TIDBITS® SALUTES THE
RED, WHITE & BLUE by Kathy Wolfe
Hurray for the red, white, and blue! This is the perfect week for Tidbits to examine these three colors and their meanings and usage. ● The red of the American flag is symbolic of valor and bravery, while white signifies purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice. v Canada’s current maple leaf flag of red and white has only been the country’s official flag since 1965 when it was proclaimed so by Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to that, Canada had used the Canadian Red Ensign since 1870. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, declared by King George V in 1921. ● Red is the color of blood and fire and often symbolizes love, passion, and romance, as well as strength, courage, and leadership. It’s associated with anger, danger, and malice as well. ● There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes, each offering a different flavor to the beverage. The region of Bordeaux, France, is the original home of many familiar red grapes, including the cabernet sauvignon, which contributes a flavor of black currant, and the merlot, which offers a hint of chocolate or fruitcake. Bordeaux is the world’s major wine capital, where Bordeaux wine has been produced since the 8th century. turn the page for more

RED, WHITE & BLUE (continued) ● Surveys indicate that the color most often associated with innocence, purity, perfection, and honesty is white. Although royal brides have worn white for centuries, it didn’t become the color of wedding gowns for the commoner until the 19th century. Prior to that, brides just wore their Sunday best. In China, it is symbolic of death and mourning, and people wear white to funerals. ● Brides in China usually wear red, because it’s the color of happiness and fortune. The Chinese bride walks down a red carpet to meet her groom, who lifts her red veil. When the couple has children, friends and family give them red eggs. During Chinese New Year, homes are decorated with red, red clothing is worn, and unmarried children are given red envelopes filled with “luck money.” Those who follow feng shui, the art of balancing the energies of a space to promote health and good fortune, say that painting your home’s front door red invites prosperity. ● The Chicago White Sox began as the White Stockings in 1900. Their new home, Comiskey Park, opened in 1910 on the former site of a city dump and remained the team’s ballpark for the next 80 years. The first-ever AllStar game was played there in 1933. At the time of its demolition in 1991, Comiskey was Major League Baseball’s oldest park still in use. Famous White Sox players include Goose Gossage, Tom Seaver, and Steve Carlton. ● Combine all the possible tones of all the different frequencies that a human can hear and you have what is called white noise. It takes its name from the way that white light works. White light is made up of all the color frequencies of light combined. It’s what the human eye sees when it looks at light that contains all of the wavelengths of color’s visible spectrum.

mm@lovemytidbits.com Dog Not Treated for Lyme Disease DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog "Barley" tested positive for Lyme disease at his annual checkup. However, the veterinarian said he doesn't need treatment because the infection is not active. What does that mean? Should he get treatment anyway? -Confused in Deerfield, Mass. DEAR CONFUSED: There's a bit of controversy right now about how to treat dogs that test positive for Lyme disease. This disease, transmitted by ticks, is very widespread in the northeastern United States. In fact, the MSPCA reports that 50 percent to 75 percent of dogs tested in New England may be positive for Lyme disease. Despite this high number, only about 10 percent of dogs that test positive develop "clinical illness" -- with symptoms like lethargy, fever, lameness and enlarged lymph nodes, according to Dr. Erika de Papp. So, there is
much discussion about whether all positive dogs should be treated for the illness, or just those in which the disease is "active." Because Barley tested positive for the disease, find out if the vet conducted a second test to find out if it's active or was recently contracted. Whether he did so or not, ask the vet why your pet does not need treatment, or if he will in the future. As Barley's owner, you can also get a second opinion from another vet, if you're uncertain or unhappy with the first answer. And, for more details on this controversy, visit the MSPCA site. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don't? ● On July 7, 1852, according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, Dr. John H. Watson is born. Coincidentally, the author died on this day in England at the age of 71. His first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet," was published in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. ● On July 3, 1863, on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's last attempt at breaking the Union line ends in disastrous failure, bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end. Exhausted, both armies held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew. ● On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at a Paris swimming pool. A Parisian showgirl modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed "bikini," inspired by a U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week. ● On July 4, 1954, Marilyn Sheppard is beaten to death inside her home in Cleveland. Her husband, Dr. Sam Sheppard, claimed to see a man with bushy hair fleeing the scene, but the authorities charged Sheppard with killing his pregnant wife. Sheppard's case provided the loose inspiration for the hit television show "The Fugitive." ● On July 2, 1964, in a nationally televised ceremony, President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the historic Civil Rights Act. The Civil Rights Act met tough opposition in the House and a lengthy, heated debate in the Senate before being approved. ● On July 6, 1976, in Annapolis, Md., the United States Naval Academy admits women for the first time in its history with the induction of 81 female midshipmen. In May 1980, Elizabeth Anne Rowe became the first woman member of the class to graduate. On July 1, 1984, the Motion Picture Association of America, which oversees the voluntary rating system for movies, introduces a new rating, PG-13. The action film "Red Dawn," starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, became the first PG-13 movie to be released in theaters.
Welcome to a Special Edition of Goose Tips!
This week we will be celebrating our independence. The 4th of July is not just a chance to set off fireworks and cookout, the real purpose of the celebration goes to the heart of the establishment of our country. On the 4th of July, 1776, the United States of America was born. It was on this date that Wethe-People officially claimed our independence from Britain and a Democratic Republic was born. Those brave men and women who have chosen to protect, fight and even die for our republic know the significance and meaning attached to it. It is not the “4th of July”, it is INDEPENDENCE DAY! An independence that was and is drenched in the blood of our citizens who were and are willing to die for freedom from tyranny and to maintain liberty. There are no better words to describe this than the preamble to our Constitution of the United States: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” This week let’s all remember and be thankful for the brave men and women who have given their lives to give us freedom.

RED, WHITE & BLUE (continued) ● If you’ve ever been asked to bring a white elephant to a party, you know to pack along something that you don’t want, perhaps an inexpensive, useless, or humorous item. This term has its origins in Southeast Asia in ancient times. Tradition states that the mother of Buddha dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower on the eve of her son’s birth. The white elephant was considered sacred, and a monarch who possessed one reigned with justice and power. However, because the animal was sacred, it could not be put to any practical use, although it cost a considerable sum to maintain. It became burdensome to keep, but the owner could not dispose of it. ● Looking at the color blue can promote rest and cause the body to produce calming chemicals that release feelings of tranquility. Experts in feng shui tell us that blue is the perfect choice for the bathroom because of its tranquil and healing properties. Some cultures believe that blue keeps bad spirits away. In Iran it’s the color of mourning. To those of the Jewish faith, blue is the color of holiness. In China, it represents immortality. ● There are more than 700 species of the flowering plant indigofera. Although we think of indigo as a dye used to color our denim jeans blue, other varieties are effective as antiinflammatories to relieve the pain of bug stings, snake bites, swelling, and ulcers. Colonial planters in the mid-18th century began exporting the plants, but indigo had been a major source of capital for India since around 300 B.C. ● The word “blue” has found its way into our language in several different arenas. Stocks that are solid and stable are called blue-chip stocks and a first-place winner is awarded the blue ribbon. Laws designed to restrict immoral behavior are referred to as blue laws and a bluenose is an overly puritanical person. A member of the working class is called a blue collar worker, while the classic politician is often called a blue suit.

The young couple had two sons during the next three years. When a yellow fever epidemic raged across Philadelphia in 1793, Dolley lost her 29-year-old husband, three-month-old son and both in-laws, and was a widow at age 25 with another young son to support.

DOLLEY MADISON (continued) ● The following year, Dolley met and married a 43-year-old Continental Congress delegate from Virginia, James Madison. After eight years in Congress, James Madison retired from politics and the couple moved to his Virginia plantation when Dolley was 30. Madison’s withdrawal from politics was short-lived, as just four years later, his long-time friend Thomas Jefferson, newly elected as President, asked Madison to serve as Secretary of State. During the widowed Jefferson’s term of office, Dolley frequently acted as hostess for official functions at the White House. By the time her husband James was elected as President eight years later, she was well-known as a charming and elegant hostess. ● Dolley was praised for her hospitality as the President’s wife, and she soon became known as the “First Lady,” the first time this term had been used for the chief executive’s wife. Her husband’s popularity grew as a result of her many social graces. She also redecorated the White House’s public room in a grand style, suitable for entertaining diplomats. ● Dolley was the first President’s wife to set the precedent for a First Lady to become involved in social issues and special projects. She led the fund-raising efforts for the “The Corps of Discovery,” better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the exploration of the newly-acquired Louisiana Purchase. In addition, orphaned girls of Washington, D.C. found a home in a facility that Dolley helped establish. ● The tradition of America’s presidential inaugural balls began when James Madison was elected to his second term. She hosted the celebration at Washington’s Long’s Hotel, with 400 tickets sold for $4 each. ● During the War of 1812, the White House was set afire by British troops. Dolley further won the hearts of Americans by rescuing from destruction the historic Gilbert Stuart full-length portrait of George Washington as well as the original drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Over the years, Dolley’s son Payne Todd, who had never found a career, had accumulated massive debts through gambling and alcoholism, which her husband had handled while keeping them a secret. Todd was finally sent to debtors’ prison, and Dolley had to be informed. The plantation was mortgaged to pay his debts. When James died in 1836, Dolley was faced with financial poverty from the debt. She organized her husband’s seven volumes of presidential papers, which she sold to Congress for $55,000. The plantation was the next thing to be sold to cover Todd’s debts, and Dolley moved to a small house in Washington. She frequently received hand-outs from neighbors and even from her former slaves. In 1848, she sold the remainder of Madison’s papers for $25,000. She passed away the following year at 81.

That’s where we’ll find all sorts of interesting items beginning the letters AB-.“ ● When a monarch such as a king or queen relinquishes the power of the office, it’s known as abdication. One of the most famous abdications is that of the United Kingdom’s King Edward VIII. Edward was King for just 326 days in 1936 and became the first Brit to surrender his position voluntarily. Shortly after becoming King, he proposed marriage to an American socialite who was in the process of divorcing her second husband. Being advised that the British people would never accept an American with two ex-husbands as queen, he gave up the throne and married Wallis Simpson seven months later. He was succeeded by his brother, George VI, who was succeeded by his own daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

PERFECT ABS (continued) ● There are four major blood groups in the ABO blood group. Blood type is determined by the presence or absence of antigens. Group A has the A antigen on red blood cells, while Group B has the B antigen on red cells. Group AB has both antigens, and Group O has neither. Those in Group O can donate red blood cells to anyone and are the universal blood donors. Group A can donate to those in A and AB, while those with Type B can donate to B’s and AB’s. Those with Type AB blood can only donate to other AB’s, but they can receive blood from all others. Type O positive is the most common blood type. ● Are you an apprentice or greenhorn, learning the rudiments of something new? Then you are an abecedarian! The term not only refers to rookies, newbies, and beginners, it can also signify someone who is just learning the alphabet. ● The familiar incantation Abracadabra has its origins in the Hebrew language and translates, “I create what I speak.” Its first mention was in a third-century book, which touted the word’s healing power to make lethal diseases go away. ● Have you found something to be enigmatic, esoteric, or recondite? These are all unusual words that are synonymous with the word “abstruse,” which simply means “difficult to understand.” In other words, “It’s Greek to me!” ● An abyss is defined as “an immeasurably deep chasm or depth.” Russia’s Lake Baikal, located near the border of Siberia and Mongolia, is the world’s largest lake and deepest freshwater abyss on the planet. It’s not quite immeasurable, however, since its depth has been calculated at 5,402 feet (1,637 meters). Lake Baikal contains 20% of the entire world’s fresh water, and all of the Great Lakes could be poured into its depths with room to spare. ● If your hobby is abseiling, what are you doing? You enjoy rappelling on cliffs and rock faces! ● Bananas are for more than just eating. A strong fiber obtained from the plant’s leaf stalk called abaca has exceptional strength and flexibility, as well as resistance to the damages of salt water. Consequently, it’s a favorite component of ships’ ropes, fishing lines and nets, and well-drilling cables.

740-446-4400 Wounds that are large, that bleed, that are quite deep or are in a place, like the face, where they might be deforming should be taken care of by a professional.
Treating Animal Bites
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you tell me the best way to treat pet bites? I have three young children, and we live in a neighborhood where every family except us has at least one pet. Most are dogs. I don't want to overreact to a tiny scratch, but I need to know what to do with a more serious bite. -- A.M. ANSWER: I'm limiting my remarks to cat and dog bites. Wild-animal bites require more involved treatment and are best taken care of in a hospital setting. A domesticated animal that has bitten a child or adult should be observed for 10 days to see if it exhibits signs of rabies. The threat of rabies is small, but maximal precautions have to be taken because rabies is such a deadly illness. Unprovoked bites from an animal raise the suspicion of rabies. Less-serious bites, the ones that can be treated at home, are copiously irrigated with sterile saltwater. Not many homes have sterile saltwater, so the bite should be washed with soap and water and then irrigated with tap water. After the irrigation, apply a disinfectant like Betadine (povidone iodine). Inspect the wound daily for any signs of infection -- skin redness or pus. If you see those signs, take the child to a doctor. If the child's immunizations are up to date, all is well. If they are not, he or she needs a tetanus booster. If the child has had no tetanus immunizations, the series should begin right away.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I'm in my 60s and never had a major illness. I take no medicines. In the past three months, I have been wakened from sleep with a dull pain in the center of my chest. My husband told me to take Mylanta. I did, and got instant relief. What do you think of this pain? -- V.P. ANSWER: Pain that wakens a person from sleep must be taken seriously and ought to be reported to the family doctor. However, the response you got from taking Mylanta (an antacid) makes me think of GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as heartburn. Stomach acid and digestive juices spurt into the esophagus, a structure not equipped to deal with them like the stomach can. If this nighttime pain of yours keeps coming back, put 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed to keep stomach juices in the stomach when you lie down. My first statement about nighttime pain has to be observed. You need to see the family doctor to be certain this is heartburn and not one of the many other serious possibilities. The booklet on coronary artery disease, another cause of chest pain, details its signs and symptoms. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Making a Smooth Move Do you have a move in your future? There is more to a successful move than just calling the first moving-company number you find in the telephone book. As with any transaction that involves an exchange of money for services, there is a possibility of being scammed unless you've very careful. The earlier you start the process of finding a mover, the more likely you will find one you can trust to do the job you need. Make your first step the Department of Transportation site, www.protectyourmove.gov. Carefully review all the various sections and become familiar with the possible pitfalls and steps you should take. Be sure to read the Moving Fraud Prevention Checklist, Red Flags of Moving Fraud and Moving Broker Checklist. Learn about binding versus non-binding estimates, what to do if the mover refuses to deliver your goods unless you pay more money (a violation of Federal regulation), and your rights and responsibility. When it comes to hiring a mover, start with recommendations from friends. No matter how highly recommended a mover is, however, you'll want to get estimates from more than just one. The more movers you interview, the better your chances of hiring an honest one that won't damage your property. Count on conducting six to 10 interviews, on the phone and in person, before you decide. Get written estimates that include the estimated weight of your goods and all charges for moving. Ask about possible extra charges for packing mirrors, mattresses and breakables. Refuse to sign any blank documents or documents that are not completely filled out. Granted, all of the information on the documents cannot be completed, but the only blanks should involve the actual weight of the goods, which will be determined at shipping. Refuse, too, to sign any "revised written estimate" after the goods are loaded on the truck and the mover wants to increase the cost. With the exception of the exact shipping weight (which should end up being very close to the written estimated weight), nothing should change after the goods are loaded. Warning flags that should kill any deal in selecting a mover: No local address or license, no company trucks with the name on the side, lack of information on insurance on the website and giving an estimate of costs over the phone. Consult the Better Business Bureau in your area before you make a final decision on a mover. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

The classic Jamaican seasoning called jerk is a zesty blend of herbs and spices that packs a punch of flavor. 5 large green onions 1 jalapeno chile, seeded and cut up 1 piece (1 inch) fresh ginger, peeled and cut up 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dried thyme 3/4 teaspoon ground allspice 3 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 pounds skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves, cut into 12 equal pieces 1 medium red pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces 1. Coarsely chop 2 green onions; cut remaining 3 green
onions into 2-inch-long pieces and reserve. In blender at high speed or in mini food processor, with sharp side of blade facing up, blend chopped green onions with jalapeno, ginger, vinegar, Worcestershire, thyme, allspice, 2 teaspoons oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt until blended, scraping down side of blender once. Transfer herb mixture to medium bowl; add chicken pieces and toss to coat evenly. 2. In small bowl, toss red pepper and green-onion pieces with remaining 1 teaspoon oil and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. 3. On 4 long skewers, alternately thread chicken, red pepper and green onions. 4. Place kabobs on grill over medium heat; brush with any remaining marinade. Grill kabobs 10 to 12 minutes or until juices run clear when chicken is pierced with tip of knife. There aren't many Styrofoam-style containers that make it into our house these days, now that we consume fewer pre-packaged food items. But once in awhile, a take-home box from a restaurant or a fresh fruit/vegetable tray sneaks in. If you have some in your recycle bin, put them to use and make super-easy block prints. Your kids can have fun all summer long setting up their own "print shop" indoors or out to make bookmarks, note cards, party invitations, art to frame and art to wear. This is a great way to spend creative time together with your kids, too, discovering the joy of making something beautiful from scratch. Here's what you'll need: --Recycled clean and unpatterned foam trays and plates from packaged fruits, vegetable and baked goods --Scissors --Ballpoint pen, pencil, chopstick or skewer --Tempera or acrylic paint, or water based ink for block printing --Paintbrush, foam paint roller or hand-inking roller (brayer) --Construction or watercolor paper Here's the fun: 1. Set supplies on a newspaper-covered table. Trim off all curved edges of the trays with scissors to create a perfectly flat foam printing block. 2. Draw a picture or design by pressing firmly on the foam block with a pen or other suggested objects. If using a skewer, press with the blunt end. You may wish to draw a light design with a pencil first. Remember, the printed design will appear in reverse. For alphabet letters, you might wish to practice beforehand on a sheet of scratch paper, then look at them in a mirror to see how they would look when printed. 3. Apply the paint or ink evenly onto the printing block with a brush or roller. Avoid filling in the design. Carefully place your paper over the printing block, press gently or rub the back of the paper with the rounded side of a large spoon. Quickly peel away the print to keep from smearing the design. Make as many prints as you wish. Add more WANT TO RUN OWN BUSINESS? paint to the printing blockYOUR as needed. If it becomes clogged, rinse with water, dry and reapply paint or Publish a Paper inink. Make the Connection If you're a veteran who is struggling to find ways to improve your life, perhaps because you're dealing with a service-related issue, I invite you to take a look at Make the Connection, a website run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Make the Connection is a one-stop site for a wide variety of concerns affecting veterans: homelessness, jobs and employment, family and friends, mental-health concerns, transitioning from the service, dealing with physical injury and more. Most impressive and useful is the Signs & Symptoms section. It's long, with dozens of symptoms, including flashbacks, feeling on edge, noise or light irritation, confusion, trouble sleeping and nightmares, and more. Each section is broken into three parts. The first part is, "What can I do about it right away?" The steps aren't silly, either; they're ones a counselor or medical adviser likely would talk about first, things you can do at the moment to feel better and regain control. The second step is to make the connection with medical or mental-health advisers. The third step is links to immediate information. You even can customize the site to give information tailored more closely to who you are. Select from male/female, the era in which you served, the branch of service and whether you were exposed to combat. If you don't have a computer, try to find one to use, possibly at your local library, and check in with Make the Connection at http://maketheconnection.net. You'll likely find sources of information and help. Don't miss the videos of veterans who talk about their own experiences. If you're with a veterans service organization, especially if you're in an advising capacity, look over the Make the Connection site and become familiar with what it has to offer the veterans you help. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

A Great Way to Advertise Your Business Everywhere You Go! Medicare Unveils New Summary Notice Form Medicare fraud is rampant, but because of seniors who asked questions about improper payments, more than $4.2 billion was saved last year. To continue to fight fraud and to help seniors understand the quarterly Medicare Summary Notice, a new form has been designed. To make sure the new summary you receive is actually from Medicare, start with the envelope. The return address will say Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Look for "Official Medicare Information" on the front and contact telephone numbers on the back. The changes to the form: Page 1 is a summary of your notice. It includes your name, deductible status and the status of all claims, including whether they've been approved. The total amount you may be billed and how many facilities (such as hospitals) submitted claims also are itemized. Page 2 offers tips on how to review the notice. There are instructions on how to check for possible fraud, how many Inpatient Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility benefit days you've used, and a phone number to call. Page 3 is your Claims for Part A information, and includes where you were hospitalized, whether the claim was approved, how much Medicare paid and how much you might billed. Check the hospital dates carefully to make sure you were actually there on those dates. The final page tells how to handle denied claims or file an appeal. To file an appeal, follow the step-by-step instructions. If you need help with it, there is a phone number to call, or Medicare suggests asking for help from the facility itself or a friend or family member. Don't miss the date it must receive the appeal. At the bottom is the address of where to send the appeal.
Q: I purchased three watercolors and an oil painting from an estate. The owner didn't know anything about them except that the artwork had been in her family since the 1950s. I have not been able to find the artists referenced in any of the books I have or on the Internet. What do you suggest so I can find out if my three pictures have any value? I contacted an appraiser who told me that he would charge a minimum of $75, but that sounds excessive. -- Peggy, Harrisburg, Pa. A: In recent weeks, I have received several dozen questions about artwork, so if you are one of those people, this answer also is for you. To determine the value of artwork, whether it be a painting or a piece of sculpture, is difficult and time-consuming. It requires an expert. A case in point involves an art appraiser I know who once spent the better part of two weeks tracking down information about an obscure

European artist for a client. The end result indicated the painting was not valuable and was worth close to the purchase price of $150. The fee for the research was $350, again quite fair. With this example in mind, the offer of having your three paintings appraised for a minimum of $75 doesn't sound that excessive. In fact, it seems to me to be quite reasonable. When hiring an expert, don't hesitate to ask for his or her credentials and references. Be aware, also, that art prices have slumped in recent years due to the economy. If you have an early Picasso you are lucky, but lesser know, and, yes, lesser talented artists are not so much in demand. One final thought: Don't ask an appraiser for a "ballpark figure" or "guesstimate." Free lunches went the way with the 5-cent cigar. Q: I have a 9-inch vase in the Cornet pattern manufactured by Hull Pottery Company. It is mostly yellow in color. I have been offered $35 for it. -- Stacey, Billings, Wyo. A: Take the money. According to one of the better guides, "Warman's Hull Pottery: Identification and Price Guide" by David Doyle, your vase is valued at $15.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com Dented Wood Floor Can be Repaired
Q: My apartment has this cool original wood floor made up of wide pine planks. They're painted over, so scratches haven't been a problem. But there are a few spots where heavy furniture or dropped items dinged and dented the wood. Is there a quick way to repair these spots? -- Carla in Taunton, Mass. A: There's an interesting fix you can try, using a clothes iron and a damp towel to try and bring up the dent. Because the dent is a compression of the wood, using dampness and heat may help the wood to expand and minimize the dent. This technique is not one that I would recommend for floors with a heavy coat of wax (as some older floors do), because the heat may discolor the finish, but since your wood floor has just a coat or two of paint, you shouldn't have much of a problem. However, the paint may bubble or crack due to the initial damage and the expansion of the wood, so have some matching paint handy in order to touch up the area afterward. (As always, test a less-conspicuous area of the floor before making the repair.) First, dab the dent with a wet rag to soak the wood a bit. Wait a couple of minutes. While you're waiting, fill the reservoir of your clothes iron and turn it on high, with full steam setting. Once the iron is hot, place a damp towel over the dent. Place the iron atop the towel, holding it directly over the dented area and trying to avoid the surrounding floor. Move the iron in a circular pattern while applying full steam, for about three minutes. Lift the towel to check your results. If the dent appears to be less deep, reapply the iron for a minute or so, checking each time until the dent is almost level with the rest of the floor. Once the area has cooled, repair the cracked or bubbling paint over the dent. Sand away the damaged paint, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and touch up the spot with matching paint. HOME TIP: Placing runners or area rugs in hightraffic areas of your home can reduce minor damage to hardwood flooring. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com.
