TIDBITS® CONSIDERS BAD GUYS by Janet Spencer

There are many words in the English language that pertain to criminals. Come along with Tidbits as we tell the story behind those names! DECEITFUL TRAVELERS • In the mid-1300s, a Mafia-like fraternity arose in India. For centuries, this organized band of thieves specialized in robbing and murdering travelers. They were not interested in single travelers as much as they were interested in large caravans, which carried much more loot. • Members of this criminal underclass were trained in discipline and deceit. Their tactic involved having members of their band join the travelers in order to gain their trust while acting as spies. As the journey continued, more robbers would infiltrate, lulling the travelers into a false sense of security. • Eventually the caravan would settle in for the night where the terrain made it easy to attack and difficult to escape. While the group was sound asleep, the deceitful travel companions would call their compatriots to attack. Taken by surprise, the innocent travelers would be overwhelmed by the military precision which the gang employed. • This group of bandits wreaked havoc in India for centuries. Not until the British arrived in the 1800s was the group challenged, overcome, and disbanded. (cont’d)

DECEITFUL TRAVELERS (cont’) • The name of this stealthy and coordinated fraternity of assassins originated from the Hindu word for thief or deceiver, “thag,” and the crimes they committed were called acts of “thuggee.” Today a modified version of that word has come into English meaning a criminal who attacks innocent people: A thug. A GERMANIC TRIBE • Long ago an East Germanic tribe lived on the shores of the Danube River. Around the year 400 AD, they began to move west, possibly because they had been attacked by Huns. They were led by King Godigisel. • When they reached the Rhine River, they met resistance. A battle ensued. They won the fight, but Godigisel was killed. • His son, Geiseric (meaning “spear king”) took over. Over the next 50 years, King Geiseric turned this little-known tribe into a major power. They crossed the Rhine and invaded Gaul, which they looted. Then they wreaked havoc across Spain. From there, the entire tribe of 80,000 crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and invaded North Africa, pillaging and plundering along the way. In the year 438 A.D. they took the ancient Phoenician city of Carthage by entering the city when everyone was attending races. Geiseric led his people in conquering Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. • Then they sacked Rome. Pope Leo the Great pleaded with Geiseric to refrain from murdering the people or burning the buildings. Geiseric stole all the treasure and took the Empress hostage, along with her daughters. • Geiseric continued to lead his tribe until his death in the year 477 A.D. Following his death, his vast empire quickly crumbled. Today Geiseric’s people are remembered because the name of this East Germanic tribe now denotes someone who willfully destroys or defaces property. The tribe was known as the Vandals. Caring for Stray Cats

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a couple of stray cats that I put out food for each day. They must live in the woods behind my house. I’ve tried to lure them inside so I can take them to the vet to get spayed or neutered, but they’re too wary for that. Ultimately I’d like to take them in as pets. Is that realistic? -- Gary in Tampa, Florida DEAR GARY: Taming a feral cat -- and these two appear to be feral from your description -- is really unlikely. The fact that they come around for food at the same time every day is pretty good, but I don’t think you’ll ever get them to the point where they will be relaxed, indoor cats. However, getting them spayed or neutered is a good idea. So how do you manage to do that when they won’t come inside? First, you can contact the local shelter or a

veterinarian to find out if this is feasible. For example, a university study in central Florida lasting several years looked at the local feral cat population, as well as the effects of a trap-and-release program in which cats were spayed or neutered and released back into their roaming territory. A similar program could be available in your area, although you may need to trap the cats yourself (by luring them into a live trap with food, for example) and bring them in for treatment. Bringing feral cats into a household with tame housecats can be a recipe for disaster. Territorial spats, potential diseases and other problems could quickly arise. For now, feeding these cats and trying to get them medical care to keep the feral cat population from growing is a good thing to do. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. A MEAN MAN • According to the legend, Patrick was never a very nice guy. He arrived in London in the late 1800s and hired himself out as a bouncer. From there, he graduated to mugging people, racketeering, and vandalism. Then he organized a street gang and his influence was felt throughout the slums of London. Eventually, he killed a cop and went to prison for life, dying behind bars years later. • In 1899 a writer named Clarence Rook wrote a book which followed the life of a typical street punk, describing life in the slums from a criminal’s point of view. Clarence was a journalist, a novelist, and a writer of short sketches that depicted London in a realistic light. His book offered an irreverent depiction of the lifestyle of a working-class thug. Patrick was a central character in Clarence’s story. The book was very popular. • No one is really sure whether the book was fiction or fact, or whether Patrick was a real person or not. One way or the other, however, Patrick’s last name came into our language meaning a tough, aggressive, or violent youth. Soon the word was being used in police reports, newspaper articles, and even in a Sherlock Holmes story. Today it is still commonly used to describe someone who causes mayhem or disturbances, particularly regarding rowdy and unruly behavior surrounding sporting events. Patrick’s last name was Hooligan, and the book Clarence wrote was called “Hooligan Nights.”

Jct. U.S. 35 and St. Rt. 327 • Jackson, OH 45640 740-288-9995 Dolls, Dolls, Dolls Q: I am the executor of the estate of a woman who collected dolls for more than 50 years. I am overwhelmed by more than a thousand dolls, mostly stored in 10 glass-front china cabinets. Should I get them insured? Regular homeowners insurance will cover the collection for only $1,500, and I am certain it is worth many times that amount. How I can determine current values and find a way to liquidate the collection. -- Ellen, Palos Hills, Illinois A: There are three references that might be helpful: “The 16th Blue Book: Dolls and Values” by Jan Foulke; “200 Years of Dolls” by Dawn Herlocher; and “The Official Price Guide to Dolls” by Denise Van Patten. All are available at www.amazon. com. Contact your homeowners insurance agent and request a quote to expand the coverage for the collection. Since you want to liquidate the dolls, I recommend you investigate the excellent auction houses in Chicago. Three include Direct Auction Galleries, Inc., 7232 North Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60645; Susanin’s Auction House, 900 South Clinton St., Chicago, IL 60607; and Leonard Auctions, 1765 Courtland Court, Suite D, Addison, IL 60101. *** Q: I have a copy of “The Fine Art of Walt

Disney’s Donald Duck” by Carl Barks. It is a signed copy, No. 446 out of a press run of 1,875. What is my book worth, and where can I sell it? -- Nancy, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: The book retails for about $1,200, according to information I found at www.abe.com. It was published by Another Rainbow of Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1981. You might begin your quest to sell it by contacting used- and rare-book dealers in Albuquerque. Do not expect to be offered $1,200 for it, however, since that is the retail selling price. *** Q: I have three pieces of Roseville pottery. -Patricia, Fiskeville, Rhode Island A: Without seeing your Roseville pieces, I can’t identify the pattern. What I can do is recommend one of the better references, “Warman’s Roseville Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by Denise Rago and published by Krause Books. This reference is $24.99 and will help you identify the pattern of your three pieces along with current values. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com A SAN FRANCISCO THUG • According to legend, a man named Muldoon led a gang of street thugs that kept the entire waterfront area of San Francisco under their tight control in the 1870s. A newspaper wanted to end their tyranny but was so intimidated by the gang that they dared not use Muldoon’s real name. They spelled it backwards and changed the N to an H, and “hoodlum” entered the language. A CONTEST WINNER • During Prohibition in 1924, a wealthy banker from Massachusetts named Delcevare King backed the Prohibition laws and was angry that people blatantly broke the no-liquor rules. He decided to sponsor a contest to come up with a new name to describe “a lawless drinker of illegally made or illegally obtained liquor,” offering the substantial sum of $200 in prize money (worth about $2,775 today). • Because King was a graduate of Harvard, the editors of the school newspaper promoted the contest and followed the results with interest. King was quoted as saying, “People can poke fun at the idea that the violator of law is a menace to the government, but after all, law is the basis of government.” • He hoped that his contest would result in coining a new term that was so stinging it would turn people away from drink. He received over 25,000 entries submitted by more than 6,000 people. • The winning entry was submitted by two people, and they split the prize money. Most people, especially linguists, thought the new word would never catch on, and an editor of Funk & Wagnalls dictionary commented that the term, “widely publicized several months ago as the term applied to those who violate the prohibition laws, is fast fading.” • However, the new prize-winning word survived and is now a common term denoting a petty criminal who flaunts the rules or ignores regulations, or refuses to show up in court for minor violations. The word is scofflaw, one who scoffs at the law. IN EXILE • The words “banned,” “banished,” “bandit,” and “bandito” all spring from the Italian word “bandire” meaning “to exile.” That became the Germanic word “bannan” which applied to their practice of banning, or exiling, all bandits.

Amazing Animals CHICKENS • The chicken is probably the most common bird in the world, with around 25 billion worldwide. They outnumber humans by about 4 to 1. • Modern day chickens originated with wild Asian jungle fowl, a member of the pheasant family. They were domesticated about 8,000 years ago. • Over 4,000 years ago ancient Egyptians built incubators capable of housing 10,000 chicks. • The oldest chicken known was 22 years old. Chickens can easily live to the age of 7, though the chickens for sale in the grocery store are slaughtered at the age of 5 to 8 weeks old. • At any given time there are over 450 million chickens in the U.S. Americans consume 8 billion chickens per year. • Americans eat more than 90 lbs. of poultry per person each year, plus an average of 250 eggs. • In the 1930s, the average American hen laid 121 eggs per year. Today, they’re up to about 217 eggs annually. • The world record for egg-laying by a chicken is held by a white leghorn in Sri Lanka, who laid 17 eggs in six hours in 1967. Another record was set when a white leghorn laid 371 eggs in 364 days. • Marigolds have routinely been dried, powdered, and fed to chickens to make egg yolks look more yellow. • The yolk has 59 calories, and the white has only 16. • Brown eggs and white eggs are identical nutritionally. Only two kinds of chickens out of the thousands of varieties lay white eggs. If a chicken has red ear lobes, it will lay brown eggs; if the ear lobe is white, it lays white eggs. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 CHICKENS (cont’d) • During World War II when eggs were scarce, researchers in the British Isles tasted other bird eggs trying to find a successful substitute. In blind taste tests, the hen’s egg received the highest rating, followed by a three-way tie between the coot, moorhen, and gull. At the bottom of the list were the eggs of the warbler and wren. • If human babies grew as fast as chickens, a newborn baby would weigh about 600 pounds (272 kg) by the age of two months. • About half of all chicken sold are processed into patties, burgers, strips, and so forth. • Do male chickens taste different than female chickens? Yes, male chickens taste stronger than female chickens. Old chickens are more flavorful than young chickens. • Chicken will lay fewer eggs as they grow older, but the eggs will be larger. • Chickens have over 30 different kinds of vocalizations for communication. • The chicken is the closest living relative to the great Tyrannosaurus rex. • Chickens dream. They can see in full color and their eyesight is sharper than a human’s. They can recognize more than 100 other chickens and also recognize human faces. • A mother hen will turn her eggs about 50 times a day. • A female chicken is called a pullet until she is old enough to lay eggs, when she is called a hen. • Chickens have more bones in their necks than giraffes. They have three eyelids and can run up to 9 mph (14 km/hr). • There are about 175 separate species of chickens. • Chickens don’t pee. It is just mixed into the poop, which is the case with most birds.

PHRASE FACTS • When wool is dyed before it is spun into yarn, it keeps its color much longer. Thus, the expression “dyed in the wool.” • A small spot behind the ears of newborn animals is the last spot on the hide to dry after birth. So anyone who is still “wet behind the ears” isn’t very mature yet. • In the 1500s the French played a game similar to backgammon that was called “lourche.” The player who was falling behind in the game was “left in the lourche,” today known as being “left in the lurch.” • In the first century B.C., the Parthians conquered many nations by using a new battle ploy. They would turn away from the enemy, feigning defeat. But as they fled, they would turn around and shoot arrows at their pursuers. The maneuver was called a “Parthian shot” which today is known as “a parting shot.” • In the 1600s when craftsmen finished making a pitcher, they filled it with water to see if it held water. Nowadays we speak of an idea that “doesn’t hold water.” • When folks want to hide the fact that they’re laughing, they cover their mouth with their arm, resulting in what is known as “laughing up their sleeves.” • In the days of knights in shining armor, some knights would go from town to town offering themselves and their lances for hire. They were the first “free lancers.” • When a chicken is placed on a butchering block, it will naturally stick its neck out, making it easier for the butcher to cut its head off. Therefore it’s pretty dangerous to go around “sticking your neck out.” • Mustard had always been popular, but often the mustard on the market was of poor quality or had been adulterated. This led to the phrase “to be the proper mustard” which has evolved into “it doesn’t cut the mustard.” (cont’d)

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com PHRASE FACTS (cont’d) • At harness races held at local county fairs, the horses were sometimes too eager to start the race and would often break ranks and head down the track before the race began. It was important that the riders be able to keep their horses under control. This resulted in the phrase “hold your horses.” • Witches on secret errands for the devil would depart from their homes on a broomstick after dark so they wouldn’t be detected. This gave us the expression “fly-by-night.” • In some parts of England, “dander” meant anger, so “to get your dander up” was literally to become angry. • A century ago shirts were not as well fitted as they are today, and most men found that a nice looking shirt would tend to restrict the movement of the arms somewhat. Therefore when a fist fight was imminent, the first order of business was to remove the shirt to have better swinging power. Today when someone gets antsy we tell them to “keep your shirt on.” • In the 1500s one’s property boundary would be indicated by a line cut by a plowshare across the field. Now that’s where we “draw the line.” • Beasts of burden and other animals have historically been led about by means of a ring in the nose to which a leash is attached. Hence the phrase, “lead by the nose.” • In days of old, carpets were fine and fancy and only put on the floors in rooms where the gentry resided. Generally the only time a subservient person would get to walk on a carpet was when they were being “called on the carpet” to be reprimanded in front of their wealthy employer. • The two ventricles of the human heart resemble the two valves of a mollusk known as a cockle; thus something pleasing “warms the cockles of our hearts.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: My pharmacy recommends that I switch to the generic to save a lot of money on each refill, as it’s exactly the same as the brand name. My neurologist is adamantly against this and says that generics vary too much and may not be effective. Who is right? I am paying the much higher amount for the brand name Keppra out of pocket. Also, I only had a couple of seizures years ago -- at some point, can’t I wean off the meds? I think my seizures were a one-time event. -- N.R.B. ANSWER: Generics are required to have the same amount of the exact medication as the brand name. Some clinicians feel that some generic medications are absorbed differently from the brand name, and that very small variations in dosage are important. I won’t tell you to ignore your neurologist’s advice, but most people stay just as well-controlled on generic levetiracetam as on brand name Keppra. As far as discontinuing seizure medicine, really, only your neurologist can answer that. It depends on your seizure history, and the results of your EEG and possibly your brain MRI. Most neurologists will consider stopping the medication after one or more years with no seizures, in most cases. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? -- T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. Readers: Women today have the best chance ever of overcoming breast cancer. To learn more, order the booklet Breast Cancer: Detection and Treatment by writing Dr. Donohue -- No. 1101W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that tuna fish contains a lot of mercury, so intake should be limited. I like solid white albacore tuna. I eat one 4-ounce can per week. How much is safe? -- P.W.K. ANSWER: Albacore has relatively high amounts of mercury, and the recommendation by the Environmental Protection Agency is to limit consumption to three 6-ounce portions per month for women, and three 8-ounce servings for men. You are well within the safe limit. Canned light tuna and canned salmon have much less mercury. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The Simple Olympics If there was one consistent takeaway for America from these past Olympics it is that: 1) we have the best athletes (and sport outfitters) in the world, and 2) yeah, we’re more than just a little bit insane. I know where you think I’m going with this ... that I’m going to bring up the Ryan Lochte “situation.” I am, of course, but only for a brief moment. Ryan Lochte is a dunce. Now, before you say it’s not nice to name call, let me also call out Usain Bolt. He is great. Also let me state that Michael Phelps is a freak of nature and broke records that had stood since ancient Greece. Carmelo Anthony has won three gold medals, and Coach K has lost only one game ever in Olympic play. That’s incredible. You want name calling? Just how many kids are going to be named Simone after these Olympics? Yep, America won the eagle’s share of the gold, and pretty much lapped the competition. For Russia, this was a particularly humiliating Olympics. It’s one thing to implement statesponsored cheating, it’s an entire other thing to get completely nailed for it, too. The Olympics are actually great places to call names. Everyone knows that there is a tradition at the end of the games to proclaim them as “the best ever,” even if it didn’t happen in Atlanta or Rio, I think. In Atlanta, we received an “attaboy” sentiment, and I believe Rio was simply told they were “magnificent.” Whether or not that was a good thing is for Rio to figure out. One thing we have figured out is the art of storytelling. Every Olympics, the pre-match bios get more and more “Million Dollar Baby.” Just once I would like the story of an Olympian to be boring and with no compelling backstory at all. It would really be something to see a b-roll of some kid who simply grew up in Middletown, Wherever, and carried a C or B average through high school, but one day found out he was really fast ... or a really good shot ... and by accident, he tried out for the games and came in seventh. We never hear those stories. Of course, it also wouldn’t hurt if the press would stop with all the “displaced resident” stories. Look, we get it ... the powers that be aren’t going to bulldoze the mansions owned by the richest people in the ritziest part of the city to build a stadium that will be useless in two weeks’ time. Is anyone shocked to learn of this? Every year, the reporters write about government spending on infrastructure, how pollution is atrocious, how everyone that dips a toe in the water will contract syphilis, and come dusk, will be eaten alive by headshrinking mosquitos. Sometimes you just have to let the simple ideas win out. We were watching people, athletes, run and jump and play games for their country, and that simple thrill should be enough for us all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

* On Sept. 18, 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol. The building would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it, and it was called into use during the Civil War.

* On Sept. 17, 1965, four adventurous Englishmen arrive at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany after crossing the English Channel by Amphicar, an amphibious passenger car powered by a 43-horsepower Triumph Herald engine. Despite choppy waters and a flooded engine, the two vehicles made the crossing in about seven hours. * On Sept. 15, 1978, boxer Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay) defeats Leon Spinks to regain the world heavyweight boxing title. Ali had first won the title in 1964 at age 22, defeating Sonny Liston. * On Sept. 12, 1993, the rebuilt Lacey V. Murrow Bridge over Lake Washington opens in Seattle. The old bridge was almost 2 miles long and floated on more than 20 hollow concrete pontoons. During repairs in 1990, the bridge broke apart and sank. * On Sept. 13, 2004, TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey gives a brand-new Pontiac G-6 sedan, worth $28,500, to all 276 members of her studio audience. However, the winners were left with a large bill: up to $6,000 in federal and state income taxes. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Low-and-Slow Ribs with Asian Salad Low-and-Slow Ribs with Asian Salad You’ll need eight hours to slow-cook pork spareribs (on low), but the reward for your patience is delectable. 3 1/2 pounds pork spareribs 1 cups teriyaki glaze (see Tip) 1 (12 to 14 ounces) English (seedless) cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced 1 bag (10 ounces) shredded carrots 1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar 1. In 4 1/2- to 6-quart slow-cooker bowl, place ribs and teriyaki glaze, spreading teriyaki to coat ribs on all sides. Cover slow cooker with lid and cook as manufacturer directs on low setting 8 hours or on high setting 4 hours. 2. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir cucumber, carrots and rice vinegar until blended. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 4 cups salad. 3. To serve, transfer ribs to cutting board; cut into portions. Skim and discard fat from cooking liquid. Arrange ribs and salad on dinner plates. Spoon remaining liquid over ribs. Serves 8. Tip: We got luscious stick-to-the-ribs results using a thick teriyaki glaze (such as Kikkoman’s Teriyaki Baste & Glaze) rather than a thinner sauce. * Each serving: About 390 calories, 22g total fat (9g saturated), 26g protein, 18g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 89mg cholesterol, 1,185mg sodium. It’s Easier to Find a Good Nursing Home Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website now has the long-awaited star ratings. Announced months ago, the site has added six more quality measurements and has added the star features, making it easier to do comparisons when the time comes to pick out a nursing home. To find the nursing home ratings, go online to www.medicare.gov and put “nursing home compare” in the search box. Put in your ZIP code, and you can compare up to three at a time. The devil is in the details, as always. Look for tiny items like the number of minutes of physical therapy per resident per day, dates of last inspections, residents rights deficiencies, any mistreatment complaints, pharmacy service deficiencies and any penalties and fines in the past three years. Be sure to click and read the actual inspection reports. You might find that cleaning materials and foods were comingled, or that food was left uncovered in the freezer. What’s concerning is that not all the inspection reports are there. You’ll need to know if a facility has eight fire-code deficiencies, or that the ceiling over the food-prep area has peeling paint, or that insulin wasn’t kept at the correct cold temperature or had expired. One thing lacking in the ratings is that nowhere will you find resident or family satisfaction. The data is mostly self-reported by the nursing homes themselves and the measures aren’t necessarily comparable between facilities, especially the ratings that don’t include full inspection reports. While the star rating is a good place to begin, it shouldn’t be the end of your research into a good nursing home. Ask for recommendations from your doctor or people you know. VA Expands Program for Service Dogs

The Department of Veterans Affairs has long provided veterinary care for the guide and service dogs of veterans who can benefit from having a dog, but now an additional category will be explored in a pilot program. Approved veterans whose mobility is limited by mentalhealth disorders will be able to get veterinary care for their animals if the program proves successful. The Service Dog Benefits Pilot will allow an additional 100 veterans to get veterinary care for their dogs. That care includes all the things a normal household pet would get: immunizations, dental care, screenings, preventive care, wellness and sick-animal visits, screenings, emergency care, prescriptions and any treatment that helps the dog do its job for the veteran. Specific food, if the dog is on a special diet, and all the gear (such as harness, backpack) also is provided. Until now, only veterans having hearing, visual or mobility impairment that is determined to be helped by having a dog have had veterinary care provided. While guide dogs are specially trained to assist those who have vision impairments by avoiding obstacles, service dogs are trained to do a variety of specific tasks so the veteran can live independently. That might include helping vets with hearing loss and physical impairments. Other facts: * Veterans who are matched up with a dog are expected to spend time training, and travel costs can be prohibitive. In that case, the VA provides financial support for training time and travel. * After the veteran is approved for the program, only dogs obtained from accredited Assistance Dogs International or International Guide Dog Federation facilities are approved.
