic drank it. ● Sea turtles can breathe through their backsides. ● If you could leap over the St. Louis Arch unassisted, you would have jumping power equivalent to that of a flea.

● If you're planning a trip to Oregon, you might want to stop off in Gold Hill to see the Oregon Vortex, where strange phenomena are said to occur. In the mid-20th century, a scientist and mining engineer named John Litser conducted experiments on the property and came to the conclusion that the site contains a spherical field of force and 15 crisscrossing magnetic fields. Before his death in 1959, he burned his notes, reportedly saying, "The world is not ready for this." Those who tour the attraction today might see balls roll uphill or brooms stand on end. Some people appear to be much shorter and some much taller. There are even those who say visiting the Vortex eases back pain. ● Before he became famous, singer Rod Stewart briefly had a job as a grave digger. GLACIERS continued ● Glaciers that look like bowls high on mountainsides are called Cirque Glaciers. All of the glaciers in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado are cirque glaciers. The Matterhorn in Switzerland is an example of a “horn,” which is formed when the top of a mountain has been surrounded by cirque glaciers. ● “Ice aprons,” or hanging glaciers cling to and as the name implies, hang from, steep mountainsides. These are common in the Alps and often have avalanches from their steep inclines. ● When valley glaciers flow far enough to connect to the sea they are called tidewater glaciers. Many icebergs originate from tidewater glaciers. Hubbard Glacier, which is part of Glacier Bay National Park, is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. The highlight of most cruises to Alaska, the glacier was first mapped in 1895. Icebergs up to 200 feet (61 m) high break off fairly often causing spectacular splashing and crashing and giving tourists quite a show. Glacier Bay has 16 tidewater glaciers. ● Glacier Bay and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska, along with Kluane National Park and Reserve in the Yukon Territory and Tatshenshini-Alsek Park in British Columbia, form a vast ecological area that covers 37452 square miles (97000 km_). The area is mostly untouched except for a historic First Nations presence (Native Canadians). A massive complex of high peaks and glaciers, the area is home to many grizzly bears and caribou as well as the largest non-polar icefield in the world. The entire area was declared a World Heritage Site in 1993.

Born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada on August 16, 1954, James Cameron grew up in Chippawa, a small town near Niagara Falls, Ontario. Through the years he has transformed from a small town Canadian to one of the most widely known filmmakers in the world. ● Cameron’s father was an electrical engineer and his mother an artist. He was encouraged to express himself artistically as well as to challenge himself mentally. He was a science fiction fan early on as a boy. ● As a leader among his friends, Cameron organized adventures including building a catapult that would pitch boulders and even creating a miniature diving vessel that sent mice to the bottom of the Niagara River. ● At the age of fifteen, Cameron watched the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was fascinated! He wanted to learn how Stanley Kubrick, the director, had put together such a thrilling motion picture. He watched the film ten times and was hooked on filmmaking for life. ● Cameron’s father accepted a job in Orange County, California, when he was 17, and his interest in filmmaking started to fill his thoughts constantly. He had been writing science fiction stories and fantasizing about films instead of doing his homework for years; now he was near the movie capital of the world, Hollywood! ● After high school, Cameron became a student at California State University at Fullerton, initially pursuing a degree in physics. He changed his major to English but after a short time, dropped out of college. ● Cameron worked a short time as truck driver pulling over for rest stops to write screenplays. He then went to work as a selftaught designer emphasizing visual effects. ● Cameron is best known today as the Oscar-winning director of Aliens (1986), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). ● In preparing for the movie, Titanic, Cameron spent a lot of time at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. He studied/observed the wreckage in twelve dives to the site. Explaining his feelings, he said, “Working around the wreck for so much time, you get such a strong sense of the profound sadness and injustice of it, and the message of it.” He felt a great responsibility to be historically accurate.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 JAMES CAMERON continued ● Titanic replaced Star Wars as the topgrossing film of all time (at that time, 1997-98) grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. The movie won eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. ● Titanic remained the top-grossing film until 2010, when another Cameron film, Avatar, replaced it. Cameron announced in August, 2013, that he plans to film three sequels to Avatar to be released in December of 2016, 2017 and 2018. ● Cameron has combined his two passions: producing films and underwater exploration. As a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, he and his engineering team spent seven years developing the “Deepsea Challenger,” a unique manned submersible capable of going to the ocean’s greatest depths. In March 2012, he piloted the sub to the “lowest point in the Mariana Trench and the deepest known place on the planet.” (A depth of 35,800 feet, almost seven miles; 10.9 km) After his exploration, the deepest solo dive in history, he shared his story as he traveled with his Deepsea Challenger across the country. He donated the sub to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
TRUMPETER SWANS When speaking of large birds most people think of the ostrich, emu, and “Big Bird” of Sesame Street. Those birds can’t fly, but swans can! ● Three species of swans live on the continent of North America: the trumpeter swan, tundra swan, and the mute swan. The first two are indigenous, but the mute swan is a species that was introduced from Europe. All three types are large white birds.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com ● Trumpeter swans are the largest swans and therefore the largest waterfowl in North America. They are also the heaviest flying birds on the continent. The “bustard” of Europe is the only flying bird anywhere that is heavier than a trumpeter swan. ● Male trumpeter swans can weigh as much as 30 pounds (13 kg), be more than 5 feet (1.5m) from bill to tail and have a wingspan of more than 7 feet (2 m) from tip to tip. ● A normal lifespan for a trumpeter swan is from 15-25 years but they can live to be 29-30 years old. They usually stay with the same mate for life, including migrating together. Sometimes when a nest fails to produce young cygnets mates will separate. The “divorce” rate among these swans is about 6%. ● Trumpeter swans are fairly social and congregate in large groups except during breeding season when they are quite protective of their turf. ● A male swan is called a “cob,” the female a “pen,” and baby chicks are known as “cygnets.” Cygnets are gray when they are born but lose those baby feathers and are completely white by the time they are one year old. ● When a pen lays her eggs, she does so in an unusual way. She will lay one egg every other day until she has a total nest, usually three to eight eggs. She does not start incubation until her “clutch” (group or hatch of eggs) is complete so that all of her cygnets hatch within a 24 hour period. Nests are often built on top of beaver lodges or muskrat houses using stems, leaves, cattails and more. A pen only hatches one clutch of eggs per year and the incubation period is about 34 days.

Q: My parents lived in Chicago during the 1940s, and we were one of the first families in our neighborhood to buy a television set. It was a DuMont, Model RA101-1A console. My mother wants to know if it has any value, since she is thinking of disposing of it. -- Charlotte, Midland, MI A: Most older television sets seem to sell in the $150 to $300 range, but as with most collectibles there are always exceptions. Your DuMont television-radiophonograph combination is one of those exceptions. Manufactured in 1946, it is referenced in "Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide" edited by Kyle Husfloen. According to Husfloen, your set is worth about $1,500. Q: I have a pair of Chelsea figurines and have been offered $600 for both. They are in perfect condition, and since I am close to retirement would like to sell the pieces. What is your advice? -- Isabel, Manchester, N.H. A: The Chelsea Porcelain Company was established during the mid-1700s in England and was known primarily for its production of intricate figurines. My advice is to contact a certified appraiser in your area for his or her expert opinion. The cost would be nominal, and an expert could answer your question about current values. Recently, a woman from Delaware contacted me through this column about "several old dolls." I gave her the same advice, to hire the services of an appraiser. She had been offered $500 for her four dolls. She had them appraised and was astonished to discover they were worth a total of $6,000. Her appraisal cost her about $50 and was, according to her, one of the best investments she ever made. Q: Please give me an idea of what a couple of "Raikes Bears" are worth. They are a pair, a girl and a boy, dressed and in new condition. They are approximately 25 years old. -- Lucy, Los Ranchos, N.M. A I am not sure which bears you have. I did find "April and Johnnie Bear" manufactured in 1993 on eBay, and this might be like or similar to the ones you have. The set on eBay were being offered for $28.

The population of resident trumpeter swans does not migrate but stays in the tri-state region of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. ● These interesting swans actually go through a flightless period every year when they molt (or lose) all of their feathers. Typically occurring in July and August, they are not able to fly for 1-2 months. ● Not surprising, trumpeter swans were so-named because of their trumpet-like call. Deep and loud they can be heard from quite a distance. The most similar bird to the trumpeter is the tundra swan. They are most easily distinguished because of their sounds. Tundra swans sound more like geese, with a quavering high-pitched call. ● It is easy to confuse geese, ducks and swans. Generally, swans are the largest with the longest necks. Geese have longer necks than ducks; ducks are almost always the smallest of the three types of waterfowl.

The U.S. Code is specific about what constitutes military sexual trauma (MST). It covers physical assault of a sexual nature, battery of a sexual nature or sexual harassment. The harassment can be verbal or physical. Those who experience it can be either male or female. The number of reported cases has risen dramatically, and the powers-that-be say it's because more incidents are being reported. Or could it be that the actual number of assaults has gone up? The answer remains to be seen. The bottom line is this: If you were subjected to sexual assault while on active duty, get help. You owe it to yourself, and whether or not you have another claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs, your treatment and services will be free. Left unaddressed, the past assault can result in future mental-health issues, including PTSD. Go online to www.mentalhealth.va.gov/msthome. asp and click on VA Programs & Services tab. You'll find information on outpatient care, inpatient care and screening. Look also for the link to benefits related to military sexual trauma. If you didn't report the assault at the time and wonder how you'll prove it, get treatment and file anyway. The VA has learned how to spot the "markers" for assault. Maybe you put in for a transfer, or maybe you sought tests for sexually transmitted diseases. That's evidence. Maybe you talked to the chaplain or a friend. Even if your only sign is panic attacks that appeared for no apparent reason, that's still a marker that the VA will pay attention to. Every regional office has MST specialists. Women Veterans Coordinators are available to help file claims as well. To find your regional office, call 1-800-8271000. If you know someone who experienced military sexual assault, give him or her this information.

Who Are the Lonely? More than one out of three adults 45 and older reported they were chronically lonely, according to a survey done by the AARP in 2010. The definition given for “chronically lonely” makes the report even sadder; chronically lonely means they have been lonely for a long time. This loneliness persists in a Facebook world of a few authentic and an excess of fantasy friendships. In May, 2013 Facebook had over 1.19 billion active users worldwide with 4.5 billion “likes” generated daily with 78 million people logging on to it every day sharing 4.5 billion pieces of content, yet one out of three are still lonely. Who are the lonely? Are you one of them? Outsiders: The stranger, foreigner, outcast, and the recluse are lonely. Anyone whose parents moved them from one state to another in the 7th grade knows about outsider loneliness. The elderly: This ever-growing demographic is becoming increasingly lonely due to fractured families, isolated living conditions, lack of mobility and decreasing health. If you have visited an elder-care facility lately you know this is true. The less educated: The better educated are not as lonely as the less educated; a good reason to make sure your children get a good education. The unemployed: They feel disconnected and useless as they waste their days watching TV and wander streets

searching for meaning and purpose in life. Their despair intensifies with each employment application rejection and successive unemployment check. Women are lonelier than men: I thought women had superior social skills, therefore would not be lonelier than men. But here’s an interesting twist to that fact, unmarried men are lonelier than unmarried women. African Americans: They are lonelier than whites though I couldn’t find evidence as to why. Retired people are lonelier than the employed: Work is good for the soul and for abating loneliness; a good reason to NOT retire. Just because you’re not on the list does not mean you don’t feel lonely from time-to-time. You don’t have to live alone in a high-rise apartment, be isolated on a deserted island, or have all forms of communications cut off to be lonely. You can be lonely in the midst of a throng, at the top of your profession, and lonely even as you receive voluble accolades from a fawning audience. Because loneliness persists in our crowded and busy world, it will take several weeks of columns to describe the issues, discuss the implications and suggest some cures for loneliness, so check back often. As we walk through this vital series, please feel free to write me about your loneliness, share your insights or ask questions and through it we will grow together. Email me at Dr.Ross@ RonRossToday.com. You can read more about loneliness at www.RonRossToday.com.

Trees Offer Surprising Year-Round Insulation Q: An acquaintance told me recently that I could plant a tree on the west side of my house to keep my summer cooling bills down. Well, I live in a colder northern state, and it just doesn't make sense to plant a tree that would block the sun in the winter. My friend disagreed. What's your recommendation? -- Susie in Madison, Wis. A: The great thing about trees is that they have the ability to both keep your house cool in summer and warmer in winter. In Minnesota, a state study found that strategi-

cally placed shade trees can reduce air-conditioning bills by nearly 25 percent, and a windbreak can reduce annual fuel bills by up to 20 percent. How does it work? It all depends on where you place the trees. In the northern hemisphere, winter winds generally blow in from the north or northwest. (In the Northeast, we also tend to get those wonderful winter nor'easters, but that's another story.) Those cold winds can make it harder to heat your home as they drive in through vents or leaky window- and door frames. Plant a couple of trees on the side of your house from which these prevailing winter winds blow (the northwest side or corner, most likely), and they'll act as a windbreak. Even deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the winter can provide adequate protection. To get the best protection from winds while allowing more winter sunlight to reach your home, choose trees

that will grow higher than your home's roof eaves, with sturdy trunks and good branching. Deciduous trees will lose their leaves in winter so that the sunlight can filter in, while perennials (like pines or firs) offer a green view year-round. You might even want to mix these two types of trees. HOME TIP: Plant protective trees one to two tree lengths (based on the average height to which the saplings eventually will grow) from the house, but no farther. Now here's a "novel" way to increase our brain function. It doesn't involve getting more exercise or eating certain foods. It doesn't include doing puzzles. We only need to grab a book and start flipping pages. Emory University did a study that showed how there are "quantifiable changes" in brain activity when participants read a book. Granted it was a bit more regimented than just grabbing your favorite author's latest bestseller. In the study, participants were given a baseline brain scan each day for a few days. Then they were given the thriller "Pompeii" by Robert Harris with instructions to read 30 pages a night. Each morning they were given another brain scan. After the book was finished (about nine days), they were given more scans to see how the brain reacted. Researchers were able to track which portions of the book the participants were reading and correlate them to the brain scan images. Here's what they learned: During reading, and for days afterward, there were significant activity increases in the parts of the brain associated with story comprehension, as well as processing language. According to the study, the reading has to be fiction to get these brain connectivity changes, something with a narrative that describes events unfolding, a story we can identify with. Here's my thinking: While researchers don't know yet how long these brain changes last after reading a novel, it's at least five days. Perhaps we should spend some time in 2014 re-reading the novels that had an impact on us, as well as new narrative fiction and a few of the old classics. The reference librarian is sure to be a good source for book suggestions.

The Role of Sugar in Sugar Diabetes
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He is a competitive distance runner. He loves Kool-Aid and calculates that in a year he drinks 150 pounds of sugar in KoolAid alone. A friend told him if he continues this habit, he might develop diabetes. Can a skinny, athletic person develop diabetes from consuming sugar? -S.B. ANSWER: Although "sugar" is half the name of sugar diabetes, sugar doesn't cause diabetes. It's a popular belief that it does, but it doesn't. People with diabetes are careful to watch their sugar intake, and they watch their total carbohydrate intake, but diabetics don't have to eliminate sugar completely from their lives. Careful monitoring of sugar and carbohydrate intake is essential for their control of blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes, the kind that requires insulin for control, often has its onset in younger years. It's due to a destruction of the insulin-making cells of the pancreas. The destruction is believed to be the work of the immune system. Sugar has nothing to do with it. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5 percent to 10 percent of all diabetes cases. Type 2 diabetes, the much more common kind, comes about from a decline in insulin production along with a decline in the effectiveness of insulin. Ninety percent of Type 2 diabetics are overweight, and weight loss helps them control their blood sugar. Physical inactivity also contributes to Type 2 diabetes. So do genes. Again, it's not the sugar intake that produces this common type of diabetes. But monitoring the intake of sugar is important for control of this variety of diabetes. The booklet on diabetes presents this illness and its
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think I may have the illness where a person pulls out clumps of hair. I'm not sure of the name. I find I do this after I have caffeine. I have been off caffeine for 25 years, and I do not pull my hair out. I thought this might be helpful to others. -- K.H. ANSWER: The name of the condition is trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-knee-uh). Between 4 million and 11 million Americans have it. It's called an impulse disorder. I hadn't heard about a caffeine connection. If this holds true for others, they will deeply appreciate your advice.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You recently wrote that Excedrin with caffeine enhances pain relief. I believe that often the cause of headaches is withdrawal from caffeine. Another inference of this fact is to wean oneself from caffeine when trying to kick the habit. -- B.B. ANSWER: You're right. One of the withdrawal symptoms from going cold turkey off somewhat-heavy caffeine consumption is headache, particularly migraine headache. I'm right. Caffeine is a mild painkiller that increases the painkilling capacities of other analgesics when incorporated into the same tablet as those analgesics.
