TIDBITS® ENJOYS IRONY by Janet Spencer

The definition of ‘irony’ is “incongruity between what is expected to be and what actually is, or a situation or result showing such incongruity.” Come along with Tidbits as we laugh at a few choice examples of irony at work in the world!

IRONY AT WORK IN THE WORLD

• In 1966 Harry Guyton, who worked for the prosecutor’s office in San Francisco, put his name on a waiting list to get a reserved parking space in a city-owned garage downtown. Nineteen years later he was notified that the parking space was his… …after he had been retired for two years. • City public information director Randy Myer of Lexington, KY, paid $400 for steel-belted tires guaranteed to be bulletproof, bombproof, and spikeproof. He got a flat tire… …when he rolled over a ballpoint pen. • When Frank Taylor, age 86, was arrested in Hollywood on charges of malicious mischief, he used his free phone call… …to contact the Los Angeles airport and make a bomb threat. • In Cedar Lake, Indiana, a large watchdog quietly observed two people robbing his master’s store. He then proceeded… …to bite the cop who came to investigate.

2251B Honeysuckle Lane • Wellston Why Dogs Can’t Use People Toothpaste

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog’s veterinarian said that I need to brush her teeth to keep them from falling out. He then tried to sell me a tube of “special” toothpaste that cost $9! Plus it smelled like canned chicken. What is the point if brushing isn’t going to freshen her breath? Can I just buy regular toothpaste from the drugstore? Sign me -- Angry in Iowa DEAR ANGRY: The No. 1 reason not to use “regular” toothpaste made for humans on a pet is because it contains flouride, which can be fatal to pets if ingested. And because your dog will swallow all toothpaste being used on her teeth, that is a problem. Why brush? Healthy teeth and gums don’t just preserve her teeth, they can prevent heart disease. So, knuckle down and buy a dogspecific toothbrush and toothpaste, either

from the vet or the pet store. Or, you can even make your own baking soda- and bullionbased recipe. To brush your dog’s teeth, hold her securely and place a little bit of doggy toothpaste on the brush (you can use a cotton ball on puppies and small dogs, to start). Let her taste it, then cradle her muzzle and lift one side of her lip. Place the brush against her gums and gently sweep downward. She will lick the toothpaste away as you work, so use as much as you need. The first few tries may even be frustrating as she tries to break away. The key is to brush regularly, at least once a week, and try different flavors. And never scold her: give lots of encouragement during the brush and a healthy treat right after. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The truck was wrecked and all 5,000 copies of the book burned in the resulting fire. The cause of the accident was… …a bus — a wayward bus — that had been traveling down the wrong side of the road. • Albert J . Lowry, author of “How To Become Financially Independent by Investing in Real Estate” and other best-selling books on how to get rich… …filed for bankruptcy under Chapter VII of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. • Horatio Alger, famous for his rags-to-riches stories… …died penniless. • The address where Mrs. O’Leary’s cow presumably kicked over a lantern, starting the Chicago fire in 1871… …is now the address of the Chicago Fire Academy. • The first time the Harlem Globetrotters ever actually played a game in Harlem was in 1968… …after they’d been in existence for over 40 years.

Napoli Glass

Q: I purchased a bowl that has been identified as Napoli glass. What exactly is Napoli glass? -Sherrie, Westport, Connecticut A: According to “Glass A to Z” by David Shotwell, Napoli glass was patented in 1894 by Albert Steffen, then supervisor of the Mount Washington Glass Company. This type of glass is made by forming an outline of a figure or design on one side of the ware and forming the actual figure or design on the opposite. When viewed from the side with the outline, the outline will appear to combine with the main body. Colored glass and metallic bits are sometimes used in the decorating process. Early pieces of Napoli glass are considered scarce and quite collectible. *** Q: I have inherited about four dozen pieces of Fiesta. The collection was started by my mom in about 1940. I have decided to keep them, but have no idea of current values. Can you recommend a good price guide that you feel is reliable? -Sharon, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: There are several guides available, but one that I have found especially useful is “Warman’s Fiesta: Identification and Price Guide” by Glen Victorey,

or the alify f scount u Q o T Di st be 00.00 $15,0 elivery Mu e D th Home 0 miles of ter. 4 n i Cen With ales S n o ers Hend

and published by Krause Books. Values can differ from region to region, so keep this in mind when using any reference source. Victorey, who has collected Fiesta for more than three decades, features a production timeline for establishing date of manufacture, a color chart (which is very important since color impacts scarcity) and what I feel is upto-date pricing. It is illustrated with more than 700 photographs in full color. *** Q: In 1965, my mom bought me a Mickey Mouse alarm clock for my birthday. I still have it, and I am curious about how much it might be worth 50 years later. -- Tom, Littleton, Colorado A: Your alarm clock is a re-issue of an earlier clock manufactured by Bayard in France. The dial face has separate diecut pointer hands and a separate diecut in its head that nods as seconds tick. Your clock in its original box is worth in the $300-$1,300 range, $250-$800 without box, according to the “Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. by Samantha Weaver * It was 19th-century mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford who made the following sage observation: “It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.”

* Thanks to stories of Robin Hood, most people have heard of King Richard the Lion-Hearted. He wasn’t much of a king, though; he spent only about six months in England, and he didn’t even speak English. * If you have the great good fortune to take a cruise along the length of the Danube River -Europe’s second-longest -- you’ll hear seven languages spoken along the banks as you travel. * Just a couple of hours southwest of Indianapolis, you’ll find the town of Vincennes, Indiana, home to the Backyard Roller Coasters. This is where John Ivers, a blue-collar worker, decided he wanted to build a roller coaster in the backyard of his home off Highway 41 -- and he didn’t let his lack of an engineering background stop him. The thrilling 10-second ride was completed in 2001, and in 2006 those with less nerve got their own, tamer coaster on the same site. The coasters are open to the public, so visitors can try out either (or both) of the rides by making an appointment. * You may be surprised to learn that an elephant is 40 to 50 years old before all of its teeth come in. * Aside from being well-known conquerors, what did Alexander the Great and Napoleon have in common? They both hated cats. *** Thought for the Day: “Man can be the most affectionate and altruistic of creatures, yet he’s potentially more vicious than any other. He is the only one who can be persuaded to hate millions of his own kind whom he has never seen and to kill as many as he can lay his hands on in the name of his tribe or his God.” -- Benjamin Spock (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

His job was… …to find ways for the state to save money. • In the ancient Greek city of Amyclae, rulers were tired of the panic that ensued whenever the rumor was spread that the Spartan army was on the way to attack the city. To stop the panic, they decreed that anyone spreading such false rumors would be put to death. When the Spartan army really did appear… …everybody was too chicken to report it. The city was taken without a fight. • The American yew tree is a shrub used extensively in landscaping around Washington D.C. The botanical name of the bush is… …Taxus. • When Joyce Lott was arrested on drug charges and sent to prison in South Carolina, she was surprised to meet her long-lost sister, who was also in prison for drug charges. When the newspaper ran an article about the unlikely reunion, the sisters got a call… …from their long-lost half-brother. He was also doing time for drugs, larceny, and burglary. • Police arrested Dennis John Alson of Van Nuys, California on forgery charges. He paid his bail with a cashier’s check for $1,500… …which was a forgery. • After a series of burglaries, police in Pasco, Washington loaned the business a fancy $4,000 burglar alarm. Within a week… …it had been stolen by burglars. • In Wausau, Wisconsin in 1981, two women had a fender bender at the Fifth Street intersection. After the cops had wrapped up their paperwork, the two ladies drove off in opposite directions. A minute later… …their cars collided at an intersection a block away.

Amazing Animals SHARKS • The word shark probably comes from the German word ‘schurke’ meaning villain or scoundrel. • Shark teeth are replaceable. Their jaws are lined with several rows of teeth ready to move forward as the front teeth fall out. A shark can use up to 20,000 teeth in a lifetime. Some shark mouths have 3,000 teeth in use at once. • Fossil shark teeth found near Chesapeake Bay were 5 inches long. The prehistoric shark they came from must have been large enough so that a person could have easily stood upright between its jaws. • The largest shark ever caught in modern times had teeth 3 inches (13 cm) long and was 30 feet (9 m) long. On the other hand, the midwater shark of the Gulf of Mexico is only 6 inches (15 cm) long when mature. • The skin of a shark is not covered with scales, but with dentricles, which are akin to tiny teeth. A shark can do much damage just by brushing against a human. Leather made from the skin of a tiger shark has up to 10 times the tensile strength of ox hide. • Two-thirds of the brains of some shark species are devoted to odor detection. • Sharks can detect one part of blood per ten billion parts of water - that means they could detect one drop of blood in a volume the size of an Olympic swimming pool. • Sharks will eat anything. Some of the odd things that have been found in their stomachs include: a roll of roofing paper, a telephone book, pots and pans, a drinkable bottle of wine, a keg of nails, a car license plate, and a yellow-billed cuckoo. • A 15-foot (4.5 m) white shark caught off Florida had in its stomach 2 brown sharks, each 6 feet (1.8 m) long.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 ATTACK FACTS • The chances of being attacked by a shark are about equal to being struck by lightning. About 20% of shark attack victims die. • Between 50 and 100 fatal shark attacks occur worldwide each year. In the U.S., the majority of attacks occur off Florida and California, because both sharks and people prefer warm water. • Half of attacks occur within 200 feet (61 m) of shore, and half of those happen in water that is shoulder deep. • Victims who are wading are more likely to die than submerged scuba divers, perhaps because divers are better able to fight the attacker. • Scientists are unable to explain why men are 13 times more likely than women to be attacked. • Sharks seem to be attracted to bright, contrasting colors. Yellow is their favorite— a color commonly used in flotation devices, rescue equipment, and scuba gear. Black is the color that sharks are most likely to ignore. • When sharks choose a victim, they tend to concentrate only on that person, totally ignoring other people who are trying to help. • When under attack by a shark, the worst thing to do is to thrash and flee. That’s what sharks expect. What sharks don’t expect— and don’t like— is prey that fights back. Swim directly at the shark, shout, wave your arms, blow scuba bubbles at it, and try to hit it on the snout, gills, or eyes. • Dolphins have been trained to protect divers from sharks. • Off Charleston, South Carolina, junk cars are sunk to form an artificial reef. One scuba diver was attacked by a shark while spearfishing, but escaped by shutting himself in the front seat of a Chevrolet.

TERRIBLE TERMITES • In South Carolina, a wedding party in a photographer’s studio was being photographed when the floor collapsed, dumping them into the basement. In Mississippi, the band playing in the bandstand during 4th of July festivities plunged through the floor. In Tennessee, pacifists staged a peace rally at the courthouse. American Legionaries held a counter-protest and paraded in military style up the courthouse steps, which collapsed beneath them. All of these incidents were caused by termites. • In 1951 a warehouse in Missouri was found to be termite infested. Just then one of the worst floods in the city’s history inundated the town. For a full week, the warehouse was submerged. When the flood receded, the owners of the warehouse figured that their termite problem was over. However, after the mud was shoveled out, the termites were found to be still alive and thriving. Termites do more damage in the U.S. than lightning, tornadoes, arson, and vandalism combined. • Termites were among the first insects to appear on earth, showing up well before the dinosaurs. They are found in every state except Alaska. Texas has more species of termites than any other state with 17. California is a close second, followed by Arizona and Florida. Areas of least infestation include Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas. Termites have been able to expand their range vastly due to the invention of central heating, which keeps them warm throughout the winter. Infestation is so heavy in Washington, D.C. that city codes prohibit the construction of wooden floors in city buildings. Termites were once found living on the 11th floor of a high-rise hotel in Silver Moon Beach, Florida. They got all the water they needed from a leaky ice-cube machine and an incontinent poodle. (continued next page)

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com TERRIBLE TERMITES (cont’d) • All termites are deaf. However, they are extremely sensitive to vibrations, which is why they never live in railroad ties, bowling alleys, or factories with heavy machinery. • Termites devour not only all kinds of wood and wood products, but also wool, horns, ivory, rubber, plastic, and manure. They have been known to eat the corks right out of wine bottles. One kind of Panamanian termite can gnaw through lead sheathing on cables and even eats through concrete. Voracious Australian termites can reduce an abandoned ranch to dust in a matter of a few years. • Some termite colonies in Africa are estimated to be more than 80 years old and contain 3 million or more termites. All the termites in a colony are descended from the same set of parents. A queen termite is 2,400 times bigger than the worker termites. A queen can lay 84,000 eggs in a single day. • Over 50 species of birds eat termites. A flicker (a type of woodpecker) dissected by an ornithologist had 1,109 termites in its stomach. • Termites construct tunnels in all directions from their nest to avoid the sunlight. Some tunnels extend 100 yards (91 m) or more. Workmen once uncovered a system of tunnels 13 feet (4 m) below the surface of the earth. • Although no kind of North American termite makes its nest above ground, the practice is common in tropical termites. Cement-like termite columns may rise 30 feet (9 m) high. Composed of earth, saliva, and excrement, the material is extremely tough. When crushed and rolled, it forms marvelous tennis courts, roads, pottery, and bricks. One large mound yielded enough material to make almost half a million bricks. On a golf course in Africa, golfers tee off from the flat top of a 15-foot (4.5 m) termite mound while 100 other mounds on the course provide the hazards.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Don’t Let Summer Heat Curtail Cardio Workout DEAR DR. ROACH: I usually walk 45 minutes daily for a cardio workout. However, the Florida summer heat can be brutal, so instead of walking, I swim and walk one hour in the pool. Is that as good a cardio workout as walking? -- R.G. ANSWER: I think that having several different ways to exercise is a good idea, since the muscles used will always be at least somewhat different and it can keep you from being bored when doing the same thing day after day. In your situation, I think that it makes a great deal of sense to avoid the heat by getting in the pool. The intensity of a cardiovascular workout can be measured simply by your pulse rate. A rough but commonly used guide is that moderate cardiovascular exercise is 50 percent to 70 percent of your age-predicted maximum of 220 minus your age. So for age 50, your maximum is 170, and moderate exercise is a pulse of 85 to 119. You can check your pulse at the wrist with a clock, or wear a heart monitor. Swimming almost always is a more-intense workout than walking (race walkers certainly can get a very fast pulse rate), and walking in the pool is a good exercise for your heart and many muscles. If the pool is outdoors, as is usual in warm, sunny places, you need to wear and reapply plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1978, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. It was on the pituitary gland and pushing on the optic nerve. I had surgery, but only half was removed because of the optic nerve. The other half was shrunk with chemo and radiation. I am concerned about the long-term effects of radiation, because I had a stroke in 2012 and the doctors said this stroke might have been a link to long-term effects of radiation. But 36 years later? Can you confirm or deny that the long-term effects of radiation cause stroke? -- B.R. ANSWER: I can’t tell you whether your stroke was caused by the radiation you received; however, I can confirm that high-dose radiation (from radiation therapy for your tumor, not from a diagnostic CT scan) increases the overall risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke. A well-done study from Australia in 2011 showed that radiation treatment approximately doubles the risk of TIA and stroke. This does not mean that the treatment you had in 1978 was inappropriate. Treatment of a brain tumor, even a noncancerous one, is critical, because there is very little room in your head for a tumor in that position. The medical treatment we have now for these kinds of tumors was not available in 1978. What this means for people with a history of radiation treatment to the head is that they should do everything to reduce their risk of stroke, which means no smoking, careful control of blood pressure and cholesterol, careful diet including low sodium and low sugar, and discussion with a doctor about aspirin therapy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Ali in His Own Words

• The Great Seed Hunt (Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23) – June 26

To paraphrase Billy Crystal, what can I say about Muhammad Ali that he hasn’t already said about himself? Over the years, I have written or mentioned Ali more than any other athlete, a pretty astonishing fact when you consider he hadn’t had a fight in three decades. No, Ali’s toughest fight was the bout he waged with Parkinson’s, an insidious disease that robbed Ali of his physical prowess and robbed the world of one of its most precious resources: the words coming out of his mouth. Rather than add my pen to the wealth of eulogies out there, I would like to turn to the man himself. Taken in context, his boastful pre-fight psych out/ psych up missives are seen more as relics than actual boasts. In an era where the black athlete was supposed to play, endure insults and shut up (think Jackie Robinson), Ali indeed shook up the world in loud, proud declarations that redefined what it meant to be a sportsman and showman. On being the Greatest: “This is the legend of Cassius Clay, The most beautiful fighter in the world today. He talks a great deal, and brags indeed-y, Of a muscular punch that’s incredibly speed-y. The fistic world was dull and weary, But with a champ like Liston, things had to be dreary. Then someone with color and someone with dash, Brought fight fans a runnin’ with Cash. This brash young boxer is something to see And the heavyweight championship is his destin-y.

“This kid fights great; he’s got speed and endurance, But if you sign to fight him, increase your insurance. This kid’s got a left; this kid’s got a right, If he hit you once, you’re asleep for the night. And as you lie on the floor while the ref counts 10, You’ll pray that you won’t have to fight me again. “I am the man this poem’s about, I’ll be champ of the world, there isn’t a doubt. Here I predict Mr. Liston’s dismemberment, I’ll hit him so hard; he’ll wonder where October and November went. When I say two, there’s never a third, Standin’ against me is completely absurd. When Cassius says a mouse can outrun a horse, Don’t ask how; put your money where your mouse is! I AM THE GREATEST!” Asked how he wanted to be remembered, Ali gave his “recipe for life.” “He took a few cups of love. “He took one tablespoon of patience, one teaspoon of generosity, one pint of kindness; he took one quart of laughter, one pinch of concern. “And then he mixed willingness with happiness, he added lots of faith and he stirred it up well. Then he spread it over a span of a lifetime and he served it to each and every deserving person he met.” Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Not Just Parties, a GREAT PLACE TO Eat and Play ANYTIME! Getting Things Done Have you ever been out in the middle of a lake in a fishing boat and there weren’t any hooks in your tackle box? Or have you ever started to sew on a button and didn’t have a needle? Looking at the steps involved in getting something done -- what educators call “task analysis” -- is for all ages. Thinking ahead and planning what direction to take in accomplishing a task are skills we continue to develop throughout our lives. Teachers in lower elementary grades begin the process of helping students learn how to map out steps to complete a task. As they grow older, students benefit from these skills when they begin to write term papers, do research reports and study for exams. Breaking large tasks down into smaller, more manageable parts takes practice and patience. This skill can be taught and reinforced at home, too, whether it’s planting a vegetable garden or baking a batch of chocolate-chip cookies. Before your kids begin a craft project or chore, encourage them to ask, “What will

it take to get this done?” Here are additional questions to guide them through the process: --How much time will the project take? Discuss the time required to complete the task (including cleanup) and the time available. Will it be done before your piano lesson? --What equipment is needed? If you work in the yard, do you have garbage bags and brooms so you don’t have to run back and forth to the hardware store? For a craft project or recipe, check for ingredients and utensils on hand, such as the right-size pan, bowl and measuring cups. It’s hard to make two quarts of lemonade in a one-quart container! --Is an adult needed, and will that person be available? Many activities require extra strength or supervision, for safety reasons, when using sharp objects, a hot iron or a stove. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Low Sodium ... Or Not

Low-sodium foods are everywhere on grocery-store shelves, and it’s assumed those are the ones we should have. The British Journal The Lancet recently set off a firestorm when it reported the result of research: High sodium intake is bad for those with high blood pressure, increasing cardiovascular events and death. (OK, that’s no surprise.) However ... low sodium intake is bad for those with or without high blood pressure and is associated with cardiovascular events and death. To read it again: Very-low sodium intake can cause cardiovascular events and death, whether or not you have high blood pressure. This was no small-population study. McMaster University in Canada and National University of Ireland-Galway looked at 130,000 people in 49 countries. Why is it that low intake of sodium can potentially be bad for us? We’re left mystified, because the study only mentions “adverse elevations of certain hormones.” A 2014 study with 101,000 participants in 17 countries found the same results, with an average amount of sodium being a lot less risky for cardiovascular events and death than very low sodium intake. This study got specific with the numbers (including a chart) and showed that the sodium intake suggested by the American Heart Association is very near the low-sodium level that causes problems. Then there’s the other study that shows that adequate sodium helps to fight infection. The firestorm started when the American Heart Association jumped in and called the Canada-Ireland study flawed and not valid. There are some illnesses and situations, however, that can be made worse by a low-sodium diet. What do we do with this conflicting information? We track our sodium intake and let our doctor know what it is, and we take the advice we’re given. We have to decide whom to trust. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

A World War II aircraft missing since July 1944 has been located in the Pacific. The Navy TBM1C Avenger was found by Project RECOVER, a group whose purpose is to use advanced high-tech methods to find missing-in-action Americans and aircraft. This aircraft, found in 85 feet of water in a lagoon near the Pacific Island of Palau, is only one of what might be dozens of U.S. planes and the remains of 80 American airmen, all hidden in the coral reefs and mangrove forests. The players in the Project RECOVER consortium are all big names: University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment; Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego; and the BentProp Project, a non-profit that’s been searching for MIAs for two decades. The technology used would be impressive even if the work isn’t being done on the ocean floor: scanning sonars, cameras, unmanned aerial systems, diver propulsion systems and underwater robots. They study currents and climate, historical data and firsthand accounts ... all to try to determine where a missing aircraft might be. In the past the group has located a downed Corsair fighter off Palau and a F6F Hellcat. It’s thought that there are 78,000 service members missing around the globe. Once information is discovered, it’s sent to the Department of Defense’s POW/MIA Accounting Agency so the families can be notified. Patrick Scannon, founder of the BentProp Project, part of Project RECOVER, describes his feelings about finally locating sites under the sea, “We’ve found the temporary tomb of Americans who’ve been missing in action for a long, long time. It is a privilege to be there ... so that the families can understand the fate of their loved ones.” To learn more, see bentprop.org, scripps.ucsd.edu/ projects/projectrecover and the film “Last Flight Home” on Amazon Prime.

* On July 2, 1839, Africans on the Cuban schooner Amistad rise up against their captors and seize control of the ship, which had been transporting them to a life of slavery on a sugar plantation in Cuba. Despite an international ban, Cuba continued to transport captive Africans until the 1860s.

* On June 28, 1862, Confederates posing as paying passengers make a daring capture of a commercial vessel on Chesapeake Bay. The conspirators planned to use the St. Nicholas to force other Yankee ships into Confederate service. * On June 30, 1900, four German boats burn at the docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, killing more than 300 people. The combination of old wood, strong winds and fuel-filled cargo sheds made the fire spread very rapidly. The fire was so large that it could be seen throughout the New York City area. * On June 27, 1940, the Germans set up two-way radio communication employing their most sophisticated coding machine, Enigma, to transmit information. The Germans considered Enigma unbreakable, but the British had broken the code as early as the German invasion of Poland. * On July 3, 1957, Nikita Khrushchev takes control in the Soviet Union by orchestrating the ouster of his opponents in the government. Khrushchev’s action delighted the United States, which viewed him as a more of a moderate.

* On July 1, 1979, the first Sony Walkman goes on sale for $150 after a breakneck development phase of only four months. The initial production run of 30,000 units looked overly ambitious when only 3,000 were sold the first month. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
