TIDBITS® TRAVELS TO DISNEYLAND by Kathy Wolfe

July 17 has been designated Disneyland Day, commemorating Opening Day of the original theme park on that day in 1955. In honor of the occasion, Tidbits studies up on this famous attraction in Anaheim, California. • A simple carousel was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s dream of Disneyland. Every Sunday, Disney took his two daughters to play at Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, and he sat on the park bench and watched. As he sat, he noted that most parents had nothing to do, and envisioned a place where both children and their parents could have fun together. • Disney’s ambition was for an eight-acre park called Mickey Mouse Park, located near his studios in Burbank. He planned themed areas throughout the park, and as his vision grew, he soon saw that eight acres was not nearly large enough. In 1953, Disney hired the Stanford Research Institute to search for a 100-acre site within the Los Angeles metropolitan area that was accessible by freeway. The company soon located a 160-acre orange grove in semi-rural Orange County near Anaheim. • Walt borrowed against his life insurance, sold his second house, and along with his brother Roy mortgaged everything they owned to raise the funds to build Disneyland. turn the page for more!

DISNEYLAND (continued): • ABC TV guaranteed a $6 million loan in exchange for Walt’s pledge to produce a weekly television show for them. • Construction began on July 21, 1954, with the park divided into five sections with 18 attractions. Main Street was at the front of the park, a turnof-the-century city Main Street. Adventureland was to be an “exotic tropical place,” complete with jungles. Frontierland would allow visitors to experience America’s pioneer days. The goal of Fantasyland was to “make dreams come true,” complete with princesses and flying fairies, while Tomorrowland offered a glimpse into the “marvels of the future.” The parking lot was designed with 15,167 spaces. Walt’s “magical little park” had turned into a $17 million theme park. • Just shy of a year later, Disneyland held its opening day. Its first day was to be limited to by-invitation-only guests for a preview of flying elephants, giant teacups, moon rockets, and a castle. Six thousand invitations were sent to Disney studio workers, the park’s construction workers, the press, and officials of company sponsors. Unfortunately, because of counterfeit tickets, an additional 22,000 people entered the park. • 53-year-old Walt Disney dedicated the park in the morning, then got busy with ABC filming a 90-minute live special, hosted by TV and movie personalities Art Linkletter, Ronald Reagan, and Bob Cummings, a broadcast that would be watched by 90 million people. • The day was plagued with mishaps, including a 7-mile (11.3-km) freeway backup. A heat wave caused temperatures to approach 110 degrees (43 C), accompanied by a plumbers’ strike which left most of the park’s water fountains and rest rooms out of order. Asphalt laid the night before became soft and women’s shoes sunk into the tar. A gas leak temporarily closed Fantasyland. Yet nothing could stop the opening to the public the following day.

790-992-5321 1-800-359-4303 Finding a Pet Sitter

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two Corgis, but my job as a nurse is demanding with long hours, and sometimes I don’t get home to see them for over a day. My sister has been great, dropping in to feed and walk them, but her work hours are changing soon. I have to get a pet sitter, but I have no idea where to start. -- Sara in Dothan, Alabama DEAR SARA: Set aside some time and start doing research on pet sitters in your area, as well as reading up on common services they offer. And ask around at work and anywhere else you socialize: Word-of-mouth recommendations are valuable. Pet sitters differ from dog walkers in that they go above and beyond a walk. They spend time in your home with the dogs -- from 30 minutes to overnight, if needed. They give them food and water, their daily medication, monitor their well-

being and provide any additional services that you agree upon. Some pet sitters offer long-term care in their home or facility if you’re away for several days. Questions to ask your potential pet sitter include: How much does the service cost? Is the sitter bonded/insured? How many other pets does he/she sit for? Will the business owner be the sitter or will an employee or contractor do the job? If so, how are they screened and trained? What happens if the sitter can’t make it? How does the sitter handle pet emergencies? You can find more extensive lists at Care.com and Pet Sitters International. Contact at least three sitters and compare prices and their responses to your questions. That will go a long way toward finding the best sitter for your Corgis.

DISNEYLAND (continued): • The entrance fee was $1.00, about $6.50 in today’s dollars. Roy Disney purchased ticket number one, but the first visitor to buy an entrance ticket was David MacPherson, ticket #2. Three attractions were free, but individual tickets for 18 rides ranged from 10 cents to 35 cents each. (Current ticket prices start at $95.00 per day.) • To avoid overcrowding, Walt Disney limited daily attendance to 20,000. It took just seven weeks for the park to welcome its one-millionth guest. Ten years after opening day, more than 50 million visitors had passed through the gates. • Shortly after Disneyland’s opening, Walt Disney was heard to say, “We’re gonna kick ourselves for not buying everything within a radius of ten miles around here.” • Disney’s weekly television series guaranteed to ABC in exchange for the $6 million loan debuted on October 27, 1955. • The Mark Twain riverboat seen in Frontierland sailed for the first time four days before the park opened, carrying guests at a private party celebrating Walt and Lillian Disney’s 30th wedding anniversary. On Opening Day, with the mad rush of uninvited guests, the ride became overcrowded and nearly capsized. It seems that no had established its maximum safe passenger capacity. • Since Disneyland’s opening day, folks have been getting motion sickness at the Mad Tea Party, a ride featuring 18 spinning tea cups. The inspiration for this attraction came from a scene in Disney’s 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland, when the Mad Hatter and friends celebrated with an Unbirthday Party. During the first two years after opening, the tea cups had no brakes or clutches, and there was no limit on how fast they could spin.

Pontiac Sign Q: I spotted a vintage Pontiac service sign in a shop in Wyoming. It reads “Pontiac Authorized Service” and is about 42 inches in diameter. I paid $150 for it. -- Ken, Salt Lake City, Utah A: If your sign is authentic, the circular design was used during the 1930s and ‘40s. According to “Picker’s Pocket-Guide to Signs” by Ed Bradley and published by Krause Books, if authentic, the sign often sells for about $3,300. If it is the real deal and you bought it for $150, you got an incredible bargain. Be aware, however, this sign has been reproduced. *** Q: During the 1980s, I received a copy of “White Trash Cooking” by Ernest Matthew Mickler and published by Ten Speed Press. Is it worth more than just a few dollars? -- Debra, West Memphis, Arkansas A: Mickler was a visual artist who was based in Key West, Florida, at the time he published his cookbook. The recipe collection attracted rave reviews, due in no small part because the dishes were genuine and reflected downhome cooking. “Trutti’s Fruited Porkettes” and “Lady Divine’s ChickenAsparagus Pie” are two of my favorite recipes from this cookbook, which is worth about $15. There is also “White Trash Cooking 2: Recipes for

Gatherin’s,” which was published in 1988. *** Q: I have a cookie jar marked “Holiday Designs USA.” I can’t find anything about this company and hope you can help. -- Polly, Tulsa, Oklahoma A: Holiday Designs was founded in 1964 in Sebring, Ohio, and continues to operate to the present day. Although ownership changed in 1983, the name was retained. This company makes ceramic canister sets in addition to a line of cookie jars. Many of the pieces are unmarked or identified with paper labels. *** Q: Recently I discovered several dozen Budweiser menu sheets from a saloon/restaurant owned by my family during the early 1930s. The sheets feature an old logo not currently used, and I wonder if they have any value. -- Jean, Corrales, New Mexico A: Although your menu sheets are vintage and do seem interesting, they are probably worth only about $5 each. by Samantha Weaver * It was beloved 20th-century American dancer, singer and actor Fred Astaire who made the following sage observation: “The higher up you go, the more mistakes you are allowed. Right at the top, if you make enough of them, it’s considered to be your style.”

* If you’re of a certain age, you may remember the popular cartoon “Far Side,” by Gary Larson. You may not realize, however, that this daily chuckle influenced science as well as humor. In a 1982 drawing, Larson dubbed the spikes at the end of a stegosaurus’s tail the “thagomizer” -- which is what paleontologists call the spikes today. * If you write the word “suns” upside down, it still says “suns.” * This election season might be a good time to resurrect the word “flapdoodler.” During Victorian times, any annoyingly boastful or self-righteous person was considered to be a flapdoodler. * In Britain in the early 2000s, dead hedgehogs started turning up with their heads stuck in McFlurry cups. It seems that the little creatures would stick their heads in to get to the remains of the discarded treat, then they’d be unable to get out and would starve to death. In response, in 2006 McDonald’s changed the design of the McFlurry cups to be more hedgehog-friendly. * If you’re planning a road trip to the Pacific Northwest, keep in mind that in Oregon it’s against the law to test your endurance while driving a car. * You might be surprised to learn that Helen Keller, probably best known as the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree, was one of the first members of the American Civil Liberties Union. *** Thought for the Day: “I want people to talk to one another no matter what their difference of opinion might be.” -- Studs Terkel (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com DISNEYLAND (continued):

• Although the flying Dumbo elephants are a longtime favorite at Disneyland, they weren’t there on Opening Day. The original 10 elephants, based on Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo, didn’t debut until three months after the park opened. When former U.S. President Harry S. Truman visited Disneyland in 1957, he declined a ride on the revolving pachyderms. It wasn’t due to motion sickness – the Democrat didn’t want to associate with an elephant, the symbol of the Republican Party. One of the original Dumbo’s can be viewed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. • The Matterhorn bobsleds were also not an original Disneyland feature. The steel roller coaster ride opened on June 14, 1959, the same day the Monorail and the Submarine Voyage made their debut. Walt Disney conceived the idea while in the Alps of Switzerland filming Third Man on the Mountain. Inspired by the beauty of the Matterhorn, he sent a postcard of the mountain to his Disneyland architect Vic Greene with the words, “Vic, build this. Walt.” The park’s mountain was built to 1/100th scale of the original, 147 feet (44.8 m) versus the 14,700 feet (4,480 m) of the original. • The Submarine Voyage was open from 1959 until 1998, and simulated an undersea voyage through coral reefs, mysterious caves, and a graveyard of sunken ships. A portion of the ride imitated the 1958 voyage of the nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus as it sailed under the Arctic Ocean’s polar ice cap. From 1965 to 1967, female employees dressed in mermaid costumes sunbathed and performed synchronized swimming stunts in the lagoon surrounding the attraction, receiving $1.65 per hour for their efforts. After several complained of health issues related to the subs’ diesel exhaust fumes, this feature was discontinued.

UNUSUAL ANIMALS: KANGAROOS Let’s get hopping by taking a look at the kangaroo, the most common member of the marsupial group. • Marsupials are distinctive in that they carry their young around in pouches. Besides kangaroos, the group includes Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and pademelos. Although kangaroos give live birth, the gestation period is very short, only 21 to 38 days, but as soon as the offspring is born (up to four at one time), they climb from the birth canal into the pouch where the mother’s mammary glands are located. There they will continue to develop for several months. At birth, the tiny hairless kangaroo is smaller than a bee, ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 inches (5 to 25 mm) in size. • The four different species of kangaroos all reside in Australia – the red kangaroo, the eastern, the western gray, and the antilopine kangaroo. The red kangaroo is the largest, as well as the largest of all marsupials. Its length from head to rump is between 3.25 and 5.25 feet (1.0 and 1.6 m), with the tail adding another 40 inches or so (101.6 cm). Its weight can reach 200 lbs. (90 kg.). The musky-rat kangaroo measures just 8 inches (20.3 cm) long, weighing just 12 oz. (340 grams). Its tail contributes another 6 inches (15.2 cm). • Of course, the most familiar characteristic is their method of transportation – hopping! They are the only large animals that do so. One hop usually measures a distance of 15 feet (7 m) and kangaroos have the ability to jump up to three times their height, yet the red kangaroo can leap an amazing 25 feet (8 m) up to 10 feet (3 m) in the air.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 KANGAROOS (continued): • The kangaroo’s top speed can reach close to 40 mph (60 km/hr), with normal “cruising” speed about 15 mph (25 km/hr). In addition to their strong hind legs, they also use their muscular tail as a means of pushing off the ground. • Oddly enough, kangaroos can only move their back legs together at the same time and are incapable of moving them individually. In fact, if one leg is seriously injured, the kangaroo will probably die because it cannot move about freely. However, when a kangaroo is swimming, it can kick each leg independently. • The habitat of kangaroos varies by species. The tiny musky-rat kangaroo beds down in little nests in Queensland’s rainforests. Gray kangaroos like Australian and Tasmanian forests, while the antilopine likes the eucalyptus woodlands. Their diet consists of grasses, flowers, leaves, ferns, moss, and the occasional insect. Their digestive system is like that of a cow, regurgitating their food and re-chewing it before digesting it. • Kangaroos don’t live very long in the wild, only about four to six years. In captivity, their lifespan increases to upwards of 20 years. They have poor eyesight, with a large number hopping about completely blind. • Do you know your kangaroo lingo? The adult male can be called by three names, a buck, boomer, or jack. The females are known as does, flyers, or jills. The youngsters are referred to as joeys, and a group of roos is called a mob or troop, usually numbering 50 or more.

MORE DISNEY FACTS Sleeping Beauty Castle is based on Bavaria, Germany’s 19th-century Neuschwanstein Castle. Main Street, U.S.A. featured Merlin’s Magic Shop from Opening Day until 1983. A 15-year-old teen named Steve Martin got his first job there in 1960, where he remained for three years. The comedian credits his employment there as helping him developing his performance skills. The term “animatronics” was coined in 1963 when Disneyland’s Polynesian-themed Enchanted Tiki Room opened, filled with 225 robotic singing, talking, and dancing birds. Since May of 1966, visitors to Disneyland’s Fantasyland have been taking a boat ride through “It’s a Small World,” an attraction with a world-brotherhood theme and a song that most have trouble getting out of their brain. Singing and dancing dolls are dressed in native garb of each nation. The attraction had its debut on April 22, 1964 at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, and was shipped to Disneyland at the Fair’s conclusion. Walt Disney kept his chain-smoking habit out of the public eye, never allowing himself to be photographed with a cigarette. He also never smoked around children. After feeling poorly for several months, in November of 1966, he entered the hospital for leg and neck pain. It was a busy time for Disney, with construction for Florida’s Walt Disney World having already begun. Disney was quickly diagnosed with lung cancer, and passed away just six weeks later at age 65. It would be nearly five more years until the Florida theme park was completed.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com MORE DISNEY FACTS (continued): • Prior to 1985, during the off-season, Disneyland was closed every Monday and Tuesday. Since then, it has been open daily, year round, with the exception of the national day of mourning following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, following the severe 1994 Northridge earthquake, and in 2001 at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. • The boat ride through the “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction was personally supervised by Walt Disney. He had originally envisioned it as a walk-through wax museum, but after the success of “It’s a Small World’s” boat concept, he adjusted his designs. “Pirates” was the last ride Walt Disney would be involved with. It was under construction when he passed away and opened in 1967, three months after his death. A new section of the park, New Orleans Square, was built at a cost of $15 million, ironically the same cost as the real Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The cost of the Pirates attraction came in at $8 million. The Spanish-style building was built with a 3,000 square foot apartment on the second floor, intended for entertaining and relaxing by Walt and his brother Roy. Following Walt’s death, the space never served its original purpose. • The Disney-produced Pirates of the Caribbean film series, based on the theme park’s attraction, began in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. Three more films followed, with the series grossing over $3.7 billion worldwide.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Green Nail Syndrome Is Not Easy to Treat

DEAR DR. ROACH: For the past four months, I have had an infection around the cuticle of my right index finger. There is green coloration under the nail near the cuticle, and the nail grew rather deformed. I am a gardener and a homemaker, so I tend to wash my hands often. The urgent-care doctor I saw prescribed clindamycin and mupirocin cream. I also was told to soak my finger twice a day. My family doctor took a culture and, because she did not know if I had a fungus or an infection, prescribed Lamisil and levofloxacin. She also recommended saltwater or peroxide soaks twice daily. The culture showed pseudomonas as the cause of the infection. With no improvement, I saw an orthopedic doctor. He told me to continue the soaking and the mupirocin cream. On my second visit, he lanced the area between the cuticle and the nail bed. There was improvement, but the symptoms soon return. The orthopedic doctor spoke of removing the nail as a possible solution to clearing up the infection. Is this my next step, or is there something else I can do? -- P.B. ANSWER: It sounds as though you have the aptly named “green nail syndrome,” which is caused by the bacteria you mention, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and which often is complicated by a paronychia, an infection along the side of the nail. Your orthopedic surgeon is quite right that sometimes the nail needs to be removed; however, many people can avoid that unpleasant procedure (I had to perform it once) with ciprofloxacin (the best oral antibiotic against pseudomonas), antiseptic soaks and by keeping the hands meticulously dry, using gloves and even using a hairdryer to dry the nails after soaking or cleaning. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 67-year-old male who has had mild to moderate psoriasis for the past seven years or so. I have been avoiding the very effective biological drugs because of the scary possible side effects. Instead, I use anti-itch topical creams and lotions, some with cortisone. In researching the topic, I ran across a treatment called Fumaderm that is available in Germany, but I have never heard of it being used in the U.S. -- C.S. ANSWER: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can range from annoying to life-threatening in severity. Psoriasis and its common complication, psoriatic arthritis, together are a highly destructive arthritis that often requires powerful treatment: biologic agents, like adalimumab (Humira) or etanercept (Enbrel). These do have the possibility of serious side effects, such as reactivation of tuberculosis. Fumaderm has been used in Germany for 19 years with a generally good safety record. There have been reports of a disease, PML, caused by brain virus, associated with Fumaderm, although it isn’t clear whether the Fumaderm predisposed the individuals to develop this infection. No medicine is free of the possibility of side effects, and treatment for psoriasis should be appropriate for the degree of severity of the illness. If you are doing well enough with your current treatment, I wouldn’t recommend trying a treatment with a higher risk of serious side effects. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. The New Villains I think I remember a time when letting your little kid win was the correct and right thing to do. Now, thanks to PlayStation and Xbox, it is pretty much impossible to beat them. Over the holidays my nephew showed me his new game, NBA whatever. “Cool,” I thought. Well ... it was more than just cool. It was a “mind-bending” experience. I’m not going to date myself, but Blip was our Game Boy, and our basketball game was decided by the guy who could hit the most unmissable corner threes. His game was better than anything I’d ever seen. “Let’s play!” he says. “Sure,” says me. “What team do you want to be?” Without hesitating, I say the Knicks -- my least favorite, favorite team. (He usually picks the Philadelphia teams, so I always begin a video game with the better team.) After messing around with the uniform selection for, oh, about 20 minutes, he picks his team. “I pick Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kareem, Bird and Tim Duncan,” he replies, before handing me a controller with 20 different knobs, levers and buttons. “Good luck!” So the little runt, formerly known as my great little nephew, proceeds to trounce me. Every once in a while, I get Carmelo Anthony to drive to the hoop uncontested, but it ends up as a travel because I have no earthly idea how to make him let go of the ball. “Wanna play again?” Fact is, I can’t blame him. On long plane flights I like to play MLB Manager, and I always cheat by choosing the team with the first draft pick and trade until I have an outfield consisting of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth (Ted Williams at DH), and a starting rotation of Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, Cy Young and Greg Maddux. I get upset when we don’t win 140 regular season games. But sometimes my team gets swept by the St. Louis Browns in the World Series. It happens. Herb Brooks used to say that “all-star teams don’t work.” This observation, while mostly true, has been disproven by the NBA Olympic “Dream Team” concept, but we get the point, and besides, it’s different when it comes to individual leagues. Every year, the New York Yankees field an All-Star team on paper, and they don’t (usually) win. Then there’s the curious case of Kevin Durant. Fans in Oklahoma City are inconsolable -they’ve lost the face of their franchise ... the only superstar they’ve known since their inception. Where is he going? He’s going to join Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to form what will be, in all likelihood, the greatest team of all-time. We’ve seen this before (Miami Heat), and you know, they probably won’t win every game. My only question is, how come Oakland has all this money? What is wrong with the Knicks? My advice to Oklahoma City and all the other franchises struggling to keep pace is to look at this another way: You didn’t lose a player, the entire league found a new villain. Easy Homemade Dough

This dough recipe is the perfect base for any kind of pizza. 3 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons plus 1/4 cup olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast 1 1/2 cup lukewarm water 1. In stand mixer with paddle attachment, mix flour, 3 tablespoons oil, salt and yeast on low speed until combined. Add water. Mix on medium 1 minute. Increase speed to mediumhigh. Mix 5 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, brush bottom and sides of large light-colored rimmed baking sheet (approximately 12 by 18 inches) with remaining 1/4 cup oil. Pour dough (it will be very soft) onto oiled sheet, and rub all over with excess oil. Gently stretch dough to fill most of baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap; let stand in warm spot 2 hours. 3. Remove plastic. With hands, stretch and push dough until it covers bottom of pan. Top as desired. Pizzeria dough hack: Buy a 1 1/2-pound ball of dough from your local pizzeria. Brush your rimmed baking sheet with 1/4 cup olive oil before placing dough on pan and stretching it to fit. Top right away (no need to let dough rise), but if it springs back on you, let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes, then try again. What happens when your friends all retire and you don’t? “Women Still at Work: Professionals Over Sixty and On the Job,” by Elizabeth F. Fideler, explores why senior women are still working and what happens when we do. Fideler gathered her research from both surveys and in-depth interviews, comparing generations, economic climates and preferences. Why are senior women still working? We enjoy what we’re doing. We’re making contributions. We need the money or the health insurance that comes with the job. We’re trying to beef up our retirement nest egg. We get more out of being engaged on a daily basis with real challenges. What happens when our friends retire and we don’t? We miss opportunities for socializing, unless we take matters in hand and organize time together when we are available. We sometimes have to keep repeating answers to the question about why we’re still working, and try to explain the sense of accomplishment we get from continuing to work. This can be wearing. Instead, when the friendships no longer fit, look for socializing opportunities in new areas where you don’t have to justify what you’re doing. There is one bonus to continuing to work, despite the push to retire. Studies have shown that retiring early can shorten one’s life, especially if we’ve worked for years. Another study of 6,000 participants showed that we’ll have a 15 percent lower risk of death if we maintain a purpose in our life and keep working. Anxiety and depression can be a result of retiring when we really don’t want to. If you’re considering retiring, take a look at this book before you do. Go online to Amazon.com and you’ll find it in paperback, hard copy and for Kindle. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Operation Gratitude

Answers 1. Ryne Sandberg of the Chicago Cubs, in 1990. 2. Frank Taveras (1977) and Omar Moreno (1978-79). 3. It was 1963. 4. Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond started the 1967 AllStar Game. 5. The Boston Bruins crossed the 3,000-win mark in 2016. 6. London, in 1948. 7. Tiger Woods (2003, ‘04, ‘08) and Geoff Ogilvy (‘06, ‘09).

Operation Gratitude needs our help. Carolyn Blashek, founder of OpGrat, recently sent out a request for funds to ship 3,272 more care packages to troops currently deployed in dangerous areas. It costs $15 to send one box, so you can do the math. It needs a lot of dollars. Since its founding in 2003, Operation Gratitude has sent 1.5 million care packages to our activeduty men and women who are deployed overseas. Donations of items for the boxes are given by large corporations and small companies, individuals and groups. The boxes always contain excellent treats valued at nearly $100, and might include videos, flash drives, candy, books, toiletries, games and more. Each one contains letters from home. Sometimes there might be a key to a brand-new vehicle that will be waiting when the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine gets home. Additionally, OpGrat now sends packages to first responders, wounded heroes, new recruits and more. But the postage ... that’s the big problem. There are no government handouts, no discounts from the Post Office. It’s all on us to help with that. OpGrat always does a big push at the holidays, and the goal this year is to send out 250,000 packages as they close in on the 2 million mark. If you can help out with the cost of mailing a couple of boxes, or even just a few dollars, send a check to: Answers 1. The White House 2. Two (six feet) 3. Fear of fire 4. John Forsythe 5.
