The word “vegetable” comes from the Latin “vegetabilis” meaning growing and flourishing. To grow and flourish, eat your vegetables while digesting these vegetable facts! IS IT A FRUIT OR A VEGGIE? • A fruit is the mature ovary of a flower which contains a seed. A vegetable is any part of a plant which is not an ovary, such as a root, tuber, stem, or leaf. That means that tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, melons, peapods, avocado, and peppers are all fruits, not vegetables. If it’s got seeds in it, it’s a fruit. Even grains such as rice, wheat, and corn are technically fruits. Nuts are a fruit, too. It’s only our culture that has deemed anything sweet a fruit and anything not sweet a vegetable. • Many plants surround their seeds with a sweet flesh in order to encourage animals to eat it, thereby spreading the seeds. But plants need to hold onto their roots, leaves, and stems to survive, so there’s no reason to make those parts taste especially good. • Potatoes are the most popular vegetable in the U.S., followed by tomatoes (actually a fruit; see next page) and iceberg lettuce. • Most Americans eat one or two serving of fruits and veggies per day, whereas the recommended amount is five to six per day. TOMATOES AND TAXES • As the ripened ovary of a seed plant, the tomato is technically a fruit. The Tariff Act of 1883 levied a 10% tax on vegetables being imported while fruits entered the country duty-free. The Port Authority of New York classified tomatoes as vegetables which should be taxed, while a fruit importer argued that tomatoes were fruits, which were not taxed. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court declared that although tomatoes are botanically a fruit, they are more commonly used as a vegetable and should be considered a vegetable by law. The tax remained. SWEET POTATOES vs YAMS • Sweet potatoes are a member of the morning glory family, a vine. Potatoes are a member of the nightshade family, which is not a vine. Yams are from an African tropical vine that isn’t related to either the sweet potato or the potato but is related to lilies and grasses. Sweet potatoes have orange, red, or yellow skin and pale yellow flesh. True yams have a black or brown skin that looks like bark, and either white, purple, or red flesh. CARROTS AND EYESIGHT • It’s true that a vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness and that carrots contain vitamin A. But eating carrots won’t even begin to affect your eyesight unless your eyesight is bad specifically because of a vitamin A deficiency. Actually, carrots don’t exactly contain vitamin A; they contain carotene, which the liver converts to vitamin A. By the way: Carotene is the chemical which makes carrots orange. If you ingest enough carotene, it will turn your skin a yellow-orange color. Are baby carrots really babies? No, they are really just a thinstalked variety that is then cut into baby shapes. The first carrots that were grown, native to Afghanistan, were purple in color. Orange carrots later originated in Holland.

Read Tidbits® online @lovemytidbits.com Should Dogs Drink Tap Water?

DEAR RICH: That’s an excellent question, and one that all pet owners should consider. About 67 percent of the U.S. population receives municipal drinking water with added fluoride, according to a 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Opinions on fluoride and its effect on people and pets is an emotional issue, for understandable reasons. And that can leave pet owners even more confused about whether they should be protecting their pets from tap water. The Merck Manual of Pet Health details the effects of fluoride at toxic levels (for pets, that

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently you advised against using human toothpaste to brush dogs’ teeth because, for one thing, the fluoride in toothpaste is toxic to them. With this in mind, what are the ramifications of dogs drinking fluoridated water? -- Rich, via e-mail

can be as low as 1 milligram per kilogram). But that does not address fluoride in water. If municipalities fluoridate their water, it is diluted at 0.7 parts per million, which is very small -but many people are concerned that those small amounts can build up in one’s system over time, causing long-term health effects. For the short term, you can simply avoid giving pets tap water every day -- use filtered or bottled water instead. But bottled water has its own set of issues (such as plastic filling up landfills). How can you find out if your drinking water has added fluoride? Contact your local water utility provider and ask (the number is on your water and sewer bill). Or, check out the CDC’s My Water’s Fluoride website, which has fluoridation data supplied by 39 participating states.

VEGGIE FACTS & FIGURES • Onions make you cry because they are full of sulfuric chemicals, which irritate your tear ducts. Sulfur is the same gas which is produced by volcanoes when they erupt. • Yam comes from the African word “njam” meaning “to eat.” • The old French word “caboche” meaning “head” gave us our head of cabbage. Cabbage is one of the most nutritious vegetables, high in anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. • Corn is a member of the grass family. Each ear has an average of 800 kernels. • Cool as a cucumber? The inside of a cucumber can be 20 degrees cooler than the outside of a cucumber. • Asparagus spears can grow an inch a day in warm weather. • California grows 90% of the U.S. avocado crop. • Ripe red bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C by weight as citrus fruits. • A single tomato plant was once documented to have produced 16,897 tomatoes. • The original eggplant had a small white fruit that looked like an egg. The large purple eggplants are in the same family and bear the same name. • The average American eats about 126 lbs. (57 kg) of potatoes annually. • Romaine lettuce has more nutrients than any other kind of lettuce. The darker the leaf, the more nutritious the lettuce. • Coconut is actually a fruit. • Before the days of refrigerated trucks, loads of lettuce would be heaped with mounds of ice to preserve them while being shipped, hence the name “iceberg” lettuce. Jct. U.S. 35 and St. Rt. 327 • Jackson, OH 45640 740-288-9995 Uncle Wiggily Puzzles Q: I have a set of jigsaw puzzles featuring Uncle Wiggily that was given to me during the 1940s when I was a child. The set of three is complete and in excellent condition. I have been offered $50, but can’t decide if I should sell or keep the puzzles. -- Jerry, Pine Hills, Florida A: Uncle Wiggily was created in 1910 by Howard R. Garis, a syndicated newspaper columnist. Uncle Wiggily Longears was an elderly rabbit, complete with a tailcoat and top hat. His adventures originally appeared in the Sunday funny papers, but soon expanded to include story books, puzzles, cereal bowls and party games. Uncle Wiggily’s friends included Fuzzy Wuzzy, Sammie and Suzie Littletail, Grandpa Goosey Gander, Billy Wagtail, Jackie and Peetie Bow-Wow and a host of others. When I was about 7 and in bed with the measles, my grandmother brought me a book, “Uncle Wiggily Has the Measles.” I cherish it to this very day. Uncle Wiggily was my pal, and I thought he was swell. I still do. There were three puzzles issued in the same box, according to the “Official Hake’s Price Guide to Character Toys” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. According to Hake, the puzzles are worth in the $25-$100 range, depending

on condition and if complete. Should you sell them? Only you can determine that. *** Q: I have a letter and three telegrams sent by Theodore Roosevelt to Captain Charles L. Cooper in the spring and summer of 1898. The letter is dated July 18, 1898 and is signed by Roosevelt when he was the Chief Quartermaster in Denver, “Headquarters Department of the Colorado.” His full title was “Lt. Col. & D.Q.M. Gen’l U.S. Army, Chief Quartermaster.” The letter is requesting Capt. Cooper to furnish original correspondence regarding transportation of Major H.B. Hersey, 14 officers and 342 men from Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, to San Antonio. The three telegrams are dated May 4 and May 7, 1898. Do these documents have any value? -- Robert, McArthur, Ohio A: I recommend you contact Heritage Auctions, a company that specializes in the appraisal and sales of historic documents. Contact is 445 Park Ave., New York, NY 10022, and 212-486-3500. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

* Brides in ancient Rome carried sheaves of wheat, not bouquets of flowers. * Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, had a pet parrot with a questionable vocabulary. In fact, Poll (the pet in question) was so foul-mouthed (-beaked?) that it disrupted Jackson’s funeral. According to Rev. William Menefee Norment, who presided at the service, “Before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering, a wicked parrot that was a household pet got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as to disturb the people and had to be carried from the house.”

* Glass-bottom beer tankards were invented during medieval times. Evidently, some taverns were so rough that patrons felt the need to be able to see the other drinkers even when turning the mug bottoms-up. * Those who study such things say that when you’re sleeping, a quarter of all your blood is in your liver. * It’s pretty common knowledge that it’s the male seahorse, not the female, that gives birth to the young. Not many people realize, though, that a male seahorse can deliver a brood of a thousand or more babies in the morning, and then be pregnant again that night. *** Thought for the Day: “I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com VEGGIE FACTS & FIGURES

• Sweet potatoes have more vitamin A than any other vegetable. The cantaloupe is higher in vitamin A than any other fruit. • In the 1960s at Chicago’s Ambassador East Hotel, a major bash was held, during which one of the local celebrities was served a Bloody Mary with no swizzle stick to stir it with. He grabbed a celery stick from a vegetable tray and used that to stir his drink instead, leading to a new fad. • Jello introduced a new line of flavors intended for salads: mixed vegetable, tomato, and celery. No one bought. • It would take over 300 celery sticks to equal the average human’s daily ration of calories. • Artichokes are one of the oldest foods known to humans. Marilyn Monroe was the first official California Artichoke Queen in 1947. • Dietary fiber found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables is not found in animal products.

SPINACH MYTH

• In the 1930s a scientist studying the mineral properties of spinach accidentally misplaced a decimal point, leading researchers to believe that there was ten times as much iron in spinach as there actually is. The myth that spinach is extraordinarily high in iron still survives. Spinach has iron, but many foods, including soy beans, peas, beets, lima beans, lentils, liver, molasses, oysters, apricots, walnuts, and sunflower seeds have more. In order to get your requirement of iron from spinach alone, you’d have to eat twice your body weight of the stuff yearly. This would be a bad idea because spinach also contains oxalic acid, and ingesting that much oxalic acid could cause kidney stones. Boiling spinach will reduce the level of oxalic acid. Still, when Popeye started eating spinach, sales soared.

Amazing Animals HORSES • A horse can sleep either laying down or standing up. • Horses have larger eyes than any other land mammal. Because the eyes are located on the sides of their heads, they can see in nearly a full circle. • Horses can gallop at about 27 mph (44 kph) but the fastest recorded horse sprinted at 55 mph (88 kph). • A horse cannot vomit. • The teeth of a horse show the animal’s age. When the owner of a horse for sale says it’s a young animal, the buyer is wise to inspect the teeth in order to get that information “straight from the horse’s mouth.” • When horses are “rough-shod” they have shoes which have the ends of the nails sticking out. This gives the horse more traction, but it tears up the ground the animal travels over. When someone “rides rough-shod” over another person, they are trampling the ground beneath them without caring. • When a jockey is so far ahead of the rest of the horses in a race that he doesn’t even have to lift the reins anymore, he rises from his crouch over the horse’s withers and puts his hand on the pommel of the saddle, thereby winning the race “hands down.” • Nervous race horses are sometimes given goats as companions in their stalls, which helps calm them down. Gamblers sometimes steal the goat of a horse that they want to do badly in a race. Today we bother other people when we “get their goat.” • When early day pioneers reached the Palouse River in Idaho, they found the Indians there riding a particular type of spotted horse. They called them “Palousez” horses, which are now known as Appaloosa. (continued next page)

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 HORSES (cont’d) • Edward Smith Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, was friends with Sir Charles Bunbury. Both fellows enjoyed breeding horses. Together the two gentlemen founded a new horse race- a one mile springtime test of 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. However, before the first race could be held, it needed to be named. Which founder should the race be named after? There was only one way to settle the dispute. They flipped a coin, and that is why every spring we enjoy a derby instead of a bunbury. As consolation, Bunbury’s horse won the first derby. • The famous racehorse Man o’ War was the first animal whose obituary and biography appeared in the list of celebrities compiled by major press associations. • Moifaa was a well-known racehorse in the early part of this century. In 1904 the ship that was bringing him from New Zealand to England was sunk in a storm. Moifaa nearly drowned, but washed up still alive on an island. He wandered around the island for two weeks before he was rescued. He was sent to England and entered in the Grand National Steeplechase against 25 other horses. He won. • Bing Aman and Mart Jordan were two race horses who finished in a dead heat at the Gravesend Race Track in New York in 1873. So they ran the race again, and again they ended in a dead heat. The third time they tied as well, and the fourth race was as close as could be, but the judges ruled in favor of Bing Aman by a nose. The crowd didn’t agree. They rioted and destroyed a good deal of the track. • Gardening columnist Mike Klingman decided to see whose fertilizer was the best for tomatoes. He collected manure from all horses that finished on top in the Preakness Stakes and planted seedlings in the individually fertilized soil. The biggest tomatoes were grown in soil fertilized by a local nag who had never even seen the racetrack.

FRUIT FACTS • Three-quarters of all raisins consumed in the U.S. are eaten at breakfast. • Avocados are one of the few fruits that contain fat. An avocado has about 300 calories and 30 grams of fat, making it 22% fat. A banana has only 0.6 grams of fat. • Olives are another fatty fruit. Ten black olives have about 50 calories and 4 grams of fat. • Oranges will not ripen after being picked, but lemons will. • True cantaloupes only grow in Europe. The American version is actually a muskmelon. Same family, same genus, different species. Cantaloupe were named after the town which was named after the Cantaluppi Castle in Italy. Cantaloupes are rarely exported and very difficult to find in the U.S. • Papayas contain an enzyme called papain which is commonly used in meat tenderizers. • Dates are not a dried fruit; they look that way when they’re fresh. • The most popular berry in the U.S. is the strawberry. Blueberry comes in second. • Cranberries only grow in swampy bogs. Some cranberry beds will produce fruit for more than a century. • Every raspberry is really a conglomeration of hundreds of tiny individual fruits, each one containing a seed. • Blueberries contain more antioxidants per serving than any other fruit or vegetable, according to the USDA. More blueberries are grown in the state of Maine than anywhere else in the world. Blueberries are one of the few foods that are naturally blue in color. • Grapes are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and there are more varieties of grape produced in the world than any other fruit. • Pound for pound, the cherry contains the highest concentration of sugars. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com FRUIT FACTS (cont’d) • Worldwide, mangoes are the most popular fruit. In the U.S., bananas are top, followed by apples, watermelon, and oranges. • Until the mid-1800s the most popular, cheapest, and most widely available beverage (besides water) was apple cider. • Today the most popular juice is orange juice. • Strawberries are a member of the rose family. Americans eat about five pounds per year on average. • The only fruit with green flesh? Kiwi fruit. • Nectarines are a member of the rose family. Only one gene separates a nectarine from a peach: the fuzziness gene. • One type of Mexican papaya can weigh up to ten pounds (4.5 kg). • On an apple tree, it takes the energy from 50 leaves to support the production of a single apple. • Watermelon flesh is 97% water. WORD ORIGINS • Tangerines were named after the city of Tangiers, Morocco, which was well known for the fruit. • • The Sanskrit word “naranga” meaning “fragrant” is the origin of the word orange. • Spanish explorers looked at pineapples and thought they looked like pinecones, giving them their name. • When Christian missionaries first encountered a new plant in South America, they looked at the flower and saw Christ’s crown of thorns inside it. So they named it the passion fruit. • Grapefruit grow in clusters like grapes. • Avocados, originally grown in Central and South America, were called by the Spanish word “ahuacatl” meaning “testicle” because of the shape of the fruit.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Prostate Screening Guidance Has Changed DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 67 and male. When I had a male doctor, he did a yearly testicle and prostate exam during my physical. Now the practice has been taken over by female doctors, and for the past three years, this has not been done. Is this new? Is there a correct way to ask why the change? Believe me, this exam is not one I look forward to, but with a family history of prostate cancer and other cancers, the bloodwork I get each year alone does not seem to be enough. -- Anon. ANSWER: There has indeed been a change in the way prostate and testicular screening tests have been considered in recent years, and recommendations by advisory groups have changed as well. The current recommendation by the most influential group in the U.S., the Preventive Services Task Force, is against routine screening for prostate cancer and testicular cancer. However, there are some situations, such as with a strong family history, in which screening for these conditions is appropriate, and it is always appropriate for your doctor to listen to your concerns and preferences. As far as male doctors versus female, most studies have shown that women physicians tend to spend a bit more time with their patients and tend to be more in compliance with practice guidelines. However, differences between individuals are more important than differences between the groups. Just tell your doctor, male or female, that you would like to further discuss prostate and testicular cancer screening. READERS: The new booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement and cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had episodes for many years where I am shocked, like an electric shock, which wakes me from sleep. I jump out of bed, then my legs and feet tremble rapidly, and I need to sit down or I will fall. I have been diagnosed as having “night terrors,” but it is not that. I had a normal MRI. It used to happen twice a week, then dwindled to monthly. Lately, I have it pretty much under control. I wonder if there is some diagnosis out there for me. I hope you have an answer. It would make me feel like less of an idiot! -- J.N. ANSWER: I don’t think you are an idiot at all, and I do think I know the cause of these episodes. You have a pretty severe case of nocturnal myoclonus (which sounds like I know what I am talking about, but it just means muscle jerks at nighttime). These are very common and usually are normal, but are sometimes associated with epilepsy. Since yours aren’t getting worse over time and you haven’t had seizures, you are almost certain to have the “physiologic” type. Occasionally, there is a family history. I don’t think you will need any treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. 790-992-5321 1-800-359-4303 Jordan Has Spoken It was less than a year ago that Kareem Abdul Jabbar mentioned that Michael Jordan chose “commerce over conscience,” failing to comment on the social issues we face in America. Welcome to this week’s sports column. It’s time to let the man have his say, which he did on ESPN’s newly dropped website called “The Undefeated” -- the famous sport channel’s attempt to address racial matters, presumably in sports. Wedged between a listicle about Prince and the death of Ms. Cleo (which she surely predicted), we have a statement from his Airness himself. When you think about sports drinks or really cool sneakers or a guy who can fly and dunk on Bugs Bunny, only one name bubbles to the surface: Michael Jordan ... the second greatest player to ever play who did not fight Bruce Lee, through no fault of his own. When you think about social causes, the second most exposed athlete of all-time -- Jordan -remained silent on the issues that mattered. No longer. Jordan has spoken. Here are his words: “As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well. “I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers -- who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all -- are respected and supported. “Over the past three decades, I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change. “To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference. “We are privileged to live in the world’s greatest country -- a country that has provided my family and me the greatest of opportunities. The problems we face didn’t happen overnight and they won’t be solved tomorrow, but if we all work together, we can foster greater understanding, positive change and create a more peaceful world for ourselves, our children, our families and our communities.” Now, can we get back to the game? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fun Stuff to Do in 5 Minutes

What can you do in five minutes? Anything constructive? My friend’s mom had her doubts about it as a young girl growing up in Oregon. One day she acted bored and fidgety while waiting for her dad to get ready to take her somewhere. He suggested that she do something constructive while she waited. She told him that a few minutes wasn’t time enough to get anything done. Right then they jumped in the car and he drove her to a little house at the end of a streetcar line. It had a stunning garden, full of beautiful flowers. My friend’s mom was amazed. Her dad told her the little house belonged to a streetcar operator. Each time the streetcar reached the end of the line where the house was located, the operator would hop off and tend his garden for the five minutes he had before he had to hop back on and begin the streetcar’s run in the opposite direction. Her father said to her, “Look what the man has accomplished by making good use of the few minutes he had each time the streetcar stopped.” It was a lesson to remember. You might want to sit around the breakfast table with your kids today and think of the things you can do together that take about five minutes, then make a list to refer to when you are looking for a quick activity to share. If you happen to lose track of time, remember that in family life there doesn’t have to be a clock or a finish line. Here are ideas to make five minutes in your busy days count: --Pick a chore and finish it together. For example, fold towels from the dryer, wipe down kitchen counters, empty garbage from all the trash cans in the house, dust picture frames, take out junk from the car or wash bicycle water bottles. --Floss your teeth --Write a thank-you note --Whistle --Play a song on an instrument --Recite the alphabet backward --Practice times tables --Shine a pair of shoes --Fill a birdfeeder, wash a dog bowl or clean out the kitty litter box --Grab a pen and paper and play tic-tac-toe. --Read a picture book with a preschooler. --Tell recollections of a special event in your children’s lives. --Put together a to-do list for tomorrow. --Delete emails, photos and messages from electronic devices. --At bedtime, tell a story from your childhood about a time when you misbehaved. Kids like to hear how you got out of a jam. Don’t be surprised if they want to hear it over and over again. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. In too many senior patients, going under general anesthesia for surgery can leave a lingering problem with impaired concentration or memory. It’s called post-operative cognitive dysfunction, and in some cases, the effects might be permanent. The potential damage can depend on the degree of anesthesia. Add that to the trauma of the surgery itself, and there can be damage to the central nervous system. A study done in Brazil might have an answer to this growing problem: a drug called dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory. If given before an operation, the drug can help avoid problems while under anesthesia. For this study, researchers looked at 140 patients (ages 60 to 87) and gave pre-surgery tests to determine their mental status. During surgery itself, the patients were divided into four groups and were given varying levels of anesthesia. Only some of them were given the drug. The testing was double-blind, which means none of the participants or researchers knew who was getting what. The bottom line: All participants were tested on Days 3, 7, 21, 90 and 180 after surgery, with their cognitive and mental skills compared to their pre-surgery levels. The group that had superficial anesthesia plus the drug had 15.3 percent post-operative cognitive dysfunction, but within six months all those patients had returned to the pre-surgery testing levels. If you’re scheduled for surgery, have a talk with your doctor and your surgeon about the level of anesthesia you’re likely to receive. Deep anesthesia might not be required, and it shouldn’t be done routinely. Ask about the dexamethasone, too. Not everyone can take it, but it’s worth asking about if it helps preserve cognitive function. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Another Scammer Behind Bars A former Marine in Nevada has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a nationwide scam involving millions of dollars taken from the pockets of trusting people. The scam involved Nigerian oil wherein the perp claimed to be a Shell Oil heir, an oil expert who’d already sunk $500 million of his trust fund into the venture. Investors’ dollars would go toward the purchase of an oil refinery in the Bahamas, where the crude oil would be shipped. Among the charges were conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, passing a fictitious financial instrument, lying to the feds and failure to file income-tax returns. Oh, and he also submitted false claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The good: He’s going away for a very long time. The bad: While the case dragged on, he was a free man. For over two years his attorneys filed repeated objections or requests for delay. It was the tenth one where the judge drew the line: DENIED, it said on the court documents, when an attorney claimed he hadn’t had enough time to review the case. Why, one wonders, if he was raking in all that dough, did he also insist on defrauding the VA? Part of the multi-agency suit against him was for claiming service-related injury, which got him “decades” worth of disability benefits totaling thousands of dollars per month. How was he injured? He hurt his knee playing basketball in 1970 and was given a medical discharge. Apparently he claimed benefits for his knee all these years, saying he couldn’t work. Which begs the question: How is it that he could claim benefits for so many years without anyone checking? Without even being brought in for an examination or X-rays? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that a basketball injury might get better in a few years? (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
