TIDBITS® KEEPS YOU INFORMED ON COSMETIC COMPANIES
Kelsey M. Henry D.C.
Volume 6, Issue 46
by Kathy Wolfe The average woman spends about $150 a year on beauty products. This week, Tidbits chases down the facts on several large cosmetics firms. • Maksymilian Faktorowicz spent his first 32 years in Russia as a cosmetician and wigmaker. In 1904, Faktorowicz and his family immigrated to the United States and were processed at the Ellis Island immigration station, where officials gave him the Americanized name Max Factor. His first stop was the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where he set up shop selling his rouges and creams. Desiring to work in the movie industry, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Max created a make-up called Flexible Greasepaint for movie actors that would not crack or cake. Soon he was working with Hollywood’s film stars, including Ava Gardner, Jean Harlow, and Marlene Dietrich. In 1916, he started selling his eye shadow and eyebrow pencils to the general public. In 1920, he unveiled a wide range or items dubbed Society Make-up, asserting that every woman could “look like a movie star” with his products. Max Factor himself coined the term “make-up.” He invented lip pomade (later called lip gloss) to produce a glossy look for actresses on film. His company was the first to create mascara applied with a wand in a tube, rather than the old cake and brush method. turn the page for more!

COSMETICS COMPANIES (continued): • Florence Nightingale Graham’s company is one of the oldest names in the beauty industry. Born in Canada in 1884, Florence was part of a large farming family that always struggled financially. While studying nursing, she became interested in lotions that treated burns. After a move to New York in 1908, she took a job as a beautician’s assistant, and two years later started her own salon with a partner on Fifth Avenue. The salon was named Elizabeth Arden, and Florence began using that as her own name. By 1914, Elizabeth had dissolved the partnership, and had hired a team of chemists to create the first items in her line of beauty products -- face cream and lotion. She added eye makeup shortly afterward, and was the first to produce travel-size products in 1917. In 1915, Elizabeth Arden products were being sold internationally, and she opened a salon in Paris in 1922. The salons added makeovers and high-end spas to their list of amenities. In the midst of the Great Depression, Arden was bringing in upwards of $4 million a year. When Elizabeth Arden died in 1966, she had 100 salons around the world and a line of more than 300 cosmetic products. The company was sold to the Eli Lilly Corporation in 1971 for $38 million, and today’s estimated value is more than $1.3 billion. • Oil of Olay got its start in South Africa, created by chemist Graham Wulff in 1952. The name was a spin on the word “lanolin,” one of Olay’s key ingredients. It started out as a thick pink liquid rather than a cream and was dubbed “beauty fluid,” packaged in a heavy glass bottle. Now owned by Procter & Gamble, it’s estimated that an Olay product is sold every two minutes.

Leader of the Pack
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three dogs -- two Schnauzers, male and female, and a poodle, male. My female Schnauzer, “Chloe,” plays great with the other two, but when the time comes for them to relax, she goes crazy licking their ears and eyes. It doesn’t seem to bother the two males, but the continuous licking sounds really bother me. Is this just a female mommy-thing or is she obsessed? All three dogs have been fixed. -- Jackie M. in Denver DEAR JACKIE: Chloe’s behavior sounds more like a compulsion than a simple “mommy” or nurturing thing. It also seems to be a way of signaling dominance over the two males. Whether it bothers the other dogs or not, it bothers you, and you can work to stop it. Recognizing pack dominance is important for dog owners regardless of how many dogs they
have. Chloe may be the dominant dog of the trio, but you are the dominant member of the pack. Start by giving the dogs a refresher course in basic commands: sit, down and stay being the most important for this scenario. Dogs that quickly obey basic commands are often easier to train out of other habits. When the dogs have been placed in a “down” position and told to “stay,” keep an eye on Chloe. If she starts licking the others, repeat the “stay” command; if she continues the behavior, separate her from the others and practice the “down-stay” commands for a few minutes. Other methods are available for curbing compulsive behavior, but daily training in basic commands is important in establishing a base to work from. If training doesn’t help, consult your veterinarian to rule out any health issues with the dogs and to get advice on Chloe’s behavior. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. The carved-leaf crest, scrolled arms, castors and tufted upholstery are seen on mid-Victorian furniture. This sofa was attributed to H.B Mudge Furniture Co. in Ohio, an important furniture company working in the 1880s.
Victorian Furniture
--Many authors define American Victorian furniture in terms of one of the many design types used from 1840 to 1900, but all of them are Victorian. Federal furniture, inspired by the French Empire style, was going out of favor and the heavy square look with straight backs, hard seats, black wood and fabrics, and perhaps gold trim was being replaced by ornate carvings possible because of the jigsaw. Variations in designs continued until Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts appeared during the 20th century. There was the Gothic Revival style, inspired by church chairs and stained-glass windows; Rococo Revival featuring scrolls, flowers, leaves and shapes possible because of the first laminated wood; and the even larger and fancier Renaissance Revival. There even was a Greco-Egyptian Revival with sphinx heads, obelisks and hieroglyphics. By 1900, the Eastlake period based on simpler designs used by Midwestern furniture factories ended the Victorian era. Most expensive today are Renaissance Revival pieces by famous makers like John Henry Belter, Herter Brothers and Alexander Roux, all from New York. But less-famous furniture made in other cities sells today for much lower prices. H.B. Mudge Furniture Co. of Cincinnati made a sofa with scroll arms and tufted upholstery that sold for only $492 at a Cowan’s auction in Ohio. There are other makers, like Mitchell & Rammelsberg or Berkey & Gay, which made attractive Victorian pieces that sell for less than today’s reproductions.

COSMETICS COMPANIES (continued): • Founded in Maryland in 1961 by the Noxzema Chemical Company, Cover Girl’s first product line was called Clean Makeup. The brand, which at first offered just six products, was advertised as a “medicated face makeup,” because it contained camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus. In 1963, 16-year-old model Jennifer O’Neill was their first spokeswoman, appearing in the brand’s magazine and TV advertising. Famous early Cover Girl models include Cybill Shepherd, Cheryl Tiegs, and Christie Brinkley. Brinkley’s contract with Cover Girl is the longest ever of any model in history. Currently owned by Procter & Gamble, Cover Girl’s Clean Makeup line is still on shelves today and remains one of the world’s best-selling foundations after 56 years. • An accident in 1915 led to the formation of one of the world’s largest cosmetic companies. A kitchen stove fire in the Chicago home of the Williams family burned daughter Maybel’s eyelashes and eyebrows. She mixed a concoction of petroleum jelly, coal dust, and ash from a burnt cork and applied it to her lashes and brows. Her brother Tom watched the process with interest, and envisioned an idea that would change the world of women’s beauty. Within two years, he had a new company, Maybelline, a name created from combining his sister’s name with the Vaseline she used to create her eyelash color. Maybell Laboratories released their first product that year, Maybelline Cake Mascara. The company introduced Ultra Lash in the 1960s, and in 1971, their famous Great Lash mascara was launched. The Williams family sold the company in 1967, and in 1996, it was acquired by L’Oreal. A package of Great Lash mascara is sold every 1.7 seconds somewhere in the world.

Q: Is there an easy way to date Coca-Cola trays? I know there are a lot of copies. A: Original trays are decorated with women dressed in the clothing of the day. Dresses, hats and hairdos are a good clue. The trays also often picture celebrities of the day. The shape of the tin tray has changed. The first ones, from 1897 to 1910 were round. Next came ovals from 1910 to 1921. The trays were always rectangular after that. Reproductions were first made during the 1970s. *** Q: I’d like to know the value of a crocheted bedspread my great-grandmother made about 1910. It is made of squares with a rose in the center of each square. I realize that everyone has handmade items that are only worth sentimental value, but this spread is in perfect condition and is exceptionally beautiful. What do you think it’s worth? A: You can sell the bedspread to a dealer or online. Size, condition and design will affect price. An old double-bed size spread, with old thread and old design, might sell for less than $100. *** TIP: Wash silver before you clean it with polish. The washing will remove gritty dust particles that will scratch the silver. Keep up with changes in the collectibles world. In an attempt to sell more books, he offered his female customers free perfume samples as a “door opener,” and soon discovered that the women were more interested in the perfume than they were in the books. McConnell ditched the book business and started up a perfume company in Manhattan, calling it the California Perfume Company, mixing the first fragrances himself in his tiny office. Having recognized women’s love of the products, McConnell recruited his customers as sales representatives. Mrs. P.F.E. Albee developed the company’s direct-marketing system, selling perfumes door-to-door, the world’s first Avon lady – although the company wouldn’t be called Avon for 45 more years. The first product was the Little Dot Perfume set, but by the end of the first year, nearly 20 different perfumes were offered, and by 1902, a full range of cosmetics had been added. Their first catalog was distributed in 1896, an index of products with no illustrations. The first full-color catalog came along in 1905. In 1897, McConnell built his first factory in Suffem, New York, next to the railroad tracks for easy shipping. By 1899, there were 5,000 sales representatives for his company. Sales for 1920 reached $1 million. • The California Perfume Company was renamed Avon in the 1930s in honor of William Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-onAvon. The first of their TV commercials with the famous line “Ding Dong! Avon calling” aired in 1954. • David McConnell’s free perfume samples blossomed into a company that now has 6.4 million representatives. Brazil, the company’s largest market has more than 900,000 Avon ladies, more than the number of its army and navy.

UNUSUAL PLANTS: WATER LILIES • The scientific name for the water lily family is Nymphaeaceae, a family that consists of about 70 different species. • The large leaves, known as pads, of the water lily float on the surface of the water, but are in fact anchored to the soil at the bottom of the pond by a long stem. The plant doesn’t need to expend much energy producing a sturdy stem, because the water supports the plant and keeps it buoyant. The lilies grow completely within water, with the root system gathering its nutrients from the soil below. They spread in proportion to the size of the area where they are placed. Water lilies live only in still fresh water, usually in small ponds or around the edges of lakes. • There are three groups of water lilies – hardy, night-blooming tropical, and day-blooming tropical. In areas that are frost-free, hardy varieties can be left outside all year round. But in colder areas, the tropical must be brought inside for the winter. Hardies will survive the winter as long as the underground stem does not freeze. • Hardy varieties bloom only in the daylight and gently close at night. They have simpler flowers, usually white and yellow, that last only about three to five days. The tropical blooms at any time, day or night, depending on the variety, and remains open until the blossoms fade. Its pads are much larger, as are the blooms, with many more petals, and more likely to produce multiple flowers than hardies. The colors are much more intense in shades of pink, red, purple, blue, and orange, and are much more fragrant. Their blooming season also lasts several weeks longer than that of the hardy varieties.

For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 WATER LILIES (continued): • Blossoms might be star-shaped, cup-shaped, pointed, or ruffly. The leaves vary from smooth to jagged, rounded or pointed. • The Victoria amazonica, found in the Amazon river basin of South America, is the world’s largest water lily, producing circular leaves over 8 feet (3 m) across and strong enough to support an evenly-distributed load of 100 lbs. (45 kg). Its stalk reaches up to 25 feet (8 m) down to the water’s bottom. The huge spectacular flowers, nearly 16 inches (40 cm) across, only last 48 hours and can only be seen at night. The first night, the flowers are white, changing to pink on the second night. • Water lilies are not only beautiful, they provide shade and protection for fish, keeping the water temperature down during hot summer months. They can, however, become invasive and difficult to eradicate. Cutting off the top growth will help control their spread. • Water lilies can be planted in man-made ponds with a liner by planting in pots and sinking the pots down into the water. A dense, claylike pot works best for this purpose. • Painter Claude Monet, the father of French Impressionism, created an enormous garden and several lily ponds at his Giverny, France home that provided the subject of his famous series of artwork called Water Lilies. Over the course of 30 years, Monet produced more than 250 paintings of his beloved pond. One of the paintings sold for $80.3 million at a Christie’s auction in 2008.

Josephine Esther Mentzer’s parents had emigrated from Hungary to the U.S, where they opened a hardware store in Queens. The couple and their nine children lived above the store. Although she worked at the hardware store and a department store, Esther, or Estee, as she was called by her family, was more interested in the business run by her uncle, a chemist, specializing in skin products that he sold to pharmacists. Estee began making her own creams and as a teenager began selling her creations to local hair salons. She promoted them as “jars of hope,” handing out free samples as incentives. At age 22, she married Joseph Lauter, a name that was later changed to Lauder. Since Estee Lauder had no desire to open her own stores, her products were sold and demonstrated door-to-door for many years. There were only four products at that time, being made in a former restaurant’s kitchen. In 1948, she obtained counter space at Saks Fifth Avenue, who ordered $800 worth of products, which were sold in two days. This opened the door to other upscale department stores, such as Neiman Marcus. In 1960, the company expanded to London’s Harrods store. In 1968, Estee Lauder branched out, opening Clinique Laboratories, offering the first dermatologist-guided, allergy-tested, fragrance-free cosmetic line. Estee Lauder passed away in 2004 at the age of 95. In 2016, her companies had net sales of $11.26 billion. • In 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression, two brothers Charles and Joseph Revson teamed up with chemist Charles Lachman to create colored nail enamel as we know it. They marketed the polish under the name of Revlon, changing to “V” to an “L” for Lachman. They labeled the enamels with clever names like Cherries in the Snow, Fatal Apple, and Kissing Pink.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com MORE BEAUTY BRANDS (continued): • Revlon’s first advertisement was in 1935 in The New Yorker, an expense that set them back $335, with that one ad eating up their entire annual advertising budget. Their fifth year sales were more than 40 times that of the first year. Revlon ads for the first 10 years were hand-drawn in black and white, but beginning in 1945, fullcolor photo ads promoted their products. Until 1940, Revlon stuck with manicure products, but in 1940, they expanded to lipstick. During World War II, they manufactured first-aid kits and hand grenades for the war effort. • In 1907, 26-year-old French chemist Eugene Schueller created a hair dye formula from a blend of harmless compounds, calling it Oreal. Two years later, he established the French Harmless Hair Dye Company, an enterprise that would later become known as L’Oreal. Manufacturing his own products in his kitchen, he sold them to Parisian hairdressers. Schueller was so successful that by the following year he had not only hired sales reps to sell Oreal throughout France, he had set up a hair coloring school in Paris. Within three years, he had expanded his operation into Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. More groundbreaking inventions followed, including hair-lightening products to create golden tints, bleaching powders for blonde hair, the first modern shampoo, and a skin-protection oil. Schueller also introduced the first monthly women’s health and beauty magazine. In 1939, his company officially became known as L’Oreal. • In 2006, L’Oreal opened The Hairdressing Academy in Paris, the world’s largest training center. • Schueller’s daughter Liliane, now in her 90s, is the wealthiest woman in the world, with an estimated net worth of around $44 billion.

By Keith Roach, M. D,
Can Zinc Help Ward Off Colds? DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had a low resistance to germs and have caught colds every two to three months. I take adequate vitamins and B-12 shots. Approximately eight months ago, I started taking 50 mg zinc once a day. I feel fine and have not caught a cold since taking zinc. A local pharmacist advised that zinc contains too much metal to take on a regular basis and to take it only at the onset of a cold. I feel fine now and would like to continue taking zinc. What do you advise? -- L.F. ANSWER: It is unusual to see problems from excess zinc, but it can happen. Zinc and copper both are absorbed by the same enzyme, so with too much zinc, you can’t properly absorb copper. A student of mine published a report of someone who took MUCH more zinc than you are taking (the adequate intake per the Institute of Medicine is 11 mg, and you are taking about five times that amount; this person was taking 30 times the recommended amount), who had extraordinarily low copper levels and dangerously low white blood-cell counts. The upper limit for safe zinc intake is 40 mg, and I would definitely recommend against taking more than that every day. I would think taking 25 mg daily would be safe. However, it’s not clear that zinc prevents colds, at least when studied in large groups of people. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with a skin condition called dermatitis herpetiformis 35 years ago. He was prescribed dapsone and has been taking it ever since. We have moved to Florida, and none of the doctors here know anything about dapsone. He is unable to get a prescription. Right now, he is miserable with a horrible skin rash with blisters, and he itches constantly. He is careful with his diet (he is lactose intolerant), but otherwise can find no answers. Dapsone is the only thing that helps him. Please help. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Dermatitis herpetiformis is an uncommon skin disease seen more often in people with ancestry from northern Europe. In the vast majority of cases, it is linked to gluten sensitivity (celiac disease). A gluten-free diet is one mainstay of treatment, and the other is dapsone. Dapsone is a powerful medication with many potential side effects that must be used by someone familiar with it who must be monitored carefully with periodic exams and blood tests. It causes hemolysis (breakdown of blood cells) to a small extent in most people; however, in people with a condition called G-6PD deficiency, the hemolysis can be fatal. If your husband hadn’t been taking it safely before, he would be tested for this common enzyme deficiency before being prescribed dapsone. Most people with dermatitis herpetiformis who stick to their gluten-free diet carefully are able to stop dapsone eventually. Your husband needs a very experienced dermatologist and advice on a gluten-free diet. Two places to start are www.celiac.org and www.gluten.net. A dietician can be very useful as well. Fortunately, there are many gluten-free options available now. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * It was 20th-century American author and social critic James Baldwin who made the following sage observation: “Ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.” * Have you ever wanted to test yourself against international competitors, but you’re not an athlete? If so, you might want to check out the WorldSkills Competition. Every two years, competitors from 75 WorldSkills member countries compete to find out who is the best at a variety of skilled trades, ranging from bricklaying, plumbing and cabinetmaking to auto body repair, die-making and electronics. Personal services contests include hairdressing and restaurant service, while florists and jewelry-makers compete in the creative arts and fashion category. IT folks can get in on the action, too, with awards for skills such as web design, information network cabling and IT software solutions for business. * One of every six Supreme Court justices who have served in the history of the United States have been graduates of Harvard Law School. * The 1926 Warner Brothers film “Don Juan” may hold the record for the most kissing in any movie. It’s been calculated that the star, John Barrymore, kisses a woman an average of every 53 seconds throughout the film. * Those who study such things say than in ancient Maya culture, only men in the upper classes were permitted to grow beards. * If you’re looking for an American-made car, your best bet is ... Tesla? Yep. Tesla is the only car manufacturer that is 100 percent Americanmade. Other auto manufacturers assemble their vehicles in the United States, but Tesla is the only one that also uses American-made parts in their cars. *** Thought for the Day: “Don’t be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value.” -- Arthur Miller (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Are You Dreading the Holidays? Are you already dreading the holidays? If you are, you’re not alone. Many seniors feel the pressures of lack of money at this time of year, or the even bigger burden of loneliness because family has moved away and friends have passed away. While there are no fixes for these, there are some steps you can take to feel better and maybe enjoy the holidays. * Grab the newspaper, a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list of all the free events in your area and plan to attend at least some of them. * Call the volunteer services at the hospital and sign up to work certain holidays so that employees can take a day off. You could man the front desk, push the magazine and book cart or deliver packages to patients. * Check senior centers to see what events they might be hosting. Ask if they’re joining with the community children’s fund and will be wrapping presents. If they’re planning a bus trip to a big city to see plays or do sightseeing, chances are the costs will be affordable at group pricing. * Will any of the local churches be hosting free holiday dinners? Consider going. Call to ask if they need help setting up beforehand. * Check out a tall stack of books from the library for your at-home days. You might discover a new author you like. While you’re at the library, offer to sign up for book shelving if others aren’t available on their regular schedule. While nothing can take the place of having family and friends with you over the holidays, alternating busy days with relaxing ones at home can help make the holidays less stressful. The original CHOICE Act gave veterans the option of getting medical care closer to home, outside of a VA facility, if they lived more than 40 miles from one or couldn’t get an appointment for 30 days. That was a good step, except when it came to determining just what “40 miles” meant. Was it as the crow flies, or was it by long and winding road? And yes, it sounded great to be able to access care mere miles from one’s home ... except the contact number to make appointments was involved in a scam (a difference between an 800 and an 866 phone number). And yes, the whole thing sounded fine, except that care providers were bailing due to lack of payment. This new CARE Act proposes to simplify eligibility requirements, implement new care coordination support, and streamline clinical and admin processes. Said VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin, “We want veterans to work with their VA physicians to make informed decisions that are best for their clinical needs, whether in the VA or in the community.” Which means what? That the third-party vendor will no longer need to approve your request to go outside the system? VA officials are, however, proposing to change the 40-mile, 30-day difficulty rule that has kept many veterans from getting care. There are other items as well: tools to strengthen VA care, partner with other federal agencies and “business process enhancements to improve financial management.” I suspect this last one means “paying bills on time so community-care providers won’t quit or send the bill to the veteran.” To find out how quickly your nearest facility can see you, go online to www.accesstocare.va.gov.
