RAYS (continued): • Famous chef Rachael Ray grew up in the restaurant business with restaurant manager parents. But her first job in New York City was working at the candy counter at Macy’s, where she worked her way up to manager of the fresh foods department. It was while working at a gourmet market in Albany, New York, that she conceived the idea of “30 Minute Meals” for customers who were unenthusiastic about cooking. The local television station asked her to host a weekly segment during the newscast, which led to a best-selling book and a contract with the “Today Show.” Five years later, she debuted her own Emmy Award-winning talk show. • Sugar Ray Robinson is ranked one of history’s greatest professional boxers, with 108 knockouts in 200 pro bouts. His 91-fight unbeaten streak ranks third longest in boxing history. Muhammad Ali referred to Robinson as “the king, the master, my idol.” Sugar Ray wasn’t really a Ray at all, but was born Walker Smith, Jr. in 1921. When he retired from boxing in 1965, his record was 173 – 19 – 2, and he had never been physically knocked out in a fight. He was also was owner of a fashionable restaurant, Sugar Ray’s, a hangout of Frank Sinatra, Joe Louis, Lena Horne, and Jackie Gleason. Unfortunately, at the time of his retirement, Robinson had spent all of the $4 million in career earnings. He appeared in a few minor film roles, but health problems plagued him, and he passed away from complications of diabetes and Alzheimers Disease at age 67.

When Is Best Time to Train Your Dog? PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve tried to work in obedience training with my puppy, “Spaetzle,” during her morning and evening walks, because I read somewhere that this is the most efficient way to do it. But she doesn’t seem to pay attention, and I feel like we’re not getting very far. Am I doing something wrong? -- Don in Chapel Hill, North Carolina DEAR DON: It’s not that you’re doing anything wrong, it’s that maybe training during walks isn’t right for Spaetzle. Observe your dog throughout the day for a few days. Are there times when she appears to be more receptive to your commands? More responsive? Are there times when she is really hyper and times when she is very relaxed? Take note of these behaviors and the time of day when they seem more common. Then, adjust your
behavior training to take place during these times and see how she responds. Some dogs are extremely focused on certain core tasks, like, “Hey, it’s time to eat. I’m pretty sure it’s time to feed me. I need to eat. I can’t think of anything else until you feed me!” Or, when Spaetzle is out for her walk, she may be focused on finding the perfect places to pee or poop. That’s where her attention is going. So more complex commands may go right past her. You can work on simpler behavioral training and commands throughout the day. During walks, of course, is the best time to train her to heel, sit and stay. At treat times, teach a command before giving a treat. Train when the opportunity presents itself. Most of all, be patient and encourage her, always. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

RAYS (continued): • Sugar Ray Robinson was followed by another pro boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard, born in 1956. Leonard’s mother named him after her favorite singer, Ray Charles. Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in the ring and was named the 1980s Boxer of the Decade. His career included eight world titles. His first big victory was the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship in 1973. Leonard was chosen for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team, a team that is considered the greatest boxing team in the Olympics’ history. After capturing a gold medal that year, Leonard intended to study business administration at the University of Maryland. However, financial difficulties forced him into the professional arena, and in 1977 he made his professional debut, being paid $40,044 for the evening’s work. Leonard retired in 1982, then made a comeback, retired again in 1984, followed by another comeback. The action was repeated in 1987 and 1991, with his final retirement in 1997, following the only time he was ever knocked out. He has been a TV boxing analyst for ESPN, a television and movie actor, and contestant on Dancing with the Stars. He is also deeply involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. • Singer-songwriter Ray Stevens is known for his humorous novelty hits such as “Gitarzan,” “Ahab the Arab,” and “The Streak.” Born Harold Ray Ragsdale, Stevens grabbed five Grammy nominations and a win in 1970 for his serious recording “Everything is Beautiful.” But his most famous hit is “The Streak,” Number One on the charts in 1974, a song about that decade’s fad of running nude in public. Those familiar with the song will recall its famous line, “Don’t look, Ethel!”

Grandmother’s Vases Q: My grandmother was raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts. In 1909, when she got married, she received three vases crafted by William Henry Grueby, a Boston potter. Although I am not all that familiar with pottery from this period, I think all three are in the Arts and Crafts style. Are Grueby pieces worth keeping? -- Ramona, Augusta, Maine A: According to Schroeder’s Antiques Price Guide published by Collector Books, your vases could be quite valuable. William Henry Grueby began working with tiles when he was about 15 years old. He later founded the Grueby Faience Company in Boston and began experimenting with art pottery. He developed glazes in blue, gray, yellow, brown and cucumber green. What made his glazes unique is they were executed in soft shades without gloss. In 1900, Grueby exhibited his work at the Paris Exposition Universelle, where he won three gold medals. Grueby’s pottery was hand-thrown and handdecorated. While making art pottery, he also continued to design and produce tiles. I can’t find any evidence that his art pottery was made after about 1910. Depending on the style of your vases, they could be worth several thousand dollars each.

For example, a six-sided vase with leaves in green recently sold for $2,000. Some of his others have sold for even more. I suggest you hire the services of a good certified personal property appraiser and get them documented for insurance purposes. *** Q: I am enclosing pictures and need you to identify and tell me what these two pans were used for. I bought them at auction about 35 years ago and have never seen others like them. I also need a price range value. –- Linda, Darlington, Indiana A: Your question is a little like showing me a picture of a brick and asking me what kind of structure it came from. Your pans could have been used to prepare food on a working farm. My grandmother had several such pans, which she used when preparing apples for cider and grapes for juice. I don’t make appraisals, and since it is not known where your pans were made or by whom, I can’t provide any additional information. by Samantha Weaver * It was notorious American self-described “gonzo journalist” Hunter S. Thompson who made the following sage observation: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a ride!’” * Spread out your fingers as far as you can, then measure the distance between the end of your thumb and the opposite side of your palm. That distance is known as your shaftment. * Roto-Rooter, the plumbing and drain service company, conducts an annual survey of its technicians to find out what sorts of things are being found in customers’ pipes. Among the more interesting items over the years have been Barbies, false teeth, TV remotes, alligators and six-packs of beer. * Over the past 100 years, the life expectancy of the average American has risen from 47 to 78. * Those who study such things say that, on a percapita basis, Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than citizens of any other country in the world. * Railroads in Japan have a persistent problem: turtles. It seems the reptiles have a habit of wandering onto the tracks, and many of them get stuck between the switching rails. This prevents the switches from closing properly, causing train accidents. To address the problem, the West Japan Railway Company consulted with the Suma Aqualife Park in Kobe; together, they created tunnels under the tracks to allow the turtles to pass freely without endangering railway passengers -or themselves. *** Thought for the Day: “English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment, and education -sometimes it’s sheer luck, like getting across the street.” -- E.B. White (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com RAYS (continued): • Businessman Ray Kroc didn’t actually found the McDonald’s hamburger chain, but he did build it into the world’s most successful fast food restaurant. Kroc had been involved in many different undertakings before becoming involved in the hamburger business in his 50s. At age 15, he lied about his age to begin serving as a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I. It was here he met Walt Disney, who would remain his lifelong friend. After the war he became a paper cup salesman, a pianist, and a radio DJ. Kroc met the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mac, when he was working as a milkshake machine salesman. Peddling a machine that mixed five shakes at a time, he sold several machines to the brothers’ restaurant chain. The ambitious Kroc worked as a franchising agent for them in exchange for a percentage of profits, and at age 53, he became president of the corporation. At age 59, he was the owner, buying out the brothers for $2.7 million. When he died at age 81, McDonald’s was an $8 billion corporation with 7,500 locations in 31 countries. Not bad for a man without a high school diploma! With a personal worth of $500 million, Kroc was also the owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team for the final 10 years of his life. Time magazine included Ray Kroc in their list of the “Top 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.” Today, the chain has 36,000 locations in more than 100 countries. • “I guess to be an entrepreneur you have to have a large ego, enormous pride, and an ability to inspire others to follow your lead.” - Ray Kroc

UNUSUAL ANIMALS: RAYS In keeping with the theme of “rays,” Tidbits goes underwater to gather info on the beautiful and unusual creatures known as rays. • The scientific classification Batoidea includes the cartilaginous fish known as rays. The flat-bodied rays have a boneless skeleton consisting of a tough elastic material. The flat body enables the ray to conceal itself while seeking out its prey. The ray stirs up the sand and hides beneath it. • About 600 species of rays exist, with varying kinds found in every ocean around the world, from the warm tropics to the freezing cold waters in the Arctic. Many species are closely related to the shark. The largest species is the manta ray, with its central disc measuring up to 29.5 feet (9 m) wide. It also has the largest brain of all fish. More than 300 rows of tiny teeth line the lower jaw. A manta consumes about 60 lbs. (27.2 kg) of plankton and fish every day. Found only in the warmer tropical waters, it can live for 25 years. It is completely harmless to humans. • A ray’s mouth is on the underside of its body, and its eyes are on top. Because the ray can’t use its eyes to seek its prey, electro-sensors help them detect electrical charges emitted by the clams, oysters, shrimp, crabs, and mussels it feeds on. • The smallest ray is a tiny electric ray measuring just 4 inches (10 cm) across and weighing only 1 lb. (0.5 kg). • Electric rays are capable of producing an electric charge from 8 to 220 volts. They hide in the sand, waiting for their prey, which they stun and capture. The genus Torpedo, one of the 69 species of electric rays, gave us the name for the warfare device known as the torpedo, a word that translates from the Latin torpere, meaning to be stiffened or paralyzed. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 RAYS (continued): • There are no reported human fatalities from electric rays. As early as 46 AD, a Roman physician recorded the use of torpedo fish for the treatment of headaches and gout. • Stingrays have a barbed stinger measuring about 14 inches (35 cm) in length on their tail used for self-defense. Two grooves contain venom, concentrated under a thin layer of skin. They are not hostile creatures and don’t aggressively attack humans, and normally swim away; however, they will sting if stepped on. A sting usually causes pain, swelling, and muscle cramps, but is very rarely life-threatening to humans. Usually, the stinger breaks off in the wound, and surgery is sometimes required to remove it. • It’s not unusual for large stingrays to reach a weight of 790 lbs. (358.3 kg). Baby stingrays are born fully developed, emerging as a little adult, and begin to take care of themselves as soon as they’re born. • Stingrays prefer warmer, shallower, near-theshore waters. • In ancient Greece, the venom of stingrays was used by dentists as an anesthetic. • The death of wildlife expert Steve Irwin occurred in 2006 when a stingray barb pierced him in the chest, puncturing his thoracic wall, while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary film. • A group of stingrays is known as a “fever.”

NON-CELEBRITY TWINS
We’ve all heard of celebrity twins like the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott, and Barbara and Jenna Bush. But how about those sets in which one is famous and the other is not? In honor of Twins’ Days Festival, August 5 – 7, Tidbits focuses on well-known folks with a non-famous twin. • Brazilian model, actress, and producer Gisele Bundchen is the world’s highest-paid model in the world, and the 16th richest woman in the entertainment industry. Bundchen, worth an estimated $360 million, married New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2009. What about her equally-beautiful twin sister Patricia? Patricia, five minutes younger than her sister, tried modeling for a short time, but prefers to stay in the background serving as the manager of Gisele’s career. Gisele claims she owes her success to Patricia’s exceptional management skills. • Vin Diesel is best known for his work in “The Fast and the Furious” film series. Raised in New York City, Diesel was born Mark Sinclair Vincent, and has a twin brother named Paul Vincent. Paul remains out of the spotlight, working as a film editor, and is rarely photographed in public. • Actress Scarlett Johansson, star of “The Avengers,” has a twin brother Hunter, three minutes younger than his celebrity sister. Hunter did appear with Scarlett in the 1996 film “Manny & Lo” at age 12, but since then has been out of the limelight, with the exception of being listed in People magazine’s list of “Hot Bachelors” in 2008. Hunter seems more interested in politics, having worked as a community and campaign organizer. He also joined his sister in a fundraiser for victims of 2012’s Hurricane Sandy.”

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com NON-CELEBRITY TWINS (continued): • Iowa native Ashton Kutcher got his big acting break in 1998, landing a role in “That 70s Show.” While Ashton weighed in at 10.5 lbs. (4.76 kg) at birth, his fraternal twin Michael was a much smaller 4 lbs. (1.8 kg). Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three, and plagued with heart problems, Michael underwent a heart transplant at age 13. Today, in addition to serving as a spokesperson for an advocacy organization that researches cerebral palsy, Michael, who has a business management and marketing degree, is in the business of selling retirement plans. • Swedish-born actress Ingrid Bergman of “Casablanca” fame gave birth to twin daughters Isabella and Isotta Ingrid Rossellini in Rome in 1952. Isabella followed in her mother’s acting footsteps at age 24, along with a modeling career. Her fraternal twin Isotta chose an academic career, and became a professor of Italian literature at New York University. • We know Kiefer Sutherland for his role as Jack Bauer on the hit TV series “24”. Born in London to actor Donald Sutherland and his wife Shirley Douglas, Kiefer has a twin sister, Rachel, who is also involved in the entertainment industry. Rachel works behind the scenes in post-production and as a casting assistant for movies and television. • Several celebrities were twins for a very short time, with siblings who died at birth, including Elvis Presley who had a twin brother Jesse. Others include Andy Garcia, Liberace, and Ed Sullivan.

By Keith Roach, M. D, The Mysterious Rise in Meat Allergies DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that there is a sudden surge in people coming down with severe meat allergies. Is there any information as to why, after years of eating red meat, you suddenly can become extremely allergic? -- E.V. ANSWER: Meat allergies are uncommon; however, there has been a recent surge of meat allergies due to tick bites. I have read that over 5,000 cases of meat allergy have been estimated in the United States, mostly in the Southeast. The allergy is most often caused by a bite of the Lone Star tick, which carries the carbohydrate alpha-gal. If introduced into the bloodstream, it can cause a reaction from eating meat, especially beef, pork and lamb. Interestingly, it is much more likely in people with blood types A and O. It isn’t yet clear if the allergy will be temporary or long-lasting, but it can be very severe, and people who develop this allergy should avoid meat and carry an epinephrine device in case of exposure. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A few days ago, I heard a report on breast cancer recurrence. I had cancer in my left breast in 1995, and on my right side in 2003. What are your thoughts on the subject? There is no history of breast cancer in my family. -- P.M. ANSWER: Breast cancer sometimes runs in families, but 70 percent to 80 percent of women with breast cancer have no family history. Once a woman has had breast cancer, she is at higher risk for developing a second breast cancer. Survivors of breast cancer should get regular physical exams and mammograms. A team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University recently published a study promising that in the near future, a new type of blood test may be able to identify DNA from breast cancer cells and find recurrence much earlier than current methods. If confirmed, this would be a big relief to the many women (and a few men) with breast cancer at risk for recurrence. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address stem-cell treatment for a torn rotator cuff? My son is facing his second surgery for this problem and is considering stem-cell treatment instead. He had such terrible pain from surgery the first time. -- L.P. ANSWER: A torn rotator cuff is a common sports injury in athletes. Complete tears usually are repaired surgically. A new surgical technique is to inject the body’s own stem cells (obtained from the bone marrow) to help promote healing. It is too new of a technique for me to be able to compare it with standard surgical therapy, but the preliminary studies are very promising. I often have said that only an individual’s surgeon can decide the right surgical procedure, based on far more information than we could include in this column. It’s really true that you never trust anyone quite the way you trust your surgeon. There are surgeons who are using the stem-cell technique, and it would be reasonable to get a consultation with one of them. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. A Rose by Ichiro’s Name Pete Rose follows me on Twitter now, or at least he retweeted something I wrote about him, and that’s good enough for me. I’m also friends on Facebook with Jenny Mollen and Willie Nelson, and depending on which generation you talk to, nobody knows anyone I just talked about. (You can follow me too @sportingview ... and unlike here, I am a man of few words there.) In case you missed the past two or three decades, Pete Rose was a real son of a gun who hustled and played baseball with the sort of tenacity that only a few other players and marauding bands of Vikings could understand or match. He is Major League Baseball’s undisputed hit king. He is not in the Hall of Fame because he was banned from baseball for betting on baseball games, something every single baseball player has known not to do since the Taft administration. The guy completely blew it, yet the man persists to somehow remain in the news. How many other Hall of Fames can this guy be inducted to? It seems like every other week he is inducted into the Reds’ Hall of Fame, Cincinnati’s Hall of Fame, Ohio’s Hall of Fame, the guy down the street’s Hall of Fame ... Pokemon Go should make him one of their monsters because he has a statue or plaque in just about every major park in the Buckeye State. He has to have several hundred Rotary Club coffee mugs. Then along comes Ichiro Suzuki. By the time you read this, Ichiro will have reached the 3,000 hit mark in Major League Baseball. If you were to add up the hits he made in Japan with the hits he made here, mathematics show that he has more professional base hits than Pete Rose. On a slow news day, there are reputable news organizations that will make a case for Ichiro being the all-time hit king. That is, of course, totally preposterous. I know guys who bet on Wiffleball games ... sure, it takes them out of the running for Cooperstown, but they get paid, and I know guys who throw perfect games every time I’m not in the opposing team’s lineup. Does that make them pros, worthy of being compared to Koufax and Walter Johnson? Tony Lazzeri, the Hall of Fame second baseman for the Yankees (who completely disrespect him, by the way), once hit a kajillion home runs in the minor leagues. Is he the home run king? Ichiro is all class and truly, I love watching him play. He is a Hall of Famer, but he is not the hit king. That man is Pete Rose. This is probably not the last time I say this, but it’s good to forgive. It’s time for Pete Rose to enter the Hall or be allowed to participate in Old Timer’s or Cincinnati Wiffleball games. No offense to Ichiro, but it is well past time for our pastime to set the record straight once and for all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Syrupy Banana-Nut
French Toast Bake A great make-ahead brunch recipe. Serve with bacon or sausage and fruit salad. 6 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 5 large ripe bananas 1 long loaf French or Italian bread 6 large eggs 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup sliced almonds or coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans 1. In microwave-safe small bowl, heat butter in microwave oven on High for 1 minute or until melted. Stir sugar into butter until moistened. With fingertips, press sugar mixture onto bottom of 13by 9-inch glass baking dish. (It’s OK if mixture does not cover bottom.) Spread fruit over sugar mixture; top with bread slices, cut sides down. 2. In medium bowl, with whisk, beat eggs; whisk in milk, vanilla and cinnamon. Slowly pour milk mixture over bread; press bread down to absorb egg mixture. Sprinkle with nuts. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight. 3. Heat oven to 350 F. Remove plastic wrap from baking dish. Bake, uncovered, 45 to 50 minutes or until bread is golden brown and knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. TIP: If you don’t have bananas, substitute 3 to 4 very ripe pears or peaches (about 1 1/2 pounds), sliced; or 1 cup dried cherries, cranberries or raisins. Sticking to a healthy diet now may help with mobility as we age. So says a new study that looked at preventing or delaying a physical decline later. Continued physical function equates to continued independent living, so this study needs a close look. A portion of the Nurses’ Health Study looked at diet patterns of 54,762 women and compared their health to the Alternative Healthy Eating Index, checking in with them every four years between 1992 and 2008. Here’s what it learned: * Those with a healthy diet were less likely to develop physical impairments. * More fruit and vegetables; less sugared drinks, trans fats and sodium; and moderate intake of alcohol equated to reduced physical impairment later. * Foods with the biggest health impact were oranges, pears, apples, leaf lettuce and walnuts, although an overall healthy diet was more important than individual foods. The Nurses’ Health Study has been ongoing since 1976, and over the years it’s revealed a wealth of information about women’s health, courtesy of (so far) 275,000 participants. The Alternative Healthy Eating Index is a dietary guideline used by, among other things, the U.S. Department of Agriculture to monitor the quality of the American diet. The newest version, called the HEI-2010, gives each food value points. If you need help sorting out what constitutes a healthy diet (especially when it comes to portions), go online to choosemyplate.gov and look around. Did you know: A serving size of apples and oranges are not the same? Or that one slice of bread has the same value as a half cup of cooked pasta? Or that one egg and twelve almonds are equal? I didn’t. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Group Offers Real Help for Homeless Vets It’s not enough to say we have X number of homeless veterans on the street. Before there can be real solutions, we have to know why those veterans are out there, and specifically what they need. The Community Homelessness Assessment, Local Education and Networking Groups (aka CHALENG) is organized to bring together all those who can work to remove barriers for those homeless veterans. CHALENG has two goals: pair Department of Veterans Affairs service providers with those in the civilian community, and conduct surveys to identify the real needs of homeless veterans. Previous surveys have allowed the VA to pinpoint and then create programs to fill specific needs. A 2015 CHALENG survey of over 6,000 participants showed the following: * Needs that are generally being met for homeless veterans included medical services, testing for TB and HIV, services for psychiatric problems, substance-abuse treatment and case management. * The top two unmet needs were the same for both male and female veterans, with housing for registered sex offenders being first on the list, followed by child care. * Legal issues -- hurdles that many veterans can’t overcome on their own and the VA can’t provide -- include preventing an eviction, credit counseling, having a discharge upgraded, dealing with outstanding warrants and fines, child support and restoring a drivers license. * Veterans between the ages of 45-60 provided the bulge in the bell curve, with their numbers exceeding half the total. CHALENG has been able to bring together help from services for veterans families, dental programs, Housing and Urban Development housing help and legal programs. If you’re a veteran who is at risk of being homeless or needs services, there is help. Veterans and families can call 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877424-3838) to get VA services. You also can call the closest VA Medical Center. Don’t wait until your situation is dire. Address it early and ask for help. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
