TIDBITS® EXAMINES PLANET NAMES by Kathy Wolfe

The planets in our solar system have derived their names from many varied sources, and have lent their names to several common items. This week, Tidbits presents a look at numerous uses of planet names. • Mercury was the messenger of the gods. The son of Zeus, Mercury was the father of Pan. According to mythology, Mercury could travel with the speed of thought. He also had the responsibility of leading the souls of the dead to the underworld. Mercury was also the god of commerce and financial gain; in fact, the word “merchant” is derived from his name. During the festival of Mercuralia, merchants sprinkled their heads, goods, businesses, and belongings with water to bring good luck. • The chemical element Mercury is commonly known as quicksilver, and is used in thermometers, barometers, and fluorescent lamps. Although a useful element, it can have toxic effects, including damage to the brain, kidneys, and lungs. Mercury poisoning can bring on impaired vision and hearing, a lack of coordination, tremors, violent muscle spasms, sleep disturbances, and memory loss. Mercury was found in excavated Egyptian tombs dating back to 1500 BC. turn the page for more!

PLANET NAMES (continued): • Venus was the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. Myths claimed she could also provide military victory and prosperity. • The ancient Greek statue, the Venus de Milo, was discovered in 1820 by a peasant. The marble sculpture was buried in the ruins of the ancient city of Milos on the Greek island of Milos. It was found in two large pieces – the upper torso and the lower draped legs – along with a few fragments of the upper left arm and hand holding an apple. It’s thought to represent Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The same goddess is known as Venus to the Romans, and since it was found on the island of Milos, the statue was named accordingly. Venus de Milo stands 6 ft. 8 in. (203 cm) high and is believed to have been created around 100 BC. In 1821, the statue arrived in France and presented to Louis XVIII, who donated it to the Louvre Museum, where it is still found today. It was removed from the Louvre in 1939, as war threatened Europe, and stored temporarily in the Chateau de Valencay, a mansion in the French Loire Valley. • The Mars candy company is the nation’s sixth largest privately-held company, still entirely owned by the family of its founder, Frank C. Mars. Having learned how to hand-dip chocolate from his mother in the late 1800s, Frank and his wife started up a factory in his Tacoma, Washington kitchen in 1911. A popular type of milkshake inspired Frank’s son to invent the Milky Way bar in 1923, advertising it as a “chocolate malted milk in a candy bar.” The Snickers bar came along in 1930, and the 3 Musketeers bar followed in 1932.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Before moving out about five months ago we found a good home for our cat, “Figaro.” I supplied everything the new owner would need, like his litter box and litter, food, etc. A week later, the new owner called and said Fig’s eye was weeping. He did suffer from that a year ago, so I bought the same over-thecounter medicine and delivered it to her. Four months later, she called again and accused me of knowing Fig had a preexisting condition. She demanded I come retrieve him, and that I also take him to the vet. I was shocked. What should I have done? -- Sorry for the Cat Problems DEAR SORRY: I believe the new owner just didn’t want to take care of a cat. And instead of taking Fig to the vet to treat his eye problem with a stronger medication, she

waited four months and then dumped him back on you. I’m pretty upset at this, and I know you are, too, because the victim here is Fig. He lost one home already, and now he’s losing a second home, and he’s sick. He may wind up in a shelter. I’m not sure how this might play out legally, but we’re dealing with a living being here, and Fig’s welfare is at stake. So, take the high road and be Fig’s hero. If there is any way you can take him in for a few weeks while you rehome him, please try. Or, ask the new owner for time while you find someone else to care for him. Also, find out if the new owner has taken Fig to the vet. If not, and if you have the resources, offer to pay for the visit and medicine. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. • In 1941, with the U.S. at war, Frank Mars anticipated a shortage of sugar and chocolate. He approached Bruce Murrie, an executive at Hershey, with an idea for a candy to be sold strictly to the military. The candy was chocolate with a candy coating, and was heat-resistant and easyto-ship, the perfect treat for soldiers. Mars offered Murrie a 20% share in return for a steady source of chocolate, and the little candies became known as M&M’s. After the war, in 1945, M&M’s were made available to the public. It wasn’t until 1950 that the little “m” was imprinted on each candy. Peanut M&M’s debuted in 1954. More than 400 million M&M’s are produced in the U.S. every day. • Uranus, also known as Ouranos, was the god of the sky in mythology. According to Greek literature, he was called Father Sky, and was the son of Gaia, Mother Earth. Uranus was the father of Saturn, who was the father of Jupiter, who was the father of Mars. • Jupiter was the chief Roman god, god of light, sky, and weather, as well as laws. His Greek equivalent was Zeus. • The Miami Marlins Class A minor league baseball team is based in Jupiter, Florida, and is known as the Jupiter Hammerheads, named for the hammerhead shark. • Neptune, the Roman god of water, is pictured as a tall, white-bearded man, carrying a three-pronged fisherman’s spear known as a trident. Because he traveled over the sea in a horse-drawn chariot, he was also believed to be in charge of the sport of horse-racing. His Greek counterpart is the god Poseidon. Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, who reigned over the heavenly realms, the earthly world, and the underworld. • Neptunalia is a festival held on July 23, paying homage to and asking for blessings of water from Neptune during summer’s drought and heat.

Not Just Parties, a GREAT PLACE TO Eat and Play ANYTIME! Eggshell China Q: I have inherited some china and am curious if it has any value. The pattern is Eggshell Georgian and manufactured by Homer Laughlin. -- Barbara, Sonoma, California A: During the late 1930s, Homer Laughlin China Company produced Eggshell lines of dinnerware. The Eggshell wares were different from all of the previous designs in that the pieces were much lighter in weight due to the new precision machines and tools that had been installed by the company at its main plant in Ohio. The Eggshell Georgian is the second pattern issued in this series. Advertisements in trade journals promoting the new china were published as early as October of 1935. For a complete history of this pattern and others manufactured by Homer Laughlin, I highly recommend The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin by Joanne Jasper (Collector Books). I found several copies available at amazon.com for $18.96, used copies $12.50. Typical prices listed in this excellent guide are an Eggshell Georgian 10-inch plate, $9-$12; tea cup, $3-$6; teapot, $45-$65; and salad bowl, $15-$30. *** Q: I have a collection of books and would like to know how much they are worth. I am

enclosing a list. -- Matthew, Hudson, New York A: I get dozens of book questions each month, and my answer is generally the same. If you’ve written me recently about books, this answer is for you. For those who have access to a computer, one of the easiest ways to find out current prices is to visit www.abe.com. Type in the title and author of each book, and in most cases other copies being offered for sale will soon appear on your screen. Copyright dates and condition are both extremely important when making comparisons. *** Q: I have a high-fidelity tape recording of President John Kennedy’s funeral. Also on the tape is a dance recital and “Santa, 1962.” How much do you think the tape is worth? -- Lee, Lancaster, New York A: Your tape probably is a home recording, and as such its value would be minimal. I do not think it would be of interest to collectors. For a second opinion, contact antique dealers in your area. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. * Before he became the beloved novelist Americans know and love, a 15-year-old Jack London worked in a pickle factory earning 10 cents an hour. Desperate to get out of the closed-in, steamy cannery, he decided to join the ranks of an entirely different profession: oyster pirates. Pacific coast oyster beds that had been accessible to the public had recently been turned into private oyster farms, off limits to the working-class fishermen who had relied on them. This created an underclass of pirates who would fill bags with oysters under cover of night -- and London, who borrowed the money to buy a sloop called the “Razzle Dazzle,” quickly became one of the best. His prowess and daring earned him the nickname “Prince of the Oyster Pirates.” * You may not realize it, but if you’ve ever spent a winter in the northern climes, you’ve probably made a sitzmark (or at least seen one). That’s the mark made when someone falls backward into the snow -- like a snow angel. * If you live in or travel frequently to Las Vegas, keep in mind that in that city, it’s against the law for a man with a mustache to kiss a woman. *** Thought for the Day: “One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised.” -- Chinua Achebe (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

In San Francisco, the company operates a copper-domed Neo-Classical building with more than 8,500 spots for cremation urns. A more unusual final resting place is located off the coast near Key Biscayne, Florida. The world’s largest man-made underwater reef, covering 600,000 sq. ft. (65,000 sq. m), and located 40 feet (12.2 m) below the surface has been dubbed the Atlantis Reef. Cremated remains are mixed with cement to create features of the Reef, which has a planned expansion to 16 acres, with an eventual goal of 125,000 remains. Underwater roads lead to a central area with benches and statues. Memorial plaques mark the final home of each of the deceased.

Saturn vehicles were a subsidiary of General Motors, founded as a private employee-owned company, and marketed as a “different kind of car company.” The first Saturn drove off the assembly line in Spring Hill, Tennessee in 1990, and vehicles were manufactured until 2009.

UNUSUAL PLANTS: DANDELIONS Did you know that every April 5th, we celebrate National Dandelion Day? Let’s take a look at this little plant, which can be viewed as a pretty flower or a pesky weed. • Dandelions are members of the same family as asters, daisies, and sunflowers. With about 100 species known to exist, they’re found on every continent and used as food almost since the beginning of time! The name of this bright yellow flowering plant comes from the French “dent de lion,” which translates “lion’s tooth,” because of the toothed leaves of the plant. Its folk names include swine snort, bitterwort, Irish daisy, Priest’s Crown, and cankerwort. • Each of the bright yellow petals of the dandelion is actually an individual flower that will produce a fruit. When the flowers turn into the familiar puff ball, these fruits (called achenes) will be dispersed by the wind and reseed. A seed can travel 5 miles (8 km) before it finally reaches the ground. If their habitat is disturbed, dandelions will produce more seed than usual as a defense mechanism. • The dandelion will grow up to 17 inches (43 cm) in height. If it seems like they’re tough to dig up, it’s because their roots can reach up to 15 feet (4.5 m) underground. However, the usual length is 18” (45 cm), still plenty hard enough to pull up. • The stem of the dandelion is hollow, but it produces a milky liquid that contains latex. Scientists are researching its potential as an ingredient in automobile tires. • While dandelions are considered a nuisance in our beautiful residential lawns, they are actually harvested as a crop in Belgium.

• There seems to be no end to the health benefits of the dandelion. The entire plant is edible, and is rich in Vitamins A, C, and K, as well as possessing a high level of iron, calcium, and potassium. The good news for diabetics is that dandelion juice stimulates the production of insulin in the pancreas, lowering blood sugar level. Research also indicates that dandelions can boost the immune system. • Drinking dandelion tea is good for the digestive Cajun digestion Turkeyand acts as a system, since it promotes mild natural laxative. It’s also used for relief from liver and urinary disorders and jaundice. • The dandelion’s milky sap is useful for treating fungal infections, for itchiness, ringworm, and eczema. It can ease the pain of a bee sting, and has been known to eliminate warts and acne. • Dandelion can also be used as a natural fabric dye, with the flower heads producing a yellow-green color and the leaves making a purple dye. • Some folks make a tasty dandelion wine with flower petals, sugar, lemon, raisins, white grape juice, and yeast. Dandelions can also be used in the making of root beer. • Every Spring, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia hosts their annual Dandelion Festival, featuring a fishing derby, car show, and art show. A cluster of four dandelion flowers is the emblem of the community. The dandelion is also the official flower of the University of Rochester, with “The Dandelion Yellow” their official song.

VITAMIN C April 4 is Vitamin C Day, so Tidbits is concentrating on the details of this water-soluble vitamin. • A water-soluble vitamin is one that the body doesn’t store. We have to get our needs from foods on a continual basis. • The vitamin was first discovered in 1912, then isolated in 1928 by a Hungarian biochemist named Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgi, who was conducting research on the chemistry of cell respiration. It was first made in 1933. • Vitamin C is necessary for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. It’s crucial for the production of collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen, found in bones, cartilage, muscles, skin, and tendons, is what holds the body together. Vitamin C is vital for the healing of wounds, as well as helping the body absorb iron, and for the synthesis process that helps convert fat to energy. • Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is the result of the breakdown of joint cartilage and bone, resulting in pain from the pressure on joints. Although people who eat diets rich in Vitamin C are less likely to be diagnosed with arthritis, there isn’t any evidence that taking Vitamin C supplements will help treat it. • Because Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, it blocks some of the damage caused by free radicals, those molecules responsible for aging and tissue damage that can harm DNA. Many studies indicate that getting a good supply of Vitamin C may be connected to

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com lower rates of cancer. VITAMIN C (continued): • If the body is deficient in Vitamin C, it will exhibit signs of dry, splitting hair, gingivitis, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and a decreased ability to fight infection. Skin is dry and scaly and bruises easily. Low levels of Vitamin C make a person more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, and have been associated with gallbladder disease and high blood pressure. Smokers have a higher risk of deficiency, as well as those who take nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. • Scurvy is an extreme lack of Vitamin C in the diet. It takes at least a month of little to none before the symptoms begin. It was documented as a disease by Hippocrates, and described as early as 1550 BC. A 1753 publication by a Scottish Royal Navy surgeon was the first evidence of the proof that scurvy could be treated with citrus fruit. The disease was rampant among early sailors on lengthy voyages since fruits and vegetables could not be kept fresh for very long. • Vitamin C can be found in a multitude of foods and is easy to obtain from the diet. Fruits and vegetables are the richest source, including citrus fruits, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, mangos, pineapple, berries, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and squash. Because Vitamin is sensitive to light, air, and heat, raw or lightly cooked fruits vegetables are a better source. • When you feel a cold coming on, do you load up on Vitamin C? It’s a popular belief that it can cure the common cold, but there really isn’t scientific evidence to back up that claim. Those who take Vitamin C supplements on a regular basis, not just when they feel a cold coming on, may see about a one-day reduction in the cold’s duration.

Bed Sores Linked to COPD DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 89 years old and just learned that I have the first stages of bed sores on my buttocks. My dermatologist said that I should stay off of it as much as possible and apply hydrocortisone cream. I have COPD, and I need to sleep sitting up. I wonder if you have any other suggestions to help my pain and discomfort. -- A.A.

ANSWER: Bed sores (also called pressure ulcers) are potentially serious problems that require immediate attention. We “stage” bed sores into four categories. Hopefully you have stage one, where there is skin redness, usually over a bony prominence such as the sacrum, the hand-shaped bone at the base of the spine. A stage two bed sore may be a shallow, open ulcer or a blister. At stage three there is full-thickness loss of the skin, while a stage four has exposed muscle or bone. Sometimes, it is impossible to stage ulcers from their appearance alone. A stage one bed sore often is treated with a clear film for protection. Hydrocortisone cream is surprising to me, since steroids can thin the skin when used excessively, which you certainly don’t want to do. The pain should be treated, but you should be taking this as your body’s warning that there is a problem. The key to preventing further injury is to find a way to take pressure off the area. Sleeping sitting up puts all your weight on your lower back, buttocks and thighs, which in turn puts these areas at a high risk for pressure ulcers. There are several ways to combat this, including different kinds of mattresses and pads, and even a device that adjusts automatically to pressure. Changing positions frequently (every two hours or less) is critical if you are not using a special mattress or pad. There are wound-management specialists, both nurses and doctors, with expertise for your particular situation. I would ask your doctor about finding and consulting with one. People with COPD are at high risk for poor nutrition, and making sure you are getting adequate protein and calories is critical, as poor nutrition is a big risk for serious bed sores. I strongly recommend a visit with a nutritionist. Also, perhaps your COPD treatment could be optimized to make it easier to sleep in a supine (lying-down) position. This means a revisit with your regular doctor or the consultant doctor who is treating your COPD. *** DEAR DR.ROACH: I am writing to you regarding your recent column about psoriasis. My husband spent most of his life suffering from severe psoriasis, until he was told of an all-natural solution: cilantro. In a matter of a few months he was completely symptom-free, and remains so after more than a year. He simply adds a few sprigs of cilantro to a garden salad once a day. -- J.L. ANSWER: I also have read that eating fresh cilantro helps psoriasis. I couldn’t find any study that looked at this, and people responding to online support groups reported mixed results. However, it is very safe and might be worth a try. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. * On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shoots President Abraham Lincoln during a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered, effectively ending the Civil War. * On April 12, 1888, Cecil Kimber, founder of the British sports car company MG, is born in England. Following World War II, returning American soldiers who had become fans of MGs while serving in Europe helped popularize the brand in the U.S. * On April 16, 1917, Vladimir Lenin, leader of the revolutionary Bolshevik Party, returns to Petrograd after a decade of exile to take the reins of the Russian Revolution. Lenin was drawn to the revolutionary cause after his brother was executed in 1887 for plotting to assassinate Czar Alexander II. * On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson, age 28, becomes the first black player in Major League Baseball when he steps onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn to compete for the Dodgers. Robinson broke the color barrier in a sport that had been segregated for more than 50 years. * On April 11, 1968, rescue workers pick up the last survivors of the Wahine ferry disaster off the coast of Wellington, New Zealand. The ferry had capsized the previous day after hitting sharp rocks, leaving 53 people dead. * On April 10, 1972, British film pioneer Charlie Chaplin accepts an honorary Academy Award for his “incalculable” contribution to the art of filmmaking. Chaplin had left the U.S. in 1952 for failure to pay taxes and McCarthyera accusations. He came back long enough to accept the award. * On April 13, 1997, 21-year-old Tiger Woods wins the prestigious Masters Tournament by a record 12 strokes in Augusta, Georgia, in the greatest performance by a professional golfer in more than a century. McGregorMayweather Prediction: It’s gonna happen. Bonus prediction: Floyd Mayweather will beat Conor McGregor. Suggestion: Bet on McGregor because I may have the worst track record in history when it comes to predicting anything. I was thinking about this the other night when I saw one of the most absurd things ever flash across my news ticker. No way, I thought to myself. This cannot be true, I said aloud. But enough about our president’s tweets ... Xavier beats Maryland? Duke loses? Villanova’s gone? Looking at my bracket in stunned silence -- kind of like the dead air on Mike Francesa’s show -- the hits kept coming, courtesy of Dana White and the UFC lightweight champion. The arena has been reserved in Las Vegas for a September match. Could it possibly be true that a retired champion at age 40 can take on a brash 28-year-old? Would he put his undefeated record on the line? “Yep,” Mayweather said. Well, there ya have it. It would be the biggest fight in history in terms of money and audience, and would rival Louis-Schmeling, Ali-Frazier and the rematch of Rocky Balboa against Clubber Lang in terms of significance. It will net a billion-dollar payday, the largest in history. It has that irresistible hook: Who would win in a fight between the two fighting styles? Mayweather, even at 40, still has considerable speed and is the best defensive boxer and cheap-shot artist in history, period. Though McGregor has a 2-inch reach advantage, Mayweather’s speed and footwork renders that to nothing. McGregor likes to slip big overhand lefts after sliding off an opponent’s jab, but it’s hard to see him doing that much. Mayweather will work the angles, move in and out, and should easily win in a decision after dismantling McGregor in every single round, barring a stoppage due to a cut. But, hey ... as long as McGregor is in there, he still has a puncher’s chance. McGregor has a lease lined up for a training facility and has a California State boxing license. A former amateur Irish boxing champ, he trained with two Freddie Roach proteges. Expect to see Roach in his corner. Also, expect to hear a lot -- and I mean a lot -- of trash talking from McGregor. “Watch me take over boxing,” McGregor said. “No one in this boxing game knows what is coming. Look me in the eyes: 28 years old, confident as a [expletive], long range [and] dangerous with every hand ... trust me, I will stop Floyd. The whole world will eat their words.” Both fighters have been around the block a few times. In September, we’ll get to see if it was a good idea to cross the street. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, one in every 250 emergency room visits was because of adverse drug reactions. Seniors were well-represented, coming in at 30 percent of the total. The numbers will no doubt continue to rise as we age and end up in the offices of more specialists. Most of us take at least one prescription drug, and some take more than 10. Here are a few steps you can take to keep safe from adverse drug reactions: * When you visit a doctor, bring along all your medications. Nowadays, many local doctors are hooked up via computer and can check your records with other medical offices, but not all. Unless you know you can make a detailed, accurate list, load up a shoebox with all your prescription drugs and take them with you. Ask whether you’re still to take all of the drugs, and if you need blood tests for monitoring. * Don’t forget your over-the-counter drugs, even if you rarely take them. One of them might be contraindicated for mixing with your regular prescriptions. At least one kind of over-the-counter drug isn’t thought to be safe for people with high blood pressure. * Go to the same pharmacy every time. Your drug records will be stored in one place, and a pharmacist will notice if you’re taking certain drugs that will be combined with a new one. He or she will be able to tell you how to take the drug, and can verify what’s in the container. (Some labels describe the pills inside by color and shape.) Ask whether a new one can be taken at the same time as the others. * Keep a chart at home, especially if you’re starting a new drug that will go along with other ones. Tainted Drinking Water Beyond Camp Lejeune

It’s finally here: eight conditions have been added to the Department of Veterans Affairs list of presumptive illnesses caused by tainted drinking water at Camp Lejeune. While the VA has been treating 15 illnesses, there were no benefits attached. Now it will provide disability benefits for: adult leukemia, aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Parkinson’s disease. Dates of service are Aug. 1, 1953 to Dec. 31, 1987, for a minimum of 30 days. Yes, this is great news. Yes, this means ill veterans will get the benefits they deserve. And yes ... this is all so very late. Remember years ago when Colorado Sen. Kay Hagen shredded The National Research Council and pointed out all the research the NRC ignored? Remember all the little kids who came down with leukemia, and the federal study that showed twice the rate of birth defects at Camp Lejeune? And remember the shock when 700,000 lost documents were suddenly found? Remember when it was revealed that dry-cleaning fluid was in the drinking water at Tarawa from 1957 to 1985? We can’t forget just because the benefits have kicked in. Why? Because in 1977, a civilian contractor discovered that TCE was present in the drinking water at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire. The base closed in 1991 and turned into Pease International Tradeport. In 2015 the EPA jumped in and found perfluorinated compounds, an ingredient in firefighting foam, and others. The state of New Hampshire started testing people, and based on results, it’s changed the initial health advisory (short-term drinking water exposure) to a lifetime health advisory level. For more information on not only Pease, but hundreds of other bases, Google “Pease Air Force Base water.” (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
