Approximately 1.23 billion people around the world spend an average of an hour a day playing video games. This week, Tidbits studies up on the history of this industry. • Video games were being developed as far back as the 1950s, when New Mexico’s Los Alamos Laboratories developed the first blackjack program on an IBM 701 computer in 1954. A checkers game came along two years later on the same type of IBM computer. (This game defeated a checkers master in 1964!) • William Higinbotham was an American physicist who was a member of the team that developed the first nuclear bomb. In 1958, he created “Tennis for Two,” played on an oscilloscope. Although Higinbotham obtained twenty-plus patents during his life, he never patented his video game. • In 1962, Steve Russell, a computer scientist from MIT, led a team that developed a game on one of the first PDP-1 computers, which were the first to use a screen and a typewriter keyboard. “Spacewar!” is considered the first recognized widely available computer game. This two-player game required each player to take control of a starship while firing photon torpedoes in an attempt to destroy the other. A star in the center of the screen pulled on both ships as they maneuvered to keep from falling into the gravitational pull.

Some Dog Owners Need Training, Too like that just add fuel to arguments against dog parks or dogs in public areas. To get a dog to behave on command, two key factors can make a difference in training: A calm, confident voice when giving commands, and consequences. If a dog won’t follow a command, corrective action must be given as soon as possible -- putting it back on the leash, leaving the dog park, whatever. Not surprisingly, dog owners who aren’t controlling their dogs respond to the same factors. If a dog is disrupting the other pets’ enjoyment of the park, tell its owner -- with confidence! -- that their dog has to act within the park’s rules, or leave. If they don’t respond, then bring the consequences: report the owner and dog to the city, or to the group -- if the dog park has an organized group of other owners. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

VIDEO GAMES (continued): In 1971, engineers Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney created “Computer Space,” the first arcade game. The following year they founded Atari, and released the legendary arcade game “Pong.” Bushnell sold Atari to Warner Communications in 1976 for $28 million and remained employed as president of the company. By 1982, the company was experiencing $1.3 billion in annual sales and was the fastest-growing company in the history of American business. The Atari 2000 was introduced in 1977, a game system that incorporated joysticks, interchangeable cartridges, color graphics, and different settings for difficulty. Before long, Atari wasn’t the only game in town. In 1979, Mattel debuted their game system Intellivision, an improvement over the Atari 2000, and experienced sales of three million units. In July of 1980, a Japanese company, Namco, released the arcade game Pac-Man. It was designed by Toru Iwatani, supposedly while eating pizza. The player guides Pac-Man through a maze as he eats dots while pursued by four enemy “ghosts,” Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. One of the highest-grossing video games of all time, it was followed by Ms. Pac-Man in 1982. 2nd Quarter 2016 Nintendo acquired the rights to distribute the Week 19 Magnavox Odyssey in 1974, the first home video game console, a system with 12 games. 1 -theMay 7 InMay 1981, company released the first of its many Page successful games, “Donkey Kong,” 1 featuring a carpenter named Jumpman. It was the world’s first look at the character who would later be called Mario, with a new occupation, that of plumber. “Donkey Kong” was the first game to have four levels. In 1983, Atari suffered losses of $533 million, and the company was sectioned off and sold to three different buyers.

VIDEO GAMES (continued): • A 29-year-old Russian mathematician named Alexey Pajitnov released the puzzle game “Tetris” in 1984, featuring “Tetriminos,” geometric game pieces made up of four square blocks each. As the puzzle pieces fit together, lines are cleared, and when four lines are cleared, the player achieves a “Tetris.” The name comes from the ancient Greek word tetra, meaning “four.” • Nintendo released its game system in 1985, as well as the wildly successful “Super Mario Brothers” game. Another huge success, “The Legend of Zelda” came along in 1987. In 1989, the company introduced the hand-held video game device, the Game Boy. • Sega took a chunk out of Nintendo’s profits when they introduced their system, Sega Genesis, in 1989, with sales of nearly 31 million units, and their famous character Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991. Another competitor entered the scene in 1995 when Sony debuted their first PlayStation. Nintendo rebounded the following year with the Nintendo 64 system, and Sega followed up in 1999 with their Dreamcast console. • Microsoft unveiled their X-Box system in 2001, launching it with the new game “Halo.” Sony quickly answered with the PlayStation 2 the next year, the first game console to use DVD technology. PlayStation 2 is the bestselling home game console to date, with over 155 million units sold, while their latest upgrade, PlayStation 4, released in 2013, is the fastest-selling in history, with sales of one million consoles in the first 24 hours. • Anyone could become a musician like Jimi Hendrix with the introduction of “Guitar Hero” in 2005. With its guitar-shaped controller, resembling a miniature Gibson SG, the player presses buttons on the controller keeping in time with the music notes on the screen.

Judy Bolton Mysteries

Q: I realize that you have written in the past about Nancy Drew books. When I was a young girl, I became addicted to the Judy Bolton series and have the first five published during the early 1930s, namely “The Vanishing Shadow,” “The Haunted Attic,” “The Invisible Chimes,” “Seven Strange Clues” and “The Ghost Parade.” All are in excellent condition, and all except “Ghost Parade” have their original covers. -- Carole, Springfield, Missouri A: One of the better reference books for series such as Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, Penny Parker and Judy Bolton is “All About Collecting Girls’ Series Books” by John Axe and published by Hobby House Books. According to Axe, the first Judy Bolton title was issued in 1932. The next nine titles followed between 1932 and 1937. The series, written by Margaret Sutton, eventually ended in 1967 after some 38 titles, a record for a juvenile mystery-series author. Values can vary, but the first editions from the early 1930s seem to sell in the $5-$75 range. *** Q: I am sending you a picture of an antique necklace that I have inherited. I need you to tell me its history and how much it is worth. --

discount within 40 mile radius from the Henderson Sales Center

Beverly, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: As I often say in this column, I do not appraise items. There is a reason for this. I am not an appraiser, and I don’t make guesstimates. If I tell you your necklace is worth $200 and you later find out it is worth several times that amount, you would not be happy with me. If you suspect your necklace is valuable, find out for certain by hiring a professional appraiser in your area. It will be worth the investment. *** Q: I have inherited about a dozen pieces of majolica pottery. Most are from the Victorianera. Can you recommend a good reference so I can determine current values? -- Carol, El Paso, Texas A: One of the better references is “Warman’s Majolica: Identification and Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books. When using a price guide, keep in mind that prices listed are not chiseled in stone. Prices can vary from region to region, and the market is always in flux. * You might be surprised to learn that actor James Doohan, best known for his role as Scotty in the original “Star Trek” series, served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II. He saw combat for the first time at the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, where he led his men through a field of anti-tank mines to reach higher ground. After defensive positions had been established that night, he was crossing between command posts when he was shot six times -- by a Canadian sentry. One of the bullets hit his chest, but it was stopped by a silver cigarette case that his brother had given him. * Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed what they’re calling the “SlugBog” -- a robot that eats slugs and is powered by the bio-gas created by their decay. * If you’ve ever had to explain yourself the morning after a raucous night out, you might be glad to know that the Tsonga people of southern Africa have a word that can be useful in certain of these circumstances. “Rhwe” means to sleep on the floor without a mat, while drunk and naked. * The University of Gottingen, in Germany, is in possession of a rare Bible -- it’s printed on 2,470 palm leaves. *** Thought for the Day: “A fellow of mediocre talent will remain a mediocrity, whether he travels or not; but one of superior talent (which without impiety I cannot deny that I possess) will go to seed if he always remains in the same place.” -- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com VIDEO GAMES (continued): • Although Guitar Hero was enormously successful, (with sales of $1 billion in its first week), it had trouble keeping producers and developers, and the franchise shut down in 2011. • There are several negative aspects of playing video games, including tendonitis in the hands and wrists, backaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, the promotion of sedentary behavior, and social isolation. Violent games have been linked to aggressive behavior and desensitization to violence. Gaming marathons have even resulted in deaths, including recently when a 38-year-old man died after playing non-stop for five days, and another 32-year-old who suffered a heart attack and died after playing for three days straight without stopping. • Video games also have some positive benefits. Studies indicate that they improve handeye coordination, motor skills, and spatial reasoning skills. Playing also contributes to the ability to multi-task and make quick decisions, since most games require fast reactions. Brain scans have shown improved concentration and pattern recognition. Favorable results have been achieved in helping people with autism and with improving memory in those with dementia. • Who plays video games in America? More than 150 million Americans play on a regular basis, about two-thirds of American households. Four out of five U.S. households own a device that is used to play video games, with at least two gamers per household. Fifty-one percent of U.S. homes have a dedicated game console. The average age is 35, with 60% males and 40% female, with 42% of Americans playng three hours or more per week. Thirty-five percent of players use their Smartphone to play.

UNUSUAL ANIMALS:

RED PANDA

Most of us think of pandas as the giant blackand-white bear weighing close to 350 lbs. (160 kg.) Did you know there is also a red panda that doesn’t even resemble that big bear? Read along and learn. • The red panda, found in Nepal, India, Bhutan, and part of China, isn’t really a panda at all, or even a bear. It shares the habitat of the giant panda of the foothills of Nepal’s Himalayan Mountain range and in the cool bamboo forests of central China, and eats the same diet, but there the similarities end. The red panda more closely resembles a raccoon, complete with a ring-striped tail, and in fact belongs to the same genetic superfamily as the raccoon, skunk, weasel, and badger. • It’s just slightly larger than a household cat, about 25 inches (63 cm) long, with a long bushy tail of an additional 19 inches (47 cm), which it uses as a wraparound blanket on cold nights. A red panda will weigh from 7 to 14 pounds (3.2 to 6.4 kg) when fully grown. Its entire body, even the bottom of its feet, is covered with soft dense fur. • For the most part, red pandas are herbivores, a plant-eating animal. However, they do supplement their diet with fish, bird eggs, and insects when available, as well as fruit during the warmer seasons. They also like mushrooms and acorns but two-thirds of their diet consists of bamboo. Unfortunately, bamboo is not a very good source of energy as well as being hard to digest. The panda must spend 13 hours a day eating and looking for food in order to sustain its body, and must eat 20% to 30% of its body weight each day – between 2 and 4 lbs. (1 to 2 kg) of bamboo shoots and leaves. A panda might eat up to 20,000 bamboo leaves in one day!

RED PANDA (continued): The pandas spend most of their lives in trees, feeding and sleeping. They aren’t social animals, and keep pretty much to themselves, leading a solitary life. A typical panda’s life span is about eight years. The name “panda” translates from the Nepali language “ponya,” which means “bamboo or plant-eating animal.” In the Chinese, the name is “hun-ho,” translating “firefox,” which is used by Mozilla as the name of their browser. (Mozilla had originally considered “Firebird” as the name, but discovered it was already been used.) Because it’s estimated that there are fewer than 10,000 adult red pandas remaining, it’s classified an endangered species. While hunting is illegal in most places, in southwest China, they are hunted for their fur, particularly the bushy tails, from which hats are created. The tails and hides are frequently part of weddings, as bridegrooms traditionally carry the hide, and panda tail hats are considered good-luck charms for newlyweds. Images of the panda have been discovered in 13thcentury Chinese artwork as part of a hunting scene. Fans of the animated Kung Fu Panda films will recognize the character of Shifu as an elderly red panda. Voiced by Dustin Hoffman, Shifu serves as the strict kung fu master.

PROUDLY MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WITH AMERICAN MADE STEEL

May 1 – 7 has been designated as Goodwill Industries Week, and what finer time for Tidbits to bring you the particulars on this worldwide charitable organization. • It was the dream of Edgar Helms’ parents that he live his life on the Iowa family farm, but Edgar had a dream for a greater cause. Feeling a call to devote his life to the church and helping others, he enrolled in Cornell College, and later Boston University, earning a Bachelors Degree of Sacred Theology. His excellent academic achievements earned him a fellowship to London to study the povertystricken neighborhoods there, with the dream of doing missionary work in India afterward. • Helms was disappointed to learn that he was not being sent to India after all, but instead to a Methodist church in one of Boston’s poorest immigrant areas. Morgan Hill Chapel, situated in one of America’s worst slums, was surrounded by drug addicts, thieves, gamblers, prostitutes, and every type of criminal. Helms and his wife established a settlement house, a haven for immigrants which provided a nursery, a gymnasium, recreational activities, English classes, and other education helping the immigrants settle into their new life. • Helms was soon inundated with requests for food and clothing. In 1902, he began combing Boston’s wealthier neighborhoods carrying a burlap bag, collecting discarded and damaged goods. He then offered wages to the poor of Morgan Hill to mend and repair items, which were in turn sold to the poor. The proceeds were used to develop job training programs. It was Helms’ motto that the poor “needed a chance, not a charity,” believing that their greatest need and want was employment.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com •

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES (continued): By 1905, Helms’ endeavor was known as Morgan Memorial Cooperative Industries and Stores. With money from his church, Helms began a trek across the United States, spreading the word of his undertaking. He also became a pioneer in the fight for equal pay and fair treatment of immigrant workers. When approached by the disabled, he became an advocate for their equal employment opportunities as well. The organization was soon incorporated as Goodwill Industries, and by 1934, Goodwill was a strong force in providing aid to those in need. They approached one of the advisors to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt with an innovative idea. Goodwill’s executives proposed that the federal government make a $5 million grant to the organization, and Goodwill would put every unemployed American to work. There is no evidence that FDR considered the proposition. Following Edgar’s death in 1942, his son Reverend Henry Helms became executive director, and devoted his life to fulfilling his father’s mission. Today, Goodwill generates nearly $5.5 billion in revenue every year, with over 80% of that amount spent directly on the organization’s employment and community services. Last year, close to 27 million people were served and nearly 320,000 people placed into employment after receiving Goodwill’s job training. More than 2,600 thrift stores fund Goodwill’s calling. Macon, Georgia, is home to Helms College, an institution established in 2007 to provide education in the culinary arts, medical and health vocations, automotive technology, and the construction industry.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just wanted to touch base with you about my diabetes. While my weight has stayed stable around 320 pounds, my sugar numbers have been increasingly hard to keep in line. I’ve maxed out on the oral medications we use. My latest A1c was 6.6. The doctor says it should be under 6 and that our next step is insulin. He asked me to try to lose 50 pounds over the next six months in order to get my sugar back under control. I agree and want it to happen. I’m counting calories and cutting out carbs, and have started walking in the morning. I know I can’t run, with no discs in my bottom three vertebrae. But even walking is hard. I walk until my leg goes numb, but I don’t think it will be enough, and I may not even be able to keep that up. Even walking easy makes my hip hurt and leg go numb after about 20 minutes. -- S.A. ANSWER: I am surprised by your doctor’s advice, because it’s very clear now (from the ACCORD study) that an A1c (a measure of average sugar levels) of 7 percent has lower overall risks than an A1c of 6 percent for someone like you. Exercise is always good, and my first thought is water. Getting in a pool will take pressure off your back, and you should be able to swim, walk in the water or do water-exercise classes to your heart’s content. Readers: Start reaping the benefits of exercise the moment you begin. To learn more, order the booklet on Aerobics, Fitness and Abdominal Exercises by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about laser iridotomy for angle-closure glaucoma? What are the risks? What is the success rate? Any other things that would help make a decision? -- J.K. ANSWER: Glaucoma is increased pressure inside the eye. Without treatment, it damages the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss, even permanent blindness. Angle-closure glaucoma is caused by abnormal anatomy inside the eye, where the lens blocks the pupil, “closing” the channels that allow fluid to leave the eye. In acute closed-angle glaucoma, symptoms include headache, a “halo” around lights and severe eye pain. This is an emergency, since permanent vision changes may occur within hours to days, so the surgery is done immediately. Ophthalmologists can suspect the condition based on exam, and if confirmed, will recommend treatment to prevent this emergency. It sounds like that is what has happened in your case. I resist making a recommendation of laser versus non-laser surgery. In my mind, you trust your surgeon to use the right technique for you. However, in this case, laser is the standard treatment. I have read effectiveness rates of 60 percent to 95 percent. Complications are uncommon but can include inflammation and “ghost” images. Repeat surgery is occasionally needed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. DINO BLAST FAMILY DAY JUNE 4th

No More Drama From Black Mamba In my lifetime, I cannot recall a player as great and more despised as Kobe Bryant, the selfproclaimed greatest Laker of all-time. Some will immediately point to Barry Bonds as an example, but really, there’s not as much to dislike about Bonds. Both were great players. Bonds, however, will forever be known as the guy who ruined the baseball record book; Kobe will never be remembered as having “ruined” the game -- at least on the court. Bonds is different in other ways. He had two careers, the one before the allegations of steroid use, and the one where his head size literally became too big for his helmet to handle. In both stages of his career, Bonds was always something special to watch. And yes, while Bonds was never a favorite in the clubhouse, and reporters took a quick dislike to him whenever he refused to be cordial, one can always argue that the steroid scandal that seemed to only grip baseball and forever tarnished his reputation was magnified by that surliness. I mean, Sammy Sosa was always a happy-golucky guy. Mark McGwire wasn’t ever going to be confused for a standup comic, but he seemed like a pretty-standup guy. Let me state this: I personally believe that Kobe was the best player of the post-Jordan era. I can’t imagine anybody arguing that from a statistical standpoint. Twenty years playing for the same team, the second highest scoring game (81), five championship rings, most points in LA Lakers history, 18-time all-star and a league MVP award. A product of Philadelphia, he probably is that legendary city’s best high-school player ever, and arguably the best player the city ever produced. Sorry, I’d still pick Wilt Chamberlain overall (but not at shooting guard). There are, unfortunately, other stories from this storied career, and let those also be a great lesson to every young athlete out there: The way you comport yourself off the court or field, in the locker room and in your hotel room Jacuzzi does most definitely help define you. Kobe scored the most points in Laker history, but he also missed the most shots in NBA history and gave up almost as many turnovers as he had assists. He was the guy who didn’t want other players looking at him in the locker room, the guy who lacked humility, who often sabotaged himself and the team due to his desire to be the sole center of attention. He wasn’t the guy in the band; he was a solo act, the before and after party. Most Laker fans will argue that they would certainly take the 15 playoff appearances and five rings, the show he put on every night, including the final game of his career where he scored 60 points on 50 shots and took so much air out of the room that, literally, a bag of air from the game sold for $15,000 on eBay. For me, his career ended in that Jacuzzi in Colorado. He said he liked being the villain on the court. Mission accomplished. The next time we hear from Kobe will be his (rightful) induction to the NBA’s Hall of Fame. Time softens the heart and bad memories fade, but there will be more than a few fans who at that time also will reflect on one additional, perhaps larger and more important fact: That sort of drama has passed. You don’t have to live like that anymore.

Turn Mini Notebook Into Mom’s Day Gift

Think of all the times you need a little notebook: to jot down an inspiring quote, the name of a must-see movie, an appointment and all things in between. But wait; it’s 2016. Isn’t that what memo apps on smartphones are for? Where reminders and inspirational “aha” moments go up to the Cloud and back to save us from our “I forgot’s”? Sure, I use that techy function, but I still like my little notebook, and I carry it just about everywhere I go. It’s a place where I write to me. Mini notebooks with added flourish can be an economical, easy-to-craft gift for kids to give to Mom, Grandmother or a special aunt on Mother’s Day. Using everyday items, decorate the cover of a standard tablet or mini composition notebook, and make it special. Here’s what you need: --1 small, inexpensive notebook or spiral-bound tablet approximately 4.5 inches by 3.25 inches --Leftover attractive wallpaper, gift-wrap or scrapbooking papers. I used the lovely patterned paper from the portfolio “Pretty Paper Parties,” by Vana Chupp (Chronicle Books) --Old or mismatched costume jewelry pieces, such as loop earrings, beads, rhinestones, etc. --Narrow, pretty ribbon and other decorative craft supplies --Small alphabet letter stamps and stamp pad (optional) --Scissors --Craft glue Here’s the fun: 1. Cut the paper to fit the front and back covers of the tablet and glue it in place. Trim the outside corners, if necessary. 2. On a sheet of plain paper, use the stamps to stamp out “MOM,” or write it by hand, or find a favorite font and print it on a computer. 3. Decorate the cover with crafty odds and ends. Cut out “MOM” from the sheet of paper and glue it on the cover. A repurposed lightweight hoop earring glued around the name makes a clever “frame.” 4. Tie a contrasting ribbon around the left side of the cover next to the binding or spiral. Add trinkets, charms or beads as you tie it together. Extra idea: As summer vacation approaches, decorate more mini notebooks for gifts to teachers, and use them as mini-journals and logs for nature finds and discoveries. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Read the Label! Acetaminophen, a commonly used overthe-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been shown in research trials to reduce the ability to spot errors. That can be serious, depending on what the user is doing while taking the drug. In double-blind clinical trials, those taking acetaminophen didn’t notice any difference in their ability to see errors, but the test results told a different story: There really were slower reactions and mistakes. (The participants’ task was to hit one of two buttons when certain letters appeared on a screen.) Acetaminophen is an active ingredient in hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines. If you take a pain reliever, be sure to read the package label to see if it contains acetaminophen, especially if you have liver problems. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about acetaminophen causing serious skin diseases, including rash and blisters. In 2015, the FDA amended the required warning on packages to expand on the possibility of liver damage. One consumer product that contains acetaminophen goes much farther in its label warning and says not to take it with other drugs, limit use of caffeine, avoid alcohol, and more. This should be a warning to all of us. Just because something is available over the counter doesn’t mean it’s safe in all situations. And even if we’ve taken a drug for a long time without harm, we need to start reading labels every time because the information in them might have changed. To keep up with new information from the FDA, have updates sent to you by email. Go online to fda.gov and put Get Email Updates in the search box. Choose your preferred topics and fill in your email address. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

VETERANS POST The Department of Veterans Affairs announced recently that the Dayton VA Medical Center will be the new site for the National Department of Veterans Affairs Archives. The plan is to renovate two existing buildings, built in 1871 and 1881. Ideally they will completely gut the old buildings and start fresh, with fire safety a big consideration. Anyone who has requested military records from the National Archives’ National Personnel Record Center in St. Louis and been told that the records burned up in the 1973 fire will appreciate that sentiment. The fire damaged or destroyed as many as 18 million Army and Air Force records. In the aftermath, it ordered that records from around the country not be destroyed anymore, since they could be used to piece together the history of veterans who apply for benefits or for future generations doing genealogy. Now the VA is trying to get all records from all sources digitized. Different branches have different methods of producing records, and not all are digitized. Some historic records and artifacts are stored at National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Others are scattered at 150 facilities around the country. The plan to centralize all of it is theoretically a good one. However, until the VA has caught up on all current records requests, any plans to centralize historical documents and objects should be put on hold until all records are digitized. Meanwhile, make a copy (paper and digital) of every single piece of paper you have pertaining to your military service. Make a list of dates, locations and personnel who served with you. Put it in a bank box. You never know when it will be needed. To read the full reports and keep track of new ones as they come in, check www.va.gov/oig.
