It helps dry acne and eases bruising. TOWNSEND R22 • Francis Townsend was a doctor living in Ocean City, Maryland in 1914. He was disturbed by how often tourists visiting his town would become sunburned on the beach, so he mixed up a healing salve containing camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus to help soothe their burned skin. He called it “Townsend R22.” He knew there was a market for the product beyond Ocean City, so he turned the formula over to Baltimore pharmacist George Bunting, who re-named the product “Dr. Bunting’s Sunburn Remedy” and packaged it in cobaltblue glass jars. It was the first real alternative to the greasy medicated creams common at the time. • Women used it as a facial cleanser and a makeup remover. Still, George struggled to make a profit during the first few years of business, and did all of the work himself. He advertised relentlessly, especially on the radio, and by 1925 he was selling nearly a million jars annually. During World War II, soldiers received the product to help ease tired, overworked feet and soothe dry, chapped, or irritated skin, and after the war, they introduced their wives to the product. • George branched out and offered new products including shaving creams and medicated tissues. He changed the name of the product when a customer approached him and declared, “Your cream knocked my eczema!” The product is still a favorite face cream today. What’s it called? Answer: Noxzema, short for “no eczema.”

Do Indoor Cats Need All Those Shots?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our cat’s paws never touch the ground outside. “Dale” is an indoor cat, through and through. He doesn’t even try to go outdoors, although he does like to watch the world go by from his perch in the front-room window. With that in mind, why does he have to get all of those vaccinations? Most are to protect him from diseases acquired from other cats, like FIV. He’s never going to see another cat, so why should I protect him from a disease he likely won’t get? -- BudgetMinded Papa in Chicago DEAR PAPA: Vaccinating your cat against “improbable” diseases, ones that he seems unlikely to be exposed to, may seem like a waste of money. However, vaccines protect against the possibility of the improbable actually happening. Under normal circumstances, Dale may never be at risk of contracting feline immunodeficiency
virus (FIV), rabies, feline leukemia or other illnesses. But we can’t see the future, and things don’t always stay normal. Let’s say that you and Dale move to a new home. There’s a chance that during the move, Dale could escape from his carrier, get confused or lost and be stuck outdoors for a few days until you find him. Or, perhaps a natural disaster occurs where you and Dale have to evacuate, and he must be housed temporarily around other pets. Having all of his required and recommended shots will help keep Dale healthy in situations like this. If cost is a concern, look for lower-cost vaccination events, often called shot clinics, where you can get Dale’s shots up to date for significantly less than the veterinarian may charge. People washed their hair with bar soap, which was harsh, or they used whatever they had on hand, including cornmeal, oils, eggs, lemon juice, or vinegar. Indoor plumbing was still a new invention. John was convinced his balding was due to the poor quality of soaps available. He was determined to find a shampoo that would save his hair. • So he went to college and got a degree in chemistry, and then spent the next ten years experimenting. He discovered that the problem with the soaps people used on their hair was that the pH balance was wrong. By 1930 he introduced pH-balanced shampoos formulated for both oily and dry hair, naming the product after himself. It was America’s very first shampoo. • When customers failed to flock to his product, John hired an artist to create beautiful fullcolor illustrations of ordinary women with extraordinarily shiny hair, placing the ads in large magazines. It worked. Alas, the shampoo did not keep John’s hair from falling out, but he became a very rich bald man. • In recent times, commercials for John’s shampoo launched the career of several famous models, including Brooke Shields, Kim Basinger, Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, and Cybill Shepherd. Natural rock crystals hang from this large chandelier designed by Coco Chanel. It is a form used in the 20th-century Chanel apartment. This example sold for $37,500.
Coco Chanel Chandelier Coco Chanel (1883-1971) is a well-known French fashion designer who changed the look of women’s clothes and jewelry, and created the famous perfume Chanel No. 5 during the 20th century. But few know she also designed some chandeliers and other furnishings for her apartment and for customers. A rolled-arm sofa and a rock-crystal chandelier probably are her best-known pieces. She included animal figures and mirrors in abundance. Colors like black, gold, brown, honey, beige and cinnabar were backgrounds for Coromandel folding screens and antique furniture. A famous Coco Chanel-designed gilt-metal and rock-crystal chandelier sold at New Orleans Auctions in 2016. It was designed by Coco with Robert Goossens, a Parisian jeweler. The frame has interlocking hearts and ovals with large rockcrystal chunks hanging below. Metal leaves covered the 12 light sockets. The impressive 40-inch-high and 31-inch-diameter chandelier sold for $37,500. *** Q: In the 1930-1950 period, would Minton dinnerware normally be found in middle-class or upper-middle-class homes? • As a youth, Andrew earned a living as a lumberjack and woodworker. He knew how chapped, dry, and cracked a pair of hardworking hands could become. By the time he was 30, he had quite a large amount of money saved up, and he was also tired of being a lumberjack, so he invested his money in a soap-making firm run by Charles Geilfus in Cincinnati. They became partners in 1882, naming the firm the Andrews Soap Company. • They started out with a single soap-making vat which they took turns tending, but the company grew quickly. A coconut oil soap they developed was particularly effective in hard water. Because hard water was so prevalent, the soap became very popular and their fortunes grew. They bought more vats, and by 1901 they were successful enough to buy out the Robert Eastman Company, which produced perfumes, creams, and a lotion. The lotion, called “Benzoin and Almond Lotion Compound” was superior to any other lotion on the market. Andrew changed the name of the lotion, using his last name. • The company focused their advertising on women, just when women were beginning to prefer store-bought items over homemade. Following aggressive marketing in magazines, radio, and in-store displays, the lotion became the top-selling lotion in the U.S. The entire Andrews Soap Company was re-named for Andrew. Today it’s a leader in personal care products. What was Andrew’s last name? Answer: Jergens. FACT • Chemist Theron T. Pond invented a moisturizing cream in 1846, based on healing witch hazel. Pond’s creams were marketed as burn remedies until 1904, when they started being sold as “vanishing” beauty creams.

Amazing Plants CORDYCEPS • Some of the most horrifying and fascinating members of the plant kingdom are found in the genus of fungi called “Cordyceps,” sometimes called “zombie fungus.” The word cordyceps springs from the Greek meaning “club head” for the shape the fungus typically takes as it grows out of the body of its hijacked victim. There are hundreds of different species of Cordyceps, and each one infects a different insect. • One type infects a particular species of ant. It starts when the ant walks across some fungus spores. The spores latch on to the ant and cannot be dislodged. The spores use enzymes and pressure to bore a hole through the ant’s exoskeleton, providing access to the ant’s nutritious body parts as well as the brain. • After incubating for two weeks inside the ant’s body, the fungus is able to control the ant’s brain. It then forces the ant to crawl up to a tall tree near the anthill, latch onto the underside of a leaf with a death grip, and remain still. In this position of optimal humidity and temperature, the fungus consumes the ant’s body, killing it, while a club-shaped stalk erupts from the ant’s head. • After maturing for three weeks, spores are released that rain down upon the anthill below, continuing the cycle. In this way, the fungus is often able to wipe out entire colonies of ants. When healthy ants discover an infected ant, they will carry the doomed ant far from the nest in an effort to avoid this fate. The battle between fungus and insect prevents the insect population from getting out of control. • Fossils show that this parasitical relationship has been going on for at least 48 million years. Experiments to try to infect ants with different strains of the fungus have failed, showing that the fungus and the ant co-evolved and cannot cross over. “It’s one of the most complex examples of parasites controlling animal behavior that we know about,” says entomologist David Hughes. • Some Cordyceps species are sources of biochemicals with interesting biological and pharmacological properties. Extracts are used as immuno-suppressants to prevent rejection in organ transplants, as well as to treat multiple sclerosis. Processed Cordyceps can also be found worldwide in liquid extracts, tinctures, powders, and capsules, with various claims for improving health. Other types of Cordyceps are used as food in soups, stews, and teas. • In China and Tibet, one species of fungus attacks the larvae of the ghost moth. Starting at the caterpillar’s head, the fungus grows into its body, eventually killing it, feeding off its carcass, and turning itself into an exact replica of the bug. This caterpillar fungus is used to make a tea reputed to have medicinal powers. It supposedly cures impotence, cancer, hair loss, and fatigue. In fact, when the Liaoning Province women’s track team broke the world record for both the 10,000 meters and the 1,500 meters in 1993, they were suspected of using performance-enhancing drugs. However, they claimed their performance was because of caterpillar fungus tea. • The demand for this caterpillar fungus tea is high. A kilogram of fungus-infused caterpillars can sell for several thousand dollars. A single caterpillar can sometimes fetch twice its weight in gold. Because the fungus grows only in high mountain plateaus, it’s impossible to cultivate on a farm.

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties CHEDDAR MAN
• The British village of Cheddar is famous not only for its cheese but also for Cheddar Gorge, a limestone canyon that sports an extensive set of caves. The caves offer the perfect environment for culturing cheese. It turns out that the atmosphere in the cave is also perfect for preserving skeletons. • The caves show signs of human use dating back to the end of the last ice age nearly 15,000 years ago. Cheddar Gorge and the network of over a hundred caves found there are Britain’s prime site for Paleolithic human remains. • In 1903, workmen digging a trench to drain water from a cave discovered a complete human skeleton. Many human remains had been found in the cave previously, but this skeleton turned out to be the oldest and most complete skeleton ever found in Britain. • Researchers found that the bones belonged to a young adult man, around age 23 at time of death. The skull showed signs of bone infection. More alarmingly, the man’s head had been bashed in, though it’s impossible to tell what caused the wound. Carbon dating shows that he lived about 9,000 years ago, around the year 7150 B.C. He was dubbed “Cheddar Man” and put on display at the Natural History Museum in London. • In 1996, Bryan Sykes of Oxford University extracted a piece of DNA from Cheddar Man’s molar and had it sequenced. He then went to the nearby town of Cheddar in search of DNA samples of twenty residents whose ancestors had lived the longest in the immediate area. The town council gave him the names of half a dozen families who had lived in the village for more than 200 years. Sykes asked them for cheek swabs so their DNA could be compared to the Cheddar Man. One of their teachers stepped up and volunteered to have his cheek swabbed to calm their fears. • Ninety centuries and 300 generations after Cheddar Man died, Bryan Sykes found a direct descendant living just half a mile away from the cave: the teacher, named Adrian Targett, is a direct descendant of Britain’s oldest known resident. This set a record for the world’s most distant confirmed relative. • Targett was born in Bristol, just 15 miles (24 km) away from the cave. “I’ve been in the cave a few times, but I never realized it was home,” he quipped when informed of the news. ‘’I’m thinking of writing to the Marquess of Bath, who owns these caves, and saying, I’d like my cave back.” Targett added, “I’m a history teacher. But I teach modern history, so Cheddar Man’s a bit out of my period. I have to admit that I know next to nothing about him.” • Bryan Sykes believes there are probably a lot of Cheddar descendants out there. He and a team at Oxford are making a genetic map of all of Europe and they estimate about 1 to 1.5 percent of Britain’s population is likely to share the same mitochondrial DNA markings found in Cheddar Man and Mr. Targett. • When Cheddar Man died, humans were still hunter-gatherers. It would be another thousand years before farming was invented. Targett, by contrast, sings in the town’s choir, plays bassoon in the school orchestra, likes his steaks rare, and is a steam engine buff. He doesn’t hunt and rarely gathers. • ‘’The point is that we’ve all got 9,000-year-old ancestors,’’ he said. ‘’I just happen to know who mine was.’’

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired engineer, and engineers like solving problems. I find that people have difficulty swallowing medications because swallowing a gulp of water is an unnatural act when compared with everyday unnoticed swallowing, and that people are taking too small a sip of water, so they feel the pills, which can trigger a gag reflex. The solution is to swallow a large sip of water without pills to prepare the mind and body for the relatively rare swallowing process that will follow. Then, take a large sip of water and swallow with pills. -- R.E. ANSWER: As someone who has studied physics, if not engineering, the small sip of water lubricates the esophagus, so pills are less likely to be stuck. I have always recommended a small sip followed by a large gulp, for a different reason from yours. As far as specific positions, some people seem to do better with chin up, others with chin down. Taking a pill with some food or applesauce (or something of similar texture) helps many people. Practicing with something (a breath mint or M&M) can help you find what works best for you. Tepid or even warm water helps some. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. She’s 85. She tried a cortisone shot, with very shortlived relief, and physical therapy, to no avail. She’s been prescribed pain pills, which cause her to sleep more than you’d expect for her age. Her doctor seems to be out of options. I read about laser treatment for this area. Do you think this might help, or do you have other ideas? -- M.R. ANSWER: “Spinal stenosis” is the term we use to describe compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots by bony structures in the spine. This may be a result of arthritis, skeletal disease and many other conditions. One common finding is difficulty after walking, causing someone to want to sit or lie down. I often see people with spinal stenosis who lean over while walking, as though they are walking into a stiff wind. Many sufferers can walk for prolonged periods with a shopping cart, because the leaning-over position relieves the pressure on the nerves. Surgery for spinal stenosis can be challenging, and in an 85-year-old, the risk of complications is higher. However, given her symptoms and lack of response to nonsurgical therapy, consulting with a surgeon may be appropriate. There may still be additional medical therapies she hasn’t tried before doing so. I am not a surgeon, and only a surgeon can appropriately choose the tools for a given surgery. However, having looked over the research in this area, there is no evidence that laser offers any advantage over traditional surgery. National Park Discount Is Still a Great Deal If you’d planned to pick up a couple of senior passes to the national parks as part of your autumn leaf-peeping travels, you’ll need to increase your budget. The lifetime access pass has gone from $10 to a whopping $80. The senior pass (full name: America the Beautiful -- The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass) is a bargain, providing admission to recreation areas run by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service and more. If you don’t want to pay the $80 all at once, consider a one-year pass for $20. Do that for four years, and you can convert it to a lifetime pass. There still are ways to visit our parks without breaking the bank. Some parks only charge a few dollars for admission. Others, like the national monuments, are free. Those that do charge have some free days designated each year. If you’re taking a trip soon, here’s a warning: The parks service is inundated with requests for passes, and you might not get yours before you leave. However, print out the confirmation you receive and take that with you, as well as a picture ID. If you’re planning to buy your pass at the recreation site, phone ahead; many have run out of passes. To buy online, go to yourpassnow. com. You’ll pay an extra $10 processing fee. If you are permanently disabled, you can get a free pass with documentation. If you already have the $10 lifetime pass, you won’t have to pay for a new one; you’re grandfathered in ... unless you lose the one you now have. Garden-Fresh Spanish Rice September is National Rice Month. Whether you enjoy long-grain rice or one of the many wild rice blends, rice is a nice change of pace in your daily diet. 2 1/2 cups peeled and chopped tomatoes 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped cabbage 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar Twin 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes 2 cups cooked rice 1. The pilot program started in Minnesota in May. Since then, the VA has been training people to push claims through quickly. Now, everyone is set to go. All they need is the claims to start rolling in. Here are your easy steps: Hook up with an accredited Veterans Service Organization, likely the American Legion or VFW. Collect all your documents. Be sure to go to your claim exam if required. Have the VSO send off your claim electronically. Start the 30-day countdown. There are a few caveats, however. For those who qualify, this will be a great improvement over the previous 100-plus day wait, but that 30 days doesn’t start until the claim is received at the VA. If you have to hunt down related paperwork and documents, the meter isn’t running yet. Another caveat: You need to go to your claim exam if one is required. And yet another caveat: All types of claims aren’t covered just yet. If you’re asking for an upgrade to a disability claim you already have, yes, they’re accepting those. But for other types of claims, have your VSO check to see if those are being worked on yet. And still another caveat: In the past, the VA had to hunt down all your medical and service records for you. Now, with this new program, you’re on your own.
